Ag Comm Webinar: Detecting Engagement in Google Analytics

So one of the things to keep in mind when you’re, looking at whether it’s Google Analytics or any other kind of measurement of your of your web presence or your social media presence is, is to determine why, like.

Why am I measuring this? Most of the google analytics that that we run for people is for the purpose of reporting. That’s the most requests that we get. How many hits that I get? I’r just curious. I want to know, but really the better reason to measure your web presence are for a couple of reasons. One is improvement, so there’s things you can look at within Google Analytics that might give you some indication of how you might change your web presence change.

Particular pages to make them easier for users to find, if that’s evidence that that you find in google analytics, they might be having trouble finding things or do they make them more effective to get them to spend more time on the page or two or whatever you’re. Trying to accomplish with your with your users, who are visiting your web page, one reason to use Google Analytics is to see if you’re accomplishing what you want to accomplish and if not how you can improve on that.

So that’s one reason to measure the other is impact and, in extension, we do a lot of impact measurement and are we trying to figure out? Are we connecting with people? Are we making a difference in their lives? We probably can’t get to that impact idea. Just looking at the raw data that Google Analytics provides, but that’s we’ll talk about today’s some signals of engagement and then we can, you know, potentially draw a line from engagement to maybe more significant impact with additional evaluation.

But at least it’s a start see if your see if your web presence really is, is making any difference. Another thing to think about when you’re thinking about measuring your website to is to figure out what your goal is me included for our a calm website or web services website or any of the ones that I’m involved in in contributing to our managing. I’r not very good at this either. I don’t it’s hard to determine for a Content site a specific goal, but if you can start to figure that out a little bit, it can really help you utilize the data, because without a goal to work towards the data, is just data right it’d, be like You had an extension program.

If you say we want people to achieve this behavior change, then you gather data to see if they’re achieving that behavior change. You know, then, the data makes sense, but if you don’t have that goal, if you’re like well we’re delivering this program, we don’t know what we want people to do with it. We just want to deliver it, and then you gather data around that. Then that data is essentially meaningless.

You know it doesn’t have a lot of context in terms of working towards your goal. The other thing about Google Analytics is, it is Sonya, and I were just talking about this a little bit ago earlier this afternoon. Is that it? You know is built for the majority of web site managers and end-users, and that majority exists in the for-profit world, and so in the for-profit world a lot of times. They can be much more specific about their goals right.

They want to make a sale. They want to, you know, have somebody subscribe to something they. You know they have some end goal in mind. Maybe it’s even have someone apply for a job? You know that’s the pinnacle, they start at the homepage and they go through this process and they they end up with that goal, which is some which in Google Analytics we refer to as a conversion. So what are your conversions and those are harder for us to identify because there might be multiple goals, but the closer you can get to that sort of specific idea of what you’re trying to accomplish with your web presence, then the more effective the this date is Going to be and the more you’re going to be able to put it to work for you as opposed to just going home, that’s interesting! Hey! We got visits from South Africa great.

What does that mean? Why should we care other than it’s interesting? Okay? So, let’s talk a little bit about about Google Analytics, so Google Analytics is how we are collecting data on the use of our websites. Right now, before we instituted google analytics or started using google analytics, we were using log files, so log files have existed. You know pretty much from the time that we had web browsers and basically the log files are things that can be collected by the web server about you as a visitor, and it might include you know what pages you’re clicking on.

Obviously, because when you click on a page that the web server has to deliver that page, so it collects that data. It might include what kind of browser you’re using, because that that kind of information is sent through as well and some other things, but but but limited information. So before we’re using google analytics, we were really focused on you know. How many hits did this page get or how many views this page get and those kinds of things and part of the problem with that that log file data is it’s not it’s not very deep, there’s not a huge data set there.

You have to use different third-party tools to analyze it. It’s it’s pretty much just rows in a database without are actually rose in a text file without some tool to analyze that and to compile the data in some way and the other thing that we found in it with NDSU egg communication and with the servers that We have is that it was really susceptible to what we might call phantom traffic, so this is traffic that happens when search engines, for instance, go out and index the web in order for google or any search engine to get an idea of what web pages are Out there they have to build us, what’s called a spider, to go out and find those pages and visit each one of them, and so, as those search engines do that that could accumulate views of a web page and there’s other forms of traffic as well.

That that our phantom traffic they’re, not real users, their computers that are hitting our websites and so log files and the tools associated them – do not a great job of filtering that stuff out. Google analytics does a better job of filtering that stuff out, and it also gives us a richer data set. So it wasn’t very long into the existence of eggs EMS that we decided to put the Google Analytics code that you need to put on your website or your web pages.

In order to collect this data, we decided to put that on to all the web pages in eggs EMS, so that is an important distinction for anybody who’s on. If your website is on the NDSU typo3 CMS you’re, not your data is not being collected using google analytics, it’s actually being used. I think they’re collecting data on their own and using some of those log files and internal reporting inside of their content management system.

If your website is not neg CMS, if it’s just on one of our other servers, we call them our legacy servers there’s a few websites that are still out there that aren’t on egg CMS within NDSU egg and extension. Then again, you’re relying on that kind of log file thing just the egg CMS sites have the Google Analytics code on them at least that we put on and collect data. That way. In order to see your Google Analytics there’s a couple different things you can do.

One thing is, you can request access and I think at least there might be one or two of you on the call who have requested access to Google Analytics you have to. In order for me to give you access, I have to have a non NDSU. Google account for you, so if you have a gmail account personally or if you have an Android phone, you have a google account. I can invite you using that account. I can’t use your NDSU google account for reasons unknown to me and only to IT s at the NDSU level, but I can’t invite you using your google account.

So that’s one way and there’s a few people who do that. The more common way that you see your Google Analytics is that you asked for reports, and you might do that as a once-off like it’s that time of the year again, you need to do some reporting, you send me an email or send so many an email And say: can you give me the numbers for my website and we send you some reports and some of you I see Susan and Stacy are on so for the food nutrition sites.

We have some automated reports set up, so they just get automatically get monthly report. So we can do that for you as well, if you want to to, let us know that you’d like to have that okay questions or comments so far, you want to jump in on the mic or type your questions in the chat. I see Sonja’s on tues Sonja. You know you can please correct me or fill in the blank spaces that I leave. Okay go ahead and share those in the chatter.

Interrupt me if you have any any questions whatsoever. So, in order to start to understand some of the metrics that will use to detect engagement, we can’t have to get an overview of the the main metrics in in Google Analytics and when we start with sessions. So what a session is is is that it says here, in my slide period of time, that’s kind of a bad description, but a session start when somebody hits your website.

So in the case of how we collect our Google Analytics, it begins as soon as they hit an egg CMS site on the WWE NDSU edu domain. So as soon as they hit one of our pages, their session starts and it lasts until they hit something. That is outside of our site outside of egg CMS outside of our domain, or they close their browser or they if they just viewed one page, they hit their back button and go back to a site or a page that doesn’t that isn’t on our our domain.

But that’s what a session is, so it’s the whole visit. It doesn’t matter if they go from barnes county extensions website and then click over to the food nutrition site and then click over to the plant site Department of Plant Sciences site. Those are all in our domain and they’re all in Ag CMS. So that would all be part of one session. But if they go to the Barnes County Extension site and then they go to food nutrition and then they click on something that takes them to the National Institute of Health or USDA, or something that at that point, they’re leaving our site in that session ends.

Okay, does that make sense questions about a session? Okay, so another main category or main metric is users pretty self-explanatory. Those are the people who have come to our site, haven’t had at least one session within the time period that we are seeking information for. So when you’re, looking at your, your Google Analytics, you define a date range show me analytics for the last year or the last month, or these ten days in the middle of 2014 or whatever it might be, and so that’s what you’re, when you’re looking at that Date range: it’s everybody who has had a session and we’ll get into this later, but you can sort of limit the scope of those sessions.

So when we’re looking at all users, that would be anybody. Who’s had who’s visited any page in ER, egged NDSU edu domain. As long as it exists on egg CMS, but there’s ways that you can filter that down and say only show me sessions where the users have visited a page on my site, for instance, okay, and so that’s what users are pretty easy concept. But if you have questions about that, let me let me know pageviews, so we have our users right in this in this graphic, its 87,000 plus users, and they among them have had 120,000 plus sessions for the time period that we’re looking at.

So that’s their sort of total visit experience that session, but within each session they might view multiple pages. So when you were looking at viewing on multiple pages, we refer to those as pageviews. So in those 120,000 sessions, the total number of page view pages that were viewed shouldn’t, say pages that were viewed but views of pages because some of them might be counted twice in there are 300 9250 to right.

Okay, so those are pageviews. Let me go back here, I’m going to talk about a couple other things that are pretty obvious on this slide here. So 120,000 sessions, 309 thousand page views. If you divide the number of page views by the number of sessions you get what’s in the bottom left there, the pages per session, so in an average visit, how many pages did a user view, and so in this measurement, which I don’t remember what this was Captured from it was 2.

5 six pages per session and then the other metric that you’ll see there in the bottom center is the average session duration. So how long did it take them? How much time they spend in that session and the average for this particular data set was two minutes and 27 seconds. Ok and then the last thing that you’ll see down there in the corner, there is the bounce rate. Bounce rate is pretty much unique to Google Analytics I’ve not seen it referenced in any other context other than in Google Analytics, but it’s a pretty interesting metric for web pages.

