Knives and Processing Wood

What I wanted to do today was continue in our article series. We talked about yesterday, my humble opinion on knives, and I want to talk a little bit more and expand on some of those things that we talked about. Yesterday and show you some techniques and also again talk about some nonno’s for knife use. One of the things that we talked about a lot yesterday was using a baton with your knife, and basically, a baton is just a piece of hardwood and again I, like mine, you know about arm length from my armpit out to you, where the crook of my Wrist is, and it needs to be made out of a piece of hard wood that you can make contact with the back of your knife to create a better cutting tool out of your knife and give it more force.

If you don’t have an axe and you need to cut something that you can’t just push your knife through. Obviously you don’t want to chop with that knife, and we talked about that. So this becomes the thing that you swing and the knife becomes a solid point of contact that becomes a blade for cutting. So this is an extension of your knife. If you don’t have an axe now, if you have a saw, you may still need to baton.

But if you have an axe, you have no need for either. The problem is you’re not always going to have an axe in every situation and that’s why you need to learn or understand the limitations and capabilities of baton in your knife. So we can use any sized knife from the TLC that we talked about yesterday. All the way up to and including, like the Pathfinder Scout, with a big six-inch blade to baton, we can use the mores if we have to.

But again I tend to stay away from baton knives that are not full tang for fear that they may break at the rat tail and you may go for years without ever breaking a rat tail tang knife, but the time you need it. The most is usually when your equipment fails and I’m not going to take that chance and that’s what we talked about full tang knives. So what we’re going to talk about today is a little bit of do’s and don’ts with your knife, how to use your knife properly with a baton, how to not use your knife properly.

Obviously we talked about you never use your knife to swing like in hacks, because it’s very uncontrolled, it’s very unsafe and it doesn’t take maximum advantage of that blade. I can take a lot more advantage of that blade as a cutting surface by using it with a baton, then I can ever take by sewing it with my hand. The other thing I would never do with my knife is tie it to the end of the stick and make a spear, and I had a couple questions about that.

I’ve had people ask me about that before. Why don’t the knives that I use have the ability to be bolted on to something else as a spear? Well, if your knife is your only tool, why would you want to attach it to a stick? It could possibly come off of and now you’ve lost. Your only tool goes back to my same mentality of throwing knives. Why would I ever want to throw a knife and throw away the only tool that I have? I would never do that.

So I’m not going to use it for a spear at the same time by swinging it as something like an axe. I take a chance on doing damage to that knife for damage to myself. That’s unnecessary. If I can better control the way that knife cuts by using a baton and that’s what we’re going to talk about a lot today, stay with me guys, okay, so what I have in front of me is: I have a hickory sapling and this sapling is about Three inches in diameter at the bottom.

It would be something that I may use for a ridgepole or a construction portion of my shelter. If I were having to build something primitive, it’s a pretty tall tree, it’s probably over 20 feet tall. It’s got a lot of limbs on it. It’s got like I said about a three inch base. So let’s talk about how we would use our knife to process this tree depending on what we’re trying to do. Okay, so the first thing I’m going to do is I’m going to bend this tree over and decide how much of this tree? I don’t need because I’m not going to need the top of this tree for my shelter, although I may use the branches and things like that.

That’s why we’re going to limit, but I’m not going to use the top most crooked portion of this for a construction element, my shelter, so I need to get rid of part of it. Okay, so, as I said, we’re going to have to limb this tree, someone there’s no reason for us to use our knife necessarily unless we have to. If I’ve got a baton already, I can probably beat on many of those limbs off of there by striking against them and down and just pull them off.

If they don’t come off. That way, then I’ll use my knife with the baton, but I want to save that knife as much as I can first remember that in a situation where you are truly stuck down to one tool and that tool is your cutting blade, it’s your most important asset. So the least you have to use it the better off. You are okay, so I’ve got the one here that doesn’t want to come off. What I’m going to do is I’m going to straddle this tree and I’m just going to cut it off with my knife.

The best way for me to effectively do that now that I’ve got it ripped down, is just to put my knife on top of it and hit down just like that and cut it off now. If I’ve got an area where I can’t get the limb off for some reason with my baton, then I will choose to baton my knife through that limb and we’ll talk about that next. Okay. So if I have a limb like this one and this one would come off just by smacking it with this baton, but for sake of this demonstration, we’re going to use our knife, what I’m going to do is I’m going to put my knife in the crotch Of that limb, just like this going down the tree, I’m going to use this area of my knife and again the majority of what you do is going to be used is going to be using this portion of your blade.

So I’m going to get that thing as close to the bottom, as I can and just cut it straight off, just like that with my knife. If I get to that point, I’m good it didn’t take, but a couple of small taps to get that done, and I wasn’t swinging and flailing my knife around like some kind of an axe and that’s the point. Okay, now we’re to the point where we’re going to take the top out of this tree. The best way for us to do that is to bend the top in toward us and push down what that does.

Is that put stress on the bend right here once we’ve got that Bend stressed, we can then safely cut it and as long as we’re standing on it, it’s going to flip out of our way. So we’re just going to take our knife and push down in toward the material just like this and we’re just beaver chewing in just like this, with our knife and sooner or later, even on a live hickory we’re going to get that off of there.

Now we have no top on this tree. All we have is this point. I want to get to add a little less dangerous and just round it off a little bit and then we’ll let the tree go back up. Okay. This is a very good example. This live hickory that were working on right now is a very good example of something that you would use for a spring poll you’re going to have to get rid of all the foliage on this tree, because it’s going to cause resistance when it tries to spring Upward, but a sapling like this – that’s nice and big nice and tall.

This thing’s still like 15 feet tall and has a lot of pressure on it. That’s what you’re going to have to have if you’re going to try to do primitive trapping, because something like this will lift an animal off the ground. Remember if you’re, using primitive methods to trap with you’ve got to get that animal off the ground. Something like this will do it, so that’s a very good technique to take the top out of a tree take a few, the branches off of the tree of the sapling, so that you can then use that for a spring Pole.

Okay, so again, this is our pole at present right here. This is a heavy-duty pole. I’m going to pull this thing down and let’s string up one more time on you about where it would be if it were a trap, spring device, and you can see how heavy due to that piece of hickory is. That makes a great spring pole you’re going to need something the size of that if you plan to do primitive trapping okay. So let’s look at this pole as if we’ve decided, we need to take the whole thing with us now.

Maybe we’re going to use this as a structural pole for a shelter or a travois or some type of a device for dragging someone out of the woods if we needed it like a like a mature of some kind that we can drag like a trip away Or we’re going to use this whole thing for a spring poll, but we didn’t happen to get lucky enough that this great spring poll was right by where we want to set our trap. So we got to take this with us to jam it somewhere else.

In a log jam or bury it partially in the ground or lever it somehow so that it will work the way we want it to work at any rate, when we cut this down, we don’t want to leave. You know a three-foot stump sticking up out here. That’s going to be a killing device if somebody trips on okay, all we’re going to do with this tree is we’re going to pull our knife out. So I figure out which side of the tree I need to get on for you guys to see this.

The best we’re going to come down at a low level of the tree and we’re going to cut ourselves a v-notch in this tree a little bit of an angle. And I want to cut that in there. With the belly of my knife, or just behind the belly, and then I want to come in cut that notch out just like that and if I’ve gotten myself half way through the tree. At that point, I should be able to bend this sapling over and it should break.

If that doesn’t happen, then I’m just going to move over a little bit and I’m going to cut a bigger chunk out off to one side, just like this again trying to go half way through the tree trying to control this. Let you guys see it at the same time a little bit sure, but that’s okay! Now it’s going to come straight over now. I can take my knife and shear it off just like this, and if I get some stubborn bark I’ll just run that over the top and go straight down on it and now that tree is ready to go.

I just beaver tune around it until I could push it over and then chopped it off, get it all with my baton, the first two-thirds of my knife and never had to swing anything except this, which is much more controllable and less sharp than swinging this. Okay. So, let’s take a smaller tree in this example, is something that we’re going to harvest. We’ve got a triple triples coming out of the ground right here.

All we’re going to do is bend this down and find our Bend and then we’re going to be virtual with our knife. If we don’t have a big enough knife that we can beat on it, oh we’re a little bit leery of batana our knife. We can always be virtue this thing down and I’m going to show you how to do that right now. Okay, so maybe the knife that we have is not optimal for batani, but it’s still plenty sharp.

Well, that’s just going to dictate to us what size trees. We can pick on a little bit, but we can still get the job done. We just need to figure out where this tree is flexing. You can see it flexing right there and that’s what we’re going to use our knife we’re going to take advantage of that Bend and we’re going to start to cut into that Bend. Just like this, you see how that just bent right over and busted with just a couple of cuts once I’ve done, that I can be virtu my way back around until I cut that completely out.

Just like that. Okay, again we’ll go back to our small knife for a minute and say that we want to process this down to a certain length, we’re going to use it for a tripod stand. Whatever the case may be, we can’t sit here and hack on this thing. For a half an hour with our knife trying to chop it, or we can just take our baton and make a V cut in here over halfway through on this side, turn it over and do exactly the same thing on the backside.

Having problems getting to lay the way I want to house it in top it first, that’s okay, another advantage to topping the tree beforehand is easier to control, and then you can see. I just cut that to length with two cuts very easily snap that off and that things cut to length I didn’t have to swing my knife. All I had to do is very controlled and use my baton very simple, okay, well we’re sitting here with this.

Stick in her hand, let’s talk about another reason or another way that we can use our knife. Now that we know we have a ninety degree spine on that knife again, we’ll go back in a smaller knife, the trap line, companion and if I want to process this thing, maybe this is a dead limb and I want to process this bark for use. As a tinder bundle, I can’t scrape the bark with my knife just like this on the back side, or I want to just remove the bark down to the inner bark or down to the sapwood.

I can do that very easy. With the back of this knife – and I don’t have to sacrifice my blade to try to do things like the bark removal – I can do that with the spine of my knife just like this, and you can see how good that 90 degree spine removes that bark. If I want fine shavings, I can get those as well, and this will work the same way for dead wood as it does for green wood. That 90 degree spine allows me to get very, very fine shavings if I need them, and that is exactly what happens with your ferrocerium rod when you scrape it you’re, taking those fine shavings of magnesium and other materials and removing them, and they spontaneously combust with oxygen And ignite, and one of the things I was talking about yesterday in my article, was about not worrying about carrying a downes bar because you wear out the mat, the mag board.

You wear out the Ferro rod long before you’re, going to wear out the magnesium and what a lot of people don’t understand is because these rods have so much magnesium in them. You can’t always just scrape the rod to get a pile of shavings and those shavings are going to be highly combustible. You just got to be careful about it, so that you’re not creating spark and then you’re going to get the same thing you get with magnesium.

So I wouldn’t carry the downes bar because it has magnesium on. I just care extra feral rod, okay, so real quick. Let’s talk about “’but awning wood as far as processing firewood goes now. This log is about four inches in diameter. If I have a saw, I can cut those logs, but I’m going to be here all day trying to do this. So it’s a lot easier for me to baton this. If I don’t have an axe, if I have an axe, I can forego all of that.

But I don’t have an axe because I’m down to you know I just carried a saw and a knife because that’s all I thought I was going to need or all I have is you know well I’ve got then I may have to beat on wood and That’s all there is to it, so there are ways that you can beat on logs like this properly and there’s ways to do it, I’m properly or unsafely, and one thing that I want you remember is like I said this is a four inch diameter long and That is one of the reasons for the length of this knife.

Okay, and this is about a five inch log. Actually, so there’s barely any stick out on the edge of this log. So when I get this knife down into here that this log hasn’t split for some reason, I still have something to hit with my baton. Besides the back of my knife or the back of my hand, that’s the reason for that blade length. If I have a four inch blade and I’ve got a vlog, this big once I get down to the center of it now I’m either banging on the back of my hand or I’m banging on the handle, and I don’t want to do that.

So that’s another reason for the five to six inch blade length, because a four inch log is good fuel size. It’s also good size for shelter, building material. You should never have to process anything bigger than four inches in diameter in a woodland emergency or a wilderness emergency scenario. You should never have to process anything bigger than that, so big choppers and things like that in eastern Willa’s aren’t necessary.

You really don’t need them. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to lay our knife on the log and I like to split the center first and you want to you: don’t ever want to do this, you don’t want the belly of your knife or the point of your knife. Going into this piece of wood remember that this area is going to be used for skinning tasks, find carving tasks and all of those types of things, and it’s also the hardest to resharpen that area in the field.

That’s important thing to remember that some people, don’t realize, is a straight long flat like this is much easier to resharpen than a curved edge right here, even in a controlled environment. That’s the part that most people have struggle with. So in the woods it’s really going to be a problem, so I need to conserve that area of my blade, the best I can so I’m going to push my knife, no matter how big my log is all the way to the edge of that blade.

Now this one just happens to be wide enough. Then it’s going to take up some of that area. I don’t want to use, but I have no choice in that with this long. If I had a choice I wouldn’t be doing it, then I’m going to get I’m going to hold back on the handle a little bit to make sure my hands completely out of the way and I’m going to take a seating tap. I’m going to make sure that knife is seated in there very well, then I’m going to take a harder smack if my knife gets cockeyed I’ll, move off to the side a little bit and continue now you can see I’ve went down through this log and it Did not split it completely out.

Part of that is blade, grind issue. If this was a Scandinavian, grinder or a wedge shape, it would split this much butter. This is a flat grind, which is a narrow. It’s a full flat grind, which is a narrow wedge, not near as good for splitting wood, much better for processing meat and game again trade off. If I had the Pathfinder knife in this thing, it would have split wide open. So now I’m at the mercy of smacking on this tip, but if this tip wasn’t here, what would I do? I need there to be swinging this down to try to bust it and flail around my knife, or I’d have to try to pry it out of there start over again, alright be smacking back here on my handles so by having that little blade length out there, I was able to effectively split that log open.

If I quarter this, that’s going to be more than enough for fuel, that’s going to be enough! Cutting down of that material to make fuel! This is long burning fuel. If it’s hard wood, that’s going to burn a lot faster. If I’m trying to make fire material for starting my fire like a kindling pile, then I’m going to have to split this down considerably more because kindling to me is something the size of a pencil or less.

So now I’m going to have to split that down again into eights. Then I’m going to have to drop down and split it into 16 crossways. Then I’m going to have to split that down into 30 seconds. I don’t have to get out of control with this. These pieces here are going to be good kindling. That’s an important thing to understand, especially if you’re in a wet weather situation you can’t find dry material oftentimes breaking inside a log is going to give you the driest material.

Now you could choose to go down. One step further with this: no problem, if you were really in wet conditions, you want to insure yourself a lot of surface area. You could split that down it’s a little bit more to stuff like this and that’s going to be more highly combustible. Now, if I were really really worried about my fire and I had really extremely wet conditions, then I might take a stick: the size of this one that was going to be kindling, and I might take that and use that to make a feather stick and again, I’m just using my thumb for a guide here.

This is hard wood, so it’s not going to shave down near as well as a piece of soft wood, wood, soft wood wood, but I can still get their surface area increased dramatically by putting some fine shavings around this piece of wood. Just like that, I knock them off. They don’t do me a whole lot of good. I really need to stay on their partner. That’s a function of this wood being dry, but these kernels are going to give me increased surface area for the flames and again you know this is a pretty good sized knife.

This is no Maura. This is a big butchering knife that we’re using, but it’ll get the job done, not as well as a Maura, but it’ll definitely get the job done and that’s what counts. Okay, folks! Well, I hope you enjoyed this article today a little bit more about knives. My thoughts on knives, what you can do with your knife, if you got the right skill level, how to use your knife to process different types of wood, and things like that, you may need to do in the woods and the safest way to do that.

I appreciate your time your support, your views, everything you for me for my school and for my family I’ll be back to another article. Soon, as I can, thanks guys, you

Knives and daggers are awesome! Plain and simple, right? Let me say, I enjoy my dagger collection with a little music playing in the background.

