Earn a living teaching online courses — a successful Udemy teacher offers advice

Com platform, which is the I think, the biggest online platform for courses or, I should say the biggest place for online courses and Udemy has anything over nine million students and Ken Wells is has like uh I’ll. Let me introduce himself, but he used he’s making a living teaching courses on udemy and so we’re here to ask him.

Some questions me and my friend Adam, is here to ask him some questions about how he’s making it work. So Ken thanks for being here, yeah. Well, thank you so much for for having me know my journey on udemy started in a in June of last year, and really only so, it’s been less than a year yep. I didn’t realize that okay, so it’s it’s, there was a substantial amount of work in the beginning, yeah I scaled it much faster than what I’ve seen you know, other other instructors having contact with yeah so yeah.

I mean I’m happy to answer any questions that you guys have so yeah. I guess the first one is just to give us a sense of your track record on you to me how many students you have. I made courses. You have that kind of thing sure. So right now I have ten ten courses that are live. I have two that are about to go live next month and I also have like right now. I have about almost 26,000 students in 157 countries, Wow yeah yeah yeah, and it was okay.

I’m just going to share your your course page. I guess I have 11 courses, 11 courses, yeah yeah, yeah, he’s kind of like loose trash, don’t create a bunch. So that’s cool best-selling udemy. So this is your your title. I guess on udemy yeah, okay and then this is kind of your your normal or your course profile page. You got at bolding the sort of the some of the keywords that that you want people to know.

Your course is about okay, cool and then Co shows here: 25,000 students, 11 courses, 550, almost 55 reviews and your courses are priced so so right now udemy’s course. Pricing is between, is it $ 10 at the minimum or the minute, it’s their pricing structures between twenty to fifty dollars, twenty to fifty? Okay. So what I am um now: okay, yeah twenty is the minimum yeah. So, basically, what I do there is depending on where I’m ranking and the size of the course I will.

You know, price it. I will look at my competitors and see like if my two closest competitors are at $ 20, but I’m out ranking them. Mine $ 5 higher, or something like that. Oh I see okay, so you you that’s one of the market. Research techniques you use is to look at your your and how do you? How do you even find your competitors? Well, it really. Everything starts with keyword, research. Okay, so that’s that’s who my competitors are is who is competing, for you know, keywords with me.

Okay, so let’s say – and maybe we could even I don’t know Adam if we want to use your topic as an example or if you want us to use a different topic. What if what? If we did it like a like a little exercise Adam, are you interested in trying some keyword, research on your topic or no? Oh? Maybe we could do the course that I’m kind of thinking about later this year, any researcher sure, and what is the topic? It’s the art software that I use the for creating comics, it’s called manga studio or clip studio paint, but basically like, of course, teaching how to make comics.

Okay awesome. So I’m just thinking about whether that example would be useful for everyone or for myself, and maybe a few others who might be reading this. Let’s use a general topic, or maybe Ken do you have a topic that you’re going to be working on? I really don’t have any in mind because I’ve already created some courses that you know so, let’s say: let’s, let’s let me give you an example. Then let’s say that I’m a relationship, coach, okay and I’m wanting to create a course on how to have better.

You know better relationship with your partner right, so what I would do is I would go to. I would go to an incognito window interesting and why? Why incognito? Oh well for Chrome, yeah, oh so you’re going to okay, let’s just say: I’m not going to use incognito, I’m just going to use this window sure! Just I I mean I don’t know how that is on other browsers, but it’s just simply because you know. Obviously, your search results are skewed.

Based on your your personal browsing history, yeah. Okay, let me actually let me actually do shit, but let me actually do share an incognito window, then that might be easier to okay. So I’m just going to share this screen, which is an incognito window, cool yep, and what I would do is I would you know I usually just go to youtube.Com and I would have like another doc open like you know, Google Doc or whatever right first thing.

I would do is like right here in this search bar. I would just start by typing like a single letter like let’s say it’s relationships right, so I would type in an R and then an E okay, and then I’m looking in this drop-down menu – and I don’t see anything yet so now put in an L, hmm And we have relationships so, even though that’s not like you know, it’s still pretty general, I’m going to I’m going to take those two keyword, those two keywords: yeah hips in relationship now, the order that they appear in is based on how much theirs mmm all those Ones that say you know you see the little icon with the the page and it says course on the far right.

I don’t don’t. I don’t pay attention to any of that stuff, just those key words: a bomb okay, just these yeah, so I would take probably I would put those three relationships – relationship in relationship building and I would put them in that order on a Google Doc. Okay, yeah I’ll put in another a mm-hmm, okay and still nothing new. So then a t relationship, no relationship, coaching just popped up.

I would throw that at the bottom of my list. Okay, okay, now you know Yankees, I write just keep going still nothing to you. You just want to keep going until we see something new here. Yeah, let’s see, relationship marketing, you know ships, coaching versus relationship, coaching, I guess, okay, when it comes to these kinds of differences, where there’s like an S versus no s. What is your take on it? Well, I just this is just the preliminary like this is where I’m just getting ideas later on I’ll.

Do some other things to kind of condense it down and focus on which keywords I’m going to target, got it just giving me ideas. So I just kind of like type out relationships. One letter at a time like that yeah doesn’t let me actually you know what I’m going to do, I’m actually going to start a Google spreadsheet and I’m going to just as a as an actual exercise share. This share my screen that you can see everything.

Okay, so we had relationship. We had ships, relationship, relationship, building, building, see what else we had relationship coaching relationship coaching. Well, it looks like there’s ship and ships coach teaching right. Okay, I think it was on this. One came first coaching poaching, yeah and then and then what so do you actually like order them? Sorry I I do I do, but you know at this point we’re just kind of getting ideas.

