Today we are going to talk about the aerial matrix that is tensing a product portfolio or a strategic business unit. What are the model look like and how it works? It is for the board that is newly formed and aging whether it is strong or the weak business either it is a younger, a dominant. Anyone can use it strategies. Yes, business life cycle phases.
There are four phases: embryonic growth maturity, anti-aging business you need is in the youthful stage means it is an embryonic stage did need a strong financial support, because profit is not releasing yet. Coming to the second point, growth here, your business company takes off and showing a rapid growth expansion either it is from the front end or the back. Can you have? You are only concentrating on the need of production because you have to satisfy for the customer needs at that time in the growth figures coming to maturity and the aging stage maturity.
In this stage, you are concentrate on the brand positioning because satis, if occation is over now it time to maximize the profits. It is the time that you should concentrate on the brand value and brand positioning coming to the point aging here. Your sales, faraway stages of the profit harvested and computation may leave the market or they are trying to shift to the new trend. So it time to modify or time to change rates of the companies coming to next, we are going to talk about the strength of the company strategic business unit.
Here also, there are five phases: one is dominant, strong, favorable, tenable and weak in the dominant phase. You are a market leader and you are the monopolistic coming to the second. Strong strong phase is what having a strong force with the small number of companies, but there should be a competitor, but ok, you can make money in those competitor. Also, yes, you will be in the profit. This phase is called as a strong phase coming to.
Third, there is a favorable. What is favorable, it is a very fragmented market. There is no dominant player, there is no rivals, there is no clear header. This is what we called a favorable phase next enable 10 a bar is what company serves in each with its limited geographical area or maybe with a special product coming to next? It is a weak, weak phase. What is the weak phase? Poor financial status and very small position: this is what we called a very weak phase of a company success subdivision strategies.
We are going to discuss the six strategies for the week and staging business. These six shelter days will help you to better life cycle of the companies. One is the market Chaterjee that is moving into your new geography or developing the different segments building a new product. It will benefit. You, second, is the products energy launching the new product, finding ways of differentiating the product positioning the product against the need of a specific segment.
It will also be PQ, that is the profit product strategy management and the system strategies here. Finding the process that give you a competitive advantage, such as the production at low cost betterment in the customer service for these technology strategies, that is, investing in the research and development, to ensure that product portfolio is full of the new products with a high market. Appeal placement strategies, building a customer loyalty to rebuild the business and obtain the greater share of the valid or, at the higher prices, operational strategies, improving the logistic on gaining a competitive advantage through the foster deliveries and our more efficient operation.
Altium Arun action, the model in action, a company should apply area in the three steps. One is determine the position of the business in its life cycle where the company life cycle exists means either. It is exist in the embryonic stage or maturity stage or aging stage. So you should get a clear by following these four questions. One is how big is the market? How many companies supply the market? How big are those companies? How old are those companies? These are the four questions you have to clear and after this clearance, you should ask a question that a large number of small and the young company or businesses indicate as an embryonic stage point number to a small number of large companies suggests maturity and old age.
You should get clear of these two points. Step number two determine the competative position of the business, so this should be easier than determining the life stage. A company in the strong competitive position will have a distinctive product offer or a command premium prices. He enjoy a significant market share, good growth and a high profitability. These are the things which you can evaluate very easily than evaluating the stages of life cycle plot.
The position of the business on the mock matrix means it is, might find that it’s standing in two or three different positions. That is either it is standing in embryonic stage already standing on adult phase. Also, so you can’t decide in these questions. New are a growing company with a strong or a dominant position. If this is the case, then it am to defend this position is maturity or ageing company with a strong dominant position, it aim to defend the position and grow with the market or consider harvesting the profits.
Third Point: new are growing company with a weak position in the market, so this type of companies find their niche in which you can survive or if the business is not profitable, consider withdrawing from the market shear or aging company with a weak position in the market. It isn’t possible to improve the competitive position so consider withdrawing from the market. It is well and good for the company, it is the loss rate so analyzing.
These are the four points, and these are the steps that you have to follow before applying aerial into the matrix of the company yeah. Thank you very much for your support. Let’s take share and subscribe forget for more upcoming articles.
Starting a business is not easy! Think about who will be working on your digital image. Hiring a good webmaster will help!
How much time do I have Patrick this like when people start passing out in the back? Okay, so so I’ll try to make it quick, because all the cert half of us at least have major problems with ADHD, so which is just like me, I’m good. So I want to talk about how to win an internet and some practical ways.
I am an engineer myself and I kind of stumbled upon branding and blogging if you will as an accident, but it has grossly accelerated my career and so even as a still a very young person. I have accomplished a lot and it all has been directed back to the messaging that I’ve created around my person and the work that I’ve done. And so it’s interesting to me. Incredibly, talented people but they’ve been unable to communicate that in a way that affords them opportunities.
That really matter. Does that make sense a lot of times you you’re stopped at the gate, because you just know knows who you are and stuff like that, so I’ve been lucky enough. Really it is luck to stumble through some of this, and hopefully I can give you some of those tips so that you can become more successful as an engineer software developer and perhaps even entrepreneur. You know how to even spell that try dome subsystem stats.
I’ve made a living off of software engineering. I love it. I’ve been developing software for 17 years. I started as a 15 year old for a dal 30 company johnson Johnson. I wasn’t even allowed to really. I think I there was an intern, but I was building their enterprise applications and their marketing sites for their global push into Japan, which is really cool. Remember those acuvue colored contacts remember goes out.
That was a hot back in the mid-90s. That was me. I was making those in active website, so that was awesome, Flashman emc a script. What, on married nine years, I’ve had six ventures. Five exits have two masters degrees. I have two girls, I don’t know what that one is, but I think I’ve have infinite failures. Tons of failures and tons more opportunity, I’m an angel investor, I’ve 39 portfolio companies.
So if you need money, I have some. This is my most important start up. My wife and my two girls who has family here. I’ve ever had to endure that like day long photo sheet – and this is like an hour eight you’re like I – want to absolutely kill myself but ends up becoming like the best one, that’s kind of like a metaphor for life. Isn’t it where you’re at your wits end and then everything comes in to clear so anyway, I love my favorite picture of all time.
Three-Year-Old and saying she just broke her leg and he’s seven year old is the princess. These are some of the companies. I’ve worked for, the CIA was really up yeah when I was an executive had a Fox News curb when I was 25. I have no idea what the hell they were thinking, but that was really fun for a while. I really got my start as an entrepreneur in 2007. My mom clipped this piece of paper, of course, and sent it to me just like you’re on the cover of austin american-statesman.
I was like oh embarrass me, i’m at work, so she clipped that now is my first major venture as a kind of a entrepreneur. Now I lead the iron yard, which is a intensive code school and I am hiring also rubyists, so these rubyists not only have to be in love with their craft, but half they’ll be in love with teaching other people. So if you’re interested, I pay really well, I give almost four months of paid vacation.
So if that sounds badass, you should talk to me. We teach JavaScript objective-c and Ruby on Rails, the iron yard, calm and Lara is our community manager she’s, also a rails girl and she’s a real person, so she can talk to her as well. She’s awesome and her husband is awesome too, and he’s somewhere. Andy areas are you get Hubbard? I also have the venture funded iOS app in the store called press/graham, so I love both open source and proprietary software, so I still hack at night.
I love that and I’m building a desktop application for OSX. That’s coming out in July, so that’s going to be fun and that’s very much related to digital publishing. I’m just completely obsessed, I’m a georgia, tech grad really lucky. I failed my way through. I just started with cs, but I failed out my freshman year. I was a douche like total ass, but they let me back in an icon my way back in, and I’ve got two graduate degrees here, one in education, alright, so after that, so who cares about personal branding? What we’re going to start is with personal branding, is kind of a meta-level.
Why why this is important, why you should care and then I’ll walk you through some practical things, to encourage you to actually execute against that? Why I love memes, so I forgive me in advance. That’s just my wife. She thinks that’s all I speak and emoticons and memes, but after nine years that’s kind of like telepathy anyway, alright. So why does this matter? As I said so it’s about competition.
Really! It’s about being competitive, why personal branding matters is because it lets you be more competitive as an individual as much as we love community as much as you guys or peers – and you know this is a community here. You are competing for jobs and, what’s nice about being a software, the software world is it’s a big ocean, so in most cases all of us are going to be well employed for the rest of our lives.
I love this industry. I can’t imagine being at any other one, so you’ll never have a problem, but it’s especially challenging when you’re starting out or you’re trying to rebuild a career or trying to engage in a new technology stack or something. When I started teaching myself objective-c about a year and a half ago, I don’t know anyone, I didn’t know what I was doing so I wanted to be competitive and it helped so it helps create more signal and less noise around you as a person and the Fact is that we all do this.
We use Google eyes a significant signal to who we are as people, whether it’s right or wrong. That’s really not i’m not trying to qualify that, but you’ve done this. You, google yourself, sometimes maybe too much you, google, your peers! Your colleagues, potential employers and – and you know this to be true as well – they google you they look for you. They look for signals about who you are as a software engineer, but also the signals around your person, your character.
Are you a person who gets high and drunk on friday nights and are they willing to risk to pay you despite those character, flaws and so for Google’s sake in many ways again not qualifying whether this is good or bad I’d rather stating? What is you have to consider personal branding as a part of your strategy if you will and again not a super fan, but it really has accelerated a lot of my life. So the good point, then, is you have to be a little bit different.
You have to give Google and the other signals something to talk about something to write home about, but the difference is you have to do it on purpose? The fact is all of us, especially if we have gift or profiles. We have signals already. The question is: have you been intentional about those things? Have you actually created positive signals around your character, the work that you do, your passions as a developer, a particular angle – maybe you love some scaffolding, technology and you’re like yeah.
Is that a positive signal for an employer and have you done intentionally as the point is one of control be in the driver’s seat? Metaphorically again, it’s not a question of if, if you have a personal brand or some signals around your name and your person, not a question of if it is a question of how and how good and of what quality and how consistent does any of this make Sense whatsoever, hey, I do enjoy hearing myself talk now, so so you have an entire opportunity to be entirely epic.
You may not have ever thought hmm. I should really think about the signals that I’m creating out on the interwebs, but now as an opportunity to really start fresh, especially for our students in our cohorts in the iron yard. They have a very unique opportunity to make a major pivot into software world, and they can start entirely fresh. That’s why we require all of our students to blog, because a blog allows them to control from end to end the messaging around their new career.
Excuse me. So if at one point they were a florist or a Starbucks barista, which are real stories, they are now able to craft a message around this new brand, I’m a new junior level, software engineer and rails or objective-c, and I’m looking for an opportunity and strings things Begin to happen so social media, obviously the point around social media – I guess, is just to choose wisely. I used to be a super fan of social media.
Now I absolutely hate it. I don’t have a facebook page or profile they’re nice to keep an account, because I mean how I mean how many of our clients have asked us to create. Facebook integrations like every single one right, so yeah have account to create. You know to use your API and stuff and I’ll very close to quitting twitter too, but I’m working through that. The point is to choose wisely. So one point I had tons, but there is something very special that happens when you choose one or two and you go really deep.
A couple years ago I made a decision to cut all ties to all major social networks except Twitter, and I jumped from like eight or nine ten thousand followers on Twitter to over a hundred thousand within a few months. It was an incredible experiment. I’m now hovering around 189 under ninety thousand, and it would be a absolute life. I didn’t tell you that that makes an incredible difference, but not only for me for my companies for the portfolio companies that I oversee one tweet from me allows them to enter into spaces that they may not have otherwise earned on their own right and that’s powerful.
I’m not saying that I like that. In fact, I really I really don’t like it, but it’s an incredible tool in your digital tool belt. If you will to leverage for your career, so choose wisely. If you actually, google me and you go to images, this is what you see now after blogging for 13 years. I control generally the capital along like Google’s indexing, and all of these images will land on a blog, which is what I’ll get to a little bit later in this presentation.
As you can see how powerful this is as a controlling tool for the message around Who I am what I’m doing, what I’m involved in and the work and the stuff that I’d like for you to see, so you click any of these links. They’ll go to my blog, which are 12 or two clicks away from the about page, which links to my properties, my investments, the work that I’m doing the things, I’m a building, etc, etc.
It’s a straight blog of opportunity for me, it’s taken in long time, but it’s powerful. So here’s an introspective moment for you if we were to extra stew the same exact exercise. What would show up and is that good? Now, i’m not here to answer that question, but I mentor high school students occasionally when people, let me – and I mean these kids are just dumb. Okay, I just I constantly tell them you are making yourself unemployable.
You know that right, you’re, underage drinking, you know snot, that smoking is a sin or anything bad, but that just looks tacky right. Who cares if you’re straight A student they’re going to Google your ass? And it’s just really? It’s really sad. So I try to work with them on that and Alyssa name, but whatever the point is that Google is a powerful signal for employers and for contractors and for organizations.
I know for everyone, who’s raised their hand, who’s hiring and certainly me who’s looking to hire. I will google you and I will see some interesting things which might explain why you get her, don’t get jobs. Who knows I mean who knows so? The idea, then, is you need to create some base station some operation of control, to maximize the signals that you create for employers and stuff. Like that again, I figured this out by accident.
I stumbled across this just over consistent blogging, so I didn’t this. Wasn’t I didn’t set out for this, and – and Here I am standing before you as a badass – I I lucked my way into this. So blogging is how I use my base station. I joined twitter in 2008. I just told you that story and have been lucky to gain a good following, and I leverage that, as best as I can i’m very intentional without as well, i’m not there to be your friend, i’m not there to have a private conversation.
I’m certainly not there to date, I’m there for marketing, I’m there for message, expansion. I know unashamed about that intent. It’s just the way it is. Although ninety percent of what I talk about is random, just like most of us, but if you were to look at my last company and then I exited last last year, we would tweet out very systematically and programmatically on thursdays at eleven and we would tag those Things and track those metrics, we were selling digital product and we just crossed a million in revenue, and Thursdays was our hearty day.
