I would leave my parents, ’ noisy home to A lonely, secluded environment and I would start writing Looking back now. I can ’ t tell what I was Writing I was just writing. I grew up to love writing and by the year 2014, I got to understand how blogging works through a friend who is a blogger, Since I am a writer, it ’ s, just natural that I love to start a blog and that ’ s what I did, But there was a problem, a big problem and I will share some details about that with you very soon as I ’ ll try and use this story.
To show you the one big mistake you have to avoid when trying to build a business, If you ’ re new here, consider subscribing So that you won, ’ t miss other interesting articles. Like this Back to my previous story, I started my first functioning blog in December. 2014 and my objective was to build a reasonable blog and make money from it. Since I love writing, this should be pretty Easy right, Not necessarily So it happened that almost immediately when I started blogging.
I started seeing a million other online opportunities To make this matter worse. Many of these so-called Opportunities would be introduced to you by your close friends. Some asked me to try affiliate marketing Some wanted me to do email marketing, while some wanted you to do social media marketing. And a million other things, One big mistake: most young entrepreneurs make Is to jump from pillar to pole, moving from one business to another in search of the So-Called opportunities – This is a big mistake because, except you can Focus on a single thing: for a decade you can ’ t build a million dollars.
Company Many people start one business and just three Months after their friends tell them about another business that makes fast money, They dump that business. They just started. For the new shiny object and just 5 months after they read about a new shining object, And jump again That ’ s not how to build a business. Jeff Bezos focused on E-commerce for two decades. Before he became the world, ’ s richest man Bill Gates, focused on computer Software, Zuckerberg Focused on social media, Don ’ t make the mistake of thinking that These people, don ’ t, have distractions, They have other shining objects inviting them.
They only learn to say NO Steve Jobs is one of the most respected entrepreneurs. Ever in the world Jobs said “, I make it one of my Metra focus. And simplicity, ” Focus and simplicity. Those two things are very important because Of the way our brains work, Your brain can only do its best job. If it ’ s. Focused on a single thing for a long period That ’ s, why multi-tasking is anti-productivity, Your brain cannot just do the best job by Moving from A to W to K.
Why I said NO to Bitcoin, Sometimes last year one of my childhood friends Came to my office and spent several hours to explain to me how Cryptocurrency works. I believed him and I trust his judgment, But there was a problem. I was building a young company that needs 1,000 % of my attention To get into Cryptocurrency means that I had To take time out to study and use my resources to invest, The problem with this is that my young company Needs my 24 hours attention, plus every dollar I have.
If I want to make it a great success. I said NO to Cryptocurrency, even though I Didn, ’ t have anything against it Today. My company makes me more money than Most people can make from Bitcoin and that ’ s because I said NO to the shining object. Andrew Carnegie said: “ Concentration is My motto – first honesty, then industry, then concentration. ” To be successful as an entrepreneur. You must Be willing to concentrate all your time, energy and resources on a single thing for at least A decade Why concentration matters For many years, Henry Ford was competing with Other automobile companies, He studied his industry and always learn how To improve the production processes, He bought every car, his competitors made to Study them and know what they were doing better.
He had failed and got rejected by many of His investors, but he wouldn, ’ t give up One day Ford discovered the source of better Raw materials for his vehicle and that changed the entire game At a point in his career, almost 50 % of all The automobile in American were made by Ford but give the credit to his raw material. ’ s! Discovery Now here is the thing: concentration is very Important because it takes a whole lot of time to beat everyone.
In fact, it takes a whole lot of time to know. Your market, your best products and the best way to serve the market, A lot of studies, a lot of sleepless nights, A lot of trying and errors that ’ s what it takes to build a business and you can ’ t Do that when you move from one pillar to another pole, What happens when entrepreneurs jump from Pillars to the pole, or do many things at the beginning is that they are not able to learn.
Enough try enough thing and make enough mistakes on anything, Because they are not able to do enough studies. Or make enough mistakes, they are not able to discover what the competitors can. ’ t and When your competitors know many important things you don ’ t know you, ’ re dead, A man who concentrates on a single thing, wakes Up every day to such thing dreams every night about such thing read everything about such Things knows everything about such thing and because he has become addicted to such A thing it ’ s easier to know what no one knows and when you know what no one knows.
About a business or an industry, your kingship is sure Why Robert don ’ t invest in the stock. Robert Kiyosaki is an entrepreneur and investor, But he never invests in the stock market. Contrary to this is Warren Buffet. He made his billions by investing in the stock. What is the difference between these two people? Interest Buffet started investing as early as 11 Because he loves investing in stock.
He has Read far more than any living being about the stock market, and this makes him know more Than anyone, When you know more than anyone in a given Field you become a king Robert. At the other hand, doesn, ’ t love the Stock, and so he couldn, ’ t, invest in it. What makes you a human is when you know who You are, This is very basic because until you know, Who you are you can ’ t know what to say.
No to You have to know what you ’ re, passionate About and focus on that more than anyone else. But what about the rich? Who have a hundred Business One other thing that confused young entrepreneurs Is that they see many rich persons having 10 or 20 companies? This is it. Google has more than a hundred products. Facebook Has Instagram WhatsApp and many other investments and Jeff Bezos owns Washington, Post and other Businesses, What we have to understand here is that none Of these guys owned two businesses when they started.
This is the game. When you build a company, That makes you a million dollars. Every month you can buy the best brains in the world If you can buy the best brains in the world. You can start a hundred companies because the brains you buy can wake up each morning. To study the new market read about what is going on in the industry, take important decisions. For the company and make the company succeed, This is very different from someone who just Starts a business last year and starting another one today or jumping to a new thing today When to throw in the towel.
Yes, there are times when the smartest thing To do is to quit, But you have to be sure that you ’ re, not Quitting because there ’ s, another shining object you want to run after. You can only quit a business when every data Shows you that you can ’ t make it be. What you want not because Bitcoin is better than What you ’ re doing Here? ’ s is my encouragement for every entrepreneur. Out there it ’ s a long journey, It ’ s, a marathon Don, ’ t ever give up, because things are not Working the way you want them to work right now, As long as you believe in this venture keep Your faith alive, Wake up every morning into it, Read every day about your industry, Make your night dreams about your business, Be obsessed about it and say NO to every other.
Shining object, Concentration, Focus, Concentration Focus. Those two words are very important. Don, ’ t ever make the mistake of running from Pillar to pole, Thank you so much for reading our articles Are you between the ages of 15 and 40. Then we invite you to join our new blog Which was specially created to share with you inspiration and life? ’ s, lessons to succeed! Hello, I’m Robbie, Ferguson, nice to have you here so last week. We well you I was Hannah here but secretly you created the yep. The design you’ve got there yeah. My great things happen. Look at that very cool. So that’s you over on on your Mac. It is this is me over on Linux. So, let’s see what we can do here, Krista sent me the PSD file, so here’s comp dot PSD.
This is the same file that you’re working with right, exact, same father: let’s bring it up in gimp, okay, there we go. There’s me and again: there’s you in Photoshop now, just just for the viewers sake. How much does Photoshop cost you roughly a thousand dollars, ask right it’s somewhere in that range, you can get a student discount if you’re going to school yeah that helps you took advantage of that.
Ok. So what with the student discount? How much did it cost uh? Well, the for the sweet, the cs4 or cs5, is about 510 bucks. I gets you image ready, photoshop illustrator dreamweaver, flash bridge. I said image ready my illustrator Emiratis going in design yeah. We don’t use that ok, so that’s so it can. You buy just photoshop. You can yeah, but a lot of times, it’s worth it just to get the package yeah Cesar.
It is especially if you ate, on the deck driver yeah with the proper programs. Ok, I’m going to bring up the web browser here, we’re just going to go somewhere where we can buy photoshop. I don’t know why i’m curious! I just I just want to know Photoshop. Oh here we go Photoshop. I know what cs5, but let’s buy it. Ok, select country, I’m in Canada, select which store should we go with the educational pricing? Let’s do that might as well, just because that’s going to be the best deal going right, so this is for students or faculty save up to eighty percent.
Well, that sounds great. Eighty percent of what shop the student store – okay, let’s see so we’re looking at a adobe photoshop cs5 superfast webcam there by the way – and of course, they’ve got it’s largely because they’re using flash. Why would adobe use flash all right? Okay, crib, sweet, creative, suite, creative suite they’ll, be photoshop, extended student and teacher edition, ok, so the cheapest version I can find here is this cs5 extended student and teacher edition.
Just photoshop says from 199: ok, so us one hundred and ninety nine dollars. So that’s the cheapest. I can possibly get right. Oh well! That’s nice! Yeah! That’s what it is so you’re just going to show off now. No i’m not showing! No! That’s not what this is. No, oh, that website loaded so fast. You invited me just to make fun of krista make for a crustacean. No, it’s not i’m not. When did I say: oh look, it didn’t look at krista she’s, slow input.
I said their website. Okay. Here, look, let’s just say we’re on windows: okay, okay, i’m in English, wait a minute but wait. I didn’t even have to pay and it wants to give me the full version of the software. Let’s go back and see what we have here: okay, go back to GIMP, o RG and let’s say we want to get it for mac OS. Oh and look. It’s also available for unix photoshop doesn’t work on the units how convenient Mac OS 10? Okay! Here we go the GIMP on Mac OS 10.
Let’s see how much this one costs. Oh, I bet it’s free you’re catching. I jumped the gun with that captain on. What’s that yeah, I got it again, but machine o stands for a GNU image. Manipulation program compatible with snow leopard leopard tiger going way back. Let’s say we got snow leopard. Well that looks strikingly similar a dmg file. Okay, you kind of know what I’m saying right. Okay, think I caught on.
Unless you want to draw out a picture for me that much I don’t want to say that Photoshop our drama fix it might help the fan, putting his skills to use here there there’s a picture for Krista. She asked for it. Okay, I don’t want to say the photoshop and gamers are identical: they’re, not the same product at all, they’re, not there they’re similar in their design, they’re similar and what they can do.
There’s a program called gimp shop, which is another version of the gimp. That looks a lot like photoshop and uses a lot of the same hotkeys. So it’s easier for someone such as krista to migrate over to the free product, not that I would but the GIMP is absolutely free. So if you want to get into photo manipulation, if you want to be doing things like we’re doing tonight, when we do graphic manipulation on the show, why not use a free piece of software that’s available for download at gimp.
Org? And this is going to allow me Here: I am on linux. Okay looks kind of like mac OS. This is linux. It’s also free gluten com. Ubuntu linux is a free distribution or a free operating system for your computer that works on pc. So it’s cheaper hardware. Free operating system versus the mac, here’s photoshop fair enough, all right so not the same product, but we want to just kind of emphasize that there’s a big difference because we’re saving two hundred bucks bare minimum.
If we were a student okay, I so get ya. That’s really great deal, but as a professional, I really like the you know the photoshop programming in it sure yeah absolutely and it does have its advantages, and I I do tend to use both professionally, because there are times when I absolutely need Photoshop. I totally can admit that she’s trying to make me feel better now that song – I am, I don’t ever use Photoshop only time I use photoshop is when you send over here, yeah cuz, all your crazy Photoshop layer mask and sweetie.
No, I’m just kidding going to add more next time. Okay, so here we are in the GIMP and what we’re going to do is kind of assess how we want to work with this file. Basically, as last week, Christa went through and and creatively came up with the design and decided for me and explained how she decides how to build the website as the person who’s going to be slicing it, which may be the same person if you ever do the Slicing yourself, the person who’s slicing needs to have a bit of an idea as to how they want to to do this.
Oh look at that. That’s the mac! That’s my next! Okay! So what I mean by that is, we’ve got this gradient background, so this is a red that changes shades of red. If you’re, not too sure what you can do is you can grab your and you can follow along with this krista. If you like, okay, photoshop, just following yeah, absolutely, we should do a split screen. It’s embarrassed you may be so what I’ve done is I’ve grabbed the little Doppler here, its color picker tool in GIMP, and if I click on my foreground, color – actually click on the doppler there and read this HTML notation there.
