Google Analytics – Tim Butler – Feb 2018 WordPress Brisbane

Firstly, isn’t using Google Analytics okay, okay, excellent, so basically a lot of people don’t have sort of any metrics and bits and pieces of their site. So it’s basically why? Why do you need to know this sort of information if you’re doing site changes? So if you’re changing themes, you’re adding plugins you’re, adding content, you want to be able to measure what those changes are.

So you want to see before and after are you getting more visitors? Are you getting less? Sometimes not. Everything is a positive sort of spin. So you want to be able to measure what’s actually caring for your site if you’re doing any sort of SEO, so you’re writing content, you’re, doing optimization bits and pieces again. You want to be able to measure what those changes actually are and it’s really also to determine who’s visiting.

You saw it so understanding your customer, who is actually visiting your site who’s coming back, who are the user bases that you should actually be targeting? So basically the good thing about Google Analytics is: you can collect everything. So if you’re really into statistics and analyzing a bits and pieces, it will confuse you initially. But there is a lot of data and a lot of detail you can actually gain out of it.

So, quite simply to get started. You need to sign up for a Google Analytics account being Google. Of course it means you need to have a Google account to start with. So all you got to do is sign in go to google.Com forward, slash analytics and it’ll sort of start to step you through the process. It’s a very simple sort of thing sort of shows up there. Basically, what what they’ll provide you is a tracking code.

So if you’ve ever visited, especially a European sites where cookies and bits and pieces must be announced – and I got a thing down the bottom to say – you know you’re you’re, currently visiting a site and there’s a cookie to track you most of that is normally Google Analytics about 70 % of sites have Google Analytics running on it and what you’ll sort of get is a funny sort of string. That looks like this.

This is obviously just an example one, but basically that string is then unique to your site. So Google then give you a little bit of code or, of course, being WordPress there’s plugins available, so one of the most common ones used. Is the Google Analytics by monster insights? So this plug-in not only adds it to your site to track, but it can also display some of the stats as well or if you’ve got a pre-existing sort of paid theme like a vada or Divya Dan bits and pieces.

They normally have a section where you can add that sort of code in so Avada just have a nice field to add your tracking code in so all you got to do is copy that code in Divi. Just give you a spot to copy the code in and again, Google give you that code that you can just copy and paste paste in there. So, basically, that’s all it takes to get set up and start to analyze, who’s visiting your site and where they’re sort of coming from so then the real fun begins, is actually analyzing.

All of the data that’s collected so I’ll go through some of the basics of this nilly. Every section in here you could spend 40 minutes talking about and some of the SEO guys would love to spend that amount of time talking about so just try and give the overall sort of picture to guide you through. So one of the key things: if you’re reading blogs about content and SEO and sort of analyzing your data and how long people should spend on your site and how many pages they should visit is there’s no real, perfect number.

The numbers will be unique to you and your site, and so depending on the page, depending on your market, each of that’s going to change each time. So if you’re reading articles where they say you know they must spend ten minutes on the site, they must spend this amount of time, don’t necessarily take them as gospel, but what it will give you is ability to measure the changes. So if they were spending twenty seconds, you’ve added more content, they’re now spending a minute on your site.

You’ve got a good improvement, so you’ve got that change there to measure. So the other thing to remember about comparing is to compare the same time period. Like everybody, Monday mornings can be a bit of a drag, so if you’re, comparing sort of mondays to Tuesday’s you’ll, see different data. So if you’re going to look at it, look at the same period sort of each time weekend’s, especially you might get different markets.

Looking at it, so it may be that you need to look at those time periods and analyze and sort of optimize differently for those as well. So in old terminology, a lot of people used to measure their website by the amount of hits onto the site. So it was a great way to inflate the number of people to the site because a hit sort of measures any sort of requests to the server. So if you’ve got a hundred images, loading that would generate a hundred hits every time somebody loaded the page Google tends to talk about sessions mainly and also users, so they’re the real value, so users are essentially unique visitors to the site.

Little cookie gets stored on their machine, so if they return, they’ll actually generate another session, and therefore you can sort of measure that as well and yeah. So sessions are just how many times that user came back and how many times they sort of loaded the site. One of the really neat things about Google Analytics is will actually give you a real-time data. So if you’ve got a lot of people coming to your site, it’s a really good motivator to actually see people hitting your site where they’re going to – and you know where.

They’re also coming from so Google Google gives you a real-time sort of view of that data as it’s sort of flowing through audience. So the main sort of section I guess to analyze is you now got sort of the data of how many sort of overall users to your site? So Google will break that down into sort of subcategories as well in terms of how many new users versus how many returning. So you can see this site, we’ve got only 20 % returning visitors and about 80 % sort of you use new visitors.

So if you’re sort of started a new marketing campaign and looking for new customers, these are the sort of figures that you want to be looking at. Are you actually getting the same users coming back or oh you’re, getting more users or new users sigh? So one little tip and a lot of people forget to do it because they think they’ll remember, is when you’re making changes. Google allows you to add annotations basically allows you to log events.

So if you publish a blog or you get featured on a website, you make a change like you, optimize your site or a load on you, you plug in or upgrade WordPress. You can actually mark that in a time period there. So you can see over time and see to go back because sometimes you’ll get a spike in traffic or a dip in traffic and you’ll. You remember at the time, but twelve months later, when you go what was that funny spike again, you can actually reference that to see actually what’s occurred, so if it sort of shows up when you’re in the any of the sort of user sort of views, you’ll See the create new annotation on the side here, so basically, there should be the blue little little link there.

If you don’t have any there, you won’t see any of the yellow sort of bar. So if you’ve got multiple ones, they’re normally hidden by default and that’s what the little drop-down at the bottom provides for you. So it shows up as the little I guess comment sort of field along your timeline. So another good thing, and thankfully it’s becoming less and less of a problem, but still very much a problem, especially if you’re targeting government users is what browser are people using to browse your site.

Browser compatibility is, unfortunately, still a problem, so you can sort of look at the data and go if my customer base like, for example here is, you know in nearly 60 % Chrome, and only 3 percent of users are actually using Internet Explorer. Is it worth my time to make sure it works perfectly for Internet Explorer or mi sort of wasting money and time and effort that could be spent elsewhere? So you can get an insight into what your customer base is.

These figures are sort of based on. I can’t even remember what sort of time frame of the ADA website and snapshot, but they are typical figures. You’ll typically see crime is the biggest sort of browser usage these days, you can also then dig into it to get their operating system details as well. So if you were selling software or selling systems, you probably want to know whether there are Mac user or whether they’re a Windows user and therefore you know, are you attracting the rights that a user base and, of course, mobile? Everything, of course, is now sort of flipped on its head.

It used to be that it was designed for desktop and sort of make things responsive so that it would render on your mobile these days, depending on the markets and the sort of industry you’re in some people or some industries are, you know, mobile first now, because Majority of their traffic is now on mobile devices, so things like Facebook and bits and pieces. There are more people that browse Facebook on their phone than they do on the desktop desktops in a massive sort of decline in that sort of market and e-commerce and service sort of industries.

So you can see that change over time as well. So Google Analytics you can go well. What was it like this time last year and if it’s has started to swing heavily, you can go well. You know this year. I need to spend the time to actually start to do all the mobile optimizations, rather than just sort of the bare minimum to make it work. You can then break it down into the particular device and phone that they’re using.

So it will give you as much detail as you sort of want on those sort of users so for this instance, obviously 30 %, where I’m I phone users, so you can sort of go well there. The market I’m after or you know, I made sure it worked perfectly on the mobile phone. So therefore, on our iPhone 30 % of my markets, you know going to see the site perfectly. You can see on the list. There were two users that use their Windows RT tablet, which is a little bit of a Microsoft thing that came and went very quickly, but you can sort of look at and go well to users, there’s no point making it work for them.

They’re, certainly not going to give me any return it. So acquisition gave two examples: sort of here of two different sites, and basically this is sort of telling you where people are coming from so organic search is all your search. Engine means you’re. Looking at majority is still obviously Google these days. People are, you know, googling for your content or your site and sort of coming through that way.

You’ve got then got people that have come direct, so they’ve taught your URL into the browser or had a bookmark sort of thing and go on there. You then got referral traffic so if you’ve been linked from another site or linked from another blog. This is your referral traffic and then, of course, your social media side. So you’ve got your everything from YouTube to Facebook to Twitter Instagram, so you can sort of track where those users are actually coming from and depending on your market.

These values are going to vary. Quite significantly, so just to give us sort of a bit of a breakdown. This was just another is sort of example. If you’re a blogger sort of thing, that does a lot of YouTube sort of articles, you can see very heavily. Everything came from YouTube for this particular site. Basically, you can start to break down and work out where your market markets coming from. So if you need to optimize for a certain market or you ran a campaign, you boosted, your you know, YouTube ads or your in Facebook ads.

You can start to actually measure how many people that brought to your site, because you can see the path that they came to you so going from a social media point of view. It covers automatically all the different social media platforms. You may only have two or three different platforms that you’re targeting, but at least you’ll see how many people were coming from there. So one of the good things about Google Analytics is you can compare different time periods so you can go this month.

I ran a campaign or last month, arena campaign. Did I sustain users or did they start to drop down and you can also see? Maybe you didn’t share the content, but somebody else shared your content. So this week I had an extra thousand people visit the site. Where did they actually come from? This? Gives you a summary, but you can keep digging down to the exact URL. Essentially that referred you there.

So it gives you that opportunity to sort of really figure out where your markets coming from page views, so meetup actually gives you the ability to track page views as well. So I sort of just pull them out as a quick example. Obviously, as one of the organizers of the Ipswich sort of meetup, so you can see which page they came into your site, you can see how many hits and then you can sort of dig detail quite heavily down into those sort of areas, especially if you’ve got Multiple landing pages, so you may be targeting a Brisbane market and you’ve tailored a page for them.

You can see whether they’ve come in via that site. From a kinetics point of view, we have one a very first sort of support article that we ever wrote has somehow been our most popular one on the entire site. We have no idea why or how, but we always see it so analytics or tagay gave us that view to sort of figure out where all these users coming from. So we could see multiple different forums, sort of linking in bits and pieces.

So we wouldn’t have known that sort of looking at it unless we, you know, really started to dig down into the data analytics. You look at it in seconds and you can already start sort of digging into that information, so site speed. So as Rob sort of touched on your website, performance matters and matters greatly matters from an SEO perspective, it matters from an engaging a user perspective. If your site’s, not loading quickly, users will become very disinterested very quickly.

I think Amazon said they can think for every point, one of a second slower, their site loads or perceived to be loaded. They lose one percent sort of thing of their. You know potential market, so users can drop off very very quickly if you’ve got a slow loading site. So the good thing about analytics is. It also starts to break down that data down into multiple different things. So you can see if you’re, targeting more than one region you can see based on country, you know, is your site loading slow, but especially these days with the different technologies.

You can see from a browser perspective, so you can see for this example foxes. Obviously, you know the quickest to load the slide the site, but in an explorer is twice as slow to load. This particular example, so you could sort of determine if Internet Explorer was a big part of your market and it’s twice as slow as everyone else. You need to sort of do some work or you know, talk to your developer to help sort of optimize that area.

But basically you wouldn’t gather that information. You know, unless you had analytics there to sort of provide that for you so behavior flow. So rather than just saying you know they visited your site, they viewed a page. You can now start to dig down into what they’re actually doing on your site, so the behavior flow sort of gives you a where they sort of started from so give you the landing page where they came in and then they’ll start to show you the first Interaction and second interaction, so the good thing about this is, you can go, will they dropped off straightaway or they dropped off at this point? So this is where I need to optimize.

So if you’re running a ecommerce platform and your end goal is to get them to the checkout, but they stopped at the product page or they stopped at the checkout and sort of didn’t complete. You can sort of see where they drop off and it’ll give you percentages of where those users dropped off. You may be running yep yep, so I can yeah give you a quick, that’s right, yeah! I should show you the the flow of yeah how to find them, but basically you can start to see you know where users are dropping off and why they’re dropping off, and it may be that you’re running two different campaigns.

So you can see the results of you know. Did this one actually help convert? Did it get get them through to you know, filling out a contact form? Did it get them to the shopping cart? Did they stop the front page? Will they get two pages in and then drop off, so you can sort of work out where you need to spend the time to optimize and add content or figure out what what the users you know, sort of were missing and, of course, being Google and being Able to collect lots of data it’ll, give you a little bit of demographics, so you can sort of get an idea of you know what age group is sort of visiting, whether they’re, male or female.

So this can be especially important from an e-commerce point of view, and this data will obviously change. So you can filter it by all users. You can go down to particular products, so you may run an e-commerce platform that targets. You know multiple different demographics, whether it’s by sex by age and you can sort of go well. Are they actually funneling into the right area? Are they viewing the pages or wander’d than you know targeted at them or have I got a problem, so you can sort of dig you out some of that detail to find out where your users are coming from and sort of who they are so average time On page, there’s, probably the biggest question I normally hear about from an SEO point of view and again there is no magic sort of figure people’s engagement and, as I sort of you know, as pointed out that eight seconds is a common.

You know engagement that people will hold these days. I’ve seen people write blogs that are detailed and thoroughly interesting sort of broken blogs that you know maybe 4,000 words and take you. You know a good 10 minutes to digest their average time on page can be very low. It may be that users dropped off very quickly. It may be that you know the mark, it wasn’t targeted at the right market, so it may be great content.

So those times will vary so basically, if your average time on page got to look at the page, if it’s heavy on content and they’re dropping off, you know within 60 seconds you may have an issue. If it’s a contact page, then obviously they’re probably not going to spend you know more than a minutes that are filling out their details or adding their email address into a list, so always sort of reference.

The time that you want them to spend on the page to the actual page, in the content that they’ve got and bounce rate so essentially don’t be scared by the numbers. The majority of websites have 80 plus percent bounce rates for most of their pages. So this basically means they came in and looked at a page and they went yes, oh they didn’t go any further, didn’t look at any other pages and that can be you’ve got to look at why that is from a kinetics point of view.

We have a lot of support articles if they’ve got the information they required, and you know they did a Google search found the you know page that fix their solution. There’s no reason for them to actually go and click. You know twenty other links, sort of thing. So you’ve got to look at the. Why of the bounce rates, if you can certainly yeah start to sort of dig dig out the information. So if there’s a choke point essentially of where you want to you know, start users from and get users to and they’re stopping at some point, then obviously you know if that page has a high bounce rate, then you probably need to change something there.

So if you’re an e-commerce platform or a service sort of industry, so you know if you’re running a plumbing website, you want people to book at the end, but they’re stopping at the page. That has your price on or has you know not enough? There may be something missing that they’ve sort of become disinterested so commonly what’s used is a call to action and that’s an easy way of sort of gathering users.

It may be that they’re leaving your site as much as it’s an annoyance. A lot of the sites where you move your cursor away from the browser will go to hit back and it pops up and says before you leave. You know enter your email address or bits and pieces. It’s a very effective way of doing things. The other is to have you know if you’re, writing, blogs and bits and pieces is to get users to sign up that way.

You can send them an email. When you’ve got new content, you can drive them back to your site on a constant sort of basis. So some of the little advanced features that you consider dig out of analytics. One of the really neat features I find is being able to set goals, and this is just being able to track conversions. So, from an e-commerce point of view, it’s an easy way to you know you want to get people to the shopping cart, but if you’re running a basic website – and you want them to contact you – then one of the easiest conversions to try and track is: did They go to the contact page, you know, did they it doesn’t? You can even just measure you know.

Did they make it to the page that I don’t have to fill out the form if they went and looked up your details to find your number or bits and pieces, then you know you’ve got sort of their interest. So if your whole goal is to sort of get them, you know to engage with you, you can sort of start to track that that process. So, there’s a number of different examples that Google will sort of give you out of the box, whether you want them to place an order and go to the contact us, whether you want them to read, reviews and sort of run through so to set up a Goal this is where you actually have to do things so most the other areas in analytics you essentially just clicking, and it’s more of a digestion of information.

Rather than adding information in goals, you sort of have to do a little bit of setup and the admin area can be a little bit confusing, but literally just to track the contact sort of pages. All you have to do is that you know you put your URL in so if they went to forward slash contact on your website, that’s a conversion. You know that’s a goal that you’ve set. What you can also do – and you can see that it’s sort of listed optionally is set a funnel, so it may be that you wanted to take them through a journey.

So if you’re a builder or you know, have a building sort of website, you may have wanted the users to actually have a look at some of your display homes. First because then you know, you’ve got the right market, you’ve got them interested, and so you can build up a funnel to sort of flow through there, as well, so probably quite not quite able to read down the back. But what the really interesting bit ahead of some of the goals and bits and pieces also gives you is it’ll, look at the your previous data.

So if you thought you know, I should have been tracking this goal. It’ll actually start to give you some of the information, so you can see for this particular goal would have had a three point: six percent conversion rate based on your last seven days. So if I wanted users, you know to view a view, our support articles and then go to our contact page. We would have had a three percent to the conversion rate out of that which is quite good, so exportable reporting, especially if you’re a web design agency or have customers.

You can sort of set up automation to start sending them reports and sending them information. There’s a add-on for Google sheets, which is the sort of Excel equivalent where you can actually pull this information directly into Google sheets. You can then set it up on an automated basis to generate a report to email out and bits and pieces. So you make yourself look really good in front of a customer, because you’ve got all this systems, doing all the work, making reports and charts in the background and sending it sort of through to them one of the new areas where Google has built yet another tool And made it available is a data studio.

So it’s just data studio, google calm and this is sort of an example of building one of their sort of tools. So, if you’ve ever sort of wanted to lay out graphs and bits and pieces on a page and figures and numbers, what Google allows you to do is build this as a template, so it doesn’t render it in terms of their your fixed numbers. You can have it as a dashboard. You can send a link out to a client, give them sort of read-only access, so they can view that data all the time it may be tailored.

Obviously, this examples from a search point of view. You know what what keywords are people searching for? It may be that you have multiple different sort of the search reports or the data studio sort of reports allows you to add multiple pages and export and bits and pieces as well. So you can have a 20 page report that you’ve customized you do it once you can then import data from every single site.