We had about a quarter million followers globally as an organization, and we tweet that out. We track those and would sell tens of thousand dollars with the product. We would don’t get then go to the local bar get smashed and see how much we learned over that hour period. That was awesome and so unashamed about it. Twitter is marketing, and I don’t know that the social stuff there might be some social media gurus here.
I’m sorry I’m offending you, but I don’t believe that all right. So then, what’s the magic sauce, what what’s the secret sauce outside of the absolute luck that I’ve had over the last 12 13 years of doing this and its execution? There’s nothing else. I don’t care how many blogs you go to hubspot marketing Mashable, all those marketing blogs that tell you tips and tricks and whatever the only thing that matters – and you know this, especially as developers is, did you write that code or not? Did you execute against the requirements or not, and so the only thing that I have to suggest for you guys is to execute if you’re going to do this, do it don’t just think about it cogitate for a bit, and then you know go to your next Meetup actually go, do it that’s a picture of my wedding band, which I have lost, but that’s not.
The message message is commitment. This is commitment that, outside of execution, commit a commitment to it. Matters that executing once is not enough. Committing to a long term. Is everything you know that again as developers? The only reason why you’ve been successful in your career is you’re exercising that development muscle, you’re learning you’re going to meet ups you’re going to the new intermediate meet up wit, just sounds really bad ass plug you know continue exercise just like exercise need to remember that, And last tip, if anything outside of execution commitment is make it personal, this is my daughter – were teach I’m teasing our rails right now, she’s seven at this really cool article of her making her first like like making her first line and in a heading enter and Just her light eyes light up, she’s like oh, my god, I’m like she said, I’m a coder um.
So I captured that on article – and I just probably one of the best articles and then, of course, her sister runs around the edge of the wall and says my foot, my foot um, but seeing you know for for this year old enough to remember basic. That’s where I learned like you, didn’t, have this responsiveness of being able to see something and then seeing this reaction, this the psyche of this feedback loop.
If you will, because you just kind of guests and hoped it happened, but for her to see to hit a command and then to see something happen on the screen is just I never want that to get old that we live in a wild wild world, it. So, anyway, plus the third thing is just make personal, you have to give a about what you’re doing again. You know that that’s that’s fairly obvious. All right, you do those three things guaranteed kick ass and you win the internet all right so on to the second part of this strange, but something in presentation.
I’m appreciate that awkward laugh all right. So now, we’ve kind of worked through the. Why, if you haven’t been convinced, maybe you’re just so much of a badass that you don’t need to, but for a lot of us, even the slightest execution against a blogging and branding will take you a long long way so now we’ll go into the execution part. Some of the practicalities of making this happen, you guys are smart, so then go through this pretty fast.
So why blogging talk about the branding federer cheddar? The point, though, for me, is that accelerated everything I’ll be 32 this year and I have done a ton of stuff and had a load of fun. I’ve made more money than I need to, but I’m just 32, and I just I marvel at that. I never take that for granted. I have a very distinct I’m in touch with my mortality. If you will, I don’t know when that happened, but I just knew when I was young i’m going to die soon.
I better get this thing going blogging again. Helped me it helped accelerate a lot of the stuff and I’m not the most talented engineer. I self-admittedly I’m not that talent. I just stumbled upon the ability to communicate the work that I was doing so that people mostly dumb people, but they chose me for opportunities. Instead of others, and maybe that’s what you’re missing so I belong for 13 years, there was one year I blogged 3248 times in a calendar year.
That’s an average of nine, almost nine times a day, talk about obsession, but I still love it and I blog at least once a day. Typically, it’s about two times a day, and I make it it’s it’s a habit. It’s a it’s a habitual thing. It’s part of my process, if you will but the point, is it accelerated everything in my life and I’m very, very thankful for it blogging back then, though, was updating a static HTML file through a server and then time stamping it in reverse chronological order, like you Know with horizontal rules, flaming, of course, and crazy gifts, but I’ll go gifts are now come back alright.
So why? Let me count the ways. So here are some things that blogging has actually done explicitly for me. It has helped me get partners. One of the partners of my previous company was actually a comment on my blog five years. Prior and we’ve started a conversation, the comet layer. I thought it was a troll, so I blacklisted his IP. He somehow got around that and anyway long story short. I moved my wife and our kids into his basement to bootstrap that company, and that was awesome, so we went from blog comment or to partner and then an exit.
It’s helped me raise venture capital not directly, but it is certainly helped me engage with people that I have no right of engaging with for those in the venture space Brad Feld is a household name. He has commented on my blog and we actually started our accelerator program of iron yard out of the techstars network, so your typical acceleration, three months 20 grand percent equity and then carry on the back.
It has given me office space. This is wild, then investment company on Australia, Hong Kong, made their first purchase here in Atlanta, the old riches building next to underground atlanta that strange place, and then they just they needed someone to literally be in the building. They googled co-working atlanta. And if you, google, that my blog will come up near the top – and I just had canvas and written about all the coding spots in atlanta, so they literally contact and cold contacted me and said, looks like you know what you’re doing what if you brought your Company to our space will give you 50 grand to build out the space and we’ll let you stay there for a year.
I was like, let me think so, literally office space like awesome, we spent most of it on a epic 8-bit neural, throw a local artist. So I totally blew all that cash on something really stupid. I’m an editor for Wiley publishers. I don’t recommend that because they pay like but being an editor for the biggest technical publisher in the world does hold clout and they contacted me because I had written about certain series on my blogs.
Well enough that it looked like. I actually knew what I was talking about. My last book was servers for dummies. You know those dummies series, those yellow and black books. You see at Barnes & Noble, so I edited the latest web hosting for dummies book. I mean all right who cares? Uh, clients and jobs, obviously I’m tons of opportunities, and then freedom, I think, is the most important one. It really gave me really gave me opportunity to say yes to the right jobs and no to the ones that were just playing lame.
You know, especially if you’re contracting, as many of you are sometimes you just have to say yes to everything, especially if you’re starting out but blogging. For me, at least, you know and directly gave me so many such a large pipeline – that I was able to create some judiciousness around the decisions that I was making like an a cool gig. It’s cool projects. No, I don’t. I don’t really need that.
One. I’m sure i’ll get another solicitation, so freedom allowed me to have a little bit more rest around the work that I did and Lord knows how many of you need a break all right. It’s my favorite picture. Let’s just sit there all right! No, no! No! That one dude that was legit um, I should have Ellen’s legit, I mean so anyway, so it sounds all like mystically rain, rainbow unicorn ish. So here are some excuses in myths.
He’s probably conjured up if you’ve been ever entertained about writing. I hope dispel those in a few minutes or so and encourage you to really really knock it out. Three three major excuses in myths, time content or readers. I don’t have enough time. I don’t know what to write about. No one’s going to read my you. Don’t have to raise your hand, but I know most of you have thought that she’s from Atlanta right, sweet brown ain’t, nobody got time for bronchitis, god.
I saw that article a thousand times, though so no time no time, I’m telling you that 15 minutes a week is all you need 15 minutes a week, so count all those extra YouTube articles that you read how many times you spend on reddit. You know hacker news, I mean: let’s, let’s keep adding it, you can do 15 minutes a week, that’s just one post today. I think that alone will make you stand apart and just think about it.
All things being equal, you as a developer among a laundry list of other developers right and your stack ranked against them as hiring managers come or whatever, and they, Google, all ten of you and your competitors except you’ve, been writing consistently about no Jas or skala or Redis or whatever you know, whatever the flavor of the month is whatever you’re you’re just blank jonesing on right. Now you have a higher and more positive signal about the work that you do.
Then your competitors, all it is it’s just one signal of many. Of course you have to go in an interview and not look like you’re hungover, but it’s a positive signal, and sometimes that’s all you need. Is that one entrance? Many of you know if I could just get an interview. I can nail it every time. If you don’t get interview, and so we can get there, then you can close it schedule. It. That’s easy! You schedule.
A number of things in your life apply this to blogging. It takes time to build a habit. I know for 13 years it’s still struggle, but you have to look at it at an investment, so sweet brown. You got time to this all right. I get away with this because I’m Asian no content what so this again is another myth. You know what do I write about? Well, you start with your experience. I’m just write about what you’ve done, which I know sounds egomaniacal.
It is you’ll just have to get over that talk about your experience as a developer, but things that you like don’t like developers, especially talented ones, are highly opinionated full stop highly opinionated people and a lot of them are jerks, but that’s great stuff, because aren’t you Attracted to people who have opinions like who just look at your circle of friends, they’re, not bland people, they are people with opinions may be shared.
Opinions may be bins that you don’t equally share it that you like anyway. I don’t know why we don’t apply this to the hiring scenario right. Why would I? Why would I hire an onion ated person, which is a boring person? I hire hylian pinion ated people who love what they do and are willing to duke it out when we come to a technology decision. I love that. I think that’s cool, so you are opinionated.
Why don’t you just man up or woman up, as that phrase want to be gender-neutral? Do it and just share that opinion that you lose nothing against a crank against the rest of the in a development field? You have an opinion. You have the courage. That really is it the courage to share that opinion, that’s attractive to a to a hiring manager, that’s attractive to people who want to hire you Wow geez, he really came off strong about you know note is when I’m kind of geeking out kind of from the Back burner, wow, that’s cool like he really likes his stuff.
That’s. I think I want to talk with that person that gal code snippets google loves that stuff. I don’t know why, but makes sense copy and paste code what you’re working on I mean. How long would it take you to say? Hey totally got stuck on this line right here and this object won’t compile. But here it is publishing. I mean I think, that’s 30 seconds and you’re done you’re good you’re good. Do you have published? You are a digital creator, you’re badass and then images are so easy.
I mean it is so easy I mean as superficial as that might sound it’s attached to your name. Its content, regardless take a picture of your workstation, probably remove some of the garbage before you take this, but now that that junk works. This has no relevance to the next slide. I just like it, no readers, so that’s the second myth. Here’s the third myth. No one’s going to read my stuff, your co-workers will for sure, because why they don’t know what it is, but they intuitively know you just became more competitive.
I want to know what my co-workers doing to advance their career. Why would they do that? We’re going to look at you sideways, it’s going to be an awkward water-cooling moment, but you can be like just trying out my game, your peers, so you’re, not in the you know typical work environment. Your peers will definitely take note, let’s say whoa whoa whoa. I don’t like node, why is it talking about node organizations? Obviously we’ll take note as they look for you and the Internet is weird.
That’s probably why I have this. The internet is just a weird place in terms of the blog here’s, a great metaphor, it’s kind of like a crack house. You know there are multiple entry points you walk in and you have no idea where they came from, but they’re there. So we’ll just stop that metaphor stops right there, but the internet is like that and just you just have no idea who who enters it. Just like some of the stories I shared about the free office space, I have no idea why they would do that.
But when I told my three partners: hey we’re moving downtown next to the underground atlanta and a 3,000 square foot facility for free, no one was like yeah. I don’t know about that, we’re up and like Duluth man I was like you know. It was wack all right, so I have completely demystified your three excuses or myths, and now you’ve accepted the challenge right so excuses. No more here are some options for publishing: WordPress tumblr, subtle, medium.
Com, Jekyll octa press, the last two being developer centric. I don’t care her. I’m not dogmatic about any of these. I like WordPress, because I had built a business around that, but I am the last person to tell you which one to choose just choose one who cares you want to use github pages. Do that. That would be a great place, except traffic goes down by 30, almost 40 % views github pages LSU do a crazy rewrite on the URL Bing.
So just be careful about get up pages a card execute, so you have to commit commit schedule and in profit whatever that profit might be, and maybe very soon it may take a long time to create this online equity. I don’t know, but if you start today and the rest of these people in this room, do not I guarantee a year from now, you will be in a very different place than the ones who did not like. Oh, I was building this deck and they like this afternoon like and I was just giggling.
My team was like what’s going on like that means all right. So finally, the cap, this off, there’s a large opportunity cost. If you don’t try this there’s a small personal cost, I just asked for 15 minutes per week. You can do that so large opportunity costs small personal costs. I just don’t see how many of you could argue with that. It could very well transform your future. Give you options and opportunities that you may not have entertained before and that’s really exciting, it’s exciting and also scary, to think that there’s some opportunities that are available to you that you’re.
Just not aware of that. So I could I struggle with like acute anxiety who, if I sit on that too long, let me go take my meds and then you just don’t know. I think there are stranger things that have happened with the internet, so you know take it for a spin. All right, I’m done your turn to ask some questions: yeah. What’s up bro you who can be fooled so easily, so ba matured um take on spending time working the haunting things I’d say years back a little over 50 or more you’re.
Acting with oh yeah. That’s a great question I would say, take the same principle as I shared earlier is: choose wisely. You know some of you guys have some killer stack overcoat profiles. Some of you have some amazing github commits, like you know how many times in a row right mine, looks terrible, because most of my stuff is proprietary. You know private, so I can’t use it as a positive signal for in my career.
I don’t need it as well, but again choose wisely, where you’re going to spend some time to really invest, and it does make a difference. You know imagine curating making a little bit more sexy those profiles and it just looks so much more classy right compared to someone who doesn’t really thinking proactively about those profiles but choose wisely because you don’t have infant amount on and then try to go.
Try to do it really well um. Your gains on split profiles is, for instance, I currently new working kind of to inward work in an actual industry and then still an ID, but then I’ve also been working on some buildings from my application. So I’m kind of curious yeah, the one of them is kind of a web developer, rails, Django, yeah, no personality and the other one’s kind of a corporate work, old data warehousing architecture.
So I kind of hate myself for my first job was with a pearl ASP and Oracle. And yes, I hated myself too. So this is just again in my opinion, I just still. I don’t know how to do split personalities. I I am one person and it’s it’s too difficult for me to isolate and segregate myself, and I think I’ve just learned to be comfortable with that mashup if you will, and so whether I’m talking about my family or you know our portfolio or my my company Are I mean whatever it just kind of jumbles there together and I I feel ok with people finding that stuff, but it really is a functional decision, because I don’t have enough time like to manage multiple accounts and then try to create these alternate personas and talk About myself as a third person, so I just have chosen for me to just I’ve – got one blog and that’s the way I’m going to execute, but it also is a competitive advantage.