As I click on this red is b4c be5. What I want to do here, I’m going to change layers to be background there and now do that again. There we go so a 9000 okay. If I click somewhere else see the numbers, that’s eight nine thousand Wow. What’s so funny, let them laughing just thought of a funny joke from earlier. Ok, so now click down here it changes to 81 810,000. That’s an HTML reference for the color, so you see that it’s actually a gradient, there’s different colors here, a 0000 down here is eight thousand eight hundred thousand.
So what that tells us is that the gradient is not all one color of red. So what we need to first decide is how we’re going to work with our background when we’re doing this. So what we want to do in Photoshop is maybe zoom in to about 2,000 percent yeah so and then go down to the very very bottom. One of the things that we need to do when we’re slicing a website is: we need to make sure that things are fluid.
If the site becomes taller, we need the gradient not to have a cut-off point at the bottom of the gradient. You don’t want this thing to look like a square on a white page. You want that gradient to seem to flow. So what you’ll do with that? Zoom level is use your Doppler and get that HTML character code, the color code of the very very bottom. So as close to the lower edge as you can possibly get because that’s going to map this zoom level, it’s going to be like a very, very big pixel, so that I ready 840,000 right yep.
So if I bring it up in the GIMP, let’s see if I get the same thing so I’ve got my Doppler tool. Color picker need to zoom in go down to the very bottom and grab that bottom color, because that’s where our gradient basically ends. I think I actually got a little closer to the edge because i’m getting 82,000, if you might have been up just a little bit but regardless that’s that’s, going to be pretty close, so write down of the very very bottom here.
I’ve selected the color and it’s 8000: that’s this really deep red! So the reason we want to do that is now: we’ve got that color in our clipboard. And now, if you read, if I were to zoom out of this now, okay and if I were to resize this image, the canvas size which is exactly what’s going to happen on the web, if you get a page, that’s super long. Okay! Now, what’s going to happen in the background there once I fill that with this particular color, just to kind of give you an idea is that the gradient is not going to look like it breaks off.
You can’t see a line there where the gradient stopped. If I didn’t do it that way, if I didn’t pick that proper color and there was white behind it, you’d have the bottom of the website would basically look like that. So I’ve got my color, it’s eight thousand or eight hundred thousand and that’s what we’re going to use as our background color when we get into CSS so the actual coding of the site. But we need to know that off the get-go, because we need to actually create the background gradient file.
Okay, so we are looking at part two of developing a website and Krista, and I are actually slicing up the design she did last week and basically getting it set up so that we can turn that into an actual functional real website. At this point, it’s really just a mock, it’s just a pretty picture. Yet it’s something that we would send to a customer and say here’s the look of the website. What do you think that gives us a chance with in Photoshop or the GIMP to make changes to the design change the where the items are positioned or what menu items? There are it’s: it’s really, it’s just a graphic representation of what the websites going to look like at this point, we’re assuming that the client or asif it’s our own website.
We’ve said yeah. This looks great. This is exactly what we want, so we’re going to actually work with that. So looking at my computer here and Krista’s got this up in Photoshop as well, so I’m working in the GIMP Krista’s working in photoshop, I’m working for free she’s working for thousands! Okay, so that in just throw that in there yeah I’ll be seen patrick’s day by the way, two days off, I’m Robbie Ferguson, okay, so with this, we’ve got the background color i’m going to i’m just going to jot this down because we are going to need This next week, when we get into actually coding this website, my color is 88 hundred thousand.
That’s a hexadecimal number that corresponds with the RGB or red green blue color that we’ve chosen there. That’s the red and hexadecimal means it’s ready for HTML for coding for the web for CSS, so we can set that as our background color and it’s going to match exactly to that, photoshop tells you if it’s a web, safe color, which is kind of a cool Feature of photoshop, you want to bring up the color doppler there and just tell me if that, if it shows a thousand and i’ll show you what what it does there so 800,000.
If you look right here at the top there’s a little explanation point, and it shows us that that is not actually a web safe color. If you click on, it is going to change to a similar color which is web safe, and that is what seven an f-14 18 okay. So, let’s see in the gimp how different that is web safe colors are not as big of a problem as it used to be see. That’s not that’s. Nowhere close, I guess, on the stream.
You can’t really tell that I can tell that visually yeah. More of a pink than I read, it really is so I’m going to stick with a thousand. Typically, when we’re creating the mock-up, we might try sticking with ending the gradient on a web, safe color. So when we’re selecting the colors, we could, if we want to make it easier for the guy who’s slicing, that why you might do that in a case like this, where it’s not web safe.
What I might do is, I might actually choose a color that is web, safe, okay and colorize – that that’s my background. Color now use a square marquee / me and feather that, let’s start with 10 pixels go like that, create a new layer, transparent, remember! This is a feathered marquee right so now, if I fill that, what a feather means is that the was my background color the edge of that marquee is not a perfect square.
It’s actually got a little bit of a feathering to it kind of like a blur on the edges without without actually having to blur it. Sorry, I’m talking and trying to find Phil there we go so now. If I put that above and I can, I can set that up in such a way that the I might want more than a 10 feather, I want, let’s say 35. This is just one option: I’m not going to do this in this case, because it’s such a the color is is so far off that we’re just going to stick with it, but I want to show you what you can do to fix that edge.
Oh zoom sometimes does that to me, so I can move that see what I’ve done is I’ve created another gradient at the bottom, which merges the non web-safe color into a web, safe, color, nice and clean. So that’s a possibility in this case we’re not actually going to do that, we’ll pretend that we’ve got a web safe color and that we or that we don’t care or something that it’s all good. The other option.
In a case like this, we’ve got a non web-safe color at the base. Here’s a really quick option and this one’s going to surprise you eight hundred thousand, there’s no right or wrong way to to do this. It’s really your going to choose every time you do it, but what we need to do is we need to have this clean. We need to have a web safe easiest way to do that, create a new layer. First of all, let’s, let’s canvas size, this we’re going to go canvas size, we’re going to set it to something absurd that nobody’s going to ever have we’re going to set at the fifteen thousand pixels high.
So now our image actually looks like that with the website way at the top. If I create a new layer – and I fill that layer with my background color – which is the non web-safe color okay, now what happens is we’ve got something where it’s going to be? The perfect color, it’s not web safe, but it’s okay, because it’s going to be an image on the background. So now you say: okay! Well, that’s 50! What did I say? Fifteen thousand pixels high it’s going to be huge, but what we do now as part of our slicing and always keep your PDF file, don’t overwrite.
It is take that we’re going to go image canvas size, because this is a vertical only gradient. There’s nothing horizontal! That changes, so I’m going to set this to a pixel width of five pixels, which is going to actually crop that and it looks like it disappeared. If I zoom way in or push one to see it there’s my actual gradient. Okay. So it’s like that starts up. There goes all the way down for fifteen thousand pixels.
It’s never going to actually run into anything. So, let’s save that, let’s throw it on my desktop. I’r going to call this a jpeg reason, for it is because it doesn’t need a transparency. It’s just a flat flat file. We want it to be as small as possible, so we’re going to go with a jpeg. So, let’s go going to give it a logical name: i’ve called it body underscore BG jpg, save that in the gimp choose your quality 85 is the default.
It’s fine, and now we’ve got this file, which is that background color that background gradient? Ok, it’s huge, but if we look at the file size because it’s only 5 pixels wide you’ll notice, it’s 7.3 k, it’s actually very, very sit down, yeah anything, basically, images for web. You want them to be in the sub. You know if it’s a big image, you want to try to keep it down around 50 to 80 k a very, very high end depending on, but we have you basically use common sense and realize that the bigger the site is the longer it’s going to take.
The load – and so you don’t want it to be over the top huge, so, okay, so you you can easily do that on the neck. I could hear you could and, and that – and that makes sense is now when our website is there – it’s not going to it’s not going to over, like it’s not going to be a cut off on that gradient. Okay, so that’s our first slice, I’m going to reopen that PSD, because remember we never overwrite that file.
So I’ve got my first slice, I’m going to create a folder on my desktop here, where I’m going. To put it, it’s going to be my website, I’m going to cut that the image the first slice that we made and create a folder all lower case called images. So on my desktop, I’ve created this folder called website and if it a folder in that called images and I’ve cut that to my clipboard that image there’s my first image.
Ok, so now, looking at the rest of the site, Krista we’ve got the logo, ok, which what we’ll want to do is we want to actually have that as a transparent item, because we don’t want to have to worry about aligning it perfectly with the gradient. We don’t want to have a JPEG, because then we’ve got a flat image with the background. Color like we wouldn’t want that right. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to select the layer that has my logo just right there? If I turn it off and on, I can see that the logo disappears hit ctrl a i’m, not sure what your select all is on the neck.
Oh, it’s just a command a command, a yeah. So if you have a neck, so if you select your logo layer and obviously you have the master files for the logo and that’s fine too, but from this we’re working in high enough resolution. This is why we want to build our mock-ups in high res. So we don’t have to go back and redo the entire mock up again with high-res images, always do it in high res. So with a control, a it’s selected that logo and I can go control C or command C – probably to copy it to my clipboard and in the GIMP I going to go edit paste as new image and I’ve got a perfect, transparent version of the logo.
Ok, so because it’s transparent, I want to save that as a paint which is going to maintain that transparency, I’m going to again put that in web site images may going to call this. We want to be search engine friendly, so was it aspire logo? It was a spire place. Wasn’t. Ah, yes, it’s quiet place, ok, logo, dot, ping, we’re giving it a logical name because one it’s easier for us to find when we need to actually add it to our site, but also it allows the search engines to index that as the Aspire place logo.
So once we get submitted the search engines which is going to happen further on in the series, but we need to plan for that – we need to make sure that our site is search engine optimized and ready to be indexed by this by the search engines. Ok, so you’ve got have you got that file i’ll set up as well on your Mac? You’ve got a logo. I have a logo. Ok, so you follow along and I would try it. Oh is good wit winner, I’m you have the logo saved and I had the logo.
Savers, ok, perfect and remember that, because it’s copied from our mock-up, the dimensions of this logo are exactly as they would be on our mock-up 162 by 58. Perfect. So now you see these menu items. These are all fake, don’t get deceived by these. These are not the set menu items. I get this all the time. Do you get this or clients as well? I think we need to change about us to about. Oh all, the time and you’re saying no, this is just the mock-up, that’s not a real menu.
That’s just we put that there so that you can see what it’s going to look like when we put a real menu that we put this lorem ipsum text on the page, so that you can see what the text is going to look like. But it’s not the real text. You don’t need to tell us, you know, I’m going to said it best business. Now we can read that that’s all part of the mock-up, so one of the things we need to do is just get rid of it all.
So that’s text that we’re going to get rid of that’s text we’re going to get rid of ok, so we can get rid of all the mock-up stuff that we simply don’t need by turning off the layers. Ok, so now – and I’ve already got my logo so now I end up with something like that got my background, so I’m done with that. Ok, so really the only elements that we still have left here. I am on the gimp and kristas following along in Photoshop.
Doing the exact same thing so now we need to have our different layers here, so this here is predominantly a color, so we’ll get to that. But it’s going to be a color essentially with a little arrow pointing down at the bottom. So I’m going to turn off my feather, because I have that turned on on my select tool from earlier and I’m going to grab the guide that Krista has set up here with my marquee.
It’s you see that the GIMP snaps to those guides and I’m actually going to the mock-up, doesn’t have things don’t have to be exact to the mock-up, because I noticed that the guide is just a little bit off from like maybe at one pixel. So that’s that’s! Fine, so now i’m going to select the wood grain layer and I’m going to copy that and then edit paste as new image or in Photoshop file new image and it’s going to automatically set your proportion.
So now I’ve got this wood grain, which is exactly proportionate to what it is that is going to go at the top of the website and kristas following along in Photoshop as well. So she’s actually had to paste that into a new image in Photoshop, whereas I could just edit paste his name. So I’m going to save that. That’s my wood grain for the top one of the things about wood grain that you should know is that it’s got a lot of intricacy to it, so it can end up being a pretty large file again, there’s no transparency necessary here.
So we are going to work with a JPEG, so we’re going to try with this. I want to see how large the file is going to be. If I set it where I would like it to be, which is about eighty-five percent quality. So i’m going to call this wood grain VG jpg again, i’m saving it in my web design or web site. / images flatten the image save it as 85 and, let’s go for me, see how that is, how BIG’s the file on your system at eighty-five percent.
