Build a successful web presence with Google Search (Google I/O ’18)

You skipped lunch to come here about search, no pressure, so my name is Maria and I’m a webmaster trends. Analyst coming all the way from Switzerland to talk to you about search and I’m John Mueller. I’m also webmaster trends, analyst we’re both from Google Switzerland. Our role at Google is to help the web ecosystem to be more successful in Google search.

So we hope we can bring some of this across here as well great, so I want to start us off with an example of how this actually works, so you can get an idea of what you as a developer, can do to be more successful with search. So this is Japanese website Rakuten recipes and they wanted to get more users. They also have a ton of delicious recipes on their site, so they were wondering. What can we do to get more people to notice us in search and what they decided to do? Is they changed their CMS in order to be able to markup every recipe that is added to the site, with structured data markup? What this does is it lets the search engine know that there are different entities, so things like cooking time, different ingredients, a picture and lets us display the result in a much more attractive way in the search results and the site itself was in Japanese.

So we decided to switch off the markup for those of you who don’t speak, Japanese to something more legible, so instead of dumpling, so you have here a party coffee cake, but it works the same way for dumplings, and this is how this ends up. Looking like in the search results, so you can see that, in addition to the regular elements of the search page, so they have a title, they have the URL and then they have the description.

They also have a really nice picture of dumplings, and then they have the cooking time as well. So this worked out for them pretty well in fact kind of spectacularly, so they got 2.7 times more traffic from search yeah and we thought you know developers usually don’t get as much advice around search and they might not even know about all of the pitfalls and Possibilities shouldn’t we share some of the knowledge with them, so with you all as well, so we hope we can show how search can make your projects a little bit more successful.

So today we’ll look into various types of public web presences and gives you a broad overview of specific details that you, as a developer, can read out for and implement, and these details can help make your projects more successful, on search making it easier for search engines To send users to your projects directly, so you might be thinking as a developer. I don’t really care how or if my stuff appears in search, but probably your customers, your users, the people that you’re building these projects for they do care.

And since you control how your content appears in search, you can have a huge impact here, think back about Rakuten recipes and what they did there. Globally. Google search and Google News send Philly ins of visitors each month to web sites for free, and it’s not just about web sites. We’re going to be looking into various ways that search can work depending on what you’re working on a website is just the most common format.

You could also be building a web app which is kind of similar, but slightly different as well or you could be contributing to a content management system, its so-called CMS, which enables others to build web sites of their own or as a part of that, maybe you’re Working on plugins or themes or extensions for these content management systems, we’ll take a brief look at these, as well as detailed recommendations for each of them and, as I mentioned before, search brings billions of visitors to websites every month.

That’s a lot of visitors. We serve trillions of searches each year and out of those, this is quite surprising for me every time I look at it about 15 % of the queries every day are completely new ones. Things we’ve never seen before, so maybe they’re looking for one of your projects and regardless of what you’re building if search engines, understand your content, you could get a lot more visitors and potential customers with search.

So you as a developer, you can control that through the way that you set up your website or content platform, so under these Sandy’s better, let’s take a quick look at how search works right so in order to be successful as a developer in search, you need To know at least the basics of how it works, and I’m going to take you through the super super high-level picture of how it works. If you’re interested in the details, google.

Com slash jobs, welcome to apply, and then we can go into a lot more detail. But let’s get started with the super high level picture, so we generally talk about three things. First crawling and discovery, then indexing and finally ranking and serving so I’m going to show you very briefly what each of these things is about. So, of course, in order for us to be able to show anything in the search results.

First, we need to be aware that it exists, so we have a series of systems batterer going around following links on the web and downloading web pages. Html files, you know all the different resources that come into making a website like javascript files, CSS images, what-have-you and those systems collectively are crawlers and we call them Googlebot. So the goal for us is to find everything that is fresh, new, interesting, relevant and important, and to do that in an efficient way and in order to know which URLs to crawl and in which order.

We have another set of systems which are known as schedulers. So they queue the URLs for the crawlers to go and fetch, and all of this gets then stored. So you might think that this is a pretty simple process. But if you start thinking that we have to do this 20 billion times per day, then you kind of get an idea. It’s a little bit trickier than it seems at first sight. In fact, in 2016 we saw a hundred and thirty trillion pages and a new link that we see usually there’s two more links that we’ve never seen before so there’s constantly new stuff and we have to decide what to crawl.

How to update and to do this. In the most efficient manner, so whilst we find the content, we have a series of other tasks. First, we have to make sure that we are allowed to access that content, and for that we will first go every time. We access a site we’ll go to a file called robots.Txt, which is a pretty simple file containing instructions to search engines and other crawlers, and it tells you this is okay to fetch, and this is not okay and we obey this very strictly.

So that’s the first thing that we’ll try to find on a website. The other thing that we’ll try to do is to get as much content as possible without troubling the normal work of the server. So the website can function and serve its clients as usual and then finally we’ll try to handle errors gracefully. So as a developer, you have two tasks here: the first, if you remember again that we do fetches 20 billion times a day and we see trillions of pages every year – is that your content should be really easy to discover so ways to do.

That and John will go into a little bit more detail later is to, for example, submit to us a list of URLs. They have like a sitemap or also check that all the resources that are necessary for your site to be rendered are accessible to our crawlers. So once we fetched everything that we were able to fetch, we go to the next stage, and that is indexing. So here we’re going to parse the content and into this comes things like what language is this page? Are there any images? Is there a title? Is there a description and other different elements on the page, so to do that, we also try to render the page and as a developer, especially if you’re building a lot of really cutting-edge fancy things.

You have to keep in mind that currently, the search systems are using chrome 41 to render pages. So not all of the different functionalities that you might be thinking about could be supported by the search rendering systems, and if you want to find out more, I would suggest that you have a look at the talk that John did earlier today in the morning. In case you didn’t wake up at 8:30 to see it, it will be available in YouTube and you’ll be able to see a lot more about what we support and search and how to render things properly.

So, of course, given the huge amount of pages on the web, we also don’t want to index more than one of each unique thing. So we have a lot of systems in place to eliminate duplicates and to keep only one copy of each thing and then finally, we don’t want error pages and we also don’t want any spam. So we will kick all of that out and everything else that we want to keep we put in the index and we process it so that it’s ready to serve to users when they search.

So for you as a developer. Here I guess it’s important to remember that key elements like titles and descriptions are available in each page that your users are creating and then also to check how it’s rendered. But John will go into a lot more detail here later and then. Finally, once we have everything in the index, when users start searching we’re going to pull a set of pages, that we think are relevant results, we’re going to add a bunch of information that we’ve already accumulated to them like how important they are and how they relate To the users query and then we’re going to show them in some specific order that we think it’s most relevant for this user.

So this is mostly on our side and you don’t need to worry about anything here if your content is already accessible and easy to render, but if you’re really interested in ranking and search quality again, Google Chrome, slash jobs, there’s plenty of interesting problems to solve. So now that you know how search works, let’s have a summary of the two things that you need to remember. There’s. First, you have to help us find the content and second, you have to help us evaluate the content.

So if you’re able to do these two things you’re pretty much set as a developer. Now this is super super high level. So what we’re going to do next is show you how you can apply this for each specific thing that you need to build, so we’re going to start with websites and John is going to share with you some very specific advice about what to do, and what Not to do when you’re building a website for someone all right thanks Maria, that was a great introduction into search.

So, like you said, let’s start with websites, you can build a maintained one for yourself to kind of showcase, your own content, or maybe you’re doing that for other people to show to let them create websites on their own. You might be thinking that showing up in search isn’t really your job as a developer, but, like we mentioned before as a developer, you play a really big role in kind of putting everything in place, so that search can pick up the content properly.

So that’s really important for us when it comes to websites. I think it’s worth taking a really big step back and looking at the absolute basics. So for us, that’s a URL. That’s essentially the address. That’s used to address a single piece of content on the web. Perhaps surprisingly, URLs are the cause of an solution to a lot of web search problems. Traditionally, URLs on the web started out quite simple.

Their requests that sent to the server and the server responds with unique HTML per URL fragments within the URL. So everything after the hash sign here. They essentially just lead to a different part of the same page. Javascript changed that a little bit and suddenly a single URL could do a little bit more and show different kinds of content and provide extra functionality to keep State some JavaScript sites use fragments, since these were easy to set with JavaScript.

However, Google generally doesn’t support this and, as far as I know, no search engine supports addressing unique content with individual fragments. So nowadays we recommend using JavaScript history API to use normal traditional, looking URLs, so in short, with URLs, stick to something more traditional. Another really important thing that comes into play with your ELLs is that often you have many different URLs that lead to the same content as a developer.

That’s usually no big deal and you can look at that. You think well, index.Html. That’s obviously homepage I mean that’s like every developer knows that, but for search engines, that’s not so obvious. It could be something completely different. Sometimes you also just track ad tracking parameters to URLs, and all of these different URLs are essentially for search engines, separate pages that we could look at and say well, there might be something different here and you can imagine at 20 billion times a day that could Lead to a lot of inefficient crawling, so we prefer to have a single URL per piece of content, and there are two ways that you can do that the first is to consistently use the same URLs across your whole website.

So if you have internal navigation link to the same pages, if you have a sitemap file, like Maria mentioned, you use the same URLs there. If you use anything to guide people to your websites, make sure you use the same URLs there. Instead of having these different patterns that only two the same thing, and secondly, one element that you can also use is the rel canonical link element, which is something you can place in the head of a page that tells us well search engines or Google.

If you look at this page, this is actually the URL that I prefer you look at. This is the one that I want you to index and together. This makes it a little bit easier for search engines to pick the right URL. So we have your ELLs covered. What else is there? Let’s take a look at a typical search results page, so we have on top the title in this case the Google i/o schedule page. Then we have the URL which is right below it.

In this case, it’s a it’s a breadcrumb URL, we’ll look at that briefly a bit later as well, and then you have the description. So these are three elements on a search results, page that are immediately visible to everyone who is searching for something and they come from your pages directly. So it’s something that, as a developer, it’s really easy to place. When you look at an HTML page, they’re, very visible and easy to find, so we have the title on top.

This is really easy to put in here. We have the canonical tag, the rel canonical link element, which is also really easy to place, and we have the description meta description. So while these elements don’t directly affect the ranking, so the order that Maria talked about they do affect how we show a page in the search results and with that they do affect how people actually come and visit your pages or not.

So we’ve seen a few of the basic elements here, like the metadata, the titles URLs and the descriptions. What could you as a developer do to make that a little bit easier, especially if you have various people who are using your website your project, to put content online? We recommend making it as easy as possible for them to do the right thing, so not just for you as a developer, to put titles descriptions and all of that into your pages, but also for those who are creating pages on your platform.

To put that in there, so here you see a user interface from blogger with a really easy way to just add a description to individual pages, and we feel the easier it is for for people making your pages to actually put this content in there. The more likely they’ll actually do that. So when we looked at the search results, we saw this kind of breadcrumb there as well, and a breadcrumb is for us something.

That is something that you can provide on your pages to make it easier to understand where this page belongs within your website. We call this a type of a rich result, because it’s not just the pure text text result and there are different kinds of rich results that you can also use. For example, you could add markup for articles. If you have articles on a page, you could tell us about podcasts, which is really cool, because there’s a podcast player built into the search results.

So if you have a podcast, if you have a project that includes audio content, then suddenly that content is immediately available. In the search results, without anyone needing to install an extra app which is really cool and then finally, recipes, of course, which we saw with Rakuten in the beginning. So how do you get all of these rich results? Well, Maria mentioned that briefly. Essentially, it’s just a bunch of json-ld markup that you can add to the top of your pages.

That gives us a lot more information. So this is something that you can just add to the pages here. It’s really easy to add. We have a bunch of different types of markup that you can add here, there’s a code lab here for i/o as well on adding structured data markup. So if you’re curious on how to do that, I definitely take a look at the code lab. I have a link here and the code lab includes information on finding the right types of markup to add how to add it and how to test it.

So that’s a great thing to check out another element when it comes to web pages. If you’re working on just a general web page project is speed. For us, speed is a ranking factor at Google, so it helps us to determine which pages we should show in. In the order in the search results, but generally we’ve also found that speed. It makes a big difference even outside of search engines and the various tools to test speed.

We we have a link here that gives you an overview of the different testing tools that we have. One of the tools is PageSpeed insights, which I showed here. That gives you a great overview of what you could be testing, what you could be looking at what you could be improving and then one other really important tool when it comes to search, is search, console kind of what the name says so within search console, you Get a lot of information about this whole pipeline that Maria showed everything from discovery to crawling to indexing and to serving so how we show your pages in the search results.

You can find information about this in search console. Additionally, we’ll also alert you of critical issues. As they arise, so we strongly recommend that everyone checks this out if you’re, making a public web presence, anything that you want to have indexed and searched and looks like a lot of you do so. The first step when it comes to search console is to verify ownership. We don’t show the data in search console to just everyone.

You have to kind of prove to us that this is actually your website. One thing that I find really important here is, if you’re, making a project for others online, make it as easy as possible for them to verify owners so make it possible for them to add any of these verification tokens so that they don’t always have to go Back to the development team say hey, I need this special file that has this content and put that on a page.

So we we talked about websites quite a bit, but web app is another really important topic which I imagine a lot of. You have seen in different ways here at i/o already for us. A web app is kind of like a normal website, but it provides a lot more interactive functionality. Interaction may be logged in view personalization. Maybe it has parts that don’t actually need to be indexed as well. For example, a travel business might have information about timetables and general pricing, but also have detailed information about kind of specific connection plans for individual connections or personalized pricing as well or in this case.

For search console, we have a lot of general informational pages as well as a lot of content, that’s kind of unique and where you have to be logged in to actually gain access to that. So for these types of sites, you kind of have to balance between what you want to have indexed and what you don’t really want to have indexed and for web apps in general. I’d also take a look at the JavaScript site session from earlier today, so one there are few things that we found that are kind of unique when it comes to web apps.