So, let’s, let’s take a look at balance right here, so it’s kind of a complicated formula and I’m not going to get into the bounce rate. But basically, what the bounce rate is is how many people came to a page and just view that one page and then left the the domain. So they only viewed one page and then they took off somewhere else. Ok, and so that is the bounce rate. So they might have left the site by you know, clicking a link to a different website, clicking the back button, closing their browser window typing in a new URL whatever, but they only looked at one page and then they were gone.

They scoot it. So here are some average bounce rates by industry. This is important because bounce rate can be interpreted a number of different ways in it and it’s one of the reasons why we say it’s important to know what you’re trying to accomplish with your website, because you can look at that number and go. Oh balance. Rate of sixty four point: five, six percent – that’s a lot – seems like a lot.

So that must not be a very good page. Well, it might be a really good page. It might be that the users are, you know, on google or another search engine, they’re searching for a particular particular solution. Why are the leaves dropping off my ash tree and they find your page and they click on it and they get their answer and then they’re, like all. I have my answer, so I’m going to go get out of here.

I’r going to close the browser. I’r going to you know, go to Facebook, whatever whatever it is, that they’re going to do so. That would produce a high bounce rate. If a lot of users are doing that, that’s a high bounce rate, but that might be okay for that page because of the purpose of the page. On the other hand, if you have a page that is a list of links to resources within your site, and so your intention is.

I want somebody to come to this page they’re, not really going to see anything here but they’re going to choose one of these links to click, and then you see that page has a high bounce rate that should concern you right assuming those links that they’re choosing From our internal links that they’re inside of your website or inside of our domain, that you can concern you, because then people are not clicking those links right if they have a high bounce rate they’re.

Looking at that page and going this isn’t for me – or this is boring, or this sucks or whatever and they’re they’re going somewhere else. So you can see our bounce rate for all egg CMS sites for basically the last year and you can compare that to some of the other, some of the other bounce rates by industry. Ok, questions about bounce rate. Alright, so I want to look at some of the metrics that you might use to detect engagement.

So some of the things like pageviews, they don’t mean a ton right. So you can look at your page views. I’r not sure what you would do with that yeah. You could put them in an impact report or or some other report that you need to prepare, but you know you could compare them to maybe last year or last month right well. Last month we had this. Many hits in this month we have this many heads, and so maybe that is some indication of growth, but it, but you have no idea, what’s happening on those pageviews right.

It could be somebody clicking that page and then immediately go on somewhere else. It could be that they’re spending ten minutes on it pouring over the information, so each of those pageviews obviously are it’s not the same. It’s going to be different for for the user and in that interaction and there’s no way to tell one from another, so they’re they’re of limited value, but some of these metrics might give us an some insight into some actual engagement.

So what I’m going to do is I’m going to go through and talk about each one of these and then I’ll share my screen and we’ll open up, google analytics and I’ll kind of show you what they look like in the reports and explore that a little Bit so new versus returning visitors, so how does Google tell who’s new and who’s returning? So most of these are tracked with a cookie. Cookie is a little piece of code.

That’s delivered usually to your web browser, and so it indicates to your web browser. Hey. You visited this page before and if you come back again, google analytics can check your browser and see well does that cookie exist and if you, if it does exist, then you are a returning user. The downside of using that that way of doing it is that Google is going to miss some returning users, especially those people who are visiting our sites from different devices.

So if I visit, I open google chrome and I go and visit your site and then, a day later, I open your site on my smartphone, i’m going to appear as new each time because that doesn’t carry over. So it has some some flaws. As all all this data does, or some caveats anyway, but that’s how they that’s how it’s tracked. The reason I bring this up is because visitors returning to your site might signal some engagement.

Some follow up some pattern of loyalty coming back, maybe looking for more information about something. So if you’re, looking at a given time range – let’s say the last year and you take a look at how many of how many people are new they’ve only visited your site or had one session within that time period as opposed to people who have come back. Multiple times you might be able to read some engagement into that right.

They came, they got some information, maybe they tried it. Maybe they tried a solution or and then came back to see if they can find more information about what was going on, or maybe they use that knowledge somehow and they want to build on that and see if there’s more information that they can get. So that’s where it might signal some engagement. This can also be useful for comparing new users and returning users.

As a group, you might be able to look at them and see some differences in terms of pages per visit or visit duration that might prompt some improvement in your web presence. Where you can say well, gee new new users are not really spending as much time as returning users. That might be logical, but it might also be a function of they might not know where to find things, so they may not be comfortable when they first visit.

Our site, so that’s another way that that can potentially be used. We’ll take a look at that report later questions about new versus returning who’s seen a Google Analytics report before I just want to apply in the chat cool. That was really just a question. Make sure that I was you’re still hearing me. It was getting getting kind of quiet so good. Well, so I hope I’m not covering territory that you’ve already been over, but what kind of run through some more of these engagement metrics here so another one to look at for detecting potential engagement is frequency is the frequency recency report and the name will become sort Of explanatory, because it really consists of two things: one is the count of sessions so for, given date range how often our users returning during that date range so the new versus returning will show you, oh you know, let’s say fifty one percent of our traffic in That date range were returning users, but it’s not going to show you how many times they returned right.

They could have returned once they could return 20 times in that date. Range. You don’t know, that’s where count of sessions comes in, so count of sessions will show you a breakdown of your users and based on how many sessions they had during that date range from one to twenty plus. There’s some ranges in there as well. It’s not you know, it doesn’t break it down, but 19 sessions 18 sessions. But I give you a general idea of how often are returning users coming back.

The recency part is how many days has it been since the last session, thus recency, how often our users coming back right. So, if you’re looking at a full year, are they coming back? You know sort of every seven days a week. Lee kind of thing: are they coming back monthly? Is it mostly, you know to count sessions where they were, they came once and then they came back three months later or six months later, nine months later, so you can kind of get a sense of how often people are coming back.

So you can see how either one of those numbers might be a signal of some engagement and and some site loyalty. So if you see you know for a given time period, let’s say we’re looking at six months or something like that and you see session counts. Hey there’s a thousand people that had a session count of five right. That might be something a little bit more meaningful to report or to look at then I had thirteen thousand pageviews agree or disagree.

Do you agree with that statement that count of sessions might might be a little bit more meaningful, yeah, okay, good, and then that may be. Similarly, with with days since last session, maybe a little less reportable engagement there and a little bit more just getting a sense of how users are using your site, how those returning users are coming back and are you keeping up with giving them new information? Based on that recency right, if you see people are coming back every seven days, but you’re only posting new content to your website monthly, then you might ask yourself like hey how long, how long will they keep it up? How long will they keep coming back? Every seven days, if they keep seeing the same exact thing: okay, alright, so another metric audience engagement, it says adding its engagement rate.

Google Analytics used to call it that now they just call it audience. Engagement and again here, Google Analytics uses two different metrics. The first one is session duration. So what that does is breaks down the number of of sessions of a particular length, starting with zero seconds. We can talk about that later, but 0 to 10 seconds 10 to 20 seconds on and on etc. So you can kind of see now. This is isn’t for a particular page, but for that session, how many people spent 10 seconds 20 seconds? You know two minutes, etc.

There’s a caveat with this one in terms of how it measured – and I I was telling sonia earlier today – I just found out about this today, as I was doing some additional research for this. The way that Google measures that session duration is that time sort of gets recorded within the session when a user goes from one page to another so because they have to move from one page to another. It doesn’t include.

It doesn’t include that the time spent on just one page. So if the session only had one page view in it, that time would not be considered, and the other thing to keep in mind is that it doesn’t usually include the time spent on the exit page and that’s because they’re not going to another page within our Domain, so Google can’t measure that right. So so we kind of take this one along with with another one of the metrics that we’re going to have coming up with a little bit of a grain of salt.

So it can skew particular directions, but but it can be helpful. You know when you’re sort of looking at the middle there in terms of this of the session duration, the other metric, that’s involved in audience. Engagement is page depth. So that’s just the number of pages. Viewed in a session, we looked earlier at pages per session as a metric. This is a little bit different because when we’re looking at pages per session, it’s an overall average – and here we look at page depth – it’s going to show us the the number of pages.

Viewed in a session and then the number of users who fall into that that slot right. So if we say five pages viewed per session, how many users viewed five pages per session? How many users viewed or how I should say how many sessions do we have we’re only five pages reviewed? How many did we have we’re ten pages reviewed? Ok, so again, these are a couple things that might signal engagement right, so the in terms of session duration.

We might be looking at that and saying hey if we’re looking at session duration of 30 seconds. We know that it was a little bit more involved than just you know, accidentally clicking on our site and going oh there’s nothing here for me and Lynne and then leaving same thing with a page depth right people are digging in a little bit. It might indicate a little bit more engagement, so time spent on page.

This is going to be have some similar issues to session duration. When we talk about time spent on page, this is the average time that a user spends on a specific page, ok or the average of the time users spend on each page per session. Just like the session duration caveat, it does not include these one page sessions or exit pages. So I’ll talk about how you might deal with that in terms of how much you trust the time spent on page, but it can tell you or can’t give you some insight into who you know what type of pages are people spending time on, and then you Might ask yourself you know: do I need more pages like that and maybe look at pages where there’s a low time spent on on page and as long as that’s not an exit page or a page? Where you expect a one-page session to happen, then you might ask: why do I have these pages right? Are they just barriers for people to get to the the content that they want if they have a very low time spent on page, ok, all right and then the last one? I mentioned this before pages per session.