Oh you’re going wait. I have to she’s taking it down to quality 30 at the new 78k and only 60 60 percent mine turned out at eighty-five percent to be only 60 4.5 k. So what you want to try Crist is instead of save, as on Photoshop. Go file save for web safe or whether my vices just an outlet right there, yeah and now it’s automatically selecting jiff so change that to jpg and now you’ll see that the file size down at the lower left 76.
1 so now grab the quality slider and you Can slide that down right here, top right and you can actually see how that’s going to impact your file size as well as the quality, the output. So that’s pretty good. Essentially, what you’d want to do is go down as far as you can, without completely losing the quality of the file without losing the detail, because you don’t want it to look bad, but at the same time this is a background image and there’s going to be Stuff, on top of it, that is going to be really what you’re looking at so for me, 64k is too big.
So I’m going to save a game, I’m going to overwrite and bring my quality down to 70. Double click on it see how I like the quality, it’s fantastic, and at this point it’s only 40k. That’s a that’s a bit more reasonable, especially considering us of wood grain. How are you doing over there and forth with Photoshop we’re good 41 k for me and the quality is seventy percent quality? The wood grain is pretty crystal clear and how how large is the file size? I believe it was 3333.
I could keep going I’m at. Seventy percent – Oh 3737. Okay, so we’re pretty close, I’m 41, but I’ve got seventy percent quality. How long do you have to go? I think I was like forty percent. It was pretty low right. Alright, so now I’ve got that file ready to go and that’s going to be our background for the top area, so we can close that out go back to our mock-up and I don’t need that wood grain anymore.
One of the things I got to do is I got to get these cool Polaroid’s that Krista’s created, so we’re going to get rid of all this stuff because that’s all just in colors, these are just colors, the white stuff, we’re going to use a div, we’re Not going to use an image and I’m going to go control a and this time it’s a little bit different. I’ve got the crystal just get rid of that blue area as well, because that we’re going to use a div that as well as that.
So here I am in the GIMP there’s Krista in Photoshop control, a or command a to copy, all select all – and this time I’m not going to go copy because that’s only going to copy the selected layer, which is only the picture wan na, get everything. It’s going to copy visible or copy merged in Photoshop. I suppose so now that I’ve got that in my clipboard Krista’s got that in her clipboard. Let’s paste it as a new image.
Again, I’m going to go edit paste as new Krista’s going to create a new image and then paste it onto that canvas well and we didn’t get a merged clipboard. So go back to your your master file there and make sure when you copy go edit copy merged there. You go so now create a new file, a game. It won’t be that one because that one’s got the wrong dimensions. Is it still just kidding either yeah? That’s how it’s done.
Okay, go back to your so now I think what’s happening! Okay, because you’re you’ve got a marquee around just that image. If you do a control, a no, you just want the whole board. Yes, she just had the wrong mark either. So it was copying the merge, but ok, so now paste that into a new image there we go okay. So now again, this has got to be a pain right. Yours is coming up as it’s got a white background, so you need to get rid of that white background there you go and then export that as a pin, which is going to be a larger file.
Cuz, it’s got that transparency Here I am in the GIMP and you’ll notice that I also got a bunch of space over here. So in the GIMP I can just go right. Click image, auto crop image and it automatically sucks in the sides. That’s one thing that Photoshop is lacking: that the GIMP is totally awesome at i’m, going to save that image. I’r going to call this the Polaroids pull air, no breaching of copyrights intended or registered trademarks, okay, Polaroid’s, dot, pain.
Reason we go with paying again is because this has got a transparency, so we need to be able to put this on top of the rest of our website so that, what’s behind, it can actually shine through okay, so you’re at that point in Photoshop as well. I’r going to save it with a compression level of nine in the GIMP ping being a lossless format. It’s going to be very high quality, even at high compression there’s, my ping, and it’s it’s quite large.
That’s showing me as 160 7.7 k. How are you looking 299 299, so mine’s about half the size of yours but they’re, both too big for internet, so next week we’re going to come back to that we’re going to compress down that that Polaroids dot ping file on both well, if you’re, if you’re Here we can look at it on the map if you’re not, then we’ll definitely look at it on linux as well. You can kind of get an impression for how we’re able to do a lot of the same things between photoshop, the commercial software and the gimp on that which is free on a free operating system, which is a boon to the plugin.
The fact that free actually has really good these days – it’s not like 10 years ago, we’re free men, you’re, sacrificing quality and and getting you know a knockoff product, and now these days got it thanks to community on it’s a fantastic thing. So we’re going to be looking at actually taking those slices because we’ve actually sliced up that whole website now, there’s arm there’s our actual mock up as a sliced website.
That’s it. We’ve got our logo right, which is a transparent ping. On a white background it’s being displayed, so we can’t really see it because it’s white text we’ve got our background image, which is that thing there that’s going to be the gradient. We’ve got the Polaroids which we’re going to shrink down next week and we’ve got that guy right there, our wood grain, so those are really the only images that we need to get started with the website to make it look like you’re, ma club and then we’re Going to be using CSS as well as HTML and PHP, in order to actually turn that into a real functional working website, along with some cool little Java scripts and anything else, we need to do to make that work.
This is category 5 technology, TV and you’ll find us online triple w category 5 TV. You
But it’s helped nice to see that I don’t know exactly what I want to do, but I wanted to start by looking up some words and that were suggested to me by my brother and if you have any words that we you might want to look up. You can, let me know in the chat so I’ll start with literally and see what we can find out.
I haven’t looked up any of these words previously, so I don’t know what we’re going to find, but I’ll go where I normally do. When I start looking words up in the for my episodes, I’m thinking about putting all these words together into a article, the top five misused or words of 2017 or earlier, because I don’t know when this word changed but we’ll find out, I’m sure we’re going to Go with literally right now we’ll look up literally and see what it how it’s changed over time there we go.
That’s a little bit easier to read so first place. I usually go. Is the Oxford English Dictionary you can see right here. I mean fix something there. We go that’s what I want. Okay you’ll also get to see that the reason I like dictionary so much is because I’m a terrible speller really that’s so I spent a lot of time in them when I was a kid and I’m grown to appreciate them. Okay, let’s see it’s borrowing from Latin.
Let’s take a look at what the definitions it gives are here, first of or relating to the writing study or content of literature. Oh, I put in the wrong one: it’s literary literally, okay, sorry, my I’m really not a great speller! So that’s why I do what I do here. We go in a literal, exact or actual sense, not figuratively or allegorically, and when it uses a word, that seems to be the same I’ll, usually go and do a search for that as well.
Just so we can get that definition, because I don’t like it when dictionaries we use the same words of or relating to a letter or letters. Hmm now one thing to keep in mind when looking through the Oxford English Dictionary is the first definition it gives. Is the oldest definition they can find and right down here? It shows you examples of the word, so this is a 1398. These words are terrible. I can’t ever names are awful Bartholomew Asst, anglich Asst and this character is called the thorn.
So this is the lip SB to scrape the voice of literal. So what it looks like here’s, it comes, the meaning comes from that’s what the text says: it’s literate! It’s it’s in the letters there and when I put together my episodes. Normally, I have two I’ll read through this entomology up here and I can usually find information in those in the etymology. That’s interesting and I can look up other aspects of it and facets that make it very that I can make into a story until during my shows.
So it comes into English from middle French and I usually tell my stories in the reverse order of this. So I’ll start down here with the Latin. Sometimes this can be hard to read because of the way they put it over relating to the letter of a text obtained by by taking words and passages in their primary and usual meaning without regard to any underlying significance. Mysticism or allegory, and so that’s what the word that the French word the Turab meant before it came into English.
Let’s see if I can skip down a little ways and it’s a tanam in post, classical latin, relating to books, literature relating to correspondence learned written okay. Let me go back to literally and see what see if it comes up with anything italian literalmente. Now that doesn’t have anything more so it looks like it has do pretty much throughout its history, with just having to do with what a text literally means.
Thank you for your patience with me. This is my first live stream. I’r and I, like I said in my dictionary article. I have no idea what I’m doing classic classical Latin litera litera meaning letter. So it goes back to a word what the words say: not what the meaning behind them is not any kind of interpretation. When my brother suggested this word, he said the Webster’s dictionary had changed their definition of literally figuratively.
So we’re going to look up the Webster’s dictionary merriam-webster right there, literally literally in a literal sense or manner as such, in a way that uses the ordinary or primary meanings of a term or expression, in effect, virtually used in an exaggerated way to emphasize a statement Or description that is not literally true. This is the definition that that he wanted me to point out in my articles that we have used this word so much in an exaggerated way that it now literally means virtually doesn’t even mean figuratively.
It means virtually so when usually when I’m collecting notes on for my shows, I will copy and paste this information, and it’s too big, I didn’t want that. I want it to be smaller there. We go, that’s what I want so literally another fun place. I like to go is the etymology dictionary online etymology dictionary and I put the extra tea in there because that’s where it came adverb in a literal sense from literal plus or minus Li since the 17th century, it has been used in metaphors hyperbole to indicate what Follows must be taken in the strongest admissible sense.
This is not showing the actual history of the word. Let’s, let’s go to literal, let’s see late 14th century here we go Origen taking words in their natural meaning originally in reference to Scripture and opposed to mystical or allegorical from the latin late, latin literalists or literal is of or belonging to letters or writing. That’s from latin litera letter alphabetics letter alphabetic sign literature, books related to literalness, so it’s pretty straightforward.
Its meaning hasn’t changed that much since the days of Latin up to three three viewers awesome. So if there’s any other words you’d think that would be fun to. I bet thank you for the happy birthday, appreciate that and thank you for tuning in appreciate. It hope it’s not too boring of a of a live stream. Okay, this is one of the other ones he suggested we look into, and this is diversity, so we’re going to head over back to the OED and see what it has to say.
This is I’m probably going to throw in equity with this one cuz that one was recommended to me by one of my patrons the other day. Oh, I got ta, I hope just docks myself, Multnomah County, oh well, okay, diversity, oldest definition in the Oxford English Dictionary, is the condition or quality of being diverse, different or varied difference, unlike miss. So when things are unlike each other, let’s look up just diverse the base word of diversity, because diversity is the word, that’s being you overused, but understanding the base.
Word can be important too so paste that in there let’s see, diverse is an adjective there. We go oldest definition, different in character or quality, not of the same kind, not alike in nature or qualities, formerly also written divers. So the Oxford English Dictionary is massive. It’s I don’t even know the number of volumes they’re, only printing one copy of the new edition. That’s physical and that’s going to go to the Queen of England that it’s going to remain just an online archive now, because there’s just so much in it the words most of them aren’t even used anymore there most of them are archaic and if they show an Old English word in the etymologies of these, you can click on them and it’ll.
Take you right to them in fact, we’ll go to divers and see what comes up with different or not alike. Now, if you’re looking up like divers as as like someone that dives or people that dive, I mean you could click on this, I mean you’d have to ignore the adjective part, but get something completely different. So these so we’ll go back, and actually let’s go back to that cuz that looked like it had the actual etymology in it.
That was longer. You have to dig to get the content for my, so I’m going to copy this cuz, I’m probably going to need to hit on that and my article stupid key commands there. We go okay, Middle English, diverse, diverse French divers divers. It’s a feminine word, apparently different. Odd wicked, cruel ooh, this is good stuff, Spanish, diverse, oh, and so all of those words that came from Latin versus meaning, contrary different unlike separate original, turned different ways.
I’r not even going to try and pronounce that I usually have to look that stuff up. I can’t remember all of it, so the spelling in Middle English in differently, diverse, diverse, stressed it. I don’t know. I really. I that’s pretty interesting that it means different, odd wicked. So if we go back to its French, meaning it’s after being derived from Latin, it means odd, wicked and cruel, not necessarily a good thing now I do want to look up.
I like to look it up. Another dictionary says well I’ll, see what they have to say about it: diversity, plural diversities, condition of having or being composed of different elements varieties, especially the inclusion of different types of people such as different races or cultures, and groups, or origins programs intended to promote diversity. In school, ok – and this is one of my favorite places – the etymology dictionary quality of being diverse to do usually gives a short definition, but it says middle 14th century wickedness or perversity.