That, generally, don’t play such a big role on websites in general, especially if you’re making normal HTML pages. The first one is how to actually find URLs on your site. So we talked about URLs briefly Maria mentioned how important they are for discovering pages and within web apps. We’ve seen that people sometimes don’t use traditional anchor tags to. Let us know about your ELLs, so in particular we we love finding things like this.

Where we’ve have an a tag, we have a link to a page. We control that it’s really easy to find. It’s a lot trickier when you have something like a span that essentially just calls a JavaScript function with an onclick handler, then search engines when they look at that. But, like I don’t know what what do we need to do here? Does this show a dialog? Does it show new page? Does this go somewhere? We don’t know so we can’t crawl this kind of a link.

So what you can do, if you want to have an onclick handler and handle things in JavaScript, is combine the two. So you have your onclick handler and you have your href attribute to. Let us know about the other page that we can go off and crawl. Another extreme when it comes to web apps is that we often run into situations where we see tons of different URLs, which makes it again quite inefficient to actually crawl through.

So there are different things that you can do here to. Let us know about this. The first is obviously to avoid actually going off and crawling all of these different URLs. So if these don’t provide unique functionality that you need to have indexed separately, maybe you can use other ways of linking to them other than a element. Another thing that you can do is within search console tell us about individual parameters within the URL that you don’t care about.

So this is really neat tool, but it’s also very strong functionality in that. If you set this up incorrectly, then of course we won’t go up and crawl all of these URLs, and if this is something that you care about, then suddenly we won’t be able to index that. So I read out for this, but this is a great way of handling this kind of duplication within a website. Again like like we talked about before a lot of web apps use, JavaScript frameworks and for JavaScript frameworks.

You have to read out for some of specific details as well, so that we can actually render the content that we can crawl and index the content in an efficient way for that. I’d really refer back to the JavaScript side session that we had this morning. A really quick way, if you just want to have a short view of whether or not your javascript site your web app works for search, is to use a mobile-friendly test which is shown here, which shows the mobile view as mobile Googlebot would show.

This is really important for us because we’re switching to mobile first indexing, where Googlebot is actually using a mobile device to for all pages rather than a desktop device. So definitely make sense to check this out and we also have a bunch of best practices and general guidelines that that apply more to web apps that you can check out in the other session as well. So what do you do if you’re not just building one application or one website, but rather a whole platform? I don’t know Maria.

Can you tell us more? I have some ideas all right, so you could be building an individual site or a web app for someone or for yourself or you could be contributing to an entire content management system or another hosting platform. And here what I mean by this is any type of platform where other people can create their own online presence, so it can come in different flavors, for example, it could be something like WordPress, where you could download it and host it on your own server or It could be a fully hosted system, plus your own domain, like Squarespace, for example, or it could be something where you just get a URL on their own domain and also it’s hosted by them like Tumblr.

So there are all these different flavors and you could be working for a system like this which, in its own turn, has a bunch of users. So what you do affects all of these people, and that is a lot of power and a lot of responsibility. So we’re going to talk about what can you do to make all these people successful in search by making some changes to the platform itself? And this is a really important topic for us right now, because more than 50 % and growing of the web is currently build on various CMS’s.

So more than half of the content on the web is affected by the systems and if you’re working on one of them were planning to do so in the future, it’s really great, if you’re able to make those people successful in search as well, because that’s why They came on the web, they wanted to connect to others, maybe find some customers and so forth. So we’ve been thinking a lot about this and we’ve built a set of api’s to help you integrate search functionality directly into the interface of those systems, and I want to show you api’s and how they’ve been integrated already.

Maybe, to give you some inspiration and some ideas about what you can do so as John was mentioning before the first thing that we need in order to show any type of search, information or search functionality is to have proof that you are indeed the owner of The site – and he mentioned how this works for individual sites, so you can have an HTML file. You can use a DNS entry and so forth, but for those users, especially for the less savvy CMS users – wouldn’t it be great if you could actually simplify it to one click and it is possible with the verification, API and three-legged OAuth.

So we’ve built this API. So that you can use it, and if the user authorizes you, you could verify their site, which is hosted on your platform on their behalf. They just need to click one button and they immediately have access to all the search information. So the experience for them is really smooth, and you can do this for a thousand users or for two million users or whatever it is, and then immediately they get access to all kind of interesting stats.

Which brings me to the next API, which is the search console API and that provides access to aggregated stats per site. So you can see things like clicks impressions, crawl errors. You can submit a sitemap through there and you can slice and dice this in many different ways. So, for example, you can look per country per time period or per device, and you can build very interesting interfaces with that, and here on.

The slide is an example of a request where you just pulled the top 10 queries per clicks for a specific period of time and then, as a result, you would get a table where the query clicks, impressions position and so forth. Now a table in itself might be informative, but it’s not really exciting. So let me show you some ways in which existing CMS’s have actually integrated. This we’ve been working with Wix and they created this achievements sidebar for their users, so they’re using the search analytics data to give this little badges every time.

Something happens that they think the user will be happy to hear about. So their users are super excited about this gamified approach and they’re constantly looking there in order to see okay. What did I get now? What did I get now? So here’s clicks and impressions built in an achievement sidebar like this we’ve, also been working with Squarespace and actually just this Monday, they announced this new report that they integrate it into the interface of their own CMS.

So what you see here is the one-click verification when the user click connects to Google in the backend, their site gets verified, and then this report gets populated with information from search console. So here the user can see clicks impressions and the time series over the last month. Squarespace has a bunch of other analytics reports inside their CMS, so people can compare and build the full picture of how they’re doing in search – and at this point they don’t even know that search console exists, but they have everything that they need to know how they’re Doing and to accomplish the correct tasks right there in their Squarespace dashboard.

So we’re pretty excited about this kind of functionality and we want to build up on it and we would be looking forward to work with other CMS’s if you’re, representing one and you’re interested in this. Another thing that we really wanted to help users with is get their content as fast as possible on the search results, and so we’ve been looking into ways to use the indexing API that we have in order to get content submitted super quickly and then also be Able to share the indexing decisions, so what did our search systems think about the CRL and what do they want to do with it? And we worked on this for a few months and at this point is in a place where this can happen within seconds.

So again, with Wix, we built a pretty cool integration where, when a user submits a page and it matches a certain quality criteria, basically they can click a button within the Wix interface and then the page gets submitted through the indexing API and then, after that, they Immediately get a response if their page got on the search results or not so for the Wix users. This is a pretty cool experience because they can see their page in the search results immediately after they’ve created it there’s no waiting, there’s no wondering and my own search or not within seconds they’re on Google, so we’re interested in working with other CMS’s and if you Represent some kind of content management system or a platform which lets users create their own presence online and especially if your users are less savvy and they don’t really know what to do with search.

We are really interested in talking to you to see if it might be a good fit to participate in the CMS Partnership Program. So, there’s a link on the slide which will take you to a forum and there you can tell us a little bit more about who you represent and how you would like to work with us. So, looking forward to hearing from some of you hopefully now you could be contributing not just to the core product of the CMS, but to a bunch of other things which people install in order to enhance the functionality of their site.

And one of those things are plugins now plugging here is defined as any kind of add-on that people would add to their site. So, for example, things like a shopping, cart or maybe a way to add reviews or a comment plug-in things like that. So while it can enhance the functionality of the site, it can also significantly alter the functionality of the site in terms of performance and other factors. So I wanted to give you a few tips on what to do if you’re building plugins.

First of all make sure that it doesn’t slow down the performance of the site. So, in order to do this, have a test site, install the plug-in and then use our speed tools to make sure that the site with the plug-in is doing just as well as the site without the plugin. This is webpagetest.Org, which is one of the performance tools that we have, and the neat part about it is that it will give you a super, detailed breakdown, a float loaded and when so, you can see how your plugin is affecting the performance of this site.

So test that out, then, if you’re building a comment plug-in and if you been on the Internet in general, you will know that there are a lot of comments out there, which are maybe a little bit less valuable than other comments and especially in some cases there Altogether, spammy or there bots, which are going around and posting auto-generated stuff in order to create links that they’re hoping search engines will follow to some spammy websites.

This is not pleasant for any user and you can actually help them out a little bit if you’re, building a plugin like this by adding a specific type of annotation to those links by default, so that search engines know not to trust them. This is a link attribute that we call nofollow and basically, what it does is. It will just tell the search engines. Don’t follow this link, don’t trust it. So, if you’re building a comment plug-in, definitely consider adding this to the links in the comments.

Finally and kind of most, unfortunately, we’ve noticed that one of the main vectors for attack on websites and attacks on websites are increasing is hacks through plugins. So a lot of hackers and malicious other malicious people will get access to a site through an old plugin and if you’re, building plugins there’s a few things, you can do to make sure that your users are not affected by this. First of all make sure that every time you add an update, everybody who has this plug-in automatically receives it then make sure to follow coding, best practices so that there’s no backdoors that the hackers can exploit.

And finally, if you get tired of this plug-in and decide not to support it anymore, make sure it’s clear to people that this is not supported, so they don’t go ahead and install something that is actually making their site more vulnerable themes are another thing that is Very closely related to CMS’s and a lot of people install them and though, in order to improve the appearance of their scientific Euler or give it a specific like feel, so they can change how the site looks on how users perceive it.

But they can also really affect performance and they can also affect mobile friendliness. So again, here test your theme make sure that it’s responsive. You can do this with the mobile-friendly test that John was showing earlier and for performance. Specifically, we recommend again having a test site and then, with the theme and with another theme, having a look at how it performs lighthouse is one of our speed tools, which is really useful in this case, because it’s in the browser you don’t need to have have The site process, by search in order to test it so here’s a blogger site, the we use for purposes of this example.

We install the theme and then we use lighthouse to do the performance testing. So you see how long it takes actually until what they call the first meaningful paint, which is when all the elements appear to the user. So the overall score for this team was not super great and also the specific user metrics with we’re not great either. But then we went ahead and we switched to another theme, so you can see here it’s much much faster to load and the user can interact with it much faster as well and consequentially.

The score is also great. So if you’re building themes definitely make sure that it’s performant and also that it’s responsive by using the free tools that we provide so there’s a lot of stuff that we cover today and hopefully for any of these things that we’ve told you that you might be Building you now have enough tools and equipment to go ahead and make improvements and make your users happy and more successful in search.

We know that there’s many many different details and links that we provided. So if you have to remember just four things: pay attention to what John is going to tell you right now, all right thanks wow, that was a lot. Ok, look looking back at these things! There are a few common elements that that we covered that came up again and again. So first is remember the basics, URLs titles and descriptions they do matter.

They do play a big role when it comes to search. They play a big role in how people come to your site through search. Secondly, remember to take advantage of structured data like the Rakuten example in the beginning. Obviously, they saw a big change in the traffic from search even without ranking changes just by making their search results. Look a lot more visually appealing and then take advantage of all of the tools and api’s that we have available so use.

The search console understand how search console works, use the api’s from search console to make it better for your users, people who are using your products to really create fantastic web presences and then fine, especially if you’re, making something for other people to create web presences. In make it as easy as possible for them to do the right thing as well, so make it easy for them to put the right fields in in to add data about titles and descriptions on pages, make it easy for them to really create high performance.

Web pages, so these are only some general tips I think, to get started with they’re. Obviously, a lot of different aspects that come into play with search, but we think these are aspects are really critical to start with, and we have a lot more information in our developer Center developer guides. We have a search console Help Center with a lot of more information about search in general and specifically about search console.

If you have any more questions today will be in the web, and payment sandbox area later today, so feel free to come by there as well and finally, there of course other ways to reach out to us online as well. So you can find us on Twitter. We do live office hours hangouts, where you can join us with a YouTube, live hangout, we’re available in the webmaster help forum. If you have any questions, so don’t don’t let questions kind of stick around make sure you get answers to them from from us.

If you need them, we hope you found this introduction into search interesting. Thank you all for coming. We wish you and your projects more success online through Google search. Thank you.

Install Resolve on Ubuntu Linux – How to get professional editing in linux

So this is a Linux distribution and is my distribution of choice. Blackmagic Design likes sent OS, I’m not a fan. So I installed this for some benchmarking on Ubuntu and I got some questions: hey how’d, you make that work. So let’s take a look today at how we made it work here in Ubuntu Linux.

First thing I did was install the base version with the proprietary Nvidia graphics cards. Now I am at Blackmagic comm, slash support and I clicked on resolve and fusion in the menu above then, I downloaded the Linux version of studio 16. 1.1. This will work the same as it will in the free version. If you do not have a studio license, it’s now downloading the studio version and will zip ahead and the download is complete.

I’ve opened this in the archive manager so that I can read the installation instructions, which is one of two files that are handed to you. One is a shell script and one is this installation instructions. The instructions primarily tell you to run Sint OS again, not my favorite. As you can see on the left, I’ve opened my terminal window browsed to My Documents, folder, where I downloaded and extracted the tarball that they sent me and I ran the script, typing dot and slash and then the install script name.

Now you can see it’s running the normal install that you’re used to. In fact this will complete it copies the binaries and the configuration files that you would expect to your hard drive so where’s the snack. Well, I can tell you you saw, it looks like it’s positively finished the install and it has, but now I’m going to change directory to opt resolve and then here I will run the resolve there. We go program, dot, slash resolved and it will now tell me what my issue is.

I’ve tried to run it. It says, live open, CLS, o dot. One cannot open. This is because DaVinci Resolve is referencing, a library it believes should be in my operating system. We boot to, however, does not include that library from default, so I will search for it here in my browser and ask how do I install this in and boot? Do I get a very quick answer with apt and I’ll use apt to know install from a repository a beautiful thing about searching that here we go direct commands.

I can run that will download and install the software that I need if I can type my password when it asks you the. Why means? Yes, I want to download and install it’s capitalized, because it is the default you could just hit enter. Now that I have the libraries installed, I’m ready to run it again, so here an opt resolve bin. You can use the up-arrow to run it again boom there we go. I now have the welcome screen in Linux.