So then, then, if we go back to that that search, so I would just go all the way through and you know see if anything else, pops up doesn’t look like there is now. If you want to get more. Oh here, here’s interesting some interesting yeah there. You go happy relationships, happy relationships, bad relationships, relationships, diagram, that’s weird, yeah, okay and then, interestingly, there’s two types of personalities that are especially interested in relationships enfjs, which I’m on the borderline.

Actually all right, I’m assuming usually I’m assuming that I have a more specific idea. Right and so if it doesn’t relate to personalities and relationships and obviously I’m not going to put those down, I’m just putting down you know happy relationships, bad relationships and then, like let’s say you know, let’s be more specific. You mentioned that the idea was how to have a better relationship yeah, let’s, let’s actually be get even even more specific.

Let’s write how to have a better relationship when you have kids – okay, maybe marriage, that’s pretty specific! So you know I might start with how to you know, and so that’s very interesting, um yeah. So I just H: wait slow down, though cuz okay, you might get ideas as you go along, but you just kind of do each letter, just like we did before and just see. What’s popping up it’s interesting. I think I think, given that there’s probably too many H’s there they’re not showing it or maybe you have to refresh yeah you just you just got ta keep going like H.

Oh oh, go till you kind of start seeing stuff pop up right. Just start spelling out like and how to have a good relationship see nothing so far, so we put the W in okay. This is weird. Look look at these, so what is what is this? Do you know what those numbers are? No is that a course number man honestly. I have no idea what that is. Okay, it’s weird! Maybe it’s a udemy bug, maybe they’re, showing us how many people are searching.

It yeah: okay, how to have okay, how to hack a computer? Oh yeah, okay, all right! Yeah you’re having kids how to have school, how they have school, that’s weird: how did it have less fear more power and pain you can? Maybe you should teach a class on that you could teach a class on that. I have okay, so this is weird. So how to have better – let’s just say better people – are really interested in that first one, yes yeah! I don’t think this is just on you to me how I became much more productive to how you can that’s interesting right, and you can do that.

Yeah write that down how to have it, how top start can have a void business? Okay, I think a good course title would be how to have fun sex because that’s clearly near the top. This also is helping you, you know, maybe refine your idea like, for example, if you look midway down through the list, it says how to be a better lover. So maybe maybe you started off with this idea that you’re going to help people have a better relationships, and you decide based on this, you say: well, maybe I can focus this on just how to help someone become a bet.

You know be a better lover as and then house will also have how to be better loved, interesting right right. So I kind of use these to help me define my idea and I’m just kind of putting everything down yeah so how’d it be a better loved. Oh, that’s probably just a Miss just a typo, that’s weird, okay! So all right. Let’s say that we’ve done! We’ve done this keyword, research and we kind of try different questions or different yeah.

So you go through and you think of you know what do people type in like they it’s how to dot dot in relation to whatever your thing is, how to you know a parenting. Yeah got it techniques, you know parenting techniques or relationship skills or relationship techniques, and you just find the most relevant keywords that are showing up in the list yeah and you make a list of those once you kind of define which ones you know most fit.

What you’re trying to do yeah and I head over to you – know: Google Keyword planner. Ah, okay, and this is really the litmus test uh-huh. So then I start plugging those words into the keyword planner right now. Let me ask you this: do you do you ever click on any of these and look at what courses are available? Sure? Ok, so if I click on parenting, for example, parenting, okay, so let me just kind of let me login a Google Keyword planner here while we’re doing this.

Okay. So but but what I’m hearing you say, is you don’t do this next? That’s not that’s! Not your process is to look at the courses. Are there, you don’t do that. You don’t do that. That’s you. You actually go to a keyword planner. Next, I’m doing I do the keywords. First. Okay, so I mind: once I have my keywords targeted then I go. Look at the competition on udemy for those specific okay. So so I’m, obviously we don’t have a lot of time.

So I’m just going to speed up the process and, let’s just I’m just going to pick a random one. That seems good alright. So in the keyword planner, obviously in this article I’m not going to teach people how to use keyword planner, but I’m just going to say, relationship, happy, happy relationships, you know yeah, I wouldn’t I mean, even though it’s on you to me, you know if you look At the search results here I mean it’s 170 yeah.

But what is your litmus test for? What would you go for in terms of numbers? Look at the ones that are the most targeted, but you know it’s got ta. It’s got ta have at least you know a few thousand, a few thousand yeah yeah, I’m going to just say: I’m just going to go down and quickly pick one from the list here and do you have an upper limit like you? Don’t you don’t try to go for competing on it? I try to find the ones that are towards the top of the search result, but that are like, if you have a scale between very targeted and low results and very general with high results.

Yeah, I try to find the ones that are like right around here that are more targeted, but still have a healthy amount of results. Right: okay, for example, marriage, counseling, marriage, counseling. Oh, if your, if your course was focused on that, that would be a good one right. There yeah marriage, counseling, okay, so um well, but then people taking a course on marriage counseling might be wanting to become a marriage counselor and I’m guessing like if they type in marriage counseling like they wanted the marriage counseling degree.

Maybe I don’t know. I think that that’s probably more people that are interested in getting counseling for their own marriage, I would think, and unless it was like marriage counseling certificate, or I mean I know like if they type it into Google – I I think that’s true, but if they type It into you to me, though, you know what I mean like they type into you to me: marriage counseling. I imagine well at the end, at the end of the day, I’m just using that to get a sense of if the keywords that are showing up on you to me also have decent amount of search results on Google right.

There’s. This guaranteed correlation that there’s going to be a ton of people on you to me, I mean really the the courses that you know everybody does seems to do very well on you to me, are like programming courses and business courses, yeah, that’s really their bread and Butter – but this is just to give me a sense of really even some yeah, so I’m going to say healthy relationships, that’s you know quite targeted and it’s thousand and you know two dollars, so that’s commercial viability.