Just I can have so much fun. I’r going to need to do a whole episode about this word because I didn’t realize it actually meant wickedness or diversity or oddness. I could have a lot of fun with that. Contrarily contradiction: disagreement, ooh because that’s what they that’s. What happens with diversity is the disagreement with our current culture they want to. They want to change it to something different.
Okay, dye versus turned a different way. Can you read what’s on the screen the web pages, when I’m in there thanks drew the poetry? One will be interesting: I’ve got to wait on the cozy comfy poetry Channel. After I, I’ve got to write the script, send it to her she’ll. Give me her response and we’ll get that taken care of. In fact, I’ve even got the script right here. I’r not sure how I want to define it or which word I’m going to use poetry, poet, poem, because, looking through the etymology and stuff each of those variants, the poem poetry poet, seemed to have slightly different paths to becoming what we are today.
I thought they would all be the same word just with different endings to indicate different things, but they all came kind of differently. So I’ve got to decide how I want to handle that in my script. But interesting fact about poetry is Police’s meant to make literally to bring things into existence, so there’s even scientific terms like he must hope. I can’t say it’s crazy, Latin or Greek. He mo topi he mo to pieces, hope he mo taupe poesis, meaning the formation of blood cells.
Sorry that took me so long to say, but there’s lots of word like that, where poetry just meant to make things to bring things into existence, and it the other another thing I haven’t touched on in any of my articles, but a lot of the words that We use come from different languages, not all of them had a an actual English analog that came before it, but poetry did I. My Old English is very weak meter, growl, gree, grow war, force, meter grows, meaning like verse or to make verse meter craft is the one I like.
The best is the word for the art of versification, so the art of making poetry is meter. Craft, which I found very interesting, is the English acronym, because that’s very not acronym, but the analogy it. It tells you exactly what it is. It’s making meter like metered speech, metered, poetry and that crafting it it’s really cool. Is there any words you’d like me to look up anything interesting for anyone in the audience right now, um.
Let me know in the chat I know, there’s quite a bit of delay on the chat on there, I’m getting used to that so need to come up with. Let me go back to the diversity word that we’re looking at native, meaning being being contrary to what is agreeable or right perversity. Evil existed in English from the late 15th century, but was obsolete from the 17th century. Diversity is a virtue in a nation. Is an idea from the rise of the modern democracies in the 1790s, where it kept one faction from irrigating all power, but this was not quite the modern sense as ethnicity, gender, sexual identity were not the qualities in mind, see at this time.
That was probably around a lot of the religious revolutions and some political revolutions, so they were talking about it was diversity of thought was what diversity meant up until modern day and that’s what they thought was. The virtue was having Protestants, Catholics, that’s and having different denominations of Christianity, different governments having different states and different ways. People thought the things should be run is what was the virtue not having everybody to agree on the same way, things should be run but have different ethnicities, gender, sexual sexual identities and and so on.
That’s not what the virtue was: diversity, they’re conflating, essentially two different words at this point: diversity from the 1790s or from the 17th century to diversity. Today, they’re they’ve, given it to different meeting meanings and conflated the two words so anytime, they read diversity and historical text. They read into it their own meaning and it’s important to keep those meanings separate.
So you can understand what people believed back then. It’s also important to understand what people mean when they use the word today. So I this word is fascinating. I’ll still put it in my top five misused words of 2017 article, and it’s mostly going to be about how words change their meaning over time. It’s what I’m going to cover in that – and this is another great example that I didn’t realize going to be as good as it is racism yeah this one.
I find interesting because there’s two words and I haven’t done enough research to know the difference and what thank you point point curation, I’m actually let me skip races and we’ll move on and I’ll do some research on the word that point curation recommended in my and The patreon, and what do you guys think the those of you who are my patrons? What do you guys think of the changes that they’re making with the new fee structure? Let me know in the comments we might talk about that I’m not too upset by it, but I want to hear what you have to say: let’s see we got um equity is what we wanted to look up see if I can spell that correctly.
Like I said early on in the in the stream, the reason I like dictionaries is, I spent a lot of time using them because I’ve never been good at spelling. I know that sounds a little oxymoronic, but we’ll see equity. Actually I want to do the look. It up in the Oxford English Dictionary. First, it’s one of my favorite things in the world. Is this this book thanks you mum, birth racks for the happy birthday, equity and, as I mentioned earlier, the Oxford English Dictionary gives you the oldest definition.
First, this one dates back to apparently the 1315. Thank you for hanging in there point curation, I’m. I understand the frustration I’m a little ambivalent, but I understand why why people dislike the changes and I still think their service is good and I think it’s important for the future of content, curation or content creation in the future, the quality of being equal or fair Fairness, impartiality, even-handed dealing, so I think this is this old definition is still very different than what how people use it today, when you hear people say equity, a lot of times in the Evergreen State University, that’s where the word started coming up a lot just north Of us or north of me up in Washington, they, the equity Council, you know the way they use.
The word seems to be more about results and not about treatment. What is fair and right, something that is fair and right, rarely in plural. This is closer to the definition that people are using today. Let’s go down to compounds defined so as to include other systems and our analogs and others. Okay, let me look at the etymologies here. Real quick doesn’t look like there’s much here. It comes from French equate.
I don’t know French, so I’m probably pronouncing that terribly from Latin meaning, fair, okay and in today it seems that equity means not fairness, but equal distribution or results. Regardless of what is just or fair. That’s. I think I think the difference right now is the point at which fairness happens, because if you look at a system – and you look at just a state like a single image of it, what you get is, does everybody have the same thing right now and if The answer is no that could be defined as unfair, but if you look at the system as a time line, the beginning state could have started in a state of fairness and in state ends with you know: the Pareto distribution, a lot of people on top and Or a lot of people on the bottom and very few people on top, and I think my interpretation of that system, or that way of looking at it, is important because the people that’s why death evolved.
The way I like to put it is because the people that are up here die at some point and their their goods their money. Their wealth, then, is either path is passed down to their descendants or redistributed through some means that they’ve selected, their descendants, may not be as good with the money as they were, and then it just gets spent and sent out into the economy. The people that I want are looking for.
Equity are looking at a static image of what reality is at this moment, and they want that. To be the same. I was reading a I was listening to an audio book. It was the consolation of philosophy by Boethius and he’s talking the characters in a prison. This is like early medieval period and he’s talking to philosophy and an embodiment of philosophy and they’re talking about fortune like the god fortune, and she has this wheel that she turns and to become fortunate.
You have to get on this wheel and when you’re at the top you’re riding high you’re you’re at the high point. And but to get that you have to agree to agree to go down the other side of this wheel. That she’s on and people have understood that for centuries that when people have a lot, they they lose it very quickly. The situation Boethius was in was he’d, been like an advisor to a king, he’d been wealthy, and now he was in prison on an island.
Unsure of what his fate would be, as he was writing this book, and shortly after he finished the book, he was killed and probably one of the most gruesome ways I’ve ever heard described it was. It was very the very enlightening book I like stuff like that and but his description of wheel and the wheel of fortune and how people go up and down really, I think, illuminates what what the problem everybody’s seeing and what the solution is.
It’s time and death and I I don’t think people look at life that way it’s like the arguments about now. I can’t even think sorry. It takes me a long time to do things like this and think things through and write those scripts. In fact, it takes a long time for me to read them and get them recorded. Let’s move on to another word here, so what is fair in the in the world of fortune? Is that sometimes you have good fortune, and sometimes you all have bad.
It will not always be equal between people at different places on the wheel that yeah the the here’s, what it was, the the wealthy change. The top 1 % will always have a huge amount of wealth because they’re the top 1 %, but who is in the top 1 % changes from year to year? If, if you own a house, that’s if you own a big expensive house, but you don’t make a lot of money. If you sell that house, you could be one of the top earners for the year because you brought in a lot of money, and that puts you in the 1 % of earners for that year, but the next year you may not be in the top 1 % of earners, because you don’t have that asset and you haven’t sold it that year, it there’s a lot more nuance to who’s in the 1 % and who, who the haves are and who the have-nots are.
It changes and I think that’s what people misunderstand and – and I really think the the aunt of hypocrisy. That’s the word I’m working on next, but I think that’s the the solution to the equity problems that people are looking at, where they want people to have the same stuff, because if everything stays the same and everybody always has the same level of wealth, that’s kind Of boring, there’s nothing for me to strive for there’s no way for me to become better a better person because I don’t need to, but if we let people take, turns and have that opportunity, yep and pretty much I’ve United States, Canada, a lot of Europe is There were the 1 % of the world.
Okay, this is, let’s see where’s the word this word is one of them. I really wanted to look into because I don’t think a lot of people know exactly what that word means impeachment. They think it means removal from the office of the presidency, and did I mean it just happened? I remember I was a kid and Bill Clinton was impeached. He was never removed from office. This is the word. We’d have to look up in some kind of a legal dictionary, though, to get the definition that we’re looking for for them, but I want to see what it means in general, action of impeachment hindrance.
Prevention, obstruction, impediment obstacle. Okay and it looks like it comes from French impingement impeachment and that’s some judge to impeach. Let’s take a look at the word to impeach just to see if we can get a better idea, latinum pedicure to catch and tangle. Hmm, it’s an impediment debate, basically, is what the word comes from so they’re going to impede the president. By doing that, let’s see if merriam-webster has has to say sorry from being a little a DD with my topics here, to bring it in to bring an accusation against okay to charged with a crime or misdemeanor specifically to charge a public official before a competent tribunal.
With misconduct in office – well, that’s it looks like it just means. Basically, a cute accusation, like a formal accusation and then down here we got the third to remove from office, especially for misconduct. Hmm, there’s, let’s check Wikipedia they’ve, usually got some reasonable information. It’s kind of like common knowledge, the best place to go for common knowledge kind of information. Let’s see impeachment is the process by which a legislative body formally levels charges against a high official of government impeachment does not necessarily mean removal from office.
It is only a formal statement of charges akin to indictment in criminal law, so most of these people are using the word impeachment to say that it means removing the president from office. I mean they haven’t even looked at, looked it up at all it. I guess what they’re coming from is: they think the the charges against him are so obviously true that if he’s impeached, he will be removed. But I think in the case of this, the president: that’s in there now it’s mostly going to be a hindrance and not so much a removal, let’s see because impeachment and conviction of officials involved over overturning of normal constitutional procedures by which individuals achieve high office election And because it generally requires supermajority, they’re, usually reserved for those deemed to have committed serious abuses of their office and they’re, not even accusing him of anything he’s done while in office, yeah did there’s a strong stigma.
I mean growing up. I thought impeachment meant removal from office because I always heard applied to Richard Nixon who retired he’s left office. He resigned, he didn’t wasn’t removed from office by the impeachment process and it turns out there was another president before him that was impeached and me and my misspellings again sorry, let’s see Wikipedia impeachment in the United States. Let’s see – and I can’t just give me a list – Andrew Johnson was impeached impeachment of Andrew Johnson.
This could be a fun episode to go through because I could talk about the history of impeachment through the United States. Talk about Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. What they were all impeached for that could be fun high crimes and misdemeanors according to Article two of the United States. Ok, I’m already bored of this for this purposes of the stream, unless you guys think it’s interesting and thank you for showing up.
I really appreciate actually having an audience. I wasn’t sure how many people would show up in this. Let’s go back to racism because there’s another word that is strongly associated with it racialism and I don’t actually know if there’s a huge difference between those two words. I know that racialism is older and I think it usually just means I probably just you could probably look me up with that information.
Couldn’t you yeah? Well, I’m not that worried racialism here again, Oxford English Dictionary gives all this definition racism an early term an earlier term than racism, but now largely suppressed by it surpassed sorry. So we’ll click on racism, since it’s not giving me that much of a difference here, a belief that one’s own racial or ethnic group is superior or that other such groups represent a threat to one’s cultural identity, racial integrity or economics.
This was okay. This entry was the 2008, so this is probably closer to the more social justice definition that people use, but it still doesn’t mention power plus privilege, which I kind of expected. It would being revised by 2008 and that might have slipped in there, but or groups possess specific characteristics, abilities or qualities which can be compared or evaluated. Oh yeah. That was the second definition.