You have different worlds which that you can combine, and I don’t know how. But there’s something very fascinating about people who bring very different perspectives into engineering. In fact, a lot of the staff that I’ve hired, even in my current company, had come from liberal arts backgrounds and man. They are just brilliant in ways that I am NOT, and I love that and it gives them flavor and that gives them depth and we’ve got a Norse mythology.
She speaks four languages gal who does Ruby for us and she’s so cool. You know so and then she speaks Gaelic or something so I was driving home. The other day is like her Irish Irish Gaelic or something some dialect. Something right he’s like speak to me like in that, whatever that is, as we are stuck on four hundred and it’s just like wow, you know but he’s an engineer but she’s interesting right.
You know one of the things that we we coach our investments and as they prepare for their pitch events. As we say, the goal is not to convince. The goal is to be remembered. That’s it because you’re not going to make they’re not going to sign you to check there right after a couple beers they might, but the goal is to get the follow up. The goal is for you to remember it enough for them to say out of the 20 pitches.
I salt tonight that guy’s a badass. I can’t exactly remember what product it was. It was probably another photo sharing app great, just like mine, but but man he was cool. He was memorable. I we should go. We should go, hang out with them at happy hour, so in that way I think combining the distinct parts of who you are your experience. Your background, your experiences is very positive. I don’t. I don’t see that as a negative and any any area, um whatsoever.
Great question, though they might well, is just sit right there. The Internet is scary, Oh yep question nothing day, my back fired 10 years from now I mean honestly, who knows honestly, who knows, and but but the people in this room, I think, are talented enough to pivot and maneuver because we’re the ones who are creating thing. You know we are the, we are engineering it. It is a weird reality and you may have never thought about it, but if you’re a software engineer, you are literally changing the perspectives of millions of how they perceived technology and human interaction.
It’s a wild thing. If you spit us in on it too long, it gets really scary, because you’re changing the way that people are perceiving their engagement with inanimate objects and data. I never thought about it’s a wild thing. There’s a lot of money related there! That’s why? I think about that often, but you are, you are creating these realities for people and that’s crazy. So I mean who knows so if it’s broken like social will, just go fix it.
You know the answers. I don’t know sorry good question, though, or my daughter will fix it, he’ll be like hey Roen. You got to fix this, like your dad looks like a total ass. This is going on youtube, so she’ll figure out a way to race. It yeah. So, while being in traffic without my 23rd, there was a there’s, a hacker news, article about if you use github pages, it’s based on the page load, because they use a spam system internally, that has to route your DNS throughout a really complex system which elongate the Time between the visitor and the actual page view, I’m oh really simplifying that, but since page rank is based on speed as a major signal, you actually ranks blower yeah.
So so you might as well pusher octave press blog to a good Weebly for wickes knows can’t come today, but I love stock images 0. So one workaround is to not use like a pen not host the beta site. Anything rights – that’s right, like domain so instead of like example.Com you’ve got about that example. That will work around and the reasoning is just as you can’t see name domain. So you have to pin it feel like one specific IP in that I you know, Andy stop.
Making me look stupid, it’s a tough thing if the DNS back whatever loud. What’s funny thing is it’s not actually a heart? The standard isn’t supported many implementations, including by do support it, though we still don’t use it, because it’s not the standard there. You can run into some issues, whoa fight, you use a cname at the apex and you like route meal like that, gets through these guys around one, and it would not recommend no yeah.
You can google it so we can have a blog board now yeah, like crown one coming at some position, yeah you ever. Have anyone go straight for your guests waters, ooh! That’s a great question answer is now for my personal blog. No, I have had some guests authors and it was noted that they were doing like a guest post or something but vast majority over. The is just my own thoughts yeah. It has a place in this in your in a strategy.
I guess it’s not in you know, because the the win of someone else writing content, for you is actually a loss for me because it takes me more management, time to copy and paste they’re really up HTML into the system and like just I’ll, do myself. You’re deluding the brain yeah that would yeah whatever yeah I mean. Yes, I think so, hey. I don’t know your personal policy for deleting or editing for you just know.
I don’t have a policy or a strategy. I leave all of them there because once they’re there, like google, has indexed that to kingdom come and wayback machine ain’t escaping wayback machine um. So but here’s here’s I mean here’s the honest truth is: we have all changed as individuals and matured as adults. So the things that we believe today are not the same things that we believed even a couple years ago and I think that’s okay.
I think we were oftentimes scared of our past and some have some weird pass. I mean reason I left at lan. I want to graduate texts coz. I have too many girlfriends here I mean like that was just weird, but now I’m back and I don’t know where they are anyway, TMI weird Asperger’s, right here, sorry uh, but I think that’s, okay. I think it just shows that you’re human, that you change and evolve and how many times have you guys pivoted or look back at some of the software that you build your like, oh revolting, like and there’s this gag reflex and you’re, like, oh god, don’t know.
I mean that happens. Like that’s cool. Can I answer column for a question shirts. I do blogging to on some of mind if I look at the analytics and there’s certain pages that are just like gathered, our blog put some time, but it’s a landing page. I mean it’s: it’s like the number two entry on some keyboard at Google and so people in those cases. I declare them in the category of being what I call on the blog and maintain posts and its marked very clearly like, and it will have a changes for like okay, the version change, so we updated.
I have to do the example and i’ll do a log and because, even though it’s a blog post is this living thing because people are hitting it like, sometimes hundreds per day, it would be a disservice to have it be sailed, information, and so, let’s just look At your analytics inside with right as long as you’re, clear though you know it’s not like you’re being edit or delete it’s honest on your blog yeah time, stamping it that’s a great tip the number one blog post of all time on John do my personal blog Is the is a blog post, titled top ten creative notebooks, and I so I carry around as as digital as I am, I think, there’s something very fundamental to to analog, and so I love I love these things.
I all my ideas and notes and scribble scrabble czar there, and so I’ve experimented with creative notebooks over time, and so I wrote hey. These are the top ten like creative notebooks that have ever used going that and action method, a bunch of other weird stuff. It has tens of thousands of views a day and it took me a while to figure this out, but then I added um affiliate links for those yeah. I get a check from amazon every month from that one blog post.
It’s ridiculous and you know my life’s like so so I just I know, because I got a text message on my device today. I ordered this portable boombox right like who needs that, but from amazon, so they send you a text messages, don’t know like sighs text message in my wife, like hey, there’s this really strange like yellow and black package. It’s it’s a portable stereo system. I don’t really need one, but I think it’d be cool she’s like who paid for that.
It’s like Amazon, so Amazon allows us to have date, nights and stuff like that. So that’s going to cool anyway! We’re sort! Yes, oh so you were saying you kind of mess problems, the structure, the way we do things like you’re, no bad or whatever is you? Have you messed around their seeming avenges to the different structures of your site as if or your blog as a transition? I used to spend a lot of time on the technical components.
In fact, I was spent a lot of time in the WordPress world for a number of years and my the previous company I had we were the fifth partner automatic we, so he divided the company in half last year, sold half of it to woo themes, which Is one of the larger commercial players and the other half to WP engine when the largest commercial hosting providers for WordPress so talk about being in bed in that universe? But the only thing that I’ve learned that really keeps is the fact that I published every day and it almost doesn’t matter at this point.
What the actual underlying structure is. You can make a very hard case that I should spend more time, but if there’s anyone, I can speak with authority just publishing every day. For the last 13 years, like I preempt most people’s content. Even if I’m writing the exact same thing for those who are a little bit of a geek in terms of google pagerank, i’m with my blogs of PR five as a personal blog, that’s ridiculous, and so I I subvert a lot of spaces.
The moment talk about something and it’s just because I have this arc as this trove of stuff most of its crap, but you know crap files on each other and get higher um. So at this point in time, I don’t spend any time on it. Dude, who could be convinced so easily pull you pull me and convince me, but um blog like every day. Yes, do you try to have a non content-rich post they can periodically in addition way bit yeah.
At this point, I there’s no method to my madness. Sometimes it’ll be a hundred words and a picture of my kids and her broken leg and sometimes it’ll be a more thought, deep thought, type post about leadership or my investments or what I don’t. I don’t know so: there’s no there’s no method to the madness at this point. Yeah. Sorry, it’s getting hot or mice hot taught you categorize your posts and, like other any kind of categories that tend to get more activity arrested like I used to.
But now I don’t I have I have four categories and that’s just because we’re wordpress demands 1. I’ve got a legacy archive the 3000 that I wanted to kind of shuffle away I’ve one on autism, that’s kind of rare that and one on photos so for see you like more activity on tightly. You know, there’s no, there’s no clear signals at this point and if I could do way with all categories, I would you see those on the newer platforms like subtle and medium like there’s.
No category like just does another matter hey. Thank you so much for your time in your attendance. I apologize for my ramblings, but thank you for a tail rug for having and we hope, you’ve enjoyed this article presentation of a talk given at a monthly Atlanta, Ruby users group meeting. We need to give consideration to the branding elements of those properties and make sure the visual elements within our control are looking at their very best. So what I’d like to do now is run you through the major social media platforms and step through the elements of control within each so start with facebook.
Facebook, two major components on your business page you’ll, see the cover shot. That’s the big hero shot at the top of the page and at the bottom left of that cover shot is the brand or the logo. Now the cover shot can be changed as many times as you want and to keep it visually interesting for people you might want to change it. You have to change daily or weekly, but you know if you’ve got some big announcement & event coming up, we’ve won an award, or maybe you just want to celebrate a national holiday or or change the the cover shot depending on what time of year it is Seasons and so forth, but so yeah, don’t think you just have to upload it once and it needs to sit like that forever.
The next platform is Twitter, three major elements that you can have some control over there. Firstly, as the wallpaper: that’s the big background image on your page, so we’ve got the activity feed in the middle, but the wallpaper typically spreads on to the left and the right now, on the left hand side, sometimes you can put supporting information about who’s going to Be tweeting opening hours or even URLs to other social media properties.
We always put it on the left hand, side, because Twitter will always move an image across to the left, and sometimes you put it on the right. It’ll get hidden under the activity wall. The next element of Twitter is the cover shot at the top of your activity. Wall. Okay, so you’ve got some control over that and within the cover shot is the brand or the logo or if it’s a personal account, you’ll your avatar or face youtube.
They’ve changed their platform recently they used to have a wallpaper and they still do, but it doesn’t render over the entire background of the page, it’s more like a cover shot these days, but they ask uploaded very high res image so that it renders well on television Sized screens, that’s one to look out for me sure, where they’re going with that the the next one is your linkedin company page now up until recently, there wasn’t a lot.
You could do with that, but now very similar to facebook. They’ve got a cover, shot that you can put in there. You’ve still got your logo, but the cover shot actually is at the head of your company page. So you can make that look quite smart and obviously now with company pages you can start publishing through those those pages. And lastly, one that might not be on your radar, but probably should is Google+ quite easy to get a google plus brand page up and running.
And the reason that that is important is that Google is starting to serve brand assets, around searches for particular companies or brands. You might have seen the Google+ local listings starting to show up if someone were to run a keyword search on your name, but the brand pages the Google+ brand pages are starting to be served to, and so it’s a chance to really sort of. I guess claim the real estate on page one results and Google, of course, is a force to be reckoned with.
Obviously they dominate search, so some considerations there things do degrade over time. Go back, look through fresh eyes, say to yourself. Is this something I could improve upon and be looking your very best online

Your personal finance things like that, it’s redressing any that kind of stuff and you’re not yet invested, definitely consider, invest or not yet invested.
I should say not yet subscribed. I guess you’d be invested in the blog too, but if you’re not yet subscribed, don’t forget, share subscribe, there’s movement, new thing, saying you’re like investing in my blog by subscribing to me but anyways. So this is actually a question I get asked somewhat often, but I feel like when people think about this question. They think of it more of a day trading aspect like how much money do I need, in my account to you, know, day trade like trade of five days a week or you know if you’re trading, Forex or something like that seven days a week.
But that’s not what I’m like talking about here. This is definitely going to be more focused on investing in dividend investing rather than actually trading, because I actually don’t think that’s a very profitable way to invest your money at all, and I really don’t think you’d be able to make a full-time living off of it. I mean I’m sure there are some people out there, but I would say: there’s a lot more people who make more money off of investing than they do day trading.
I really don’t think day. Trading is a viable way to invest your money and I know that’s why. How do you guys actually read my blog but nonetheless, so I’m sure there’ll be some haters in the comment section being like? Oh, I have a ten thousand dollar account and I make a thousand dollars every day day trading will ya. Go you know you keep doing that, but anyways getting back into it. So how much money you actually need to invest to make a full-time living.
So I would probably consider like a reasonable living like I think it’s like in the u.S. Like 20,000 or so a year is like the poverty level. So I assume people aren’t looking to make poverty money unless perhaps they’re doing this on top of their income. Then, of course, an extra 20 K a year it’d be awesome if you’re making a normal income. But you know I’m going to assume that most people who are reading us are probably going to make above that probably that bare minimum, like 30 K plus a year and of course, if you’re getting into bigger portfolio’s and better investing strategies, perhaps more than that.
But we’ll get into in a bit, so the first part of this I’ll be talking about is specifically dividend investing. So let’s look at dividend investing. So let’s say I don’t know you have a reasonably large portfolio. That’s exactly a hundred thousand dollars an amazing! This amount, because it’s nice and easy to like divide it if your portfolio is like half of that or a quarter of that or a tenth of that, whatever it might be.
So let’s say you got a 100k portfolio and let’s say you are a really big dividend: investor pretty much. All the stocks in your portfolio are dividend stocks and let’s say you have a good yield that averages around 3 % and 3 % is actually a good yield once again doing here in the nonsense. In the comment section saying you own, you know your average dividend yield on your portfolio is 10 % and hold on a second.