You will soon learn to hate the welcome screen. The welcome screen hangs here and you have to use one of a few different options to delete it or close the program. The first is in the top left corner of your screen. Davinci Resolve introduction quit. The other option is to wait for this to timeout and force quit either of those work, but you’ve got to be patient. This will take two four five eight minutes get comfortable.

This is the only time this will happen now. I will accelerate the speed here. We’re waiting on the force quit to pop up. It feels like forever. Now just wait till you get to do this in real life. Here it pops up and we’re going to choose force quit. That does not mean that it will immediately force quit. However, it does happen pretty quickly, so it kills it off and now I have DaVinci Resolve studio, launching we’re home free right in the launch dialog here in the focus window, we’ll get to a point where it searches for control surfaces scans for every USB device.

In my machine and then it tries to load the waveform monitor when that happens, it tries to instantiate CUDA. How do I know that? Well, let’s take a look. I killed off resolve and now we can see as I scroll back through the log history, that I’ve got here in my window from running resolve from the window. I can see where the logs are stored here in my config, if I’d like, but I’ve got some helpful data here in this stream.

So I see all the USB devices being referenced as we saw it was trying to find a console, and if I look through it, I can look for keywords like error info or problem. Let’s say I don’t see anything though nothing’s calling out to me, so what I’ve done is I’ve gone into opt resolve logs here, there’s one file that I’ve concatenated out to my screen using the cat command and I will scroll back up through it.

This is a line by line log that I can see info error and warn messages. So I’m looking through this Center column, where you see my mouse for error, so socket failed. Well, that’s because it’s not able to open a console or panel, I’m okay, with that. I don’t have one of those next, I’m looking initially in GPU board. This is a good spot to start and Oh unable to load, live CUDA from user live 64 or live CUDA, hmm! Well.

I have CUDA installed because I installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers. Maybe it’s a problem where they can’t talk to each other, so hey I’ll, search that library. I want to see where I might find it here on my workstation, if I have it or where I can get it. If I don’t check this out, one of the first results is live. Cuda cannot be found. Hmm that makes sense. Look through it. It looks like sure enough.

It should be there. Oh wait. This log post is from 2016 boy, that’s a while back. You know what I’m going to find something else now I’ll try and find something more specific to my situation. 2016 is a little out there, so I’m looking down, I see 2017 2018 tensorflow would also be referencing the cuda libraries and look at that. Here’s a command. I can use to fine, so I paste this into my terminal.

Sorry, the terminals below the edge of the window at the moment and it searches and file the file for me now. I know I have the file, but it’s not necessarily where DaVinci Resolve expects it to be so I’m going to create, what’s called a symlink, I’m going to link any reference to live CUDA data, so here in live 64 to the location. My operating system stores that file – I can do that with the command that creates what’s called a sim link.

The link is nothing but a traffic sign. It says when you come to user, live 64, live CUDA data, so looking for that file instead look over here. So here’s the command I ran, then I change directories to the bin directory under site, opt resolve and again run resolve from the terminal window. This time it launches us off without the welcome screen and with the CUDA libraries enabled here, you can see we get past the waveform, monitor, load and boom.

We have a fully working project manager and now resolved thanks for reading. Please give me a like if this was helpful to you subscribe for more content, and let me know in the comments, if you’re interested in more let based content have a great day.

Sales Training for a Transforming Market | Richard Ruff

How you doing there well good day, indeed, excellent and and Richard is part of the of level 5 selling and did if you want to just tell us a little bit about what level five selling is, because we’re going to talk today about sales training for a Transformational market so what’s level five selling yeah.

Well sure, thanks for the opportunity yeah we served about two years ago I John Huskins who’s. My partner wrote a book called level, five selling and John, and I happen to bump into each other at Starbucks and he said gee. You know. I’d really liked to you know, take the book, but but start a company in designer. You know a new training methodology. That’s really responsive to you know the kind of demands we see in my first market, but you know do that all by myself.

You know I’m struggling with that a little bit. I said, well love to come to the party. So that day we decided to join the partnership, and the whole idea John behind it was was, was to say that if you really looked at what’s occurring, you know things don’t look like yesterday and and yet you know the training establishment which we’re a part we’re Doing things pretty much like we were doing them for a long time.

You know we might be doing them better, but we weren’t doing them differently. So what we set out to do was to really try to develop. You know, instead of training, content and training methodologies that that were responsive to the demands of the 21st century market and for those of you not familiar with with six work, is you know now he’s with level five selling looking at and training for the 21st century And for transformational market um, I guess 3040 years ago now you did the same thing when you were working with Neil Rackham and spin selling, and that was the last big kind of move in the in sales in sales, training and sales performance improvement.

So you’re two different centuries, two different two different initiatives. What what we were doing way back when was very much at that point, different yeah it was different and – and I think, is probably time to sort of revisit that challenge. So tell me exam you dick. Why is I mean sales training? Has you know it’s? Obviously it’s something that you know. People look at all the time talk about all the time and it often happens as it may be, the you know, maybe an annual initiative.

Let’s do sales training and maybe grab somebody and do a few workshops, and then they take that box, but there’s, but nothing really is embedded or changed. But how is the landscape changed in the in the way that maybe sales, you know traditional sales training doesn’t meet? The needs any more of the modern seller. Well, you know we sit down and say: okay, we really want to be serious about doing something different.

We need to first of all go back and take a look at the scale and the scope of the changes that are occurring in the market because they really are transformational, mmm-hmm and and buyers are buying differently. Therefore, sellers need to be doing something different and, and – and this is in the world training you need to try to be responsive to that. So what does that look like? Well, a couple of things really jumped up off the table.

The first one was that that we need to stop looking at training as an event mm-hmm and look at it as an ongoing process. I mean we’ve seen it a thousand times everyone in the field. As you know, you got a 300 person Salesforce. You know a company goes out and hires vendors. Like us. You know we do nine meetings scattered across the United States and we parachute in for a couple of days and bring one of our expert trainers, and it’s done in a really nice hotel and and the two days go.

You know pretty well and that’s kind of it a pretty good time. The food is good, you know, and the reason that won’t work is because the scale and the scope of the changes that have occurred means the salespeople. They really genuinely have to be doing some things differently and those things aren’t so easy mm-hmm. We really think that the training must move to to being an ongoing process. That means folks like us when we initiate on engagement with with a client now John, we don’t do it in terms of a program.

We do it in terms of a project yeah 180 days and a whole whole thing is to is to establish a foundation to have a continuing learning process going on provide people with the materials the wherewithal to make learning ongoing and – and I think, a key to That is the frontline managers. Well, I think you know, as we’ve always known, you know, they’re one of the biggest issues is that, as you say, with the workshop model, it’s great and everybody’s excited and they go away, but if the manager isn’t there to reinforce it after you leave it kind Of dies on the vine and the and the managers aren’t going to reinforce it if they don’t feel that they know it well enough themselves, they’re not going to embarrass themselves in front of their salespeople because trying to reinforce something that they’re not expert.

In no question I mean, and that again is sort of the second factor that John and I kicked around – that, in addition to be sowing ongoing versus being event, the frontline managers have to take center stage, though, during that 180 days we train them first mm-hmm, and We train them to to work with the salespeople and the real key is to make coaching a must. Do I can’t tell you the number of projects that I no question done myself in the past, where you know we suggested the company.

Now you guys, you got ta, get the managers coaching and everyone nodded their head, but it didn’t happen, and so what we’re doing is saying: that’s not a nice to do that’s a must do or what’s going to happen is whatever you learned in quote program will Be gone within 60 days after the program is over, so the manic, so our whole thing is actually a coaching system more than it is a training system.

So we explain that a little more because I do think – and I’ve had this conversation with a number of people, and I do think that most people do not really understand what coaching looks like in a professional business sense and especially, and that goes triple for for Sales coaching because most people, think of coaching or when you mention, if you’d say to somebody, you need to start coaching your people.

They tend to just fall back on whatever frame of reference they have from sports or from when they were when they were in high school. Oh yeah. Well, you know the coach just used to tell us what to do and then, if they told us, you know, tell us 20 times and then eventually we would do it and everything would be good. So then they go ahead and start telling people what to do which doesn’t work. So can you explain what does what is what does coaching really mean? What is coaching, and particularly, what is coaching in a sales management sense, you’re, absolutely right.

First of all, you really have to stand back to the point that you just made. You know it is not about telling people about something they need to do it’s about. Helping them learn something they need to do so. You’ve got to get off of this telling thing and getting on to the idea that you’re genuinely trying to help somebody learns and, and the biggest operational barrier to that is the managers just run out of time.

My manager has got so many things going on that coaching gets put off till Friday and then it never happens, and you can say well we’re going to change that. But but but I’ve tried it and in sooner or later it the gravity just drags it back. Because there are so many demands, the reward system is set up for closing that deal not for not for coaching one of the things that we did is said. You know you you’ve got to put in place a methodology for coaching that has a couple of things.

First of all, you need to train the management, how to coach, it isn’t high school football, so don’t be assuming just because these are really smart folks that they know the skills of coaching. So when we develop the training modules, we developed not only stuff for the reps, but but we develop specific modules on best practices approach. So that’s just on that one. I think anyone listening it’s almost it’s almost more dangerous to tell people to go off and start coaching who don’t know how to coach than it is to not have them coach.

You can make some serious mistakes and do some post interviews of why reps leave companies mm-hmm and usually there are some some very good examples. So, no don’t be sad just because the manager was just a top-flight rep and that’s usually where people tend to gravitate to get their managers. The assumption that a top-flight rep will automatically know how to coach when he’s declared a manager is just foolhardy.

That’s not clear thinking, so, yes, the first clear step, you know we believed was you’ve, got to get serious about having the managers go through some intense experiences. For example, we also build in a 180 assessment to get managers to get feedback from their people. Why? How are you doing Sally, and so we deal we deal with it with the skill development and we deal with the attitudinal part of giving the managers real feedback on.

So you think you’re, a pretty good coach. Why don’t you listen to your 12 reps and see what they think because often times it can be insightful and the other thing I think the key to it? Trying and making it happen is throwing the skill issue, but the time issue. So what we’ve done is say that coaching in the field is great, but the problem with it is takes a lot of time. You got ta get on an airplane, go someplace, so we’ve developed a way to do coaching online.

You know there are a tremendous number of learning management systems now that are really really good. I mean it’s not like the old days, where they’re great, absolutely great. We use rehearsal but they’re, like fifty others are available, but the point of all that is to say that you have to augment your your field best based coaching with some online process. So let’s say the manager determines the rep needs some additional skill development in handling objections.

Well, great, you know determine that. Have the the rep you know, make some articles about handling key objections submitted on article to the manager, the manager reades the article and then gives feedback to the reps via article? What’s it on what was good and what was not so good about that practice. Point well, you can get a heck of a lot of practice and feedback in. If you do it online versus jumping on the airplanes and flying halfway across the country now doesn’t replace, fill based coaching, but the point is to augment.

So those are. Those are the two things that I would say that if a company says you know dick what the Dickens would you do to make coaching better. I would really get serious about training the managers to coach, rather than assuming that they’re good at it, and I would build in 180 and 360 kinds of assessments, and I would find ways to augment by using too technology that is now using those yeah.

And I think the other part due to dick is that a lot of training in the past is always being set up, assuming that all selling is done face-to-face right as it used to be. But the reality is that that’s not the case anymore. A lot of selling is done online via zoom and what we’re using today and and it’s not because and it’s and he used to be at the very beginning, it was a computers, kind of a convenient thing for salespeople.

You know to some degree because you didn’t have to travel. You could save so much, but now it’s a customer preference in a lot of ways. We’re customers, we’ve had instances where the customer had said we you’re down the road. We’ll come see you! No! No! It’s fine, let’s just do it over soon. So I think using technology to coach is a good idea, because a lot of salespeople are now using technology to sell and a lot of sales training isn’t really adapted to that chair, that’s true! In 2019, what’s he going to be like 10 years? I mean first of all, the technology to do what we’re doing right today will be twice as good, and I think you know initially we got some pushback on like well.

You know my managers, don’t like that. That software stuff, you know they’re kind of old-school and I said well, first of all, let’s give it a shot because maybe they’re not quite as old-school as you think they are and we have known a trouble with it at all. Hmm, I mean it’s because a lot of people have bad experiences with some of the early systems which were like, we actually tried one and we had trouble with it to new.

It was just too complex, and so can you make a mistake yeah. So, if you’re going to do this, do a good search of the learning management systems and get one that does what you wanted to do versus one. That simply has all the bells and whistles 90 % of which you’re not going to use. And I think the other thing too is you? Obviously, you have to take your cues from customers right from buyers, because if, if a buyer wants to engage with you in a particular way, you try to force them to engage with, like somebody I talked to.

Somebody recently gave me a fantastic example. He said he was sitting in the car with this, with the sales guy that he he’d been coaching them or whatever, and the customer and there and the prospect texted the guy. Just a quick question right and immediately the sales guy called the customer right or the prospect prospect didn’t want to call prospect, took texted him and wanted a text back right, but he tried to force him into it.

He called him easily and it’s like that that misalignment and it’s like the same the same, what we’re just talking about. Sometimes you got to take your cues from the prospects and figure out how they want to be communicated. Well, some of those methodologies in the training ain’t an all bad idea. I think the third thing that we we did was we actually, which is the stuff that took us the most time is we actually, I spent about two years taking all of our basic skill modules and putting them on article hmm, you know so all the stuff.

Everything from business acumen to fundamental objection handling stuff, so that means that the sales rep can now, if the managers to the sales rep. Okay, you know you need a little bit of asking questions. We have a module on asking questions. They can turn on their iPhone. 10 minutes and take a look at best practices for that, and we have 38 of these things, and so the beauty of that is that is that every manager – and I think this point is important.

John today, every manager can individualize the training to their reps. The old days we used to customize the program, but all three hundred reps went through we’ve customized to the company enough. It was customized to the company, that’s right and people where, whereas when we stopped to think about it, you have to be able to customize it to the end and the only way we can figure out how to do. That is to put the stuff on on article, and that means that manager a can say to a given rep here are the three things you need to learn and they can pick three other skill sets mm-hmm the RET next door needs to learn and they’re all On their iPhone that, I think, is a substantial difference in delivery.