Essentially, it’s also a belief that members of different, so racism doesn’t necessarily mean you think you group is better or that the groups are a threat to you. It can also mean that you think races or ethnic groups possess specific characteristics, abilities or qualities which can be compared and evaluated. Hence, prejudice discrimination, antagonism directed against people of other race, racial or ethnic groups or more widely other nationalities, especially based on such belief.
So it’s saying here that racism is treating people poorly because you believe that groups can be compared to each other. So you could believe Asians are smarter than white people and that they’re, weaker or some think they’re worse at basketball than black people, and you could treat them differently. You could treat them worse and that would be racism see. Then, let’s open up that racial plus ISM.
That’s point curation, that’s kind of what that second definition here means also a belief that members of different racial or ethnic groups possess specific characteristics, abilities or qualities which can be compared or evaluated and then treating them differently based on those. So if you believe that Asians are smarter than other people, you might hire an Asian and over a black person or a white person.
This second definition gives negative things done based on race, not positive things done based on race and that’s what I thought. The difference between racialism and racism were as racialism is, where you believe, there’s a difference, but you only really treat people better on that. You believe there’s a difference, but it doesn’t affect your decision-making in negative ways. You don’t hate people, because they’re different number, three acts that could be, but I think the Deaf thing, what they’re trying to go with in this definition is that if you’re they’re treated negatively, but I their race realist seems to be the word for what you’re looking At there, but that doesn’t even count either, because that would make everybody that, because he wouldn’t hire a basketball of a basketball team, full of short people or short asian people.
You know if I it was a Walter Williams. I think it was Walter Williams yeah. It was, it was Walter Williams, I heard him say in a article if you had fifteen, if you had to build a basketball team of five people, and you had fifteen people to choose from five African Americans five occasions and five Asians and you had to build The team from those people who would win the most diverse team or the or the team where he picked all of the African Americans to be on the team.
That’s I don’t know if you’d call that racism, but you had you, everyone has an idea about who would win. That bet who would win that game of basketball and that’s what I was hoping I’d find is a word for for that, treating people and if so, if the only information you know is, you’ve got black people, white people and Asian people, and you got to pick Five people from these 15 to build a basketball team and I was hoping that racialism would be the word for that and it’s not it’s according to the OED anyway, let’s look in some of the other dictionaries.
Let’s look that’s Oxford again. Let’s look at Webster a theory that race determines human traits and capacities, also racism. So it looks like there’s a lot of different definitions around and none of them I found so far say anything about power plus privilege. I think a I think you point curation says I think it would be racist to say a black person’s experience or viewpoint is different from a white person’s, as opposed to saying two individuals have different viewpoints yeah.
I think that that can be accurate. I also think that the first one is a very collectivist view, and I think that’s really where what race racism is, is the the worst form of collectivism, because you’re looking at people based on not even their skin colors, just what you’re? Looking at that group and you’re believing they all have the same traits you’re not looking at the individuals within the group, let’s look at that.
I think I’m pretty sure collectivism was created. Let’s see what that let’s see curious, and I can’t spell alright just missed a letter – the socialistic theory of the collective ownership or control of all the means of production and especially of land by the whole community or state the people collectively for the benefit of the People there’s probably a lot more to it than that. That’s interesting.
That immediately goes to socialism in this definition, hmm, because if you’re looking at people as a whole people as groups – pardon me – I mean here – I know what word we should do prejudice. No, it doesn’t. That’s it. I think it was a referring to the political, sorry, the political meaning of collectivism. I’r trying to that’s why I looked up prejudice, I’m trying to find a word that more accurately describes judging people based on as based as a group, preconceived opinions not based on reason or actual experience, bias, partiality, unreasoned, dislike hostility or antagonism towards, or discrimination against, a Race, sex or other class of people.
I think I really think prejudice is a good word for it, but that’s because it see this in the 13th century. This is still the oldest definition of the word, the King and sometimes it’s weird and old, a well older, techspray prejudice because they use I as the King and Prejudice of him and to sorry let other bishops, that’s not helping me figure out the definition here. So I actually I don’t mean, look up Webster’s collectivism, sorry, I’m being this distracted ADHD again political or economic theory advocating collective control, especially over production or distribution emphasis on collective rather than individual action or identity.
Yeah I’ve. That’s an interesting observation, lumber Thrax! So just like. Oh Edie definition of racism prejudice also lacks any positive form. So, like your example of saying Asians are intelligent doesn’t fit that definition. That sounds about right. That’s a way I would in my in my dictionary, if I was right, I changed the definitions. I don’t just breed thee. When I create my entries, I don’t just read the Oxford English definition I used the.
I give the definition that I hear and I understand when I read the words of ice, said prejudice. I would give the definition of essentially prejudging something. So I have a prejudice towards my wife. I’r going to I’d rather spend my time with her than with someone else. That would be a prejudice. Ever I have a prejudice towards chocolate ice cream. I have prejudged all chocolate ice cream as being better than vanilla.
It’s not necessarily bad things, I’ve, and so I would probably make my definition or it definitely would make my definition. In my entry on prejudice be more neutral. I might mention that it often has a negative connotation in modern society, but I don’t think that’s the way. A lot of I think a lot of people use it enough in a positive way. It’s like, I have a prejudice toward something. I have a prejudice towards Nintendo vs.
PlayStation. I think that would that would be a better definition and that’s what I want to do with my dictionaries. I don’t always think that, what’s in the dictionary is accurate to the way people use them, and that’s why definitions, dictionaries, change the definitions and if you look at the Oxford English Dictionary we’re looking at prejudice, this word was updated in 2007, where there was an older Version that was created in 1989, and they can even go look at that older entry and hear prejudice, injury, determined or damaged detriment or damaged caused to a person by judgment or action in which his rights are disregarded, resulting in injury.
Hence injury to a person or thing likely to be the consequence of some action now, chiefly in particular phrases as in okay, that sometimes these older ones get confusing, and I have to read them three or four times, but that it’s also interesting here. That prejudice is considered as a noun is considered damage to a person caused by a judgement. Injury damage hurt loss in the genitive to terminate dismiss with extreme prejudice to kill or assassinate, hence termination with extreme prejudice.
Hmm, that’s that’s fascinating. Where did it come from? It came from pray, pre, prefix, judicium judgment sentence see same as in judicial, so yeah it does mean prejudge prejudice damage. Ah, sorry, I’m reading and trying to let’s look it up in the let’s see this one is usually a lot clearer, ud, you deesis you deesis genitive, meaning injury. Physical harm. Hmm in the mid 14th century is a legal term.
Oh so when they say with extreme prejudice, it means to do physical harm, Wow, a violation of legal rights, meaning preconceived opinion, especially not necessarily unfavorable, especially but not necessarily. Unfavorable is from the late 14th century in English, also a changed meaning to mean preconceived opinions in the 14th century from medieval lat, Latin prejudicial injustice from what so prior judgment.
So it seems to be made of words that mean to prejudge things, but it meant damage previously. That’s interesting prejudice verb to injure or be detrimental to interesting. So sorry, I’ve got a bit of a coffee er. Oh it’s almost been an hour. The time is flown. Okay, one other thing I’d like to mention: do we have any Tolkien fans out there, I’m kind of into philology, and he was probably he’s, probably the most famous foolishest in the world.
What a lot of people don’t know is that Tolkien was a writer for the Oxford English Dictionary. He wrote a lot of the W section, and one of them that was specifically pointed out to me was in was walrus. Someone pointed out that this particular entry was written by JRR tolkien, the same guy that wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the seahorse or Morse. I’r not even going to try and release that read that a carnivorous pimped Marine Mammal.
I lied to the okay. I shouldn’t tried to read: I lied to the seal or a Terran or sea lion and chiefly distinguished by two tusks exerted up upper canine teeth. It inhabits the Arctic. Seas of variety found in the North. Pacific has sometimes received a distinct, specific name, OB sis, so this is a bit of talking’s work that a lot of even some of his big big fans – probably don’t even know is – is there is a talking’s definition of the word walrus.
Oh, it looks like it comes from German holding OBC or its obeisance yep OB seahorse, okay! Well, thank you guys for joining me today. I’r glad this went this went well. I had I had a fun time. I didn’t know how it was going to go happy birthday to me. Thank you to all of my fans, followers and patrons. I look forward to doing more of these in the future. My recording rig and my computer is in a living room so with a family running about.
I don’t particularly think it’s going to be good to have a television going on in the background, so I’ll, try and find time to do these usually I’ll end up doing them late at night or if I ever have a day off at work. I can do it in the middle of the day when everyone’s gone at school or work. So thank you for joining me and I had a fun time. Thanks, bye, you
So this the topic right now is about digital marketing, and I have the main man himself he’s been here before, but before I introduce him readful for blog on Twitter. Right, therefore underscore blog on Instagram and right.

Maybe you can reintroduce yourself? Okay, my name is Emanuel Ax, my digital marketing strategist, and I also a student yeah, so students at KCA School of Business, studying vit all right and you’re a digital marketing guru. Yes, so you have your own company. Yes, I have my own company, where blogs, so we basically do digital marketing and also social media management, digital marketing and social media management.
This is something you had a passion for way back since ice cream yeah, you just turned 20 by the way. Yeah, it’s a digital marketing is your phone, but before we get into that craft of digital marketing and why the need for digital marketing in 2019 – the brief history about booyah, so people can get inside, whom I study so way back in from to in high school. At passion for social media, you know cz to call your Facebook, you are enthusiastic, you a little care, so you could compete likes and all that and follow us.
So I realized that we have opportunities online because right now many people they are trying to venture in towards the in thing now and that is their social media and stuff like that. So when I complete school in 2017, so I decided to do words, my passion, so that is online stuff, also yeah. So last year I realized that we have opportunities online. So I get I got support for my family and now I it turned your business.
Your business, your social media, what type of support did you get from you? You know for our business, you have capital, capital is number yes number, and so that is the key thing. This spirit, determination and also hard work, all right, yeah so cap. So you got from your parents yeah. What did you spend on your capital? Oh, so I did my branding. You know you need to get a website. You need to do your branding like the local stuff like that yeah.
So that is basically what I do with my captors and also you know you have to register the business. So it’s a registered company yeah, so you’re a blogger as well. Uranium touch them. What is your topic of conversation in your blog, so I’m trying to okay in my blog, I’m trying to like get the business. You know right now, I’m trying to tell that story that the impact of social media for business. You know right now, everybody’s many businesses.
They open daily, but they don’t know how they don’t know how to vent into social media. So I’m trying to teach them how that is done through social media and also my part of my target is the youth you know many of them is use social media. It’s not about the likes and the followers, but you can convert it to some social medias. You can earn from social media. So that is the story that I’m trying to tell that.
Is it sure, you’re trying to tear on your blogs how to read some of your wife? Oh you can just log on to weblog calm. Also, social media handles are to be a blog, of course, yeah across every social media. Thank you very much. Mister we’re. So our topics today not too complex for somebody like you, we don’t adverse experience like this I’d like to start on the branding tip. What is the importance of branding and what is branding mean to you for business for Neiman who’s? Reading, okay, you know branding is like your CV for a business so for digital branding.
You have to understand what you want to venture into like your audience. You know, if you, let me say, you’re an equal casual like company. You cannot target entertainment. Also, you have to understand your audience and also you have to create the content that it’s inline in the audience. So the understanding your audience is very key and also the type of content that you create for your audience is very key people say also, you know, branding not about the logo having the logo.
Maybe you print t-shirts, so you have to venture into your audience and also the content that you give yeah. The brand needs to be understood goes past. The t-shirt goes past, the cups, the guards – and I can’t say everything branding – goes past – that yeah the people need to understand the brand yeah. So this, how do the people get to answer so? I have business, say: buddy muscles technologies. I have my logo there.
It’s on facebook, my facebook cover wall, my twitter, it’s everywhere some caps it on its own t-shirts. What is the next step for me for this branding? Traveling? Okay, for you you after getting that you must know how to engage with your audience. You know you! You have to engage your audience, you cannot have a dialogue ian’s. So after creating that content, you you can use tools. You know there are various tools that you can use to understand your audience and also engage with them in that line, and also would you I taught you on to achieve.