My cap is be going back here. These dump times interrupts the articles, but anyways stay over there. So let’s say you have 100k. You know you have a 3 % dividend yield on average in your portfolio, so in total every single year, if your portfolio is not really growing, it’s just staying the same. Let’s say you’d be making a total of $ 3,000, so obviously just purely from dividends, with $ 100,000 portfolio at a 3 % dividend yield on average in your portfolio that clearly be not not enough to make a full-time income off of that would be a nice Little chunk of money, if you I don’t know we’re using that to save up and go on vacation every year or something like that, but they would definitely not be enough to go full-time and, let’s say Alyssa’s doing that times.
5. Let’s see you have a 500k portfolio, average dividend yield is 3 % a year and then that once again would be 15k a year. So you know 15,000 bucks once again. That’s definitely a pretty decent amount of money, nothing wrong with that. You know you could definitely buy some nice things or reinvest that or put it into, or you know who knows what maybe your 401k or something you know. I don’t really know what you got to do with it, but regardless that probably still isn’t enough to go full-time for most people that live in the u.
S. Anyway, so you’d probably be still or you would be still below the poverty line in that time. But let’s just do it, you know times 2 again and let’s say you have a million dollar portfolio now, if you have a million dollar portfolio, you’re, probably not trying to invest looking for money to invest full time but either way we’re using it. In this example, let’s say you have a million dollar portfolio, a 3 percent dividend yield and, and that would end up getting you $ 30,000 a year for that income.
Now that would actually be like a full-time income like you could definitely live. You know pretty decently off $ 30,000 and again. Obviously these depends where you lived like. If you plan on living in LA or you know, New York, mmm $ 30,000 probably is going to cut it, but that’s just kind of obvious. You know it’s regardless of where you live. It does matter. Actually you know how much money you’re making but anyways so that you know dividend investing.
You would definitely have to have a pretty significant amount in your portfolio to be getting a livable income from it or you would have to have a really high yield, but it is definitely difficult to find stocks that you know to have an average yield near portfolio Over three or four percent, like four percent, is a very good yield, so is 3 percent like it would be tough unless you’re investing in some very risky stocks are probably going to cut their dividends if you’re investing in stocks to have like 1012.
You know above that percent dividend yield. That is when the risk starts coming on, and it’s very likely that these stocks aren’t going to continue to pay out those dividends. So then you’d be kind of wasting your money. At least that’s how I invest – or at least I do my dividend: investing but anyways, so that’s dividend investing and yes, I do know, I’m sure there’ll be some people in the comment section saying what about yield on cost.
What about that? Well, yes, you’ll! Don’t cost. As a real thing, especially if you’re planning on doing some long term dividend investing, basically what that is not to get to and death is when you buy a stock, you know you buy, let’s say stock it like a 1 % Devine yield and over time they Increase that dividend yield then of course, you’d be getting a better deal front of your money as long as the stock’s price goes up as well as the dividend yield goes up and you know one or another doesn’t necessarily have to go up a lot, but your Yield on cost would be a lot higher than when you bought it originally.
If that makes sense, but anyways moving on to the next part I’ll be talking about what how you could pass and make a full-time living just from a normal portfolio and just from simply getting capital returns back so let’s say I have a hundred thousand dollar portfolio Again and let’s just say you know, I’m doing the average with us and peas been doing over the past like 50 or 60 years, or so, which is 7 %, so that mean I’d, be getting return of $ 7,000 a year and when you’re doing it.
This way, unlike dividends, like dividends, are still taxed, but when it’s a you’re getting that money from actually just simply your portfolio and your stocks up you’d actually have to be selling some of these shares at some point in time to get that gain back. So this once again would be taxed. Unless you like perfectly hold it like over a year, then it would be taxed last put either way. If you’re trying to do this, an income you’d probably be selling more actively to an extent, unless you like hold it for like a set number of years, then just gradually sell over time, but either way you you’re going to get taxed.
If it’s just in your own personal portfolio, so that $ 7000 will also be taxed, and that depends on like your income and stuff like that, but anyways seven thousand dollars, let’s just say flat, without any taxes right now, but you’d have to be selling your stocks. In order to give this money back that money, she’s not going to appear in your portfolio unlike dividends and, let’s just say all right – let’s say you did what my portfolio did.
In 2017 I had a 40 percent returned in 2017, which is like ridiculously good, but I will say, the rest of the market performed pretty well on top of that. So that definitely helped me out a lot. But besides that I had a 40 percent return in 2017 and let’s say you know: I have that hundred K portfolio again times. Forty percent that’s $ 40,000 a year now that is definitely a livable income, but once again, that would involve you selling your stocks to get those gains that you’ve made and that money would always all be’text.
But I’m sure there’s plenty of you out there that make 40k a year, that’s getting taxed. So that’s by you know that is a very, very livable income, but is somewhat unrealistic to think that you’re going to get 40 % returns every single year I’ll say even for myself. I was surprised that I got that good of a return and then, let’s just say, do another example: what’s not such a high return but a low return in a bigger portfolio, let’s say you have a $ 500,000 portfolio and let’s say you’re doing this at 10 %, so this once again is 10 %.
Probably I would. I would argue that that’s relatively reasonable return over a year, it’s a little bit higher than that SMP. But you know, maybe you know what you’re doing with investing you’re investing in good companies. Maybe if we have to have a dividend yield coming in as well and, let’s just say you know 10 % – I don’t think that’s too crazy or out of the ballpark or anything like that, so 10 % times $ 500,000 and this portfolio is much better than The other examples would be fifty eight thousand dollars a year.
So once again, that is definitely a livable income, but they’ll be taxed against, would be a little bit less than that, and also you would have to be selling some sort of stocks in one way or another to get this money back. So once again you know they would hold a pretty bull, pretty reasonable amount in your portfolio, but $ 50,000 a year is definitely a decent chunk of money. There’s you know, there’s nothing as a very, very good income and then you could obviously continue to do the math all the way up, but just a couple of things before I close out the article you know the first part whenever dividend yields the second product went Over just simply like selling your stocks after a certain amount and getting a percent back and of course, you know the way I invest.
There’s plenty of people out there probably invest like this as well. You get different emails and your stocks go up. You know you might not just be totally a dividend investor or just totally like a growth stock investor, or something like that. So I do understand that people have different investing styles and strategies and another thing you know this article was just like just fabricated examples.
These aren’t like real results or anything like that. I’m besides, actually my when I made an example to myself, but either way these are just random. You know examples you, your results in the market may vary the way I invest. I don’t plan on ever taking out as income, at least for probably 40 years or so so I have no intentions of using my portfolio as an income. I have intentions of you know using it just to build up my portfolio and reinvest that back in, because I know down the road.
My portfolio can be significantly bigger. If I continue to reinvest my dividends as well as my returns and just never take money out and only put money in so you know, besides that, I don’t think you know most people out there if you’re investing with that high of money in your portfolio, like Those examples had where you’d be able to make a livable income. It’s likely that you’re making a decent chunk of change from your job or whatever else you do, and you probably don’t need that to make an income.
So I feel like this is like a myth: that kind of like day traders out there and some youtubers out there try to sell their courses on, is that you can get like these ridiculous returns and make a full time income off of stocks. Now, of course, if you’re making 10 % a day yeah, you could totally make a full time income off of investing in the stock market, but it’s probably more like 10 % a year, rather than 10 % of the day, but other than that guys.
It’s really it for this article. If you enjoyed the article. Definitely even like any of you hate this article and thought that it sucked you day, traders out there, I’m sure you’ll be dropping some dislikes on this article feel free to leave it dislike as well, but other than that guys, like I said before, if you’re new To the blog, I talked about the stock market, personal finance, entrepreneurship, investing things like that, its riches, that kind of stuff definitely consider subscribing but other than that guys.

But that’s all the time I have to explain, see store for details, better service, bigger savings that today’s Appalachian Wireless in Mingo Circuit Court, Tuesday, Anthony Arriaga, pleaded guilty to the murder. Last Memorial Day, a former coal company executive in Hatfield.
At the Mountain View, memorial gardens in Mingo County arriaga agreed to enter into a plea agreement with the Mingo County Prosecutor’s Office and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and robbery. During the plea process, arriaga was required to give a statement of fact in the case during his statement, he detailed the events leading to and following Hatfields death, including the murder itself. He said, Hatfields murder was a spur-of-the-moment decision between he and Brendan Fitzpatrick, who is said to stand trial in Hatfield to death.
Soon arriaga said the young men had been on a days-long, meth cocaine and marijuana bins when they pulled into the cemetery supposedly to visit fifth Patrick’s grandmother’s grave. He said he and Fitzpatrick decided to steal Hatfields car to sell it to a chop shop for cash. They agreed to kill Hatfield to prevent him from reporting the theft. I color that this batteries that do it we can often do it, do it, I’m not just make on north south side two three times or so, and I see I see have to draw where, where is he drop working the same wording, the canary? Will that we’re here, for you miss Miller ravine where do Delia, instead of when he got hit and then so how far away from where he was healed me the ability to split, though dispatcher he read it, he got my parts are long and have half a Mountain random, and at the time I just I start freaking out of the way the way he was runner-up, the other personified shit back, add in your soul, and I thought of you, like my father, police, sirens and dogs helicopter subsides, rain.
Arriaga went on to describe making it back to his home in Ohio and attempting to go on the run when police arrived at his door with Tuesday’s plea. Arriaga could spend the rest of his life in prison. First-Degree murder he’ll be facing a life sentence and we’ve had recommended, pursuant to the terms of the plea agreement that he received an additional 40 years on the robbery. So a life sentence plus 40 years is what we’ve recommended for mr.
Arriaga mingo prosecuting attorney. Jonathan Duke Jewell said Hatfields murder, rocked Mingo County and could have happened to anyone who happened to be at the cemetery that day, the senselessness and the randomness is what’s up shopping at me. They hit home to me personally because my mother is buried in that same cemetery, very close to where this took place, and it’s not uncommon for me to be down there with my two young children, Anthony arriaga will be sentenced Nick months in Mingo County Circuit Court.
Brandon Fitzpatrick is set to stand trial, beginning Thursday, that jewel said pending motions could delay the start of the trial. He added, however, that Arriaga statements Tuesday were made under oath and may be used against or for fitzpatrick. I would imagine, probably both sides and the other trial will want to use a transcript and the testimony from this hearing in that proceeding, reporting from williamson chris anderson, ekb news,
What are you eating? Check out the video below to find out about a healthy snack.
If you are a Manufacturer or an importer of cloth diapers, although there’s some caveats, There for importers much harder to qualify as a small batch manufacturer, so Mainly focused on domestic manufacturers there, and they will do something that I Hope that you guys find fun which will be interactive audience polling where I’m going to ask you a series of questions and then we’re going to get Feedback, you guys are going to guess the answers and we’ll talk about what the Actual answers are on several questions pertaining to cloth, diapers I’ll talk, About children’s product certificates we’ll actually go through an example of A children’s product certificate specific to cloth diapers and what Information needs to go in what section and then I’ll highlight a children’s Apparel recall example: that is not a cloth diaper, but it is a defect.
Recall Associated with children’s apparel and I’ll talk about why it’s a good example For this product at that time, I’ll hyatt I’ll highlight some of the CPSC business Resources that our office makes available to use Guys, let you know where to find those resources and then finally, we’ll do a Question and answer session at the end of the presentation so first off for Labeling and testing requirements we’ll take a look at labeling cloth, diapers Require tracking information because it’s a children’s product and tracking Information needs to be permanently affixed to the product and the packaging And we get a lot of questions in our office about what it means to have.
Appropriate tracking information on your product and packaging you want to make Sure that four things are covered, the first thing is you want the manufacturer. Or private label er name is it’s being made domestically, it’s being made. Overseas or even you know, to our northern neighbors or seven neighbors in North America then you’re going to want to put the importer name on the product. And the packaging, you also need to make sure that the location and date of Production of the product is included in your tracking information and I will Touch on some frequently asked questions right after this slide, it will kind of Highlight what that means in certain contexts? You want to also include the Third piece of information, which is detailed info on the manufacturing, Process which includes batch overrun number information if you use that in Your manufacturing process can be a very good way to isolate within your Production line where there could be an issue associated with the product and Then finally, the fourth piece of information is any other info.
That’s Going to help a consumer ascertain the source of the product, because that is The purpose of permanent tracking information and one thing that I like to Recommend here is the website for your business, for two reasons: one makes it a Lot easier for a consumer that might be having an issue with a product that They’ve gotten from your company to get in touch with you and then the second Thing is it’s free advertising right if they like the product, they can see the Website and go onto your website order more product straight online, so there Are frequently asked questions section on our website and I’ve got the address.
There CPSC gov forward slash tracking label again. This appears as a hyperlink In the handout on the right-hand side of your screen in the pdf version of this Presentation, it is actually a hyperlink takes you right to the frequently asked Questions slide or the free sorry. The frequently asked questions page on our Website so with that being said, let’s take a look at some of the frequently Asked questions that we get on tracking information that might apply to the Cloth diapers that you might be designing or manufacturing.
So what meets The location of production requirement for permanent tracking information well It’s being made domestically city, state and country of manufacture, so where I’m Physically standing today, it would say the desde Maryland USA and that would Meet the location of production requirement it’s being made in another Country you want to put the province in the country and then what happens if You’re importing a product question we get frequently is: should an importers Name appear on the tracking label instead of the manufacturers and the Answer is yes: if the product is being manufactured outside the United States, The importers name is going to need to take the place of the manufacturers name.
On those four pieces of information on the tracking label, another question that We get very frequently do I need to test the tracking label and certify its Compliance and the answer here is no, however, the way that you decide to mark Your consumer product cannot introduce lead into a children’s product, so you Want to be careful in the material that you choose if you’re going to Permanently affixed a fabric tracking label and then another frequent question: If you’re using disposable packaging does an adhesive label on disposable, Packaging meet the permanently affixed on packaging requirement and the answer Here is maybe, and it depends on how adhesive that label is if this is a Label that is actually going to stay on the disposable packaging such that it Reaches the consumer, then that is a permanently affixed label on packaging.