You have run it through generate and sort of provide that sort of information. So it’s a really neat way, especially if you’ve got a dashboard display. I want to sort of really customize how these set of graphs and how the data that comes, Google, Analytics sort of displays data studio is sort of a fairly new tool from Google, so they’re still adding bits all the time into their system. I’d say over sort of the next 12 months: they’ll continue to enhance and sort of make the process easier as well and, of course, everything out of Google.

These days is sort of being driven by all their artificial intelligence, so they’re built it into analytics as well. So there’s this little blue icon. That appears on the right-hand side now and you can start to at the moment typing. But you can ask a question so you know how many users visited my site this week or you know, what’s the most popular browser in January. So you can start to use English terms and it will sort of generate data and report for you in a in a much more useable manner, so it all becomes overwhelming.

Give this a go. It’s actually quite good. If you haven’t used Google home, where you can just sort of ask questions, this is a very similar sort of interface. So you can see in this example, is how many users did we have last week and has told you that you know. I’ve told told me that there was 4,000 177 users, so rather than trying to figure out, because analytics can become confusing with multiple different tabs in areas.

You’ve got a central point. You can just get a nice simple figure out of there from so alternatives. Obviously, this has all been focused on Google Analytics. Some people do have an aversion or a workplace restriction where they can’t use. Google Google does obviously collect this information that they can also use anonymized sort of elsewhere as well. So a lot of people you know want to know. What’s what sort of available there’s one main sort of example? And, of course, when I went to view their website they’ve now rebranded again as of about a week ago, so Mitama I think I’ve pronounced it right.

Is there their new sort of name, but it was per week, which is an open source sort of analytic platform. So it works in a reasonably similar manner to Google Analytics – it’s probably not as advanced, but the advantage is because it’s open source you can run it on your platform. I also have a hosted version as well and, of course, being WordPress is a nice, easy plug-in that you can just install and sort of integrate with your site.

So if you’re running it yourself, the downside is obviously that you need to maintain it. So you need to be the one sort of running the updates and bits and pieces. Google is software as a service, so you don’t have to do any software updates and bits and pieces. The only other main alternative is a lot of hosting companies, have little sort of inbuilt stats and bits and pieces. Basically, don’t don’t use these stats, they won’t give you any real value sort of out of the system.

All they will give. You is who you know how many hits to your site and a lot of browsers and a lot of systems. These days are scrubbing information and Facebook. Sorry Firefox just announced recently that they’re going to start scrubbing the referral out so generally, when you clicked on a site it sort of sent that information. You know if you clicked on a link in Facebook when you clicked on that link, it sent referral sort of information to your site, so you could see it came from Facebook from a privacy perspective.

The browsers are now starting to remove that information. So the information that you get just on your web hosting point of view is going to get less and less and less and less in the sort of server logs. So any of the inbuilt systems are going to. You know not give you the full story and certainly not going to give you any actual value out of the data. If you know 200 people visited your site, it doesn’t sort of give you any value to go well, you know where did they come from and who you know which sort of social media platform and that’s my quick sort of run-through of Google Analytics so noting that We’ve got pizzas Haughton sort of turned up up the back.

I’r happy to take questions it’s more more, just like their public service, so you show the screenshot all. We did like a couple of themes, wait to put the analytics code to the think. It’s not really a very good idea, because if you change things and a couple of years down the track, you change things and at some point you realize you so one of the things, a question that was showing it’s not supposed to be doing that because they’re Fairly old, okay, another good example to use a plugin that sort of helps you do it, because then you can ensure that it’s, if you change themes, it’ll be tracked so from a google analytics perspective, because it’s using that unique tracking code, it doesn’t really care too Much there is where you can set the preferences in there to help fill throughout some of the data where it makes a big difference is within the Google search console, which is the result.

Basically, you use what’s in your wordpress set up analytics is yeah is smart enough to because WordPress will always if you go to like if you use http://www.Hp.Com their search console, which is sort of not showing in this tool. You can’t change it. So you’ve got to re-add it again and then re link it back into analytics. So there’s no ability to change within their solar system me loot, lis. Yes, so Google has like everything: they’ve got they’ve got api’s sort of the Lord they’ve got automatic exporters.

They, like the data studio, is one example where it just sort of remotely connects into sort of pulled that information in they’ve got their bigquery and all their other sort of platforms where you can export data quite easily out of the system. So unless you, I think, 200,000 pages a day above it’s free, so it’s completely free all of the tools that were showing all of the areas all of the sort of views that they give.

You are completely free, and I know even the big guys who are doing much more than what they should be allowed to on. The free system continue to sort of go on so from Google’s perspective. They provide it for free because they get. I guess anonymize generalized to the data elet, so they can get the trends of you know what browsers people are using. They can get trends of that sort of information so that informations valuable enough to them that they can offer their tool sets for free.

So, just a sort of show, if you haven’t ever sort of looked through analytics all of the tabs and bits and pieces is talking about. So you got the real-time sort of views. You’ve got the audience. If you want to play around Google, give you access to some of their demo sort of bits, so this is their demo, one of their demos, sort of stores. So you can see the users coming in because you may not have enough data yet to sort of start.

If you want to start playing around and seeing how it works. So you can bring up the audience sort of overview and that’s where you can start to see the users dig down into the details, so you may want to dig down from a country point of view. You know where are these users coming from, so it allows you just to keep digging and digging and sort of pulling in further layers and layers and layers and again this is your little intelligence sort of link up the top.

So if you want to ask you know, you know how many users came last week, you know what am I best referring sources, so it’s trying to give it a nice human way of asking questions and sort of gathering that information here. It then shows you in terms of search, so you can start to look at you know this is obviously just looking at February. I want to look at the last 30 days on a lot look at the last 60 days, or the other thing it allows you to do is compare so you’re going to do is to compare two and it will compare automatically to the previous sort of period.

So if I hit apply here, you can see the orange line is the comparison, so it will sort of show you that you know this particular example. You know there was a 1 % sort of drop in users if you’re an Amazon where you’ve got millions of users a day. A 1 % sort of drop is probably significant if you’re a small business, 1 %. You know, probably within you know the typical sort of statistical differences that sort of occur naturally, but it sort of gives you that ability.

So you can start to see whether there was a big swing. There was a little swing and you know what actually occurred then. So if you’ve done the right thing, you can see here the little annotation we could see what went on so you can see a rise in traffic here, so you can sort of remember our. So that’s when I published an article or you know this particular example. Just said it, you know, I got featured on news.

Com today, you so normally, if it’s on a big site, you’ll see a steep sort of incline that you can sort of start to see, and you know I compared to the previous set of timeframes. If you’ve got it like within a plugin sort of thing, it automatically adds it into every single page so that little tracking – I don’t know, if there’s an automated system to automate the the annotations yeah so that potentially there is a plug-in that’s available to sort of Do that because yeah, if you can save yourself time, potentially that can be added in as well any other questions, I’m sort of floating around rest of the night.

So if you’ve got other questions, you just want to want to ask them I’ll. Try and um yeah answer them for you.

RailsConf 2016 – Turbolinks 5: I Can’t Believe It’s Not Native! by Sam Stephenson

You might know me from some of my open source contributions. I worked on. A lot of projects are being pal and tricks’. Most recently, I was one of the original rails core members back in the day, though I think nearly all of my code has been deleted, or at least by now I hope I work for base camp, and last year we launched an all new version of base Camp called base camp 3.

We created it in 18 months from the initial concept through dozens of designs and iterations and changes, and it’s a it’s. A big app has over 200 screens and we shipped it in 18 months on five different platforms simultaneously, so desktop web browser, mobile web browser and Android Native Client, an iOS native client and email, and we did all this with a tiny team at base camp. We have six rails developers, Android developers and iOS to others, and we also built three open source frameworks during that time period.

Tricks which is our rich text, editor action, cable, which I’m sure you’re familiar with in rails, 5 and also turbolinks 5, and this all sounds kind of unbelievable. When I say it that we managed to do all of this. But really the Rowling’s 5 was a secret weapon. They let us do it and it’s an entirely new version of turbolinks and it’s one of the banner features of rails 5 and it’s what I’m here to talk about today, so how many of you are familiar with turbo links, anyone right! It’s that thing you have to disable every time you started, I know, but seriously it’s it’s that thing that breaks all your jQuery, plugins, no turbolinks is misunderstood and to understand it.

You need some context and that’s what I hope to give you today, because I think it represents a philosophy of web development that deserves our attention. I’ve been at Basecamp for 10 and a half years now, which is a small eternity in Tucker’s and being at the same place for a decade, has been really interesting. I’ve had the opportunity to go deep on a lot of interesting problems and see the effects play out over many years every once in a while.

I think he can help to take a step back in and look at where you’re going and where you’ve been, and things were really different. When I started, do you guys remember what web development was like before rails? The only way to make real software was with j2ee. I found this this diagram of 2004 era, best practices. This is j2ee, it’s beautiful in its simplicity, really and then, of course, on the other end of the spectrum you at PHP but rails came along and changed all of this for the j2ee developers it throughout all that ceremony and had said hey look.

This can be a lot simpler and for the PHP folks, it said here’s some structure that makes sense and it helps you avoid. Writing the same thing over and over again in slightly different ways, and I think in some ways this period was the golden age of wealth development. If you ignore the browser situation at the time, because we could embrace the statelessness of HTTP and we could deliver a fully rendered UI on each request in response cycle, so this is the full request response cycle.

I think it’s one of the best one of the best features of rails and then web apps got more ambitious. We weren’t happy with the performance of the UI built on full page loads, so we started building single page apps and instead of each request returning a full HTML response. Now he started booting the app with an empty page and the page had some JavaScript others JavaScript made JSON API requests, so we made the server-side accept and return JSON and we moved the traditional responsibilities of rendering the UI completely into the client, and everybody agrees.

This is a good idea right: we’ve got rails 5 with rails API and you need an API anyway in your application. So why not consume it yourself plus. We want a decoupled presentation from data and decoupling is good right, but eventually we weren’t happy with the performance of client-side NEC, so we introduced a virtual Dom to minimize the number of Dom operations we make, which is a great idea. The DOM is slow.

So we should make as few changes to the Dom as possible, but you know what all that javascript and all those API requests really make. The initial page load take a long time and all the content on the page is inaccessible to search engines. So we decided to get rid of the bhoot page and render HTML instead, which means now we need a JavaScript runtime on the server. We need to make our client-side code run on both sides and we need the virtual Dom there too, because we don’t have a real table and now we’ve come full-circle and we’ve reinvented what we had in 2004.

But the complexity is increased exponentially and we’ve introduced literally hundreds of new dependencies to our applications, and the whole system is now too much for any single person to reasonably keep in their head at once. You need entire teams dedicated to managing these subsystems, which honestly is not a surprise. How many of you are familiar with Conway’s law. Conway’s law says that the structure of a software system necessarily mirrors the structure of the organization that created it and these client-side patterns and frameworks that were using now he came from Google and Facebook, which are huge companies with thousands of developers across dozens of teams.

Well guess what your team probably doesn’t, have the same problems as Google in facebook. So how did we get to this point? Well, we were chasing performance and each one of these changes that I went over makes sense incrementally each one made sense at the time. But looking back with into the compound effects, we traded small performance benefits for a massive regression in developer ergonomics and the further we go down the rabbit hole, the more we constrain our future choices and in 2016.

This only tells part of the picture, because you need it native apps on Android and iOS too. So you can multiply the complexity on that slide by three and you’ll be reimplemented each one of your app screens, natively, of course, because you want the best performance. So you’re going to have to multiply your headcount by three well fuck that, but if we accept that we need performant web and mobile apps, how do we reconcile this complexity with the rails philosophy, which says you know, we want to empower small teams to do big Things well what if I told you it didn’t, have to be so complex that we could return to the golden era of the request and full response model to rendering HTML views from rails without an intermediate API layer, and then we could use those same HTML view Ease as a baseline for your iOS and Android apps in a way that still feels native, this is what turbo links 5 gives you all right.

It turns your traditional web application into a single page app at a high level. It intercepts link clicks on your page and it turns them into e Jack’s requests. Your server renders a full HTML response and turbo links loads. That response pulls out the head, merges it in with the current pages head, pulls out the body and outright replaces it and, from the server’s perspective, nothing changes, but the client adopts the single process model, which means that it doesn’t incur the expense of reloading and reprocessing Assets on each page, Jewish or reestablishing WebSocket connections, which are very expensive, and this gives you a significant performance boost.

So how significant this is a side-by-side comparison. We recorded last night on the hotel Wi-Fi so this turbolinks on the left and a full page load on the right whoops. I’r sorry did you guys see it. So this is what we call good enough performance if you can transition from a click to the next screen in about 300 milliseconds you’re going to perceive it as instantaneous. Anything longer feels slow, but anything shorter is nearly imperceptible for full page changes, but chasing that kind of performance requires an inordinate amount of effort and resources.

So here’s my highly scientific graph, but I think it’s I think it’s mostly accurate right. We know from experience that it takes a lot of work to get on the left side of that graph, but 300 milliseconds, actually getting your rails request to complete and say 100 milliseconds is totally achievable and there’s a wide array of tools and strategies to help you Get there like Russian doll, caching, etags, lazy, loading content after the page loads and all that’s for a different talk.

But the point I want to make here is in most cases getting faster than 300 milliseconds just doesn’t matter, and what you gain with turbolinks approach is a dramatically simpler model. If you understand this line of code, you understand the core: their beliefs concept, it’s understandable, because it’s just HTML HTML is easy to generate from rails. It’s easy to cache designers already know how to work with it.

They can work directly with your views. Instead of making Photoshop comps or instead of waiting on an API team to expose the data that they need and when you combine this approach with responsive design techniques, your design team can create a single set of views that power desktop web mobile web and hybrid native Apps – and this is incredibly powerful and mr. Birling spy – we made it incredibly easy.

We’ve created these iOS and Android frameworks that let you build native, hybrid apps, around Herter, building, spud and they’re, designed for what we call the hybrid sweet spot, which means that in your native app your view, content is mostly HTML, but the surrounding navigation controls are native And when you want to go fully native, you can do so on a per URL basis. You get to decide and you get all the performance benefits of turbo like turbo links in your hybrid app, but it’s even more efficient, because in a native app we use a single shared web view that we automatically move around from screen to screen.

So not only do you avoid reloading assets, reestablishing WebSocket connections and so on on every page change you also lose use less memory and, by the way, a native animation transition from one view, controller to another is about 350 milliseconds. So I’d like to show you how easy it is to build my OS app using turbo links, so I’m going to do that live, but actually it’s not really live they’re recording articles! No, but it’s not edited so right.

This is base camp 3. It’s running on my development machine, so it’s not as fast as it would be in production, but I’m just going to click around for a bit. You’ll see turbo links in action here and, as I mentioned before, we use we have fully responsive views in base game 3. So when I resize the window, you’ll see what eventually becomes a phone you and this lets us share all of our views across all of our platforms.

Alright, so now, let’s open, Xcode and we’ll create a new project. Sorry I need some music. Okay, we’re going to take everything out of this file, I’m going to start with a totally bare-bones iOS app. The only thing will happen here is the application did finish. Lodging callback alright, so we’re going to set it up as a UI navigation controller app and for those of you who aren’t familiar with iOS building, iOS, apps and UI navigation controller is basically the stack of views that you are probably familiar with from any iOS app Right, I’m going to create one and assign it to the Windows, room controller and I’m going to build and run the app just to make sure that it works.

It’s not going to look like much of anything there. It is alright, so I need to change the setting now and that’s because iOS 9 ships with a feature called application Transport Security – and this is a setting that’s on by default and it prevents you from accessing any non HTTP websites, basically so for development. We want to flip that off so I’ll just run this command and do that and obviously you don’t want that in production and now I’m going to go and just drop the turbo links framework in the app and in a real app you’re, probably going to want To use cocoapods or Carthage or some other package manager to get turbo links in there, but for now this is the simplest way and finally I’ll import the turbo links framework, okay and we’ll compile and run ok, it still works.

No we’re going to point turbolinks to our web application and so to do that. We’re going to create a session and the session is a turbo, is session, comes from the turbo links framework and it works streets. Moving that webview around from controller to controller we’re going to define a function called visit, it accepts the URL and what this is going to do is create a view controller. It’s going to push it on to the navigation controller stack and it’s going to tell turbolinks to visit, which means a little bit webpage and now we’re going to need to make an initial visit.

When we start the app right, it’s got to load something to begin with, so I’m going to grab the Basecamp development URL and we’ll visit that all right now moment of truth. There we go, you can see. We have native controls around the webview, but now tapping on a link doesn’t do anything and that’s because we need to handle visit proposal. So, in order to do that, we need to set ourselves as the turbolinks session delegate and then we need to implement a method, and this method just tells the application.

What to do when turbolinks receives a link. Click event. So we’re going to implement that method now session did propose a visit to URL and we’re just going to tell it to call our visit method that we already wrote and we’re going to compile and run, but we forgot sin to implement our error handling method. This is very important to implement, but I’m just going to step it out for now and let’s try tapping a link.

Oh there, it is, and so we had a native transition. We have two actual native view. Controllers looks and behaves like a real iOS app, but the content of the view controller is rendered as HTML. You can see it’s very fast, navigating backwards. You can even perform the interactive pop gesture here, so you’re seeing the webview on front and a screenshot in the back. I mean the energy all about for you, you get pulled to refresh, but you can see that this doesn’t quite look like.

We really wanted to right. We’ve got all that administrative debris left over from the web app, but we want native navigation and so what we do at Basecamp is we check we check for a custom user agent in the web app and we use that to selectively disable some UI elements, and It’s very easy to do so. I’r just going to go and import the WebKit framework here and make a change the way I create this session, I’m going to create a configuration, object, assign this property pass it to the.

What to the session initializer and now we’ll run the app, and now you can see it’s looking more native, we’ve lost the navigation bar at the top, some some buttons when I now, when I navigate through some of these news, look like they could be real table View controllers but of course we’re doing this with much less effort, and so this is the core of our strategy right. I just built a fully functioning iOS, app wrapper for Basecamp in under 10 minutes and as native navigation, and I think the most impressive part of this is that I have full coverage of the app all 200 plus screens are accessible from this wrapper in 30.