You know yeah all right so they’re questions that you ask yourself what what you want to achieve with a brand. Maybe what you you want to right now, event campaign, what you want to achieve for the event and all right, yeah, all right. So you need this down and you tabulate. You come up with a strategy with a strategy. Well now you’re going to get here. These are some of the services you offer as you do, your blog’s yeah, wonderful.
So when it comes to marketing, I like to approach it in a three-dimensional way. So where we have the we have the strategy, we have what you want to achieve and analysis here, hmm all right to coming up with the strategy. Some people will ask all right: how do I go with the strategy? I just have an event. Okay, I just I just want to sell clothes yeah I just want to sell suits. How do I come up with a strategy? Okay, your strategy will depend in in very many ways like I’d, say what you want to achieve like for running an event.
You understand your target, you know your niche after that also you’ll walk in there. If you want to run a campaign, you do budget. You know we have various like the online tools that you can use to do that yeah. So the tools are the next step, all right. So how do you pick the right tool for the right thing? Because we have so many tools we have from? What’s up to YouTube yeah as platforms, so with that for picking the right tools, you like, let me say for for right now, you we are trying to to getting into the trends what is trending yeah, so you can also use that like commands the way you Pick into here, because so you can, you can check into that and also because people may get use into it, and they relate that in into your your strategy.
Oh yeah, so what’s training is one of the ways you can and paper. What is the other way? You can use to pick a tool, see a tool that matches your brand. Okay. Also, you can use the influence of marketing. You can use storytelling yeah. All right, you can also use to italic yeah influencer marketing is familiar with me. What is this reach enemy? Okay? So this very telling thing you are trying to engage your audience.
You still, as you tell a story when you open up in Damn Channel, so you tell a story in relation to what you you intend to run yeah all right. So after you come up with the strategy, you come up where you pick the specific tools that you want. There comes the big task now of getting your data and analyzing this data and getting to understand the impact on what you’ve done, and maybe you can use this in what you’re going to do this, what you’re going to do next? How do you do this? That is very important, so we have tools like you know.
You have to to know how you are you’re performing, so we have various social media tools that you can use to analyze your data on Twitter. We have Chris desk, you can use you incorporate there. Let me say the application article, you, a social media platform, so you you will be able to gather starts and you know starts – are very important because you’ll know where you and what you intend to achieve.
Yes, and also you really improve on where you go wrong and all that, so we can use to desk on social media. You can also use some all. So there are various tools you can use yeah alright. So that is very important. You make sure every campaign that you have you have for myself in my business, I used the data to do my report for my clients, we, like, after certain period of time I have to do a report where I my and what I intend to achieve at The end of maybe a week or a month right, yeah, wonderful – that is, that is amazing in theory, but so we deep are reading us right now and say that they’re doing their own things online.
Some of them are actors. Some of them of some of them are tech, guys somebody creating an app somewhere and some of them, some of them. I have been cabdrivers, some of them are providing. I really mean had lessons makeup artists, so this is somebody will see thousands of followers and they want to take it to the next step, convert this to a business into a business. Yes, what are some of the tools you tell them? Ok, I’ll! Stick to your content, your content, you know, if you let me see if you post a picture, it has to be quality.
Content like it will make me maybe to comment or something or to like it. So yes, yes, your caption is very important because that is what drives me to your post yeah. So maybe, if you are doing marketing, so I love to check that so your content is very key. Yeah yeah, a lot of beauty. You even knew you know yourself like nowadays. Instagram is very that it has very that so like if you check on your content, it’s very key yeah yeah, so you will untie this dirty content, yeah you’re against it you’re against it.
All right, probably publicist will say. There’s nothing like that: publicity yeah for business yeah so never goes bad or good content. Oh what people will presume or receive, but yeah it doesn’t really matter. Publicists will say: publicity is publicity. You you have anything against this. That is cheap publicity. According to you, yeah, you need to go for the expensive good. It won’t be desperate, shows desperation, anything all right, wonderful, so back to your company now so the services you offer yeah so far.
If I was to tell you give me a list or a brief bio of the substance you offer as a company, so people can get to understand what a digital marketing company okay! So it’s a digital marketing agency, so we are blog. So I basically do digital marketing and also more social media. So I manage the social media platforms on your behalf for your business. You know, let me say, like a Safaricom, you know we are various guys that do they they things at the back end.
People respond to us and now they are very like they try to engage you the audience. What I was talking about, like you, let me say, like somebody answers you replies with you, a more that’s laughs, and even people like that, so you manage such people. Social media planners – and you know it so – yeah yeah content creation want education, yeah all right so, which leads to my next question. Yeah say: I’m a brand yeah and another company is managing my social media.
Don’t you feel like there’s a mess between me and the people? I should be connected with they’ll. Be a mess. They’ll miss something yeah somehow, but you can do do everything yourself you, you must have a team to work with, gets to a point where you can do it. Yes, of course, and also like somebody who understand what it takes. Because, let me say you you. Sometimes you are not able to do that, so you get the right people to do it right as a digital marketing company.
What are some of the steps you take to make it as as possible as possible, even though it’s not by talking to the fans? Okay, he like that talking about also some of those that I’m trying to be unique. Yeah most you trying to be unique, yeah, wonderful man just give them your social media and also you can follow me across it. So we are blogs, and also log on to be a blog, that Yeah right uh-huh. So here is what we speculate and predict the future.
What is how the future trends you have seen in in digital marketing, digital marketing? You should be prepared for, like some skills that are ok. You are not going to be happen in 2020, just leave the villain, ok, so Facebook has become a marketplace and every business they are running into Facebook. They are doing promotions. So very many we put the check and Facebook and also what’s up, is rising at all so soon we’ll get marketing.
Also, even you know, what’s up statuses, so yeah so yeah yeah. So let me say: if you have 500 contacts, make good use of the contacts you can do marketing on, so only your words upset us. Let me say you have an event you can share and be sure one or two people may turn up. So don’t think that we can separate us wonderful, so what’s up is something to read out for what’s up here, Facebook is going to be a market.
If actually it is a market, it’s already a market yeah. What do you mean when you say marketplace? People are buying and selling goods what I mean by marketplace everybody’s on Facebook event, my show she’s on Facebook, so even the mom imboca are today as she’s able to log in and check so maybe if she sees something, maybe because she can decide to buy something On Facebook, so that is what I mean all right yeah, so she can see something really here, so it doesn’t be narrow down.
Yeah everybody very useful on Facebook. Here this is what you mean yeah. So it’s something to look out for yeah Facebook, if you’re not on Facebook and if you’re not doing your business will face me meat, basically business, basically business what’s up is a that is going to be your hands man. I think you mentioned Instagram or say I don’t know Instagram so has Instagram also Instagram stories yeah.
That is also some other things that are rising Instagram stories, some of things, and it is the best platform to engage with you with your audience. Your followers yeah yeah. Thank you very much, mr. Bullocks, as we wrap this up, I know you guys from business school unite and your conversation with boots. In short, a be testing is just a way for you to test two versions or more of a specific page on your website. In order to try to figure out how you can convert and make your users or help your users more correctly achieve the goal, so you know a create more sales, maybe as that goal or fill up more forms or stuff like that, so basically trying to test Out different versions of your pages of your coding of your design in order to have your users convert better and you be able to achieve your business goals and better way, so pretty straightforward.
So what we did before we dive into how to actually set it up. What we wanted to test out is this, this one page and this battery priceless page and what our actual goal is is to have people actually from the price list. Click on start here and actually move forward in in order to purchase a battery. So what we did is we created one very simple change, which is: this is the original page and what we did on these is test pages.
We enlarged this start here button in order to gather more attention in to actually get more clicks. So our goal is to actually gather more clicks. If you see on our new page, the button is basically larger, so we did one simple change not much to it. So, basically, now what we need to do is we need to add one more thing before we set it up and what we want to do is set up some kind of basically some event tracking okay.
So we want to track that someone actually clicks on this button to be able to monitor if the new page is doing better or not okay. So what we’re going to have to do is tag this so step. One is we’re going to have to go to these two pages and tag this specific button. Okay, so what I’m going to do? Actually, I’m just going to take some event tracking code from an existing page, okay and we’re going to copy that okay, so you’re, basically going to add to let’s go all the way to right here.
So what you’re going to want to do is go to the code of the pages and I’ll show you how to do that. Okay! So now we’re on our FTP client right here and I’m going to edit some of the pages so battery battery price list. Let’s go here, and this is our original page with the underscore list at the end and where we have our button, which is this specific button right here start here. Basically, so it’s basically, this specific start here button we’re going to add to the a tag to the link tag, we’re going to add the following event: tracking on click so on click, push track, event, click and then we’re going to call it.
Let’s say the start here start here: battery okay and then yes, as far as it clicks, so that’s kind of the actual value itself. So now we’re going to save this we’re going to do it on the other one as well. Okay, so we’re going to go here, save and we’re going to do it on the new page we created, which is called battery price. Okay, we’re going to do it again here and the same exact event: okay and battery yes, okay, perfect! So now, let’s just test out the pages that they look okay.
This is fine, and this is fine. Okay, perfect, so now that we have that before we go into the actual area, just want to make sure we have our screen sharing. Yes, we do so what we want to do is go to the analytics and set up a goal. First of all, so we know that we’re actually tracking goals and in the a/b testing we’ll be able to actually set up our definition to see to actually monitor so I’m going to go to admin right here and go to goals.
Of course, make sure my domain is select and create a first goal, and this goal will be battery start here. Click on ok, so I know someone actually went to the the start here. Button went to the next page and I’m going to go to event right here and click on Nick so because we added an event of the click. Now, I’m going to actually have to add this information. So if you remember the category and I Caillou pasted it right here – is called click, so I’m going to paste this under category the action is start here and that’s it I mean I can put the label yes, but this should be fine.
Okay, so equals 2 equals 2. No problem now use the event value as the goal value for the conversion. That’s fine. We can keep it and if I click on verify, nothing will show because we just included that, but it’s a good thing to try to verify. Always what you do so, I’m going to click on, create a goal. Ok and the goal name is battery start here. Click on ok! So now we’re ready to start. Of course.
Do you want to test it in everything, but we’re ready to go. So if I go back to the reporting – and I go to the behavior tab right here – into experiments, you’ll get to this page so now he’s here: here’s where we’re actually setting it up. So our a so first of all, you want to put the page. You want to improve the original page, I’m going to copy this. Okay and it’ll give a preview, so you make sure you actually have the right page, which is really nice as preview and I’m going to click on start experimenting.
Ok, now we need to name it. So, let’s call it just a name that is helpful for us just in case we have multiple experiments, so battery price list get start here, clicks. Ok, that’s what we’re trying to do now. A second ago we set up the the event tracking and the goal. So I’m going to go here, go to goal set one and make sure I click on the one that we actually want to track when we actually setup okay, so battery start here clicked on goal number one.
Now we’re going to set up the percentage of traffic to experiment, hundred-percent, email notifications, if something important changes, of course and Advanced Options. We typically don’t touch those, but you can change that. The the setting here a minimum time for experiment the the longer the better. The more traffic you have obviously better will keep it at two weeks and will keep the confidence threshold at what google recommends.
So, let’s click on next okay. So now this is our original page. It looks now we have to insert the new page. We created right here, okay and we’ll call it just variation one. You can name it whatever. You want, maybe variation, one large button or maybe larger button. Okay. Now we can see it. You can compare the small button to the larger one and, let’s click – and here you can add more variations, but right now we just want to do a/b, just two versions: the original versus the new page.
We want to test out okay, so now it shows you again the the previews, it looks fine. The button is here and now we have to go to the actual insertion of code. So if you click on the insertion of code, it says here: okay, please put it in the opening tag at the top of the head tag, so you got to do that definitely has to be above your original Google Analytics code. So, first of all, of course, I’m just going to show you that the regular Analytics code is on the page.
It’s right here. Obviously you need this Analytics code on all of your pages, your original your test and everything. Now what you need to do is copy. This and insert it only on the original page, not on a new test page or anything like that right. So I’m going to copy this and I’m going to insert that to the original page right, the one that we’re trying to make it better right. So I’m going to go here and here’s the head tag, I’m inserting right after the head, I’m going to save it, okay and just make sure that it actually did catch.