So let’s say that that’s the keyword, healthy relationships and, of course we can look. You know I would just search that and search that and what you notice here is. So if you go to that top result, mmm click on it. They have 2300 students and 32 ratings. Okay, though that’s they have a little bit of traction. Okay doesn’t mean that you can’t beat them, but those 32 ratings. You know you’re not going to be number one overnight.

If you’re competing with this person. Now there’s some things. You can do with keywords to be more relevant like, for example, they started there. They started their title with build right, whereas I would probably start it with the keywords of healthy relationships and then put a colon right and then put some things after that. Now, what what is udemy probably doesn’t reveal this, but what is your feeling of what is most important in the search results on udemy? Well, it’s keyword, relevance which is again putting it at the beginning, but that alone won’t get it to that.

That alone is not going to help. You beat that top yeah because, like for example, codependent No More has no nothing. I mean, there’s, there’s no keyword. Okay, so one little side note so you to me it keeps testing a lot of different things. So yeah perfect, you know and look I even show up on the first page, even for an anger management course. Oh, but you do oh there, it is! Oh hey you there’s not even one that I’m trying I’m not even trying for that keyword yeah.

So why do you show up here? What do you think big? I honestly, maybe because the course has a lot of students and it’s got. You know it’s. It’s very well rated, there’s, probably a lot of minutes consumed for that course. It does have the word better relationships. If you look in the subtitle there there it is yeah mm-hmm, okay, there you that that’s part of the reason, okay, what udemy is looking at is.

Yes, you want to do things from an SEO perspective of you know putting your keyword at the beginning of the title. If you want to you know, if you look at my title and subtitle here, so anger management was the main keyword, so that shows up first yeah how to control anger was the second thing that I wanted. Oh, I see got it right and then better relationships was one of them and then reduced stress was another.

I see I see so if I type in reduce stress, maybe you’ll come up we’ll see you know there. You go so number two well yeah both of my courses. Oh number, one! That’s awesome! That’s really good! Okay! So what do you do next? Now that we let’s say we? Let’s say we pick the title and a subtitle? What’s your next step, so once we’ve identified how so my strategy is always to rank high and let you to me carry the the brunt of the marketing for these courses.

Yeah right, I don’t do a lot of outside marketing, so everything that I do is about getting these to rank as high as possible, got it mm-hmm. So what I would do next is what else we do yeah. What like? What else do you do to get them ranked high as possible? Well, another factor that udemy looks at is enrollments. Now, here’s here’s where a lot of people, especially when they’re starting out they’re so afraid to give their course away for free because they’re afraid that like if they give it away for free, then nobody’s going to buy it right and the reality is, is that’s not The case we have to always remember that the Internet is a very, very big place, though I give out a lot of free coupons.

I have a virtual assistant that has a schedule where she’s constantly giving out free coupons. Now I have her: do it you all with them yeah? What do you want for the free coupons, um Facebook groups? There’s certain sites, I’ve identified that I also give them out for free okay, so that works really well for you that you’re giving out the paper funds it does. But you have to you, can’t just go to the same places you kind of have to mix it up now.

One of the one thing that I do different than some instructors is that some instructors will basically like they’ll. Do a post with all their courses for free. I don’t think that’s a good strategy, because what I want is I want someone to come in for free on one right: they’re going to now start receiving promotional announcements from me for paid courses right. So I give out select courses to select areas to get people enrolled, which not only helps my rankings on udemy, because again udemy is also wanting you to build their email list, which is why they still honor.

That’s why they look so heavily on enrollments. Is you know, you’re building their student base, yeah yeah, mm-hmm, okay, so so the three! So you really, you emphasize on giving free coupons for specific courses in the relevant Facebook groups and other websites yep got it and what what else do you do to rank so high? What else what’s another well? Another thing is, is um and you know udemy’s changed a lot of things recently.

Okay, so where it stands right now, is you really need their prompting students three times to leave a review, prompt them right when they start so after they’ve? About 10 %, okay, rocked yes, so you need to really come out of the gates, really strong and fast, and that’s actually been a challenge with the most challenging course that I have with rate ratings is what you just saw in the last pages of the stress Management course: okay, it was identified that it.

You know, I just got off to a slow start there, so I need to reconfigure that so that they get kind of like a really strong start in the course. The servers ten percent of the course needs to be really good. Yeah, exactly yeah got it God. You know I’m going to I’m going to see Adam. Do you have any questions you want to ask the the only question that I thought of beforehand was essentially like what what is the benefit of selling through you to me, as opposed to you know through your own website, and is that exclusive, like you, if you Put something on you to me like: are you limited to just you know, music exclusive, excellent questions? To answer your first question, you know, the benefit of you to me is the fact that they market your course for you so, and they also walk you through step of the they basically give you a roadmap of how to create your course.

What to do next. So it’s very plug-and-play, but whereas, when you’re creating it on your own, the main thing is you’re responsible for your own marketing and there’s a lot of decisions you have to make to you know: how do you want it branded? How do you want your sales page set up? You browse on you to me, you just fill in the the column yeah fill in that she wants to do both. Is that like in their terms of agreement, and I think, yeah, your second question had to do with? If I put my course on udemy, does that mean I can’t sell it somewhere else and it’s your content so you’re not violating their terms? You can sell your course every you know anywhere else.

You want well Ken. I want to respect your time. So what what is the? If, if, if you were starting over on udemy today, what would you do differently or what would you keep doing? Besides? What we’ve talked about, of course right, I think, and in some of this you just I mean it just you just learn how to do it. I mean like one thing that I do differently today than when I started. Is it used to take me like a month to create a course hmm, whereas now I create smaller, more targeted courses that are shorter mmm, because what’s the ideal length and you’re in your mind before you? Actually, what do you call? I mean like, for example, also look for ways to really leverage.