Weekly Planner Spreads | August 2019

I know I really don’t do plant with me type articles anymore. I will link my playlist up above if you would like to read you know. What’s been giving me a lot of planner piece recently is just kind of filling it in when I get home and making it really work. For me, if y’all are interested, I am using an Erin Condon condon, an Erin Condren, binder system.

This year. I have the Navy cover and I chose the hourly colorful version and I really like that you can. You know, take these pages out and stuff like that. Like it’s super helpful, you know when you’re trying to decorate – or you know when I’m right-handed. So if I’m trying to write something on here, like I don’t bump into this, I can just pop this little sucker out. So it’s really actually helpful for me so anyway, let’s talk about this week, so this week is July 29 through August 4, and this was a pretty alright week did a bunch of stuff and my mom and I were kind of getting stuff ready for Niagara Falls, Which you’ll actually see in this like planner, I guess you’re not going to actually see Niagara Falls in the article.

I’m sorry, if you guys want to see the Niagara Falls, article I’ll link it for you guys, so we chatted about it. On Monday, we already had this plan like last year and then I got the hotel booked and everything, so it kind of like figured out a plan, and then you know we kind of just like went from there. I’ve been having some problems recently. Unfortunately, some health issues, so I have been working from home.

It’s like digestive stomach problems, so you’ll, probably guys, will learn more about that in September, because I have some more doctor’s appointments and stuff scheduled that I need to take care of. So anyway. I’ve been working from home a lot recently because of that, because you know my just had to be close to a bathroom which is gross, but it’s part of life. You know also on the third, I went to Ryan’s apartment with Doyle and we had a great time and Doyle now owns his apartment.

So anyway, so that’s a good time. Oh and then I also released my ticket information for my 20 year high school reunion, which is coming up this October. So it’s coming up really darn fast. So anyway, that was this week and then we get into the week of the 5th through the 11th, and this was an OK ish week. I actually, on Monday, had hail damage on my vehicle at work, so that was interesting, went to girls night with my friends and we wouldn’t had well tacos.

I don’t know. I think I just had rice. I can’t remember anyway, and then the next day I made my hail claim with my insurance company and doing all that good stuff. The next day I had a migraine, so I had these are my little migraine. People things anyways, so that was kind of a crummy day. On the next day I had to work from home because you know my well stickers. I worked on my packing list that evening and I wrapped up a gift for a friend, and then this was a really bad day.

It was a sick day. My mom came over to help me with some things and tried to sleep. Couldn’t do it my brother? Actually came over later on that day cuz he had to pick up some mail, but the nice thing about that Jay was my friend’s daughter was born. Charlotte was born that day at 9:29, so it was very exciting and then the next day I did some laundry. I made my collab list: the actually the wild for planners sale is going on right now, but this article is going to go up probably way after this, but I was making kind of my list and then I took a nap because clearly I wasn’t feeling of The day before and started to pack my bags and then I went to the twins game for a little while we didn’t stay the whole time.

But we went to the twins game for a little while and then I did some meal prep, so yeah and then the next week, I’m actually in Niagara Falls. I had to contact my doctor about my problems, so I need to talk to him about test stomach issues migraines and my prescription refills, so we’ll get into that in the next week. This I worked from home these two days because I just was not able to deal that makes sense.

Then, on Wednesday I actually was in to the office that day, which is great Rand at the post office, and then I went to Ryan’s apartment to drop off little Doyle dog, because Doyle was hanging out with Ryan from a man with the plans for the weekend. So that was fun. My mom and I left on Thursday morning bright and early and drove to New York, but the we actually stayed in Ohio on Thursday and then we basically after lunch, we got to Niagara Falls.

Our check-in was at like 2:30 or 3:00 or something – and we got there like right at that time, so it worked out great. So we actually went to like a little Niagara Falls movie, which I totally recommend. We had some Chinese food that night and then we went up on this. Like looking pier area. I don’t know what that’s called is probably totally wrong, but we readed the light, show and fireworks which is really cool and then the next day it actually rained.

Quite a bit in the morning and then we went over to Canada. We went to a really great Italian restaurant called mamma mias, which was wonderful. It was recommendation from one of you guys and then you know, did a bunch of other little adventures in Canada and then came back. And then we went on me to the mist I got super burnt and then for dinner. We had went to Hard Rock and then on Sunday morning we started driving back to Minnesota.

So we just drove – and I just put in like food stuff because it was just like that’s all we did and then we stopped in Illinois for the evening and then our tolls total from like the beginning to the end, was 74 dollars and 40 cents. We should have just flew there anyway, so now with this week, which we’re in this is today we drove for part of the day, and then I picked up toil kind of later on in the afternoon.

It was about three four somewhere in there, so I was able to stop by Ryan’s apartment, which was kind of on our way home, and he and then I unpacked did a little bit of laundry and that was kind of my Monday and then on Tuesday went To work, which was great all that good stuff and then I went to Abra to get a Hale estimate and all that good stuff, and I had to email acuity, which is the insurance company that I have once I got the estimate and then the next day.

Unfortunately, I had to work from home again I did have an appointment with my doctor and we have a bunch of things that we are now going to be dealing with yeah. So then my mom and I actually went to Applebee’s that evening and then I had to go to Walgreens to pick up a prescription next day I worked from home as well, and then I had to make a consultation appointment for a surgery I need to have, And then I also this was the first day of the wild collab sale, which is right here and we’re currently in it.

There are a bunch of shops that I shopped at right away, and then there are a few today that I am going to shop as well, because I just can’t help myself plus I’ll, be doing a haul for you guys to the next day I had my Culligan service come into my home. They just come into my home a couple of times a year and maintain my unit and things like that. So they do that when I’m not home or sometimes I am home, but whatever they know how to get in, went to lunch with some co-workers and then helped out.

My HR person, with some false store apparel items, ran to Target to get some groceries and such, and then I got sick that night again, so that was no bueno. The next day I actually got my acuity check from here from my estimate so figured that out. So I ran to the bank and did my deposit. I also went to Walgreens cuz. I had another pickup and then there was a planner meet up at the maple grove library which I went to, and then I went to Olive Garden with Ryan, from a man with the plans and then today this is this morning.

I had to place an amazon order. There was just a couple things I was missing. I was supposed to be going to a brunch with the Minnesota trio, which is Ryan from a man with the plans and Jodi from life’s organized chaos. I will leave their blogs down below for you guys if you want to check them out, because you totally should how ever Jodie’s plans changed. She has been doing a ton of traveling for work and she had to leave a little bit earlier than expected.

So we were going to reschedule that, so it’s been we maybe sometime in September that we will get together. I had to drop off things at the lab and you can see what that is. Um part of the doctor thing and then today I am filming. Look at this, I can do this um. I already did my sublet guilded subscription box, my September budget. I actually just filmed, and my August spreads that’s what I’m doing right now so yay so anyway.

That is it for this article. I hope you guys enjoyed seeing all of my spreads for the month of August in 2019. I know I’m not really doing the plan with meas anymore, but I just really enjoy coming home and just filling in stuff or things I know about or whatever it’s just like really helpful for me and if you guys are interested, I will link up in the Corner my what’s, it called my planner piece of article.

I really talked about kind of the groove and what I’m doing this year and how it’s helping me quite a bit so anyway, I will leave that up there for y’all, but anyway I am going to get to publishing no uh-huh, taking this footage and putting it In my computer and I’ll probably be doing a little bit of editing this evening, not sure when this article is going to go up, but it’ll go up a fairly soon for you guys, hopefully within the next week or two, and also I need to do a Little bit more shopping today before the wild, collab sale ends so anyway, that’s it for me.

Thank you guys so much for hanging out. I really appreciate it if you liked the article make sure to give it a thumbs up. If you want to see more from me, feel free to follow me on Instagram, the link is down below. I am typically on Instagram everyday, but clearly I don’t publish articles every day so anyway, I’m going to jet. Thank you guys for hanging out and I’ll see. You in the next article bye guys well folks, it’s time to kick it old school

They said hey what about adwords like what do you do on adwords and all that stuff, so I want to show you guys just To be completely transparent.

I have a lot more experience in facebook advertising, but I’ve been able to see some really good results in google adwords as well, so guys. Also, if you want this little checklist, I made for you all, i’m showing you breaking down exactly how I create my campaigns. Exactly what boxes to check to uncheck the bidding strategy and all that stuff just comment down below just come in adwords and Then also just for the fun of it comment with your favorite ice cream, queso with adwords and then one of your favorite ice cream.

Isn’t you know ice cream, then I Don’t know. Maybe we won’t give this to you here, but anyway guys. So you guys want that will make sure you guys get that alright guys. So this article is going to be Specific to setting up a article marking campaign, and so i’m going to give you the complete rundown, how to set the campaign, what boxes check, but all that different stuff. Now you know i’ll probably make different series that going through and hit different parts, the adwords platform, but there’s a lot of different things you can do with adwords.

You can set up campaigns for the google search. Google display network There’s a whole different, a bunch of different platforms. I’ll show you guys that here in a second. So, as far as like kind of the the beginner tutorial for google advertising, google adwords, This is going to be break down the article marketing side of things. Okay, so right here, this is kind of like you’re made advertising platform.

So if you guys are familiar with facebook, advertising Same type of thing right here, so we’re going to do is click over here on this plus button. Okay and, like I said guys, this is the new Platform that they’ve just updated. I think they have to like about a month ago, So, if you’re familiar with the old platform and you’re like man, i’m not really sure how to make this whole new platform. Work is pretty similar.

I don’t know why they always change things, but they do so. This is kind of like the quick rundown. Alright, So we’re going to do is we’re going to click on new campaign. Right here, you guys Can see, is to select a campaign type so similar to how you know. Facebook advertising starts out, And what we’re going to do is article right here, but you can see all the different options, so you have search.

So if someone types in to the search bar google says like basketball, shoes or whatever they’d be able to pop your ad right, there display is basically like banners on all these different ads or i’m not as sorry, banners on different blog sites shopping. Obviously, if you’re going through and shopping and universal app, that’s kind of like going through and pushing app, installs and being on different apps and all that stuff.

So What we’re going to do is choose article right here. Okay, now guys i’ve tested a little bit both on both of these, but what I like to do is typically product and brand consideration. Okay, so brand awareness rhesus is just more of like going through and getting mass exposure for as little as possible product and brand consideration. I’ve found like when you’re going for conversions and leads This is the best way to go through and set that up right.

So we’re just going to click on this all right. So then, if We’re going to come down, says campaign subtype, obviously, if you’re going through and doing e-commerce Or shopping, if you got like a shopify store, you’ll probably want to click on shopping. For me, what i’m? Just going more for like Lead generation of getting people to opt-in to you, whatever landing page, i’ve got Set up, I like to do standard consideration right here, okay, So what we’ll do now is we’ll just click continue and it’ll.

Take us into this aspect of things where we choose like our budget, we choose which audience we want to target and You’ll see we’ll be able to hit a bunch of other things and, like I said guys on that little spreadsheet, I had for you guys where That little pdf download, as I mentioned, if you guys type in adwords, plus your favorite ice cream i’ll, get you guys that, because I break down Exactly all these different things, even when you get an additional settings, what to do there and there’s some important things where, If you don’t, do it the right way, you’re going to end up losing a ton of money? Alright.

So for this example, let’s just say: we’ve got the test campaign right, So we want to just give the campaign a name and then, as far as the the daily budget, this is obviously up to you of what you go through and start with, like I like, If you’re getting started, just barely i’d, say, maybe try out ten to twenty dollars somewhere in there. I typically start out around 25 to 50 dollars depending on the campaign, and what my end goal is how big the audience is, but for this example, let’s just Say we’ll, say 20 bucks per day.

All right also, you guys, Can see hey i’m going to set a campaign total, so I only want to spend $ 100 or $ 500,000 or whatever the number is, so you can switch that up right there, All right. So if you come down here to delivery method method, so standard is you can see right here? Suspend your budget Evenly over time. Okay versus accelerated! Hey it’s going to spend your budget as quickly as possible so like, if you’re, targeting the words basketball, shoes and And like from 7 to 8 a.

M. First thing in the day, there’s tons of people searching that it’s going to go through and show your ad as Many times as possible right out the gate, But then the rest of the day. It’s not really going to show your ads, so I like to go through and I like to use standard, alright guys so for start and end dates right here you can see you can start as soon as possible. You can select a certain date in the future and an end date as well, so you kind of set that up how you want it.

If you want Just ongoing you just say you know as soon as ads are approved and then there’s no end date. Well, you got To go back in and make sure you’re keeping an eye on it So that it doesn’t go through and spend tons of money, and you have no idea – and You owe a lot of money to google now. Okay, so don’t do that And that networks guys this is huge kay. We want to do youtube, search results, Youtube articles and we want to uncheck article partners on the display network right.

So the display network Honestly is more beneficial for google because it gives them so much more traffic To work with, but it’s kind of a different beast. Okay, so we wanted on youtube articles and youtube search results, because that keeps everything within youtube’s platform. Okay, on youtube.Com. There’s opposed to the display network, Where that gets into a wide variety of different sites, and we don’t really know what’s going on there, so we just want to Stay away from all that all right.

So now, if we come down to languages, obviously like if you’re running something in english or spanish or portuguese, Or whether the languages I like to just go through and make it so it’s specific to whatever language i’m doing if you’re speaking english in the article, you Don’t want somebody speaking like hebrew or something like that reading your article, because if i’m not going to understand it right and then locations, obviously you can do you know states, united states, canada.

This is all specific to you and your business and what you, where you’re, really trying to target ok bidding strategy. I always just leave it at maximum cpv devices. Although eligible devices just leave it there, frequency capping. Ok, hey guys! All of these options there’s a little button that I clicked a little bit earlier to says, show more all settings and that’s these are only going to show up If you click that.

Ok, so don’t skip Over this, because this is huge and you can actually waste a ton of money if you’re not doing this correctly. Ok, So what we’re going to do over here, it says, set a limit to no To how many times your ads appear to the same user right so, let’s say You’re going on there and let’s say: there’s like this 20 year old kid. So, let’s just say me: i’m going on there, i’m looking for a new basketball shoes right like got all the shoes in the back, i’m always looking for new basketball shoes.

I love those and i’m searching all these articles and you’re, saying like i’m going to target people with this article for people looking for basketball, shoes, ok and I go through and I type in you know: basketball shoes and I readed one article and it’s like lebron Basketball, shoes, kobe, the basketball, shoes, michael jordan basket. I got all these different ones and I’m seeing your ads so many times and it gets to a point where it’s like.

Ok, it’s really annoying keep on seeing your ad and I get the point. I know what you’re talking about. I know what you’re you’re trying to get across right, So we want to go through and limit the amount of times. One person is going to go through and see our ad everyday and The number of times it’s actually going to pop up and show to them. So what we like to do is come over here and say: Set a number of impressions now usually like to do two and the number of views I usually like to do one or two Okay, so one or two I don’t know, let’s just start to in Here for right now, and then, if we come down here, let’s say so: content Exclusions.

Okay, this is another big one. Okay, I hope all of the frequency capping made some sense, because this is really important because a lot of times when people go through and search for a specific result or keyword or whatever they’re doing a lot of searches so like. If your ads going to keep popping up, people keep popping up, just gets annoying okay, so jumping over here to content exclusions. What I like to do is I like to exclude all mature audiences and obviously depends on your offer, depends on what you’re doing, but typically for most offers all that stuff.

You just don’t want like that. The mature type articles for your ad to be displayed on there. It’s typically like not the best traffic, then also. I also like to opt out of all three of these. So embedding youtube articles live streaming articles in games. Okay, it’s like someone’s playing a game. They don’t really care about your ad sorry they just they just don’t. If they’re reading a livestream article there and they’re interested in what’s going on, live they’re, not interested in your ad okay and then embedded, you see articles you don’t know where those are going to be embedded.