Yeah! No, I think that’s huge and it because at the end of the day you know, especially for especially for you know, experienced reps. I mean it’s, it’s tough if you put them through a standard program yeah, maybe it’s customized to the to the company, but they have to go through stuff that they’re already really good at and maybe they have to. You know go through half but before they get to bits that are actually useful for them, but the the way you’re outlining to be able to give people specifically like surgical, targeted bits of training that address their specific need, you’re going to get much better adoption.

For that too, it’s it’s a big deal because you know, particularly in today’s market. You know with how complex the selling process is. You have differences of skill sets from you know. Very you know young people that are in their twenties. The older folks are they’re in their 50s. You have different generations, which are which are used to learning in in different ways and to say well we’re going to put you all through that program in Phoenix Arizona, use some powerpoints, but not too hard, so yeah.

So we think you know, I think, the three themes of the thing about thinking about it as a continuous process versus stuff. In an event, the idea that stop kidding yourself, the coaching is a must do – is the second and the third is the trainings got to be available anytime anyplace and it has to be customized to the individual. That, I think, is the substantially different set of ideas. I love that idea of it being on the smartphone, because I think, because one of the things that I bump up against all the time is this idea, people think they’re so busy right, we’re busier than we’ve ever been and I’m like are we dough? Is it more that we’re more distracted than we’ve ever been, but the reality is that we become so reliant on these things that producing your short articles targeted at my training available on my smartphone.

It’s a higher probability, I’m going to access that when I’m sitting in an airport or at lunchtime or whatever it is, then it then, if I have to if it’s something more complex than I have to access well, we had a great example that one one of Our clients called Saturday, the other advantage of that is this also a real-time. You know the guy was almost one of his reps was about to make a call and uh and said you know he knew the call was going to have a lot of objections, so he just he just had just at his car and the module is 10 Minutes long, so he sat him and listen again to the module before the call, so you can literally go back over the content.

It’s all been quite a lot of time. It condensed down to a ten minute thing: you can. You can do the learning exactly when you need it and again pretty important yeah at the point of impact yeah I mean that’s, that’s fantastic. I mean to be able to do that to sit in your car for 10 minutes before the meeting and you know get to get up to speed on objections or whatever it is that you think is going to come up.

It’s fantastic, listen! We’re bumping up against the end of our time, dig so level. Five selling calm is the. Is the website there’s anything else. You want to tell people about level five website. We have lots of stuff on there. We have. We have a little written. A lot of articles, those you can get free by going to whether easiest way to get that is, go to my LinkedIn site, Richard roof on LinkedIn and there’s a whole bunch of articles.

You’re free. You know you can download those those constitute the sort of core material around which we built the modules. So that’s that’s all you can have for, and I love deeply you’ve also got merchandise. That’s the first. I see you’ve got all profits go to prevent child abuse. America, okay, that’s fantastic! So there you go, you can get scales, you can get a cool t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt whatever, and it all goes through, because so on the one hand the training goes towards helping you make more money when you’re selling and if you buy some merchants or it Dies, it goes to help prevent child abuse there.

You go perfect great combination, John. I just thank your audience and John thank you again for giving an opportunity to to chat with your audience. Yeah. Absolutely. My name is John buildin says pop online says magazine. Kiona conc offer another expert interview really soon. Thank you be good.

I vostri risultati in base a come target.

I nostri clienti tutti, I nostri leeds in contatti.

Demarco. Thanks for joining us welcome to the knife, junkie, podcast, it’s the place for knife newbies like myself, a knife junkies like you to learn all about knives and knife collecting.

It’s our midweek show where we get a chance to dive deep into some of the knife stories and other knife activities happening today. We’re going to kind of get an update on something going on with Big Daddy blade works, we’re going to talk about Thursday night knives. Talk about a past episode as well as look at ahead, some future episodes and in knife life news we’re going to talk best tech, savvy v, con whoo and benchmade.

So another full episode bob force this week. As you all know, we just had our 100th episode. What do you think yeah? Well, it was a turn of the tables on you. I should be asking you that question because you you weren’t asking the questions. Yeah yeah it was it was. It was fun to be interviewed by you. I’ve heard you interview so many people in the past. It was good to have your guns turned on me and it was.

It was fun to like. You know, to think about some of those. Some of those questions and to write and to you know talk about yourself. Everyone likes to talk about themselves, you know. Well, some people do but yeah. I thought you did it very well and if you didn’t listen to that episode, yet episode number 100, the knife junkie.Com slash one: zero, zero and Bob. You announced a couple of special things on episode, number, 100 and giveaway that folks still have time to get in.

On that’s right: it’s a cold steel, broken skull, I’m given away with a snaggletooth MF on it. As you know, the snaggletooth MF is the pocket deploying device much like an emerson wave. It’s an aftermarket device. We’ve had maker of that rob Penna on the show and, as you all know, I love the cold steel broken skull because it is so thin. It’s four inches of super steel. You have no excuse not to have on you at all times, because you can just put it right in your waistband and boom you’re ready to go so I’ve loved that knife and, as you know, I’ve carried a pink one for years.

I am not giving away a pink one. This will not be a pain. This one, a yeah I I may have, but they all seem to be gone because at a certain point you could buy them for half of what you could buy all the others. For because no one was buying them, I guess so they’re all gone, but I’m going to get to a an OD green one. Most people can agree. Oh d, green is a an appropriate knife color anyway. Okay, so all you got ta do is email me Bob at the knife junkie.

Com and in the subject line put episode 100. So I know, and then you can or don’t have to write me a little message, but your email is wrong as long as it says, episode 100 in the subject line will get fed into a bin and then fed from there into a random number generator. That’s how we’re going to select the winner because I’d like you all to have one, but I can’t afford to get you all one yeah that would be pretty expensive, so yeah and that’s the most most fair way to pick a winner.

Random number generator. Every a male will be assigned a number and I don’t think we set this on the last time. I guess there’s no it well, I don’t know, is there a? Is there a limit to the times folks can enter? I didn’t think of that yeah. Well, you know what, let’s, let’s just keep it to one: why not now, let’s be sporting about it, yeah, let’s, let’s make it fair, yeah yeah, put in a nice note, and if you don’t mind us, sharing your your email, your thoughts yeah put that in the Email to Bob too, and we can share your thoughts or feedback or whatever, on the podcast so yeah.

Let us know your plans for it. What you would do with it, how you would use it, how you would carry it so shoot Bob, an email at Bob at the knife, junkie com put episode 100 in the subject line we’ll announce the winner on this coming Sunday’s interview show that’ll, be on Sunday April 12th, but again you have until midnight this Saturday night April 11th to get that email in to be entered in that drawing for the I was getting race, a pink because I’m so used to saying your your knife, but the drawing for the cold steel broken Skull with snaggletooth MF attachment, alright Bob also something we announced Sunday on the episode.

100 show you’re going to be kind of doing a special live hangout upcoming in a couple of weeks, yep on April 18th, Saturday, at noon, we are going to have a just a gathering, a gathering of knife people, people that we’ve talked to on the show before We’re hoping to get a special guest coming in when I have that information I’ll. Let everyone know what time that would be, but yeah just a an online a live gathering with Jim behind the switcher.

If any of you have seen Thursday night knives, you know how Jim works, the switcher, bringing in screens images of knives and different people different article floating in and out, looks like CNBC. It looks like Fox News right here on the on YouTube, but all about knives. We’re going to be doing that, but we’re going to have a bunch of guests, so it will be a true gathering of knife, knife lovers, knife grates, knife makers, etc.

Right and regular viewers have the chance to join in two week. If you have a webcam and a microphone, you can actually join Bob and the other guests that we have the live hangout on April 18th and come on for a couple of minutes, maybe show off one of your special knives that you’ve got or show off a Knife of the guest that you have or maybe just come on to to pimp a knife you’re trying to sell. We would certainly welcome that as well no charge or whatever so make your plans for a Saturday April 18th at noon.

Mark it on your calendar. Go ahead plan to be with us on the live, YouTube hangout, as bob says, don’t know how long it’s going to go, but we’ll plan to make an afternoon of it. If you’ll plan to be there with us – and I got ta, say Jim liked – the the idea of actually seeing and meeting people who listen to the show is fascinating to me. I’d love to meet some of you people. I mean I’d love to meet you all, but I mean it’d be so cool to see you on screen and a couple minutes to chat with you see what you’re carrying and that kind of thing all right.

Well hope you can join us Saturday April 18th at noon again. Put it on your calendar and we’ll see you there all right Bob, a couple of other updates. Before we get into knife life news you’ve got an update from bone. Daddy blade works about what was it a crowdfunding project they had going on yeah, you remember the axis hand axe it’s it’s the knife that also acts as an axe. You can take it out in the field with you and use it for all of your knife.

Chores but then you can also attach it to a hafthor, some sort of piece of wood and use it as an axe. It’s a it’s a really cool design. Besides the fact that it that it’s a interesting tool that crosses over uses it’s a beautiful thing to look at anyway, they were doing a Kickstarter campaign and they made 137 percent of their goal, which is amazing and got fully supported. And then coronavirus came in.

So they had a number of people back out. You know sadly, and it you know it’s no, no, no one could predict that something like this would happen, but they have decided to to expand their window of opportunity for people who pledge to to get one of these so they’re moving their their campaign over to Indiegogo and in demand which allows them a wider funding window, so they can take advantage of people who are interested in this, but maybe right at this moment it’s not the greatest time, but you know in the future yeah so definitely check out bone.

Daddy blade works their axis hand, axe is just a cool, implement and useful implement, but also just beautiful to look at. We all know I like beautiful knife, beautiful things, yeah so check them out IndieGoGo in demand. This is Sean Holman and I believe his wife work bone. Daddy blade works, they have a small operation. I think it’s them, the two of them and a couple of people so help support them and – and this really innovative tool – and you know just a cool thing for knife people.

Well, as you said, a hundred and thirty seven percent funded. Definitely folks like agree with you, that is a cool and useful useful endeavor. Definitely I mean it’s a nice chunk of change to raise for this project. So, let’s, let’s help them get this thing to market blade, daddy bone works. You can just use your favorite search engine and find them there Thursday night knives want to kind of mention that and promote that a little bit before we get into knife life news a Thursday night knives Bob’s a live article show has been going on now since Late last year, I think it started in November or December of last year pretty much every week we may have missed one or two during the holiday period or whatever, but it’s a regular Thursday night at 10:00 p.

M. Eastern and this past week you had an interesting Guest, oh yeah, yeah. First of all, Thursday night knives has been such a blast. There have been nights where I’m you know we go live. At 10:00 p.M. Eastern there have been my nights where I’ve had a long day and I’m like oh man, Thursday night knives, and then we turn on the light. We turn on the camera boom boom and then we’re all just hanging out talking about knives.

It’s very fun. I love it. We oftentimes have co-hosts of the show. We have Zell Rick as Elric 42 Terrell Todd. He comes down a lot. We have Alex so of Alex’s knife box. He comes down a lot awesome, guy, great guys with great perspectives. One makes knives one collects high-end knives this week. This past week we had on sly seed. I see Brian love him. I’ve been a sucker for his articles for about a year and a half now and with the he’s up in New York and with the with the shelter it’s not a shelter in place or with the stay home order, he’s been making a lot more articles and I’ve been loving them all I reached out to him.

We want to come on the show Thursday night 9:00. She said hell, yes, let’s talk about that. He came on, he was great and I think we’re going to make him a regular co-host he’s into it. I think he’s into it and – and it was great and and we have people commenting – you know – people participating and I’ve gotten to know some people and and with each week I get to know them a little bit more because more of their comments come in and Now, I’m reading their articles on YouTube people – I didn’t know before it’s been a great experience.

I love it, but anyways Lacey, dicey, just came out with a marathon of his articles. It’s a three hour and three minute marathon of some of his knife, ravit well of his knife reviews with what he loves the best some of the knives. He loves the best, some of the reviews he loves the best and the three hours ends with kitties. He shows off his cats, so oh my yeah I’ve seen kitties would be better man.

That’s that’s what happens when you hear when you’re stuck indoors, yeah right all right, you’re going to focus on the things you love knives, kitties family. You know all right! Well, that’s going back! That’s part of the reason you’re doing the special April 18th kind of hangout get-together at noon. You know it’s just we realize everybody’s stuck at home. A lot of the knife shows going on this month have been canceled or postponed.

Folks, don’t have the opportunity to get out so let’s get together virtually on April 18th and the talk knife show off knives and you know: have a party yeah that’ll be awesome. Yeah bring your favorite beverage. For me, it’s going to be coffee, cuz lent will still be – oh, maybe not well, but you’ll be on the air. Yes, we’ll have coffee yeah, that’s going to be noon, I mean Who am I well if it yeah, you can’t start before name all right.

What do you say we get in the life knife life news that’ll be coming up next, you’re listening to the knife, junkie, podcast and now here’s the knife junkie with the ninth life news speaking of Thursday night knives, this one came up last week. I was talking with slicey dicey about this next coming knife from best tech, it’s called the eye of rah yeah, that’s right, the eye of rah and one look at this knife.

You know why it’s called the eye of Raw on the handle carved into the handle. Audaciously, so if I might say, is an eye shape, it’s two triangles on either side of a circle and it looks like an eye. It’s a stylized cutout in the handle and the g10 handle of this new best tech, but that is where it gets its name. The eye of raw this thing is beautiful, I got ta say now best tech has been doing a lot of collaborations recently, but for this knife, the eye of raw they’re going back to their own stable of extremely capable designers and we’re seeing this and I’ve come Out it’s a it’s got.