My time like, I did a webinar yesterday, which I recorded mmm on a topic that I also did keyword research on right. So I already did all that before I recorded the webinar so that webinars about an hour and a half right and I’m going to turn that into a course yeah which I’m going to pay someone to do the article editing right. So it saves my time and then I’m going to put that on you to me mmm, so that it can start earning me a residual income as well yeah.

So then you have to so that’s great, so the entire courses an hour and a half right, okay and then the udemy has a limit of 20 minutes maximum per per lecture on udemy. So you just chalk up the hour and it happen to what 10 minutes 20 minutes. What’s your suggestion for ideal length of each lecture, apparently through you know, according to research, I guess like two to three minutes for length per lecture is good.

Okay. You know you can’t always adhere to that, but your average lecturer needs to be, I think, less than ten. You know the average length of lecture needs to be like ten minutes or less okay, oh yeah, so so two to three minutes is really kind of people’s attention span on you to me, and probably elsewhere too. I know it’s not on YouTube. Like my two minute, articles tend to do better than the other ones, but I I’m kind of I kind of don’t care and just kind of like whatever, but but yeah and one one more thing is: I mean you’ve got beautiful graphics.

Where do you get your graphics, oh great question, so you to me does that for you? Oh wait. Wait a second! I just say that you to me gives you the option, but you can also upload your own graphics, right, yeah. You can upload your own, but I I since the very beginning. I let you to me do that because they have a vested interest in your course doing. Well so they’re going to provide you with at least as good a graphic is, you know, you’re probably likely to find on your own, but even this article thumbnail graphic that that was from you to me yeah, it’s um.

They do that part automatically once they create your thumbnail, they throw that on the on the front end of your right – and this is your: this – is your current brand yeah. So so then, basically you you recorded this article. Well, you do this and then udemy threw up. You need me, put up a throw up a thumbnail, graphic, yep, okay and the thumbnail graphic. Oh, the thumbnail graphic is the course graphic.

It’s the course logo graphic you got it got it: okay, okay, God! Okay, awesome! Man, well Ken, is there anything else like you want to say before we address? I, I think you know you could make you to me a full-time business if you treat it that way, I would say this. You know also look at as with anything you do online look at multiple different income streams. Yeah you, you know, because you to me is a they are a marketplace.

They do. They can change their rules at any time. Yeah, you know, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, but it is a great. It is a great platform for someone starting off to really just quickly put a course together, get it online and start making money. Awesome man. Well, I I hope, those who are reading this. If we do share it, will follow you and buy your courses and I’m kind of see how you do it, how you promote your courses from the student perspective, I think that’ll be useful.

3 Ways Rappers Can Build Their Fanbase Fast | Music Marketing Strategies & Tips

I release a new article also, if you like any of the beats here in the background this article I’ll have the direct links listed in the description below alright, so the first way that you can start building your fanbase is by actually collaborating with other artists, either Around you or that you can meet through social media, so collaboration is great because it allows you to get in front of an audience that you wouldn’t have the opportunity to get in front of otherwise.

So as an example, if you have a thousand fans – and somebody else has a thousand fans – that’s potentially 2,000 people that can see your new song – you just did with that artist. So now, potentially, you can gain an extra thousand followers just because you were in front of somebody else’s audience and that’s across all other social medias as well. So, if they’re, promoting through Twitter or they’re, promoting through Instagram or they’re, promoting through SoundCloud or whatever it is you’ll, actually be able to grow on all those different platforms as a whole and that’s just from doing a collaboration with one artist.

If you find multiple other artists, so if you find say ten artists, you can collaborate with that’s not potentially ten other opportunities that you have to be seen in front of other audiences. Another great thing about collaboration is the fact that most rappers aren’t going to take down the song that you did with them. So if they blow up and they get say they get exposed to 10,000 more people or they grow a fanbase to like ten thousand.

A hundred thousand people have percentage of them are going to see your name as well, and the percentage of they’re going to go search you out as well, and if you grow your fanbase big enough, you’ll actually be able to charge for collapse and start making some Money from this as well, alright, so the second way you can start building a fanbase is actually by creating viral articles. So basically, the type of articles that I’m talking about are the ones that people want to share, because it’s either interesting or it relates to a certain audience on social media.

So a great example of this would be how futuristic was able to dress like a nerd and start rapping for people, and all they did was record that from across the street. And so basically, because that was such an unexpected thing and it was able to be shared across social media, but through either Twitter or through Instagram or through Facebook. It was able to go viral and he gained so much exposure from that.

Now he’s not going to gain his mate, so if he gets a million views, it’s not going to give you a million followers, but there’s going to be a percentage of people that are going to be like. I want to see what he’s going to do in the future and those are the people that are going to be able to become part of your fan base. So you can also use those to your advantage to direct people to your original music as well.

So, basically, by leaving a link to Spotify or by leaving a link to your original music somewhere else, you can direct people to your original content. You can gain fans from that as well. Just as a side note, I don’t want anybody thinking that okay, I can just go and do the same thing and get the same result. That’s not really true, and that’s not really the case. People are going to know that you’re trying to rip off and do the same thing, so you just need to be creative and figure out.

Something else that you can do on your own. So the third way that we’re going to talk about how you can build your fanbase is through targeted marketing on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. So yes, this does require that you have somewhat of a budget, and you also do need to know what you’re doing somewhat, but once you understand some of the things about how these ad platforms work and how to actually promote your music on these platforms.

You’ll actually be surprised about how effective these can actually be. So basically, if we take the previous way so using a viral article to basically gain exposure, if you take – and you promote that through YouTube or Facebook to people who have a similar interest in that style of music, you’ll actually be able to gain fans from that. So as an example of how you can actually go about doing, this is basically going through and on facebook on the ads manager.