We looked at that a little bit before similar to page depth, but we’re talking about an overall average here. The question tends to be: you know: can we judge that as engagement or is it just people bouncing around seeking information, maybe never really finding it? So again we have to there’s a couple of different ways to look at that pages per session. All right, I’m going to wrap up the last two slides before I switch, so I don’t have to switch back and forth between content to my, but we’ll do a little Google Analytics demo here in just a couple of minutes.

First, I want to share a couple things with you: Sarah Bachman, who is sort of my guru in all things: evaluation; she’s, the project lead for the military families learning network based in at Virginia Tech. She identifies these keys to evaluation like you’re, going to do any kind of evaluation, including evaluating your Google Analytics your website, you know knowing what your purpose is. You know what are you trying to accomplish with your website, knowing what your goals are, and you know we talked about that in terms of conversions in Google Analytics right.

What do you want people to do? I want people to fill out this form. I want people to subscribe to this newsletter. I want people to read this article, so understanding what your goals are being consistent with the metrics of measurement over time Google Analytics sort of does that for us. But when you start gathering your data, you know make making sure that you’re comparing apples to apples right you’re, not comparing pageviews two sessions or anything like that and that you’re looking at the same kinds of reports.

If you’re going to look at things over time and see if you’re achieving your goals or not and then using the data to learn and improve which goes back to that improvement idea, this is probably the more more pressing need. When we talk about looking at our google analytics and evaluate our websites is like, instead of just reporting the numbers, you know, how can we look at the data and improve our web presence so that we can better achieve our goals and and then maybe improve the Numbers in the in the process and that all takes time and effort like any evaluation, so it does take thinking about this, setting some goals and getting into the google analytics and really kind of looking at some things.

So let me go ahead and share my screen and I will show you, google analytics here, just take a second any questions or comments before as i’m taking some time to get my my desktop up here. Alright, that’s the wrong thing! One second here here we go all right. There we go so they’re already seeing that you should be seeing a big report. How visible is that only might need to? I can zoom in if, if you need me to, I still see your PowerPoint pub, what all right wonder why that is! Oh Stacey saw it probably until I stopped presenting all right.

Let’s try this again. How about now Millie? Are you seeing that yep, okay, good? So this is how Google Analytics looks when we send you reports when sony. I send. Your reports really looks something like this usually they’re in PDF format, so they can be kind of similar, but they look look basically similar. So i’m just going to go through each of the ones that we that we talked about each of the engagement metrics and look at some of that.

Then, if you guys have questions about what else and what other metrics we can, we can go through some of those as well. So this is the new versus returning visitor report, and so, if you look down towards the bottom in the table there, oh okay, so Ken saying he lost my voice while was loading – and I don’t I didn’t say anything too terribly important can other than can you See the can you see the screen so we’re looking at the new versus returning visitor report here, so I just picked randomly kami.

I swear, I didn’t know you’re going to be on, so I just randomly picked the plant sciences website to look at here and so, as we take a look at that, here’s the the new versus returning so 75,000 sessions – and this is looking at the last year – Jun, 1, 2015, 2, jun, 1, 2015. So they’ve had 75 sessions thousand sessions. You know plus pretty even right. 51 % of them are new visitors. 48.9. Are our returning visitors, so pretty even balance there.

But as we go through that, we can see some some differences. So if we, if you go over to the right in that table – and you see in under behavior here – we’ve got the bounce rate, so in this case the bounce rate for new visitors quite a bit higher than returning visitors. So that might be something that we might want to look at. Why is that maybe digg when we can dig into the metrics a little bit more to find some of that out and and see if we can figure out why that might be pages per session? 2.

52 for new visitors 3.83 for returning visitors so again a little bit of a discrepancy there. Maybe it’s something that we want to look at and the same thing with average session duration, a minute 52 seconds, average session duration for new visitors, much higher four minutes and 17 seconds for returning visitors. So to me, there’s there’s a couple things that might be happening or that we might be able to take away from that one.

Is that comparative thing right? How can we get those numbers higher for new visitors? You know, is there something that we can do with our web design, how we’re presenting things and then the other thing is. We might be able to really see some engagement here right and we might be able to draw some conclusions about. You know what, when we get people coming back, then they engage more right. They spend more time during their sessions.

They view more pages as returning visitors than they do as new visitors. Any questions about that or insights that you might have about that new versus returning kind of thing. Okay, so here’s the oops get my tab up here. So this is the the frequency and recency report. So this is the that second metric, that we talked about and it’s broken down in those two areas right now we’re looking at the count of sessions.

So these you see here the people who, in this time period so we’re looking at a whole year. Thirty-Eight thousand of those of so about half a little more than half of the of the sessions were one-off sessions right. They came once and at least as far as Google could track. They never came back during that year. Now they might have come back on a different device, they might have a you know, deleted their cookies off their browser and come back.

Remember cuz. That cookie is the one. Is the thing that tracks that new versus returning, but in general we can kind of say well, most of the traffic was 11 session during the year and then you can kind of go down: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and then 9 through 14, etc. And then the two hundred and more ones so the 201 plus and actually 101 plus Sonia – and I have kind of looked at that and tried to dig into that.

A little bit. As that seems like a lot of sessions to us in a year. And is that internal traffic, and so we have created some what are called segments before that filter, that traffic out and that’s something that we can do. We can work with you to do if you see something that you think is an anomaly and you, like you know what I’d like to look at these numbers. Without that anomaly, we can help you do that as well.

Okay, so that’s the count of sessions and then the other thing that we talked about in frequency recency is the days since the last session and that here you can see zero day since the last. So that’s basically people who came once and then never came back. So we can kind of ignore that zero, since it doesn’t really apply to one visit or one session during that date range. But then you can look at how many days between, and so you know we see a lot here in the one day between and quite a few in the 8 to 14 day between 15 to 30 day between, and so you can might might make some inferences About that and kind of looking at how frequently your returning visitors are coming back, okay, questions about that comments, alright, so this is the engagement report and we talked about that in terms of that session duration and all of the one-page sessions so sessions on which user Only visited one page are included in this zero to ten seconds, even if they spent ten minutes on that page right.

This is this: if you want to call it a flawed sort of the blind spot of the report, we talked about how, in in order for goop for Google, to be able to measure how long someone’s been on a particular page. They have to click another page inside the site in the domain, and so if they only visit one page, they might be spending a lot of time in there they’re going to fall into 0 to 10 seconds range, because Google can’t measure them.

But for those people who visited more than one page, you know we can kind of and and that’s another thing that we could do with the filtering is we could filter out those one-page sessions and then take a closer look at this and then see all right Of the people who we could actually measure how many seconds are they spending on the site? But again kid be. It could be an indication of engagement because they are spending time on the site and then the other part of that engagement report is the page depth.

How many pages are they viewing within each session, so little it’s different than the average pages per session, because you’re actually seeing you know 41,000 of those sessions just viewed one page 10,000 views to page and so on the less than one here. Those numbers are usually caused by computer visits that Google couldn’t filter out, so it might be a web crawler like the search engines like I talked about or some other kind of automated computerized visit that doesn’t have a human being behind it, and so sometimes google doesn’t Get all of those out, but they do show up as less than one page depth, because the full page hadn’t been loaded.

So that’s page depth thing kind of get an idea of how many pages are being viewed in each session. All right, I need to move this just a little bit here and because it, my tabs, are behind this thing. Let’s get rid of that, okay, so the next metric that we’re looking at here. What metric are we looking at here? Okay, so we’re looking at time time spent on page or average time on page, and so what I’m looking at here is called the all pages report.

It looks at all the pages that were that were visited in that time range for those sessions and breaks them down that way, and this is where you could find the average time on page for that entire for all the sessions, and here it’s a minute and 24 seconds or you can drill down and see the average time on page for each page. So you see this Dakota pinnacle page average time on page is five minutes 38 seconds.

Remember this. This number came with that caveat that again, Google can’t measure time until someone clicks another page, and it also. They also can’t measure the time on exit pages, so take this average. This time, on page thing, with a with a little bit of a grain of salt, especially if you look over in the right of this column, and you see that percent exit, if that percent exit is pretty high.

All of those visits all of those page views that were exits where people left their session after viewing that page the time spent on that page didn’t count right. So if we look at this, this lecture implant sciences a lecture for a course, you can see that one here it’s line seven. It’s got three minutes and 24 seconds as time spent on page and we might think. Oh, that’s pretty good but higher than the average for this for this report, but it’s got a sixty-nine percent exit rate, so it’s probably even higher than that, because those exits those that time that those people spent did not figure into that same thing with Dakota pinnacle Looks like something that people are spending a lot of time on, because we’ve got a five minute: 38, second time on page and an eighty-six percent exit.

So so a lot of a lot of uncounted time there so kind of take that keep that in mind when you’re looking at that time spent on page all right, they got one more here that I need to get to right. We talked a little bit about pages per session and session duration, and this shows up on this audience overview report for the entire session. Our average pages per session here 3.16 in our average session duration, three minutes and three seconds again with that same caveat for time spent on page.