Okay, so I like to go through and uncheck those or check all those, and then typically this obviously is depending on your audience. I also like to go through and check all of these Sensitive content right. So this you can see all these are beta sexually suggestive. Profanity sensational shock you, like all that stuff social issues like you’re catching people a lot of times and all that stuff and pretty like emotional Situations, so they’re not really in the right mindset to go and react and respond to your ad right.

So, like I just like To leave it out of there There’s a lot of traffic on google, you don’t need to go through and have every single person seeing your stuff. You want to catch them at the right time. Okay, all right so ad schedule all right! This is kind of self-explanatory, But you can say hey. I want to run all day every single day and that’s great, because you’re able to see okay is it going to work best on the weekends on the like on Midweek or what days are going to actually work best.

So I typically like to start out by just saying all all days every single day, however, for me, I like to run live ads for live trainings. Okay, so I do my live trainings every thursday. So what that means is like, if i’m running an ad on thursday right After the live training, they got ta wait to the next thursday. It’s like it’s almost like too far out in advance, So usually like. I don’t run my ads on thursday, friday saturday and I usually start like on sunday, and so I can say, like hey, I want to run on monday from let’s say just 12:15 a.

M. To 11:45 p.M. We add okay and then we just go through and we Do this for Tuesday then wednesday, then thursday, they’d, like all the days that I want to run them it’s specific to that, the time zones k and honestly like It doesn’t. I haven’t seen a huge difference if you’re like running them in the middle of the day or the middle of the night, Or whatever i’ve seen sign ups on both. So it kind of just depends on it’s more.

It’s more you’re targeting Okay, which we’ll get to here in a second right, so that those are kind of like the initial. That’s that first top half now we’re going to do is create our ad group okay. So this gets into more of the Targeting of like who we want to specifically target okay, so our ad group name we’re going to say test demo and then the maximum cpv Cpv bid. What does that mean? So it means the maximum cost per view.

Bits like how much you’re willing to pay For someone to view your article so like you can see right here. Maximum cpu cost per view bid. It’s the highest amount, you’re willing to pay for someone to view your article ad, so Google adwords is all a bidding system right so like if you go through, and you only have so much so many like people reading each article and let’s say you’ve – got this Basketball shoes, article and somebody’s willing to pay 20 cents every single time.

Somebody read that article okay versus another person might be willing to pay 30 cents every single time that purchase someone reades that article so based on this person’s daily budget right here. The person that is willing to pay 30 cents they’re going to be in first place and they’re going to take Priority to all the people, viewing the article before the 20 cents person, okay, but then, once that person has spent their $ 20 at a budget, then This person is now going to take priority.

Okay, so that’s kind of how it works, just a bidding and if you’re not getting abuse, You want to up your budget if you’re getting like you know, if you’re spending too much money or whatever you can like lower your budget, a little bit where I typically Like to start out with this – and this obviously is really depending on how competitive your niche, how competitive your market is, I like to start out with 20 cents per view? Okay, if you’re spending more than that you’re, probably spending a little bit more than you really need to.

However, if it’s a really Hot niche, it’s very competitive and you’re, not seeing the beus, you might need up it like. I do have some Where I go up to, like, I think 50 cent’s alright, but that’s for every single person to read your article. That’s not a lead! Okay or that’s! Not even someone clicking your article to your website. It’s just somebody. Reading your ad okay sign easement that I hope you guys get that right there can this popular articles a bit adjustment, you could say: okay, there’s like a really hot popular article like it hits trending or whatever They say hey.

You know. If there’s a popular article, are you willing To spend a little bit more to like be shown on there, and so you could say: hey i’m willing to spend 50 % more 75 % more or whatever? I think we don’t do that. I don’t really worry about that, just because there’s enough other traffic other places that you don’t need that, okay, So moving on guys here to the people who you want to reach the demographics okay, this is getting a little bit more into the targeting okay.

So we can say: okay based off your products, and this is going to be a little bit different for everyone right i’ll show you guys what I do to be a little bit different for everyone. I real estate agents, real estate brokers, loan officers, mortgage brokers, all that so female male unknown doesn’t really matter. Okay, like doesn’t matter the gender then over here, typically, if someone’s 65 plus for my market they’re – probably not really going to be actively doing stuff, and I go into like talking about technology stuff, and so sometimes that could be a little bit over their head and A lot of times, if someone’s 18 to 24 they’re, almost a little bit too young to really go through and connect and see my stuff whereas like if you got a shopify store, if you’re doing something else, You might be wanting to target more of the younger Crowd yarn community so based on your product, based on your offering what you’re doing you know just go through and target those those ages right there, okay, parental status, I don’t mess anything there.

You can and then household income just Because i’m taking people to a live training and i’m selling like a fairly high ticket products. I don’t want people like if we don’t know their how sold income. I don’t really want that that traffic, because it’s unknown right and then the lower 50 %. I don’t want just kind of like freebie secret type people. I want people that are willing to invest in their business into themselves and what they’re doing and then sometimes I uncheck this one.

It’s kind of like a back and forth thing, but basically they soft, like the the product, amount that you’re selling and who you’re working with you can go through and check on or off the household income items All right so now guys here is where we can Get detailed on who we want to target okay, So the audience is so you only want to do one of these four Okay, you don’t want to do all of them. You want to just do one of the four and I’ll show you guys kind of how to go through and use each and every one of these okay.

So the audience is So this one, this affinity, okay, that means groups of people based on their long-term Interests. So you click on this and you go through. What you have to do is you’ve got To create an affinity audience first. I wouldn’t really start here. I like i’ve Tested a little bit, but I haven’t really gotten to this a lot. So I would just like leave that to the side for just getting started, Intent and life events.

You see like in-market audiences case so like they’re in market for auto moto’s automotives business services. It’s like you can go through and target like they’re in the market for real estate right software. You got all these different options right there remarketing. This is really cool because you can remark it to everyone: who’s readed, one of your youtube articles before anyone the subscribe, you blog, you can remark it to anyone.

This visited your website. Okay, so, like you could set up your google, google tracking, your google analytics on your site and then anyone that’s visit your site, your blog, your landing page, whatever you Can remark it to them on google. So now You can go through and show your ads to them on google, on facebook on instagram and that you’re like everywhere right, so that’s pretty cool. You can also upload a customer database.

You can see youtube users similar audiences, that’s kind of like facebook’s look-alike audiences. Just like once, you upload, let’s say everyone, who’s readed, your youtube articles like let’s say us, maybe a thousand people. What google do is they’ll automatically create, what’s called a similar audience to the people that have already readed your article Okay, so it has to get to a certain level as have so many people in the audience.

I want To say it’s a thousand, not a hundred percent sure on that, but then they’ll automatically create it. Okay, you don’t have to go through and create it. They just automatically create it. There is so you can see. I’ve got several similar audiences based off leads and other things that i’ve uploaded there. Okay, So those are kind of the audience’s. If you pick one of these, you don’t pick any of these all right.

That’s that’s my words of wisdom right there, okay and then you just skip down here to create your article ad, which we’ll get to that here in A second and then or you can go through and say, hey. I want to target a keyword. Okay, so the keywords would be like so, for example, if I want to type in basketball, shoes, kobe, basketball, shoes or lebron, whatever you know, it’s like you go through and I wouldn’t really type in more than five keywords per per ad group that you’re creating right Here, just because what happens typically is google will go through and They’ll see like oh basketball, shoes getting a lot and they won’t even really go through and show it to these other keywords: he’ll just show All to this specific one right here, okay, So I probably want to do that or you go suits through it.

You can see you know enter enter a related website to get keyword, ideas. It’s like you could enter in your competitors website and get some ideas, or you know your product or service or whatever, So some cool things you can do right there. So basically like when someone types in basketball shoes, your article would show up as a article ad when you’re setting that all up okay. So now any topic right here.

This is pretty general. I would stay away from this in my personal opinion and I’ll. Let you guys know so actually i’ll just share with you right now. I would start out if you guys are just going to start out. I would start out with the audiences and remarketing remarketing people have already readed your articles. Your customer list, people visit your website. That’s going to be your warmest best bet, you’re, going to get your best results right out of the gate.

Okay, then, from there I would probably go through and maybe target some keywords And then even the next one is placement. So this topics you Can see right here, people are interested in like games or health or hobbies or whatever you’ve got all these different options and then And remember guys, if you choose topics you’re not going to use either one of these other ones you’re just going To pick one or the other, okay and then the placements you can say, hey I want to go through.

This is a pretty cool. You could come in here and say I want to choose where my article is placed. So I have you gone through and say I want to go through and search for youtube blogs, youtube articles, websites or whatever. So we can say: hey basketball, shoes, okay and then, when we type that in we can say okay, we want the youtube blogs or youtube articles. So we look at this and look at this. This is going to be the top searches for when you type in basketball shoes, so we just click all of these and then, if our bidding is high enough, would somebody like this is basically a quick and easy way to get ranked number one in google? For your article right, because all these articles are already ranked on the first page for basketball shoes, so if you want people To see your stuff, all you got To do is shoot that article And go say hey.

I want to my ad to run on these specific articles on page one, so you guys So say: basketball, shoes or lebron shoes or something like that. Let’s say something, and they would come in here – choose all these and then Anyway, so you can’t see the idea and you can choose all these articles go through and show your stuff To you. So, like i’ll, usually pick about twenty to thirty articles in there to show my my ads to you just so like there’s enough traffic enough people reading, but obviously that’s basis based off of your keyword that you’re typing in here in the articles that you’re choosing alright.

Alright, so now we’re getting into the ad portion. Okay, so let’s just choose a random article. Okay would Obviously you want it. You want to choose your article, you don’t want to choose just a random one. So, like let’s say you tell, I mean, read a lot of basketball articles lately, we’ll just choose this one right here, But obviously this is like what you want to do. Is you want to go through and use the article that you uploaded, because this Could be your ad right and when you load it, you want to make it unlisted? Okay, so that not everyone on your blog seen it because it’s probably a little bit different type of ad or article than your typical articles on your youtube blog.

So you want to make it unlisted so that nobody else can see unless they have the direct url. So now we’re going to come over here we’re going to throw this article in here and then what I do is I do the in-stream ad, alright and then i’ll just show you guys the actual landing page. I use right here. Okay, so i’m just going to come in here, throw in the url Final url display and give it an ad name and hit save and continue and you’re done.

Okay, now really quick, let me hit a few things on the landing page because google’s actually, when you’re setting up these adwords campaigns, they’re pretty specific about what you can do, what you can’t do and it’s kind of a pain in the butt. Sometimes sometimes you got to get your your adwords rep on the phone and kind of have them look at stuff? Okay. So if you look at this, first of all, i’ve got a star up here.

Okay, so I said the simple system of real estate agent newbie use the three extra commissions just 37 days. Now Google will look at that and if I don’t have a star up there, they’re going to be like oh you’re, Promising that and not every person’s going to get that which is true like I i’m going to percent agree. That’s not true that every person is going to get it, but i’m saying a real estate agent newbie, i’m not saying that everyone, i’m not promising that they’re going to Get it.

So then you got To come down here and say: a disclaimer okay. These sales figures state above are my purse sales figures, so something kind of like that does basically a little disclaimer and then even like right here, jason where’s ab real estate lead generation specialist in the last 12 months to generate over twenty thousand five hundred real estate Leads I Even have to put a disclaimer on the stuff that I say: i’ve done.

Okay and then every single one of these bullet points. I put a disclaimer just some different things like that. Then you need your contact information. You need an email, you need a phone number, you need the terms of service privacy policy. These things are all I kind of pay in the butt, but they are What you have to have them to get approved and second for legal purposes. You also need to have them okay, so those are a few different items on your landing page or whatever pace you’re sending people and if you’re doing e-commerce like a shop, buy store.

You still need that stuff. You still need contact information. You still need terms of service privacy while all that stuff, so it’s not just if you run into like a landing page or whatever. Okay, So you give an ad name. You hit demo you’d hit, save and continue’ and You’re done all right so anyway, guys. Hopefully that was helpful as far as like the complete adwords tutorial for beginners here at 2018 kind of with all the new updates that google has with their advertising platform.

So If you guys have questions, go ahead and leave a question down there in the bottom, also, if you guys want i’ll, show you guys this one more time, this little pdf right here, just comment down below and come in adwords and then comment whatever your favorite Ice cream is sms before and I could get you guys that downloads so that you guys can have that is you’re going through. We’re also excited to announce the tower of power. Competition create your arcane sanctum on world anvil, and the writer of our favorite entry will win awesome prizes, including loot, straight from us more info in the description. Let’s pick out a place because you promised oh and we could build something special, let’s build our own little web DM arcane sanctum, oh okay, right yeah, sure the summer home can wait.

The idea of a mages tower yeah the tower in which a bearded wizard with their stars and moons hat and robe. You know retreats to to ponder the mysteries of the universe, pretty classic trope and fantasy right. You can’t change reality without doing a little bit of research and you got to have a place to do it place the hole to hang your head right towers feature heavily in in fairy tales and sort of myths and legends.

You know at some point they get mixed up with the archetype of the wizard, the caster, the the court Vizier yeah. You know that kind of thing and towers and magic and and the like, seem to go hand in hand and it’s one of those things where in your games and your home worlds, you know you might like you know, you know it’s a wizard’s tower or whatever You know you don’t put too much thought into it hand, wave it or really just kind of present, only one type of wizards tower.

Then thinking about your the sanctum sanctorum zuv, the world. The, the places of power that the caster’s retreat to to work their mighty magics. Those locations where supernatural forces come together and great and wondrous things are possible are a step above just the the lonely stone tower that has a crotchety old wizard. You know yeah, I mean why just make a regular tower when you can create a dim.

I plane in between the heartbeats of a yet to be born god, yes, yeah exactly, you might need that kind of space for the sort of magic that you’re working exactly majora see. You know a place where magic confers like rulership or authority, then maybe the the tower is a you know: a physical symbol of that, in the same way that, like castles, were in medieval Europe, a projection of power of physically imposing space.

That that says something about the person that lives there. That says something about their authority and their majesty and their magnitude. Someone call it a fallacy, oh sure, but you have the chance to imbue those things which, in our own world, were just symbolic with like real magic, a place that has power. You would construct something there to make use of that power. That confers something magical and has a long history in D & D right, birth right setting is a game where you know your ability to rule it be a you know.

A figure of authority is based on that certain type of magic. You can kind of take that and say well what, if it was, you know the ability to to work miracles and spells that you know gives anybody a reason to listen to you. Therefore, the places where they live and do their magic would be different than just something else. We’re thinking about. Well, let’s start talking about those places where they live and the first thing is going to be location, location location.

Where, where do you build this thing? Where, indeed, right, yeah and just any old Glen any old him yeah, I would say absolutely not right like in the same way that you know a castle, is strategically located to project power and and be physically imposing and also serve as a place of sanctuary. You might look at the magical, geography of your world and think I you know these are the locations where towers, sanctums, layers and other sorts of places, dwellings that your casters would inhabit that they’re going to be so, they might be say, planar confluences right.

We always talk about. You know the walls between worlds being thin or the the membrane of dimensions. That kind of the idea that the other world is just right there on the other side, maybe it’s a stretch of swamp where anyone can see goes the power of necromantic energy is strong there, because the link to the underworld is very close. It bleeds through into this world or any other number of other planes that could influence the prime aterial right.

Oh yes, I’m thinking like if you were at one of the absolute poles of the planet. If you could be right, there would be something very connected to either either the planes of order. I don’t know just that that kind of geographical symmetry hmm does your world have just regular ley lines, yeah just these these threads of energy, that that thread, the landscape. Right and they could be, they could be tied to the schools of magic right.

You could say, like yeah the ley lines, sort of enhance certain schools or certain types of spells, if you’re, using this sort of, like the spell tags that you know, certain online tools provide its are like ways to organize your magic in your world. Then you could say, like all summoning magic, maybe is enhanced by this particular type of ley line and therefore confluences of ley lines where it’s like summoning and divination and blasting and like those would be significant locations in your world and maybe they’re like fought over and Who has access to them and and which caster controls that location as a matter of politics and intrigue and backbiting yeah? And I mean anytime, you take you start investing.