Blogger 02 Why Blog?

I was working on a technology Bill of Rights for students and that’s back in 2011 before we had iPads. So look he they just had these netbooks and stuff. So it’s just some stuff. I was writing about that. But that’s what we really want for you is that you can go back and you can check on your learning. You can see how much you’ve grown and when you go off to university and stuff, sometimes there’ll be pieces in here.

You need to show to prove that you gained some skills. So it’s like oh yeah. If all his content, I like his blog a lot and I’m just going to discuss what he thought about passive income and I’ll, probably link the article that, in the description, this article is a little bit old actually.

But I still think it is very really very. Very relevant and passive income is definitely something that’s talked about in the finance slash like entrepreneurial space that I’m in right now. So I thought I would comment on it as well, and I also bring in a little bit of what can call passive income as well. So basically, what Gary thinks about this and you could check out his article as well before reading this, but basically what Gary thinks about this is that passive income is sort of like people.

Think it’s sorta like a get-rich-quick thing. He doesn’t really buy it too much. He source says that there’s only two really main and like actual forms of passive income and those would be investing in real estate now, obviously, unless you’re new to my blog, you know I talked about investing in a stock market and that’s like totally right up my Alley – and I probably plan on to get into some sort of real straight in the future, but I do agree with that.

I mean investing and real estate are really the purest forms of passive income. I think investing a lot more than real estate day I’ll talk about that. A little bit investing you literally just put money away into a company, and then you hope your money grows over time and you don’t have like actively do anything with it. Investing is a little bit different than trading investing you’re going for the long term trading you’re trying to just like you know, buy on the dips, sell on the high things like that.

But investing is about as pure as it can get, especially when you get into dividend investing because you know, regardless of if your portfolio actually goes up or down, you’re still bring in that dividend, income just simply from owning the stock, so dividend or just investing in General, whether it’s in a stock market or anything, you know, bonds, whatever is literally the purest form of passive income there can be, but there are a lot of other different streams of passive income, one including real estate, which I think is a little bit more pure Than some of the other streams real-estate, though on one hand, I know some people that do real estate, that you know own houses they rent out and things like that.

That’s main, I guess, when people think of passive income in terms of real estate, that’s what people think of. Is you basically buying an apartment or like a duplex or something like that and then renting it out, and why I don’t think there’s actually is passive, as some people might make. It think you know might think it is, unless you’re literally like just sending all the work off to someone else like you have a manager taking care of all your apartments or whatever it might be, that you’re renting out.

Then I guess. Yes, it’s more towards a passive side, but in a lot of scenarios, if you’re trying to get into real estate and if you’re trying to create an income source off of it, it’s not going to be very passive you’re, going to put putting into a lot of Work into whatever you’re doing whether it’s responding to tenants, you know chasing the boundary payments, I mean there’s the list goes on and on of things that you could be doing, you know doing repairs.

You know fixing the dishwasher that broke whatever it might be. You’re. Definitely not going to be very passive, you’re going to be working relatively actively with that, but the only reason some people call it passive is because you put in an investing in at one point in time. It’s let’s say to buy a house, then you run out that house and you’re getting that money back without actually working. You know probably nine to five.

Unless you were to have like, I don’t know dozens and dozens of property, then you just be getting into the straight-up business, wouldn’t be much of a passive income source, but investing in the real estate. I do agree with Gary. He says those are probably the purest and really only true forms of passive income, but what he was also talking about and what I agree with as well, is when a lot of people hear passive income or when a lot of people try to sell their courses Online about passive income or whatever it might be, I think a lot of people think of it as the lazy way out they think of it, as you could like put a whole lot of money aside at one point or do a little bit work at one Point in time, and then just have money, magically reappear and I don’t think passive income actually works like that, and at least all my streams don’t and I don’t think, there’s a whole lot of people out there.

That can say they can just put them certain amount of money down to put a very small amount of work down, and you know exponentially get increase their passive income streams. It just doesn’t work like that, but I do think passive income is pretty important to not only building up your own income, but just for anyone. I mean there’s literally so many different things now actually with online that you could do somewhat passively and bringing extra income whether it’s even a few hundred bucks a month.

I’m sure everyone would enjoy that, but anyways what I do for passive income there’s a whole lot of things. I do my main passive income source right now. Well, I guess you could technically say my main passive income sources investing, but I don’t consider investing a passive income stream for me just simply because I don’t take any of that money out when I get like my dividend returns. Just my overall returns when I sell stocks or anything like that, I keep it all into my portfolio.

So that’s why I don’t consider that passive income, but it is truly passive income. I just don’t take it in as income itself, but my biggest form of passive income besides, that is from YouTube and why I kind of consider it passive and not past. At the same time, one I’m pretty much making articles every single day. So I guess it isn’t passive, but I do consider it passive because, even if, like I stopped making YouTube articles for let’s say a month or two, I would still be getting a pretty decent amount of income.

You know I probably a lot less than making right now, but I still would be getting a pretty decent amount of income from like articles in the past that I made you know they’re still getting in some views. I will note that I would be making like. I just said a lot less, because most of my views are coming from the articles I post every single day now for articles I post in the past, but then again.

At the same time, if I look to my blog analytics – and I look through what articles are getting the most views as well as what articles are bringing in the most revenue, there are some articles there’s it seems to be almost random. You know I’m trying to figure out which article to get the best views and get the most likes and stuff like that. But I will admit that there are some articles, like even some articles from like a year ago, that will randomly search up and get me like 10 20 bucks here and there every now and then it seems like like if I post it I’ll.