So those are some of the places that you might look if you’re trying to detect engagement. There’s other metrics in here that can definitely help you and or that might just be interesting. I didn’t mean to make that sound like a bad thing, sometimes interesting as interesting and and sometimes it’s even worth reporting or sharing so um. Any questions at all about Google Analytics. Are there certain things that you’d like to talk about or have me show you so Sonia saying some low bounce rates on the on the previous page? Let me take a look at that again: yeah those are pretty low.

Bounce rates so again that what that’s telling you is that these these pages are not just one and done pages, they’re part of a series of pages that are being viewed in the session when we see the one, that’s that the Dakota pinnacle page here. That’s eighty-seven percent. That’s going to indicate a lot of people came directly that page right. Either they were emailed the link or over they found it through search or whatever they viewed that one page and then boom they were.

They were out of there off the session. On to a different site, other questions things you want to know what other kinds of things are you interested in when you’re you’re like asking for reports or if you haven’t asked for a report, yet you know just what you’re curious about in your website. Nothing else. Okay, well just reiterate a couple things right: if you want reports, just let Sonia or me know, we can set up those automated reports.

If you want to get a monthly report, you can even get a weekly report or daily report if you want and those seem to have been working okay and then, if you want access to this, you want to poke around to this. You know, like I said it would just need a non NDSU. Google account for you. We could share access to to google analytics. There’s nothing in here that you can break right. You can’t, you know, take down the website or mess things up.

This is when you’re in Google Analytics and logged in, as you is sort of your dashboard, your personal view of how you want to look at things so you’re welcome to to poke around in there any time, so don’t be afraid to ask for that access. $10K A month Email Marketing Secrets For Shopify Part 1 – The Strategy

So for those of you that don’t know what email marketing is basically is when you collected email and start marketing products to it, that’s essentially the the basics of it and it accounts for about 30 %, maybe even 35 % on on the higher months of my Business sales, so, if you’re not taking advantage of this, you definitely should be taking advantage of it, and I’m going to show you how right now, if you haven’t already go ahead and hit that subscribe button, because we’re about to drop some dope content that you guys Are going to get tons of value out of and if you’re not subscribed, you’re going to start missing out on the you know the articles we do in the future.

So definitely do that and yeah, let’s jump in so email marketing, there’s, basically three different types of email, marketing that I can kind of or that I use at least there are other types like subcategories of these, but these are the three main ones that I use. So the first one is called abandoned, cart, so I’m sure tons of you guys have heard about abandoned cart, emails and email series, there’s bunches of different softwares that send them out automate automatically we’ll go over how to set all these up in a future article, and You know one of the next parts, but abandoned cart is essentially when somebody adds something to their cart, but they don’t actually purchase it, but you still have their email, so you can start emailing them later.

Okay, so we’ll go over the strategy here. The next one is newsletter: okay, newsletter are people that sign up to your newsletter or sign up for a discount or something like that. They are basically your general base level subscribers that haven’t shown necessarily any interest in purchasing, but they are at least interested enough to start receiving marketing emails from you, so these would be considered cold leads, these would be considered warm leads and then I’ll show you another One, the other category, which is considered a hot lead, which means that they’re very likely to purchase – and that is your customer list.

Okay, so these are the three different types of email that you can go into and there’s a little bit different strategy that you should approach when it comes to these different different groups of people. So, like I said this, one is definitely the brings me the most profit and the most income is the new customer list, a customer list in general, then next to that, would probably be this one, and then this one so and the only reason is because these People have bought some things, so they’re more likely to buy stuff.

You know in the future because they’ve already purchased. So that being said, let’s go into the strategy on how you should actually go about doing these. So if we’re abandoned cart, I basically set up for emails. So I’ll just do one two three and four: hopefully you can see all these. I think you can so yeah so for you now some people will do three. I just like doing four. I think it makes kind of more sense, but you know you can do whatever, but the first email is.

It’s just going to be a reminder: email, okay, so you’re, basically just going to remind the person, the customer that they have something in their car that they can go check out, just making sure that they didn’t get distracted. Maybe they had to take the dog out. You know whatever it is just send them a reminder that there’s still stuff in their cart that they can go purchase, and I usually send this after about four hours.

Four hours, okay, usually send that about after four hours, I’ve tested with two hours tested with 60 minutes tested with six hours. For me, this one works the best, but you know I would recommend testing it out and seeing okay number two is going to be a reminder: email, okay, but we’re going to add urgency. So what I mean by this is that you’re going to remind the customer, hey, you got something in your cart but we’re going to add urgency by saying: hey, listen, you know this deal or we’re only going to save your cart for the next 12 hours in The next 24 hours, whatever you want to make it.

So if you you know, if you wait longer than that, then your cart will expire and you won’t get the deal which usually, when I’m running you know different. Usually, when I’m at running advertisements to things I run deals so I’ll do like a 25 % off 50 % off whatever it is, so people understand that they’re getting a deal. So if I say that you know your car’s going to expire, you might lose the deal then they might be more likely to buy okay.

So I usually do this after a whole day, then the third email is going to be a coupon of some sort and it could be a coupon incentive. Maybe buy one get one free whatever you want to make it to get people to to be more incentivize to purchase. You can do whatever you want here, but the reason I don’t do it on the second or first email is because I don’t want to just like come out swinging and give people money off.

That probably would have purchased anyways with these two emails here. I would rather go through these to have everybody buy from these. That was going to and then come in with the coupon later say yeah. So the coupon, like I said, could be anything then the last one is a coupon plus urgency. Okay, oh wait! I didn’t put okay, so the coupon. I usually do after day two and then this one I do after day three.

So it’s just like you know. One day in between, but the coupon flex urgency. Essentially what that is. Is you know you give them the coupon, so say it’s 50 % off you give them that coupon. But you say hey. It only lasts for the next 12 hours so go ahead and purchase. Now so you can redeem the coupon something like that, because this will make people more incentivized to go actually make the purchase.

So these are the four emails that I use. I will I actually do have sort of templates that I use that you can build off of, or you can use for yourself that I’ve linked down in the description below. So, if you do want to check those out, you can check them out. I probably will make templates for all these different ones that you can go ahead and check out if you so desire. But that being said go ahead and screenshot this, because I’m about to erase it so three two one.

So that was abandoned. Cart now we’re going to go into newsletter and customer emails which are kind of similar. I treat them sort of similar, but there are a few key differences that I’ll talk about. So I like to think of it as a time line. So I’m just going to draw out a will time line here so well and you could do it for any amount of time. I usually do it for two weeks. You could do it for three weeks.

You could do it for a month. You could do it for six months, like some people have six month. Email list doesn’t really matter in the beginning. Just get something going so I’d recommend like the two weeks. It would probably be good. So let’s say this is day zero. So this is the day that they signed up. We consider that day, zero in day 14, so this after two weeks of them being on your email list and the entire goal here, if they’re on the newsletter, is obviously to get them to buy something if they’re a new customer.

Obviously, you know keep retaining them as a customer and buy more stuff so day 0 we’re going to do okay, so Daisy our we’re going to do the welcome and incentive. So what do I mean by this if you’re on a newsletter? Basically, we’re going to say welcome to the newsletter here’s what you can expect, here’s, how often we email you. You know what kind of information that you can get you want. You want to establish right out the gate.

What kind of value they’re going to be getting from being on your newsletter, but most importantly, is if they’re on your newsletter is you have to give them the incentive that they signed up for so most the time when you have a newsletter, people are signing up For either a coupon, maybe a free ebook, maybe some sort of free item giveaway percentage off whatever it might be, that you’re giving them to sign up to your newsletter.

You want to make sure that you give them that incentive right off the bat, because that’s why they signed up in the first place right so for the newsletter definitely makes sure that that’s the case for the new customers you’re going to welcome to them. Tell them how long shipping time takes how they can contact you when I was how they can track their package stuff like that, and I’m also in the new customer email going to give them another incentive, which would be maybe like 20 % off your next purchase.

Something like that and honestly guys like I said this is my most profitable by far campaign, so many people buy from that new customer email that I give them like 20 % off. So definitely a good thing to do, and I leave a that link. I’ll have a template, email for that weather. You can check out so welcome inside then after I went to wait a day so day. Two. Let me actually spread this out a little bit so okay day, two, I’m going to give them some sort of value.

Okay, so what do I mean by that? So, let’s say we’re in like with fishing niche. What kind of value would those people be looking for? What kind of information would they be searching for? I think they might be interested in, like you know, top 10 fishing, lures or catfishing, or maybe something like the best new fishing boat or the best time to catch. A certain kind of you know the best techniques to use things like that.

You want to include either blog articles to other blogs, or preferably you’d like to send them back to your website, so you can actually start a blog on your own website and just do like top 10 tips top seven tips. Those are like really really good, both for quick thing and, for you know, people like list of things, so I would give them value they’re also on day four. I would give them value now. I’r going to show you guys how to set all this up in future articles.

So we can yeah, you know so don’t worry, but so two values in a row. Then we’re going to do this, we’re going to on day six we’re going to do a pitch. Let me write that so 100 me back pitch, basically you’re going to sell them, something that is some people call it a tripwire. Some people call it like a bait product, but essentially what you’re going to do is is pitch something. That’s sort of low cost so like seven to fifteen dollars, preferably under ten, actually does best.

In my experience, but you know something: that’s a little bit cheaper that somebody can be like out of seven bucks, all right, I’ll drop, seven bucks like no big deal and then, if you haven’t already seen the upsell article I’ll link it somewhere on here. So you can go ahead and check out the you know how to actually upsell people and make money off of that. So if you haven’t checked that out, definitely read it so we’re going to pitch them they’re on some sort of trip wire product and then on day seven.