Lines of code and when we roll out a new feature in the web app in many cases, we don’t have to make any changes to the native apps and we don’t need to wait on App Store approval, because when we make a hybrid app with turbolinks, we’re Essentially, making a custom browser, we get baseline coverage for all the apps functionality and we can progressively enhance the native controls surrounding the webview right.

This is how the web is built. It’s progressive enhancement now we’re extending that from the browser to native apps and what that means is. We can spend our time building high fidelity UI, where it its most valuable. Instead of going through the groundwork of recreating each screen natively on every platform, we can even go fully native on a per screen basis, and this is what we do in the in the official Basecamp iOS app.

It has a native home screen. So I’ll show you here, instead of taking you directly to the activity page, we have a native jumping-off point, and this is just using API requests to populate the table view. But as soon as you click something then you’re taken into a turbolinks web view, everything precedes from there, you can see. Also we have native navigation controls in the title bar we’ve implemented.

We extract some metadata from the page in order to generate this title. We have custom navigation buttons, so all this is native what the actual application is in HTML very fast. We even support 3d touch using turbolinks. So, yes, you can do all those things that you expect and we have native menus and again we extract this content from metadata on the page. It’s very easy to do so. That’s a look at what turbolinks 5 gives you new rails 5 projects.

Have it enabled by default it’s also now available on npm as a standalone, javascript library. So if you’re not me using the asset pipeline – and you want to use it, it’s available to you there and it has no dependencies and it’s not for real, not just for rails apps anymore, it’s open to everyone. We have all new documentation on the github project. Page which we’re very proud of the ios and android adapters are exhaustively documented as well, and so, if any of this speaks to you, I encourage you to check it out and there’s.

One final note I want to make before I go. It’s important to note that turbolinks is not about avoiding having to write any JavaScript. Ok, your application will need JavaScript. Nor is it about having to avoid learning native development. Any more than active record is about avoiding how to write sequel, you’re still going to have to know how to do these things, but what turbolinks does is it gives you a baseline for good performance with minimal effort which lets you spend your time.

Choosing what to optimize and of going all-in and recreating everything from scratch? That’s if you, if you take home one point from this talk, that’s what I hope it is choose what you optimize. Thank you for coming. The question is: why is it so-called turbolinks if we rewrote it the so we we decided to call it turbolinks five, because the core idea is still the same, but it’s a pretty massive shift and we wanted to sync the version numbers up with rails five.

I believe your question is: is this compatible with jQuery UJS techniques? Yes, it is this only. This only intercepts link clicks that would otherwise fall through to the browser as standard navigation. The question was: does this support offline applications and turbolinks does not have support for offline, but this should be possible to build with service workers on top of turbolinks. The question was, could you do this in Ruby motion and, yes, you could? You could probably also do it in reacts native, because the turbolinks webview is just a standard cocoa component.

So you can. You can work a straight it with anything that they can talk. Cocoa question was: does the webview wrap wk webview? Yes, it does inspectable. You can go in through Safari and inspect the web application as you’re developing it, whether the whether you have a phone connected to your computer or whether you’re running in the simulator, and you get all the performance benefits of WK webview.

So you get the the full JIT JavaScript engine question is: do you still need to write, jQuery load event, handlers and you need to you need to re-architect your the way you initialize JavaScript on the page. So we provide a series of events. There’s a turbolinks load event that fires on every page change and then in their inner documentation. We have some further recommendations for how to approach that.

But what I really recommend is using mutation, observer or custom elements. These are html5 api’s and they give you callbacks for when elements are attached and detached from the Dom and if you use, if you use these api’s to install and remove JavaScript behavior, it will work transparently, whether you’re using turbo links or not. And I think it’s a much better approach question is there? Is there an API for rendering just a section of the page rather than the whole page, and there was a version of turbolinks called version 3, which is in development for about a year in half and never officially shipped, and it had a feature called partial page Updates and it’s expanded, the turbo links API in you know in a way that didn’t seem proportional to the amount of value it provided, and I also just think partial page updates in many ways are orthogonal to the navigation.

So my recommendation for now is to use an sjr technique so just a create or like a jst RB response and combined with a UJS remote link to update parts of the pages as necessary, as well as for handling form submissions and stuff like that. But in the future we might explore adding official personal page updates API yeah. The question was, if I can summarize, if you’re rendering hundreds of partials in a single response disturb the links handled that well and the answer is it’s going to handle it as well as the browser would really, if you’re, if you were sending that over a full Response but my suggestion would be one don’t return, so many results at a time, use it in imagination and their techniques like that to to load content and on demand, and two would be to consider writing that in client-side MVC.

It’s it’s totally fine to do that, and we do that in a lot of places. I think the difference is doing that in a component based way versus saying you’re, going to write your entire application. That way, right it’s much easier to to optimize something by just looking at it as a component than it is to throw everything out and write the whole thing twice on both sides. A question was: what’s the upgrade path like from older version of turbolinks, and now we don’t.

We don’t have a good guide for that right now. Some of the all of the event names have changed and there are some some events that went away but we’ll be documenting that before the final rails, 5 release. Yes, any plans to support Windows Phone. I don’t have any plans, but if someone wants to look into that, you can take a look at the way we built the iOS and Android adapters. So there’s a JavaScript component, that’s bundled with each one that basically communicates with the webview over a bridge.

So you could take the same approach on other platforms. We’d love to see that happen. The question was, can you can you use turbo links to access, GPS, camera and so on? And the answer is yes, of course, because you’re you’re still writing a native app okay. If you want to get that over the the webview you’ll have to use a bridge, the bridge, that’s provided by the operating system, but it’s it’s really worth orthogonal to the turbo links.

You would build the native UI yourself and then you would use the platform specific webview rich to get that into your application. If you wanted – or you could consider – using, for example and JSON API – to communicate with your application. If it’s simpler, all of those things are possible. The question was: if you want to access sequel Lite, how would you do that from a web page, local sequel, Lite? You would do that over the JavaScript bridge, that’s provided by the operating system.

So it’s in that way, it’s not any different than using a normal web view. Question was: how does a out of the native adapters handle request, failures and they’re they’re? All of all request failures go through a single method handler, so you choose how to implement that. In your application, my recommendation is to show a native view that gives you basically a reload button or retry button. That’s what we do in Basecamp all right.

Thank you. So much for coming!

Covering Global Issues – Ideas, Style and Smart Living with Summit Magazine

I am your host Ryan Salter, I’m an energy attorney, clean energy advocate and community outreach specialist, i’m also the principal attorney of imagined power. Llc got some exciting stuff. Today, we always say here on the show that it’s important to engage all stakeholders in the energy conversation, including those who may not be traditionally engaged in energy policy.

I think this prominently includes our communicators reporters and storytellers as it they you keep the public informed, engaged and educated about arts, culture, news and current events. So it’s not often these days that you come across a print magazine that just blows you away with its beauty, style and content, but that is what happens to me when I came across this month. Edition of summit magazine summit is Hawaii’s global magazine with in-depth coverage.

Art design style, business, civics and literature in the Hawaiian who’s beer summit connects Islanders and global travelers to the very best perspective, purveyors and products of the archipelago. I has between here today, akaike Hussey, the publisher and editor of summit magazine with us here in the studio today, so it kind of resides in co-ed and as a longtime leader in the community in a wide variety of areas he’s on the board of the domestic Violence, Action Center and the Hawaii Alliance for progressive action, just innings, you akaike, is a teacher author and thought leader with in his word.

The common goal of strengthening our Island home akaike earned a master’s degree in political science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is currently studying economics via the university of london and the London School of Economics. So, with all of that said, welcome ipega. Thank you. Riah so summit magazine, I think, is just it’s just gorgeous. I just you know I hadn’t come across it before and I was just so blown away by the 50 intriguing content, the the beautiful pictures, fashion style and yet still this really deeply intellectually engaging approach.

Global approach, so I’m just so excited to have you here to talk a bit about the magazine. Thank you, but first before we do, maybe you could tell me a little bit about yourself and your background and how you came to become a magazine, publisher sure. Well, I came to media from pro very unconventional path. I I came to it as as a person who had to offer up and talk to the media about things that are happening in the grassroots community, and so I come out of sort of an organizer community activism background fantastic.

What kind of wood that McGee renew a lot of our engaging with the news with what type of stuff for you? After a lot of things in the native blind community self-determination, sovereignty, demilitarization, land rights convention right things? And it was often by my job within our various hui tou to be the person who would go and talk to the press. I would read the press releases. I prayed the flyers and do that kind of thing, and what I realized was our press.

Our our media have an incredibly important responsibility and a lot of power and and it could be used, it could be used for incredibly wonderful things. My concern is, you know when I first started comin in the Hawaii independent was: was that oftentimes Native Hawaiians retreated sort of the problem? You know the wireless guys by those Hawaiian protesting, and the fact that we were protesting was was the problem, as opposed to the issue that we were protesting about being the problem.

So I wanted to flip the lens a little bit and to speak from speak about the world from a Hawaiian perspective instead of having media that just covers Hawaiian. So I want to tell a big different kind of story and then what was available in the in the media of the time wow that is so interesting sort of whatever you say. So the problem was speaking out. You know if only they would be quiet and not talk about these things, and so you were like let’s go ahead and and talk about these things.

Authentically is what I’m hearing right: ships, who’s speaking and shift a speaking and so a couple years ago. I was thinking about a lot about how do we how to create something? That’s really powerful and wonderful. Coming on Hawaii, I wanted to speak to a more global audience from a whole trigger a distinctly hawaii and hawaiian point of view, and it’s always been rattling around. In my my mind, this is quote from queen kapiolani, who was the spouse of David Clarke.

All of the last king of Hawaii – and it was during a time when Hawaii was very much a global place. It was much more cosmopolitan and had a very kind of modernist perspective and orientation, much more so than it than it did in the 20th century and her model. Kapila news model was coolio canoe, which means drive for the summit and try to achieve the very best that we can as an island community. And I think that the neat idea, and so what my goal with this particular publication, is to to try to elevate expectations.

For what Hawaii can be in this 21st century, to showcase the amazing people who are doing great things and media, like my pink tech or in fashion or in culinary arts, and a show that we really have a lot to offer the world? And so that’s about. Sixty seventy percent of the magazine and the other thirty forty percent is kind of straight up: international politics and business. So we cover big ideas that are driving the world right now, like the idea of universal basic basic income, which there comes from about later so, which is which is so interesting yeah.

I hope you know I well. I think it’s interesting, I think folks, reading low as well. So how does I’m curious? So how did you go from? You know the you know, writing the press releases. The sort of you know having this. You know international. You know magazine. Well, you know. Thankfully, we live in a time when a lot of the effort that it you should take to create on publication has been. It was blocked, easier, wordpress and Amazon Web Services and all of the a kind of readily available technology that the Internet has offered to us.

I started doing websites when I was like 17 or 18 years old in high school, and it was very much for him tinkering around and creating a pretty really simple website, so I launched an online news website called the whole independent in 09. Okay, I can remember just because my daughter was born right as I launched it, and I have this crazy habit of starting differences when carried I so you know it was relatively easy to get that off the ground just because with technology you know you must have Good enough to print and hire a truck to deliver yeah physical newspapers that make sense that yet at the same time, I think it must have also been you know your works at the knowledge and roots in the community.

You must have known a lot of artists because you can have all the trucks to drive and fancy print things in the world and not have sort of photographs of of the beauty that you have, and you know the richness of content so well. Some of the degrees, an art and a science summit really is a team effort. I play a. I would be a pretty minimal role in the actual creation of this. This thing that you have in your hands on the table.

We have an excellent art director and excellent in a managing editor, who really make them anything happen and copy editors and writers. Who, who put you, know wonderful thought into their words. I just help with, like. I literally drive amazing around people and try to set up the revenue so that it can keep going well, I’m always in a very important function, the audience for something who’s the audience.

So we have our core demo it’s sort of 35 to 45 year old. So, like you know me it dollars users when you create something for someone that you you know well, I happen to be right in the middle of that that demo ravi speaking mr. Department of mass affluent. So not quite though one percent – but you know, people who are professionals their business owners, they’re, deeply engaged in the life and our civic life.

They they made themselves have significant assets. We and we certainly have a lot of readers with with poor, very affluent, like I want to be in this integr attic me too, and so that that’s probably the age and income distribution and then geographically, we’re writing for an audience. That’s here, but also an international audience, so we have readers in Japan, their readers. We have read adult route: north america – I have a subscriber in slovenia that I need to send a get into, and you know so that’s where it it’s ironic now that i’m printing of physical magazine to get them with the deal the logistics of moving this.

You know 200 pages mmm paper around the globe while trying to trying, as best we can to mitigate the carbon impact, which we should talk about. Of course. But and that’s you know, that’s sort of a always an issue in hawaii shipping and you know absolutely and wanting to you know whole pages and local things and try to somehow still meeting to I’d like to say in carbon impact. Nava standing. But you know come things coming from this direction to the mainland, I mean that we want to increase that.

I think, especially cultural and intellectual part of our our orientation is that that this is our main lab like this is this is the center of our world, and so from this this particular locus. Oh, we can then speak about what’s happening in Asia and North America. South America, from Vermont prospectus you’re in my way, and it’s a very different way of thinking about the world. On the other hand, I can, from a lot of media, that’s produced, for instance in New York City, and I’m always struck by how writers in New York City assume that everyone knows York City.

They talk about the geography New York City edge of is that the daily commute of everyone in a spot. Of course. No, of course it’s not, so I don’t feel bad about interesting that our point of view should be from Hawaii but and at the least, it’s a very interesting way of a female world, it’s different, which is what you’re creating a product. Nowadays, it’s all about being different but creates, have been differentiated from everything else is out there.

Well, I I would agree that sounds like good advice in chronic Creator, so why don’t we go ahead and talk a little bit about how the magazines structured and when why? So you know I know they’re. There may be some variation, but I know this: we have lifestyle, arts, industry, common teaching for tomorrow, so you know how you sort of put this together. I’r sure you know that illuminates those perspectives.

So why did you decide to sort of place the magazine up in this way? Well, so the the first section is called annoy doing and honor a new england’s rainbow in Hawaiian, and so our magazine does not have a Hawaiian name right its summit. So I thought we have one section in the magazine has a Hawaiian in that would be okay and I figure on balance. People around the world probably have seen the word on Lulu at some point.

If it comes to Hawaii, they probably seen other people or sports fans know that that’s supposed to be our our sports team at university. So that’s our life attention and we think of it as the place where you go for information about where to eat. Where to what to make with your alcohol collection at home? Oh you know we’re about take break okay and then, when we come back, we’ll talk more about the structure of the magazine start digging into some of the content, so we’ll be right back with each Idaho’s.

Be talking about some at 90 day and in just a bit Aloha. This is kayley giacchino with the weekly a hanukkah co. Let’s work together program on the state, a kawaii broadcast network mondays at two o’clock p.M. Movers and shakers and great ideas join us. We’ll see you then Aloha Aloha, I’m Callie, Lucas coast of Hawaii – is my mainland here on think too kawaii every friday at 3pm. We address issues and importance for those of us who live here on the most isolated landmass on the planet.

Please come join me fridays. At 3pm Mahalo Aloha, my name is John ye and I actually had a small part to do with what’s happening today, served actually in public office. But if you don’t already know that is the chance to learn more about what’s happening in our state. By joining me. For talk story with John, why he every other Monday, thank you, and I look forward to your seeing us in the future hi and welcome back to power of Hawaii, where Hawaii comes together to talk about a clean, renewable and just energy future.

We’re here with I. I caca who see of some publisher of summit magazine, and we were just talking about the different sections with a magazine and actually they can reach the magazine at wwe.Com correct. So let’s go ahead and continue our discussion about magazines, okay, so real briefly, the protection of Unknowing you language is the lifestyle. The second section is originals, which is art, artists, primarily musicians, and it’s bouquet features on folks will create culture.

Industry is the third section. I hope I’m get in order right. That’s like business features. Commons is the fourth section, and that is essentially international politics, politics and social issues and in letters it’s the final section and that’s. I think it is a sort of our new yorker moment where we get to do poetry and prose, and then we also have a summit shop where we work with producers here makers who are creating wonderful products and we help it sell their product Ellis.

Well, that’s that’s fantastic! I just again, I think it’s really important to talk to folks who are purveyors of perspectives and cultures, because if energy policy folks don’t sort of engage with the you know the thought, leaders and let us, but you guys know that what you do is important to Us then you know: how can we expect you to come to us and talk about how what you do is you know about? We do can be important to you, of course you know and why everyone knows.

You’ve got a hundred percent renewable energy goal and I know there’s a great piece this month that folks might be interested in about on solar, hot water heaters and the need to sort of think of them as being cooler and sexier. Then we may usually think about them, because they are a real solution and something that can be an answer and in a way also for low to moderate income folks to participate in energy.

So thank you for covering measure, and I should mention that it’s a piece that we did on shipping energy, that in partnership with yes with energy failure, which it’s on a great work. Yet in really pushing the you know pushing innovation Ford, which we desperately need. Yes, absolutely um, so I’d also like to talk about a couple of the other articles that I found to be just so fascinating, so one of them is called mana for the people and it sort of it’s a historical book back at the Polynesian Panther movement.

Could you talk a little bit about that? First of all, sort of how did you come across this topic and why did you decide the you know to go ahead and bring that forth and some it sure? So it’s a story that was processed by one of our contributing writers based on Australia, and you know I’m as a student myself of a social lumen. Lava has been fascinated with how social moods are adapted and kind of spread all throughout the world.

So one of those obviously people Black Panther movement and so what we. What we found in healing is is a very local, New Zealand, Mallory and tan Polynesian. An effort to take some of the energy and language and sort of intellectualism of the Black Panther movement and turn it into a Polynesian movement in in on table of New Zealand, and I should mention too that there’s you know they’re also similar things happening here in Hawaii, during the same time, period where you know folks were following what was going on all around the world and and building social movements that that copied either the effects of things like the Black Panther movement and also a lot of the substance.

A lot of the honor, the thinking behind you know what what was going on in, like Oakland, for instance. Why do you think that that particular is black, American and Caribbean cultural message resonated amongst folks in the it’s a good question? I think you can make an argument and I’ll just say I’ll, make the argument that the black culture in North America and the Caribbean has has really been a the most creative Wellspring of culture.