Actually, I know a pervy example somewhat recently, with the whole Kaepernick thing with Nike. I posted a article like well over a year ago about Nike. It was just simply about their earnings apart. They had gone up a lot from it. It was a salad apart and I post a article about it and there are people commenting on it and reading it. Now I got like a few hundred extra views a couple weeks ago, because people were probably searching up Nike stock or like if I was Nike stock, doing Nike stock earnings report.

Things like that, and this article was still in the search history. I do pretty good SEO on my article, so people are still looking it up and no, they did pioneer realizes from a year ago, because people were talking about colin kaepernick on it, and I was like nobody guys talking about this articles from a year ago, but Then I was like yeah these people, but I don’t realize that because so high up in the search rankings – but anyway, is that’s an example of me posting a article a long time ago and making more money.

So that’s why I do consider YouTube somewhat passive income, and I also consider some of my other streams off of YouTube passive income. I consider like my affiliate links, are pretty passive. I do no work with that. Essentially, I just put them in the description and, if you guys, click them and, however, the ham is on it, buy something I get a small percentage of that actually consider my referral links pretty passive, because once again, that’s just me putting a link in the description.

If you go there and sign up with whether it be I’m on Finance or Robin Hood, I’d get a Robin Hood. I get a stock release say used to I maxed out of the referral program, but I went finance. I get 10 bucks and you get 10 bucks. You sign up, so that’s very, very passive and then that’s really all I have right now, but I’m sure in the future. I could, you know, have some sort of promotions or have some sort of.

I don’t know something else I plan on selling or whatever you know, we’ll see what the future holds, but so those in some of those ways are a little bit more passive than me actually creating articles every day. But one thing to note is well, I mean the time it takes me to make a article and maybe takes me, you know 10 20 minutes to upload it or to record it. I mean, and then maybe teach me like. I don’t know like a half hour to an hour, to plan the article to get everything set up to get all that stuff.

You know pre-production and post-production projects another hour to do the thumbnail, the tags, the description, the that’s just the upload time. In general I mean so yeah. It takes me a couple hours every single day, but it’s probably making me more money every single day than I would be working. Let’s say like a minimum-wage job at McDonald’s or something like that. So that is also nice as well, and I will say I’m only doing this for two hours versus if I was working another job that I didn’t like, which I enjoy doing this for eight hours.

You know that would obviously suck as well. So there are some ways to think about passive income and a positive light like I do with my youtube blog at least I think it’s pretty positive, but there are a lot of people out there and there’s a lot of people selling courses how they’re about passive Income that are complete BS and they have these kind of false beliefs about passive income. You can just sort of do a little bit of work at one point in time and then just make exponentially bigger amounts of money or they think, like a lot of people, relate that Robin Hood app to passive income because they don’t realize just a legitimate brokerage Account it’s not like some like sweat coin app.

I don’t know if you guys ever see that on Instagram I see it all over Instagram I try to do Instagram marketing, like I try to promote my investing Instagram account and literally every single account they’re. Like oh download, sweat coin. You can literally get money when you like, take a walk around the block or some like BS like that, and that’s like an example of like lazy people trying to find like a quick buck.

Real quick, that’s like reminds you so much of how people think about passive income in that regards people just think of it in a different light, and I think, if you think of it more like how I do with my youtube blog, you might be better off And you might actually be able to make a little bit a passive income and doesn’t have to just be through YouTube. It could be through other things, like I don’t know, creating your own blog, creating your own Instagram page.

It gets popular, creating a podcast and there’s a whole different bunch of different things. You could possibly do, but these guys is really if it’s article, I hope you enjoyed it. ITU INTERVIEWS @ CBS-2016: Duncan Mochama, Business Development Manager, BRCK Education

Thank you very much for being as with us in the studio this morning now. You’re here is one of young innovators, you’re, creating technological innovations here for socio-economic development. Now here in the studio, we’ve got a big black flight case here, which I don’t think it says up your personal hovercraft or or your collection of shoes.

Perhaps you can tell us a little bit about that open up the open the case and tell us what you brought with you today yeah. So this this is our holistic educational solution which we hope to digitize classrooms across Africa. So our vision is to enable the millions of children across emerging markets to get access to digital tools for better landing yeah. So what I have here is 40 tablets. It’s 40 tablets rugged to withstand the drops, the spills, the scratches that the kids actually have when they’re doing the education.

I have footy tablet here and then the operating system is locked on the land play and grow system, because we understand as brick that that is the entire cycle that kid go through yeah. So in the play section we have we have memory games. We have digital literacy games that enable students actually have good memory yeah in the in the in the land section we have partnered with digital content providers like a limo, ekiti Abu who have digitized their content yeah and then in the gross section we have extra curriculum Content where kids can learn about digital safety, they can learn about responsible citizenship yeah.

They can learn about vision, 2030 here in Kenya, agenda 2063 in Africa or even the sustainable development goals. All this is is going in this key tablet and there are 40 tablets in this kit. Is that right, yes, you’re, developing and designing the solution? We realize that if you go over 40 students, then the student-teacher ratio will be they’ll, be an imbalance yeah. So that’s why we designed our our solution just to to fit exactly that yeah great and in terms of how they connect up their tablets here to the content.

How does that work exactly so here we have a micro server where all the contents are stored here. Yeah, so for digital safety we have locked down, there were operating system assists, as I told you before. All the content is loaded here and then it broadcasts to the 40 tablets yeah. There are no cameras on the tablets, as you can see, so that we can ensure a digital safety. If you walk away with this tablet, then it will be useless to you, yeah and so you’re able to modify the content and update it, etc.

Yes, yes, how do they do that? How do the the the teachers do that so three ways you can you can accomplish that? One is by actually having a USB stick put it in here and then you can be able to update the content. The other way is, you can do it over the internet, so the brick here has gsm capabilities, there’s an ethernet capability. So at night, when the students are sleeping, then the tablet is actually uploading content into eat.