So I’m not going to wait a day here, I’m just going to go straight to day seven we’re going to do a pitch we’re going to do a pitch plus urgency. So, just like with the abandoned cart emails, we’re going to say, hey this offer only last. You know the 50 % offer the you know. Usually I like to make this some sort of some sort of deal, but the pitch or the offer only lasts for the next 12 hours, the next 24 hours, whatever you want to make it so we’re going to add urgency and hopefully get people to buy if They don’t that’s fine.

We still have more. You know things that are in our newsletter, so I’ll wait another day we’ll go day, nine we’re going to give them more value. Okay, so another value piece preferably make it on your own blog, maybe funny meme, something like that. You know because the reason why is because we just pitched them twice right, so we want to make sure that we’re not constantly pitching we’re actually providing value in this email list as well, so we’re going to give them value there, then, on day 11, we’re again Going to give them value on day 11, then day 13 we’re going to do another pitch.

So it’s going to be a different product. You could either do something a little bit higher tier, maybe in the 20 to 30 dollar range, or you could stick with something in this tier. It really just depends on what you want to do. It’s you know, you might get better results with the the smaller price, but you know you can try out both do whatever you want, we’re going to pitch and that day 14 again we’re going to continue here and we’re going to do pitch plus urgency.

So this is actually how I would set up a two week, new customer or newsletter type of feel, and obviously you can just continue on with the process. You can switch it up a little bit if you want to. You know do whatever works best for you, but this is kind of the layout that I used myself and, like I said it accounts for about 30 % of of the revenue that I actually made from my store. Writing and Addressing Envelopes With Your Cricut

In today’s article, we’re going to teach you guys exactly how to address your very own envelopes, it’s a very highly requested article. I get emails about this comments all the time, so we’re going to use our Cricut today and Cricut pins to be able to write on our envelopes the return address and the address we’re sending our envelope to so it’s going to be a lot of fun.

You can use your maker any of the Explorers, have the pin slot so therefore you’re able to take advantage of that as well, and it’s the same process for either machine. So hope you guys are excited and let’s jump into it. So I like to start with how it looks when it’s finished, and this is a big step of the process. So what we like to do is have three different layers going. You want to have your rectangle to the shape of your envelope.

For us, this is about a five by seven envelope, so we just created a rectangle five by seven and put it as our background. Next, you want to have the return address and we’ll teach you exactly how to format that text, and then we centered this text right here now we’re using fonts from our membership site makers going to learn calm. This is our Gracie Lou font. I think it’s perfect for using pins, and I love the quirkiness of this font alright to get started.

Let’s go ahead and zoom out and have some more space right here on our iPad. Now remember you can follow along with this project, whether you’re using an iPad. Your iPhone or your desktop or laptop so let’s go to shapes and insert a square. We’re going to take this square right over here and we’re going to select edit we’re going to make the width 7 and the height 5, just like. So once we’ve been able to do that, we’re going to go ahead and just change the color of the envelope to white by selecting the layer just making it white.

As you can see here all right next we’re going to select text and we’re going to select from our system font Gracie Lou if you’re a member to makers going to learn, you’re going to be able to get access to that font for free if you’re a Year, member so be sure to have your your membership to get access to our font library, with hundreds of fonts to choose from anyway. Now we’re going to type out we’ll start with the return address like we have here.

So I’m just go top into my name and then an address of your choice. I just keep making up random ones as we’ve been planning out this article. So, as you can see here, we’re just typing in whatever we’d like your address, and you can see here a few things now. First compared to our finished one right here, the line spacing totally different. This one is actually centered and we need to align it to the left.

So, let’s start by doing that, we’re going to add it and we’re going to select line space now be sure to work with different line spacings for different fonts. They all require different things. Now, next again, this is still centered, so we want to go and select alignment and we want to align text left. Look at how easy that was so now pretend this is your envelope, so you just want to start sizing this down.

Let’s lock that and we can position it right up here, so that’s our return address and then what we’re going to do now is we’re going to get our app another text box under text. You select a Gracie Lou and we’re going to type in whoever we’re sending a message to a little letter, I’m going to send it to cor so we’re going to type in or address so now we type that in and again it’s already aligned for the left.

So we just need to select edit and we need to align Center first and then we’re going to select line space and bring that down too. Then we can saws that down. Some maybe thought this one leave that here and saws this one down a little bit more and move that up just a tad. Sometimes you will want to turn off if you’re, using an iPad smart guides. So it’s easier to position exactly how you want it.

Smart guides kind of snaps things into place and you usually do not want that all right. So we have this right here. This looks pretty good. I love when I’m filming articles giving the example first and then recreating it for you guys, so you can see why we’re doing different things. So this one looks fun, we’re going to lead it and just go back to the one we were working with. What we’re going to do now at this step, if you notice, we press make it, it is going to go ahead and put this on a two totally different mats and it’s going to look very different than as it looks on our canvas.

How we need to make this stay together is first, we don’t need this back this white rectangle at the back anymore. This was just for reference on our map, we’re going to select the X and delete, and now we have this right here. So we’re going to just be able to select that and we’re going to click actions and select. Attach one big note is that you need to in the layers panel change from cut. You need to change that to draw so, instead of cut we’re going to select right and you want to select the pin you’re using now today, we’re using the gel pen 1.

0 black. It tells you right here on the pin, so let’s just scroll through and find that pin and then we’re going to repeat that to our Tanner text, so right and 1.04, the 1.01 here and now we’re good to go. It’s ready and we’re going to be able to press make it we’re going to select, replace – and it’s already formatted right here on our mat. So now we’re able to take one of our envelopes and we’re just going to place it down on our mat right up.

In the top left-hand corner – just like so so you can see here we have our envelope we’re going to move our little gods back. We were filming a knife blade article, so that was fun, but we need our well guides back. We’re going to load that into the machine and now that’s ready to go. We can press continue, we’re going to connect via bluetooth. So now we’re going to take our pin open it. A great tip for this is to take this cap and go ahead and put it on the top of your pin.

Do not leave it on your craft table, maan gets a little messy and you will lose it. It’s a great reminder for, when you’re finished, to take it out and put this lid right back on so now what we want to do is just simply open, clamp a and it’s honestly, this simple you’ll find there’s a little triangle. You just want to take this and pop it into place. Once you hear that click, you know, you’re good, to go, you’re going to close clamp, a it’s very simple, a lot easier than clamp B.

I do have to say, and then you’re ready to go for us we’re going to select that this is light cardstock for the envelope and then we’re going to turn fast mode on just so it you know and right for us, you don’t have to and another Great tip is that if you do not want to go through the referencing process and you’re using an iOS device, feel free to use snap mat to put multiple envelopes on your mat and be able to align your return and sending addresses manually.

That way, it’s a great addition and we’ll try to link our snap in that article down below, for you guys to check out and learn how that works. It’s super fun so once you’re good to go, we’ll press the flashing Cricket button and it’ll start our drawing all right guys the drawing has completed it. Lets us know on our iPad and then the flashing unload button is happening. So we just want to press that and look at how beautiful this turned out.

I love love, love. The look of this guy is such a professional look and it’s amazing, so you’re going to be able to do this. One tip I do have is when you’re taking it off the mat, don’t just pull it up, cuz. It then could curl flip it over and just let it peel off the mat itself and maybe even use a light grip mat umm. If you want to as well, I think they both work great. As you can see here, the standard grip mat worked wonderfully and we used two different pins here, but it honestly turned out beautiful.

Trusted Web Activities

We know that there are some use cases where it makes sense to integrate your existing web experience into your native app, I’m Pete a developer advocate on the web team at Google. Let’s take a look at how you can do this today and what we’re doing to make your web development experience better today, you can do this either using a webview or a custom tab.

Well, each of these has their own benefits. They’re also drawbacks to each with web views. The content runs fullscreen and supports many of the PWA features. It has the ability to use post message to send messages back and forth between the webview and your native code, which makes it possible to invoke certain native functionality that isn’t available on the web. On a flip side, web views our sandbox completely from the user.

They don’t share the same cookie, store or storage and they don’t have access to the users, safe passwords and so on. The other challenge that comes up is that web views may be out of date. Web views on devices running pre, lollipop, aren’t updatable custom tabs also support content in full-screen mode and because they’re powered by the user’s default browser they share cookies, storage, passwords and more.

It’s always up-to-date and supports the full gamut of capabilities required for progressive web apps. But there is that name and address bar across the top. The user knows that they’re looking at web content, which isn’t always what you want. We’ve heard from you that you want an easier way to launch full-screen web content from a native app, but do it using the users preferred browser at the chrome dev summit.

Last year we announced a new type of activity that Android developers can use to embed trusted. First party web content trusted web activities provide a new way to integrate parts of your web experience into your native Android, app they’re powered by custom tabs, which means the content is rendered by the users up-to-date browser instead of an out-of-date webview. It shares the same cookies and storage within the browser.

It has access to AP ice that aren’t available in web views. This isn’t designed as a mechanism to simply wrap your site and dump it in the Play Store. A simple mistake can cause some drastic problems. For example, the user installs your app from the store hops on a plane and launches your app. The user is going to see the dinosaur because the app hasn’t installed the serviceworker yet trusted web activities are designed to make it possible for you to use the investment that you’ve made in your progressive web.