For for, like our modern age. And if you look at all of the cool stuff, that’s come out of come out of the United States, rated if jazz the blue, it’s hip-hop, it’s rap. You know all the things that have come out of out of black culture and that’s me I find it very inspiring because it’s really about a group of people who you know history should have could have written him off. You know and that group of people taking things that were forced on them and then turning it into the the tools of their own liberation.

It’s really a beautiful I’m sort of getting emotional. It’s a very beautiful. You know his historical trend. That happened. That’s very beautiful thing and is the siege of that sort of wealth, framing it it’s as culture and also the social movements and the social activism and the stories of oppression. I guess helped create this diaspora of of resistance right. I don’t know what to call it, but there’s something that was it music.

Was it the afros something resonated you know and for heiping perhaps still resonates today, something you know if you know when you look at the pictures and I’m sorry I don’t have them to share you know it’s sort of a it seemed like such a natural overlay. You know you hear about this person, you know in New Zealand, picking up, you know, Huey Newton’s work and you know you know, wearing a beret and putting on a jacket, and it just sort of you know that the overlay is almost kind of seamless and what They decided to do in terms of helping young people with homework, and you know having at you working with after school, like was also very similar to seeing kind of scene.

We are trying to get it. What kind of I think part of? What’s going on in that particular in a particular episode they were describing is: is that we all you know everyone in for the english-speaking modern world. We also to live in one culture right and it’s a culture that is broadcast out through Hollywood and and and so everyone sort of share in what’s happening to this math English language, culture and as a result of that, the cultural minorities, even you know, in Hawaii Native Hawaiians are our minority of sorts in all table of New Zealand, even though there are some large percentage of the population under the exact number, but Maori are still treated as a minority in that community in that in that country.

What you have, then, is this situation where you have this kind of monolithic, English, language, culture and within that model of the culture black culture is it’s sort of the other, but it’s a very powerful other. It’s just an incredibly vibrant and and powerful and creative space. Where r alliteration can take place, and so I think when that culture touches places like New Zealand or Hawaii, it becomes a place for all the folks who don’t get to be.

You know the white man at the table we all get to play with in the black culture, because it’s so accepting and we can all find a void. There, take a look at in Hawaii. You have like the the movement – I think of God, like John John Prante, know, who’s leading the 808. The 808 girls furminator way. Excuse me, the Irving, a delayed group and they’re working with kids, who are using sort of the visual language of hip-hop, the visual language of street art of aerosol art to to tell their own story, because that is an available medium.

You know they can’t find a space in the light dominating culture, for the black culture is actually a an accepting place. I still interesting in the and the article talks about how did you know in this Polynesian, Panther movie movement in the seventies it began to become a app and polynesian pan-pacific. You know sort of diaspora sort of a movement to unify the Diaspora and reached out to you know, movements in South Africa, and so yes, I mean and that we are all applicant and one regarder another.

Originally, that’s that and I was going to ask – and you know I know so you this is in the current issue. So what isn’t? How do you think you know this topic is important today? Well, just pop my head, we live in incredibly interesting time. Right yeah. We do I’ll be there. It’s sort of amazing unbelievable that it’s been a month barely a month since the newly Trump aaron has taken place. But it’s a time where so many social limits are in communication, with each other able to find more and love and solidarity with each other code access pipeline 17.

Well back when we got ya, you know look at things like the the women’s for women’s bar yeah yeah on Inauguration Day. What was amazing about that for me was just how incredibly rich and multi multi everything those margins were so much more than like. The official inaugural events and the sort of kind of monoculture that you see in those in the Trump phenomenon you know what’s happening with the people is the people are getting together, and we need to celebrate that all these moon, all these people, that that coalescing is An incredibly powerful historical trend that I don’t think we’ll ever stop.

You know it’s in some ways: it’s an unraveling of of the way in which people have been divided last 500 years. Okay, it’s so interesting, I feel like we could have a whole show about that. In terms of what’s coming together and what some of the some of the challenges and the fissures some for very reason – and you talk about energy wave yeah well, I like that. What I wanted to get to I could talk about that.

We don’t have a lot of time, that’s what I really wanted to get to. Is this interesting article or you interviewed and economist who has an idea? This is the name of the actual name of the owner, described as universal basic, universal, debut accountant. So, basically, this concept that there can be a situation where everyone gets a taste income-based income and what that? What that means, in terms of you know in terms of fighting economic development and particularly for the poor, so tell us a little bit about why about this and why you chose protocol it your local bakery in communist.

Oh, thank you, be. I felt like yeah something you get. You don’t want to talk about yeah, but so the idea that we’re moving to an economy with less enough people where you don’t actually need people to do to the logical appropriation, ization yeah right. So the edges, you create a tax regime that would that would take all of the benefits of this in credit increase in the cumulus economy and then share that benefit with the people, so that people can still get some still get some value from that later.

With drug and gosh I, this is my fault for lingering, but we’re not going to have as much time to dig into that fascinating Barry, as I had hoped I would, but is how can people find summat magazine so summit, is on learn about 400 stores across United cason at most barnes nobles, you can find a copy of summit. You can also find a bit before seasons or or the lotus honolulu to find us at whole foods all throughout the states and department, with your own wan na, have the copy and maybe at a doctor’s office or a lawyer’s office to you know we’re all over The place or you go to summon team comm service, alright, well, fantastic.

Thank you so very much for sharing about this magazine and some of your fascinating perspective. Thank you so much for that baby and that wraps up another issue or another edition of power of Hawaii. I’r why assaulter energy attorney and clean energy advocates community outreach specialist. Thank you so much Mahalo and aloha. You

How To Market Your Restaurant on Social Media in 2020 |Food Business/Restaurant Marketing Strategies

Today we’re going to be going over the four Ways to market your restaurant on social media in 2020, So many of you guys have already been on that Social media train. So congratulations to that because a lot of people actually don’t See the value Just in the last two three years: people Don’t see the value on posting on social media because there’s no direct ROI, There is no direct association with you putting In a dollar on ads You putting a dollar on investing in your Brand on social media and how much you get back, You don’t know, which is the reason why a Lot of people don’t do that, but today people are waking up.

People understand the importance of social Media, That’s the reason why people are spending Thousands of dollars hiring social media people to take pictures for them to write captions To interact with their customers, But in today’s now age this is just not enough. It is not enough just to post nice pictures. It is not enough to just engage because the Market is so saturated. The platforms like Facebook Instagram they Are so saturated with beautiful pictures, You need the right strategies to actually Stand up and aside from the crowd, which is the reason why I want to be sharing with you.

The four different ways to market through social media for your restaurant and they’re Coming right up, The number one way to market on social media Is to use ads Now I’m 100 % against using ads. If you are Not aware, and if you don’t understand objectives and if you do not have already a solid base, And foundation for your business, However, if you already have a solid foundation, If you already have, people who are interacting with your brand, then running ads is a must Running ads on Facebook and Instagram is still Relatively cheap, as opposed to the native and the like print ads bus ads and article Ads and stuff like that, And on top of that running ads on social Media like Facebook and Instagram is super super effective.

When you can combine that With a right strategy, So, for example, when we’re running ads, we’re Not running ads just to sell people on Hey know what Come to my restaurant 20 % off. No, we don’t want to do that. We want to be able to run ads strategically. To show people that Hey, you know what This is the behind the scenes process of how We make our food, This is the type of food that we offer. This is the type of people that we serve.

This is how they feel about our food after They come and consume at our restaurant. This is behind the scenes. This is how everything is made And then, when the timing is right, when you Want to promote a certain campaign, you would want to then offer them something in return. You’d tell them that you know what there’s 10 % off Or Hey, you know what Come during this weekend for this specific Promotion So, at the end of the day, running promotions, Is very, very strategic: You cannot just send them an offer and expect Your customers to return right away.

You need to be able to warm them up. You need to show them behind the scenes. You Need to be able to tell them a story, You need to be able to show them behind the Scenes of how you are working So at the end of the day when the timing Is right, you’re going to become top of mind for your customers And another powerful thing and another powerful Way of running ads is to retarget What that means, and that’s actually, where The true power is when you’re running ads is when you can retarget people And what that means is haven’t you ever experienced Something that you know you were wanting to buy a certain item, Let’s say, for example, a jacket You want to buy that jacket.

You click on Add to cart, and at that moment someone calls you and you shut your computer and then you Go out for dinner, something like that And an hour later you come back. You open Up your laptop and you forget about the jacket So yeah you have the intent to buy that jacket. But because of the fact that life takes over, you forgot about it completely And all of a sudden next day you get an email, Reminding you that Hey, you know what You have this jacket in.

Your cart. Just want to remind you that if you want to Check out you get 10 % off something like that. That’s called retargeting, That’s showing up in your inbox showing up In your feed telling you that Hey, you know what You forgot about me, but I’m here That’s the power of running ads And then the same note. You can actually do The same thing with food and beverage as well, So, for example, when people actually interact With your ad they’re, like Hey, you know what I really like this product.

I really like this menu of yours. I really like this recipe of yours, Great stuff And next time, whenever you have a promotion, You show it in front of my face now because of the fact that I love your branding because I already love and want to try out your product, I’m much more inclined to actually come to Your restaurant and try out your stuff And that’s the power of retargeting. That’s a power of being timely with the ads So you’re not just running ads, because everyone else is doing it.

You need to have a strategy. You need to have Objectives and you need to be able to retarget in a timely manner. That’s the number one way to market on social Media for your restaurant in today’s time, The second way to market through social media For your restaurant is through review sites. Yes, review sites are social media as well. Because this is a platform where people can actually search for your restaurant and your Brand Believe it or not more than 80 % of people That go and eat a new place.

They go on review sites like Yelp, like Google reviews all These different review sites and you need to make sure you have a presence on these Different sites, And on top of that, actually I’m going to Throw you another stat. Did you know that a half star rating increase okay accounts? For more than 30 % of increased traffic, And what that means is that, if you have a Three and a half star versus someone that has a four star, and yet you guys serve the Same thing, 30 % of the time people will search and people actually go and prefer the place.

With that half a star more that four star restaurant, they would prefer that and they Would have 30 % more sales than this company and this brand, this restaurant, who has only Three and a half star, which is the reason why you should pay a lot of attention on review. Sites, Okay, A lot of times, you may be wondering: Hey But Wilson I don’t have much reviews or Hey Wilson. You know what my restaurant just Started, I don’t know how to get reviews.

Well, you need to make sure that you strategize On getting reviews, good reviews, bad reviews, it doesn’t matter just honest reviews. Okay, You can always work towards making sure your Product satisfies your customer Now, on the same token, if your product sucks Then it doesn’t matter if your reviews are not because you shouldn’t even be in the restaurant Business, I’m saying this: if you have a good product, That you can actually improve upon that.

You can actually serve to the customer that customers Actually enjoy it Now, some of the ways to get reviews are to Actually, incentivize your customers and incentivize them with, for example, a drink for every Time they come in and show that they have left a review or perhaps having a sign out. Your door that says Hey, please, leave us a review on Yelp or something like that Because a lot of times, if you don’t ask you Shall never receive, which is the reason why you should always always ask Just like how, at the end of the article I’ll Always ask you to smash the like button, because it helps with my YouTube journey and because At the end of the day, if I don’t ask, I will never receive that like button, So please smash that like button, But nonetheless coming back to this incentivize Your customers to leave a review on Yelp Whenever you have it reviewed, make sure you Respond to them and engage with your customers, Whether the review it’d be a troll review.

Where people are just complaining about you because Hey you know what They have bad service, because the guy looks Like he’s always bored at work, but if you’re not that bored and it’s just how you looked And unfortunately, that review is not warranted, then you can reply Hey, you know what And make some put some character into it. Make it fun. For example, you can be like Hey. This is How I look, How dare you Or something along the lines of that Just make it fun with them, Show your character, because people who are Actually, reading these reviews they’re human too, They understand what is a true review and What are the reviews aren’t actually warranted? For example, it is a warranted review that Is a negative one then own up to it own up to it and tell the people that unfortunately, This happened to you, I’m so sorry, Let me make it right to you and actually improve Upon it And people are much more forgiving if you’re Honest and if you own up to it So there you go Review sites, do not take this lightly because It would make or break your business The third way to market on social media for Your restaurant is through influencer marketing And what that means is that influencers are Basically, the cool kids in the class They’re, the people that people look up to They’re the people that are outspoken and They’re, the most popular people They’re like prom Kings and the prom Queens Okay.

So these are the people that you would Want to bring into your restaurant, These are the people that you want to reach. Out to and actually find their profile and offer them to come into your restaurant to Have a free meal to actually you know what Not pressure them into writing a post, not Pressure them to sharing, but more so just to come and experience what you have to offer And if you’re genuine about that and if you’re Not an annoying person about this a lot of times these influencers would be more than Happy to post, on your behalf more than happy to post their experience at your establishment.

And that says a lot about you versus food critics or versus anything else. Influencers are the major players in town And major influence for your restaurant because a lot of times you can actually leverage their Customer base They’re the people that follow them and a Lot of times these influencers they have 10 20 thousand. A hundred thousand subscribers And followers that actually read what they have to post.

So if they had a pleasant experience at your Joint then majority of the time they can influence their following as well And case in point when we first started 720 Sweets, the first day that we opened there was a food blogger who came in and posted About us and the next day three more of her friends came in and tried our ice cream. Our Smoking ice cream and find that this was a pleasant experience.

They actually asked us if they can post for Us and at that time this was five years ago. Okay, At that time, I didn’t know what was influencer Marketing, but I just said that Hey know what I just want to serve you I just want to bring the best dessert to the Market And because of this attitude that we had We were able to actually have them post for us and talk about their experience on social Media And in turn, we became super busy.

The third Day onwards, and within the first year we expanded to three shops all because of influencer Marketing, So this is not something you want to take. Lightly nowadays, this whole industry has transformed, has evolved and has matured Which makes influencer marketing that much more important, So, at the end of the day, if you really want To be able to market, and if you want to be able to bring your brand out to the world, Do not oversee the importance of social media and do not oversee the importance of influencer Marketing And a lot of times this is where they’re going To be able to share through word of mouth as well, When people see your post online, they’re Going to be talking about it with their friends, So if you deliver a positive experience, a Good experience to your consumers, a good experience to your food bloggers and influencers They’re going to talk about it even offline, and that brings a lot of weight through marketing.

For your restaurants, Now I know we talked a lot about influencers. Social media, influencers and stuff like that, However, you did not want to oversee the importance. Of catering to influencers that are offline as well We’re talking about people that are not really On social media, but has a lot of following and it has a lot of networks so, for example, People that are in the real estate game or people who are in the banking industry they Love your product, they come and try it out and they’re like Hey.

You know what I can bring this back to my branch Or real estate agent. Hey know what I really liked this. I want to buy a bunch of this stuff or buy A bunch of gift cards and gift it to my association. These are all things that you do not want. To oversee as well, Even though they’re not on social media, they Too, have a lot of influence; They too hold a lot of weight through word. Of mouth marketing, Nonetheless, if you can actually combine the Effect of social media and influencer marketing with word of mouth marketing that becomes A really strong synergy and a big combo that can help your restaurant market in today’s Age, Fourth and final way to market on social media.

For your restaurant is to be able to build a community. This is something that I personally am an Advocate of Okay, I do not run any ads. I do not run any paid promotions until I can Build a solid base, a foundation of fans that love our product and love our service and Loves us in general, because it is super super important You don’t if, for example, there is no loyalty, There is no way you can demand a premium if people don’t view you as a brand, If they don’t love you, they only treat you Like a commodity And when you are treated as a commodity, how Do people value you They value you by price, So if you’re not the cheapest in town, if Not the cheapest most bang for the buck, then they’re not going to come to you because They view you as a commodity, However, if they view you as a brand that They love, then they’re willing to support your journey and then they’re willing to pay A premium and then they have that loyalty for your brand.

So at the end of the day it doesn’t matter If you have competitors that are open around the block, it doesn’t matter. If you have competitors, That opens right beside you. They’ll still come to you because they want to support your Journey and because they’re, a loyal fan of yours and they’re willing to pay that little Bit of a premium for your product because they’re a loyal fan Now, having said that, how do you build a Loyal fan base A lot of times.

This comes from personal engagement. These are things that are not scalable. These are things that require one on one: interaction, That you need to care for them that you need to show them that you appreciate them. Some simple gestures like that you addressing Them by their first name accumulating fans one by one and knowing your first thousand Fans is so so important for the success of your restaurant Address them by their first name, treat them Something small, So then that way, they feel that, Oh, I’m a Vip Ooh, I kind of like this Ooh, I’m special And in turn slowly, but surely they become Regulars and they become loyal fans of you sharing along your story.

Why is it that you’re building this brand? Why is it that you’re building your restaurant And what are you working on what you’re working towards And if they know a lot more about, you understand, Your journey understand your story, then they’re much more prone to want to support. You on your journey for your restaurant And which is how you can build your loyal Fan base one fan at a time. This is something that is not scalable, but Is essential for your restaurant’s success? Number four is to be able to create that community Of loyal fans And that’s going to make a difference between A failing business and a thriving business, So there you go the four ways to market your Restaurant on social media Number one is to be able to use ads use ads.

With an objective strategize about it, Don’t just run ads with 20 % off, because people Don’t really attach to ads like that, You need to be able to tell them a story. You need to show them the product that you’re serving you need to show them how it’s like To enjoy your product behind the scenes and tell a story before you run an ad to get them. To come in The second way to market your restaurant is Through review sites Review sites like Yelp, Google, all these Different sites Do not take this lightly and create a way An automatic way to be able to attract these reviews because it’s super important, because 80 % of the people that decide on where to eat, checkout review sites Super super important and never looked like That Third way to market your restaurant on social Media is through influencers.

Influencers are the cool kids on the block. These guys are the prom Kings, prom Queens And you want to make sure that you bribed them: Okay, bribe them with a free meal, treat them Exceptionally, well give them a pleasant experience, but ask for nothing in return, because if you Ask for something in return. It would just feel like it’s a stretch. It would just feel not natural. It would feel like it’s a bribe, Bribe them in a way that they don’t feel like They’re being bribed Okay, That’s the art of this And, lastly, number four: create a community Create a community of loyal fans.