You know investing something in real estate. You up the stakes of things and you you, you make enemies, people are going to be upset, that’s something that you took that’s denied to someone else, and so any number of places could be up for grabs. Also, in that same regard, you want to build a tower somewhere, and maybe you found a place that no other was it figured out right, but you are in the lands of this other Kingdom and you have to deal with more mundane territory alike.

No, no. I want to build a tower over here: yeah they’re, going to be able to see it, so you got a beseech the king or the landowner. Whoever and you know always her just the deed in exactly Riley or political concerns are like that right. You know you can’t just come here and build something you know, and so you can like complicate matters like that and then maybe having access to these places of power becomes a matter of geopolitics and just something that the kingdoms and nations of your world engage in And consider as their war aims and part of diplomacy, the world of razzle sin is much like this.

I sort of took a the idea of ley lines. It was like. Alright, there are these currents of magic over the world and some places say the island that razzle sin has her hut on is one such place. It masks. You know people in the same way that, like a non detection, spell, would and enhances illusions and things like that, while you’re on the island there’s an entire empire of mages who recognized this pattern across the world and began building cities and and places that they would Come together to work their magic and slowly over time, had a network of these, and instead of it being one that’s tied to say, the physical geography of the world and say, like I don’t know like the Roman Empire’s like frogs around the pond of the Mediterranean, Is one story and put it: this is more about the magical geography of the world and if you looked at it on a map, wouldn’t really wouldn’t really make sense, you’d be like man that part looks really difficult to defend or yeah.

Why in the world, would you all be clustered here, it’s all about the magic right and they have a continent spanning Empire based entirely on where the ley lines are or what happens when the magical confluence is like a thousand feet in the air right yeah? How do you get there? How do you build something energy, or do you have to talk to the cloud Giants now to like do a whole thing or there’s some air elementals, you can summon yeah.

Do you build a thousand-foot tower? The only part that’s magical is literally the very top it’s just. Everything else is just a really long way to get on the spot, but once you do it’s going to be epic right and maybe there’s like you know, stories and legends of all the attempts to make harnessing the power of this place work. You know this is the part where, as storytellers and game masters and world builders, we break out of the normal mold with these places, if you’re, using something like a game system to help create your world or or to present it, you have to abide by certain Rules sometimes, or it’s very least, you know, you’re expected to you know your players might say like oh well, you can’t always just make things up or or they want justifications for them.

Having places like this lets, you say like well, the normal rules don’t apply here. Something’s different and whether you’re not you’re, basing it on a planar cosmology that influences the place the past history of something maybe a you know. A tragedy occurred there and sorry types of magic now or more more heightened right. Oh yeah, like history of a place like an epic battle, I mean we already think you know.

I’m like you know that certain battlefields are haunted, but what, if they’re haunted with the vestiges of the magic that was used there? Oh god, I know. That’s a big part of land between two rivers, yeah literally the whole thing literally. The whole world is kind of like that, and so you have like living spells and and if it fits in, say the mourn, land and Eberron or would fit in a dark Sun. And it probably has a place in land between two rivers in there.

And those are places were magical, you know, devastation or just destruction has absolutely destroyed the place, and maybe your place of power is. It reflects that and a desolate wasteland, because it’s constantly wracked by violent elemental energies that scour you know the land or the opposite. It’s a verdant forest and then otherwise you know kind of lifeless place and maybe that signifies that there’s a link to say the Fae wild they’re spilling out yeah, I just filling out or like particularly fertile soil, because it’s coming straight from elemental earth.

And you know it’s full of its, you know whatever it is in your world that makes plants grow, you know, was the site a place where a great spell was once worked, and now it impacts the location, maybe a particularly hard-fought battle in your own campaign. That happens say it, you know mid-levels or something becomes one of these places and speaking of the lam 20 rivers, we had a character parish and battle there and where they were buried, has since become a place of peace and sanctuary in part, because of spells that Were cast when the character was buried there, but also because it just makes sense for the character and they were interviewed.

They were a tenth level druid when they died, that you don’t have that kind of power. Just doesn’t go away, it stays with you and it would influence the place so holy sites. Tombs may be. The graveyards of magicians are secret places because their magic doesn’t go anywhere, it stays with them and you you don’t want that just lying around, so you know all of these things. You can use to create a place of power and then like alter the rules of magic in your world, and that’s just the start of this, though right yeah, I mean you guys start ground up so now we start moving up or move down.

Maybe you want to go underground, but what is it what’s its purpose right? What are we doing here? Jim? You know, you found a location in your world. You know cliff tops with shrouded by fog and cloud and the violent energies of air and earth. You want to say experiment with some spells that deal with those conflicting elemental energies, and so you build a location there to experiment, or maybe you want to use those winds and, and you know, rock slides and the like as a deterrent.

You just want some peace and quiet. You know like what you want out of the location or what, rather, what the Creator wants out of it. It’s going to say a lot about how it’s built is this uh, the country villa of a court mage who you know likes the the peace and tranquility of this place, that it masks prying eyes? It just has a soothing effect on them, but it’s not a fortification. They’re not doing like in depth spell research here, but it is like the abode of a wizard or something like that.

So it’s magical in and of itself that’s very different than the sinister skull. Sorcerer, who you know weaves nekron, to rituals atop of the Obsidian tower. You know over the cliffs of acid kind of location, yeah, oh yeah, much different. My wizard would totally just wouldn’t build a tower on top of the peak just the peak of the mountain yeah. That’s all his tower. Yes, maybe like a dwarven wizard like that right right from the outside.

It doesn’t even look like anything suspicious, but the inside, if you were able to see it’s riddled with workshops and foundries and they’re all the rune smithing that they need to get up yes, building a race of atomic super dwarfs. Then we will rule the world that kind of cavern space yeah, it’s being tracked, so research, libraries, collective, you know we’re assuming a single occupant and you know creator.

But maybe this is like a cabal of mages or something yeah come together for a particular purpose and have built a structure for a particular purpose or a place like say, candlekeep right, like candlekeep in the Forgotten Realms, you could easily take that concept, move it to Your own and say like this is a magical library. The fact that it’s a magical library turns this entire location into a place of power, and you know clerics and priests of God them knowledge attend here and and getting entrance is a grueling and demanding task.

But once you’re here you have access to. You know the spirits of sages who still live here or or maybe you know you know the temple of the God of knowledge like they’ll. It will actually come down and talk to you and answer questions. It is a 7 a.M. Class that research papers do on Tuesday and day what you do with the place and how you present the structures. There’s going to tell a lot of the story that you want to tell and more importantly, like how it’s used.

You know if this is for a game you’re, creating an adventure location that your players can run around in it and potentially change things. So it’s worth thinking about like how is this place laid out? What’s the point of it all right, yeah just start with just an example: we’ve talked about before my character, air stadium, blinking, the diviner. We took that that castle in in the mirror mirror of dead man.

It was just an observatory with the telescope and it’s like my guy just had an existential crisis with killing people when he’s enough, when he’s a diviner so he’s like you know what this is place to sit down, put down some roots, right and and – and that Was perfect like it became his Wizards tower in our headquarters and it became all of those things like it: sort of organically grow. You like take over another location, which is another thing right, like you’re repurposing, a structure, that’s originally built for something and probably has been repurposed several times, yeah being able to like tell a story through how you present a location is a skill that you can learn As a dungeon master, because it’s a better way of doing it than just like info dumping – or you know like yeah, this place was great.

Here’s what you know about it through this spell or the sage versus letting them go there and discover and see how it you know all fits together like the second document in this place, made changes to it from its original function or something like that. It’s a way of showing, rather than telling and a way of like imparting a sense of wonder into location yeah. The big thing for me, with structures and and fantastical settings and worlds is this concept of sacred geometry, right of there being a type of architectural magic that you can engage in and if you think of of things like rune Smith’s and the like, then the idea Of objects being spells or spells being cast into objects.

It’s not that much of a stretch to then go like well. Why not buildings and if not buildings, then why not arrangements of buildings and, if, like a Magic Circle, if viewed from above, is an arrangement of certain glyphs and patterns, and you know in a certain way, then perhaps the buildings and walls and features of the landscape. That have been shaped could also make an arrangement that blogs similar magical energies.

And now you start thinking about the fact that say, the arrangement of rooms in the location might be a spell in and of itself yeah or the really weird Menino’s. Why or designed to disrupt spell magic right like the interior of the bar and the Dresden Files right, I forget his name now, but the way that the interior of this pub is laid back in alleys back in alleys right, he does first magic is first magic And perhaps there are you incorporate all of these things into your a place of power in that the entrance and places that need to be guarded are like magical baffles it just it’s just difficult to practice magic there because of the way everything’s laid out, but the Closer you get to the major sanctum magic becomes actually easier, more powerful and focused because this arrangement of walls with carefully embedded spells and runes and the materials that they’ve used to build it blog the magical energy to their.

You know casting chamber, which you know the air is electric with it, and all of those are, you know different ways to incorporate this idea of like the building as being a spell or being part of the magic of it, yeah just woven into it like Dresden’s. At the top of the hill in the island in the middle you can even reach, I think it calls it but yeah it was supposedly it’s it’s laid with spells and that’s what you’re going to want to do right.

I mean like you’re, going to be wanting to put your your. This is where you want to put your glyphs of warding. This is where you’re going to put all your your guards and wards. If you can get it. Yes, how you kind of lay out the the geography yeah but different Wizards are going to approach it different ways. Yes, we’ll get to that in a bit. Oh sure. Well, we’ve been talking about these casters yeah, but the spells are a part of the place, though right, because a lot of these spells are particularly we’re talking in a game like Dungeons and Dragons.

You know you cast them every day for a certain number time then become permanent until dispelled, and so, if you’ve got a place, that’s changed hands a few times that’s been or just like, been occupied by the same person for a long time. Then there might be old magic lying about spells that were laid a long time ago that have had time to wear and tear and fray or or even weirder things right like become self-aware dungeons of dragons.

It’s built on the idea of Van C and magic, which is that mad spells are living things that a caster traps in their mind. You know sort of like releases out into the world, then, if you follow that, then spells are wild things that you don’t just want to be leaving around unattended now all the time, so I you got to cast that thing every day, keep it in line. You might find that you know if your wizards tower arcane sanctum is, you know, abandoned that the magic has gone wild and frayed and coupled with the natural magic of the place, these spells that have been laid into the architecture and the the you know.

The entire structure of the place might behave differently, and might you know not work exactly the way say, Player’s Handbook spells work or something and like being something else entirely. Well, it could change the way that the people exploring it practice magic as well yeah, and – and maybe you could do a thing where you don’t have to cast at the entire amount of times to you know bring up to heal yeah.

But you know for a certain amount of time. Maybe you have to tend the spells. You know strictly like dodge the Dragons. The the counter spell mechanic is a good sort of benefit for this, like you just have a caster check right. You know it’s ten plus the spell level and just a quick caster check. Do you make it do not and and that’s a good way to sort of model that sort of difficulty. Otherwise, you know whatever system you’re using you can impose some kind of penalty or something, but I think it’s a good way to reinforce that these places are not normal and they’re, not just like a regular location, there’s something different about them, yeah and worthwhile.

Thinking about how magic and spells also fit into the structure of the place, don’t you yeah we talked about. You know how to build them, how how you’re going to build them? Sure, because also I mean hell, you can just build them with certain spells. Oh for one another thing worth mentioning yeah, you know that’s like the: what is it instant fortress or whatever you know, if you do that, there’s like you can literally just build your whole tower.

How you want it? Oh yeah you could like. Maybe the places get you summon the structure right like that. The whole point of being at this place is that you activate it and there’s like now the structure, the forms sort of around you is summoned into being yeah yeah. Well, you’re there, yes, yeah! Oh yeah, you got a little good disappearing structure. Oh yeah yeah, the Sun comes away, but you’re also going to want to populate that thing.

Right, yeah, I mean you know some wizards might be okay, with just being the only thing bubbling around there. Thirty storey tower sure, but generally there’s there’s usually there’s usually something moving around in the halls, doing things yeah their little homunculus and familiars. So you know in terms of like the inhabitants of the place. First of all, are they the original occupants? They are they supposed to be there.

Are they squatters or invaders, or something like that is in consideration, but, like, let’s assume they’re, you know they’re on purpose right brought there by the creator of it. Then it’s like. Are they guests? You know. Is this someone that the caster or mage has you know? I want you to be here and we’re going to talk about. You know something diplomatic or work on research together, maybe they’re a family member or something you can get really sort of weird.

With this and depending on how powerful the caster is, you might have like time lost guests or or creatures from other dimensions that are just like staying with the wizard as just as a friend or something like that, a lot of times, it’s fun, to incorporate like Extra planar creatures in this sense not as adversaries, not as part of a plot they have to you, know suss out, but just as color background uh, someone that they could interact with if they wanted to, but it’s not vital, and so they can approach the fantastical Elements sort of on their own, but it’s offered you know, yeah they’re, staying at the suppose, R star, because they’re like the getting diplomatic immunity or something from their dimension right yeah.

If they leave this tower they’re going to get taken back exactly right, it might be that these towers are the only places that extra planar creatures that otherwise butt heads with each other can come and speak civilly or maybe Wizards towers are known as as like neutral Ground, for you know the blood war or something like that where emissaries from this demon in this devil, you know just having a some tea right now or some angels name of chance, free dragon ante.

That’s one! Those those arguments were there willingly and and are represent potential friendly encounters with for the PCs but servants of the you know the master of the tower scene announcing both seen and unseen, both magical and non magical, and we start really kind of thinking about it. You could easily have an eclectic mix of conjured constructs that handle like the menial, labor and data tasks of the place and then, like highly-specialized, you know actual people who are there like.

Oh, yes, I I’m, you know, I take care of the wards. It’s my job to attend to the warding glyphs and the like, or it was beautiful right. You know like any of the phones going to really like mine this for some silly stuff. You can look at like the court of Louis, the 14th or some of the other Louie’s before they all got there had to cut off, and this and sort of see like this is the person who opens this particular door for the king or wipes his bum.

With this particular cloth and yeah, you can really get silly with the amount of servants that a caster might have, because maybe they’re, incredibly powerful old beyond anyone’s. You know, understanding and you know, collected these sorts of servants. Definitely an on-site tailor. Maybe there’s a huntsman, a groundskeeper master-at-arms, someone that attends to all the magical beasts that they’ve collected, who else is going to feed the Griffins or deal with the pet giant that we have out back that kind of thing yeah the master-at-arms would be like the smallest.

Whatever it was, yeah little creature they’re a little busier yeah. Definitely like a quicklink, oh yeah, you go quickly. Those are people who are, there will say mostly willingly mostly willing right. You might also have summoned creatures who are bound to the place either in. Like a summoning circle or proper cage, or maybe just like they can’t leave the grounds, perhaps the the arcane sanctum is literally a sanctuary of some kind, for you know conjured creatures who are unable to get back home, and you know you can’t just have them running Around so these mages, you know they just let them live here.

They’re, fine, but too much time away from their home has made them a little crazy. Let’s not talk to them and and you’re. You know you’re there more as caretakers, then you know like proper mages. All of those things you can feature in there and are again ways to impart information to the party. You know they stumble across. You know a hemisphere of Darkness brightly glowing runes around the outside of it.

They know that they found some kind of creature that doesn’t want to be disturbed being bound in a summoning circle, but who’s to say they can’t just have a chat, a friendly conversation with it yeah yeah. What could go wrong? Just take that moto dust over there and lay it over the rune, you know what’ll be the wiser. You know that kind of power, Jim yeah. It brings up a concept in in in role-playing games that I like, which is the the nega dungeon, the the type of dungeon that you go into and the normal things that you would do in a dungeon taking things killing monsters rummaging around yeah.