And would meet the requirements, however, if it’s going to fall right off that Would not meet the requirement for permanently affixing a tracking label on Packaging so let’s take a look at testing requirements and I will try to Highlight some of the questions that we get on cloth diapers, specifically that Kind of confuse it with other different types: Consumer products, because I think it’ll help you guys figure out what applies to The products that you are working with so the first thing is a children’s Product so lead content and accessible components applies, and that is from Congress at 15 USC part 1278, a and the level, therefore, leg, content and Accessible components is 100 ppm for lead and paint and surface coatings and This will be a coating that doesn’t sink or I guess, fully absorb into the Substrate, that standard is 90 ppm or that limit and that’s from our regs at 16 CFR part 1303.
We’ve got the two types of lead testing that could apply to your Cloth diapers, depending on how they’re constructed the third thing is: Flammability testing and there is a general wearing apparel flammability Standard which is our reg 16 10 and there’s one for vinyl plastic film, much Less applicable on cloth diapers, although we do get some questions on Accessible diaper diaper inserts that might involve a vinyl plastic filament At 1611, but apparel flammability standards do apply most likely.
It’s Going to be 16 10 that applies to your cloth, diapers in terms of testing Procedure and a note here – and you know this – is here because a lot of questions Come into our office related to whether or not cloth diapers are considered Children’s sleepwear, the answer is they’re not and the reason that we get That question is because children’s sleepwear, as many of you know, is subject To a more stringent flammability standard, also in our regulations, which Is 16 CFR, 16, 15 and 16 16 for our agency does not consider cloth diapers as Children’s sleepwear and the fourth bullet here is also based on a question.
That we frequently get is whether or not cloth diapers need to be tested for Phthalates, as many of you know, toys and child care articles that facilitate Sleeping and eating are subject to phthalates limits and the phthalates There can exceed more than 0.1 percent. There are six types of phthalates that Either are temporarily banned pending a final rule from the Commission are Permanently banned in precise components, however, this does not Apply to cloth diapers, they are not considered a child care article that Facilitate sleeping and eating and they’re, certainly not a children’s toy So no phthalates testing is required on cloth diapers.
Once you have met all of Your testing requirements, you want to make sure that you properly certify that You’ve met these requirements and you do that through creating a children’s Product certificate and we’ll go through an example of that and hopefully you’ll Find that useful I’ll also refer you to some resources on our website in terms Of obligations of who needs to create a children’s product certificate, it is Importers and domestic manufacturers that are responsible for making sure That a CPC has been created and is in place to cover the cloth diapers that They may be importing or manufacturing all right.
Let’s take a little harder. Look at each of the testing requirements because there could be, depending on the Type of material or the way that you are constructing your cloth diapers there Could be ways that you would be able to avoid testing in certain instances. So The first requirement that was on that bulleted list from the fly before was Led content testing from 15 USC 1278 – a you remember the limit.
There is 100 ppm And accessible components, however, keep in mind that there is a pretty extensive List of materials that we know after years and years of testing within our Agency that are not going to exceed the lead limit as long as they’re in an Untreated on adulterated State and those materials, I’ve highlighted some here and I’ll go through those are in 16 CFR, 1500 point nine one and again that’s a Hyperlink right to that regulation that is available on the PDF handout on the Right-Hand side of your screen, the reason I wanted to hyperlink the Regulation for you, if not so, you can go and read, regulations which I know Non-Lawyers find really exhausting and no fun it’s because I’ve done my best Here to highlight each of the materials that I think may apply to your cloth.
Diapers, but that regulation has a pretty extensive list, the contents of which I Could not list – or I guess I could list, but it might be a little bit exhaustive. For our purposes today, okay, so if you are using a textile That’s not on this list, check the regulation and see if it’s there, because If so, you might be able to avoid total leg content testing under twelve. Seventy Eight a so: what are the materials? The first one is a wood paper and similar Materials made from wood we’ve had some questions about cloth diapers.
I guess There are some innovations in the way of textiles that are being created from Wood and paper derived products, so those would fall under that exemption or Likely would you’re welcome to reach out to us with specific questions on Textiles that you might have and then, if we internally need to get a decision. From our experts within our agency, we’re happy to do that. But wood paper and similar materials made from wood are listed in 1500 point Nine one as not requiring total lead content testing now the second bullet Here is CMYK process printing inks, and why is this important Cmyk process printing ink fully absorb into the substrate, so they are listed as From not requiring total egg content testing and then natural, fibers diet or Undyed, including, but not limited to and again, I’ve had tried to highlight here a Lot of the materials we get questions on, but there’s a much more extensive list.
Online cotton linen hemp, bamboo file, silk and sheep’s wool and died or undyed States as long as they are untreated and then manufacturing our manufactured Fibers also died or undyed, including, but not limited to rayon yfl acetate. Triacetate rubber polyester nylon, acrylic motor acrylic and spandex Additionally, I’ve added this is based on agency guidance that we’ve received Internally from our staff that velcro and applix, which are two materials that Are frequently used in cloth diapers would be considered textiles that fall Under 1500 point nine one, it would not require total leg content testing.
Also Important to remember here, there are other components on your cloth: diapers Besides the fabric that you make them up, and you Should think of the products that you are creating kind of like a puzzle with A bunch of different pieces and you need to look at each of the pieces and see Whether or not different types of testing would apply based on how the Pieces come together so for zipper, snaps and other fasteners.
That would be made. Of like a metal or a poly resin, you want to make sure that those comply with the Total lead limit on substrate and then polyurethane laminate or pull we get Questions about frequently on cloth diapers would not require testing if It’s inaccessible, however, it’s not on the list at 1500. Point nine one! So if it is accessible, it would require total egg content testing. Colorants may be a source of lead, so you want to think about how your coloring And dyeing your textiles that you’re, using and depending on the types of inks And colorants that you’re using to do so, they could be a first LED that would Require total egg content testing and again testing labs can very frequently Help you determine whether or not lead content testing would be needed.
You’re Also welcome to reach out to our office, and we can forward internally to the Experts here at the agency to help you figure out whether or not testing would Apply for lead in paint and surface coatings. This is the second bullet point. On that four bullet point list that we talked about for testing requirements. It’s a straight from our reg. You remember for paint and surface coating. The limit is 90 ppm.
Unfortunately, on paint and surface coatings, there’s no Exceptions and exemptions, like we just talked about for total egg content. However, thing to remember here is that if you don’t have paint or a surface Coating, this is not going to apply to you, but what does it mean to be a Surface coating well surface coating is something that’s Applied to a substrate that does not absorb into the substrate meaning it’s Sitting on the surface, so examples that we see here that require ledge and paint And surface coatings testing in a cloth, diaper context or frequently screen Printed fabrics and then painted zippers and snaps and with painted zippers and Snaps remember they can, with the puzzle, piece method that they’re going to need.
Total lead content testing for whatever the zipper and snap is made of And then lead in paints and surface coatings testing for the paint. That’s Sitting on top of that snap, all right, the third requirement is flammability. Testing in flammability testing on general wearing apparel is in our Regulations, part 1610. That applies to all textiles that are used for adult and Children’s wearing apparel and cloth diapers are children’s wearing apparel This just of note, this flammability testing section does not apply to Certain types of hats, gloves, footwear and inner lining fabrics and then for Children’s sleepwear that’s got to meet a more stringent standard, so I just Wanted to highlight that, for those of you that might be making other type of Apparel items and wondering whether or not the flammability testing of 16:10 Will apply to those items, so a vinyl plastic film is the other flammability Testing requirement and again very frequently, input applies here because Vinyl plastic film really is a disposable diapers material.
It would be Unsupported vinyl plastic film that could be transparent, translucent and Opaque but it needs to be uncovered or exposed in wearing apparel to require Flammability testing to 16-11 from thymes and vinyl cloth, diaper inserts. If Those are exposed, this would apply but again very limited circumstances. I just Wanted to bring it to your attention, though, so for flammability, there are Some exemptions for flammability testing and those can be found in our regulation.
Section 16, 10.1, section D and the fabrics that do not require flammability Testing are broken into two main categories. The first one is plain: Surface fabrics that exceed a certain weight, and that way it is eighty eight Point two grams per square meter or two point: six: ounces per square yard; Regardless of fiber content, so that’s the first type of fabric that would be a Type of textile that could be exempted from Ability testing and in the second group, our plane and resurface fabrics that are Made of six materials or any combination of them, regardless of weight and those Materials are acrylic, Mota, acrylic, nylon, olefin, polyester and wool.
So I you know: Point to take away from the flammability testing exemptions and the list of Materials that we aren’t going to exceed the lead content, our total leg content, Is when sourcing materials, if you would like to try to limit your obligation to Test, because that can sometimes you know, add to the expense associated with there. It always adds to the expense associated with getting a product to market.
Then, if You are creative and sourcing, your materials, and you check fifteen hundred Point nine one: four total leg content exceptions list and you check the Flammability exemptions list and you managed to pick textiles that fall under Both and you can avoid testing in certain circumstances. So flammability testing – I just wanted to highlight some of the things associated With it and how it works, because we do that some questions about what does it? Mean to be different classes of fabric, and it’s you know under flammability, Testing, so what flammability testing standards do? Is they classify the Flammability of a textile into three classes and that’s class, one: two: three And it’s based on two main things, which is the average burn time over several Specimens or the speed that there that they burn and in the surface Characteristics of the fabric and class: three textiles are considered.
Dangerously flammable and are not suitable for use in clothing, because They rapidly and intensively burn, so this is just a picture of a sample being Prepped at our testing lab and for flammability testing, you want to have And again, this is all in 1610 and the testing procedure is outlined there You’ll want to have a 2 by 6 inch specimen, and you can see that attach to The late their eyes held at a 45 degree, Angle: here’s a 16 millimeter flame, a one-second ignition.
The ignition has to Take place on the surface, the burn time is recorded, there’s a prescribed sample. Prep on you know what you need to do before you put the sample on the plate. And begin the burning process and then what you do afterwards and then Refurbishing is required and refurbishing is laundering. The textile And whatever way is going to be prescribed for whoever’s going to wear It so again very complex, the flammability testing procedure and it’s Outlined in 16 CFR, 1610, four other things to keep in mind on children’s Clothing, small parts, sometimes cloth diapers, have small potential small parts.
In them – and you can see some examples of small parts – the toggle which I frankly Have not seen on cloth diapers but could certainly exist, and then you see buttons. Which I have seen on cloth diapers, so a cloth diaper examples, so things to keep In mind with things like those toggles or those buttons, are that children’s Clothing and accessories are exempted from the small parts regulations. Many of You know small parts does apply to children’s toys if they’re intended for Children under the age of three and many children’s products is intended for Children under the age of three certainly cloth.
Diapers are, however, a Children’s clothing and accessories are exempted from a small parts rags, but you Need to make sure those things are secure. And I’ll talk about a recall example on children’s apparel and highlight why That’s important but suffice to say for now that, if buttons or toggles start Falling off of your cloth diapers, because they’re, poorly constructed or They’re not properly attached, then our agency to take a look at that based on a Report or our own internal investigation and determine that that could be a Product hazard, so if you are using toggles or buttons any kind of fastener That might be affixed to your cloth diapers.
You want to make sure that those Are very secure and don’t have the ability to be pulled off all right for once touch on the small Batch manufacturer registration benefits because many people attending may Qualify as a small batch manufacturer and one of the questions we frequently Get is what are the benefits if I register so at the outset. I just want to Say registration is not required at all by your agency.
However, if you do Register there are certain benefits, so let’s talk about those and we’ll first Start with what it takes to qualify as a small batch manufacturer, the Qualifications in this calendar year, you must meet two requirements and that’s a Gross revenue requirement and a limit on the amount of manufactured products that Fall under your registration in a calendar year so for gross revenue last Calendar year you cannot have exceeded right under 1.
1 million and that figures On your screen and you cannot have manufactured more than 7,500 units of The covered product that qualifies you as a small batch manufacturer so in the Context of cloth diapers, what are the benefits of registering and small batch Manufacturer the benefit is that registered eligible small batch Manufacturers may be able to avoid third-party testing at independent CPSC Excepted labs for specific tests on children’s products in one example is The flammability test for a general wearing apparel in 16 CFR part 1610, now Registered eligible small batch manufacturers can conduct first party Testing or manufacturer testing.
In this context, however, you must make sure that You are strictly meeting the requirements of 16:10 and its sample. Prep and testing procedures, which are extensive if you are interested in this If you have specific questions, please feel free to reach out to us and we’re Happy to seek guidance with the groups within our agency to have much more Expertise on this than I do, you can find out more information on the benefits of Small batch manufacturer registering on our website at CPSC gov forward, slash Small batch and again, it appears as a hyperlink on your screen.
It’s a Hyperlink in the handout on the right hand, side of your screen in the PDF Version of the of this document all right, I love charts As many people who know me know, so I just wanted to give you guys a chart if You are a manufacturer of cloth, diapers that you could have handy and it would Be an easy reference for you, so things to keep in mind here. I’ve got the for Potential types of testing that we talked about at the outset and then I’ve Got three columns.
The first one is: is third-party CPSC accepted lab testing? Required for each of these types of tests and we’ll talk about that by test In just a second, the second of the columns on the right hand, side is, can Written assurances from our supplier be relied upon by a registered small-batch Manufacturer so for those of you attending today that are registered Small batch manufacturers or you are eligible to register and you are Considering whether or not you should register this will let you know the Benefits associated with that and then finally could a domestic manufacturer Rely on timely component part testing from a supplier to avoid retesting for Each of these types of tests, so let’s take a look at the left-hand side and Look at each of the types of testing and then we’ll look at we’ll go right across Each of the columns so first one a total egg content which applies to accessible Parts usually total egg content applies to the textiles that you use for your Cloth diapers, it would also include polyurethane laminate and then the snaps And zippers that you use the substrate there, be it metal or poly resin.