Yes, and what about the power of is because I mean I know – I mean I, my daughter’s got a tablet that she uses at school, but she often forgets to charge it etc. What happens what happens to these tablets? How can they be charged fantastic? Now we designed our solution is designed for Africa. We understand that we have infrastructure problems which mainly his power and connectivity, so our our Q, kid has only one charging port and the tablets themselves charge wirelessly.

So if a kid actually just drops the tablet in in any direction, then it can be able to charge wirelessly at night. It charges six hours and during the day it can take the entire school day and what kind of feedback? If you had on this sofa in all of the schools that we had the Performing Polly, the kids could not read yeah, but now with the games with some of the story books like obongo. Now we found that their testicles cause actually went up yeah in the garage school.

What are the schools actually taught? The constituency yeah and it’s more fun in class. Kids are asking more questions. Their curiosity levels have increased here and now they can be able to solve basic problems. So that’s the kind of feedback we’re getting when when you establish in the queue kid and in terms of the tablet that you developed this tablet, did it start off looking differently or how I roses? Yes! Well, yes, one of the cornerstones that we we have at brick is a user experience.

So previously these headphones were black yeah and we found that it took a lot of time for kids actually to know which earphones goes on, which year and the rest. So when the user experience team actually observed that that’s when now, we actually cut the color coded the headphones and put a big art on the right and a big girl on the left and you’ve actually established that even landing becomes starts from there.

Whether it is just a is ok ways, your show me your right ear and then raise your left here and then now put that there. Then we actually realize that landing begins there, yeah right and your based here in Kenya, but you understand you you’re offering the solution to the Solomon Islands. Yes, so you’re you’re expanding globally. Yes, our team is based here and we’re trying to solve local problems, but we are constantly thinking of global problems and solomon islands.

Malawi right now. We actually translating some of the contents into spanish and in terms of the future, how do you hope that this will grow for you, one of the problems that you’re having in Africa is: how do you, how do you actually enable? How do you build capacity for the disabled, so in our roadmap we are looking at making it friendly to the disciple. How can they get the experience better yeah? How can we actually enable individuals yeah? This is designed for school yeah down down the road we’re going to have individual tablets where you can say as a child go with it at home, go teach you your parents, about the sustainable development goals and and the opportunities there.

I just immense, and in terms of an investment for a school I mean how much, how much would this this kit set them back? Our vision is to enable the millions of children across the emerging markets, so we have also met the kid very affordable. So, with five thousand dollars you get the 40 tablets, you get the ruggedized guess you get a 40 earphones and also the extendable charger. So that’s the investment that that a school puts in right, you’re, definitely making inroads there in to affordability and and accessibility as well.

Why don’t you just make it public probably well. This is what I say Sergio. It sounds like to me how the fuck are people supposed to love. Your second account content. If they can’t see it, I know the idea about the you post content only for the right amount of people and it’s more secretive.

But for your case I don’t think you have a distribution problem. I just think you forgot to turn your settings to public yeah. That’s right Sergio fan club. Anyone who wants to start one for surgery – I don’t I don’t know if you guys can see it’s just it’s just getting clumpy hi you’re on the ask Jay, oh hi, Marilyn from Wisconsin. What’s up, how can I help you much harder and ever have like work 10 times it’s hard to get noticed because of it? Do I totally see that fresh nation down on myself, even if I work really hard on something shocking notice, on like Instagram out shadow face right? I know it’s tough.

I mean here’s my thing it’s like when you are posting art right, cuz, you’re, an artist you create things that you love and you see, however, an audience or essentially like someone scrolling might not give a shape. Art is very personal, and I don’t know I have here. The quote this is this might be actually cool, because I know you you create so there’s a quote: that’s like the birth of the audience as a death of the author, typically people who are successful online.

They basically make content and a love, but they also kind of find cause of that people also give a shit and they find that in between. I don’t think you have to pick one one or the other. Have you ever thought about your social media? Your Commission’s, as a giant funnel where your awareness to get more commissions you have to build your social, is basically a funnel and have you thought of it that way or you don’t see it that way: cool okay! First step we got it, you know as an artist, it’s frustrating to know like okay.

Shit like this is my craft, but I also have to build the business side, which is boring, but it seems like to me just think about as a funnel. Your awareness is to get more commissions and then the bottom of your fun. So once you kind of see it like that fan, art is an amazing idea. I love it Marilyn what I would do even better and step further and the next steps after that is to just draw people that have your audience and what you can do is segment their fans into your page.

So if the relic question marilyn is, do you like matcha? Oh you do. Oh, my gosh love email, no talking to Marilyn is super refreshing because I was in her place about a year ago, like I always thought I did a site between YouTube or Instagram and my business and making money and we’re school and here’s a damn shirt. Okay, it’s not you have to think about it as a giant funnel, because how the fuck is your business going to run? If you don’t have awareness and customers, my parents, I love them so much.

I’ve been always told when I was young. I had to pick like I couldn’t do everything I want to know. I used to do YouTube articles with makeup, but it just made me happy and I was so frustrated because people would tell me, like I had to pick one. You know make money or you know, do your crafts, but I think more than ever you can combine it. So I actually have a whole article about content marketing and how to build a funnel I’ll link it below.

What’s what’s your goal for maybe something you would say you want to reach by the end of this year. You’re doing great, though your YouTube views. This is what I have to say: you’re right about the YouTube being unpredictable. So here’s the thing for any small blog, it’s ok, failing or having low views, because you seriously only need to be right once so, don’t be afraid about failure or, like you’re, doing a great job with posting twice a week.

I feel like people think, like you, have to post consistently and then you’re going to blow up and no it’s really like. You only need like three viral articles and that will take your blog to say it. Like a hundred thousand, I figure on the right track. I’d have a weird idea for you. I don’t know how much that this will work, but have you seen the article called drinking 45 litres of boba challenge? What do you think? I think morality here, just using your very I’m just looking at your blog and you’d pick up a lot of cure.