It’s going to get you not just it’s going to be bad for you personally, but also for the setting yeah. And so I like the idea of putting very powerful creatures bound in like summoning circles or magical prisons and the like, and just putting them in the path of the players and being like you could let them out. If you wanted they’re, certainly going to do everything they can to trick you into letting them out it’s a fun thing to put in there along with maybe more mundane prisoners.

You know, maybe that’s where the Kings nephew got up to yeah. Oh he’s off at boarding, school, honey, don’t write, and so any number of say, political prisoners, inconvenient family members. You know exiles from foreign lands. All of them could be found in the dungeons of prisons of places like this, because who else to take care of these people, but these mages yeah for price right sure not just inhabitants, but like the particularly contents of things, the objects that you might find there.

There’s probably meditation chamber summoning rooms, ritual magic chambers, you might have all kinds of odd guest quarters, depending on st eries beastie Ares and those four more aquatic persuasions. You know an aviary of some kind for different Flyers that you might know hosts there. Well, I’m seeing a sanctimonious now if you go to earth you know, and in the middle is all the mages that built the place, looks were like a node type structure that could be like you could have that because they’re studying the different elements and now and What began is like a research and observation location became a place where the creatures from these other planes, like made first contact as I’m kind and maintained.

You know like an ambassador sort of relationship there or something there’s a lot of different ways to play. It out. Great big summoning, like rooms where there’s gigantic, you know creatures that are in the midst of moving between worlds and it takes a while right. It’s going to take a week to bring this behemoth over from where it is, but we need it trust me. We don’t mess with it totally be worth.

It trust me, libraries of all sorts of outlandish and strange books, both forbidden and and otherwise that’s just that’s like the magical, fantastical stuff there’s you know more mundane pantries and kitchens and rooms and halls, and things like that. Fine, so it’s a place that can really come to life and, depending on whether it’s like an active, like you know, the original inhabitants are there they’re fulfilling the purposes of these structures, kind of thing or it’s, an old ruined place with the ghosts of the inhabitants And old spells that haunt the halls and no one’s been here in ages, and what are we doing here again like it really can really tell an interesting story with that and and really contribute to your world and then, like showcase, what makes it unique, there’s someone We left out yeah yeah, the man at the top.

The whole reason that this tower, the sanctum has been built who’s building this thing like, and what are they going to build? What are they going to build? It’s obviously going to be determined by who’s who’s building. It diviner is going to build a much different tower than a than an Evoque er or an abjad, certainly certainly so. The mage themselves are is a big factor in a lot of this and when you’re thinking about these things, you know, maybe the mage is the first thing that kind of pops up, but you know the personality of the caster, how they wield magic.

Are they a very demanding, iron-willed kind of figure, or they you know a motive and and freewheeling in their magic and and their discipline right, like all of that, is going to factor into what kind of place this is? Is it the abode of a long-lived, caster or one more shorter lived? Maybe someone who practiced a particular kind of magic that was unique to them. That’s colored the place or a one, that’s maybe more common and widespread, and therefore this location is quite coveted.

Are they still there or are they gone, and for what reason would they be gone? All of those things can help. You both determine what you want to do with this location once you’ve actually created it, because, presumably you know you’re not just thinking all this stuff up for the hell of it. It’s going to be either interacted with with players you’re going to present it. It’s part of your world, and so thinking through all of this as a way to like really add depth to these places and get them interested in exploring them, because poking your head around in this, this location is what makes the whole thing fun right.

Oh, it totally is, and I mean, and not only that, but everything we’re talking about here. Eventually, one of those players who’s a caster – is going to want to build a little bit of a sanctum of their own one day and settle down. Oh sure, it’s a unique one over themselves, but but you know all this information is is: is there for them as well? So you can. You can build the best sanctum that you can have the best thing to it.

It’s worth sort of thinking about, like as you’re presenting these things as game elements, that there is a there’s, a breakpoint somewhere for your group, where the outlandish bizarre kind of things or the the depth and layers of traps and wards and guards and Guardians that you’ve Put on can be like go from fun to frustrating rarely very quickly and and and you know, as you’re, creating these things, you’re sort of like a dungeon master or a world builder and you’re like oh man.

Of course it would have this and that and oh my god, it wouldn’t be impossible to break into, and oh this is the perfect setting like thinking about it in terms of its playability of whether or not the play set and what we’ve created is it’s conducive To play something that you really should think about, because often times you create things in a war old, and it isn’t until you present them to the players that you realize, like oh wait, a minute that seemed that was like fun.

When I was thinking about it and like oh yeah, this wizard is awesome like you’re, never going to get the drop on them and then like three hours into a session, the party feels stumping you’re like oh I’m sorry about that. I’m pretty sure today, with my story, bound crew with the glyph checkerboard on the glyph chair, where they got through that. But when you got to the the stillborn neo key that exists both in the ethereal and the prime material all right around on the web of thoughts that are in the room and basically project your worst like the most hated enemy.

So you attack it, but the whole thing is it’s a psychic thing, so the second you attack it. You take the same amount of damage until you figure out like oh no, I need to be jumping through the fog to whatever is back 20-feet back, not the thing. That’s right in front of me: yeah yeah ooh, so you get like at a moment where players are just you’ll, get a player, a revolt eventually well, they finally figured out and we’re toss bottle.

Finally, like he’s like wait a minute, I think it’s over there misty stepped and saw it something a tiny miyagi thing, and you know so that once I figured it out, but it was just like yeah, it’s a fine line. Right, like you, have to really know your group, and sometimes it might take a long time of playing together to figure out where that line is and and even then, even if you’ve been playing with people for years where that line is in a given night is Changes right, I think it’s just worth considering, because it I know for myself, I you know in designing these things for all the different games that have played over the years.

There have been plenty of times, nothing like all right after the sixth wall of force comes down and traps the party in to eat, and you know you’re just like wait a second. No, you can let your imagination run wild to the point where it’s no longer a thing to be played with and interacted with, yeah, and I think, keeping those things in mind like it’s fun, to think of all the fantastical things you can do, but we’re always Remembering that, when you’re talking about a game, these are meant to be interacted with meant to be played with and and explored poked around and looked at, maybe not without consequence.

Then that’s a good way to make sure that you’re going to stay on that side of interesting and fun and if you start toeing the line up into frustration, there’s ways that you can scale that back yeah and you know – or you know, every time, your players Just like aha moment comes through and it goes from frustrating to fun right. You know it’s a part of the nature of the game, but yeah, but but the big thing is to never forget that these are opportunities to enrich your world with, with with the magical with the fantastical – and you know – hopefully they go poking around in your in Your sanctum, yes, have a great time head on over to patreon for our weekly podcast and so much more web DM is also on Twitch with three weekly games, which we upload to web DM plays our second youtube champion, I’m familiar with the concept of like AI Gods and people interpreting technical processes as spells and rituals, not particularly gene Wolfe’s series, although I know that the the new Sun series is, you know like heavily inspired new manera and some other kind of science fantasy stuff.

I think my favorite interation of it is probably in you know, weird module the anomalous subsurface environment, where it’s like these orbital gods and AI platforms, communicate with priests down on the ground through like monitors and things like that and that’s how they sort of interpret their Their signs I had a setting that I never used. I developed it for awhile parts of it made it into lamb, 22 rivers, but I never ran a game in it where it was like part of an intergalactic civilization right and it’s like a pleasure planet or something like that, and it goes dark.

The whatever intergalactic networks of communication travel it was, it was a part of disintegrate, and it’s just by itself. Oh there’s like shades of tech ml if you’re familiar with that one, but this one was distinctly like there’s they’re these AI, that orbit the planet in satellites and now they’re cut off from their other AI, and they slowly descend into madness and insanity. Just because they don’t get the regular updates – and you know those kinds of things zero here – one there uh-huh and and like you know the the people who were able to communicate with – and you know, interact with those satellites.

You know they’ve controlled, like the weather on the planet. They controlled all these kinds of things. Oh yeah, when Raisa went dark, it was never pretty, it was never pretty, and so they had they had them like sort of embedded in them and as sort of like machines that were in them. So it would appear as spell-casting, but it would, but you know, wouldn’t be it’s just accessing the program codes of these a eyes that control various things through super science, some things so yeah.

I like that that you know that setup. It’s very very fun, pretty sure there was a original series episode about that. Not only a Futurama episode. Definitely a Futurama episode. Yeah do like 40 KS. That way, right, like what’s a machine spirit other than an AI right, like that’s how I see the Machine spirit they are. I know that in 40 ka I are like you know heresy, but I just feel like they’re, probably too stupid to realize that they’re surrounded by AI.

It’s really only these few that they, you know whatever all Aerotech so

Make Fans & Customers w/ Marketing Funnels + Avoid Being A 1 Hit Wonder [Marketing Funnels Part 1]

How to create fans, customers and even a community to spark a movement, so let’s get into marketing funnels and then I’ll be back, alright, alright! So this is what a marketing funnel looks like it’s split up into these five categories: awareness, consideration, conversion, loyalty and advocacy.

Now, I’ve put it into my own words, not, for instance, awareness is basically the discovery phase. This is, however, you find out about something. However, you discover it that could be through social media email search engine optimization, which means when you’re on Google, when something pops up in the browser. As far as the search terms make it be an ad that pops up when you’re reading TV or when you’re on one of the websites, you can be reading an interview on The Breakfast Club and a person.

It’s in the interview – and now you figure out like I don’t know who this person is some kind of collaboration word-of-mouth or you can somehow discover this person’s content, there’s so many ways. But, however, you discover that person is point blank and simple. The consideration phase, which I call to learn more actually is when people decided a little bit more intentionally to learn more now, there could be passive learning more, which means there’s always just more and more information popping up about you to this person.

Maybe they have a bunch of friends who are fans about you, so they tend to hear more, but the learn more tends to be a little bit more active with their now saying. I’m aware of that person I discovered them now. Let me figure out a little bit more about this person now, if you’re, an artist, that’s pretty much going to look like them listening to your music or they could be consuming your social brand.

If you have a lot of funny social content or whatever type of social content you have out there, they might just be consuming that, but tip is going to be the music, or at least you want it to be the music. If you have some kind of brand like a software in this learning more phase, that could be you providing some kind of free content or information like an e-book or something like that, and then they download the e-book same thing could be done for an artist, though You can provide something and get something in return like an email address or phone number as well, and then, even if you have like a t-shirt brand or something like that, that can also just be people finding more about what other styles do you have now that People have learned about your brand.

That’s learning more, it’s kind of straightforward is really just the idea of people figuring out more they’re, going down the rabbit hole of your brand now conversion. This is one that engagement is getting a lot deeper, and this is, when things become a lot more intentional from you as a brand, because you are trying to create fans out of this marketing funnel now. What does that look like when we’re talking about deepening engagement? You have multiple ways, but one way is extremely systematic.

When we talk about sending out emails, if you in the consideration phase, exchanged some form of product or some form of information for somebody’s email, you can create a system and then engage with those people systematically or you can have ads that are targeting these people, who Are learning more about you? They tend to call that retargeting the people who have engaged with your brand a little bit now you’re starting to hit them with ads.

That’s why you see those pop-ups whenever you go to certain websites and then later on, those people start showing ads on other sites. But the freer option really comes from just staying consistent and providing consistent engagement on social media right. So people might find out and learn more about you on social media. That’s how it happens for most people, but then, when you’re deepening their engagement, you just have to provide content after content after content and really needs to be in a variety as opposed just the same type of content, because in this phase they’re really to learn more About your brand in particular and there’s deciding whether they actually like your brand in this phase, so you’re deepening the relationship and by staying constant on what you post on social media.

It allows you to stay top of mind with them and provide more and more for them to consume quick side numbers, because this is the perfect depiction of why so many one-hit wonders become one-hit wonders think about the fact that if someone discovers you and then they Even start to learn a little bit more, you have a little bit, they can see about you, but then it goes into that conversion phase and you don’t have a bunch of content for them to really grab hold of and become a true fan of you.

You don’t have an established fan base for them to really show what the lifestyle and culture is around you as an artist around your brand. That’s something that’s really necessary to drive somebody to the next phase of a fan, which is where that loyalty is created and, if you think about it from the standpoint of a software by the way now they’re established culture and brand value and social proof is usually Going to be like reviews, product reviews, online people are looking for credibility in this stage outside of just themselves, with a t-shirt company they’ll be looking for other people wearing a brand or what quality? What’s the true value of the brand? Is it in Walmart or is it in some high? I don’t know higher class boutique in LA or somewhere.

These are all the things people start to look at because they want to get a sense of the lifestyle the brand they want to know how to associate. You as an artist or this brand as a person because they want to know if they fit and if you share the same values for the lifestyle that they find value in and if you complete this part correctly with the right people. Congratulations, you got a fan, but now you have to stay consistent for that maintenance.

You have to continue to communicate the values that they decide they related to, and just do that again and again and again, and those people who really like you and Iraq with you. They will then advocate for you, which is what you see at the bottom number five and when they’re advocating that spreading the word about your word of mouth. So then, the vein that you created goes out tell somebody else about it, and then they start them back at the marketing funnel at the top of the marketing funnel, because that person now is aware of you, they can consider you, you have the opportunity to convert Them into a love thing and then they can go out and convert another person for you.

This is why, when someone has a strong core fan base, those fan bases really tend to grow because they’re creating these people who then go out and are ambassadors for their brand and we’ll get deeper into each stage in another article all right now, that’s it for Marketing funnels, but I’m also going to do a article on sales funnels, because people tend to get the two mixed up and, of course, I’ll show you how you can connect it to for yourself, particularly through music other than that.

Designing Inspired Style Guides – Talk.CSS #24 max-content Edition

Okay, brilliant thanks for making me feel old. Come all of this way, and now I feel, like some kind of I don’t know, decrepid relic good afternoon good afternoon, thanks very much for coming. It’s absolutely fantastic to be here. Thanks to Chris and everybody for the invitation, I’ve been to Singapore dozens of times, but this is the only time I’ve ever left the airport.

It’s some Singapore’s a lot bigger than I’d experienced before so where last year I actually moved from the UK down to Sydney. I took over it as head of designer company called and Sarada and we’re actually making some really exciting designs that are a kind of combination of kind of editorial and product work, we’re actually building our design and development team. So if you are interested in Sydney then and send me an email or send me a tweet, and I also consulted my own company – do designs for clients, stuff nonsenses.

Our new design this week meet Errol. My new guerrilla and our goal for the past 20 years has always been to make distinctive creative work for the web work that kind of goes beyond just making a digital product or a website easy to use, because to me, design is much more than just problem-solving. You know it’s about communication, it’s about inspiring brand loyalty and encouraging affinity, and that’s why you’ll meet Errol on the website.

You don’t see pictures of me and a good deal of my work over the years has involved designing systems and pattern. Libraries and style guides worked for clients like Greenpeace and and WWF and style guides. These tools have become incredibly fashionable. You know: we’ve got articles talks, even entire conferences, like clarity in San Francisco that have been devoted to them and perhaps the most well-known design methodology today is Brad Frost’s atomic design.

I bet there’s very few people that have not heard of atomic web design. A Brad wrote a book about atomic web design. He was kind enough to mention me in the knowledge Minh said so Andy Clark, who’s been talking about design systems and atoms before it was the hip thing to do. Thank you for all your writing and thinking, but you still not getting my dog, which, which is a real shame. Actually, because my my Instagram feed is full of pictures of Brad’s, dog, Ziggy and other people’s babies.

I’m not sure that’s normal and that’s because in 2012. Oh, my god, that’s such a long time ago, before atomic design, I introduced this idea of designing atoms and elements, and it’s this process that separates what I call the atmosphere of a design from the layout and if you fast forward to today, we’ll find that style Guide has become this umbrella term for several different types of design, documentation.

They might be static, PDF style or visual identity guidelines. They illustrate how a brand should be presented and how those assets should get used across different media. This is a an example from Audi which includes how to use their fonts and colors and their logo come back to LD a little bit later. Cuz, I’m hoping that if I mention them twice, they’ll send me a free one. You just passed my water, please J’s.