So third Party CPSC accepted lab testing required no on total egg content. Can you rely on Written assurances, if you’re a registered small batch manufacturer – yes So what is the written assurance from your supplier is something on their Letterhead, that’s certifying to you that the products that they’re supplying us Complies with our Legg content limit of 100 ppm, so that is this should be a Distinct in your mind, from a testing report, but again that is only eligible Registered small batch manufacturers that can utilize written assurances Until the LED content and then on the also on the right hand, side for total Egg content domestic manufacturer can lie on component part testing from a Supplier on total leg, content for their textiles order, snaps and zippers for LED And paint and surface coatings you’ll see that it’s the flip of the leg.
Content above it, you do need third-party CPSC accepted lab testing. So if you have Things like painted snaps or zippers, or screen printing you’re going to need to Have that lab tested by a CPSC, accepted testing lab and we’ll talk about how to Find those in just a second, you cannot rely on a written assurance that the Lead and paint and surface coating does not exceed our 90 ppm limit if you’re a Registered small batch manufacturer.
But if you get a testing report that is on The component part, be it the painted snap or zipper that is from your Supplier, that’s certifying to you that it’s passed, the 90 ppm LED in painting Surface coatings limit you can rely on that component. Part testing for Flammability on general wearing apparel under 16 10. That does not require Third-Party CPSC accepted lab testing. However, you can, as a registered small Batch manufacturer rely on a written assurance that the textile that they’re Supplying us passes the apparel flammability testing and you can also, as A domestic manufacturer rely on timely component part testing and what, if it Means to be time like timely component part testing, we’ll talk about that in a Second, but it’s usually a testing report, that’s within the past a year and that You make sure test your actual product component and then finally for vinyl.
Plastic cell flammability testing, as it might apply to diaper and parts that are Exposed in some way again very isolated application of 16:11 in flammability Testing here you do not have to have that CPSC accepted third-party lab Tested and you do have the ability to rely on written assurances if you are an Eligible registered small batch manufacturer and you can also rely on Timely component part testing from your supplier of the vinyl plastic film, so We just talked about all the testing requirements.
How do you find testing lab If you are required to use a CPSC excepted lab, you’ve got to find that Cpsc accepted lab via our website, and I’ve got the site linked there. That is Available on your handout at cpsc.Gov forward, slash lab search, you have the Ability to narrow your search by region or by country and by scope, meaning the Type of product testing that you need – and there is a lab search demo – article Available on our website and I’ve got the hyperlink in your handout.
We are Working on the lab search page and we’re trying to make it a little more user, Friendly in the meantime, if you have questions, feel free to reach out to us, We’re happy to help you find a CPSC accepted testing lab for your cloth. Diapers and the lab search demo, article can also probably help you figure out. How to best use that website, if you you know, are doing this after hours or at a Time when will or myself are not available to help you on the phone, so Testing frequency there is a periodic testing rule.
One of the questions that We hear a lot is: how often do I have to get my cloth diapers tested? Well, the Main answer is that a vast majority of manufacturers and importers need to make Sure that they’re testing their products once per year – and that applies, that is The default, however, if you have a production testing plan and if you’ve Got questions about that we can talk to you more in depth about what that means.
You do have the ability, with a production testing plan in place to test Every two years and I’ll caveat that in just a second about material changes, Every three years requires that you have a testing lab accredited under that ISO. Standard very, very, very few manufacturers are going to qualify for Every three year testing and the takeaway here, the vast majority – it’s Going to be once per year, so our testing requirements, what is the proper Procedure, manufacturers and importers need to submit the samples to the Testing lab and we get questions on that – we’ll talk about that a little bit later.
In the webinar, the CPSC accept a testing lab receives Your samples perform the applicable testing and then They provide you, the testing results, our recommendation to lower your cost. You Want to find one lab that can do all the testing that you need to have done. Labs Are accredited or accepted by the CPSC on a test by test basis, so they may not. Be able to perform all the testing that you might need to have done on your Product, so when looking for a testing lab, you want to make sure that they are Accepted by us, especially in the case of children’s products, that they can test, Or conduct all the testing that you need to have done in your cloth, diapers and For importers, the testing needs to be completed before entry at the port or You distribute them in commerce, and you need to have proof of that ready to be Provided and I’ll talk about that, a little bit more depth in just a second So I said I would caveat the testing requirements a second ago when I talked About every two years, with a production testing plant or once per year for the Vast majority of manufacturers that changes, if you make a material change to The design of your product, and what does it mean to be a material change? We get a Lot of questions on that, and truly that is a case-by-case basis, question that You know, I can’t give you a broad answer on, but if you do have questions on Whether or not some things a material change, please feel free to reach out to Myself and we’ll in our office and what we can get guidance internally on Whether or not what you’ve done is considered a material change that would Necessitate retesting the affective component part or the entire product.
You Do have the option to do either one in most circumstances, but again it’s Case-By-Case so we’re happy to help you if you believe that you might have a Material change on the design of your cloth diapers. That could mean that you Need to test more frequently than that 12-month window, Once that retesting on the component, part of the entire product has happened. After our material change, you need to make sure that you issue a new Children’s product certificate and who’s responsible for children’s product Certificates, manufacturers or importers are responsible for making sure that a Cps or a CPC is available based on passing test results all right, so I hope Everybody is ready to go and excited about interactive audience, polling, we’re Going to see how well you’ve all been paying attention and I’m going to you Know hopefully, you guys are going to get all the answers right, but let’s just see How we do so, I’m going to go ahead and put the first question up and that Question hopefully, is appearing on your screen and it is do reusable pocket.
Diapers have to bear a permanent tracking label, and these are questions. Based on ones that we get quite frequently in our office, so let’s see as A group how we do you all right and it looks like everybody Has voted so I’m going to go ahead and close the results and, let’s share and See what we as a group thought the results were on whether or not reusable Pocket diapers need to bear a permanent tracking label and it looks like by and Large we thought the answer was yes.
So, let’s see if we were right and good news, We we are correct, so here’s what you guys need to keep in mind if we’re Talking about reusable pocket diapers that are sold in a set, then the answer Is yes, the reusable pocket diapers need permanent tracking information on them? So great job, everybody – that was just our warm-up question, so Let’s see how we do on the second question again, these are based on real Questions that we receive from manufacturers and importers of cloth Diapers each day, so the question here is which lead limit applies to accessible Polyurethane laminate and cloth diapers would it be.
The 100 ppm lead limit that Applies to substrate lead or the 90 ppm lead limit for paint and surface Coatings, you all right now give you guys just a few More seconds it looks like there is an overwhelming response. All right, I’m Going to close the poll and let’s see what we as a group, thought the answer: Was on which lead limit applies to accessible polyurethane, laminate and Cloth diapers and it looks like the group pretty overwhelmingly thinks that The answer is 100 ppm, which applies to total, lead content and substrates.
Let’s See if you guys were right – and the answer is 100 ppm for lead and substrate So the large majority of you guys were correct: okay, well, you’re and you’re. Doing great so far, so let’s see how you do on our third question about cloth. Diapers also frequently received from members of the public all right, the Question here are cloth diapers, consider children’s sleepwear subject to the more Stringent children’s sleepwear flammability standard when people are Answering very quickly that’s a good indicator because we get so many Questions here, because young children sleep frequently in cloth diapers, so we Get questions about whether or not it’s considered children’s sleepwear, so Everybody voted so quickly that I would go ahead and close the poll and then We’ll take a look at the results and see what we thought as a group on whether or Not cloth diapers fall under the children’s sleepwear flammability Testing standards – and it looks like I haven’t – been able to stump you guys so Far because a huge majority, 85 % of you said that the answer was no.
Let’s take a Look and see if that, if you guys are right and the answer is no cloth – diapers Are considered general wearing apparel, so they are not subject to the more Stringent children’s sleepwear flammability standards they are instead Subject to the general wearing flammability standards of 1610 All right, I got another question queued up for you guys, let’s see how you do on This one and the question here is our cloth diaper subject to salads testing.
Thank you to everybody, who’s Participating you guys you’re on the ball and I’m reading the participation Percentages go off the charts all right, so I’m going to go ahead and close. The Poll here and let’s see what the group thought in terms of whether or not cloth Diapers would be subject to phthalates testing and, as a group, you Overwhelmingly thought that the answer was no, that cloth diapers would not be Subject to phthalates testing, let’s see if you were correct, you are correct.
The Answer is no phthalates. Testing applies only to children’s toys. In child care articles that facilitate sleeping and eating, our agency has put Out guidance and it’s available on our website, I’m happy to point you to those Resources that children childcare articles that facilitate sleeping and Eating would include something like a baby, bib, sippy cups and utensils and Children’s sleepwear as well all right, let’s see how you do on the Fifth question that I’ve got queued up for you and the question here is our Disposable diaper liners subject to the same testing requirements as cloth.
Diapers, I will give you guys just a few more Seconds to get your answer in before we close the poll all right, I’m Going to go ahead and close the poll and let’s see what we as a group, thought on Whether or not disposable, diaper liners were subject to the same testing. Requirements as cloth diapers looks like the large majority of you, Guys thought that the answer is no, that there are different requirements, that Apply to disposable, diaper liners, let’s see if you were right and you guys were correct.
The answer is No, that diaper liners as with cloth diapers, need to meet lead content. Requirements so in that way, disposable, diaper, liners and cloth diapers are the Same in lead content requirements, however, on flammability they are Different disposable, diaper liners that are completely unexposed to the outside Do not require flammability testing and that’s per our regulation. 16 CFR. 16. 1034.
So it was a bit tricky because that’s information that I didn’t provide, but You guys already knew the answer. So, let’s see how you do on question number. 6 – and the question here is – are cloth diapers, subject to the small parts ban, Because they are intended for children under age 3. Alright I’ll give you guys just a few More seconds to get your answers in because this is trending not in a Decisive fashion, all right, I’m going to go ahead and close the poll and, let’s See what we as a group thought the answer was on whether or not cloth Diapers are subject to small parts banned because they’re intended for Children under 3, you can see the group it trends towards yes, but we’re close to Evenly split we’re 6040 on our percentages, let’s see if the folks that Selected, yes, we’re correct, and the answer here is actually no cloth.
Diapers Are exempt from small parts testing and the small parts banned under 16 CFR? 1501. Point 3 D, however, because children’s clothing and apparel, which cloth diapers Are do not require small parts testing and therefore there’s no small parts ban. On them, however, please keep in mind – and this is the caveat from earlier – that all Snaps and buttons still need to be secured on those cloth diapers because You don’t want to be in a recall situation based on a product defect, so As a group we’re doing great, we’ve got one more question and I’m going to go.
Ahead and queue up for you guys, that is a little bit more specific. That again is Based on the types of questions that we have received from you know, fellow Manufacturers and importers of cloth diapers all right and the question that You guys are taking a look at is a manufacturer of cloth diapers, where the Diapers are made entirely of bamboo fiber and velcro. Do Bislett testing need To be conducted on those diapers, alright, I’m going to give you guys just A few more moments to get your question, I mean your your answers to the question.
Then all right, I’m going to go ahead and close the poll because it looks like Everybody’s participated, so let’s see what we as a group thought the answer. Was then we’ll see whether or not we were right? So 72 % thought the answer was No, that cloth diapers made entirely of bamboo, fiber and velcro would not Require lead content testing. So let’s see whether or not you guys were correct. And the majority of you were correct, those cloth diapers would not require Led content testing and that’s pursuant to the list that we discussed earlier Which is in 16 CFR 1500 point nine, one specifically D: seven that lists Unadulterated and untreated bamboo, fiber and velcro is included by our agency.
Interpretation at fifteen hundred point nine one and the list of materials that Do not require total leg content testing based on years and testing by our agency. Some things that we know will pass and will not exceed the substrate lead. Content level of 100 ppm, so thank you. Everybody for participating in the poll. Let’s take a look at children’s product certificates and what would go on a Children’s product certificate that covers cloth diapers, there are seven Pieces of information that need to be on a children’s product certificate, we’ll Go through each one caveat here: this is for demonstrative purposes only so it Might not include everything that applies to your cloth, diaper based on Design, some of the things that are included here may not apply based on the Design of your cloth diaper so we’re just using it for an example in number One you need to describe the product covered by the certificate, so that’s Going to be a full description, as best you can of the cloth diapers that you’re Manufacturing or importing and number two you’re going to cite to each CPSC Safety rules to which you are certifying compliance and I’ve listed out there, the Four things that could apply that we’ve covered today, which is the two To lead testing, then the two different types of flammability testing: again Keeping in mind vinyl plastic film only applies to uncovered and exposed vinyl Plastic film large majority are going to fall right under 1610 for clothing.
Textile flammability testing number three: you need to make sure that you Include your importer or domestic manufacturer contact information number Four is the contact info for the person that maintains your testing records very Frequently that individual might not be within your organization might be Somebody outside to include as much contact info as you possibly can. To help our import staff in our compliance staff take a look at these Certificates and get in touch with the right people for testing records.
Number Five, the date in place of manufacture of the goods that this certificate is Covering in this case, your cloth, diapers number six, the location of testing and The date is test on which the certification is based. However, if you Are relying on a regulation, the two of which we have discussed today, have to do With total lead content testing the list of materials that would not require Total leg content testing at fifteen hundred point nine one or flammability Testing exemptions in sixteen ten point, one D, if you are relying on those to not Have to test your product, you want to make sure that those citations are Listed out in number, six and six should parallel to in terms of the sections on Your certificate be as specific as you can in fifteen hundred point nine one And sixteen ten point, one D on which portion of those exempted or accepted Materials, you are relying on, so you know if it’s the weight of the fabric put the Weight of the fabric, if it’s the content of the fabric, put the content of the Fabric in number six, the number seven is the contact info of the testing lab that You use and again you want to provide as much information as you can and, lastly, I’ve got the asterisk at the top to remind you that if you are a registered Small batch manufacturer, you want to make sure to include your registration.