So then that Way, you can step out aside from the crowd and not be compared as a commodity, that only Competes through pricing, You want to be able to create a community So then that way you have loyalty and you can demand a premium for your menu and your Goods, Hopefully this has helped you out in building An amazing restaurant. I really hope this has helped you If you guys liked this article, if you guys Find value in this article make sure you smash the like button, because it’s going to help Me out a lot throughout this whole YouTube journey, But if you want even more content, if you Want to know the A to Z, if you want to learn more about how we’re able to build this international Ice cream chain, and so then that way you can have these skillset and these templates That we’ve created for the last 10 years anywhere from negotiating free rent to building My first thousand loyal fans check out in the link below.

My business community, yeah tim jacoby, sorry, I’m saying Mike official Kershner, is director of SEO and content of turn rhythmic capital he’s also the president of a popular SEO. Meetup group, Silicon Valley, yeah about 6,000 miles west of London 6,000 miles west of London.

Is that fair enough? Do you think I don’t know, I just threw it out there. Alright, we’ve got 10 questions tonight. We’ve actually got more than 10, but we’re just getting back into after our three-week high itís getting back into the swing of things all right. Let’s look at the it’s titled: how to select suitable keywords. It’s from cameral Islam and camera says hello, everyone. I need some suggestions running regarding keyword, selection and how to find suitable keywords thanks in advance.

Well, suitable keywords will depend on your business. What what you specifically focus on, where do you spend the time essentially wanting to make money, will kind of determine essentially the type of keywords you’re going to want? It’s pretty broad. I think the question will come down to you know what kind of tool start through you are you looking for. I mean Google, Google, Adwords Keyword, planner, I’m not perfect without a paid search program.

We’ll give you kind of a set of terms that you can understand about. You know a range of what people were searching for online and give you general concepts of that. There are other tools like SEM rush. That will give you a bit more details and you can find kind of areas of which more specific numbers of what people are searching for and yeah assuming you’re. Looking at the search results for them, you can get an understanding of whether or not those terms are appropriate yeah to your business line, but that’s kind of just a quick way to to think about.

You know what term is going to be actually useful to your business. Thank You, Maya anybody else, there’s also ones which are free, which are quite quite useful. This it’s called answer the public. It’s now it depends on what your your main sort of keyword is or product that you’re going to add in to start with depends on what kind of answer you’re going to you know it sort of data you’re going to get from it normally pretty good.

They can normally come up. You know, even if it’s very vague, they can normally come up with a few ideas for you. You can split it down into questions and phrases, things like that and there’s a free tool. It’s it’s it’s pretty helpful and then what you can do is at the same time you can use those and bounce across to to add words to kind of you know, sort of fill you in a little bit more if you wanted to get actual numbers related To that but yeah, that’s that’s quite a you know, good selection to play around with thank you, Tim okay, let’s wrap that up for camera and let’s go to the next this one from SWAT.

Neil tides does web hosting effect the Google ranking of a website. If the web host doesn’t do a good job of actually hosting your site, that can definitely play a part in to affecting how you ain’t good, for example, if it’s not up all the time, if it’s yeah the servers are extremely slow, those are things that can Definitely affect the ranking of your website outside of a few of those things. For the most part, it’s not going to be hugely detrimental if you’re choosing between one kind of web hosting versus another yeah, but just like that still the case it might be fine, but certainly for around about ten years.

Godaddy was notorious for blocking the crawling of Googlebot and, of course, then Google would naturally drop those pages from its index and search most for it. Sir. You know they then turn it back on and, of course, the the owner of the website would not know why. He wasn’t performing all that. Well, it was just them that its performance was heretic but as a server and now, if that’s still the case, anybody fill us in okay, all right.

Let’s move on committed to number three on the run list, it’s from PIM Sandra and it’s team us how many articles should you have to increase organic rankings? 42? No, more, no less yeah! I think there were a few answers. Like my kiss, oh yeah yeah. I think in range from 17 upwards of 40 yeah look, I think, you’re looking at in the wrong way, in the sense that it’s not necessarily about a specific set number of articles.

You know if you’re going to if you’re going to write articles or you’ve got the you know, you’ve got. You know someone there on the team that can, you know, create content or whatever the case may be. I think you should, and it’s always good to to focus on the specific topics within whatever your site is product service whatever and to you know, focus on answer on all the prospective customer, stroked users, potential questions, queries, informational queries around those products or service or whatever The site may be proper, you know interlinking throughout the articles, segmenting it towards.

You, know your proper category and then towards the actual. You know the actual product or service on the site, those particular pages, and even then you know. Let’s just say you know. This is a brand new site. You don’t really have any links pointing to it. You haven’t really built up anything. You know you could talk on a hundred articles and it might you know, dial an evil a little bit. There’s this a lot more to it than just creating articles, but that is a really good way.

You know providing the information to customers or users for when they get there. It’s also a good way of catching them in between the purchasing stroke, research phase. So yeah. Definitely you want to be looking at that, but I think for you to just think I write articles to get this that’s kind of the wrong thinking. You need to understand why you’re going to be creating the content and what you’re intending the content to do.

You know you shouldn’t just be thinking content to rank. You should be thinking, I should be capturing they user or the customer. During that you know their research or their purchasing journey and the more times you start appearing to them, you creating that brand affinity along the way and then trusting what you’re saying you’re answering all the right things. They continually start seeing you for things around that product questions answers you know it doesn’t necessarily have to be also written content.

You know you can think YouTube. You know article may work better depending on what the service or product is and you’re building up, that brand affinity, making it a more more likely for them to use their product or service that their actual site offers, because you’ve built up that trust throughout the research Process that or the console you know the consumer journey that then they’re taking. So you know, yeah do you know, concentrate and invest in in sort of content, but don’t think of it is that how is it going to increase my rankings? Thank you Tim.

I think. We’ve world covered yeah. There was a lot of levity on answering that, because we’ve got to also consider that when we’re answering it is that the user or the person that’s answers the question. I should say that they have no idea whether you know they have no idea how funny yes Jim, but we also need a little bit of fun along the way. Fair enough. Micah was telling us to better, maybe see, helicopter.

If the city saw you in Trafalgar Square hanging on assets, you said the right pocket. I can neither confirm. Nor did I come Brown asked. The question he wants to know can SEO help your business. I wonder if he expected a negative answer from an well. It’s like yeah, it depends with what Tom um it’s like yeah. It really depends look. So if you are some hip trendy, up-and-coming, a fashion label pair of jeans right yeah, you’ve got your site.

You’ve got your products, you know, there’s kind of you know and as long as that, you know, if you had a developer that had the basic understanding of SEO. You know, let’s say for argument’s sake, that the probe that you, you know your site is probably set up. It’s you know it’s properly developed. You know images everything’s taken care of, so you haven’t then had to sort of in a sense, invest in as now and then because you’re, a hip and trendy sort of thing you know like for jeans or whatever your primary focus for the target market.

You think right we’re going to hit YouTube, Facebook and Instagram and do and maybe even tick, tock or whatever right, because it’s hip, it’s trendy, you can do like really cool article kind of stuff. Well that in a sense could probably drive the business for that model. To the the side and to purchase right so that necessarily wouldn’t be a CEO. Yes, they could, you know, help tie it all together, but in the sense you could take that out of this situation right, if you were looking at you know so the for me yeah, it surely can.

But what I’m saying is, it doesn’t always have to be just SEO and it can be portions of it. It can be, you know, part of it that can be as long as you know, all the different cogs work together as they’re intended and all the different pieces are are working. Then you know technically not but of course those other little aspects along the way to incorporate small pieces of SEO in terms of outreach, pushing out your content, making sure it’s found in the right places things like that.

So yes, it can. But I wouldn’t say it’s always an essential element depending on what the businesses. Thank you Tim, fantastic answer. Nobody wants to anything that do they. Okay next is number five. It’s from Joshua Wells, it’s on citations and ender, three listing for national SEO. Joshua said hey. I have a question: do you do citations and directory listings for national SEO, or is that just for local SEO? No, you can’t do it for national.

Also, in the sense that look, it’s still national is still based on an address. So therefore, technically it is still local, but you know if something was just a national company you’re still having to use an address with citation where it still makes a technically local, although it’s the head office, which serves that so national. So it’s a bit of yeah. You know defining that, but essentially yeah you can.

You can still do certainly for a head office or for a corporate brand. You can you can still do it normally, ordinarily, they wouldn’t, but there’s no harm in not you know, I don’t think Mike’s head office in London would go and do you know a handful of citations in Yale, and you know one one, eight or whatever the case May be, but it wouldn’t be a problem if they did so, it’s not going to, you know hinder, but ultimately it still just it still does boil down to two local in that sense, because in this, in the sense of local is with local and citations you’re.

Trying to reinforce online that business that business name at that address locally and that’s what you using these to reinforce it wouldn’t hinder, but it’s not going to be like some make-or-break thing, for you know a head office to to be listed in that excellent. Thank you. Tim well, I think that covers it. If there are no objections, I’ll move on okay number, six on our list is from Scott Clark.

Scott asked a question titled a large number of or often pages in a sitemap Scott said how severe is a lion’s number of often pages in a sitemap found during an audit. I’r assuming this is a cruel budget waster at the very least, but what else it was found on the prospects, not a client site. So I would really have a look at what this page is up, because I know some like like, for example, we commerce, depending on how its set up if a product is out of stock.

It blends that out of stock, it takes another, never get patient and, and they technically become offering pages from a auditing tools perspective, that’s what they kind of label it in, but it’s still, it’s still being. You know treated kind of correctly in that sense, so a large number in that instance wouldn’t be a problem because they come in start. There come out of stock and it makes sense the user to remove it out of the navigation and when it’s out of stock and then winner, the new stock comes in it comes back in so from that perspective, it’s it’s not an issue, but I’m guessing.

If that was when we say a large time, I don’t know what a large number, but you know if we talk in thousands here and they not being treated in that way coming in or going out, then yeah there could be an issue. I would probably look at tidying it up not from a sense of sort of a cruel budget, but I would I would want to tidy it up so that the search engine really understands what you’re doing if these things are just hanging about all over the place.

I would want to tidy it up from that sense if they’re not coming back or it’s just some weird kind of I don’t know. Sometimes you know some of some of them are like sometimes images attached to labels and stuff yeah, there’s all kinds of different different ways. It would appear, but I would say, depending on what they are, would be depending on how I’m trying to clean it up or yeah yeah opt to too long to it to cover here, but you should also look at the dumb SEO questions.

Facebook group there’s a there’s some very useful comments in for this question, all right. Let’s move on to the next and it’s a question from Jeb and John. He asks it’s titled to do. Canonical tags, past, linkjuice and German went on to say and we’re not to ask also. I am stuck with the thought about some about same domain, canonical versus third-party site, canonical tag. How would search spots look and treat them got my fingers crossed on this one.

Thank you guys, so so in a sense, do canonical tags cross, link juice, um! Well, let’s, let’s think about this. Let’s put it this way. If a, if a third party, you know a pretty big third party in the in the instance where someone took your your you know, you sent your content to them. They published it in a new truck. You know you had your version of it and there’s like totally outranked you, which we see all the time in that sense and ultimately, the way they should treat.

That is by putting your the canonical tag. You know treating with canonical to allow google or to at least show the attributing source or whatever the case may be now so in the sense does it pass linkjuice? No, I don’t think in the traditional sense, but it does allow search engines to understand who actually produced it, and I and I think that has a lot of value in it not necessarily link juice, I’m not making sense.

I know what I’m trying to say. I don’t mmm yeah, I think I’m getting where you’re trying to get it’s that if a third party has a canonical to your site, then you know, then that would sort of transfer to your site, yeah. So you’re saying these guys actually wrote it almost as if this is the act. These are the authors. This is you know, I mean we. We know how Google shows these things that can scholarship articles and things like that where they show the citation source they want to attribute, or they want to know who created this, and I think it would so.

I wouldn’t say he purses Authority, but it shows who created it. You know where, where it comes from, so you know if it’s a fairly, you know decent site that that has obviously published it it it’s it’s showing. You know I hate to say, but trust and authority it’s a tributing, trust and authority to you by that canonical tag. Kind of that’s yeah contain this. The way that Google did about indexes and works was dynamic.

The canonical tag would have that value. I guess, but it doesn’t. Google doesn’t work that way now all care, no responsibility. I wouldn’t normally try to say this. I just say these from having readed giggle, but you know taking their set of files and the consequences of a search. So but what I understand this is getting too complicated from my own head, so you go ahead to so there’s the interesting test.

Dan Petrovic did in 2012 with the canonical tag in how he hijacked well, essentially, hijacked Rand, Fishkin blog using the canonical. So so in the sense, I suppose it it doesn’t necessarily past painted juice, but it does pass on that. Like I mean, I don’t even know what to call it, I mean search engines understand what it is and they understand you know who the the originator of the content is so in terms of link juice.

I don’t know, but search engines certainly understand who the originator is and will display the originator or understand it. You know yeah yeah. The problem there, of course, is that Google may assign a different canonical to the entity and so that’s an issue when a site is seen as perhaps more authoritative or trustworthy, then the there’s a possibility that, despite what it says on the page or in the header, Google may assign a different source as the canonical copy of that thing.

So there’s that element as well. It’s a great question Jeff and John a great question. No, I guess if we should move under the next, I’m sure there’s no, what we can add to this but difficult to encapsulate in such a way. That would be understandable from the basic user anyway be hard for us to prove what we think yeah all right. Let’s move on to the next number right on our run list. It’s from me, King, it’s tunnel between keyword, matching brain match domain.

He said services like plumbing etc. Do I go with a keyword, match domain or stick with a brand exact match domain? It seems to rank more quickly and higher. What’s your end, you know, sort of thing is: what’s your end game? Is this a business you think you’re going to create and you’re going to stick with for the next to retirement. You know, is this your? Is this your passion right? You know what what do you yeah, because, ultimately, you know what is best plumber in in London going to do for you as a brand, that’s going to sustain you and your family for the next 30 years.

Is that going to build affinity, you know, is it going to be be a brand? Is it going to be something that people will put in their phone book and you know call you every year for a service? You know we need to be real about these things, if you’re, not if you’re, if you’re in it, just for a bit of a laugh for the next couple of years. Think you’re going to you know, try and use that, as as as a as a lead gen for the actual business, you know then best plumber in London for sure, but if you’re going to feed your family off this for the next 30 years, you build a Brand build around.

Yes, that’s right, you good! Let’s move on to number nine on our run list at this time, it’s from Bob marks and he the question is: titled. Do Google Sites still past juice, he said? Do Google Sites and other Google properties still pastures? Is this still doing so when you say juice, I mean it’s like if you think about a search engine following these links from different things and understanding who’s doing what, in what context is this being added, etc, etc? Yes, if it’s in the old thing of I just want to talk a link yard to get this done.

No but yeah, you know, if you you know if these are already in place or were you thinking of creating you know a YouTube YouTube account. You know for the brand a couple of different. You know, sort of different things all over the place. You know different accounts for the brand etc. You know as long as it’s consistent, it’s fine. You know you’re building a sort of an infrastructure around to support what you do in terms of passing, linkjuice mm-hmm, I’m not so sure rather, and I suppose it’s what you define as link juice.

Okay, that will we move on to the last question. I run this tonight Linda Lee. It’s a question about backlink building. She said how effective is error hate AR as a tactic for buckling buildings, and I know what Harrow is you guys can tell us what dollar value would you put on each backlink you earn? Are there any metrics used to track the performance, so it’s that so? Firstly, Linda, I think you know just I know, you’re asking about Harrow, etc, but I think you’re completely looking at the wrong way in terms of links, I think you’re going about it completely wrong and I think you need to actually do and understand.

You know natural link building a little bit better than going out and you know because essentially you’re looking at at building links, I think you should understand how you can do this yourself in different ways or shapes or forms, and how to do it sustainably over time. That being said, I don’t I don’t see how this company can it. You can look, I don’t know what product or service for your website is.

So I don’t know, but I honestly don’t know how they can. You know say: they’re going to get X amount of fat because ultimately Harrow is is all depends on what’s in vogue at the minute and what the reporters are asking. Yes, there’s a tons and tons of different genres and different journalists on there. But what happens if, in that particular month literally no one asks for anything in that particular genre or tactic, or that never saw website or industry, and you know they.

They can’t pitch anything to a journalist. Well then, that window, so I and my second part to the answer I already said to you, is, I think you need to understand a little bit about building something, that’s sustainable and and how to go about it yourself rather than buying, because that’s essentially what you’re Doing is you’re buying links in that sense or paying someone to go and build links for you so and – and I think you really need to step back and understand a bit before you even go down that road, but you know, for I think it was yet Two and a half thousand dollars you can hire a pretty good writer for that too.

Obviously, you would you, you know possibly need to do some research. I don’t know what your problem for company is due to and come up with a sensationalized piece that fits with what journalists are looking forward to minute one you provided you creating the content, you’re publishing the content. You’re then, feeding that sensationalized bit of journalism to the other journalists, who will then create the other pieces off the back of your piece when you’ve got the content, they attributed everything and to this sensationalist piece, whether it be a poll, a survey, some graph or charts That you’ve created to go with it to back up the the the sensationalist piece.

You know there are tons of ways for two and a half to create something far better than some shitty eight little links of a journalist who may or may not even be in some mainstream publication. I think you you know, I think you need to really step back and understand something a little bit better about. You know, building links for your brand and company that is sustainable. Then then, thinking of these ways of you know, by paying a company to build them for you or if you are going to do it, you go with a company that is not even going to mention Harrow to you all right.

You should be looking at something. That’s going to be building at scale nationally sustainably. Thank you Tim. Yes, sir. I often wonder what prompts questions on the demacia questions. Facebook group, I wonder if Linda lily – and I have I’m not disparaging without cause, but I wonder if you’re really mentioning Harrow so that people will become aware of it. Well, it’s it’s. I mean heroes like well.

That’s old school man. I mean it’s really old school. I think yeah, I think the thing is with this is people who people read? How can I help my company online or website and then invariably always there’s something or someone mentioning backlinks and then the person goes? How do I get backlinks and Jesus Christ? Even Google, you know, allows ads for it, so people get into this thing that I mean Google’s doing ads for it.