So voice and tone guidelines they describe how a a brand’s personality should get conveyed through the way that it speaks to customers. A MailChimp’s voice and tone is a fabulous really well-known example of how to imbue a brand’s personality through the language that they use front. End code guidelines for developers, they stipulate coding standards to encourage better collaboration across teams.

Sure we’ve all seen examples like this. This is IBM’s carbon design system and then finally, component or patent libraries, which commonly contain examples of how to style the atoms and molecules and organisms and templates that Brad for us talked about in atomic web design. This is from the Guardians pasted up and it’s a typical example of a pattern: library, that’s been developed for developers by developers and in my work and I suspect in most of yours.

When we talk about a style guide, we mean a combination of visual identity guides. In a component or pattern library – and these all offer something slightly different, but more often than not, they all have something in common. Can you guess what that is? They all look ugly enough to have been designed by someone who really enjoys configuring, a Reuter or router, depending on which part of the world you’re in okay, that that was a bit mean because an unattractive style guide is not going to be a problem for everyone.

I mean people say as long as it contains the information that people need how it matters shouldn’t, look or should it. You know this means that is the thing right. Beauty complements functionality doesn’t detract from it. Creative design enhances someone’s engagement with the style guide and it should amplify the content, and that means to be effective. A style guide should present that content in appealing and engaging ways and recently interest in design systems has meant that we’ve had reproductions of corporate design manuals.

These are become really popular, this one’s from British Rail, I ordered mine online and it came late. The NASA graphic standards manual describes the design of everything from a business card to the branding on a booster rocket. You got the New York City, Transit Authority, graphic standards manual. It includes the most comprehensive guide to how to use Helvetica that I’ve ever seen not making this up.

Finally, this is a mouthful. The official symbol of the American Revolution – Bicentennial graphic standards manual, explains that only how this symbol should be used, but also how it was created. This is important. I’m going to come back to this later and now there are collections of design guidelines online, including this one, which includes work from Apple and IBM and Microsoft. The problem with uninspiring style guides is that not everyone needs to take the same information from them.

You know if you’re looking for markup and styles to code up some form of media at component, you’re – probably going to be a techie type. But if you need to understand the balance of type sizes across a typographic hierarchy, you’re more likely to be creative. So what you need from a style guide is different, and yet so many style guides follow the same patterns. The slides are broken by the way. That’s intentionally blank, it’s okay, intentionally blank because I like to with the AV guys so I’m actually going to start off by looking at color, which to me, is one of the most important ingredients in a design because it it communicates enough enough.

It communicates personality and creates mood, and it’s vital to an interactive, understandable vocabulary. Okay, so now it actually has stopped right. No, no! No! We working! So you think right. If we talk about color you’d think that style guides would present color in any number of really imaginative ways right, but you’d be really disappointed because, generally the most aspiring your fine looks like a collection of paint chips from a DIY paint shop.

This is Lonely Planet’s Rizzo. It does a great job of separating design elements from UI components, but you’re going to struggle to get a feeling for Lonely Planet’s design. Just by looking at those color chips. This is green pieces world wide star guide that uses the same approach as the sky’s old web toolkit and the times is functional palette. Goth, UK gothic a we heard of this website. It’s not well known for its creative flair.

It varies the approach by using circles, which I find really strange, because circles don’t feature anywhere else in the branding or the design. On the plus side, though, the designers have provided some context by categorizing colors, like links and text and backgrounds. That kind of thing Google’s material design, offers an embarrassment of colors most helpfully, though it does advise people how to combine these primary and accent colors to into usable palettes, but few style guides actually offer explanations and even less in the way of inspiring examples.

Most are extremely vague when describe color. I love this use color as a presentation element for either decorative purposes or to convey information. The government of Canada’s web experience toolkit states rather obviously, apparently I didn’t know this. We can say this inside Microsoft. I can’t say this inside Adobe, but adding more colors to their palette, as apparently made Adobe a rich, dynamic and multi-dimensional company who knew it.

Was that easy? I’m not sure at all. What makes the draft us web standards guideline colors a distinctly American palate, but it’s going to have to work bloody hard to achieve its goal of communicating warmth and trustworthiness. After a year of Donald Trump, we’re going to build a great style guide, people won’t believe it. It’s going to be so great Mexico is going to pay for it right, the University of Oxford’s, it much more helpful.

They explain how and why to use their colors. They say in a British accent. The dark oxford blue is used primarily in general page furniture such as the backgrounds on the header and footer beautiful. The designers are open table they’ve considered how to explain the hierarchy of the colors that they use by presenting them and their supporting colors in different size chips. So it’s really obvious which are the primary and supporting and accent or neutral colors.

They don’t have to say so Foursquare. They helpfully prescribe the percentages of colors that make up their marketing materials, but there are much more imaginative ways that we can describe color. I love this steel toolmakers brand book, which itself is a really good example of thoughtful graphic design. It could not be clearer when it says use this color with fantastic. You know it presents its information clearly and it’s in a way which is consistent with this no-nonsense.

Steel brand, the designers at Alberta’s corporate identity manual. They cleverly combine colors with imagery of the region that inspires them, and these larger blocks of color give people a stronger feeling for the design without making it difficult to find information about those colors. You know finally, a style guide should demonstrate the interplay of color and typography just to make sure that people understand what’s acceptable in terms of color contrast and accessibility.

So for some companies organizations brand books have developed into a bit of an art form. If you find these things as inspiring as I do, that’s important to remember that we shouldn’t just simply copy the appearance, what we should do is to turn this inspiration into designs that work for the web. You know, for example, this page from the GARP from the Barbican brand book to me suggests things like SVG shapes and CSS blend modes, all that cool stuff.

This is the distinctive McMiller cancer support, visual identity and they’ve brought the design to every page of their brand guidelines. You know the color chips match the style and we get much better understanding of their visual identity when those same colors are used in other kind of imaginative imaginative ways. You know, of course, living style guides and pattern. Libraries. They need to present information about color values, but this is such a fabulous opportunity to be creative.

You know, perhaps we could design some kind of interactive UI that helps people in different audiences get the information they need. This is the Royal Mail, which is one of Britain’s most recognizable brands. I managed to leave brexit island just after Christmas, she’s glad to put on a French accent to get across the border. In fact, when I put on a French accent, they basically asked me to leave, which was fine.

He didn’t mention brexit in the introduction. This was yeah honestly, don’t get me started. I think I got myself started. This is a page from the Royal mallows Brown book. It’s really effective because it brings colour and iconography and typography together into this single page. That gives us an immediate, immediate impression of the brand. You know. What’s more iconic than a van color chips can be used in other kind of imaginative ways to present colour information.

You know they don’t have to be rectangular. If you feel playful shapes with colours, you can better connect them with a brand. This is the designer designers of the the frozen-yogurt. You say, yogurt or yogurt. Here, you’re good yogurt. It is yogurt yogurt, Jurgen fruisé. They did exactly that. What they did was that they don’t just explain their colors. They tastefully display them inside these silhouetted tubs of rose and yogurt, and this conveys personality as well as color information.

You know, style guides can make a bigger impression when they have personality. This is a page from from bings design guidelines and again it brings color and typography graphic styles and their logo together to describe how bings visual identity system is constructed. So I think that style guide should inspire people as well as to inform those who use them, and I was keeping that in mind when I did designed a series of what I call inspired guide.

Design templates – and these are style guide templates that I hope are as beautiful as they are functional, and I made six sets of these things and they all contain pages of design, principles and colors and logos and typography and form elements and buttons all of the stuff That you would normally put into a pattern library or a style, guide and CSS custom properties. I was going to drop some CSS in here at some point.

These now have really really excellent browser support and they’re fabulous for using inside star guides, because they make it so quick to make color changes across different pages that make it so quick and simple. And if you don’t want to use nodejs or npm or any other complicated solutions to get in the way of a of making a style guide, you can just make these things with a good dose of semantic HTML and some plain old CSS SVG, possibly a little Bit of native JavaScript, whatever that is, you know, you should not need a framework, people always say well, you know, can I use this thing with bootstrap? You shouldn’t need a framework or any particular software or toolset to make a living style guide.

You know what we should be doing is removing as many dependencies as we can and if we want to improve the way than which we present Carlow inside style guides. There’s plenty that we can do you know. For a start, we needn’t confine color information just to the color palette, page in the style guide. You know finding imaginative ways to display color across different pages and then show it in context with all the other parts of the design that could be really effective.

This is a six different cover pages that I packed with color. You know they make a really bold statement. You know a visual hierarchy can be easier to understand than just labeling colors as primary or supporting. So we should find creative ways to display that hierarchy. You know you might use pallet panels of different sizes or you might arrange boxes on a modular grid and then fill that whole page with color.

You know don’t limit yourself to rectangular shapes, we can use circles or we can use other shapes that just made with CSS and if irregular shapes are part of our brand, then we can fill SVG silhouettes with CSS and then we can wrap text around them using Css shapes all really fun stuff. You know, for the style guides that I’ve designed I try to go beyond just documenting color and type styles, and I’ve want to describe what they mean visually for the brand.

This was a project that I did last year for Sun Life Insurance in the UK and I described their colors and how to use them across a series of art-directed pages which reflect the kind of lively personality of the Sun Life brand and there’s information about hex And RGB values and SAS variables and when to use these colors for branding or interaction or messaging, you know it’s all there, but it’s in a format that I hope will appeal as much to creative as well as technical people.

You know, and I included information about color contrast, accessibility, because you know understanding why certain combinations of color are inaccessible that can really reduce testing times. You know it can avoid a lot of arguments about color choices, and then I try to find distinctive ways to present color that better reflects the brand. So for sonlife I made these header graphics that really show that their brand personality has a fun side to it.

You know I experimented with ways to communicate color hierarchy through different sizes and quantities of their circle device, so alongside color typography is probably going to be the most defining aspect of any design. So we’re really fortunate now to be able to use any number of different fonts on the web, we’re not limited to using fonts that are just installed on a person’s device. So you might imagine that with so many beautiful typefaces available style guide, designers would constantly be creating inspiring ways to present these types of typefaces.

You know you’d be disappointed. This is Adobe again even Adobe. They own Typekit numerous typefaces, but they fail to make the most from the fabulous fonts in their own star guide. You know most pattern. Libraries offer documentation, but they don’t offer inspiration. You know, while information about type sizes is important, so is the context in which that type is used. The treatment of type different screen widths and the way that type elements interact with each other is vital, so communicating a design.

You know many style guides fail in demonstrating this even the best examples, including this gel from Westpac. It only shows a typefaces basic set of characters. It doesn’t show the context, doesn’t show any other elements. It doesn’t show whitespace. You know as it’s a publication which is written with mostly written content. I think it’d be more inspiring and informative to see examples of actual headings.

This is from this is from The Times of London. Instead of this kind of greeting text, you know people use this quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog because it contains every letter in the English alphabet, but we can use our imaginations to better demonstrate the characteristics of a typeface. You know over the past few years I’ve been rediscovering the work of accomplished art directors and graphic designers.

You know I, I studied fine art, I didn’t study graphic design, so you know 30, 40 years on this stuff’s all still new. To me. You know learning about this. Work has convinced me that there’s so much more that we can do to communicate our use of type within a style guide. You know looking at inspiration from other medium, including print. We can learn ways to combine color and typography together to better communicate the spirit of a brand and then how to use those assets.

So we’ll go back to the the New York City, Transit Authority, graphic standards manual. You know it immerses the reader in the details of Helvetica more than any publication that I’ve ever seen and it’s showcasing not just the letters but those all-important, often fascinating numerals, and these so often get forgotten when we’re making a star guide. You know when we view characters up close. We can get a much better feel for what gives them their personality in when we illustrate type.

We should also explain how those characteristics of size and thickness and weight should then inform the design of other elements. On a page, including things like symbols, or icons, and understanding how to design typography so that it’s legible and readable, when we present it light on dark, this is something that’s often missing from most of the style guides that I’ve read, as is how typefaces working combination With other icons and their symbols, so this is a page from the New York City, graphic standards, Authority, graphic standards manual, and it just does this fabulous job of demonstrating how helvetica’s, numerals and letters combine to create this design that just feels at home on the new York, metro and style guide should inspire designers by demonstrating other potential applications for typography.

This is the nasa graphic standard manual. It does just that. You know it starts with their iconic logo and I really really enjoy how the designers have explained the background to the typefaces they’ve chosen. You know, I know from experience that including explanations like this can really help people to realize the importance of good type. You know these things are not just commodities that come installed with Windows.

Nasa demonstrates how to use typography on signage vehicle livery. You know, and it’s important to demonstrate how typography can affect even these most kind of mundane items. These are paper forms from NASA, but they could just easily be a an email newsletter or a web form. You know these all benefit from better typographic design and in a style guide. Typography pages can include the examples of the cases and the weights primary and supporting typefaces information about white space.

It should demonstrate how different type treatments should vary. When they’re presented light on dark and as a design often includes supporting and primary typefaces, we should devise ways to show the relationships between typefaces. You know many contain really distinctive character for letters or numerals or symbols. So we ought to make space in the star guide to showcase them. You know, rather than overlook those numbers we should design pages to show when and how and why someone should choose to use numerals for maybe a supporting typeface rather than the primary one.

You know there can be fun. You know we should find ways to display them as that are as attractive as they are useful and to give people a better understanding of how to use them as well as breaking typed down into component parts. You know it’s really important to show the combinations of different type elements, for example in our large images with captions, and we should provide this extra context by demonstrating a type element alongside, let’s say, a typographic scale and then provide information about using color.

At the same time, you know we can use this process of designing a style guide to kind of expand. Our repertoire of designs for little elements that often get forgotten like block, quotes and pull quotes, and we can take the opportunity to bring designers and developers together around a style guide, to talk about the creative possibilities without sacrificing, let’s say, performance or responsiveness.

So when I was designing for WWF, I had to think very very carefully about how to use the typefaces that they’d already chosen. So I started off by making some simple kind of HTML type sheets, and then I tested them across different devices so that I could understand what the minimum and the maximum sizes should be, and then the style guide that I designed for WWF. It includes these organisms. It even includes full page templates so that it gives the fullest kind of impression of my typographic design, and I took a similar approach when I was designing for some life.

This is demonstrating how their bag rounded typeface, how that sort of personality gets conveyed through interactive. You eyes who have included the modular scale, included information about color, and this son lifestyle guide even includes the big larger organisms in a banners and common navigation elements just to ensure that everything is presented as part of a consistent whole. You know to be effective, a style guides, typography shouldn’t just be reduced to its component parts.

We should see typography as an ensemble of type elements that all play their part in a typographic design. Finally, I want to talk about imagery, because graphic icons and graphic images are another important element in the design of a lot of digital products and websites. So let’s have a look at how many style guides routinely display this iconography the Code for America style guide. It presents these icons at different sizes, but the designers at clear left, who we saw earlier they haven’t, explained how the design of these icons should adapt when a get reproduced at different sizes.

You know they’ve also really missed a trick. I think an opportunity to demonstrate adaptability and responsiveness. They could have. You know, built this style guide, for example using picture elements so that we could see what those icons would look like on different device widths. I just I really wish the designers of the map box style guide, had thought just a little bit harder about designing some kind of imaginative interface to make the most of these icons.

I don’t know: where do you have your binoculars, beautiful icons, reproduced, tiny, tiny size and, sadly Atlassian star guide, says absolutely nothing about how to create new icons that match their existing set. This is an important omission. You know. Meanwhile, over at Gavi UK I’ve actually found those circles which we were missing earlier. You know it’s really easy to poke fun. I know that it’s really easy to poke fun, especially at golf dot UK, but it’s really hard to get the design of a star guide right, because designers and developers need something different from them.