A classic drop point blade. It’s d2! It’s a it’s! A very, very nice-looking blade. I got to say it’s got a straight spine. So maybe it’s not a drop point. I don’t know what you would call it, but it’s a it’s a it’s, a lovely blade with a lovely, long, swedge and it sits in this handle. That is just looks extremely economically. It’s got just a slight bit of flair to it, but it’s mostly neutral – and the thing I like about this – is that the whole cutout in the handle actually looks to serve a purpose.

I mean to me: I mean to most it might look like it’s just a flow-through thing to lighten lighten it up and to add some style. But to me that’s a pivot point for your finger and your forefinger. So you yeah, you have this thing in standard grip and you want to change your grip. You slide down to that hole and you flip it around that way and then suddenly you have it in reverse grip. I I mill little notches like that in handles of some of my knives for that very purpose.

You also see it in outdoor knives as a socket for like a bow drill. Interesting, I didn’t yeah. I didn’t realize that I just thought it was. You know a nice design feature just it yeah and, and who knows it might be there just simply as that, but I look at that and I think it’s in the perfect spot – it’s not in the middle. It’s it’s down towards the the far a little bit more towards the far end, and it’s circular, it’s perfect for for a pivot point, just for manipulating the blade.

But all of that aside, it is quite beautiful and it’s going to be a pretty inexpensive knife. It’s in there, d2 g10. You know line so yeah. Look for that sly see, dicey, has one on the way to him, so I’m sure he’ll have a article of that coming out in short order when it comes out, especially if he’s doing two a day yeah. Exactly but again the cool thing about this all in-house design, but a beautiful design, no doubt right all right, three more stories to cover and we’re going to take a look at savvy, V’s new front flipper.

Yes, the X arc. Now I’m I’m going to mention savvy v later in in my state of the collection, because I just got my first two VB. So it’s all. It’s all coming together, making sense to me why people are doing nine over city, and that is because they’re awesome. Okay, they’re, inexpensive and they’re, pretty damn well made their new one. The X arc is a sort of take on the chronic something that just came out this this past year, the chronic or at the beginning of 2028.

The chronic is a as a small 3.2 inch. Flipper traditional flipper, with a clip point blade. It’s really cool-looking, though I’ve heard from from some people, it’s not the most comfortable thing, but that’s what I like about it. It looks not that it’s not comfortable but that it looks extremely neutral. It’s like a stick. Basically. So the next one in this line is called the XR and it’s got the same, handle you look at it.

It’s the same sort of faceted in cross-section hexagonal, handle, and but this one instead of a regular flipper, is a front flipper and instead of a clip point, it’s got a drop point and instead of 9 CR 18 MOV, it’s got d2, so they’ve upgraded, they’ve, upgraded. The steel, presumably actually, I have no experience with the 9 CR. Actually I hear it’s quite great, but the d2, I think, is an upgrade and the blade shape.

You know, that’s a matter of taste. I prefer the clip point personally, but the front flipper looks cool and that’s the USP of this thing. It’s got a front flipper, so the X arc. Now this line from Savi be the X arc. Slash cronic has something for everybody front. Flipper, regular flipper clip point drop point. You know you name it so having my hands on on my first of Evie, I would say it’s probably great.

If you like the design, I can’t imagine it not being awesome by the way in cross-section. It’s not hexagonal its octagonal. Sorry, that’s all right! I didn’t know the difference. Hexagon! Alright, let’s move on quickly con whoo. I knew Ronan yeah yeah, so uh several months back, I talked about the con whoo. What was there another knife that came out by con woo and and it was their first design and the name escapes me now, but it’s a crowdsourced knife – and I don’t know if you remember this Jim but I said: do we need another? You know titanium frame, lock ball bearing flipper that isn’t even sourced, yet that doesn’t even have it and you very sensibly said we’ll look Bob.

These are people trying to make it in the knife world, and this is how they’re doing it – and I said you know what you’re right and if you have a cool design it had some bike features. I remember some features that that were sort of bicycle related and you very wisely said if this is how they can get their knives made. This is how they can get their knives made and I took a total of 180 from that comment, and – and now I admire them so good.

So Kanu has a new knife, the Ronin, which is beautiful. It’s got this trailing Point knife, it’s it’s our blade. It looks kind of like a quakin style blade, it’s a continuous belly with a very acute point and slightly up swept and yeah it’s. It’s got the the usual s35vn titanium frame, lock package with the with the with the vault ceramic ball bearings, and it’s three point. Three eight inches, which I’m very happy about, because I love the way this thing looks and if it were any bigger, I’d have to buy it myself.

So anyway, cun whoo, the Ronin that’s coming out and you can get in on it. Early bird special 110 bucks check it out on their Kickstarter case. So, okay, as I was going to ask so it this is another one of their crowdsourcing campaigns. Yes, yes, yeah exactly alright, so con woo looks like it’s a new knife maker. That’s going to be following the the crowdsourcing route for a while, until I guess they kind of get the company built.

I reckon yeah, and you know the last design was very unique and this one for other. The last one was called the Orion by the way, and that was a very unique design. I didn’t care for the design myself, but this new one is really cool alright. So, if the keep this keep this design and make a four four-and-a-half inch blade, call it something different. Then Bob will be on that on the liner by one exactly, but there’s still time to get on that Kickstarter May 8 is when it ends so yeah.

Okay good point to know last story and knife life news this week. Something are regarding bench made and I don’t know how to pronounce the knife bomb I’ll. Let you I’ll leave that to you well, this is this is a new it’s the lake ooh I mean. That’s how I think you pronounce it like ooh and and it’s it’s a carry on to the the pouco and the pouco is a was their take on the traditional Scandinavian Bush crafting knife.

The pouco. This one is a has a 5-inch blade, a slightly over five inches, making it much bigger and carries a bit of the heft at the tip, so you can use it for light chopping and and this kind of work it’s a it’s. Basically, a five-inch version of the pouco, it’s got a, it does not have a scandinavian grind, but it does have a high height saber grind, and then it’s got a finishing edge. It’s three v and this three v from bench made is hardened 26262.

Now I know when they featured three v on the bailout. They received some criticism from the HRC police about the hardness of that that 3 V well they’re claiming the 3 V on the on the new bench made like, oh and, and I say claiming I don’t mean that to sound like we should doubt that, but they’re Saying that it’s coming out at 62 62 people who love 3 V and know what that means, I mean. Obviously it means it’s harder, but let me know, let me know is that is that acceptable though, but it’s a it’s a 5 ounce knife.

It looks like it’s a great outdoors night and the handle looks incredibly comfortable. It’s got one of those d-ring drop sheaths or drop leg sheaves, and it’s got a little slot in it to put a fire starter, so the leek ooh it looks cool. The 202 is the number so news there from bench made to wrap up our segment of knife life news and now that we’re caught up with knife life news. Let’s hear more of the knife junkie, podcast all right back on episode, number 101 of the knife junkie! Podcast and it’s time for our state of the collection segment, if you will Bob gets a chance to talk about a couple of new knives and his collection or knives at on the way in his collection or knives that have been in his collection that he’s updating Or doing something special with and today in the state of the collection, we’re going to talk about, as Bob mentioned earlier, his first savvy, but we’re also going to talk about the for Praetorian.

So you want to start with Praetorian or cv I’ll start with the Praetorian. There’s not much to say yet, but ever since Greg Medford came on the show, I’ve been interested in Medford knives and then Alex Alex so of Alex’s knife box dangled this Medford slim MIDI in front of me and I had to buy it and it’s amazing and I love it and then Stu our good friend, Stu from stone and steel up in Vermont, contacted me and said: hey I heard on your podcast that you’re interested in a Praetorian hey just in case we have one.

He sent me two drool-worthy pictures and I sat on those for a few months and then made a few things happen and now I’m getting one and I’m very I’m very much. Looking forward to this, the Praetorian, I have to say defied my my idea of knife design logic, the first time I saw it I snickered and over the years i’ve grown an appreciation for the design, and now I just got to get the damn thing in hand.

I got to say so I’m very much looking forward to that. I had to sell a knife and a half basically that I really like. So I hope it’s my hope. It’s worth it, but and and that’s that’s all I have to say about that. There will be plenty more, I’m sure, plenty more opportunities for us to talk about it on the podcast and articles to see on the knife, junkies YouTube blog, absolutely any idea when it’s going to come in, maybe in time for next week’s supplemental Stu sent it on.

So it should be here sometime this coming week: no okay, all right, we’ll see if we can, if we have a chance, if not we’ll hear about it on an upcoming Supplemental, I’m sure and again you can read articles about it on the knife. Junkies, youtube blog at the knife, junkie.Com slash youtube. So let’s talk about a knife. You actually do have in your hand, Bob and you’re you mentioned at the beginning.

Your first savvy, you know yeah this burns me up. You say that I have in my hand. I cannot find the damn thing all day yesterday afternoon and this morning, I’m like: where is it? Where is it? I don’t know it’s somewhere in the house: it’s not like. I’ve left the house, maybe your girl’s target, but I probably did but the severe threat er. Okay, so you heard me yammering for weeks and weeks and weeks about how I’m getting rid of my you know slowly but surely kind of weaning wending wending away at my at my ball bearing flipper knives.

But I had to check out a savvy B and – and I accidentally dropped one into the Amazon purchase for some responsible home goods accidentally, I hate it when that happens. That’s like when I go to the grocery store and I scream gets into the to the grocery bag. It’s like, I don’t know honey, it just showed up how did and it happens to be mint chocolate chip. Yes, the damnedest thing. The person in front of me was the same thing I do, but anyway go ahead now they have to love it from eight feet, but yes, so it came, and I see what the big deal is about severe ease.

Okay. Now let me give you my initial impressions and I pulled it out of the box and I was like okay. It feels like a $ 60 knife and I was like what does that mean. It feels like a $ 60 and I okay. It feels light alright. So I looked in in inside the steel liners are beautifully skeletonized, it’s like a triangle. You know it’s like a triangle: girder pattern in there, something that looks like something out of constructs like a bridge when you look at the liners, there’s so much material removed that that’s what’s lightening it up, and then you look at the blade the blade the stock Is so thin in the gym, it’s so thin and it’s got this beautiful clip-point shape with an with an incredible needlepoint and then it’s hollow ground.

So you have an already thin blade stock. That’s hollow ground, stuff, just kind of parts before you even touch it with the blade it sees the blade coming and it says yawns open. It’s it’s well! Okay! It’s not that sharp, but it is incredible how thin the blade is. So so my first impression was it kind of feels cheap because it felt light. Hmm silly silly, because when I looked in there so much work went into making this light.

It’s not late because it’s made of cheap materials or it’s it’s late, because a lot of effort went into making it light. It is a big knife for most people, it’s it’s got a 3.8 inch blade. So that’s a that’s almost four inches, it’s a decent size and when you get into a nearly 9 inch folding knife, it’s going to be heavy unless you put in a lot of effort. So the thing is beautiful: it’s got no writing on the blade except a microscopic d2 right at the I mean, like you really really have to search for it and put on your your old man glasses to find that it’s d2, but there’s! No writing anywhere else.

Doesn’t say Savi all it very tastefully has a C on the pivot. On the show side, the g10 is of the of the cheaper variety g10. You know, no doubt it’s not the it’s. It’s not kind of g10 you’ll find on a high-end Spyderco or anything like that, but man it’ll do the trick for sure, and the action is incredible on this thing and – and I I haven’t popped it open – tell me if I’m wrong about this, but when I Look in, I put it on the spine and look in it looks like this thing’s on phosphor bronze washers.

I cannot see the light between ball bearings like a can and all my other ball bearing flippers. So so my question, I have not taken it apart yet and now I cannot find it somewhere in my house with it, but people tell me right in whatever you got to do, but tell me is this: are these ball bearings that are in some sort of Milled out race in the titanium when he can’t see him because they’re buried or am I looking at phosphor, bronze, washers and just an extremely smooth, out-of-the-box washers knife.

I can’t tell, but this thing is a winner and now you know just for knowledge. So I know what I’m talking about. I need to buy some more savvy v’s. Oh absolutely, but you know what Jim I’m not going to hold on to them. I will sell them or give them away or something because I know in the long run I won’t carry them long term, but I’m fascinated by them. I mean that they’re, really it’s a really well-made and inexpensive knife, but it is twice the cost of the Kaiser.

What was it the Santa Fe by tangra, which is an incredibly smooth knife and a budget version of a high-end Chinese manufacturer? So so, when we get down into this budget realm, I’m wondering how you start dividing things up interesting thought for maybe future discussions, yeah yeah yeah. I have to formulate the thought first, but it made me think, like this is a very nice knife. That’s a Vivi! Shredder, but is it twice as nice as the tangrams Santa Fe mm-hmm? Don’t think so all right! Well, if you have a pinion about that or any other thoughts about the savvy V shredder that Bob now can’t find – or maybe mrs.

Knife junkie has in her pockets that, but maybe you can ask her about that, she did say she liked it. I gave it that you know I oftentimes, you know what do you think of this knife? She liked it a lot. Oh maybe there’s your culprit right. There yeah call the listener line. Seven, two, four, four, six, six, four, four, eight seven! Let us know your thoughts of the sivb shredder, seven, two, four, four, six, six, four, four, eight seven, all right Bob, that’s going to put the but the whatever they call it, but the the pommel on the handle or something like that, the nerdy, but they end On this one or put it in the books or whatever they say, that’s what I’m trying to say is this is about going to wrap up this podcast any final thoughts you have as we near the end of 101.

You don’t have junky podcast. No, I just don’t want anyone to think I’m a total hypocrite, because I’ve been on here looking to deep into your collection and rediscovered knives you already have – and here I am spending money on more knives. Please don’t think me a hypocrite. I’m doing this for everyone’s betterment and it was an accidental purchase. It was it it just did somehow it ended up in his cart, yeah yeah the unexplained trying to help you Bob.

The email me the free API key button once done, you will be sent an email with the API key. Sometimes it takes up to 10 minutes for the email to actually arrive at your inbox. You are now ready to use the free keyword tool before you start using it. Let me take you through some of the important settings by default.