There’s all this and I think they can literally go and buy him. But we all know you know the the misery after penguin that just shit cause – and I just I just wish there was something more informational. I think we’ve discussed this quite a few times. You know if you got it, but if Google’s going to sell these ads, there should be something up there. Like a warning, you know warning before you use these products.

You realize that you know there’s manual, penalties, potential of manual penalties and things like this, but on the other hand, you know people should be doing due. Diligence like Linda has never asked in the sense like she was like cost value, isn’t worth it. She never asked or said: is there potential for a manual penalty like I don’t think she even realizes that her entire site could have a manual penalty and just disappear from from search results? That’s the that’s! The worrying thing is, I think, the lack of due diligence that people do in the sense of their business online.

It’s almost as if that this you know, if you were signing a contract in the real world, you know you would dive into that. You would. You know cross the eyes dot. The t’s sorry other way around, but you would you know what I mean if your livelihood is at stake. You will really check this stuff out. Wouldn’t you, but for some reason in the online world, uh yeah look girl, just got ta, buy some links and then – and if that’s your livelihood, you know it’s a it’s a problem I mean, and this stuff hurts yeah yeah.

Who wants him? Alright, um. I think we’re at that time. Yes, it is. It is that time we’ve answered well. Actually, we haven’t answered them all with quite a few additional questions which will put into the run list over the next week or two so that we don’t suddenly have to deal with their three-week buildup of questions. I don’t want to tire these guys out. Okay well ago, I’d like to thank people like Michael Martinez who answer questions on our dumbest fear questions Facebook group, but through the week I’d like to think that people who answer questions on our Facebook group and on our panel here each week are people.

Like Tim, Kappa, masataka, wasa and Mikey pusher Kershner, your contribution is greatly appreciated, we’ll be back here at the same time next week to do this all again, but for now it’s good night.

Aaron Eden – Google Analytics Introduction

How many of you have actually like had to install it and set it up and all those other things? Are you just a user of it? I guess that was more question that you had questions yeah have you had to actually install it yourself, very cool of it all right.

So then, I’m going to glaze over the installation, part of it a little bit i’ll go through quickly, just so that folks, that haven’t haven’t done that can kind of see how that’s done and then and then we’ll go. What i’m going to do is kind of walk you guys through the setup and installation what are some of the benefits of using google analytics for your website? How to read the dashboard report and a couple of the other kind of big reports that you end up using quite a bit how to set up goals on the website and how to use the root.

All the goals reporting throughout Google Analytics how to set up Site Search if your, if your site has search capabilities, how to get those searches that customers are performing into the Google Analytics data and then a little bit on traffic sources and funnel visualization. If we’ve got enough time we’ll see how how long this takes, I don’t know so I want this to be. This is not intended to be a presentation, so I want it to be sort of interactive and that kind of thing.

So if you guys have questions throughout feel free to ask them, and I tried to sort of prioritize the order we go through things in so that if we run out of time, then we at least got through some some valuable items. So I’m going to do is start by googling living, so this is the the normal just dashboard page. That’s taking google analytics and you know being a bi person. You know, I think, a lot of people start out by looking at how many visits they get to their website.

Oh good and you’d like like. Oh look, I pumped up my visits. I’r doing good and really you know that’s that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Right understanding how many people are coming to your website doesn’t really tell you a whole life left, but actually getting to the point where you can measure how much money you’re making as a result of those people coming to your website or where what areas of your Website or difficult for those customers to use being able to actually enable change and make your website better as a result of the data is really where you want to try and get with this.

So you can see that at the beginning, when you first come in here, you get you get that standard sort of overview of who’s visiting your website and or how many people are visiting your website on each day. You get some general data about how many of those how many actual people are visiting versus how many times they came to your site, I’ll dive deeper into this later, i’m just kind of quickly going through this apartment.

How many pages have actually been viewed on your website average? How many pages each person is looking at on your website? How much time they’re spending bounce rate is really an important metric. This is how many people came. Your website looked at a single page and left, so obviously you didn’t engage them or or your page, it could be depending on how your business is set up that that’s exactly what you want right so just depends on your website, but most websites.

You want to pull people, I didn’t, engage them and having them hit. Multiple pages is a good thing, so you want to read that bounce rate and then there and I’m a question yep, there’s like if you like, sometimes I’ll, go to a site by accident. I’ll, be there literally like a second or less yes. Does that actually count? Does that all get tracks like it’s? Not, it doesn’t discard those results. Yeah that would get counted name you’d have a really low time on site.

Yeah affect their bounce rain right, it’s so in that example, that tells the site owner. So there was some reason you found that website right, you yeah you excited or something else, or you found the link through somebody else’s website, whatever that was, it had the wrong. It was wrong for you right again, so what I thought it was going to be. Was it what it was exactly so so the value of that site owner in seeing that that happened is that he can.

He can actually look and see where you came from and trying to figure out why there was a disconnect between what you thought you were going to get and what you got yeah like I manone tab appeaser that gives you results yeah, so so the set up For google analytics is actually pretty straightforward. So when you, when you go into google analytics and you set up a new website, it actually will generate a snippet of code for you super yeah.

It will actually generate us a snippet of code for you. You can see down here when you create a new account and so literally to set up google analytics tracking for my website. I copy and paste that code into the bottom of the bottom of the page. So you know, if you’re, using using any sort of templating system, you stick it into the template, so so it appears in every single page. If, for some reason, there’s something ages, you don’t want tragic and just leave it out of those pages and you won’t get tracking there’s, definitely some advanced things that you can do with this code, but I’m not going to go into that in this.

In this talk, really the basis is grab this code and stick it in your website and now you’ve got recording, really actually very detailed and robust reporting any questions on that before I move fast cool. So, let’s see we did set up. Let’s go a little bit deeper on the dashboard so again back to so I’m looking at my my audience overview report and you can see that I’ve got some additional demographics about the people that are visiting my website where there which countries they’re coming from which operating Systems and computers they’re, using whether they’re coming in from a mobile browser, we’ve got a lot of really good detail here.

What I want to show you guys is that you know when you get to the point where, where you’ve got, where you’ve got goals set up inside of Google Analytics right. So so now i’m looking at a US or the world map that shows where my visitors are coming from see most of mine are coming from the u.S. I’ve got a few from Canada. What happens when I want to go up here to my goal set, so I have to find some specific goals on my website that are important important for me.

So you can see gold number one viewed the pricing page. So if they came to my website and fiddled around did a bunch of stuff and then eventually viewed my pricing page, that’s good for me. I want to track how many people are getting that page, so that can help make that better right. If ninety percent of the people never come to the pricing page, then I’m doing something wrong until I need to adjust that, so you can see that that number one goal one percent of my users are making that goal.

Looking at my pricing page number two is that they actually full number two listed on periods that they actually paid for the service, and you can see it’s point: zero four percent of the users and then the number of people that looks like these two goals are Actually broken, how many people view the registration page and view the basic registration page doesn’t show. So that’s basically, you know for this website.

You’ve been a landing page, that kind of promotes what the product is and then that pricing page that I was just talking about. If so, now that that goal for few pricing would have been hit by me coming to this web page, and if I had hit the sign up now, there’s that’s the basic sign up goal and then, if you completed it completed this process that you would have Paid for the product and there’d be another another goal it in there, and I think this is this.

Account is like ten dollars a month, so it would actually track ten dollars a month or ten dollars in revenue at that point in time, there’s also controls with one goal: they’re all separate goals and I’ll show you the funnel a little bit later on. What’s that, why do you do that separate to the one? Well, so the the way that Google Analytics has funnel recording setup and goal reporting set up their separate, although the goals actually feed into the funnel so i’ll just show you really quick, so it makes sense.

It’s easier to see a picture. They move everything around recently everything points, so you actually so the funnels wrong right anyway. The if I could find the stupid thing I’ll show it to you, but the the goals actually end up being steps in the funnel so they’re they’re related and when you go all every single report weld on every single. But most of the reports that are in here you can see goal set one up here at the top, where I can hit that so pretty much.

Every report allows you to filter by whole set so by setting up with the goals you you enable the visibility on all of those different reports to slice by those gold steps versus going to a separate, funnel report. That shows you how many people are are painting each one of those steps right. So it’s giving you additional additional dimensions to kind of be able to slice the data mine. So let’s see here, so let me walk you guys through how to set up a goal.

So when you come in here, there’s little options: gear up in the upper right hand corner you can see under profiles. I’ve got assets, goals, users, filters or profile settings, so I’m going to go into my goals. So here are those exact same goals that I that I showed you a second ago. Google analytics allows you to set up four different sets of five goals. This is really just a way for you to organize.

They don’t have any other meaning than other than to organize them in the sense you you saw in those in those reports where it says, goals that one, if I met gold set to set up I’d, be able to flip onto that. You can kind of toggle between them, so it just makes the reports a little bit cleaner and I stop so I’m going to go ahead and set up a new goal, but so so actually I’ve got some some new things on here that I haven’t.

I haven’t set up goals for do that, so part of the reasons that some of my metrics are really sucking on that last on that last screen is that I I don’t have stopped sort of promoting the scheduling part of this and I’ve started promoting this book. So he can’t get past the homepage Google Analytics just took over my cool, it’s cool, except when you don’t expect it, it’s going to go all right, something new.

Apparently, if you have google analytics loaded in chrome at the same time, while you visit the web page it’ll pop itself over wow, so so on on this landing page, let’s say that I want to. I want to set it up so that whenever you hit this hit, this go button and it takes you over to the second screen that I wanted to track that. So so I’m going to say, you know book sign up, say it’s an active goal.

You can either set up a URL destination goal, so literally this is just simply copying and pasting the URL. Actually, I just realize that’s a bad example, so let’s say that it was I wanted. I want to track the goal for whether the customer came and hit my frequently asked questions page, but we not something I would really care about, but do it anyway, so literally, all I’m doing is is copying from the URL.

The page that I want, you don’t have to copy the entire domain and you paste that into the goal URL and if you wanted to you, could give it a dollar in value if it had one. In this case, you know that I could, I could actually say, that’s that’s worth a dollar to be, because that’s a support call that I didn’t have to take, because they went to my frequently asked questions whatever, whatever that’s worth to your business, so I can go In here and set it up as a dollar, and then you can tell it whether this goal is part of the funnel or not.

So this goes back to the question David was asking before when you set, the goals are actually aligned directly to the phones. So I’m not going to set this in the phone and you be. I’ve got a new bull in there. So now, if I go back to any other reports, apparently it doesn’t take effect right away, make sure what’s up yeah, it takes a little while for it to process the data forget about that in here.

So so anyway. So now I’ve got a new goal in there. That’s that’s tracking that after Google does its processing I’ll get some some retroactive data about how many people have actually hit that goal and then just like the rest of these, I could I can slice and dice any of the reports by which goals the customers have Hit anybody have any questions about the goals. Now, that’s it’s really, it’s pretty straightforward to set them up.

I guess actually, I could show you some of the other in setting up to they fill out a form by just putting in the one like the paging fixin to what I’m done filling out the form right exactly it’s literally, but like the easiest way to do It is just to walk through the process yourself and then, wherever you end up, that’s the spot. You want to track copy that URL and you’re done alright. So the next thing that that you’ll want to fill probably pretty valuable, especially once you’ve got your goal set up, is to get into the traffic sources.

Reports hear the traffic sources, so these traffic source reports basically show you where customers are coming from when they come to your website. So, in this case, for this website, you can see that have about half of my traffic is coming from search engines about thirty. Five percent is coming from other websites that have links back to me. Fifteen percent are coming from. It would actually just typed it into the address bar or you know, maybe maybe it was from an email or something like that and then last is.

Is campaigns I’ll show you how to how to actually set up campaigns, but this could be a search engine marketing campaign. It could be an email campaign. You can completely designee all of your own campaigns through the whole thing, but this really gives me a breakdown of where my visitors are coming from. So you can see in this case. That here are. Some of the here are some of the search terms that people are actually typing into Google or other search engines before they get to my website.

This really helps you on the SEO side of things, to figure out how people are finding you. If specific words are driving a lot of traffic to your website, then maybe you should be focused on on two things: making sure that you’ve got the content to cover. You know that when they do come to you, because of that search term, that you got content that is relevant to what that search was and then on the flip side being able to optimize further for that search term dive a little deeper into this.

So the all traffic report Michael sets there now, so the whole traffic report is going to break this down by website, so you can see that all of the traffic that I’ve got coming in from google. This is all you know, search traffic. You can see how much time those people are spending on the site compared to what the other visitors are spending on the site, as well as how many of those people were new, so you might have websites that are driving a lot of repeat visitors.

This is your way to be able to tell that and then again back to that st. Bounce rate as before, how many of those people are coming in and just jumping right out. So you can see that, based on this my website, I want to have a low bounce rate, and so, if I search if I search through this, you can see that that some of these, obviously some of these with low hits, probably not go, be aware. So you can see that these two, these two people that I pulled in from the 60-second marketer website they came in.

They served around 13 different pages. They spent 12 minutes on the website and one of them was a returning person and they didn’t bounce. They all navigated around right, so in in the in this case. For my business, these people are really valuable. There’s been a lot of time on the website, so I need to find out why they came across and how I can do more of that on that on that website or on other websites that are like it one more example so, but you can see like The these answers com, referrals from yahoo getting a lot of visits, but they’re really not not looking around on the site, much they’re not doing much once they’re there.

A lot of them are new people, but most of just come in the feed. So in that case, I probably want to reduce the amount of time that I’m spending answering yahoo answers unless there’s some other benefit to it. So in that case I know that I keep doing it because I’m actually getting links back in, and so it helps on the search engine side of things. So it’s worth it, but you have to base to analyze that for your business and figure out, what’s going to what you know, whether that’s valuable or tomorrow, again back to being able to track my goals.

So I can actually see now that I switched to the goals view I could actually see which of these has has monetary value to my business. So those saying those same goal, tracking dollar amounts and those kinds of things right now with really low sales. The most valuable stuff is going in direct people that are either either getting emails or that I’ve been a person that went in signed up for the service.

Whatever the case may be, those ones are actually most valuable, probably bad example, because it’s not millions of dollars but hopefully get the idea. Not really it’s going to be different, my business, the one thing you do have is, I find it there’s a benchmarking report. There used to be a benchmarking I’ll see if I can find it for you, there’s a there’s, a benchmarking report, that’s in here where, if you opt into their service google in the in the oh, you know what i’ll just go back to the overview.

Really quick. Just so, I can show you here David here’s that here’s the funnel thing that I could not find the minute ago kept on the bit. I think maybe they took the benchmarking out. They used to have these type of benchmarking report where they would automatically would automatically click. You know it’s collecting this data for lots of other websites, and so you basically would give it a demographic that your website is in and then it would show you some benchmark data against other websites that are similar to your own.

So at least you can kind of get an idea of whether you’re in the right, ballpark or not, but it’s in it varies a lot and it looks like they discontinued it completely. So I don’t know I’ll dig a little bit i’ll see if I can find it for you, alright, so the let’s see I want to dig into the traffic sources just a little bit. So I mentioned before that you can track here, Revere different marketing campaigns, and – and these don’t have to be – these – don’t have to be a google as sem by or a Facebook ad or those kinds of things.

This could be as simple as wanting wanting to put a link on somebody else’s website and wanting to track how many people came specifically from that one and tie that, together with an email that was that had the same topic. So I guess what I’m saying by that is that you can create your own campaigns completely, and they can really be made up of any sorts of media that you’re that that you might utilize.

You can see in here that I created one campaign. It drove three visits: two pages per visit, etc. When I click it on that campaign, you’ll actually see that it now drills into the sources and mediums section, and I can tell that that that this coupon code that I gave out to people was given on this startups com website and that that’s it. That’s as deep as I went with that, let me show you: is there any way you like to go in and change the number manually like to reflect someone who calls you or something like this one looks at your site and ecology would makes a purchase or Something, no you wouldn’t do that.

You could remember what I mentioned, that you can sort of tweak the code that you put into your web page. You could actually sort of hack that apart and create yourself a little page that you could hit whenever you get a phone call and like that page would keep it. Give you a call, so you could kind of work around it manually, but it doesn’t. Google doesn’t have a way to just so the so Google has this URL builder.

That’s intended for building your own, your own marketing campaigns. So let’s, let’s say that I want to. I want to drive customers directly to my pricing page, so I’m going to paste that URL into the URL box here the source. Let’s, let’s say that I’m going to I’m going to I’m going to send out an email blast out to a whole bunch of different people and I’m going to try to drive them to this as part of the website so on there.

I want to track my campaign sources, MailChimp literally. What you’re typing in the boxes here is what’s going to show up in the reports, literally a case-sensitive everything, so you can. You can make up any sort of any values you want for any of these boxes. To be able to track your marketing campaigns, so in this case it’s an it’s an email campaign and I don’t have any search words that I want to track for it campaign content.

Let’s say that I was doing I’m going to do an a/b test with my email and send out one batch to one set of customers in a different email to another batch restrooms. So this is my email, one and, and my campaign name is whatever 99 discount rate. So what happens when I, when I put all this information in is, is Google’s actually going to generate a URL for me that you can see that it all it’s doing is simply taking the values that I typed in the boxes and putting them into this into This URL and what happens is when, when I send this URL out via email to my customers, when they click on that, it actually tells Google to track that campaign in that way, and so literally by by giving this special link up now, I’m going to get Campaign data back in that portion of google analytics just like this, so I can actually show that stock of the show up right away.

It’s valuable! The one thing that you can’t see with this example, which I should have probably set up a different example. So so in this, let’s just say it’s the signal: let’s say that this new email that i’m going to send out right now is part of that same campaign from before. So i’m running a i’m running a banner ad on startups calm and i’m also going to email, a bunch of people with the same offer and so by by putting that same campaign name into this box as the one that I used for startups com.

What happens? Is you see this overall campaign here that I can drill into and if I was to click on this and I had some of the some of the items from my email campaign, you would see those both listed here. You see startup stock cotton deal and the email campaign, so you can actually roll those all up to the same campaign and see which blog is driving driving the most sales for your for your website.