App within your Android, app, similar to chrome, custom, tabs trusted web activities run full screen. Each activity of your app is either completely provided by the web or an Android activity. There’s no way to combine them. For example, you can’t use Android components for navigation and content, rendering via the trusted web activity. Transitions between web and native content are between activities trusted web activities do have some constraints, you can’t just show any content, it must be yours, and you must be able to prove that it’s yours by adding a set of digital asset links, you must include an intent Filter for the opened URL in your Android manifest your app must pass the chrome, PWA install ability, checks which includes being served over HTTPS, registering a serviceworker and including a manifest and very important.

Your app must still meet all of the normal Play Store guidelines. Let’s take a look at what’s involved in adding a trusted web activity to your Android app. There are essentially two steps that we need to complete to embed or progressive web app in our Android app. First, we need to add a set of digital asset links. These links establish a relationship between our web content and the trusted web activity.

By establishing this relationship, our android app can verify that the content is served is ours and meets that first party requirement. Then we can add the activity to our Android app and show our web content and our manifest file. We need to tell it about an asset statement by adding this metadata attribute. Next, we need to update the strings.Xml file and our Android app and tell it about our web content where it lives and give it the permission that it needs oh yeah and all those quotes there.

Sorry they do need to be escaped like that. Now we need to create and deploy the assets link JSON file, using key tool on the certificate that we use to sign our Android app, we’ll get the sha-256 hash so that later Android can verify the certificate and that hash, then, in the asset, links JSON file. Will include that hash, our package name and a few other boilerplate pieces and deploy it to the dot well-known directory.

The file makes it possible for Android to verify the relationship between what’s being served and our Android app. We’ve set up the digital asset links we need now. We can create the activity. There’s a bunch of boilerplate code required to launch the activity that I’ve kind of glossed over here, but we’re working on adding that to the Android support library, so that you won’t have to deal with it in the future.

Once the boiler stuff is complete, you can create the new intent set, the URL and open the web content in your trusted web activity. Today, this is available on android and chrome 68, which is currently chrome, dev and we hope to see it land and stable sometime in q3 of 2018 to learn more check out gqo slash trusted web activities. There’s a great post there with everything you need to know to get started and a sample that you can use to try it yourself.

Connect Google My Business Account to: Search Console, Youtube Channel & Google Analytics

Specifically, you know all the tools that you have available to you. Google Analytics Google search console what else your YouTube blog, etc to your Google, my business page, because, really that Google, my business page, is kind of like your central hub as a local business, not just kind of as it is, and so, when you connect, if you Just think about it from from Google’s standpoint: okay, there’s in the beginning, you know seven eight years ago there are a lot of businesses that were just claiming or setting up Google my business pages and they weren’t.

Really they weren’t verifying them. They weren’t. You know really, it wasn’t really their address, you know and they weren’t really engaged on the platform, and the same thing applies to Yelp and for that matter pretty much any platform that you’re trying to optimize, for is, if you, if you don’t create content for it And if you don’t use the tool that they give, you then they’re just not going to give you the results that you want and I can’t think of any better or bigger tool for a local business based on results.

Right crystal I mean we’ve, we’ve seen you know, Steven Rosenberg and and guys like him, significantly benefit from spending a little time. Utilizing these tools connecting these tools together, doing building their foundation. So to speak, which is, in my opinion, is doing this kind of stuff for local SEO and eventually what we’re talking about is local search, engine, optimization and so obviously getting more reviews – and you know specifically as it pertains to the Google platform you know it like.

I said it doesn’t get any bigger than Google my business, because that is what it’s going to allow you to show up on. The maps literally show up on the map, and when you connect these these tools that Google gives you access to analytics the YouTube blog. That you’re, using for your your you, know your business to create content. Your Google search console. These are tools that, and why not take advantage of anyway, and what you can do is and the thing and like I said, if you think about it from Google’s standpoint, just think about it.

For a second, I mean if, if Google sees that you’ve taken the time to set up a Google Analytics account a YouTube blog and a Google search, console account and connect, and maybe even an AdWords account. So you connect all those accounts. There’s many more accounts at Google. Hats I mean: there’s you can set up there’s so many different tools that Google gives you access to and if you you connect that Google, my business page you can, by the way you can connect and, let’s just say the, how so here’s how you can specifically Connect the Google my business page directly to these tools right in the Google, my business platform.

If you go to your Google, my business page you’ll, see that you know it asks you. It says you want to connect. You know, connect this to your Google Analytics account. Do you want to connect your Google, my business account to your AdWords account you know, etc. And/Or to your YouTube account now. I will say that you know they are making it so that you can create articles right in your Google, my business page, so it’s easier, but man it does not take long to set up a Google Analytics account.

It does not take long to set up a you know, an AdWords account or a Google search console account and connect your website to it, and if you do, Google sees that it’s and what you also will probably want to do. What I suggest that you do is you use the same email address. Google account Google Gmail account to set up all these same accounts so that Google sees that there’s a common thread that there is a you know that there’s that there’s a common thread between the setting up of all of these accounts – and you know so – you can Have a owner and an admin account on your Google, my business page, and so I would associate the owner account to the email address that you’re going to use to set up all of these other Google platforms and and, and you know, like search, console, YouTube, etc.

You can call them platforms, you can call them accounts whatever you want to call them, but bottom line is use these tools, platforms that Google provide you and my suggestion is – is like I said it’s just use the same Gmail or you know. Google email account that you use to set up your Google, my business page or to own your Google. My business page they’re basically set up these other these other platforms that Google Offers you there anything else that you guys.

It makes sense that I find it very interesting that just these small basic little simple things of just setting up this, and that makes such a difference, and in that you know you can tie it all together somehow, and so your rankings improved that way, and I Just find it so interesting that things so basic that you would, or I would naturally just pass over and think it wasn’t that big of a deal whether I signed up or not would make that that ranking increase.

Well, it does because you know good again, if you think of it from Google’s standpoint, I mean what they want to know. Is they want to know that you’re an engaged? It’s like we like to have engagement with people that come to our website. You know with chat: okay, yeah, Google’s measure of engagement and your your engagement with their tools. The only way they can really measure that is to see if you’re setting up these accounts, if you’re, using these different platforms that they offer and why not I mean, for goodness sakes, Google Analytics is the gold standard really for for analytics out there for measuring and Quantifying the visitors to your site, the unique visitors, the the bounce rate for your website, and you want to keep track of all these things, because when you do what we’ve always said, this many times crystal what you pay attention to improve and improve.

If you pay attention to it and you identify what your goal is and where you’re at now, if you don’t know where you’re at now, it’s tough for you that you can’t set a goal for where you want to go and if you’re not paying attention to It and making it a part of your normal activities that you’re doing then it’s just there’s just no way for it to improve. It’s just not going to happen. So when Google sees that you’re using these tools – and it sees that you’re that and you’re actually paying attention to your bounce rate and you’re trying to improve your bounce rate on your website, that’s going to help your search engine optimization! Because and that’s what Google wants.

Google wants to see that speaking of engagement, that you’re getting engagement on your website and that people are staying there and that they’re scrolling down like we’ve, talked about in in articles past yeah. You know they’re scrolling down, you know from the top of the bottom they’re, not just you know bouncing. You know which bounced is when somebody goes to your website and they immediately bounce right off.

They just blink. They just go right to somewhere else, because they see that it has nothing to do. You know, there’s no value there and that’s not what Google wants to create the best experience possible. They have. It wants to serve up the best content possible that people are going to find engaging and the only way they can quantify. That is to see if people are actually engaging with your website and how do they quantify that by connecting Google Analytics to your website? So it would only make sense because look you’re going to pay attention to it and they’re going to see as well they’re going to be able to see when they have analytics on your site.

They’ll be able to see more data and and quantify and see if people are have a great experience and, more importantly, though, you can affect those numbers are well as well, because you can finally start paying attention to them. And, and do things like add chat to your website so that you increase the time on site, okay and which is another big parameter that you want to pick that you pay attention to what analytics, if you have analytics connected to your website? And if you have like the Google search console connected to your website, why would you want to do that? Well, because you get amazing additional insight into the visitors to each page and how long they’re staying there and what pages are getting the most are getting the most hits and same with analytics.

We can get all this in analytics too, but Google search console, I think, used to be called Google Webmaster Tools, and it just gives you additional insight into what’s going on on your website and and then, of course, a YouTube blog. I mean it just goes without saying I mean if you could, you know you want to create content as much as possible, and that’s just another way for Google to see that you are, you know, look if you’re creating valuable YouTube content and especially if you take That YouTube content and you do what we do, which is to embed those articles on your website.

That’s going to increase the time on site, it’s going to decrease the bounce rate. That’s proven stats show it all the time and you can see how it’s like a snowball effect. You know you start using these tools that Google provides whether it’s YouTube blog Google search, console, analytics, etc and you’re going to start your you’re going to create a better experience, which is what Google wants and what you want, as well.

For the people that visit your site and you’re going to be able to measure and see, what’s going on with the analytics and Webmaster, you know a search console, and so it just it only makes sense. Not that is primarily just why Google wants you to connect your Google, my business page to the other platforms, because they know that it’s going to create a better experience for the people that actually go to your site and get with your content.