Number on your children’s product certificate all right, important things: To remember in children’s products certificates all children’s products, Require them that includes cloth, diapers manufacturers and importers have to be The ones that are certifying in their CPC that the product is very important. Our manufacturing complies and CPSC gov /c PC is our website for children’s Product certificates – and there are two samples on our website, which is Hyperlink in the handout on the right hand, side of your screen and those Samples are for children’s clothing, which you can absolutely use for your Cloth diapers or for a children’s toy, if that’s something that you’re also Manufacturing and the children’s product certificates three main things to Remember here those certificates need to accompany each shipment and there are Different ways of doing that I’ll talk about electronic certificates in just a Second, a copy of the certificate needs to be furnished to each distributor or Retailer of the product that you’re working with you do not have a Requirement to provide it to the ultimate consumer, a copy of the Certificate also needs to be available to our Commission, our representatives of Our agency or Customs and Border Protection upon request and then finally Electronic certificates, our Commission has ruled that electronic certificates Are absolutely fine, but those must be completed or it created the certificate.
Needs to be created no later than the time of shipment or first distribution, Within the United States, so it’s not an after-the-fact thing where you can go in And create a certificate after the fact all right. Lastly, I’m just going to Highlight a recall example, which is not on cloth diapers, but it is on children’s Apparel for a defect because this could apply to cough diapers, many cloth, Diapers have snaps just like this.
One Vita is at the bottom and you can see in Terms of units there were four hundred and seventy nine thousand of these Onesie fold, the recalled date here is August 2015, and the problem was that the Snaps weren’t sufficiently affixed to the onesie, so they came off and they Were a small part that posed a choking hazard so even though important to Remember even though small parts, the small parts band or the small parts Testing does not apply to children’s apparel.
You cannot have a product defect. Like this, where the snaps are coming off of the product, so you want to make That you fully secure the snaps or closure items to the cloth diapers that You are manufacturing all right: some Consumer Product Safety, Commission, Business resources: I’ve got my contact information up. There, you’ve got my email Address the telephone number: that’s there, 301 five! Oh four: seven! Nine! Four! Five is our business line.

The link is there and then The regulatory robot, which is an interactive bot that helps you figure, Out what requirements apply to your product, based on asking you a series of Interactive questions and generating a customized report at the end, all right, a Few last things to point out and then I’ll take a few last questions at the End, we have an agency YouTube blog now and there is a playlist.
That’s Specific for our webinar series, just like the one we’ve conducted here today – This is the third in our series, so the previous two are available on CPSC Webinar series playlist online and again that link is in the PDF handout on the Right hand, side of your screen and then, if you want to stay up to date on the Things that we here at the small business Ombudsman’s office are working On be it webinars or other things that might be going on with the Commission, we Try to do a nice job at the end of each month to issue a newsletter so that you Can keep track of Commission activities that you might be able to submit a Public comment on and to sign up for that monthly newsletter.

Who is helping with your digital business footprint?
So this is how I make youtube articles. I’ve actually gone through a lot of iterations, but because this is the first one I think I’ve documented top to bottom we’re going to call it version 1.0. When, technically, I have lost track of versioning, but for purposes of YouTube here and when I go back and say: okay, what did I change? I can make version, you know one point whatever or when I do a lot of changes.
Maybe a version to X, we’ll figure out like all projects that are open-source and you try to figure out what you’re going to do for versioning numbers and that can be the complicated part. Occasionally at least for me, because I think gives us a big change. An incremental change, but let’s get started. What we have here is, and I’m going to swap between the cameras and then I’m going to show how I actually put this article together on the editing side, and the reason I have to do both is because my youtube blog is obviously a lot of tutorials And some articles like this, so there’s a mix of things I do and I want to kind of show all of them.
So this part is the filming part is freely called filming. Nothing is film, it’s all digital, but this is the part where we do things in the studio and how we edit it together up. Here I have a GoPro just out of frame. Then we have two lights. I have my Aston microphone in shotgun mode, which is currently the audio source and I’m trying to figure out how to get the audio when I do behind here. I guess I’ll just be oh, so I have my aperture light and my cheap softbox from I well.
I think I got it either for me, I was on or ebay I’ll find an Amazon link for you. This is not an expensive one at all. That’s a little bit more money, but not excuse me that one’s a little bit more money, but I still really like it because it works really. Well, it’s an LED light. It’s portable. It’s got batteries on it, but now that we’re doing more studio stuff, I’m leaving these set up more often anyways.
So when we’re doing a product review, for example, I got a couple of products here. I got my pixel phone, which I’m getting get ready to do a review on. I currently have my GoPro mounted to a boom stand over here, and this boom stand works really good to hold a camera. Now I’ve Marvin’s camera’s, not here right now, I’ve been borrowing his 70d until I can decide whether or not a one of I another, seventy which I think I have a deal on a line on one right now, but that’s primary.
What we’re shooting with over there is the Canon 70d. I’m really happy to the camera everyone’s like. Oh, it doesn’t do 4k or doesn’t do this. I’m like. I don’t think my tutorials would be any better in 4k if they not adding any value, then yeah. Why even add it to there? Also we for the TV hookup, so we can see what we’re doing we have a wire going from that. So this is what I see over here. So kcci do glance over there.
Try never to look, but when we’re setting up this is an easy way for me to see. What’s going on is to look, we just plug it into the TV. I understand everything is going on with the camera and you know gives me a good idea of things on there now with the magic lantern software, it’s nice, because it gives me the audio level. So I can make sure the audio is good on this, and this asked a microphone I’ll leave a link to below I’m really happy with this purchase.
Now everyone’s, like. Oh rode, mic Pro this that I tried the rode mic I had the road might go. I liked it, but I liked the audio quality better on the Aston and it does stereo. So when we did that group setting where we had all of us here doing hot sauce, the acid microphone didn’t phenomenal job. We have it. This is also on a boom. Stand but I will show you that these lights here and the couple poles it’s all – I really need to get a lot of this done.
I am, though, prop maybe today I’ll do this. I didn’t like it I’m kind of getting sick of the orange behind us because I think it detracts from some of the colors, so we’re going to switch to just a gray background. We want to do maybe some color splashes that’ll be like a version 1.1. Changing the background is hardly a major change, but what’s important is the workflow and how this gets done and how the articles get produced.
So this is filming. That’s filming I’m going to splice in a little bit of filming off of this, so I can pull the whole project together and show you what’s going on, but I switch the camera on here right now or maybe I should do the GoPro I’ll do the GoPro. It’s got a better audio because I can put a microphone on the GoPro and I’ll walk around and kind of show you from the other side what this looks like.
So this is the aperture light. I know it’s kind of rigged in here that’s unfortunate, but we’re going to we’re going to put that inner right. That’s like! Shall we to do list? It’s got screw, it’s really solid, isn’t going where this is battery-powered. This is the aperture al5 tu es. So we can dial in if we need to do this, it’s on a tilts, it’s keep it plugged in. But if I unplug it like, I said it’s on battery, so you loses no brightness works really well.
This is the less expensive and hopefully the microphone doesn’t pick up too much noise shrimp. If I don’t get you close, this mic on the GoPro picks up a hum just generic cheap soft box from Amazon with for us and tubes in it, which is why it causes problems with this microphone. This I really like I’ll leave a link to this. This is the boom stand that we use for holding the camera up works really well, and this is one thing that’s really cool about this boom stand.
Let me break it down real quick and it drops down simple as that. Now it’s locked in place and then those legs fold up, so we can make it nice and small same with this. We hang the ear kind of up here when I’m not using it. That way, when we need more chairs and more places, which we keep the chairs all nice and neat kind of on the wall here. This is where all the extra gear ends up. So these are lots of connectors doodads.
There’s all our podcasting equipment, different ball heads. I really like these Joby heads they’re great, for holding things on this little case is where we put things like the GoPro and the other cameras. That’s how we do our time. Louses charging drone stuff the drones actually up there in shelf and when it’s all done, everything goes in here. We lock it that way when we have like get-togethers with random people coming in and out all the gear and all the little doodads.
No, I don’t want to be touching them. It is less I’m worried about people stealing it it’s much more, that people pick things up and touch it and lenses are super expensive, speaking of which that also brings me to this. This is my lenses, the Sigma 10 to 20, so this is for the real wide-angle shots. I really like this lens. I’ve had it for like ten years this, they call the Canon nifty 50. 50 millimeter.
It is a F 1.8. You can pick this lens up for like really cheap. It’s super inexpensive. I definitely like it quite a bit, but some of the other gears just miscellaneous stuff. You know lens cleaner stuff, like that. Maybe I’ll do a separate gear article. I do have a lapel mic in here and that’s what this is. I just don’t use it that often it’s kind of nice when you want to walk around and I get the microphone, but I don’t do that as much when I do.
These are the audio technica Pro 8 8 w RS pick these up for dirt cheap on eBay. I just dislike the fact that they use a 9-volt battery and they create a little bit of a history in the background so anytime I use it. I have to edit that out – and it annoys me, the Canon 70d itself is got the kit lens the 18 to 135, with the Image Stabilizer. We leave it off because it actually uses a little bit of battery when it’s on the tripod, but I use it.
Of course, if I’m trying to your free hand, which is pretty rare, free handing the camera unless you’re a really good camera man – which I am not that needed, so I try to tripod as much as I can. Even this has some shake now. This is just using HDMI out that goes up there. There’s your HDMI in the wall goes through. The ceiling comes back down behind the TV and it’s hard to see, but back there behind the TV is where all the lines come through to get that signal from over here to over there.
That’s simple effective though, and I like it here, is I dislike wires along the floor. If you didn’t notice, even these wires go plug in underneath and over here, so there’s nothing across our path. The only thing that kind of goes across the path is the audio cable. When I plug it into the Canon, but that’s life you’ve got a. I haven’t really found an easy solution, but that’s why we run it on this tall or boom stand from the Aston microphone up over back to the camera.
It’s easy enough for people to walk right under it, and this is that as tuned microphone, that has both the stereo and mono features low-pass filters. Some boosting the auto mode is my favorite because it automatically turns on when the camera turns on and it turns back off. So let’s turn all these things off and get to editing’s. That’s how we see where the open source comes into play and how holla’d all actually happens in case you’re wondering my GoPro setup, pretty simple: it’s a GoPro with one of them metal cages, a little hot shoe mount and the road might go and the stupid $ 50 GoPro adapter that you need to have to make this all work.
I have no idea. This is a cheap tripod that I bought all this off, Craigslist a guy who was just dumping it for really cheap – or at least this metal case. And this thing, so I don’t know what brand is some off-brand x-series, but it gets the job done for well doing what I just did with it. So it’s definitely handy for that. So for those of you see my desk before you know, I have a three desk layout, I’m going to jump to the other camera here and show you I zoom back out against the wall.
These are the three monitors, so everything’s kind of spread across all these screens, and now I’m going to insert that article into the article of me making the article now. This is actually could be showing me how to screw up making a article, because I added at the end of it and did a bunch of editing on how I did the editing and I don’t like the any of the ending of it. So I’m going back and re editing and Reese, placing just the ending of it.
I realized that I was a little bit too zoomed out trying to show three screens it’s how I edit and that didn’t portray well at all on YouTube. You just couldn’t see what I was doing, so I’m going back to dragging everything. So this is the three screen layout with well there’s different layouts here. This is a three screen layout. This is how my layout actually looks when it’s in process and then working.
This is a preview window on one side, but obviously this is really hard for you guys to see. What’s going on, I realized after I recorded me editing, but the article is edited, so I’m just going to cut out the end and redo that part. I tried it like this, and this is also hard to see what I’m doing so, we’re just going to drink everything to the middle screen and get rid of the webcam, so you can see what I’m doing for the editing parks this.
This is the hard part to show because there’s a lot that goes into editing, so I showed some of how I copied files and things like that, and that’s I thought maybe the interesting but maybe not imposed so I do is I’m done. I kind of proof most of my articles I try to prove from, but we’ll just bring over here and show you what I do so here is the editing part that I didn’t like this is going to get deleted.
Here’s all the stuff that came off of all the cameras I use so I had my GoPro. I had my screen capture, which I’m doing again right now, which was called. Finally, I just named it that you know my naming schema. That’s whatever makes it work for you, but what I will talk about is a couple little things, so one of them is – and I’ve talked about before I use sync thing: singing is backing up my article folder continuously, as I drop things in here.
I’ve did a whole article on that and whatever your workflow is making sure you have a solid backup. I like automated backups, specifically using the syncing tool and it backs up to my FreeNAS continuously, so it’s on my hard drive it’s backing up over to there. So that’s getting copied over then we just drag all these files, which I’m not going to direct them again, but you just drag them all in a kdenlive and then we drag them all to the tracks and I’m holding the ctrl key zooming in and out.
I got a tutorial on how to use Kate and live, and you know putting all this together now I started the intro of this article with a little classic 8-bit song. Let me see if I can change the view here so there’s my little preview that I dragged right there, so you can see going through editing the normally I edit on the other, monitor but, like I said, there’s not an easy way to 40-percent a dual monitor Layout it just unless you have a 4k and I export this at 4k.
You wouldn’t be able to read all this, but this is me cutting between all of them. You line up the audio, you get it all say: okay, here’s the audio! This is the GoPro article. This is the main camera article and it’s how I cut between them for the overhead shots and then I’m using OBS at the end, which I’ll drag my OBS screen over here, which it just goes to infinity, because it’s recording, OBS, recording, recording, OBS, recording and makes Kind of a cool effect in the background – and it OBS, is how I do my voiceover, so I got my setups here and this is what it looks like back on a three screen layout.