You know, developers might need file names and CSS class attribute values. Designers might need to learn how to create new icons with the same visual style as the existing ones. You know, satisfying both needs can be really tricky, but the challenge isn’t any more difficult than the work that we all do every day. You know, I’m convinced that we can do a lot better. You know you might feel more than a hint of nostalgia when you look through British rails corporate identity manual.

Mine arrived late, and now I can only read it. Standing up. British Rail jokes. Don’t go down! Well, in Singapore, I have the rolling in the aisles. If we were in Scunthorpe, you know it’s visual identity, this iconic visual identity extends to the trains. It extends that their uniforms of the people that used to run them very attractive, dapper. Looking chap they’re, you know the best style guides.

Explain the. Why, as well as the how – and this is especially true when it comes to designing things like logo marks or symbols, and I’m fascinated as someone that didn’t study graphic designers to how these symbols are created. You know understanding the thinking that goes into designing a symbol can help people appreciate how and then, when to use very of it. You know this matter is now more than ever before.

I think, because this symbol can be reproduced at any number of different screen sizes across this whole array of devices, and it’s especially important when we think about reproducing symbols against dark color backgrounds, so color, icons and type. They should all complement each other within a design, and style guide should really demonstrate how to combine these elements to achieve the most effective result.

You know, I really love the precision. That’s gone into designing this signage. Is it only me who thinks that this is like the best website button you’ve ever seen in knowing how an icons been designed goes hand in hand with understanding how to use it and fully appreciating principles and proportions makes working an icon into a design at the Right size and with the right amount of white space around it much much easier.

Of course, not every icon or symbol needs precision. I’m always amused. When I read that to maker the Skype cloud, we can use circles any size and placement and shape, but make sure it looks cloud — is –. You know for this style guide that I designed for Sun Life. I went beyond simply documenting the icons and tried to use those icons themselves to add personality to the style guide and with almost all of their style guide pages.

This icon page was, you, know, thoughtfully art directed. I wanted to include the anatomy of an icon and how to design one with the correct proportions. You know. Actually, I adjusted the proportions of the circles in the Sun Life logo so that each one was like 75 % larger than the one before in the sunrise and then built the grid around that. So it explains how I use those proportions to create a grid that then became the foundation for all these future icon designs.

And then I described how to use those same principles to create graphic illustration, so that every graphic illustration, every graphic element, has a relationship back to the proportions in the Sun Life logo and explaining these processes clearly to future designers is really going to help to maintain Standards and hopefully consistency, especially as the collection of these icons and illustrations grows, and I think, because it’s always better to show something.

Rather than tell, I use those same kind of graphic illustrations right the way across the star guide to bring that to life. So in all of the work that I do, I try to use creative design to improve not only how something looks, but also how effective it is and style guides should be much more than just guides to a library of patterns. You know they can inspire people to make better designs, they can teach people the importance of good design and why it’s important to keep our standards high.

You know style guides also the perfect place where we can experiment if you’ve been aching to try out a new design or layout technique like CSS grid. You can do that away from the normal Reince of browser support. You know I want to stretch expectations about what a style guide that’s been developed with HTML and with CSS can look like you know. I want to win, I hope, to inspire people to learn more about those technologies through the style code.

You know it’s also. The perfect perfect place to document the history of a design. These these stories often get lost really easily in the fast-paced environment of today’s design and development. Yes, so, instead of showing finished work in the case, study finished working as a case study in your portfolio. Write about those thought processes show your designs evolution. This is really important to documenting the history of the web.

You know the best the best systems are based on a solid set of principles, so it’s really really important. That style guide explains these well. I promise that I would mention OD again they’ve done what many people haven’t yet achieved and that’s make this tool. That’s as practical for designers as it is for developers. You know, they’ve really succeeded in letting the sole of their brand shine through in the style guide.

I’d like to think we can all learn a lot from that example. Design principles are something that Shopify’s Polaris describes incredibly well, you know hats off to these guys. I think this Polaris is the best style guide. I’ve seen for the last couple of years. It does a lot of things right. You know it starts with accessibility and Polaris makes a really good case for making usability for everyone and building inclusive experiences, part of its principles.

You know it’s showing really what to do and what not to do not just documenting a set of guidelines but showing graphic examples, and I suppose, because a design system is never finished, Polaris also makes it really easy for people to collaborate on its development. You know and why not bring those design principles off the screen and into a three-dimensional world. These posters were designed by an intern, Salesforce and now they’re everywhere around the Salesforce organization, to remind their people of their design principles every day, yeah, you might choose to break the model altogether.

You might combine all of these elements of your visual identity and patterns into a single sheet poster for your designers or developers, or maybe even third-party agencies that you work with to hang up on their wall. You know the possibilities are really endless, so I hope that I’ve inspired you to think a little bit more creatively about the design of your own style guides and component and pattern libraries, and also why creative design can inspire and inform people better.

So thank you very. Very much for listening.

SEO: where search engine results come from

So here’s a search result and a series of search results. Anyways, and you can see the top three right here. The first thing to notice is this big link that everyone clicks on the content inside here is the title tag of your HTML file. So if I have an empty HTML file right here, whatever you type in between the title tags here shows up right here.

So that’s a very important section for keywords: it’s the section that most people read not too many people actually read the description underneath. But the title here is extremely important because that’s what people see as well as Google uses the keywords from the title when displaying search results. Another thing that’s important to our website is this description. Underneath here this description can come from one of two places: either the Meta Description tag in our HTML, so we could have a tag like this at a name equals description and content equals whatever and put a small description in here.

So this will either come from that tag or it will come from the first paragraph on your page, so it will come from here now, there’s no way for us to tell Google which to choose either the first paragraph or the Meta Description. Google just figures out whichever one is more appropriate, whichever one is more targeted to humans and that’s what we’ll be choose chosen. So the description here and the title here, we have control over another place.

That Google looks for keywords, as you can see. Right here is the URL you’ll notice that the keyword, dinosaur or dime soars down here has been highlighted in the URL, showing you that the URL that you choose for your website actually impacts your search results. There’s a few other things right here. These links underneath the search results. We don’t really have any control over those Google figures out.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bpE-bIX1z9M

What links are important and shows them at the bottom, underneath the search results right here for this movie or this is the TV series. Actually, you can see there’s a rating, so it’s giving us a star rating and a numerical version and how many votes this information here is taken from the enhanced metadata supplied by the website and then we’ll look at that in future articles. So what we’re seeing here in the search results page is a few things.

The blue is the title. The green is the URL that we’ve chosen and you can see it’s matching keywords in that, and then this here is either the first paragraph on the site or the meta description. So that’s where Google gets the content to display in its search results page and the same thing applies to other search engines like DuckDuckGo and Bing. So the same sort of techniques are applied for those also

How to Become a Millionaire Without Working Hard

I told him that it’s not only that I don’t Play football, but that I didn’t play any game as a child, because I had a very terrible Childhood But even when I grew up and developed an interest, In movies and a few games like snooker, it only lasted a few years before I stopped almost Everything you can call game or leisure.

So if I don’t play games, what do I do with My life Do I just work, work and work. Hmm. No, while I don’t play games as most People know it, I don’t work hard too. I feel like I work less than most people. I Know, while I have more money than most people I’ll use this article to share with you how You can become a millionaire without working hard If you’re new here consider subscribing so That you won’t miss other interesting articles like this.

To start with, let’s find an answer to these Questions, Why do people think that they are working Hard – and Why do you think that you’re working hard These questions are very important to our Discussion because if we don’t know the reason why we think we’re working hard, we can’t Know how not to work hard and still make a lot of money? Do people think they are working hard because They are lazy and don’t want to work.

No Most people are not lazy. The reason why most people think that they Are working too hard is that they are not doing what they are passionate about. I hope you’ll agree with me on this. Just imagine that you’re playing your favorite Game, Do you feel like you’re working so hard playing Games, Probably not One of the biggest problems in our world today. Is that there’s no enough emphasis in our schools about students’ passion and interest? So the school doesn’t prepare you for a life where you choose the job or business.

You love And that’s why you think you’re working hard Mark Twain said “ Find a job you enjoy doing. And you will never have to work a day in your life.”. If you find a career, you love you’ll, never Have to work in your entire life, because every day looks like a game for you Not just that your days will seem like you’re Playing all through you’re also much more likely to become rich faster than everyone I’ll explain how this works: Working, hard playing games, Around the year 2011, I lived shortly with a man who is addicted to article games.

This guy loves article games so much that he Would wake up at 03:00hours to play games? I couldn’t believe this story, if not because It happened right in front of my eyes Now. The question is, why does this guy spend So many hours to play games Very simple. He loves it Now. Another question: how much do you think This guy knows about those games, he’s playing Probably everything, Because he wakes up every day to eagerly play.

Games for many hours he’s likely to know how to play those games than 99 % of people. Now imagine that game is your business or Job, What do you think will happen? The answer is very simple if you feel so Much passionate about your business product or job the way this my friend feels about His article games first, you won’t feel like you’re working hard. Secondly, you’ll spend so much time on your Business or job so much that you’ll know more about your business or job than anybody.

In the world and because you know more than anybody, you’ll achieve what most people will Never be able to achieve and that’s how to become rich without working hard, Find a business or job you enjoy doing, and You will never have to work a day in your life. I think I’ve got you to understand that the reason why you feel like working too hard Is that you’re doing a job or business? You care nothing about The next problem, we’ll need to solve here.

Is how do you know what you’re passionate about Think like an inventor When I think about how best, I can explain the concept of discovering what you’re passionate About I think the best analogy I can use is that of an inventor Know that your passion exists. An inventor is someone passionate about discovering something new, But he doesn’t just have a passion to discover. New things he believes strongly that there’s something there to be discovered, Almost every human being, has what they are.

Passionate about, but you have to believe that it’s there before you can embark on the journey. To discover it Don’t expect a quick fix. We know the story of how Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he could discover the Electric bulb Self-discovery is like every other discovery. It takes a lot of time and you must be willing. To go on that rough journey Spend time alone, Nicholas Tesla told us about Thomas Edison, and his testimony about him is that of a man.

Who sleeps in his laboratory, You can discover anything, including your Passion, if you don’t have the habit of spending some time alone with your self to access. Who you are what you’re doing and the feedback you’re getting from the outside world? Try many things: Let me ask you these questions. How did you discover the subjects you like as a student? How did you discover the games you like? How did you discover the friends you like It’s all by the same formula, You discovered the subjects you like because You were exposed to many subjects.

You discovered the games, you like, because You were exposed to many games. You discovered the friends you like, because You meet many friends. The only way to discover your passion is to Be experimental You have to try many things and observe how You feel with each thing, You can’t know what you’re passionate about From the distance, Until you try music, you can’t know whether Music is your passion Until you try to build a business, you can’t Know whether entrepreneurship is your passion Until you attempt many things, there’s no Way for you to know, which is your passion, Develop, selling skills, Let’s remember Nicholas Tesla again He was a very smart inventor, but he never Achieves any significant, fame or wealth compare to Thomas Edison, Why is that so? Well, Edison wasn’t just an inventor.

He learned how to sell as much as he learns. How to invent Steve Jobs, loves computers and he would have Spent all his life on it, no matter what, But he wouldn’t have had the great success. He had, if not because he knows how to sell Selling skills are important or even compulsory. For you to master, because no matter what your passion is, you’ll have to sell yourself. Your product or your ideology for the world, The best way to learn selling skills is to Sell Just look for ways to convince someone to Do something Look for ways to sell something Look for ways to get someone to agree with You on something Look for a way to get someone to cooperate.

With you on a project, The more you get: people’s attention and resources. The more you’ll master how to sell, because selling is all about getting a favorable response. From other humans, for whatever you want them to do, for you Reading a few books about selling marketing And human relationship, too, will be very helpful for you. This is the summary of everything I’ve discussed. With you, You can become very rich without having to Work hard, The formula fort that is discover what you’re Passionate about so that waking up every morning is fun because you have to go and do the job.

And business that seems like a play, If you discover who you are and what you love Then you’ll spend more time doing such thing and the whole time will seem like play while You’ll learn about such business or job more than anyone in the world and because you know About your job or business more than anyone else, plus the fact that you have great fun Doing that job or business, it’s natural, that you come up with ideas and strategies to grow; And make more money than almost everyone in the same industry.

This way you can become wealthy, even while You don’t feel like you’re working. You can reverse this article to see some recommendations. I gave on how you can discover your passion, Find a business or job you enjoy doing, and You will never have to work a day in your life. Thank you for reading our articles, We’ll like to give you another interesting. Language Learning with BERT – TensorFlow and Deep Learning Singapore

What we’re trying to do is probably next month, we’ll have something which is definitely for beginners like how to make your first CNN model. All of this kind of thing, so next month will be definitely a kind of a more beginner thing. Hopefully, there’ll be tips and tricks which is useful to everyone.

This is build a somewhat beginner, but it’s also kind of a revelation in terms of what’s happened to the natural nature processing thing so so bat meat. Oh, I have a background in machine learning and startups and Finance. I came here in 2013 2014. I was just having fun reading papers and doing robots and drones and stuff too, since 2015, I’ve been kind of serious with natural language processing.

I am a Google developer expert for machine learning. We organized this with Sam I’ve been writing some papers, including with this year. We’ve now got four papers in turnips, so that’s quite good, just small company I mean well, and we also do a developer course. So this is something which I’ll talk about a little bit but red dragon. I think Sam will talk more about this. It’s a Google partner, we work is we quite like to develop prototypes for people, but we’re also very interested in conversational computing, natural voices and knowledge bases, so that’s kind of what we do when we’re not so busy coming.

So I’ve done the Who am I? What I’m going to talk about is a traditional, deep natural language processing now traditional here is. It only goes back about four years five years, because this stuff didn’t exist before 2013 because these techniques were developed then. So when I say traditional I mean not, this is what most of the courses online will teach. You is traditional style. Okay, it’s all changed this year and in particular this summer.

So this is why in-person courses are quite good. So I’ll talk about the traditional thing. I’ll talk about what the innovations have been this year and the new hotness, which is Bert coming from Google there’s some probably no time for actual code, but I’ll give you some hints, okay, so traditional, deep natural language processing. The P elements here will be embeddings super useful, bi-directional LS TM layers, and then we need to talk about initialization and training.

So a traditional model will look something like this. Now, how many people know what I mean when I say: LS TM? Oh, quite a lot. Okay: okay, how many people know exactly what this diagram, or not exactly? How many who have got a good idea? What this does yeah sure it should be pretty much the same three, four? Okay! So basically, this is a fairly standard model in that you put in a word at the book.

These are words going in at the bottom. These are we converted into an embedding. This embedding will then feed into LST m RN going this way and one going backwards as well. These two things will then be added up, and then this will be fed into some kind of classifier, or this is a CRF in a classifier. So this is kind of how people have been doing this for a number of years now and it’s been quite effective.

So clearly it’s been beating the traditional natural language, processing, tf-idf kind of methods which are totally antiquated at that point. So but this is, this is becoming less less useful, now too, so so wordy. Who here has seen about word, embeddings, quite a lot okay, so the idea forwarding reading is just a recap. Is that four four words in text if a word is close to a words in a big corpus, words in a neighborhood should be similar to each other in some way.

So this is kind of a big, a big theme that this this principle should apply to all text right. So what you do to make a word embedding is we assign a vector like an initially random vector to every word, so you can think of this. As being like an Excel spreadsheet and down in the a column, you’d have them every word, so you start with the and of and little further down, you’d have city and further down.

You’d, have you know Space Station as you get rarer and rarer you’re going down the list of words and in English? You’ll have like a couple of hundred thousand words so other across on the rows, though, you’ll have like 300 different numbers, which will represent kind of the vector representation of that word now, in order to figure out what the number should be. You take a window and you slide that across your text and within that window you say: well, these the numbers within this window should kind of average out to indicate each other.