And – and it’s just going to create a better experience that makes sense and to you know in our safari when I would go, and I would ask you the top three questions that would show up for local SEO. I found it rather interesting that they one of the top question questions is: do I have to keep track of analytics like it was a nuisance and – and I would think why not, why wouldn’t you you know from what we know, but I really tried hard to Understand from a new business, or you know, standpoint or a new Google, my business page standpoint as far as why you wouldn’t think that’s valuable, but I can come up with anything yeah.

I find it so interesting that that was one of the top questions. What, in other words, why would you want to keep yeah it was? Do I have to keep track of AnnaLynne it yeah yeah? Well, it’s really saying the same thing is yeah. Why why do I have to do I have to, and – and yes I mean it man only only if you want to get more inbound phone calls, then only only if you want to increase your business, I mean that’s.

You know that. That’s all! That’s the only reasons I yeah and then yesterday you know we had talked about playing the guessing game. That’s kind of what happens when you don’t pay attention to stuff like this or the analytics. You end up playing ping playing the guessing game and wasting time and getting frustrated, and you know spending money on stuff that doesn’t need to be spent on absolutely and and – and you know, and we’re we’re going through a revamp of our site right now, because we’ve Actually been paying attention to the analytics and the the numbers, the the simple numbers, which is, you know not just prime on site and bounce rate etc, and what pages are being visited the most? But you know what results are we getting in terms of actual leads or conversations that are being started? That’s our big! You know our big parameter that work attention to now and we have seen a huge market increase.

You know we just you know a huge increase in time on site decrease significantly in the bounce rate from our website, and this huge increase in the number of leads like double so far and what’s really fun is, is looking at these data and finding and creating And identifying and tweaking your what you’re doing on the website so that you can improve these numbers and so that you can have you know and what it really comes down to.

So you can have more engaging conversation, people and etc. You know from your website, but and what it does it’s. Actually, it’s really fun, because when you know when we tweak one thing, we see the effect that it has on the bounce rate and and other you know, parameters and when you, when we add article, for example, to the website of the homepage. We see how that affects things, and we you I mean it’s immediate.

I mean it literally. You know when you change these things, I mean the impact can be very, very dramatic and and you’ll see. Google will reward you when you get a decrease in bounce rate and an increase in time on site you’ll see that all of a sudden you’ll just start showing up more in search and what I call it. The silent killer, because you don’t know that the! How good it can be until you actually experience how good it can be, and so you just go along.

You know just like with you know local SEO or not doing it. You just go along or like this person that asked you know. Why would I want to pay attention outside? Well the reason the reason why they’re asking that question is because they don’t even understand, don’t know what they don’t know. Yes, you know they don’t know that. Okay, you know, if I actually did this and this is low and what most people say like when they add when people add chat to their website.

You know so they can start conversations. I mean I hear it over and over and over again and people start doing and paying attention to local SEO and getting reviews they’re like man. Why did I do that? Why didn’t we do this sooner and and why didn’t we pay attention as before and the reason? Why is because they just didn’t know that it could be this good if they actually just pay attention to these things and and yes not, and we’re guilty that yeah yeah I mean even from the live article that you did with Steve Rosenberg yesterday and talking about Consistency I mean that plays a huge role in paying attention to your insights and staying consistent and then the other thing when we talked with Jason property management company yesterday as well, he talked about how.

Well maybe this isn’t a question that you should be asking. You should be asking this question instead of kind of looking at it in a different perspective of what are they really trying to ask? Rather than do I have to keep track of my insights. Well, so yeah, and so what we like to talk about is the should ask questions, not the not the not the frequently asked questions. Those are the question that everybody asks.

Ok, but they asked those they ask those questions from a place of they don’t know what they they don’t know and whereas, if they, if they knew what they didn’t know, they would be asking a different question and because Jason is an expert in what he does. This is why we create content with him so that he can highlight and and pose the questions that people should be asking, but they don’t know to ask those questions because they don’t know what he knows yeah and that’s what makes an expert an expert.

And that’s that’s what that’s where value is derived from? That’s where the most value is derived from, because those are the questions that can take somebody from give somebody a quantum leap from where they’re at currently to where they can can be once they understand. I did notice too that Google, my business, just sent an email out that they are going to start incorporating notifications to your email. Once you receive a review on your Google, my business page and so they’re kind of tweaking that a little bit more to where you can reply back specific from that email instead of signing in to the Google my business page, you can just reply back to the Review from your from the email notification wow, I didn’t okay, that’s that that’s really cool! I mean basically, what they’re trying to do is they’re just making it as easy as possible for people to respond and and and to engage, because you know that has been a big challenge for us over the years to get our business owners to just respond.

Those reviews we talked about that yeah yeah just time. You know, I mean that way. It just makes it easier. I mean we make it super easy because you can actually, with with the system that we use, you can actually even just text. You know in the responses and so yeah not really No yeah but yeah, but I also think you know take that as a sign Google is saying, reviews are important, you know sign, but we’ll continue on this conversation.

MDi TV – 5 consideration before you start your email marketing campaign

So the first thing to consider is if your audience, who are you actually trying to get this email to what kind of messages will be within the email for that particular audience, so you may just want to focus on new customers. You know clients that you’ve acquired in the last 12 months. You may want to introduce email as a way of communicating with these new customers and make them aware of other products that you do so.

Customers will not aware of products ex-wife and said somebody who’s bought, for example, or specified a particular product. And how can you then communicate with them that you also do other products which come within the range or a particular installation prospects? So customers, not customers and people who have called you up or they requested a brochure or they’ve, asked for a sample there in your database.

You know there’s a project, but that project might not happen for another 18. 24 months. How could you use email to better target these prospects to keep a Brandon in front of their minds as well? You may have a specification tool. You may have an online specification tool that requires registrations. If you like me, I will sign up to lots and lots of tools that I think one day they’ll come in handy though there’ll be something useful and I forget that I’ve signed up so keeping tabs on registrations.

So, if somebody’s, if you’ve so many signed up a tool or an area on your website and I’m not logged back in or not come back to your website, it can consume more content or use the tool. How can you use email to remind them that they’ve signed up for this tool is valuable to help them improve their job or make their job a lot easier? Customers not contacted in last six months how to use emailed to help your business development or specification managers.

Keep a tab of all their customers and make sure that the brand is kept to the orphan of their minds. So have a look, then just extract for me or CRM those contacts that haven’t been contacted for six months 12 months and introduce a email marketing strategy. But remember think about the messaging for each of those types of audiences. You can’t just send one newsletter aimed up all of these audiences, it’s about segmentation and delivering the right message in the right way safely.

The objectives give yourself some objectives, depending on what your who your audiences are. You promoting products are in promoting events. If you’re promoting events, what type of audience is it more relevant for is existing customers? Is it prospects? They require a CPD in order to just to push them a little bit further down the specification cycle. If you like, read night lost contacts, this goes back to customers not contacted within six months.

They’ve contacted you, you that forgot, and it’s a way of just introducing hey we’re still here. We’ve still got these products, we’ve got some new products and lots of events coming up. Let’s talk cleansing database and this is a great way of if you, if you do not actively got a department or somebody that cleanses a database email, could be a great way of just deleting or eliminating all contacts.

I shouldn’t say to meet him. I should be saying replacing, so you send out an email. You might get two hundred three hundred thousand two thousand email just that bounced back. This is a great way of using that data. To then give to your telemarketing people and get them to ring. The companies have that has that contact left the company if they’ve been replaced as the branch closed down. It’s a way of just refreshing that database and getting new contacts and eliminating those old ones, feed content.

You know using email, we want. We’ve got a blog, we’ve got case studies because some great articles, it’s a way of delivering that content to your audience and again remember who wants that type of content? Do your customers really want to hear about case studies? If so, then it may be customers, or is it more likely to be beneficial to prospects? Was it more like beneficial to those who have always specified always always bought Product X? Is that email going to be more efficient or more relevant to those and remind them of other products that you do then moving on to devices remember to think about devices and have a look around oolitic? How much mobile traffic has come to your website from emails? That you’ve, already done or from mobile devices they’ll come to your website.

So more and more people are accessing emails on a mobile or a tablet. Ipad iphone, for example. What device will they be using how your email be displayed on my phone and then, if I click on a link on the iphone – and it takes me to your website or a landing page? Is that website or landing page friendly for on a mobile device or tablet device? Can I book an event? Can I download a brochure? Can I register? Can I also view other products on a mobile or device time as well? People often ask well what the best time sending emails on a Monday morning or friday afternoon or wednesday evening.

It’s really about come testing and understanding what type of content works. Well, so if it’s an event, kind of email in one family works better on a Wednesday. If it’s a content-based email, it might work better on a Friday or it might work better on a weekend, and it’s really about testing to find when you get the best opens and click throughs, but also don’t get too hung up on. When went to go.

Sending you know if it’s something that’s regular, do keep it periodicals. So, for example, we send out our module insider articles on a second second week of every month, and our blog roundup goes out to our database at the end of every month. So, every week to and week four of every month, Alima marketing activity goes up and we expect our database kind of expect them. They are about to receive any email from us.

If it’s a promotional one, it could be ad hoc, but think about time for one that I absolutely advocated is testing. Your first email is not going to be the answer. Do you need bigger links? Do you need bigger buttons, which leads on to call to actions? So what are you actually trying to get somebody to do or book or register? Think about the offer? Is that offer actually really compelling and when they click through is the offers still consistent on landing pages receive quite a few emails of late subscribe to a lot of newsletters or married construction companies? One of the concerns I have is when you click through the inconsistency between a messaging on the email and the messaging on the actual landing page.