So let’s do this view. This is actually how it looks. I’ve Shrunk the screens over here, just going to give you guys an idea and a view, and all the voiceovers are recorded on a Yeti microphone in my little office with soundproofing here and very important soundproofing on the other side, because your voice goes this way. It reflects back so the back is to get rid of sound reflection at the back and the front and get rid of the sound reflection in front to kind of keep a dead area for the voice-over work.
But you know these tools are all free and open source and wonderful. Kdenlive is great OBS great cobia, cisco cross-platform, and someone will ask this kdenlive. I know they are working on a Windows version. Sorry, I’ve tried it that doesn’t work very well, it’s once it’s all done we’re going to render in process and then we jump over to GIMP and I have a template saved here in GIMP. That’s got the little black bar at the bottom and then I just go on the web and literally like the Canon 70d I typed in Canon 70d transparent there.
It is there I typed in Kaden, and these are just google image search while she this one didn’t need to be. I went to their website and it’s part of that’s their logo. Author header, I just grabbed it and you can actually just go copy image. Edit paste new layer – and you can get things added on there just like that and GIMP GIMP – is not as easy to use as Photoshop. It’s been a struggle because I’m a Photoshop guy, so I started learning it.
But if you started out, we get there’s some great tutorials you can find on it. I’m not good enough to make a tutorial on it, but I will tell you: I’ve been doing my thumbnails and everything for quite a while and editing the basics like what you’re seeing here in camp, and it’s worked out really well for me. So it definitely definitely can be done and once it’s all done, cuz GIMP saves in its own special format.
We file we export this and I called it how we make youtube articles, the gear and the process and the open source software and, like I said like going in-depth on the software, I have a tutorial on kdenlive already. I don’t really have one on OBS, but it’s maybe I’ll do one at some point. Obs feels almost self-explanatory. You just keep adding the different scenes like the webcam and then that’s what all these are.
Some are just microphones middle screen, webcam just left screen right screen. All my screens with me at the bottom and then you can just go here and if I want to put myself in the middle for this, but this is well technically. This is where I sit, because this is the the layout you’re seeing above is my three screen layout. That’s in here, so hopefully this was helpful kind of give you an idea how we do this.
I will leave links below to the tutorials. I have on how to use kdenlive how to get started with kdenlive in editing article. That’s probably the part break people find the most challenging recording stuff with OBS load it it’s pretty straightforward. Maybe I’ll do a specific tutorial on there, but OBS is a great way to do screen capture. I might do a specific review on a 7, but there’s a lot of mouths to die.
Cameras been around since 2013. So that’s it’s a I’m still happy with it’s a really great camera. I don’t really people like oh go, mirrorless yeah cool. Maybe I have the 70d. I don’t plan to replace it until it breaks. So, for now it’s a great camera and it’s not about the camera. It’s about coming up with teaching someone something the story, and the narrative is much more important. The tutorial the knowledge sharing is important.
1080 seems good enough for knowledge sharing, at least for me. For now, if my thought, my knowledge would look better in 4k great, I don’t have a 4k monitor and statistically most people don’t either. I know it supposed to be future thinking, but especially tech stuff. I have to keep producing because all this is completely irrelevant. Privation. That’s generally how it works. Hopefully, you found some of this helpful.
Give me an idea of behind the scenes how we produce YouTube articles, how this works. You know if you like to count in here like and subscribe. I will do my best to reply to all the comments. I’ve complained before about YouTube comments. Sucking I don’t see all the messages, it’s a YouTube thing. I’ve talked to other youtubers are the same problem. We also have the forums to help alleviate that over on Facebook links are below plus all the gear links and some of the details of all the stuff we use will be in here.
So hopefully this was helpful. I have a great day and enjoy get started on this open source. Editing if you’re interested in this I mean go, get these programs are free, start dabbling and playing and read my other kdenlive tutorials to get you started on this part of. It says the article edit, the press record, is easy. The editing I won’t lie. This is some this little effort that goes into this there’s a learning curve, but I think it’s worth it.
Thanks.
Videos are truly an awesome way to get the point across. Any type of content from your business is important!
Today we’re going to be talking about the Top five reasons why restaurants, food and beverage industry has failed. These are the five common pitfalls which you If you know can avoid More than 60 %, okay of restaurant owners, Within the first year of operations, fail That means that six out of 10 people that Run restaurant that has a beautiful idea who wants to be able to bring their dreams? Into reality, fail within the first year And a lot of the reasoning behind why they Fail can be avoided if only they know about these five common pitfalls Make sure you guys stay tuned and paid attention.
The number one reason why businesses fail: Is because of location? Okay, What I mean by that is location in terms of Not understanding the difference between destination, location and high traffic location, If you guys have an opportunity, definitely Check out this article, where I break that down in terms of what they truly mean In essence, what high traffic means is not A lot of people walk by and in turn, has the potential for more customers and whereas destination Is someone that actually has to drive over specifically for your restaurant and having A really high intent, A lot of people mistaken the fact that “, Hey You know what I want to pay $ 10,000 in rent and in turn, I’m going to be making $ 100,000 in revenue because I’m paying so much money for rent And this high traffic place.
” High traffic only means higher potential for Customers coming into restaurant Does not equate to more customers. You still need to be able to do the work. You still need to have a product market fit. You still need to have high visibility for Your food and beverage restaurant – It doesn’t make sense for a lot of people. Who? Actually pay super high rent and have this expectation that their business would Survive just because they have a lot of foot traffic Now, on the other hand, if you are running A destination location, people don’t understand that you need to do the right amount of marketing.
You need to be able to appeal and market And bring your food offering in front of your core and the ideal customers minds and eyes: In order for you to be, and actually entice them to come over here to your destination, Location Which, at the end of the day, if you understand The concept between the two and understand the different variables and elements that Come into play whether it be visibility, crime rate accessability, then you’re going To be able to prep yourself much more for success and you’re, going to avoid much more Pitfalls, So if you guys have not had the chance, definitely Check out this article, where I talk specifically on these elements of two different types of Locations Second reason: why fail within the first year, Is because of the fact that they don’t manage their team properly? What I mean by that is, first of all, you need To make sure you hire people that has the same aligned values? Okay, Because if the way you do things and the ways That they do things don’t align then you’re in big trouble, because you guys are not speaking.
The same language – and you guys are always going to butt heads, Okay And they’re not going to have that accountability They’re not going to have that common sense. Which you expect from them And in turn you guys, cannot work towards A better and the vision that you’re trying to create In this article we talk about. How do we actually Train, how do you retain? How do you create the right culture in order for you to be able To bring in and build an all star team Now, a lot of people also neglect treating Your staff like humans, And what I mean by that, is giving them a fair Wage giving them proper schedules so then that way they can actually do things outside.
Of work, Especially in the food and beverage industry, The schedules are so whack Whenever there are holidays, they’re working Whenever it’s happy hour, they’re working And they’re basically working hours that a lot of people don’t And at the end of the day, we as owners need To be able to take care of them because at the end of day, if we do take care of them, They are going to be able to take care of our business And in turn it helps us out right.
So in this article we talk about the five different Ways in order for you to be able to train them properly in order for you to be able To align with them and in turn have them run your business for you and not. Have you Being able to run your business day in day out and getting burnt out Some of the poor examples that I see with An initiative is that owners treat their employees like trash And what I mean by that is giving them minimum Wage always cutting on the benefits not giving them development opportunities, not Trusting them always looking over their shoulders and micromanaging them and, in turn, just think About it, If you’re on the other side of the table, How would you feel if you’re not treated with respect, How would you feel if you’re not empowered, To take actions, How are you actually able to actually take Any accountability if there is no trust in you, which is a reason why we need to empower Our staff For us at 720, Sweets, we have a $ 10 rule And what that means is anything below $ 10 Our staff has the ability to void to comp to actually give out products for that amount.
So then that way they can actually bring a Pleasant experience for customers, And on top of that, our staff feels like that. They have trust that they have power, that they can make a decision. They don’t need. To go through us and in turn allows them to be much more accountable for our business. Treating it like their own right Now for those of you that think that oh You know what what if that stuff ends up abusing this $ 10 rules, And I can tell you that for a fact that people Do abuse it, but those people they don’t align with us, because their values are different, They’re, not high in integrity.
They are not High in empowerment, And because of the fact that we, whenever We hire has this really strong sense of alignment in terms of values we know – and we already Vetted 90 % of those bad apples away from us, which is the reason why this $ 10 works very Well with us at 720 Sweets, And hopefully by me, sharing some of these Strategies with you you’re going to be able to actually bring back to how to treat your Team properly to empower them and to actually give them proper training.
So then you can build an all star team who’s. Going to be able to take care of your business while you’re away traveling taking care of Your family, The third reason why restaurants fail within The first year is because of ego, And what I mean by that is it’s: okay, if your Food sucks and that there is room for improvement. It’s okay, that your customer service is not The greatest It is okay, because customers are willing to Give you a chance if you have the right attitude, if you’re willing to improve And if you’re, putting in the resources for Development and constantly creating and nurturing that relationship and molding your offering Until it fits your customer’s palate, okay, People are okay with that, because we’re all Human, We all understand that, if you’re, genuine and Putting in the work and actually improving your food offering, then people are much more Likely to support you along the journey Why a lot of people fail is because of ego, And what I mean by that is, if I’m given a Feedback that my food sucks – and I just take it personally and I think that you know what These guys don’t know their stuff.
These guys just don’t understand my offering Well. If one person tells me that it’s not A problem, but if 10 people tells me that my food sucks, then I should better take action. To improve and tweak it, But a lot of business owners, their ego gets Into place and the ego gets into their own way and now they think that everyone is picking On them, The world is not fair and they’re, not willing. To adopt and change because they have this idea about their recipe is amazing.
Well, that’s the reason why they fail Same thing with customer service. They can take it personally. They think that you know what My customers are picking on me. You know what My process. This is something that I’ve been Doing for the last 20 years, It’s okay, because it’s been working for the Last 20 years Well, sad to say it. This is the reason why they’re failing because Their ego is in the way of them improving, delivering better customer service, better Food offering So, if you want to succeed, make sure your Ego is not in play, Make sure you’re able to take in that constructive Criticism and actually do something to improve upon it And that way you’re going to be able to actually Bring your customer along the journey with you for this whole development and in turn, Create an amazing experience for your customers.
The fourth reason why restaurants fail is Because they don’t know their numbers And what I mean by that is, do you really Know the costs of goods sold for your restaurant? Are you keeping tabs on the percentage that You’re, actually spending on labor And do you know how much rent actually accounts? For your total revenue, If you don’t know these numbers, these golden Metrics and these golden margins you’re not going to be successful, Because if you don’t know the numbers, how Can you know if anyone is stealing from you? How can you know how much you’re making? How can you manage your cashflow properly? For expansion, You can’t do any of this.
If you don’t know, Your numbers At end of the day numbers would allow you To actually manage your food costs properly So, for example, if you’re throwing away tons Of food because they go rotten because they get stolen, then at the end of the day you Know this I’ll give you an example: If your costs of goods sold So, for example, the burger costs $ 3 to make And you sell it for $ 10 and all of a sudden, your cost of goods sold raises to $ 5 and you’re Selling it for $ 10, you know for a fact that somewhere in between something is wrong: okay, Either you have been throwing away and wasting A lot of ingredients because you’ve just over ordered and now they’re expired.
Now you have to throw everything away or someone Is stealing from you because you’re buying, let’s say $ 500 worth of burgers, but in turn You only have $ 400 worth of ingredients What’s going on. That’s the reason why you need to know your Numbers So that way you can actually work on you Know what better delivery system to ensure least amount of spoilage Or you can work on hey. You know what Are people stealing money away from me? These are all things that you need to work.
On and that you can work on, if you know your numbers Same thing with scheduling, Are you working at the most efficient labor Force right, Can you stagger the amount of people that Comes in, Are you maximizing the amount of revenue that People can bring in And if you don’t know, your labor costs, you’re Not going to be able to control any of these elements, Which is a reason why a lot of businesses Fail They do not understand their golden margins.
So if you want to be successful in the restaurant Business make sure you understand and know your golden margins In this article we talked about. How do you run? And open a successful restaurant check it out here and understand your golden margins. The fifth and final reason why restaurants Fail, it is because they keep running promotions And what I mean by that is we see someone Being super successful running promotions, Our competitors are having lineups around The block, because of their big promotion, It’s buy one, get one free And then in turn you run the same promotion.
And as you’re running that promotion people are buying yet you’re, not making money and You’re, like “ Wow, I can’t survive if I keep running this promotion, but yet my competitor Is doing it.”, So that’s why you copied them And in turn you’re running yourself to the Ground, because you don’t understand why they’re doing the promotion At the end of the day, you need to really Truly understand the foundations of your business before you run any promotions at all, And what I mean by that is, if you’re running A promotion what’s the objective: Why are you running it? Is it to gain awareness for your business, Some franchise stores they have the budget.
To run these promotions to gain the awareness, It is a marketing cost and they’re. Okay with It But for your small business, is this something You can afford and is this a strategy you want to employ for your business, Whereas, if you’re running a promotion for The sake of gaining profit, then the type of offering would be different completely Different from a buy one get one free, It could be an upsell.
So, for example, if you create a meal bundle, And push it out to the market, then you can actually optimize the amount of people that Are buying from these things So, at the end of the day, having an understanding The foundations of how you run your promotion is key when running it. Do not just go blindly in offering copy of Competitors just because they’re offering something that you’re not So there you go off the top five reasons that You should absolutely avoid when it comes to running your restaurant.
Okay, The first one is bad location, not understanding. The fundamental of choosing the right location for your offering And second is mismanaging your team, not aligning With their values and not incentifying them not treating them like human beings, okay, Then, third, your ego and make sure that your Ego’s in check be receptive with people’s suggestion And fourthly, we are talking about the numbers, Know your numbers, So then that way, you know which lever to throw In order for you to maximize the amount of profit that you can make And, finally blindly, following what your competitors Are doing and running promotions without understanding the fundamentals Make sure you avoid all these pitfalls so Then that way, you can run a successful restaurant business.