Key words everywhere shows you the global search volume everywhere. So when you do a search for any query, it will tell you how many times this query is searched all over the world. If you care only about the search volume in a specific country, you should choose a country from the list shown in the set Paige. For example, if your audience is only located in the US, you should select us in the country drop-down.

Similarly, you can customize the currency shown in the CPC values by choosing your currency from that drop-down. I’m curious how many of you prefer to see data for a specific country go ahead and write down the name of that country in the comments below that will help us know which country is popular. If you want us to support more countries, go ahead and write that down in the comments as well. Moving on back to the settings page in the enable or disable metrics section, you can choose whether to hide any of the three data points you’re shown.

That is, you can enable or disable the search, volume, CPC and competition. You can also choose to highlight keywords based on any conditions. Matching these three data points in the supported websites section. You can stop keywords everywhere from showing data on specific websites. The miscellaneous settings section has additional self explanatory settings. I won’t bore you with them here. If you think keywords everywhere should work.

A little differently check this section out. It’s likely that one of the 500,000 users has asked for this and we’ve already implemented it. You’re now ready to start using the tool. So let’s get started start by going to Google and do a search as you type, Google will show you the suggested keywords and keywords everywhere: we’ll add the search volume, CPC and Adwords competition data to each of them.

When you execute the search, you will see the volume, CPC and competition data right underneath the search box. You also see two new widgets to the right, the related keywords, widget and the people also search for widget. This is my personal favorite feature, and it’s really really useful for finding new content based off my original search. Keywords everywhere works on loads of different websites.

You can see a complete list of supported websites on our homepage at keywords everywhere, com. Every time we show you the search volume, we also show you this star icon. When you click it, the keyword is automatically saved to your private list. You can then access your private list of keywords anytime by clicking on the link, my keywords in the menu. Your keywords are shown with the global data, as well as the data for the country you’ve chosen in the settings page in my settings page.

You can see that I’ve chosen us, so it shows me data on the left and us data on the right and that’s about it for this article. If you find keywords everywhere useful, you should definitely check out our advanced SEO browser add-on called SEO. Minion, it’s even better thanks for reading guys and best of luck with your keyword, research,

Erin Condren Deluxe Monthly Planner | #ECDeluxeMonthlyPlanner

Today we are going to be going through the new 2018-2019 deluxe monthly planner from Erin Condren, as well as I’m going to be sharing what I’m going to be using this particular planner for this year, as well as how I’m kind of setting stuff up. I haven’t set up anything specific just yet, but I’ve putting notes in here and all that good stuff. So I just want to show you how I’m going to use it.

I want to start out this article by saying thank you to the Erin Condren team. They so graciously. Let me pick out a planner to show you guys. So, let’s move it right along first off the woven wonder pattern. I am kind of obsessed with this pattern. I don’t think since I’ve been using your encounter, which has been a few years, I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a pattern style for the year.

As I am about this one, I actually have the washi tape sitting right here. I’m going to think I’m going to have my accessories article up before this one. So if I have that article up already, I will link it up in a card for you guys, but I decided to go with a neutral cover. It just says: fde on it. This one I’m actually going to be using for all things a favorite daughter, Emily, as some of you know that read so my budgeting articles or have been a longtime subscriber.

I do actually have my own LLC that I run a bunch of things through. So this is going to be like this, so this also encompasses like my youtube and things like that, we’ll get into that in a little bit, but the cover choice I did was obviously the woven Wonder and I personalized it and I did the white personalization and I believe that this cover is in the light taupe, if I am not mistaken, so it’s just one of the removable covers and then, when you open it up, it says deluxe a monthly planner and you can put your info right there and I did get the Colorful version – and I like mine for the calendar year, I know some people really like different options.

There are other options on the website. I will link that down below just to let you know if it’s your first time ordering through erin condren, there is a special link for you to get $ 10 off of your first purchase. If you create a profile and sign up you’ll get a couple emails from erin condren, one of them will be a $ 10 off pun code. What’s really awesome, is you get the $ 10 off coupon code and then, when your item ships, I get a coupon code as well to host giveaways or buy product.

So I can show you guys, and you know things like that, so you open up the first page and it’s the woven wonder pattern and it says you have everything inside you to be and do anything you want and then it has a little tab. That’s 2018. 2019 and then it’s got 2,000 or like July 2018 through December of 2019. I believe you can get the pad or the patterns. I’m sorry. I believe that you can get these planners in that version so July, 818 through December of nineteen.

These are great for tracking things or, if you have certain expenses or, however you’re going to set up your planner. This is really a great thing and then the next page is the twelve boxes all in different colors. I think the kind of idea from this originally was every month you can kind of have a goal or something like that, but you can really use it for anything. But, to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever really utilized this ever in any kind of a planner, but I do like the flexibility that it’s just a blank box and you can really use it for whatever you’d like and then getting in to the planner.

I am so excited about this planner you guys there are so many different changes that I absolutely love. First of off, being the tabs there’s tabs. Finally, I’m so excited about that the incorporation of the tabs, I think, is awesome. It’s so much good. I think I feel like it’s going to be like so much easier for me to use and utilize just because of these little tabs, which you wouldn’t think it, but clearly you could put on your own tabs.

They did release Erin Condren released adhesive tabs a while ago, it’s on their website and the link is down below. I think they saw everybody doing this to their planners and they were like hold on. We need to do that too. So anyway. Also, a great thing is some of the sheets have changed, so I’m excited about that. So, let’s get into January here – and here, like I said, I’ve already kind of laid out a few different things, so I’ve just put in some birthdays there’s my birthday, my brother’s birthday and then Doyle is on the 19th.

I really like that they have incorporated like they did in the new life planner the next month. I really really like that. My life planner article, will be up after this one. Just to let you know, I did finally get it in the mail I held off for a little while I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but that article will be coming up very soon so feel free to subscribe and hit the bell notifications, because that article should Be up fairly soon after this, so this is very similar to the life planner just the way it’s set up, and this is what I’m most excited about blank pages in the past.

They had had that productivity page on the right hand, side and then over here was like five kind of rectangular boxes that I never knew what to do with. I used to use this for my budgeting. I will probably still use one for my budgeting as well, but this is not what this specific planner is going to be for this year, but I would always get comments of like. I do my budget on this page, which was like that productivity page and I would never use this side and people would comment all the time.

Well, what do you use for the left-hand side? What are you use for the left-hand side and I’m like honestly? I don’t use it for nothing, because it’s too for me personally, it was too regimented that I just couldn’t do anything with it. I probably still do my budgets I’m going to get a I’ll. Probably just get a different planner, but I will use the same style of planner but just a little bit of a differential.

But I will probably still do my budgets on this side because I’m right-handed – and I you know the coil and all that for the month that we’re in so like this would be for January. And I don’t know what I’ll use on the left-hand side. But maybe I’ll do some like goal-setting or I don’t know, there’s just other things you can do. Also you get more notes pages, so you get an extra sheet of pages and I just absolutely love that I think that’s amazing and really makes the planner versatile.

So you can just like make a list. Maybe there’s some like home things you want to do or I’ve seen people use these for, like fitness, trackers or if they’ve, like hat, you know, just had a baby and has a newborn. Sometimes they want to put in, like all the doctor’s appointments and feeding schedules and like weight tracking – and you know like things like that, there’s so many different options, which I absolutely love.

So there’s an extra note pages this year, where that used to be just like this, where you’d have one page, one page and then the next month. So now you get two extra pages which I’m super pumped about, so then we’re into February. So it’s got like the February page because it’s like a pink up here and it’s the same way all the way around so yeah, and then I put a few things in here: vlog you arey, I’m not sure I’m going to do that or not it’s.

Whether there’s a little question mark and then I’m usually in January or February, we have a Minnesota planner addicts paid for event, but I’m not sure if that is going to be happening in February or when it’s happening. That’s why I just kind of like put it over here but yeah. So all of the months are exactly the same, and then it’s got your March for the next month down at the bottom, which I love and then let’s go into the notes pages or actually at the end of December.

I’m sorry, let’s go to the end of December and then we’ll chat a little bit more here. Alright, so here is the notes pages tab, and this is looking forward to 2020. I do really like that this is in here. I love the little checklist, I’m like a fan of those and then in the coming year and then in the coming here is here and it’s just got everything in there. So when you get those invitations to weddings or you have trips or you have upcoming things in your business or maybe you have goals for 2020 or I don’t know if you have something in there, it’s nice to just kind of take this page and then, when You get your planner for next year or the year next, then you can kind of just swap out and put those things in there.

I want to show you guys what I’m doing with my notes pages and I elected to get the maximum amount of notes pages. There’s quite a few, I will kind of lift this up, so you guys can see. It’s super super thick where before there was only like, I don’t know 20 or 30 notes pages, there’s like ah gone now, but there is an additional fee. If you want to get those – and I decided to go for it – because I knew what I was going to use this for – and I wanted to show you guys – the first page is going to be for income.

I haven’t set up anything yet and I probably will end up doing this in a separate article if you guys are interested because this doesn’t start until January anyways and we are still in July very end of July. This might be up in August, but I’m hoping to get it up in July. I don’t feel the need to like set it up right, the second, so let me know if you guys are interested in seeing like how I’m actually going to set my notes pages in here.

So my work income is going to be on my first sheet. So I get a few different things through the favorite daughter, Emily company as revenue streams. So the first one is YouTube, so I’m going to do YouTube and this will be just like tracking monthly income levels and things like that, so I have YouTube. I’ve also got Amazon, ShareASale Etsy contracts, and then I left a couple of other pages as well, and then I can also use the back side of here too, because I was kind of like ooh.

What if I like, expand and do something different or whatever, but I can always use the back side cuz really. I just need like twelve lines. To be completely honest, so I just looked a couple of extra pages and then this is my Etsy PR donations. The value of the item and also my shipping fees – I just really need to track that for 2019 for tax reasons. So when planner groups come to me and ask me for donations from my Etsy shop and I’m able to fulfill those donations, I just need to track that so that’ll be pretty easy, I’m only electing two pages for this front and back and then also Etsy expenses.

So there’s lots of different expenses that you incur by running an Etsy shop and business. So I have a ton of notes pages for this, but you know transactions from stores or Amazon or shipping fees or like any of that stuff. Just I want to put into here this is going to be at the only, but I am going to go over some of the other stuff in just a moment. This one is YouTube. Expensive, YouTube and Etsy are two different animals, yet they run through the same LLC.

If that makes sense. For me, I elected for twelve pages because I am going to be putting in all of my either monthly bills or doing tracking as to like how much I’m spending throughout the month and all that stuff too. So I have one page front and back that I can utilize for that. Also the things that I can run through my business legally. I’ve already talked to my tax professional. Do not take any tax advice from me, please.

I am NOT a tax professional talk to your tax professional. If you would like to run things through your business, if you have one so anyways what I can do, the way that my business is set up is, I can take my Wi-Fi, my health insurance health expenses and also my cell phone, and take that out of My normal budget – and I can run that through my business, so I can actually pay those bills in full through the business.

Also, clearly, I’m going to put anything that I need for like article equipment products, you know gear camera stuff anything I need for favorite daughter. Emily YouTube is going to be on here, as well as any taxes and fees and like all that kind of stuff is going to be in here, so I’ve got 12 pages set up for this, and then I’ve got a few pages set aside for mileage. I do try to track my mileage, it’s so hard, but I do try to track it.

I set aside four pages for that and I’m just going to do like a running tally of like January and then like when January stops like make a line, and then, like February and whatever you know, I do have to travel sometimes to go to events or Go pick up things and there’s other little things included in that. So I like to get that tracked. So, let’s move that a little bit and then event expenses, so my fees, food, while I’m there etc anything else that I’m you know spending while there.

So I did a couple of sheets for this. I did four sheets for myself but, like I said I go to, I don’t know if I said this, but there’s two paid for events for the Minnesota planner addicts every year that I do attend and have attended since they started doing these paid for events. So I will put that in there, as well as the unpaid for events as well. I can track my mileage and things like that when I go there so I’ll put that in my other mileage tab but yeah.

So I just like to put that in there and I’m not sure if I’ll be going to any other events this year, but we’ll stay posted speaking of other planner events. I am planning to go to go wild this year, so I am going to be setting up my budget and then my actual spending on this page. I know that it’s going to be in Las Vegas. I put may question mark the last. I think there’s been three go: wilds I’ve only gotten to the last one in Austin Texas, so I missed out on the first two but they’ve always I think they’ve always had them like the first weekend in May, but the dates have not been released yet so This will be kind of my planning page for my budget and then we’ll put in my actual on this page as well, and I have one page elected for this front and back and then also there is a another planner event that I would love to go To next year it’s called plan camp, so I’m going to be doing a budget and an actual for this as well, and then the dates have already been released, but there’s no location.

Yet it’s going to be June 28th through the July 1st. If you guys are interested in plan camp check out on Instagram plan, camp and you’ll find it and I’m sure they’ll be releasing more information from there. The Gaels from design pandemonium, I believe, are like the heads of this planner event and I do know both of them in real life. They are part of the Minnesota planner people, so I’m assuming I don’t know this for sure, but I’m assuming that the location will be closer to me because I’m in Minnesota I’m not sure if it’s going to be in Minnesota or not, but the last one.

I believe was I was on my cruise during the last one, or else I would have tried to attend the that one. That’s going to be it for this one, and then I did leave a couple of extra pages in case there’s any other planner events that I’d like to go to or get invited to. So that’s that and then also I have a tab, and this is going to be the last tab so far article ideas and requests. So a lot of you give me some great ideas.

Also, I get inspiration from everywhere else too. I think I said this in another article that I don’t really enjoy reading too many planner people on YouTube, because I feel like I just kind of regurgitate the articles that I like. So if I see something from a friend on the Internet, I feel like it’s like. Oh, I want to do that article too, but am I copying them, I’m not sure. So, to be honest, I maybe I’m subscribed to like three or four planning people and that’s it.