It’s like San Jose, a walkable foods. It’s your gramma! Both foods like this is very good keyword stuff, and this is what I would call Evergreen related content like peep when people land on it. It’s like almost like there’s no really age to it. You’d only have some challenges, or you know, trends that they last for a month and they’re gone. No one really reades it. What you’re doing is great its long-term evergreen content and it’s actually something where it’s good long-term, but you need that’s short-term little viral type stuff and that shit is a weird-ass stuff.

That’s, like you know it’s the fat. It’s those trends. It’s those boba challenges. It’s those! Ten thousand calorie – it’s like those type of articles so but I always recommend. Actually I learned is from my friends stared each II, she’s also youtuber and she’s like yeah. I always do a article, that’s one for me, one for you, one article, that’s evergreen or like just something I like and one for you, which is going to be a please to the larger market.

So I would maybe because I see you’re picking up so good on SEO, which is actually the first advice they give you so at least so you’re kind of more advanced. So this is where I think you need to look for trends and be the first one to pounce on it. Basically, when you want to look for a next spicy noodle challenge and then be the one of the first people, do you know what that article is for you next, it’s a hundred buck.

What I think is I just like to browse my recommended, because I know you to be recommending to me they’re going to recommend to other people, so I mean there’s really no mathematical formula. My best recommendation for you is to really pry on those recommended articles and see why they’re popping they try to be more experimental instead of food tours will help you at least get that wider audience and that shock value I mean I I don’t want you to Chug, like 45 litres, a bigger but like if that takes, let me know and I’ll share with the domination and we’ll read it if YouTube growth.

Is that meaningful to you you’re going to do it right, even better, not cause? I’m joking, please don’t, please all exact. Please don’t so I recommend just get it focusing 50/50 on evergreen and morality content. Oh my gosh, when I’m an SF we’re going to grab Mothra, okay, all right at least. To do SEO related content and to grow, but if you’re, hitting a market cap or you’re hitting a wall where you’re not going any further. Think about those crazy, innovative ideas, because this is where I have to say, I think so. Many people in the beginning start with SEO and like doing keywords which is, like you know, content that people search for so instead of just doing a vlog, you do a how-to, because people search for certain things right, but there’s a certain point where you just need To think outside the box do the crazy marketing is always changing.

So, if we’re not constantly innovating, then all we’re doing is recycling old content and we’re not really being innovated and 10 Xing we’re just growing by that little 10 % and, like I said before, YouTube is not about just incremental growth. All the time. Sometimes you have to do the viral article to take your blog to the next level and same with Instagram. It’s not like you post, consistently and you’re just going to grow at 10 %.

No sometimes it’s just a white article that it goes 10x and that’s when you get your moment and you don’t have to be right all the time. You literally only be right once so, don’t be afraid of failure. You know, if you’re not being able to take that first step, fail fast, break things, then you’re not truly innovating, because innovation requires that chance of failure. So I know a lot of us are perfectionist.

We’re creators were artists, but we need to be able to innovate and take the leap of faith, even if that means failure. So with that being said, I hope this gives you an opportunity to take action, even if you don’t feel like it. Instead of “sales funnels” — let people move organically at their own pace

That may be the number one problem I have with sales funnels is that it artificially tries to move people along a particular path when they may or may not be ready yet, and so I no longer have a sales funnel that I manage, and I don’t use Systems such as Infusionsoft or ontraport, I honestly think most people sign on to those systems way too early. They end up paying hundreds of dollars a month unnecessarily and they could have spent that money more wisely, so to actually grow their business rather than to have an unnecessary expense.

So what do I recommend? What do I recommend, instead of having a sales funnel that you’re managing? Now, I’m talking to those of you who are service providers who want to make a true livelihood? Who want to keep your business simple rather than complex? You want to be able to make a good living coaching counseling, consulting teaching, what you love right. So what I recommend is, instead of a sales funnel that you create a pathway that you don’t have to consciously move people through, but that they themselves move.

They move themselves through it organically at their own pace. So, for example, my pathway is very simple. I have consistent, I hope, authentic and, I hope, relevant content that I share for free. You know that because you’re reading this article right now – and I so I do this – you know a couple times a week and it’s easy for me to do. I’m here walking my dog Buddy. I don’t know if you can see them right there I mean we’re.

We’re on a regular walk and I just pull up the phone I had. This idea wanted to share it with you and I’m sure you have ideas too, in your field of expertise that you could share with your audience little tips here and there that you think may be obvious to you or maybe it’s a breakthrough for you. But you share it anyway, so that you can maybe benefit others as well. So that’s the first part of the pathway and then, after that some people decide to go to my website.

They might look at some of the archived content that I have, but they also discovered that I have online workshops that I run every month very affordable on the variety of interesting topics. So they sign on to the one that they’re interested in and they come to. The workshop most of them love it and after that they may say gosh. I want to work more with George, because I want georgeous, in-depth customized expertise into my business.

So then they go back to my website and find that they that I provide one-on-one services, and so they contact me about that and so what ever? Since I have done this very natural organic pathway, that is an alternate to a sales funnel. It’s worked amazingly well, and so I don’t know I no longer think about gosh. I’ve got to follow up with so, and so it’s been six months since I’ve contacted them. I better reach out to them and say: hey how’s it going now.

I used to do that I’ll, tell you this and it never was very effective, and so I really would encourage you to create consistent, authentic, relevant content and have some lower priced offerings so that people can can try you out at those levels before they then try. You out at higher price levels. So if you do that on a consistent basis, you don’t need the the artificial feeling of a sales funnel and that kind of relationship with your audience.