Let’s check out code – and it’s here perfect. So now, let’s see if we can move forward. Let’s click on next step and now we’re going to verify that the code is actually implemented. So here it’ll tell you that actually found on the original, both the regular Analytics tracking code and the experimental code, exactly how it asks us and the variation is well found. The regular code, so that’s basically it everything worked out correctly.
All we do here is click on start experiment, and it says here: experiment launch so anytime. You want to actually go to it. You’ll have the status you can edit it. You can pause it stuff, like that and you’ll have some more details. So in another article, when you click on it after a few days a day at 2:00, 3:00 you’ll have some data as far as the goal, the goal percentage of each one, the variation versus the original probability and the conclusions of course.
So that’s it. So we set it up. I hope you guys enjoyed this article and if you guys have any questions with experiments, a B testing we’ll be happy to help. Please you know, comment and ask me any questions be happy to help and we’ll we will be creating more articles about experiments about diagnosing and looking at the actual data and, of course, some blog posts about it. Thank you very much appreciated.
I’r going to assume you know what email marketing is and you’re frustrated. You’ve been sending out sequences and you’re just not sure why people are not opening up your emails, and these are 12 different practices, check them off, make sure you’re doing these 12 and then you should see your email open rates go up if not double number one Is make sure you keep your list cleaned out if you keep sending emails to people who are not opening them, it kind of goes it’s kind of like an algorithm, and the autoresponder is picking up on that, so that they’re, just assuming that what you’re sending isn’t Going to get opened so you’re kind of hurting yourself by continuously sending the people that aren’t interested in what you have and you know not.
Everybody wants the information. You have that’s just a fact of life and by keeping them on your list. Another problem is you’re paying for those emails that are going out after you start getting into the thousands, and your numbers keep getting bigger your fee for the autoresponder goes up according to how much you use it, and if you’re sending out thousands of emails that nobody’s Opening then it’s really just waste of money as well, so you really want to have them removed completely and clean it up now.
One way you can do that in active campaign is active campaign actually will track the emails that don’t open up and it will actually remove them. If you ask it to so, that’s another feature of active campaign that it will automatically do it. Some Auto casado responders require you to go in and take them out by hand and it’s much more cumbersome and time-consuming. So that is a nice feature in the tracking part of active campaign.
Now, let’s look at number two. You want to make sure you don’t over. Deliver and what I mean by that is some people in email marketing say: oh, you should get yourself in front of everybody every single day and you know keep on emailing every single day. If you do, that, think of yourself there’s been people, I’m sure that if he mailed you every single day, you really get tired of seeing their name pop-up.
I had one person that was emailing me and I actually enjoyed their content. I was opening it, but then it was every single day, so it wasn’t a treat anymore. It was like another email. So if you just send two to three times a week and and be a little bit inconsistent, then people go oh there’s an email. I was looking for one I’d really enjoy their content. I pretty much have mine set up to where every 10 days I send roughly four.
So it is probably two to three week. It comes out that way, five every two weeks so, but I’m not consistent in and how many days I skip, I kind of mix it up a little bit, but just stay in front of them, but don’t be in front of them so much that they start Ignoring you and they feel like you’re annoying and number three again do not send the email every day, so I just talked about being in front of them every day and now you want to be consistent, so you want to send emails, but not every day.
Alright number four do not email on weekends. If you start tracking and looking at the algorithms and and your analytics of your emails, you’re going to notice that most people do not open them on the weekends Friday Saturday, Sunday pretty much skip those three days and only send between 11:30 to about 2:30 Monday through Thursday you’ll find that those are the best times that people will open up their emails and, if you think about it, that’s when people are usually at work and they’re, you know they’ve got the work done: they’re sittin there, maybe they’re getting ready to go to lunch And they’ll start checking their emails and there you are don’t sell in every mean email.
This is number five out of 12. If you sell something in every single email again, I’ve had people. I’ve enjoyed their content, but then it was like okay. What are you trying to sell me and if people you know spread that out, there’s the 80/20 rule if 80 percent of the time you’re just sending content good, valuable content, 20 % of the time you’re trying to offer them a tool or sell them. Something then you’ll find that that’s a good balance number six make sure you segment and tag your emails.
And what do I mean by this, even though you might not understand how to use it or how it’s going to benefit you right I’ll, do it anyway and down the road it’s going to help you. So let’s say I send out a lead, magnet and in that lead magnet I am in health and fitness and maybe in this particular lead magnet. I started talking about lifting weights. Maybe it was something I hadn’t been talking about.
I was into nutrition and shakes and maybe just getting out and exercising and moving well all of a sudden, I started talking about weight, lifts or not weight lifting but lifting weights as part of the routine, and so I sent out a free lead, magnet on how To gradually increase the level of your weights – and here are some simple, routine workouts to do – and people got the free lead, magnet they. They were added to my list.
Well, I can tag them weights and later maybe I come across something else. Maybe I want to pull those people that were interested in the weights and send them just specific information like a campaign and not part of the continuous email sequence and campaigns are more like special groups of emails. That are more specific and I can pull them really fast. These are all the people that liked to talk about weights and here’s a new workout program that I actually found that I could offer to them and sell to them as an affiliate program, so tag them segment them based on interests based on why they’re getting on Your list, so, even though everybody on my list might be interested in starting a business, not every single person per se might want to start an affiliate marketing business.
Maybe some of them are interested in my email, marketing and and maybe some other things that all businesses need, but I can tag them the people that specifically want affiliate marketing. I can cater to them a little bit in more depth than the people that wanted. Some of the other information – if that makes sense, alright number 7, ask questions so that you get responses in your email. It actually increases deliverability.
So if I ask people specific questions and they respond, that’s kind of like having engagement on social media, if you think about it, when you post on Facebook and people respond – and you have all that engagement, your ratings kind of go up. Well, it works’we an email when you’re responding and engaging that kind of puts you up a little bit and you’ll get those emails. We’ll definitely go, have more deliverability rates in into the email boxes.
All right number, eight use stories and the reason you want to use stories is you want people to get to know you and your stories and how they relate to different, analogies and things that you’re telling people don’t always want to just be talked to, and you Know if I, if I wrote an email to you and said, oh, I love these weights and this is a routine I started doing you got to try it as opposed to telling the story of how you know.
I got tired of just walking every day. I wanted to up it a little bit and I felt like I was too old, but I started out with two pounds and I even sat in my chair and you know tell a funny story. I mean: could you imagine someone sitting in a chair with two pound weights? It’s it’s kind of a visual, that’s ridiculous, because two pounds are not much, but it happens, and actually I did do that but um and then how I built all the way up to twelve pounds and I feel so much stronger.
And it took me this much time, but you can tell that story and and tell these success that went with it and then people were like wow. If she can do that, and she wasn’t embarrassed to start with two pounds and sitting in a chair, then that’s something I can do so tell a story and it just makes it more relatable number nine and you will hope that one day you will have this Problem but warm up the IP, and what does that mean? If you have a list of emails like a hundred thousand, you cannot send all hundred thousand emails at once.
It’ll, look like spam and autoresponders do not like them. So one of the things you can do is send out your emails in 5000 increments, so you might send them out every so many minutes or every so much time in between and just kind of warm it up, and then that way it doesn’t look like spam. Now I know some people when they start getting those huge numbers, they will actually go out and use two different autoresponders just in case one shuts down.
They always have the other one that will keep working, because the the bread-and-butter of your business is you in a list. I just got an email from somebody that an influencer I’m on their email list, and they just mentioned how they just lost their account on Facebook. It was shut down, 25,000 people were following them on there and it just got shut down out of the blue, but they have an email list.
So you have to make sure you build this email list now you might say well what if the autoresponder gets shut down? Well, it can, but you can also export those email names. Every so often make sure you export your list and you keep that in a safe place and if it does get shut down, you have that list. You can import it into another autoresponder and that’s how you own it number 10 make sure people can unsubscribe to your list and what and I know legally, you have to do that.
But have you ever tried to unsubscribe to somebody’s list only to find out they’re still sending you emails? I can name somebody right now. I know I’m on their list like four times I’ve readed them I’ve. It’s an influencer. I’ve signed up for a couple things and I noticed every single time. I click a button icon the list new again, even though I keep using the same email address. So I’m sure if I unsubscribe I’m going to have to unsubscribe two or three more times so make sure your button works and make sure that people aren’t getting duplicated into your list.
My list I have it set up where they can only come in once under one email and the system will pick it up if it’s a duplicate so that they won’t be on several lists all right number. Eleven, we have two left make sure you always have a call to action. Now you might say: well, you just told me not to sell something. Every time will call to action doesn’t mean to always sell something. Your call to action can be hey click, this link.
If you would like to try this autoresponder, which I do have a link below so there’s your call to action. I could also be promoting my new Facebook group click. The link call to action I could promote. I could ask a question and ask you to respond to something: that’s a call to action, so see how the call to action does not have to be selling something, but I’m asking you to do something. I could just simply ask you: hey, give me a thumbs up if this was helpful or make a comment in the chat, the the comments below and let me know what you think those are call to actions subscribe to.
My blog, that’s a call to action. I hope you heard all of those I just gave you about six call to actions pick one at least alright number 12. This is the last one, and this is what is really important, especially if you’re new don’t use swipe files now. What does that mean? If you signed up to become an affiliate marketer when you go to clickbank, and you find that item that you want to sell, they give you all their files like swipe files and emails like that.
You can just take them and copy and paste them in and it sounds enticing and it sounds wonderful when you’re new because you’re like I don’t know what to do. But if you use exactly what they give you it’s called a swipe file. Then so is everybody else and it’s going to be picked up as spam, because a lot of people are using that same one and even if it doesn’t get picked up, it doesn’t really say who you are.
So, let’s say you did five emails. We call the soap opera sequence when you’re introducing yourself and warming up to your audience, those first few emails and then all of a sudden. You have a swipe file and it totally does not represent who you are they’re, not using the same language, they’re, not using the same vocabulary or anything, and it just really throws things off. What I suggest you do is look at that file.
Take it and edit it, you can still take that information, use it as a guide and make it become you put yourself in there. You could even start it out with a story and that really warms up your audience and lets them see that you’re consistent in your emails, so I just gave you 12 different ways that you could best practices for your email. Hopefully, one of those will be something you weren’t doing and you can start using that back best practice and get those emails to get open.
You already heard all of my call to actions give me the thumbs up the subscribe all that stuff, but um. You know how it works I do have. This is my real collection. I do have some playlists about email, marketing and I’ve got the link below if you’re, really digging in and trying to get your email marketing up and running. I have some articles that I made, and I put them together in an ending list.
Playlist and the link is below so definitely check that out. So that’ll help you with them with your email list.
What, if you voluntarily guest blog for a big website to improve your career? Do you own the copyright to those blogs? Hopefully this article will point you in the right direction in under 3 minutes. You think I can do it. My name is Katrina and I’m from new media rights, we’re a non-profit legal clinic that helps consumers, entrepreneurs and other creative people understand legal issues.
If you’re an employee with a salary and a desk at an office and all that stuff, then you most likely don’t own the copyright to the blog’s that you write, especially if you are hired specifically to write blogs for them. If you’re a freelancer who works at home on your own time, who gets paid per article you’re, probably an independent contractor, this means you probably own, the blog’s you write, but not so fast.
You might be under contract that limits or completely removes your copyright interest to the blog posts you write practically. This means that if you sign a contract like this, you couldn’t just compile all of your posts into a book one day and sell it without everyone. Else’s permission: let’s assume that you signed in an agreement in order to figure out, if you own your posts or not, you should figure out what type of agreement it is.
Generally, it’s one of three number one: it could be an assignment agreement. An assignment agreement usually means you give up all of your rights to the work forever and ever and ever and number two. It could be a license agreement. A license agreement limits your rights, but doesn’t take them all away. For example, your employer could be allowed to republish your work, but you can publish it in other places.
Number three: it could be an employment agreement. An employment agreement dictates the terms of your employment. Sometimes, in addition to telling you all the things you can and can’t do, while at work, they contain assignment clauses or license clauses that you should look for also if it is a valid employment agreement that means you’re most likely an employee. Therefore you probably don’t own. Your blogs, anyway, this is all a simplification.