I know there’s a ton of them out there, but I try to limit myself just because I just don’t want to seem inauthentic. So if you guys ever have any specific article requests, let me know this is where I’m going to keep my running tally and we’ll just go from there. So I’m really excited about that. I got ton of pages for this so, like I said before, I got the maximum amount of pages that you can get and there is a fee for that.

But I think it’s well worth it. If you’re going to be using this for tracking lots of different things like I am also in the are some sticker pages, which I love, so these little sticker guys are so incredibly cute. I love the little asterisks, so there are two of these and then we have our pocket folder just like in all of the planners, and then you got the big pocket in the front. I got the little one in the back.

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever used the little one, but I do love the big one for like invitations or things like that, and then the very back side. You’ve got this kind of blank back cover where you can use your like white erase or your you know eraser. What is that thing called what erase that’s what it’s called your? What erase markers to write down little notes and things like that and then the back cover it looks exactly the same so and then obviously this has the little.

You know page right here too alright, so that is going to be it for my walkthrough of the deluxe monthly planner for 2018-2019. Like I said before, links are below, if you guys want to check this out for yourself, I’m so excited about the improvements and changes that they made this year. Oh, I should also say the paper quality is exactly the same as last year, so I will not be conducting a pen test.

However, if you guys are interested, I will put up in a card somewhere my walkthrough of the deluxe monthly planner from last year, because that’s when the paper changed and it’s a little bit thicker in years past. So I really really like this paper. I’m excited that they stayed. I believe it’s a brand called Mohawk paper, I’m really glad that they stayed with that brand and it’s very very nice, a very thick and very easy to write on as well.

So that’s going to be it for me today. Thank you guys so much for joining me again. If you have any questions, feel free to post them down below. Also, if you have any article ideas for 2019, let me know suggestions. I always love suggestions down below or who knows, I might do it this year too. You never know also, if you guys decide to get a deluxe monthly planner. Let me know in the comments what you guys are going to be using it for, like I said before, I’m going to head use one for a budget and then this one’s going to be for my youtube tracking and all of my other etsy stuff and all The stuff that’s runs through my business, but let me know other great ideas of how you would use this in your daily life if you had one.

So thank you guys so much for hanging out with me today and I will see y’all in the next article. Bye guys well, folks, is time to kick it old-school.

Determining Your Product: Music or Artist Brand [Digital Dash w/ Kohrey]

Now, for those of you who don’t know who I am I’m a digital marketer myself, I specialize in helping artists, like you, guys, get their songs heard through platforms like Spotify, YouTube, Instagram and a bunch of others. Now what I want to talk to you guys about today is a very important step in beginning your marketing campaigns, and that is determining what your product is now, if you’re treating your music career like a business, what you guys should be doing, you will know that Every single company pretty much determines what their end goal is, or what the end product is with every single marketing campaigns, and you guys should be doing the same pretty much.

The way I see is there are two major types of campaigns that you could be running and those are artist, centric campaigns and music central campaigns, I’m going to get a little bit deeper into the tools that you guys can pretty much figure out, which ones make The most sense for you and it’ll help you moving forward with determining what you should be doing in your marketing campaigns and which ones make the most sense for your immediate goals.

Now the first types of campaigns are typically referred to as music centric campaigns, and these are the ones in which your music is the star of the show, meaning that if you’re someone who has a strong single or a strong song that you really believe in then These are the types of marketing campaigns and marketing strategies that you’ll want to focus more so on because of this, it’s best to use when you have a song that you really believe is worth all the efforts and that you really believe can make a lasting impact That will actually help you in your career.

Thank you for artists. Like early on the weekend, when he first came out, he wasn’t really putting his face out there that much or really relying on his brand to build his fan base, but they were going more. So from people who really believed in the song, looking for targeted fans who were actually fans of the song and not just fans of everything else that the weekend still for so, if you’re running a music central campaign.

That means that your music is where all of your efforts should be going towards. You should be targeting all of your resources back to finding fans that wants to actually just listen to the song. I thought of everything else. So typically, what you’ll want to do is these types of campaigns? Look for things like playlists Spotify playlists are one of the best ways to find people who are just genuinely interested in the song, as they can’t really see other things about you without first going past, the song is so you’ll also want to figure out different ways To disseminate the songs within different audiences, maybe reaching out to different influences, are getting your songs placed into their campaigns and there product placements or figuring out creative ways that you can just build around the Tsongas so and the second types of campaigns are typically referred to.

As artist centric campaigns – and this is what you guys get to be the star of the show now in these campaigns, your brand should be the endgame and an appeal to all of your marketing campaigns and all of your marketing efforts. You should be trying to disseminate information and articles and content that relay your brand to your audience, so that you’re bringing in people who are like-minded and similar to you.

Typically, these types of campaigns are usually article focused as you’re, finding a strong visual that represents you and your brand or represent you in your music in the best way and you’re trying to figure out how to get it out there or you’re working on viral content Strategies that help to push you out there and everything that defines you as an artist. These, in my opinion, are some of the most important marketing campaigns, as you can build a strong songs.

All that you want, but you’re not really a major artist or an artist with a strong fan base until you have fans that believe in you and your brand there’s no better way to get it out there than by focusing on your brand itself like. It was a product now, one of the best examples of an artist who running strong artist. Centric campaigns is six-nine every single one of his marketing efforts and our strategy is all playing directly back to him and not necessarily its music itself.

So you should be looking at as the same type of way you were to start. These shows you are the start of these campaigns. What things make sense and bringing people back to your story back to your brand and back to you as an overall artist outside of your music? So, just to recap, with you guys, the first thing that you should be doing in any marketing campaign is determining what your product is: use, your music, the product.

Are you going to be running music, central campaigns in which you’re getting your songs to Spotify playlist and to influence the articles or finding other creative ways that get your music out to the masses and outs of people who actually be fans of it? Or are you the product? Is your brand new product and you’re going to be running artists into your campaigns and what you start to figure out Barbara content strategies that push you your message and your brand out to people who relate to you and be genuine fans of everything that you have Going on and everything that you have planned for the future trust me guys, there’s really no right or wrong answer there, both campaigns that you’ll have to do at some point in time and they’re, both campaigns that are equally as important and can yield equally great results.

There was always guys if you feel, like you learned anything today, please like and share this article hit those post notifications as well as want you guys to miss anything once again. My name is Cobra and I’ll see y’all next time.

DrupalCon Amsterdam 2019: Quick wins for an accessible website

I don’t need one. I don’t target blind users. Does it sound familiar to you? Yes, yes, what about a responsive website? Now I don’t need one. I don’t target mobile users. Does that sound familiar now somehow building responsive websites became an integral part of our workflow. However, accessibility is seen as something extra that we built upon it.

My hope, my dream is that we’ll be totally different in the next couple of years and I hope that’s the reason you’re all here as well. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to talk about some quick means how we can accelerate this. So we’re going to talk about what accessibility is to make sure we’re all on the same level about the definition, but also why it’s important and the most exciting part of part is of course, how are we going to do it? But the first question I want to answer is: Who am I I’m more dos? I am a front-end developer at new home, I’m also co-organized organizer of content, United and before I became a developer.

I worked in healthcare for like ten years and in health care. I noticed a lot of elderly people struggling with inaccessible websites and that’s the part where I came and testicle out it, but I didn’t know that accessibility was a thing in tech. I had no idea. So what is accessibility so when I started as a developer, I thought well yeah. Well, accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the web, but is that really the case now it not only helps disabled people, for example, subtitles.

It helps deaf people to understand. What’s being said in a article, but if we and if I’m not mistaken his face, almost 80 % of the articles on Facebook are being readed with some of, and I think that not everybody of the 80 % is actually deaf and contrast. If you have high contrast on your website, it helps usually disable people to read the text better, but also when you’re sitting in a very bright Sun.

It makes it much easier to read and semantic HTML. It helps screen readers to navigate through your pages, but Google does the same thing to rank your site and keyboard navigation helps physically disabled people who cannot use the mouse to navigate through your website, but also, if I fit in a very big form, I always use My keyboard I’ll never touch my mouse, so we have to have another definition, for what accessibility is, what accessibility means that websites tools technologies are designed and developed to work for all people, no matter their hardware, their software language, location or ability.

So this definition also gives a small answer to our next question. Why is it important and for many reasons, because all people benefit from it, but not only that a lot of products are being offered online. If I buy new socks, I buy it online. If I need a new book about online, but even worse, we also dependent on those digital services filling in my taxes. I have to do it online, so more companies need it need accessible website because they forget a larger audience, which is good for the profits.

The government needed because it’s legally required since last year – actually this year, it’s official now in Europe, but it has been required legally required in America for much longer time. Now. Look at the dominoes case, for example, and the problem is not the technology web sites are at least the web is accessible by itself, but because of us developers how we implement it, which makes it very inaccessible.

So how are we going to build an accessible website? We don’t have to invent it, because we have content, accessibility, guidelines for it and since there’s no last year we have a new version, which is the 2.1 version, and those guidelines consists of four principles which, in the receivable, operable unsellable and reboost, and those principles are Consists of guidelines and those guidelines are part of the success criteria and every success criteria has a level of conformance and legally required at least the Double A.

But if you AskMe English, as you all can hear, is not my native language. So, for me, those guidelines are pretty hard to read and quite hard to understand, sometimes, especially when I want to look something very quick, very quick and I have to read all those text and I’m not sure if I understand it correctly. So what I want to do here is to show you some practical examples in a live demonstration and we all know what happens in a live demonstration.

So bear with me – and I want to show you some tips and tricks about semantic structure, about links and buttons and about focus management. So for this case, I created a website for you a very basic, triple website and since there’s a lot of hate in this world, I want to distribute a lot of love. So all meat grinder, which is that they think that form for front-end developers, which is absolutely fake, of course, but just say, Utah, so basic dipper website.

This is the front page, which is a node, and I know it’s not correct to use a node as a front page, but hey it doesn’t matter. So if we analyze this first front page, you can see that the page is divided in multiple sections and those multiple sections are guided by headings. So, for example, we have, then you also see my mouse. So we have a friend which is the page site, or in this case we have some profiles and in these profiles we have some other headings that introduce the front-end developers.

We have some nice events and some news and so on, which are all confirm that these are headings yes. However, if we disable the styles with a web developer tool, it’s it’s it’s just a extension for chrome and it’s a Firefox as well, and we should disable the styles. We cannot see those headings anymore, as you can see here. This is me, navigation in search. The browser has some styling for headings by default, but the problem here is that we didn’t actually use heading tags to create our settings.

They only look like headings so to make sure you structure your content perfectly to help screen readers and, of course, removal to navigate through your pages. We have to convert them to actual heading tags, those heading tags, since it’s a triple side, came out different templates. So we’re going to find those templates so first so here we have the the page title and instead of using India, we just use a first heading tag and then we have the and for the section titles like the news and the profiles and and events we Enable the second heading, because that’s the way we have a structure, our page based on levels and the third are cards.

So this is for the profiles, which contains the names of the the front-end developers, and I have a different view modes for the other cards. For the news and for the for the events, so we changed all the headings for now and if you refresh the page, nothing changed and that’s exactly what we wanted, because it looks exactly the same. However, if we just say well the Styles again, we now can see all those headings back and that’s what we want.

So it looks the same, but it’s different on the body, and you want to disable yourselves from now and then to make sure how it really looks like just forget about the makeup, with just the real body, which is where that sells. So back to the front page, yes, so what we did here is created the structure based on the levels and based on the information we have on this page. So if we check the heading structure with a headings map extension also available for Firefox, is it matter? Okay good, so we had the first hanging tag.

We have a second heading tag. We have that hadn’t set, but what we do as developer as developers when we’re lazy, we reuse the View mode, for example, this view mode of of a front-end developer. So if we go to the landing page of the profiles in this case, we go to show more and we are back on the page. We have the first heading tag again, but we just concluded that this is a third heading tag. So if we check the headings map again we’re missing an heading level and there are multiple solutions for this.

We can write P process to saying that the name of the fungal developer should be a third having take on the front page or a second hand, tag on this page, but in this case I’m just a very lazy developer and I’m putting a second heading tag. Right here, just like that, so unable secondhand attack on this page specifically, and if you refresh it now we fixed it and if, if the design said designer said, oh, I don’t want a secondhand attack right there.

You can also visually hide it, for example, but more on that soon, all right does it make sense to check every page. Okay, if it makes sense to us. We also have to make sure that this makes sense for the content editors. So we want to provide the content at the freedom to structured account just the way we read it, so we enable this or is it this style thingy right here to add multiple headings based on the content, however, in daily life, most of them say yeah yeah.

I don’t like this: it’s very big blue heading. I just want to use the third heading just like that, and then it all goes wrong, so make make sure you instruct them how to use those heading structures and the most painful thing is if they very copy and paste it from word. For example, Google Drive and they just make it bold and beautiful. Also then, the heading tag isn’t actually, there only looks like a heading and that’s not what we want alright.

So back to the front page again – and last thing I want to talk about regarding headings – is the way we build and the function of the headings. So headings are a great way to bundle your information. So I have this very beautiful book over here and if I open it make it sound important because it is, for example, in the South States chapter title and I will deceptor text and it doesn’t really make sense if this steps is a couple of pages earlier Right, it makes sense to read it after the hell.

So when I started as a as a developer, I thought I built my HTML based on what I see an individual design so, for example, easy fancier. I see a visual, I see your date, then I see the heading and then I see the text and I normally used to create a HTML structure very based on what I just said. First, the visual down the date down the heading down the text. So if you take a look at this, this pizza party, I really love pizza and I would join this pizza party.

Definitely so it’s on the 10th of November correct all right. So if we disable the Styles again to check the actual body, you say: oh the cell – and we look for the pizza party right here. Yes, we have the pizza party and we read it like a book. Then we have yes, we have the text, we have a wrong image and it’s on the 2nd of May something went wrong here because we concluded the device of the time of November.