What any questions at this point any! Are there any other? So I’ve been talking specifically about like e-commerce websites and where you’re trying to do sales on the page, do any of you have any examples of things that, where you’re not quite sure how this might fit with what you’re trying to do exactly yeah. So, based on that, you could track the QR code scans to just like anything else. Okay site search was the last topic that I wanted to hit.

We can drill into any other areas that you guys want so site search. Is your ability to see? I don’t know if I’ve got any data in here to show you guys, because I actually just enable it last week. So what site search does is if you’ve got a page, so here’s here’s the blog for that same website. So I’ve got this. I’ve got the search box over here on the right, so people can search through all of my different blog posts.

So if I want to be able to attract mean Google Analytics how many of those searches people are doing on there, so the value the value to you in being able to do that is that the the searches that people are performing lets. You know what kind of content they’re looking for. So if, if you see that people are searching for specific types of content on your website – and you don’t have any content for it – that you can use this data actually go into create content to support that.

You know in the case of an e-commerce website where maybe you got products that you’re selling on there. You see that people are searching for a specific type of product, and you don’t have that product, then maybe you want to consider offering it so kind of goes. Both ways with products and blog content and there’s good to think so so in order to be able to track your your searches we have to do is again go back to this back to this options box on the top right and under.

I think it’s your profile settings you’ll, you’ll, see this site search settings section down at the bottom, and so all you need to do is say I do want to track site search and when you go over to whatever the area is where perform the searches notice. That I typed the word games in here in the search and I pressed enter to get the results. But what happens is up on the URL? The query string was automatically billed and you can see s equals games up here.

So that tells me that the parameter s which is searched in this case is what what’s going to hold that value, and so literally, all you have to do is a do, track, site, search and then type the letter or the set of letters that popped up In your search string at the top into this box and tell it to strip all the other query parameters out, so you don’t end up with 12 other. If there’s other parameters that are in there, you don’t want those to end up in your Google Analytics reports.

For search, so you tell to just strip them all out and then I say apply and literally it’s as easy as that and now I can now I can see the types of types of searches that customers are performing on my website. Yeah there was yes and for the google analytics site search. Sorry, I’m trying to find it under query parameter nothing in the query, parameter box. You want to put whatever that. Whatever that letter was that showed up in the URL at the top so would adjust.

The letter is what it’s your show of this, or it may not be a letter. It might be a set of lenders, yes cool. So, in your case, if we searched her yeah yeah, you just grab the word. The word search term sticking in the query parameter felt the strip all the other garbage out of your done this one I this one doesn’t seem to go back through the data retro actively. So the point where you turn on that that reporting capability in Google on the links to get data from that point forward, but I don’t think it will give you historical yeah that was just WordPress.

It literally works with any with as long as the as long as the search term gets put into a query string in the page, it’ll work. So Aries said WordPress, like you talk a little bit about with different content management systems. WordPress people do are there any particular best practices of gotchas with respect to different console management systems, specifically for the site search just sit overall, google analytics like yes, so i’m not i’m not familiar with with to my most of the stuff.

I’ve Ducks been with WordPress, but I know that I suspect you most probably got similarly, then you can actually let me actually show you so I’ve got a I’ve got a plugin for wordpress that I absolutely love for google analytics and i’m sure it’s your mind. So the other kind of purple business we probably have some similar things right place. It’s called ultimate GA, google analytics so remember. I was talking before about taking that snippet of JavaScript code from Google and putting it into your web page.

With this plug-in, you don’t even have to do that. You literally just get your account ID and put it in here and and you’re finished. The some of the reasons that I like this one is that it allows you to ignore when admins are logged into the WordPress site. So I won’t see data about my visits to the website, so it doesn’t get inflated by my use and then it’s also got the ability to track track external links.

So it’ll change the links around on your website when they’re pointed somewhere else and let you see in Google and Google Analytics it’ll actually show up as an outbound link. So you can actually see when you’re sending traffic away from your website at Google Analytics as well, and then the same thing. I’ve downloads that any time there’s an object to download it will insert itself in between. So you can see how many people are downloading those items from your website and do you combine that lick with some other SEO plugins or any other tools to get to maximize? It is try and think of other things where it’s valuable, there’s a little areas where, where you can actually track other events that are going on.

Oh, I see you have all in one SEO right there, yeah, okay, oh you meant specifically for SEO yeah. Just you know getting them to work together, see ya. You know you optimize the page for a certain kind of results, but then you read what happens yeah exactly yes, so with the all-in-one SEO, plugin is pretty pretty simple. Actually, it literally just gives you a spot in your blog post to be able to make sure that you’ve got the right title and description and meta keywords.

There’s a couple other ones: I’ve seen that are pretty powerful where, where it will actually ask you what the search term is that you’re, targeting with this blog post and we’ll go into some other analysis for you and sit, and let you know whether, whether that’s something You should be targeting or each pick a different term and that kind of stuff I haven’t been using it on here, but in fact I think we’ve got it on the gangplank website.

Show that really quick yeah see ya this WordPress SEO. You know that’s going succulent yeah, so this one, you can say what what search term are you targeting with this blog post and then it’ll, it’ll, analyze, the post and all the pieces of content ready to? Let you know whether your your page title in this case? Doesn’t actually match the search term you’re going after so because they’re not alive you’re, probably going to get weaker results on that.

But then you can see down here. It’s the same kind of stuff. That was in the other one. The title in the description and the keywords and those kinds of things, so this one will give you a little bit more detailed on detail on the analysis and then you can actually set up to advanced things like redirecting the page to other places safely. Other pieces that are poor for SEO any other questions. I guess that’s it or should I had to keep it interacted? It’s got a mess.

Oh gosh, the second trainer holy week. The presentation you can show you

The Future of Blazor on the Client

Blazer is a client web UI framework based on net and c-sharp instead of javascript. Now previously, the browser was a black box that you couldn’t get your dotnet code into now with blazer. You can use dotnet for your client web development needs. But what if you need to take your app to other native platforms like mobile, desktop and other devices? It could be really expensive to have to build native experiences for all those platforms and you might not have the developer resources or the developer.

Skill sets one common strategy is to use the ubiquity of the web and your existing web developers to build apps with native like capabilities in the future. We want to evolve blazer so that you can use it to build apps that have those native like capabilities, so we’re going to walk this spectrum from the web to native applications. Now, we’ve already seen blazer server apps in dotnet core 3. Oh it’s available this week.

Download and install it try it out. Blazer server apps enable you to get ad rich client side interactivity to your existing dotnet web applications. Now they run on the server, but they allow you to have that client interactive feel like a single page web application. They also enable you to leverage the capabilities of the browser using JavaScript Interop. Let me hop over here to visual studio, here’s the blazer weather application that we saw earlier this week.

This is a blazer server, app I’ve already refactored it again to move all of its components into this razor class library. This blazer web weather core. We expand some of these folders, we’ll see all the the Razr files in there there. They are that’s so that I can reuse these components in the future demos when the blaze their server app. We’ve we’ve seen what this looks like: it has a UI for showing the current weather, and one of the things that we already saw is that we do have client side interactivity.

We can click on and change the current temperature unit. We can also use the capabilities of the browser to get the users current location by clicking here that should use the geolocation API is to give us where we’re currently at all right. One other thing that I’ve added to this application that also leverages an additional an additional capability is the browser’s local storage. I used it’s. Actually a community project was a github comm blaze word.

This is a project by Chris st. II and he’s done a whole bunch of really good stuff. He has a package that uses JavaScript Interop to enable local storage and blazer applications. I use that so that if we go back to the app we can store our pinned locations locally in the browser. So, let’s like go to Chicago and we’ll pin that one there it is, and now we can cycle through our pin locations. So we have Seattle and Chicago if I grab this URL and just going to close that tab and then we’ll open up a new one browse back, we still have Seattle and Chicago as our pinned locations using the browser’s local storage to store those things.

So we get to leverage browser caching, this yes, yes, oh yeah, this this makes me ready now for the Deaf. Thank you mr. Prez, all right, all right, we’re going to blaze on now: okay, whoo, yeah, okay. So, what’s the next step on adding more native-like capabilities to our blazer application? Well, the next step is blazer. Webassembly blazer web assembly apps run in the browser on a web assembly base hot net runtime.

Sorry so, with a blazer web assembly app, the files can your app is just a bunch of static files and they can be downloaded. They are downloaded into the browser and then executed, and they can then leverage the capabilities of the browser. Well, so I’ve taken the same application. This is the the server version. Let’s close, that, let’s now go to a different project, and this is a web assembly version of the same project.

It’s actually using exactly the same components. This is kind of cool a lot of customers that I talked to are starting out with Blaser server. With the plan to win one sweet blazer web assembly is available in May of next year that they can then shift their app to actually run full on and in the client. But let’s go ahead and run the web assembly. Version of this app looks pretty much. The same does the same things like we can get the I gets our current location here.

We should should be in Redmond yep there. We are all right and then, if we f12 and look at what was downloaded to this application, it looks a little bit different. Yeah, so there you see down at the bottom, there’s that mono dot wasum file, that is our web assembly based at runtime. So this app is actually running a client side directly in the browser now to show that that’s really occurring, we can even debug when I f12 again.

If we look in the console, you can see there’s a debugging hot key gesture that we can do. I’r not debugging this in Visual Studio, I’m actually going to use the browser dev tools to debug it. We don’t support debugging in Visual Studio yet for blaze or webassembly apps, but we will in the future for now don’t run it with debugger in Visual Studio. And then you can do use do this trick. So I’m going to hit shift alt D and that’s going to try and bring up the browser dev tools to connect to the tab that I want to debug through a debugging proxy that we set up for you now for that to work.

We actually have to run the browser with remote debugging enabled, which I don’t have it doing currently, and it’s telling me how I can restart it. So it does do that. So I’m going to close down the browser completely and I’m going to run the command that it just told me to do to restart the browser with remote, debugging enabled and we’ll hit that gesture again shift alt D, and now I should get the browser dev tools That can connect to my tab.

There we go alright. So let’s put this side-by-side with the tab, I want to debug and we’ve already got some files open. Let’s go ahead and close those in the in the sources tab we can see down here. Alright, we can actually take a look at all of our give myself a little more space, all the files that are in our application, so there’s blazer weather core. What do we want to look at? Let’s look at let’s look at the temperature unit: picker we’ll open that file up.

We can set a breakpoint right here on the click handler when the temperature has changed. Let’s go ahead and get the current location back up on the screen, so we can change the current of the temperature unit. Well, click and there we just hit a breakpoint in c-sharp in the browser running on top of a web assembly based at runtime. We can even expand down here and take a look at some of the local fields in our component.

So currently the temperature was was Fahrenheit, let’s hop out of here, and let that the app continue. If we clip the temperature unit picker again, it should say that it’s changed and has it yeah. It looks like we’re good. So now the temperature is Celsius, so there we’re just debugged our blazer web assembly, app directly clients eyes. So that’s pretty cool, oh, go ahead and let that run all right.

So that’s blazer web assembly. Now we can use some of the more modern web standards in our blazer web assembly, app to make it even more native-like and apps like this are typically called progressive, web, apps or pwace. What is a PWA? Well, a PWA is just a web app, but it uses modern web standards to enable things like offline support. You add a serviceworker so that the files can be cached and used even when the browser is not connected.

Support for push notifications, pwace tend to are fast and responsive, so they have that native app like feel on some platforms. They can even be OS installable, like you, can pin them to your home screen on your phone or on Windows 10. You can install them so that it can be, they can be run from your Start menu. So we can take our blazer webassembly app and turn it into a PWA all right. Let’s do that.

So actually, we’ve already got it running and if you we look at the top with our blazer webassembly app, you can see there’s a couple of icons up there and this one here is says: install install blazer, whether as PWA, that’s because the browser and Windows 10 Is detecting that this is a progressive web app if I go ahead and click that yeah, let’s go ahead and install, and now we see our blazer web assembly app, but it’s in like a native shell, with all the same functionality still works like I don’t know, Saying this, so we can find new locations, we can get the location by by geolocation and we can see that on the Start screen of my Windows – 10 box, there is my blazer weather app and it has a nice little icon.

So that shows up in the Start menu. So that’s pretty cool. So that’s that’s a blazer PWA. How did we enable this? If we go back to the code and look at how this was implemented in the www root folder, we can see there’s a serviceworker that was added to this application. This is a piece of JavaScript that enables caching and then there’s also this manifest file which specifies like icons that can be used when this app is either pinned to a home screen or or to the the Start menu and the windows device.

That is that blazer PWA, starting to look a little bit more native. It’s got a native shelves, it’s runnable from the Start, menu. Let’s go ahead and close that all right, hybrid apps are native apps that run natively on the device they have access to all the native capabilities of the of the device, but they use web technologies for rendering their UI. So, for example, you might have a mobile application, that’s running natively, but it’s using a webview for rendering all of its user interface or you can have an electron application and an electron application is using an embedded chromium shell to handle all of it.

So, let’s your user interface, let’s see if we can build blazer, hybrid apps as well, we’ve been doing some experiments in this space when we go back to visual studio. Alright. So here in my third project, we have a blazer weather electron app, so I’m going to set this as the startup project and we’re going to ahead and run it again. It’s using the same components as before, but now, instead of running as a web application, this blazer electron app is going to run in an electron shell.

It’s a native shell, like we have all the access to all the native capabilities of electron. The same functionality still works, let’s see what the weather is like in New York, then it goes. We can get the the current location and so forth. We have all of our pin sites, and this HAP is interesting because it’s not actually using webassembly the blazer webassembly app and the progressive web app. Those were both webassembly based.

They were running in or inside the browser using the web assembly based runtime and, as a result, they were also limited by the browser security sandbox. A lot of people ask me about blazer webassembly apps when they see the dll’s being downloaded into the browser and asked. Is that is that safe? Is that okay, like? Is there any security issue there? The answer is no, because the code that’s being executed is being executed using that dotnet webassembly runtime running in the browser security sandbox.

So it can’t do anything more than what normal JavaScript could do in a browser. Application can’t do anything more and I can’t do anything less either. It has all the capabilities of what JavaScript can do, but no more so it is safe. In this case, though, we’re running on electron, an electron app the.Net code is running in a normal dotnet core process. Nak dotnet core process does actually have full access to the native capabilities of the machine.

So if you want to touch the file system or open arbitrary network connections with this application, that’s stuff that you can do in this application. So basically, what we have here is a native desktop app with the UI built using web technologies built using dotnet and it’s cross-platform. This will run on Windows, Mac and Linux. So that’s an example of a what a blazar hybrid app. What might look like, at least for desktop scenarios? This is something that we’re exploring and investigating.

If you want to play around with blazer electron, I think I have this you’re all set up. You should go to HBS whack whack, blazer, electron, akms, blazer electron is the euro and let’s see if this is not alive. I think I set this up this morning. Yeah there we go. This will take you to our HP, Labs repo and we have an experimental project that we’re working on that integrates blazer with with electron and there’s a sample there that you can try out all right now.

The last stop on our spectrum from web to native is going well. The first ones get passed. The hybrid screen is going full native actually having a native app, but instead of using web UI. What are web technologies to render the the UI Wow we use native controls so that we can leverage the native controls of the device? This is an area also that we’re investigating and experimenting with. I don’t have a live demo for for this area, but Blaser was architected from the beginning so that its renderer was extensible.

The default renderer in Blaser renders HTML and that’s why you used laser to build web applications, not too surprising there, but the renderer can be replaced. In fact, you can replace it with a different renderer that renders to whatever you want, like you might render. Instead to native controls, there’s a really cool demo, that is just a tech demo, an experiment. It’s not anything that so we have any plans to ship, but that seefs anderson did at NDC oslo earlier this year and what he did is he took the blazer renderer.

He replaced it with a renderer that could render to native flutter controls, so he was able to build a flutter app using Blaser writing his code in c-sharp. Normally flutter apps would be written with dart. U it’s pretty pretty cool demo. You can take a look at it at the link below a kms blutter, so Blaser plus flutter. It gets you blutter. I guess where you can see, see senator sanderson a demo that capability of blazer again.

This is not something that we actually plan to ship, but it just shows you what is possible with the the blazer model. This is very um, similar in nature to what you typically write with applications that are using technologies like xamarin or react native. These are applications that run natively on the device and then also a render to native controls in a cross-platform way. We’re looking at. Could we do something similar with blazer like have a blazer native? That does a very similar thing, nothing to share yet there, but it is an area that that we are currently looking at all right.

So this is what the roadmap now looks like for for blazer blazer server is available. Today, it is supported in dotnet core 3 o. If you want to build a blazer server app and deploy it into production, you can do that right now. Go ahead and download it install it. It’s great. You can start adding some rich interactivity to your existing done at web applications blaze. Our web assembly we announced earlier this week will ship next year.

We’re targeting May of next year will start to see more progress on that in the in the months ahead. We’re also starting work on blaze or hybrid apps and blazer progressive web apps. You should expect to start to see previews of that functionality in some of the dotnet 5 previews that will be coming up shortly. Dotnet 5 is expected to ship in November of next year, but hopefully we’ll have previews at PD, PWA support and electron sooner than that, if you want to play around with blazer webassembly apps as pwace, there are actors, some really nice community projects out there that you Can download and install and those those are really great to try out blaze.

Our native is not something that we have any concrete roadmap for, but it’s an area that we are experiment experimenting with and we hope to learn more about and talk to talk to. Folks, like you to see what we should should should do there, so that is the future of blazer on the client. I hope you enjoyed the things that you see that you saw, I hope, you’re excited about them, give them a try, try out blazer an electron with a sample, try out blazer webassembly, give us feedback and, of course, make sure you download dotnet core 3.

Oh today, there is no time like the present so make sure you’re using the the bits that are already ready available. This is a bunch of useful resources that you can go look at to get started with. Blazer get go to blazer net to get the bits and find the documentation you can get the dotnet core 3o bits at the dotnet. Slash get core 3 go make sure you get Visual Studio if you’re on on Windows you’re going to want to get the latest release of Visual Studio 16.

3. We have a wonderful blazer workshop if you want to learn how to program with blazer and participate in the blazer community. They have a lot of great folks, like Chris dainty, who did the blizzard project and and others that are building wonderful, JavaScript, Interop libraries and component libraries, and with that I’m going to turn the remainder of the time over to questions yeah. Thank you check this out.