So if you have a contract in place, you may want to see a lawyer who can figure out just what rights you do have to work. We can do that for you for free at new media rights, but for us to help people like you and keep making these informative articles. We need donations, you can donate on our YouTube blog or at new media rights org. If you’d, like whitshire, like you to happy blogging,
I know I’m proud of you yeah, like your second workout this week, great okay, so obviously I’m still working out officially seven months pregnant this week, twenty-eight weeks third trimester. What’s on the agenda today more work and then everything else related yeah yeah. In a way, I’m doing taxes which will didn’t give me more money to do things on the house. That’s true! That’s fun! No! No! So we’re going to work on that today, I figure out what we’re going to have for dinner.
I’r trying to plan meals a little bit better, so we’re going to do that, go to the store and then I’ve got some online client work. So yeah, that’s that’s our day to day work taxes, food TV, /, sit in bed and do nothing time. Always that’s a given well, first coffee and coffee ran out, of course anything pity yeah, that’s all cleared out over there, but that’s not the way that the cars me running down because we’re trying make a pass for the car tube.
So I guess the the truck can either come behind the house, which is there or there’s actually the a big path right through here, just a little bumpier until you get to like right where you’re standing come on this way, let’s see okay, so we can actually Go up in there now too, not that we need to. Let you see this see how the you smell that and see all the butterflies look at this tree. You know there’s a ton of bees on there too, but look at that they’re pulling all the pollen and stuff from this.
It’s like white flowers growing on this thing. This is right in our backyard, but they keep coming this way. Let’s see if you can drive all the way through here, let cut down all those Cedars for more fence posts. So those are me nice. I know there’s some deer over there, everything Brady Brady are you going to cross over there we go and we’re still going to weed eat. This whole area just keeps growing.
I think a little pathway all through here and then cows walked by here certain times. One of those things that balloon, my D is a get this smooth enough where we can make it a running trail Amy. When I ran yeah well, you can actually bike. It. That’d be a lot easier. Your bike is good enough for this, and then these are possibly chairs and a table and there’s actually more over there and we’re going to take it all the way back through there too, because there’s actually only Cedars all through there.
And then this cactus on the left side – oh they just burned, they didn’t really do any like. This is all clear. Already yeah, there’s already grass growing, that’s pretty cool. This is where the story ends so yeah. It goes back another weight like 200 feet or so before it starts curving back that way, and they can expect to the house. Are you guys until before my camera dies, I’m going to show y’all really quick? I know we haven’t talked about the care packages in a while, so it’s going to update y’all on what we have for this month’s.
I just finished out three. I’ve got one sitting here ready and then I’ve just finished out three more care packages. So, if you guys don’t know what the care packages are, if you’re new to this blog or you just haven’t, heard us talk about them, what we’ve been doing for about two years now, thanks to the help of you guys on patreon, is we put together what I call care packages for the homeless, so since we move around a lot, we tend to run across a lot of people that are on the street and being so close to Austin and going to us and quite often there’s a ton of people that just I I see it as needing compassion and love and it’s a whole other topic in its own.
But I’m I’m a huge advocate of just doing every a little bit that you can to make a difference in this world and sometimes a very, very simple gesture can make all of the difference in the world to somebody else. So we started with the ziplock baggies and I would put in like a snack, a water bottle, a toothbrush and some socks or something super super simple. We talked about it on the blog years ago, back whenever it was a Fitness blog, and it was just a large Ziploc baggie that I we would have in the car and I would hand out as we’re driving around if whoever came across anybody.
If we’re walking downtown Austin, I would just carry a couple with me and just okay, so it did die but real, quick before knives again for the pet care packages. I’r just going to show you off: we’ve got our lovely blanket and the weather has been so random here in Texas. It was 70, probably upper 70s yesterday, and then we woke up this morning. It was 42, so I never know you can always be prepared.
So also we have tissues, we’ve got a little toothbrush. Dental kit, refreshing hand, wipes refreshing is key. Sunscreen, some Wheat, Thins snacks, and I try to get some just easily transportable non perishable things that don’t require cooking. So just a lot of crackers and peanut butter type in bars, and then these little travel first aid kits we’ve got some electrolyte waters and socks which these are five packs.
I say this time and time again and in case anybody needs to hear it socks. Are they have been called hobo gold, the guys that we gave a care package to one time? Apparently, socks are some of the most appreciated items that you can give to people on the street so and then, along with that, we’ve got a ton of these lira, bars ton of peanut butter crackers and then a couple little travel-size, my neck size trail mixes.
So that’s what’s in all of these care packages right now, I’ve got four ready to go and yeah we’re going to get these out. Hopefully, hopefully this week, every now and then I’ll get questions from people on where to start. If they want to do something like this, because they see us doing backpacks and all of these big items and it gets kind of overwhelming, but what I tell them is just start with what you can just like.
I said having that Ziploc with just various little items can make all the difference in the world, and I have yet to have anybody turn these down. It’s it’s. It’s kind of heartbreaking whenever we pass these out, because you have this super short interaction with this person, and I don’t know them, they don’t know us and we basically what I’ll do is I’ll roll down the window. It’s usually at a stoplight I’ll roll down the window or I’ll.
Ask him: hey: we’ve got we’ve got these backpacks they’ve got snacks, they’ve got water, they’ve got some essentials in them. Would you like one and they’re usually kind of taken aback by it, because I don’t think that they expect it and Matt’s gotten a hug before I’m freaking out one of these? It’s just it’s! It’s very heartwarming, but it’s also heartbreaking at the same time, because to see somebody so moved by something as simple as socks.
It really kind of reminds you of what’s important in this life, so I always just encourage people do what you can. I know a lot of people don’t like to give money, and that’s you know you don’t you don’t have to if anything, just a smile can sometimes be encouraging for somebody else. You know these are these are people just like us, and I know that there’s there’s a lot of people that might be on the streets for good reason, but the worst thing that this can bring is is just a reminder to them that they are cared for By somebody and so yeah, as if block Maggie, just fill it with a couple random items, you know water, oh man, what too bumpy for you? No, he doesn’t step in he peed into it.
Let me tell you how hey guys I know I look like from scholars right now very high in the air back from London, headed to a York City Expressway a article, so many of you are stuck and can’t start.
I broke it down into that. What how and where right whw right like what are you going to talk about, but the way all of you need to do this and how you actually start is by doing you ever done anything, yet you know this whole fake it till you make. It brings. No value to anybody, you need to make something, and that thing is a manifesto. It’s always been obvious. It’s always been obvious. What causes success? What I needed to do you know every time I read content the internet web television readed, opening the other night was responsible.
Is working she’s interviewed George Lucas, something seeing the same shit. We took it to all the studios, every single one of them and nobody wanted it. So what you do so I said: well, I’m not going to give up now. You’re stuck you haven’t, started cuz you’re stuck, I think, you’re of using trumps the excitement of victory for so many people. So here you go what what I’m going to talk about? What do you want to be known for? Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself: what do I want to do every day for the rest of my life? Do that and see what people need to understand is the way we communicate today is so different and the platforms have been redefined.
You want to be in health and fitness, you want to be in strategy, you want to in social media, you want to be and sneakers you want to be in coffee. You want to be in electronics, you want to be in in fashion york like smurfs smurfs. It up, you can make seventy thousand dollars a year talking about the smooth, whether that’s your mission or where you’re at right. Now your truth manifesto tell me what you’re thinking about it like if somebody made a article eight years ago that I think fashion should be high low.
I think people should wear expensive, stuff and inexpensive stuff in one wardrobe. They would have been like the queen or king of the vision of the fashion industry, just by making a article for the thing that facebook why your Instagram, like facebook’s, going to buy instagram four months later it happens. So I was on Piers Morgan, this company’s 550 days old, how the hell is it worth a billion dollars and my opening line is they stole it? And then I guess, last year, this time right, facebook bought whatsapp for 18 billion, and every article like the next day after the news came out is like oh wait a minute.
They fucking stole Instagram the. How is there’s only a certain few ways to communicate in the world whether this is article form something extreme yeah like just get on a train and go away for a week or something different? You have to break pattern whether this is audio form sitting here. Listening to my music list and I’m starting to find a little clarity, audio being a podcast you’re, an outspoken advocate for both hustle with self-awareness yeah.
So if you had to put them in order, even if it’s a 1a and one sample in self-awareness, not important when you know her, you, yes, when you know who you are hustle sexier yeah like it would have been cooler for, like the people. Listening for me to say, hustle, because it’s cooler right heck, you mean of do podcast, put the record on your phone and just speak your truth as I sit here right now, writing this article or at least mellowing it, because that’s how I do it get in Front of a camera to Southeast out, you know I’m old, now, kids, at 40, I’ve observed a lot to tell you that optimism and positive is a huge variable.
Good morning. Instagram me Gary. Instead of a motivational quote or some sort of collapse, one of those tamanna fees tell you all the guys, their attention thumbs up on the tripod or have a d-rock, your nephew or sister, making me this is real quick you can in turn is here. Somebody guys might remember him or you write it, but the way all of you need to do this and how you actually start is. By doing I create an obnoxious amount of content because you’re the strategy of how we do it don’t do anything.
Just keep. Reading keep reading my stuff keep being entertained by my energy. Keep being inspired, don’t do don’t look and have dinner at seven o’clock and 22 years like when your strategy is right, you win, and so we have figured out that pillar content creates content underneath it at scale. Everybody welcome to the first hashtag askgaryvee. I think it’s the first one, but I actually do think I tried to do this once before.
I feel like I’ve got the team now in place to actually do this more often to macro patients macro patience, my patients you’ve got a deploy. Patients you’ve got to love the process, what’s the ROI of social media, so I look at her ago. What’s the ROI of your mother, there are so many people in here that shouldn’t be producing article, because that is not the best way they communicate only a decade ago, as I was speaking here, all I would be talking about is blogging.
Yet there are people in this room that are caught up by picture and article communication and they are tremendous writers and they don’t realize that blogging or posting on medium or even my favorite little hack. Right now, if you’re a good writer – and you want to build up a profile for your business or for yourself, I actually highly recommend you start blogging inside of Facebook and Instagram, I literally mean writing seven.
Fifteen twenty five sentences. Three four five paragraphs word: a written content within your feeds that people will absolutely consumed. So that’s number one and two know what and and how right like. How are you going to do it and then we’re distribution? That’s that’s what you need to figure out next and it’s the hardest part for a lot of you hardest part is to start the next hardest. Binlog things are hard hard to start hard to know what format do it in audio written article and the number three? How do you get people to see it all goes down in the DM which key is providing other people more value? I just don’t see people doing it, it blows me away and it is absolutely wonderful and it is absolutely going down on Instagram DM influencers where you pay for it even pay in facebook ads Instagram a sponsorship deals youtube pre-rolls against people of those interests fashion.
You know feed line, sneakers technology or or you reach out to people that have audiences urge hashtags click them look at. The account then see how you can bring them values, DM them go and soft, bring value, rinse and repeat: 10, three or five thousand times. So the thing maybe should do is go upper east side doesn’t get. This guy looks like it took picture Haji Instagram influencers right now today, for doers is the probably, but only behind facebook, ads the single best arbitrage in marketing and then then try and then you learn when you’re a pioneer you have to taste it.
There’s no report. There’s no white paper, there’s no modeling mixed metrics that are going to teach you how that’s going to work when you’re the first explorer. You have to taste the berries and hopefully they’re, not poisonous we’re living through this incredible era of massive opportunity. Yet everybody’s talking and reading and nobody’s fucking doing start fucking executing. So what does that mean? That means you should write a medium blog post every week, content podcast article written, quotes, pictures and then tactics.
What scares me quite a bit is that most of you, when you see these logos, you think of a piece of content that you make and you think of those five blogs and more as places where you distribute it. Twitter and Facebook are tools. Twitter and Facebook are markers and crayons right, no fax machine. These are not just distribution blogs. These are blogs where you have the natively story, tell Facebook youtube and instagram or ABC NBC and CBS, and what I figured out for last decade is how to make mash and the end with and show, and he are inside.
Though, and my question is, how do I also and stop being a pussy metemma, I want to do where you are go. What’s lacking you some, I don’t know other people’s POV come on man classic style. Yes, yes, please take a step back and think about how awesome it actually is.