So how are we going to do that without not being lazy again so fix this? We have to change our HTML structure, let’s go to so for here. If we take out the template the twigs and play, we have our image right here, so I’m going to disable that and we have the rotate right here and now we are hiding right here and place all the other contents under the heading, just like the book. So we enable our date again and enable our visual again and if we go back to our page refresh it it’s a little bit broken, but hey no worries and if we disable the styles again, at least for certain that the structure is correct right now.

So we have pizza party at the end of November and this lovely picture of a pizza which makes me very hungry. To be honest, so the thing about flexbox is: it helps us to visually change order and what I did here is edit a flexbox to restore the styling, and let me show you how I did it, so the parent div has a display flex and the part The the the child in the depth that I wanted to show first visually, not in the HTML, gave it an order minus one.

So all the children of the parent div always have order zero, and if I put a minus 1 it becomes the first child in the parent visually. So let me show you how it looks like right now we restore it the style up. Guy. Sorry we restore the styling again, so the visual now is the minus one in the parent div of the carp and the date is the the first child element now in the textual bar div. So we fix that as well.

The last thing I want to talk about regarding the semantic HTML, so children. Instead, if we look at all those carts together, they’re kind of a list grouped together. However, the problem now, I’m not sure if it’s a problem, but the thing with Drupal is, is if this is a field, it gets outputted with all the dips, and it looks like this. This is this is just a basic few template of classy if-if-if.

I don’t even know what it actually means with all those if statements, so I override it in my own custom theme: where is it right here and basically it just it’s? It’s a div get the items in another div. But if you want to structure our content in a list, we have to create an ordered list. In this case, it was ordered based on the date. Otherwise, you can use it an ordered list if it’s not really bored, so we disable the div and instead use an ordered list, and it actually looks the same.

However, there’s one thing about the list: is we get bullets for numbers just like that right here? The two and three and, of course we can disable that, so that’s what the phone it’s so we are the list-style-type none and that’s a small issue with that. There is a bug in voice over that. If you use a list-style-type none, it removes all the semantics from the lists. Don’t know why nobody knows why.

But if you add this potato element, we have the content 200v, which is like this nothing more than that it restores the semantics back again. I don’t know why, if you know the answer, please let me know and then, if you go back, it still looks the same and now it’s an ordered list with other numbers with the correct semantics and if we disable the styles again, we see a very nice Structured HTML right, okay, good, so a small recap about the semantic HTML use, actual HTML heading tags, to bundle your information and make sure they’re correct on every page, even if you reuse any few modes and also provide a meaningful, meaningful and semantic HTML structure.

So next, what I’m going to talk about is links and buttons. So let’s go to the karaoke nut and I have a very beautiful link right here and you can see it because it has a different color. But what if I’m visually impaired – and I see it just like this – where is my link yeah, it says link, so he can’t recognize it because I said it was a link, but we also have to add a small text decoration to make sure it’s also visible.

Not only a bad color so, of course, and instead of text-decoration none, we just enabled the text decoration and this text on the land position under and just puts the light a little bit further down the bird. Just like a border bottom kind of thing. It’s not really supported in every browser yet, but it has a nice effect for now in google chrome, which is the browser that I use. So, as you can see now, I can recognize the link because it not only indicated by color and also it looks so very nice if you disable.

Oh, I didn’t have to refresh that it still looks very nice. If you ask me, we also used a lot of icons as links and great example are those socials, but at the bottom. Yet you can see that so we have a LinkedIn, we have a Twitter and we have YouTube, but if we disable the Styles again, of course, we cannot see what our links are anymore, because we only saw the icons so a screen reader cannot see that which One is LinkedIn or Twitter, but we remember which one.

What was I can help don’t be don’t so. Links always need a text and we have those socials in in my page. Sam played just right here and we enable the link text with a small span and, as you all can see, it has the class visually hidden and you can use that class out-of-the-box and Drupal it’s already incorporated and what it does is. It makes the the text very, very smaller, like one by one pixel and therefore it’s not visible anymore, but it’s still there for the screen reader and for Google so back to the page, and we still have linked in the three there.

The icons are very nice and when, if we disable the styles again now at least we can see which link is which so links always need a link text. But if you use an image as a link, the alt text is actually the link text. So, for example, at this beautifully new home image right here and it’s a link to our corporate website and if we inspected, this is writable okay kit, so at this link to our corporate website.

But the effects in this case is minimum local. So if we say out loud our link, yes, I go to Limu home no home, but that’s not what we’re handing we’re going to the corporate website. So in this case, we want to alter the alt text to the destination of the link, and it has to be so yes, so instead of this alt text be provided, alt text really open corporate website refresh it, and now it should be ok.

So the link text in this case is now in corporate website. So not only do links need a link text, we want them to be descriptive and unique, and I see a lot of designs which has this show more show more show more buttons. So let’s say I know, your name is dear Queen, just one of my nicest colleagues and let’s say your name right and we have another dear and another day and another dear, and if I ask you Alex, did Dirk order pizza do you know which their comment Know exactly the case with show more show more show more show more.

What I don’t know so, instead of using only to show more, we want to provide some extra information for, in this case, show more profiles and show more events. So we’re going to added to the link as well. I think it’s yes and enable this alright. So at least we have more information now about what we’re going to read more about, but this is the part where the designer comes in and says: hey. That’s not what I design I want to show more all of those buttons, and things should be the same size with the same padding and not all those large text in it, and in that case we can use the same technique.

We used for the for the Twitter and and the LinkedIn icons so, instead of actually using the whole show more profiles news, we add an extra visually hidden spun as well with the title in it. So if we refresh, we are back to show more and show more and show more, but if we disabled the cells again, we can see that the actual link text is show more events and show more profiles all right, so links go somewhere and buttons do something.

That’s a very big difference and every website, because pay responsiveness, has a hamburger menu buttons nowadays. So of course, this one has a menu button as well, because it’s responsive and if you take a look at this menu button, an old click, click click, click click Alex. Can you tell me if the menu is open or closed? Yes, I mean, is a menu open or closed? Oh, yes, it’s open, okay, speaking yeah, so, okay, I disabled the styles again and Alex this one is for you as well.

Okay, I click on the menu button. Not a professional. Is the menu open or closed exactly my point we can tell so if the button does something we have to indicate the state of the button. So there are two solutions for this, and one is altering the button text so instead only apply new menu, we want to add open menu or closed menu, so we’re going to do that first, so open menu closed menu, yes, and if we disable this stuff, so It’s not very hard, yes and I’m clicking on the menu button multiple times now is the menu open or closed yeah? Exactly yes, so this is one way to indicate the button state, but it’s not always a good idea to provide this only by text.

So I’m not sure if everyone anyone noticed it, we can also add an area expanded, true or false, and in that case we can just provide a menu button text and the area expanded announces to the screen music reader. If it’s open or closed, don’t do both. Otherwise, it will get announced twice. So in this case, we just remove the open and close text again, and I prefer that I exponent attribute, because that’s the way a screen reader user can tell how it’s how it needs to be announced, for example, with a very lovely tone or just with spoken Words or sham, for example, this is back then and their feet.

So if y’all can see the re accidental Falls and open, and that also indicates the state of the button. Does that make sense? Okay, nice? So a small recap about that one. We want to make sure that a link and a button is recognizable and clickable and provide meaningful and unique text and also communicate the state of the button when toggling talents. So the last thing I want to cover is focus management.

So if you’re back on the front page – and I want to use my keyboard navigation to navigate the page, who has never used the keyboard navigation. So if it’s up through this page and you can see in the in the very left corner that we are really navigating through a page, but we cannot see the focus outline and that’s because we disabled it in our CSS Amy right here and instead and now The outline is back again, however.

This is also the part where the designer comes in and says yeah. Can you remove that ugly blue line? No, no, we can, but we can change the styling of course. So, instead of using this very ugly blue line, we create a very nice designed outline look at that, but there’s one small problem: we made it white and from the moment we adjust the starting from the focus outline. We have the ownership of it and with the new guidelines, we have to make sure that the contrast of those outline is at least three to one.

So when I tap further of the line right here and now my baya Buckley and Zig Sebring, I cannot see the outline anymore and it is my responsibility to make sure it’s visible at all costs. So double check your page. If you navigate through to the page with your keywords, to make sure that the outline is visible everywhere, so in this case we just change the outline color when we are on the white part, you know it’s what and it’s a little bit blackish.

I guess down the line, so it’s visible everywhere, alright, so the other thing about responsiveness and accessibility is that we want that hamburger menu on the right side, power of our screen right because it’s easy to tell. But if you look at the rhythm we have on our desktop, which is logo, menu, search, local menu, search, repeat after me, menu something really changed right here we changed the ribbon and that’s the part where we add the JavaScript to make sure that the hamburger bet Button is really on the right side.

Now it doesn’t have to be like that we can visually change the order once again, as we saw earlier so instead, we let me check the JavaScript or the jQuery in this case, if, instead of appending it to the header on the far right, we want to Make sure that it’s a pendent to the main navigation right here and now we have the same rhythm, again: logo menu search. Yes, that’s a new hit and in this case we’re not so not that the menu is the first child of the parent death.

In this case, we want to make sure it’s the last child, so we can give it in higher order than zero, and I gave it an order three, but can be two as well and now it’s back again and the HTML structure is very the same as The same rhythm on desktop and on mobile, alright there’s just one small thing I forgot to mention – and actually it’s not really a legal requirement for governments at the moment, because it’s a triple-a solution is the click ability of this button.

So, as you can see, if I add a very beautiful background, color to this button, for example, background color green, it’s very, very small, especially when I open it, meaning that the clickable area on the mobile phone is very, very small. It’s only this green part. So, as you can see, if I click here and click here and I’m definitely almost on the cross bitch, it closes the menu right. So instead we wanted to make it a little bit bigger and I added this clickable area variable which is 4.

8. I don’t know why, because the the kauffman guideline says it should be at least 4 by 4 or 44 pixels by 44 pixels. But I just like the 48 number and instead we adjust the margins a little bit to make sure that it still has the same alignment that we had before but make the clickable area better. As you can see, I didn’t have to refresh this one. So back again, so it looks the same, but it’s about a clique wall and that’s exactly what we won, especially for those sweaty fingers here, and I even can’t reach out a little bit more tool to this case and we cut this cover as well.

So another thing with hamburger menus is that it hides the main navigation. That’s exactly what we want, so we have more spare space, but it should also be hidden for three meters. So if we go back to the logo, we go back to the menu and then we go navigate further and where are we? We are inside the menu and it’s a small problem because it’s visually hidden, but it’s still there for screen readers.

So, in this case, it’s this perfect case to actually use display, none, so we’re going to enable this small part of the code. Saying yeah you shouldn’t be there display none. I don’t want you to be there, not visually, not really there for screen readers, but when your main menu is open, show it as a block and let’s make sure that the the fish, the invisible elements cannot receive focus. So if we go back and we are back on the the logo again the menu and then we that we can’t go to the children also important regarding the focus management is, if you open the menu in this case.

Instead of navigating further, you want to make sure that the menu items are actual the first child that received focus just like that, but we don’t want. Is this number? That’s not what we want. You cannot do a thing right now. I can click and click, and maybe, if I go to another link, yes I’m back again, that’s also not what we want in this case, it’s very appropriate to add the kind of focus truck.

So if we go right here in this stating that, if you’re on the last item of the menu and you go to shift which is thrown to the next item, please put the focus back to the menu button and we go to the menu News and we’re Going back to the bottom and this course is to use to actually close the menu instead of getting lost somewhere behind the main menu. All right. So that’s my recap. So focus styling should be visible at all costs and if you decide to change the focus outline make sure you have a high enough contrast at least three to one and create a logical focus or to make sure it’s.

It’s the same rhythm on desktop and same rhythm on mobile and tablet and so forth, and to do that just never forget to disable yourselves from now and then to make sure that you actually see the body of your website not only the makeup and also navigate Through your website, with your keyboard on multiple pages, to make sure it’s really correct, and then I have a less sponsored content like I said, I’m a co-organizer front-engine I did – and this is an official announcement that we’re hosting fronted United means next year feel free to Come no, no, no just be there and going to be awesome and, of course, those very beautiful DrupalCon contribution.

I never contributed to Drupal because please help me it wants to be my first time and of course, what do you think and thank you all if there are any questions, I’m out no just kidding I haven’t bought, I can make one especially for your first now. I’d use in this case or just in general, because I use a lot of extensions to help me. Do automatic testing, specifically these ones, but all right. This one was the web developer tool and the headings map.

Yes, sir, a test suite that you can recommend that spiders a site and gives recommendations like I’ve heard of acts and there’s the microphone there. So, oh it’s over there! No! That’s! That’s a cleaver okay! Just wondering if there is a suite or speed of tools that you would recommend that, for instance, spider a site and give patterns of issues or specific issues and specific pages and your level of successes yeah.

Well, I use multiple tools because some cover some errors and other stones and even acts has different approaches because I used it in the browser acts core, but I also used it in my local environment and they both gave different errors, which was very strange. So I always used multiple automatic testing X is one of them that I use. I use wave toolbar and I use accessibility inside. If you ever heard of access with the inside that’s a great tool, I can show you do we have time five minutes now.

I can show you the tools that that I use mainly, for example, shirts. No, this is like ouch. I need the other one, this one. This is accessibility inside and it helps me to navigate through the pages that’s best and it helped me I’m not sure if it’s tap stops. This is a quick way to help me navigate from a page because of numbers. My links on the page there’s a buck in that in the JavaScript, so I have to disable this because I forgot to add resize it I’m sorry for that.

So so claps please. So it shows me exactly where I am on the page. That’s a quick way to test my keyboard navigation. If I lost it, for example, I use the wave to war that helps me define contrast where there’s a small error in this tool, because it also highlights the visually hidden text. For example, if I had a black background and black text, it fills, but I cannot see it so it doesn’t really is helpful in this case and acts mainly use axilla, but any other questions do you use also the screen readers for Mac OS windows.

I tried to use force over, but I’m not really an expert in it since I’m sorry, so I do if someone has a good idea about a course how to use a good screen reader or any tips to help me, please let me know I would like To know how to use it properly and eat other questions see yours truly on either