Yeah yeah, so thank you so much. We have a little special surprise. What so I want everybody. That’s reading to know that this is actually Dan’s 15-year anniversary of Microsoft. It is blazer, probably wouldn’t exist without Dan with a lot of people. So a lot of people work on placing the blazer thing, and so I want to give you this gift. This is a blazer pillow, what’s even better about this blazer pillow, if you swipe up on the blazer pillow, that is that spectacular.

Are these place fabricated at large, like a one-of-a-kind thing? I don’t know this this this. That is congratulations, 15 years to the next 15 years. Yes, thank you right. Let me borrow that pillow for a couple of weeks I mean just just. Maybe we probably have a ton of questions. Oh there’s lots of people tweeted you in your brand new jacket sweet. Do you want to yeah? Let’s do it. So, let’s start from the left here and we’re going to get this question here.

Well, blazer be a good choice for enterprise level, web apps that need high availability, scalability and fine grained services on the cloud. While this is really good yeah, you know I I mean. That’s what the it’s built for and blaze our server in particular that’s what’s shipping today, that’s what’s supported absolutely supported for large enterprise applications, so I think we we think of Blazers being particularly well suited to enterprise apps for line of business applications yeah.

It would be absolutely yes, it is ready. So yes, yes, yes all right. What else do we have here? So what about this one? How do you users, how do you have users update new build versions and a blazer pw8 updates? How do you do that updates to new versions in a PWA, so I believe, that’s all managed by your Service Worker policy like the so I think the inherent question is there is when you download a PWA, you can often set up a serviceworker so that it’s Available offline, which is effectively that caches the files when you set up a serviceworker, I believe that’s where you put policy about like when does the app go back to get the new files and I’m sure, there’s also a way where you can just enforce the aptitude? Fresh, but I think that’s how you would do it I’ll have to I’ll double check on that, but that’s my current understanding.

We haven’t done a lot of Investigations and blazer and PWA, yet we’ve just done some early. You know proof of concepts like you saw today. This is an area that I expect that you’ll see us looking more into in the.Net 5 wave all right next question: any updates about supporting G RPC web for blazer, also blazer native on mobile yeah ER PC web. That’s that’s! That’s really interesting. So we support grq, see now in tot nick horror, 3.

Oh, how ever it doesn’t work from a browser? You can’t speak the G RPC protocol from the browser to to your front end servers. There is a variant of G RPC that you can use called G RPC web. We don’t currently support it today and we don’t have concrete plans to support it yet, but we are talking about it as a potential area to to invest so don’t know yet. But let us know if you think that would be interesting and useful for blaze are native well, we just talked a whole bunch about what we’re thinking for for blazer native.

We are right now in the prototyping and investigating stage. Blazer was architected from the beginning to support non web native scenarios where you replace its render, with some other render that can go to native controls. It’s very similar to what like react, did react, started out as a web framework and then move to support native apps with react. Native laser can absolutely do the the same thing.

What the roadmap for that is. Yet we don’t know it’s still TBD TBD. Okay, we have another question here: APW a using blazer, that’s something really attractive, but for now my question is which server off integration is preferred like Windows or DB. Chrome has problems with Windows off so which off mechanism should you use with a blazer application, so that will impart depend on your hosting model like if you’re hosted on the server or, if you’re running on web assembly in the client and really the type of author.

You then use will depend on your app and will tomato it depend on your environment if you’re running in the client on webassembly, that’s like a spa, so you use spa style, authentication patterns. Typically, that means using like an open ID, connects a row off like flows where you acquire a jot token and use that with all of your HTTP client requests. You can also use cookie based off from from a spa.

That is that it’s possible blaze, our server apps. You have the whole set of auth options available to you, based on what you’re trying to do. If you’re, if you’re providing a line of business application – and you have Windows users, you want to let them log in Windows off, it would be a great option if you’re writing an app where you need users to be able to register their own user profiles and Have their own passwords that you want to manage, then using a spirit, core identity for your authentication support, it’s a great option for the webassembly apps using identity servers, support for open ID connect with probably probably what you want to do fantastic.

So just a couple of pictures like this one to me is what it feels like: I’m there and another one of course, looking sharp. If you follow him, you’ll find he did another picture of me, but not as flattering as this Jeremy. You got to get my good side. Buddy now for sure lays a jacket for more important questions. Obviously, can this be integrated with an existing Donette framework project? If so, how via new get that’s? That’s the you know, that’s a it’s a great question: could you, whose blazer, with a dotnet framework out, let me blaze our server? Obviously, not because blazer server is is is running on asp.

Net core, like it’s using the signal, our support in asp.Net core, so no with with dotnet choreo. You can’t run that on a dotnet framework. App blazer web assembly is just static files, so it doesn’t really care what is on the the server it could be actually PHP or whatever on the server. So technically I guess you could use dotnet framework on the server with a blazer webassembly app, but it’s really been optimized and integrated with dotnet core, like the full stack experience that we imagined for blaze, our web assembly is you have dotnet core on the server blazer Web assembly on the client – and we provide you all the nice integration points there.

That’s that’s Wemo how we mostly imagine it being used but technically should be doable and here’s like a super awesome question mica. What does it say yeah? Is that Blazers future of web development is blazer the future not try to put it on a spot again where in the jacket – and you have a pillow with your face on it, you say it’s super authoritative comes to the future of web dome. Yeah absolutely is for many many web developers.

Is it going to be the only way that people write web apps going forward like some some people ask like? Does this mean I that no one will ever write JavaScript again like no? That’s not what blazer is going to do. There will be lots of people still running JavaScript there’ll, be lots of people writing in all sorts of different technologies. What web assembly did is it actually opened up the door for really any platform? You want to be used in the browser, so I imagine there’ll, be people using Python and go and rust in the browser as well, but we are working really hard to make sure we have a great dotnet full stack web development story.

Alright, so here is another one, and this is interesting to me because I remember when this was introduced. I saw Sanderson demo it to me. It was me it was Damion, Edwards and Fowler, and we just sat there were like holy cow. This is ridiculous, and the first thing I thought was perf is this: is this going to be the same as the other, so any stats that show performance comparison between asp.Net MVC, web and blazer yeah? So so there’s a couple different comparisons that you could do that.

First of all, it’s not really an apples-to-apples, of course Harrison, and the reason is like I we talked about yesterday. Blazer is for your client web development needs, it doesn’t replace MVC, it doesn’t even do the same things that NBC and razor pages do. Those are server. Render technologies that use on the server Blazers meant to be used in the browser for a client web UI? So you don’t even do that when you want to do a server rendering you do that with MVC.

You don’t do that with laser at all, but there is some interesting, perfect characteristics of blazer that are worth mentioning: the Blazers, based on a differing algorithm. Where you render your components, it calculates a DIF and it applies it to the Dom that diffing algorithm has been highly optimized to be very, very efficient when you run it in web assembly. There are some known performance issues with any CPU intensive loads on our existing web assembly runtime right now.

That’s because, right now our dotnet webassembly runtime is doing ILO interpretation and it doesn’t have a jitter. It’s just interpreting the il on the fly and that can be slower, we’re working on that we’re working on supporting ahead of time competent compilation to assembly, which does give you back that, like native like performance, we haven’t had a preview of that yet. But we hope to have one as soon as we can shortly so that will hopefully address the performance problems of running an op laser web assembly in the browser when you’re running on the server you’re running on dotnet core, it’s superfast no performance problems at all.

All right, I think we have one more question. Yeah we have time for one more yeah. We do all right. Well, blazer support a per razer component, server-side web assembly configuration in one spot. I don’t know if I could parse that oh yeah write a Perl radius component, server-side, slash, there’s like so many pieces here. That’s why it’s such a good question. Ah, I think I like the way I choose to interpret this question.

You are wearing the jacket. You can do whatever you want. I think what this is asking is, you could imagine, maybe having a mixture of hosting models in the same app where this component is going to run on web assembly, but that component is going to run on the server, maybe for whatever reason it makes sense to Do that we don’t a first-class way of doing that today. It is something that people have asked us about right now, you either you pick one or the other you’re doing place or webassembly you’re doing blazer server.

It doesn’t seem like there should be anything blocking it, though, because, like I said laser weapon, sembly is just a bunch of static files. You could have a blaze of server app, you throw a bunch of blazer webassembly files into its dub-dub-dub root folder, and you can download those and use those, so it seems like you could get it to work. I haven’t actually done it yet, though, and it’s not an area we’ve really played around with, maybe that’s something that will we’ll look at going going forward.

Well, this has been amazing. We have coming up a short commercial break and afterwards

Western Ganga Dynasty

Western Ganga was an important ruling dynasty of ancient can attack in India, which lasted from about 350 to 1000 seee. They are known as West and gangers to distinguish them from the east and gangers who, in later centuries, ruled over Kalinga, not know disha.

The general belief is that the Western gangers began their rule during a time won. Multiple native clans asserted their freedom due to the weakening of the pallava empire in south india. A geopolitical event sometimes attributed to the southern conquests of Samudra Gupta. The Western Ganga sovereignty lasted from about 350 to 550 seee, initially ruling from kohler and later moving their capital to telecard on the banks of the kaveri river in modern mysore district.

After the rise of the Imperial shallow keys of barred army, the gang has accepted chalukya oval ship and fought for the cause of their overlords against the palaces of Kanchi. The challengers were placed by the rashtrakutas of manioc heta in 753 C, as the dominant power in the Deccan. After a century of struggle for autonomy, the Western Ganga’s finally accepted rashtrakuta oval ship and successfully fought alongside them against their foes.

The chola dynasty of dan Java in the late 10th century north of Tungabhadra River, the rashtrakutas, were replaced by the emerging western chalukya empire and the chola dynasty or renewed power south of the kaveri river. The defeat of the western gangers by Cholas around 1,000 resulted in the end of the ganga influence over the region. Though territorially a small Kingdom, the western Ganga contribution to polity culture and literature of the modern south can attack a region is considered important.

The western Ganga Kings showed benevolent tolerance to all faiths, but a most famous for their patronage toward Jainism, resulting in the construction of monuments in places such as shravanabelagola and Cambodia. Many classics were written on various subjects ranging from religion to elephant management, part-1 history. Multiple theories have been proposed regarding the ancestry of the founders of the western ganga dynasty prior to the 4th century. Some mythical accounts point to a northern origin, while theories based on epigraphy suggest. A southern origin. Historians who proposed the southern origin have further debated whether the early petty chieftains of the clan prior to their rise to power were natives of the southern districts of modern.

Can attacker the kong region in modern tamil nadu or of the southern districts of modern andhra pradesh? These regions encompass an area of the southern Deccan, where the three modern states merged geographically. It is theorized that the Ganga’s may have taken advantage of the confusion caused by the invasion of southern India by the northern kings. Another group prior to 350 and carved out a kingdom for themselves.

The area they controlled was called Ganga, Vardy and included regions of the modern districts of Mysore as Sam chamaraja Naga Tonka, Kola, manda and Bangalore in kinetic estate. At times, they also controlled some areas in modern Tamil Nadu Kong, the region’s starting from the sixth century rule of King have Anita and under Pradesh and are no regions starting from the middle of the fifth century. The founding king of the dynasty was kong, gana varma Matt Harvey, who made Cola his capital around 350 and ruled for about 20 years.

By the time of her arrival in 390, the Ganga’s had consolidated their Kingdom with telecare as their capital, then moved from the early capital. Kolja may have been a strategic one with the intention of containing the growing Kadamba power by 430. They had consolidated their eastern territories comprising modern Bangalore, Kohler and dunker districts and by 470 they had gained control over kong region in modern tamil nadu center akka, modern Chequamegon, LaRue and wheeler pun, Arta and panned out of regions comprising modern Haggard.

Some accounts suggest that in this power struggle, the Pallavas of kaanchi supported a vennett. Politically, the Ganga’s were theater Tories and close allies who also shared matrimonial relations with the shallow Keys. This is attested by inscriptions which describe their joint campaigns against their arch enemy, the Pallavas of Kanchi. From the year 725 onwards, the Ganga Vardi territories came to be called as the Ganga Vardy 96,000 Shan avati Sahasra vishaya, comprising the eastern and western provinces of modern south ken attacker King Street parasha fought the pallava king nanda Vaman Pallavi Mela successfully bringing Pen Kula cotton North archit, under his control temporarily, for which he earned the title berman rd a contest with the pand s of Madurai.

Over control of kong region ended in a ganga defeat, but a natterer mony between a ganga princess and rajasam happened. Yes, son brought peace, helping the gangers retained control over the contested region in 753, when the rashtrakutas replaced the bard army shall acquiesce as the dominant force in the Deccan. The gangers offered stiff systems for about a century King Shiva Mara. The second is mostly known for his walls with the rashtrakuta druvan Arivaca, his subsequent defeat and imprisonment, his release from prison and eventually his death on the battlefield, the ganga resistance continued through the reign of rashtrakuta Gove into the second I earned by 819.

A ganga resurgence gained them partial control over ganga Vardy under King Raja Mela, seeing the futility of waging war with the western Ganga rashtrakuta a mocha Varsha. I gave his daughter Chandra Ballabh in marriage to ganga, prince beautiful, a son of King Aragon, Juanita Marga. The gangers thereafter became staunch allies of the rashtrakutas, a position they maintained till the end of the rashtrakuta dynasty of Manea Quetta after an uneventful period, Butyrka ii ascended to the throne in 938, with the help of rashtrakuta Amogh hvar ii.

The chola dynasty, who was seeing a resurgence of power under raja, raja chola, I conquered ganga Vardi around the Year 1000, bringing the western ganga dynasty to an end.

There are two large areas of South can attack. A region came under Euler control for about a century. Part-2 administration, the western ganga administration, was influenced by principles stated in the ancient text. Arthashastra the prague governors mentioned in the ganga records held responsibilities similar to those of the village elders graeme of rider has mentioned by court. Elia succession to the throne was hereditary, but there were instances when this was overlooked.

The kingdom was divided into rashtra district and further into Vysya, consisting of possibly 1,000 villages and disa from the 8th century. The Sanskrit term Vysya was replaced by the candidate erm Nardo. Examples of this change is sin to nod to 8,000 and ponder do 6000, with scholars differing about the significance of the numerical suffix. They opined that it was either the revenue yield of the division computed in cash terms or the number of fighting men in the division or the number of revenue paying Hamlet’s in the division or the number of villages included in that territory.

Inscriptions have revealed several important administrative designations, such as Prime Minister Savard, Hikari, treasurer shrew Bhandari Foreign Minister, send high vigraha and chief minister mohammad hanate. All of these positions came with an additional title of commander Dandan aryaka. The narrative bovis were accountants and tax collectors at the Nardo level and sometimes function describes. The knowledge amigas were officers who organized and maintained defense. At the Nardo level, the prabho constituted a group of elite people drawn together to witness land grants and demarcation of land boundaries. The governors who appear most often in inscriptions were the backbone of medieval polity of the southern karnataka region.

They were landlords and local elite whom the state utilized their services to collect taxes, maintain records of land ownership, bear witness to grants and transactions, and even raise militia were required. Inscriptions that specify land grants, rights and ownership were descriptive of the boundaries of demarcation using natural features such as rivers, streams, water blogs, hillocks, large boulders, layout of the village location of forts coat if any in the proximity, irrigation, canals, temples, tanks and even shrubs and large Trees also included, was the type of soil.

The crops meant to be grown and tanks or wells to be excavated for irrigation inscriptions mentioned wetland, cultivable land, forests and wasteland. There are numerous references to Hamlet’s Palli belonging to the Hunter communities who resided in them bidet Poli from the sixth century onwards. The inscriptions refer to feudal lords by the title Arase the OSIS were either Brahmins or from tribal background who controlled hereditary territories, paying periodic tribute to the king, the Ville of Valley, who will loyal bodyguards of the royalty, were fierce warriors under oath ville.

They moved with the royal family and were expected to fight for the master and be willing to lay down their lives in the process. If the king died, the valley valley were required to self-immolate on the funeral pyre of the master part three economy. The Ganga Vardy region consisted of the MAL nad region, the plains by lucy-mae and the semi mal Nant, with lower elevation and rolling hills. The main crops of the mal nad region were paddy betel leaves cardamom and pepper, and the semi mal nad region, with its lower altitude produced rice.

Millet such as rocky and corn pulses oil seats, and it was also the base for cattle farming. The plains to the east, where the flat lands fed by Kaveri, Tungabhadra and vetiver tea rivers were cultivations of sugarcane. Paddy coconut are egg, not a decker. Tata betel leaves plantain and flowers vara Ravenna, where common sources of irrigation were excavated tanks, wells, natural ponds and water bodies.

In the catchment area of dams, katha inscriptions attesting to irrigation of previously uncultivated lands seemed to indicate an expanding agrarian community. Soil types mentioned in records of black soil, Hiromi Nia in the Sint 8000 territory and two red soil care. Bhaiya manu cultivated land was of three types: wetland dry, land and, to a lesser extent, garden land with paddy being the dominant crop of the region.

Wetlands were called Kalani gold near Manu or near Ponyo, and was specifically used to denote patio land requiring standing water. The fact that pasture all economies were spread throughout Ganga Vardi region comes from references to cowards. In many inscriptions, the terms go: Sahasra a thousand cows gasps, Sara owner of cows, go saucy. Donor of cows, go deep coward s, go sosser protector of cows.

A test to this inscriptions indicates. Ownership of cows may have been as important as cultivable land and that the may have existed a social hierarchy based on this inscriptions mentioned cattle raids attesting to the importance of the pastoral economy, destructive raids, assaults on women, pen, derrida, ankle abduction of women by Baris and To drives all of which indicated the existing militarism of the age lands that were exempt from taxes were called manye and sometimes consisted of several villages.

They were granted by local chieftains without any reference to the overlord indicating a decentralized economy. These lands, often given two heroes, who perished in the line of duty, were called by Lori T or Khalid. When such a grant was made for the maintenance of temples at the time of consecration, it was called till ret. Some types of taxes on income were carrot or and Takara internal taxes, but Kota gifts due to the king.