They should kind of predict the words within the window in words outside the window, I’ll actually push away from those. So there’s a way of kind of sampling this so that gradually, as you read this huge corpus, these vectors all get pushed and shuffled around and what happens is, as you give it a decent sized corpus which could be Wikipedia or Wikipedia for starters. Basically, this vector space will self organize and so, in the end, you’ll get a kind of a.

This is a representation from a thing called tensor board, which is part of tensorflow, and basically this can display that essentially the cloud of all words in the English language – and you can also say well, I’m interested in words, which are near say the word important and Because it’s been kind of self-organized, it will know that significance in particular and essential are all pretty close.

So this is a way of essentially for free, just without any linguistic knowledge, apart from giving it a copy of Wikipedia you’ve actually self-organized a whole map of the English language. So what you can do with those word embeddings or that numeric representation, then is put it into an LS TM, which is essentially a network which is the same at every time step, but it passes for at a state each time.

So as it reads this, as it reads the sentence gradually, the state gets more and more involved more and more feature-rich. Now what happens? What one issue with that is that the end of the sentence becomes very feature-rich in the beginning that you hardly know anything. That’s going to happen, which is why you run why these in both directions, so you get features from both ends. One of the problems with this LS TM unit, though, is, if you’re doing a big computation.

You don’t know what what the answer is over here until you’ve calculated one at the beginning, so this kind of forces, as kind of a speed limit on how you can train these things, which is embarrassing if you’re using a TPU which doesn’t want to do this Kind of thing so so unrolling it is forcing the sequential calculation so in terms of initialization, most people will just say well, I’ve got all of this really good stuff in the embedding, and that’s the only free lunch I’ve got right.

Apart from that, my weights in the network are just random: I’m going to use the data for my training tasks to learn the task. Okay and typically, this will use quite a lot of training examples because you’re your network, suppose I’m interested in movie sentiments if I’m just give it a collection of words. It may have a good embedding for each of these words, but it doesn’t know about the syntax of a sentence.

It doesn’t know about how things connect together. Basically, you have to teach your examples of sentiment have to teach it. The English lack the semantics of the English language from the beginning so needs probably a lot of training samples, okay, so this was old-style as of 2013. Let’s talk about the innovations, so there are several things which have come like together and are going to talk to each one of these and there’s a thing called by pairing coding or sentence piece which has been released, open source, there’s transformers.

So, who here knows what a transformer is? Okay, that’s more select crowd; okay, there’s also language modeling tasks which have come onto the come to the for this year, mainly and then there’s also the concepts of fine tuning, which is more like an April thing. So far, right, so what by pairing coding is – and this is this is existed for quite a while, but it’s a technique which is useful because when I mentioned the word embedding before what people do is they have a whole list of every word in the English Language that they can think of or every word in your vocabulary and train it from scratch.

On the other hand, if I came along with a new word, not in the vocabulary, I would just have to assign it an unknown label. I have no idea what the embedding word would be. So if I knew the word for book and the word for booking, but I I wanted to know the word rebooking, I will just have no clue, whereas if I could split the words up into little units of English and English does this quite often rebooking should Be very related to booking and the reconned of does something to the whole booking.

So, if you can, by doing this kind of technique, I can now make a vocabulary, which is infinitely large in the. What I do here is. I would start out with a character encoding, so I’d say: ok, 1 for a 2 for B 3 for C, so I’ve got 26 characters and also I’d have an end of a word character and suppose I actually have a like here’s. My initial vocabulary, where I have low repeated five times, lowest twice newer six times wide.

I can I want to represent this more efficiently. So what I would notice, if I did see counting, is that our plus the end of a word occurs nine times, because this is newer and wider. So I then say: well, our end of word is a new symbol, so at the end of my ABCD up to Zed, I’d have a new symbol called our end of word, so I’ve just done emerged and I’ve now replaced all the art in the woods. With this new symbol, which could be fire or something – and I could do this again and again so it you know – er would be repeated nine times or E or W of replacing nine times so and I’ve got an earth sound okay.

So this is kind of a useful English in you could imagine also that the in a big corpus thee would be taken into a single word very quickly off a single symbol very quickly. So if I just do four steps of merging basically, this would allow me to take an out of her company word like lower and it’ll just be composed of low and she’s kind of what you’d want, and what people are found is that this works really well.

For English language – and so this, this enables you to build an infinitely large dictionary just out of the components which arise naturally – and you can learn this without any linguistic knowledge, because now now you all understand how it works, and you can also read the paper and Download the code from github, so this this sentence, peace thing which implements this technique and a couple of others is this – is a good way of creating sorry.

All of these slides will be on the meetup link. So, underneath the meetup discussion, all the slides are going to be there. So I welcome the pictures, but you know okay, so a sentence peace is released. Now the next thing is a transformer now this is a kind of this is for a single sentence piece. We would then do something with attention written in the box and then various norms and free for words and then at the end, we’d have some kind of protection, so this is a purely feed-forward kind of network and in these papers you typically do twelve sets of These do quite a large pile of these things.

These are all based on CNN’s rather than Ireland’s. So when you get to a proper model, basically you’ll be taking in the words at the bottom, with some embedding. You then have this thing, which is a tension, so, instead of an RNN where you’re rolling forwards the whole time, the attention is looking simultaneously, at all words in the sentence to find out what is the most relevant word. So if i’m talking about or going to the bank to make a check deposit, the fact that the word deposit does depend on word, bank and the sense of bank depends on word check.

Okay or it’s not really a linear relationship. These have, basically all of these words, will kind of vote for being picked, and so this multi this insane is for flows up through this model, and essentially it’s is extremely powerful. Where doing in so there’s a paper called attention is all you need where they pro excellent results, just using this attention mechanism without any are and ends, or anything like this.

This is a pure, CN n method. Now the other trick that people have cottoned onto is basically like embeddings we’re going to train on a huge corpus of text, but this time we’re interested in getting the context a bit more solid. So what we all do is we train the entire network instead of just training a vector at a time we’ll train the entire model it at a time over the entire text and with kind of things that we’ll do is get the model to predict.

Just one more word so I’ll give it a sentence. You know I went to the bank to deposit a and I expect it to tell me check and if it doesn’t I say no you’re wrong. Tell me you’re a check, and then I say then what’s the next word is probably for stop. Next, word is otherwise I might run out of money or so, though, they’re basically there B the whole basis whole set of things. You might say after this and a whole lot of words, you would not say so.

By doing this, you can you just use a corpus of text to roll out an understanding of the English language in a fully unsupervised way. So, instead of just doing these vectors, you’ve trained the entire model as well as the embeddings at the beginning, so that was out that this predict. The next word was a language task. There’s another one called a closed task to her. Basically, you take a sentence, and you start deleting words say it fill in the blanks.

Another thing you might do is you could take two sentences and switch between them and say tell me where the switching point places. So if I started with a sentence about one thing and switched to another thing, you could say: okay, if you can identify that is then you understand language better. So, just all of these kind of tricks are basically forcing it to understand language more and more, and you can do it almost for free.

Another thing you could have is a novels okay, so you could have a sentence which is comes from one part of the novel and follow it with a sentence from a different novel. Now, if you can detect – which ones which like, is this a decent Sikh decent sequence of sentences or not, you can actually get sense across large passages of text, so these things can be trained almost for free in terms of linguistic knowledge, it’s kind of obvious that This this is a thing, but people weren’t doing this quite a while ago, or a year ago, people weren’t playing this game.

So much so another thing which came along – and this is partly due to faster ie them hustling. These models is, you can take a model which is pre trained on a large corpus which will be that a language model for a predict, the next word kind of model, and then, if I’ve got a say, I want to do movie sentiment. I would take a whole bunch of movie reviews, but even if I didn’t know whether they were good or bad, I just take as many reviews as I could find anywhere and then just train the language model to understand movie review language more.

So I don’t I’m not telling it the good or bad yet I just wanted to understand what people say about movies and then at the very last moment I say: okay, I’ve got a hundred movie review. Examples learn whether learn to say good or bad and response to each one. Now this approach can work much better than the previous approach, which is train from scratch, where you might need 10,000 movie reviews, because you’ve got to learn a lot of the movie review language simultaneously.

Here, these models have got a very good understanding, a very good measure of English language now you’re just trying to train it on just the fine tune, the last a little bit. So this is a super effective technique, and this is why these things are getting very good. So so, in terms of recent progress, you’ve got in February 2018. We’ve got a thing called Elmo owl fit came in in March. In sorry May 2018 open ie.

I came up with this transform or model in June 2018, and now the new hotness is Bert. Right now, Bert is clearly the successor to Elmo, though I don’t think they mention that so this was done in October, so this is fairly new and so what you do with Bert. Basically this is this. Is one of these models full of Transformers? Do you do the the sentence piece thing at the beginning? You have this whole transformer thing and then basically we need to train it to do lots of different tasks.

So one of the tasks could be this, which is a squad squad, so basically to do the squad. The squad thing is, I ask a question and then sorry, I have a question and I need a response and so basically the question will be. You know when was the beginning of World War two, and now I would give it the Wikipedia article about World War two, and I would know the extent of when, where the answer was in terms of words, and so the answer for squad is tell me what The start word and the end word, and so in order to train this task.

Basically, you put in the question, have a separator put in the passage and then just force it to tell you I’m a start and I’m an end. So this, basically all of these kind of common language tasks can be forced into the same model so rather than build special models for every different task. You can kind of say I want this to perform in this way and use choose the standard model, and this is way too small.

But basically – and I would encourage people who are interested to read the book paper because it’s actually quite well-written and quite it lays it out nicely. So basically, you’ve got the previous state of the Arts at the top and then so. You’ve also heard about the by Alice yen thing here. This is the open AI thing and basically, these scores are very much higher than they used to be. People were slowly climbing up.

So if we look back in history, we’d have had the old approaches which should have been scoring. You know, say: 50 when you got to the deep learning stuff in order jump to 60 now people are clawing their way up and now we’re at 70. I mean that that’s the kind of the impression to get to so this Bert performance suddenly has been a sea change this year. These states of the arts have been beaten by wide margins as we go through the year.

So, what’s nice is that Burt has got working code on github, okay, it’s a patchy to license. So anyone can use this wherever you are. They have scripts to produce all the results in the paper. They’ve released, pre train models, both regular sized and large size. So large is really for the TPU people, regular than you need kind of like, as you know, twelve gig GPU to use this thing. So this is not a light model and they’ve also released in both regular and large english-language model, a multi-language model which does 102 languages simultaneously and Chinese.

So there’s kind of they’ve been hard at work with their TPU pods and they’ve pre-trained all this stuff. We know that it costs to produce one of these models. It’s a very large amount of money. On the other hand, to fine-tune one of these, the fine-tuning can take place in in under an hour or five minutes, depending on the size of your tasks. So the fine-tuning stage can be very fast compared to running this and building this thing initially on Google size data, the other nice thing is they’ve got a ready to run collab.

So I won’t do it now, but you could click on this and get just mint at the turn. You get the whole thing with how to run this thing on the cloud TPU or this is a machine which has got GPUs already. This is all for free, so collab has got TP used for free, go up a TPU for free. You can just run this and have a play with it, so that that’s kind of interesting when it works. Oh, so let me so if you’ve got a problem, the old way of doing this, would you be you build your model? You take a glove in bedding which is kind of one of the freely available models freely available.

Beddings on that the Internet. You train it up. You need lots of data. The new method. Is you, take a pre train, Bert kind of model, you’d fine-tune it on all the unlabeled data you could ever find. Maybe it’s emails. You just put in you dump in your Gmail or whatever, and then you put in the few emails that you care about. You need far fewer of these than you would in a regular model. You don’t need as much data and you should expect better results.

So, as a wrap up, Bert is kind of the latest innovation in this kind of NLP trend, which has only been taking place kind of this year. It’s like beaten all the state-of-the-art performance benchmarks. It’s fully released with all the results just out in the open, as code should be, and people are describing. This is kind of the imagenet moment for NLP in as much as for imagenet people train this the thousands thousand class image models until they were better than humans.

Basically, but what people didn’t realize or didn’t pick up on so quickly was that the transfer learning of these models once you have a superb image net model, you can then use that to recognize images on mammograms of you know all sorts of different things. You’ve built a very good image vision model, even though you’ve trained it on dogs, mainly you’ve got an excellent model which can be applied to lots of tasks and it’s all released for free, and so this is kind of a very similar kind of moment.

Um. Ok, so that’s my talk, um. I will have questions in a little bit. Oh I’ll do a couple of adverts, though, because I’m that guy so you’ve already found the deep learning meetup group because you’re here – and we have the next one in December – here – probably typical to onset. So it talks for people stand starting out. Hopefully, if you’re a beginner, you found something interesting in what I said, but we’re next month in particular we’re going to focus on having something good, something from the bleeding edge.

This is fairly bleeding edge as well, so because it’s frightening – and hopefully we can get some lightning talks. So if you want to give a five minute talk about anything at all related to this kind of suffering, just have a word with at the end, and also we now figure out, we’ve got over three thousand members in this group, making it one of the largest Tensorflow groups on earth, which is country all to you right, um, so Sam and I run deep learning workshops.

So the we call these jumpstart workshops, there’s a there’s other courses beyond that for more advanced stuff. But basically, what we’re trying to do here is for two days and there’s online content as well. We force people to actually do stuff on their laptops and also do some kind of project of their own, devising or or one of our kind of sample projects. If you want to – but this is, we feel that the hands-on thing is super important, because just clicking through some, you know some pre-made modules.

It is not really so helpful these if you’re a Singapore or P, aha, Singapore, citizen or PR. This cost is heavily subsidised up to apparently up to a hundred percent find out if you’re, one of those lucky people. By going to this SG innovate thing and if you’ve got to the right place on SG innovate, it will look like this. Okay that were okay. There’s a little about the the deep learning developer course.

This is a full course when we ran one of these last year, quite there, a number of people with some some people are even swapping jobs after the better job they achieved. After doing the courses like awesome return on capital there, so that this is something that dates has yet or unknown, but there’s definitely more to come after the jump start. But what we want people to do is do the jump start before the full thing.

Just so that they know how to run these models, and we don’t have to explain everything from the beginning again. Every time and one final thing, okay, is I we have a little company Sam and I have a little company called red dragon that we are on active kind of intern intern hunt. We are looking for people who want to do deep, learning stuff as much as possible, though we recognize that people have got academic obligations.

We have had someone over the last couple of months working with us and he’s now appearing at nips. So that’s kind of an interesting thing for a Singaporean student at the moment, so we kind of said when we originally said intern hunt that this was a possibility, and this is an actuality. So we’re very grateful to him. But please cut approaches if you’re such an intern: okay, we’re up next with that, guy that guy okay,

Elevating Your Personal Brand on Social Media

It can be really difficult to work on putting content out there and increasing our personal brand, especially when the day-to-day operations of our job kicks in and and it can be really tough for someone who doesn’t even know how to start a blog but wants to elevate.

Your personal brand, well, I’m here to tell you you don’t need a fancy blog and you don’t need fancy article content to increase your visibility and your personal brand. You just have to keep doing what you’re doing, but take it one step further. So we’re going to use LinkedIn as an example, but you can do this with any of the social media platforms. When you see a piece of content that you like. I want you to like the content, because people will see that as your activity that you are actively engaging by liking the content now you’re going to take it one step further and if you really like the content, I want you to comment on it.

So let the author know what you think of the content that again this gives you visibility and it gives you a voice. So now you have something to share and something to say and again it wasn’t original content things that you had to dream up. All on your own you’re, just contributing to a dialogue, that’s been started by someone else. The third thing you can do is you can share that content. So again, if you really like the content by sharing it, it makes you look like a person of value.

So now you’re not only contributing to the dialogue but you’re, sharing the dialogue and you’re getting other people involved. So this is going to increase your visibility. It’s going to elevate your personal brand and it’s likely things that you were thinking about. Doing anyways and you didn’t have to want write one blog post to get it. So that’s my tip for this week’s 2 minute Tuesday and join LinkedIn this week find something that you can like comment and share on have a great week bye for now.