The offer has to be consistent. Hopefully that’s given you some insight into five key things that you need to consider before. Developing an email, marketing strategy and one of the key points will need, would be a segmentation. Look at your database. Don’t please don’t send out 10,000 emails, 20,000 emails and expect returns. It’s really about breaking down your audience into smaller buckets and sending more smaller, more relevant.

Opening The Letters Written to Future Husband…

What’s up friends say: I’m Monique Nick is taking a Spanish class, so don’t mind him did I say Pamela, I’m a male mo nique. Okay, I’m on Chelsea! Today, we’re going to be doing something that is kind of just taking it back to whenever I was a teen and writing letters to my future, husband, which my future husband is now my husband, so we’re going to open up this box that I’ve been collecting all These letters in and niggas are in a few of these right before we got married on our wedding day and they even recorded it, and everything and Nick was like a mess read all of it.

Oh solving, but the file got corrupted, and so now we’re just going to kind of go through it together and share some of the prayers that I had written whenever I was 16 18. I just wanted to encourage you guys to also write prayers to your future. Husband or future wife, because it’s really special and it’s really something I’m glad I did so want to do it – let’s go just jump right into it, so this is the box that I started collecting things in for my future husband.

I also have letters that Nick’s written to me in here so, like I don’t know what this one is looks like Valentine’s. There cuz, I am just Valentine’s Day, don’t get distracted. This is about surgery. I was like. Oh, I wrote that so originally I never wrote letters in a box or anything I never put them in there, but whenever we were planning on getting married, I started doing that, but there’s this jar that I always put letters into from 16 years of age.

I even wrote it on the cap. 222 question mark. I thought I going to I put like when I thought I was going to get married and I was going to be 22 at one boy: pull some random stuff out and read it. I’r nervous cheering. I Tina this is from 2015, that’s four years ago, all right open up, let’s just Molly, okay, you know what type of person there was. This is from 219 of 15, so this is five days after Valentine’s Day, four days after real time.

You know what, when you started dating February 19, this would have been exactly Chelsea. What and out was not playing by the way. It’s not realizing yeah. I didn’t. I totally forgot about that, but yeah we started dating on February 19. 2017. Dear future, husband, we should put like actually reading some like, I should read it and I’m British accent too, but I’m not going to it’s really difficult.

Sometimes I see all my friends around me in really long relationships and I can only hope that would be me someday. I pray for you often. I wish I could know right now that God has someone planned for me, but I just don’t. I mean what, if I was made to be single. My whole life, you weren’t, I know God would make my heart content if need be, but I guess I’m just worried right now. My best friend is in a relationship that is beyond damaging and my heart breaks for him, because I know he doesn’t love her and he’s just blinded by lust praise God that I wasn’t in a situation like that.

It truly is a blessing and also occurs to date, someone for about two weeks Wow for about two weeks and know if it’s pretty much going to work out or not Wow, you knew after somebody knew after two weeks it was going to work out thing. That’s me: Oh we’ll keep reading. I feel like an awful person, because I pretty much shut this guy down that I like for a while, because I couldn’t see a future with him.

It’s almost as if every time I would pray about advancing into a relationship with them, God was like. Ah not homie, you is going wait. A second God was like quote: ah nah homie, you is, is spelled isay. This is in my language. You is growing in me right now. You don’t need a distraction. End quote yeah. I got it. Thank you. God doesn’t die like that. Alright, I guess that’s where I’m at right now.

That’s the letter! That’s that’s the letter. Alright, let’s see one this one’s from. It’s 11, 1 or 1, 1, 16, 17 years old, so yeah yeah, we didn’t know each other. We wouldn’t have met 400 washers going off or dryer action. 1. 1. 16. So this would have been 11 months 3 days before we ever first started any kind of discussion. Dear future husband, the clock just struck midnight for the new year and I cannot help but think of you.

So many questions are going through my mind, like. I wonder if he spent New Year’s Eve alone like me, because I was sick, frowny face question mark or what’s his family like, I wonder what state we will end up living in so many questions, but I pray that you were growing closer to Christ. Oh, I get it ok. This past year was a year of mistakes for me, but thanks to God’s amazing grace, I can choose to walk in the other direction.

Now I love how God is working in me, and I already know this year is going to amaze me on all sorts of levels going to college and making new friends and maybe meeting you question mark. Who knows thanks, you yeah! Well, you actually didn’t meet me that years, that’s going to say who knows, but I’m tired, so I’m going to start the new year off right with some sleep xoxo Charles 11, 27. 16. Oh okay, hold on.

I want to read that one first 11:27, 16. So Chelsea now would have known each other at this point for 23 days. So just over three weeks well, we had not met each other enough. We had my dear hubby it’s on my heart tonight that maybe God will call me into singleness my entire life. I was literally afraid of being single my whole life. I can tell, and now I’m sure, nothing 2 out of the 3 letters yeah it’s on my heart tonight that God will call me into singleness my entire life.

I mean. I know Christ is enough for me, but I long to have a life partner to go deeper with plus kids would be so cool if you’re out there. I pray that you’re growing in your faith. My recent boyfriend I just broke up because God was calling me into singleness. I prayed this is not Christ, calling all my life to be single for my entire life, but if it is, I know I can find my security and rest in you.

The most attractive thing to me in a man is a guy after God’s heart and if you’re reading this you have this, I can’t imagine myself marrying someone with the lack of this quality. Currently, I’m waiting waiting on a calling to let someone pursue me again and I want to be prayerfully certain of it well now, on that heavy note, maybe let’s go to a lawyer one. She decorated him up like all cool and stuff, it’s out of focus, but normally you’d be able to see.

It says, dear future, husband, 17 years old December, 30th, 2015 Wow, dear future, husband, it’s so funny. I cannot remember the last time I wrote to you, but I pray that you were healthy and living life like it’s your last day that probably wasn’t lately. I’ve been so on fire for God, like always having the urge to read his word. It’s been amazing. I’r finding my identity in Christ and for once, I can say, I’m not longing for a relationship.

It just makes me sad because God designed dating as a tool to eventually marry and people use these relationships as just sexual fulfillment, sometimes or don’t take their significant other seriously. What you and I are going to have some day is going to be so raw and beautiful because of Christ and the both of us plus we’ll make stunning children hey man.

I’r writing this at 2:00 a.M. On winter break, and I have breakfast with a friend in the morning, so I better sleep lots of love forever and always jealous. Could you get breakfast with the next morning? I don’t know how many letters we want to read. Should we make this last one yeah, let’s make this the last one, and then we can go through other things in the box that we kind of had last one. This one definitely looks like.

I was 13 when I wrote here we go, but this was when I was 16. This was this was February 23rd 2015. This is just after here other one. Dear future, husband people are just so judgmental at times, including myself. It just blows me away. It’s a struggle at school to even go through the regular day without one of your friends or just someone you care about questioning your reasoning in certain situations.

Wow did. I need to know this, or was this human thing, or was this thing this is me vent? I think this was you venting most times. I just want to ye yeah ye. It looks like three e’s most times. I won’t a ye most times. I want to yell at them, because so many people try to guide other people’s lives in general. I just want to tell them every time you know this is between my Savior and I I’m sorry for this one time what Jesus says don’t throw me up on the bus, sweetie uh-huh, you ain’t going to do that seriously, though people are just so curious.

Okay anyways. I guess this is some sort of therapy to write this all down. Okay, I love you Chelsey. This was not a letter to me. This was Chelsea venting there. You have it some of the relics of our love and then Nick had written me. A letter on a napkin, no, that’s uh! That’s a shop! Towel, that’s a shopping! Now! Oh mechanic. Let’s see paper towel was all I had lol. I love you more today than I ever have you’re the best ever Chelsea drive safely.

Look love! You see you Friday! Yay, I love you so much sweetheart Nick so cute when Chelsea writes it’s like man. Hope God’s, not calling me be single. Oh he’s not doing that hey! You know. People are just so mean they’re all just so mean. I don’t know why I’m writing this, but you see you my Twitter gasps, these letters that I wrote were because I I didn’t know you yet. Oh this is the list yeah yeah.

I remember I think I read this one on our wedding day, so these are qualities that Chelsea wanted and a husband and there’s many of them. Isn’t my vows whoa whoa. I read them to you, sir. All right, these are Nick’s vows, so we’re just kind of going through this box of randomness into my real vows to you – and this is my little Newton, earring yeah Chelsea. We’ve definitely had our highs and lows: we’ve shared our wins and we’ve definitely shared our losses and somehow you’ve stucked right next to me through it all now here today, you’re not going to have a choice but to be stuck with me through this life.

I promise to you that I will do the following. I promise, first and foremost to leave by seceding Christ up the throne of our marriage. I promise to love you and only you faithfully. I promise to protect your heart and situations of success and failure in good times and in the bad times. I promise to encourage you to press on when stopping short seems to be an easier route. I promise to listen to you intently in nurture your every dream and aspiration.

Lastly, I promise not to give up when it gets hard. I may not be able to do everything I may not be able to meet every single need every single time, but I promise that I won’t be able to at least do these because of that about all these things to you, I love okay. Well, I was fun for us to go through. I hope this article is somewhat encouraging honestly, because I think that these things are special to look back on with your person in the future.
