That’s where the money is. That’s where the money is because that’s where the economy is going right now in this article, I’m going to share with you some digital marketing skills. Okay, there are four of these articles. They all go together. I want you to read all over this part. 1 part 2, part 3 and part 4, and it’s going to walk you through all.
You need to know for doing digital marketing courses. Okay. So this is a great setup, you’re really going to like it’s easy to follow but make sure you go through the entire four article series. This is article 1. Don’t forget: there’s 2 3 & 4. Now, let’s get going so you can make some money online. Hey! I’r jr. Fish I’ve been selling online since 2009. I’ve sold millions of dollars of both digital and physical products, and this is your blog.
Yes, it is because I make these articles to help you out to help. You start run and grow online businesses don’t forget to subscribe. There hit that subscribe button. Next to it. The Bell hit the bell ring the bell. Why? Well, because that way, I cannotify you every single time. I do a article you don’t miss out on a single thing: you’re notified you’re special, your VIP you’re part of the Fisher family.
You know you want that. Alright, let’s get going here. Let’s talk about digital marketing and this is really going to make it so simple for you so easy for you you’re going to get it. So, let’s get going ciao digital marketing. Really it’s just a new fancy buzzword! Ok! This has been going on for a long time. How long you say? Well, you know, I guess it’s since the 90s – maybe the 1990s nope I’m going to go back even further, like I’m going to go back real far like over a hundred years ago, digital marketing and you’re saying wait.
Junior there was no internet, I’m aware, but let me talk to you about something yeah, I’m going to put up on the screen, the first digital marketer in history. You know who this guy is. Do you recognize him? His name is Mark honey. I was going to try to pronounce his first name. I just not good at that white mark honey yeah. In 1896 he was the first human to demonstrate a public transmission of a wireless signal.
This dude he invented the radio now as soon as he did. This, of course everybody started doing it. They all started figured out. They started doing Morse code signals. Now it took another 10 years for the radio to really reach the general public, but it didn’t take long for the creators to figure out. They could use it to sell stuff. The first live broadcast was from an opera performance at the Met.
Now guess what happened right after that people bought tickets, digital marketing and digital marketing was born now they didn’t call it that back then, but that’s certainly what it was now, but you’re a little bit surprised. I didn’t mention cell phones, I didn’t mention Facebook ads or Google ads or u2 ads or any of that stuff, because digital marketing has nothing to do with the internet. If you’re, if you’re wondering what digital marketing really is, it’s just advertising.
That’s delivered through a digital blog, that’s it it’s that simple! Now, certainly you know social media and mobile applications and YouTube, and Facebook and Twitter are all digital platforms, but that isn’t what defines digital marketing? Basically you could you could narrow it down to digital marketing? Is any form of marketing products or services that involves electronic devices? Now get a ask yourself, a question: why is digital marketing so important? Why is it so important you remember billboards those things alongside the highway? I do.
Does anybody look at those anymore? I don’t think they do, I remember being on car trips as a kid with my family and we would drive down to Florida. We had a camper and we would try to find someplace to eat and when we were trying to find someplace to eat. My dad would say to me we’ll check for billboards and we’ll see what’s coming up, and that was the way we got our information. You know once I saw a billboard for McDonald’s, but I saw a billboard for Stuckey’s or whatever it was, or a barbecue joint I’d say: oh look, four miles, there’s going to be a barbecue place and then there’d be another billboard.
It would say three miles. Barbecue place and then it would say, a half a mile barbecue place and we knew to get off at that exit nowadays. What do we do? We grab our phone, we go to Yelp, we go to Google, we type in restaurants. We finally closest places around and we go there. Do those billboards persuade us to do anything anymore? I don’t think so. I don’t think anybody’s looking at him, because most of people drive down the interest rate, although they’re not supposed to be are looking at their phones.
They’re, actually looking at their phones, I mean, if you just stand by an interstate and read people drive by you’ll, find a lot of people looking at their phone. Now, it’s dangerous you shouldn’t. Do it bad thing to do, but I promise you they’re not looking at billboards and even if they do think about this guy’s, if they see a billboard and they go okay, there’s a McDonald’s at the next intersection, I’m going to go there.
How does McDonald’s know that that billboard worked? They don’t is the answer so they’re not effective either. Now the truth is they’re still billboards out there and they’re, probably all around your house – and I bet you don’t even know what they say, because you don’t look at them, but there’s still people wasting money on billboards. Amazing. In some studies it’s been proven that 94 % of the people driving down the road are on their cellphone dangerous.
Now it’s going to get worse and I’ll. Tell you why it’s going to get worse because we’re going to have self-driving cars, you know, Elon Musk is working on this now, and some of these cars are actually on the roads right now and they’re going to get more and more intuitive. I think they’re really going to make the road safer, because I’ve seen how some people driving just my neighborhood but they’re, going to be out there.
So if the car is going to be doing more of the task for you, I guarantee you that those people’s attention is going to be elsewhere and it’s not going to be on the road. It’s not going to be on the billboards. That’s for sure. So what does this mean for you? This means that you need to learn digital marketing, there’s a huge market there guys and a lot of people are going to say. I just don’t understand that.
I don’t know it, but somebody like you is going to learn it. You’re going to read my articles you’re going to learn how to do this stuff you’re going to make money. Now I’ve been to a lot of meetings and the internet has really changed lives. It really has – and I know, there’s there’s some people. I talked to that. It hasn’t changed their lives and it’s a shame because they’ll say well, I’m not into all that technical stuff, I’m not online, I’m not on Facebook.
I don’t put my credit card online. I don’t do any of that, and it’s really just sheer ignorance, because technology is here to help you. Okay, if you don’t use technology, you have a decided disadvantage over the rest of the world because it automates things for them. You may not like certain things about it. I know I’ve had a lot of customers that are survival, food come and say. Well, I don’t want to put my credit card on online.
I’d rather call you, so they call us and I go online and I put their credit card because that’s how we have to do it. Your credit card is going online. You’ve got to understand that your credit cards going online, okay and what’s more dangerous, putting it online on a secure site like ours or handing it to a waitress in arrest, stron, and let them see your credit card numbers where they could jot down everything and use It within the next hour I mean they literally, could guys.
So if you’re handing out your credit card number to strangers in a restaurant, why would you not put it online on a secure site where nobody can see it? It just makes no sense to me. So this technology thing this digital marketing thing is an opportunity for you to make a tremendous amount of money. If you are the early adopters, okay and you may say: well, it’s too late, there’s already people to know how to do that.
There’s not enough people that know how to do that. Trust me. If I talked to friends and family members, I would bet 99 % of them. Don’t know what I know about it and ten years ago I didn’t know that I just learned it, so you can too so follow-through. I want you to go through all four of these articles. The next article I’m going to cover the skills that you’re going to need the things that you’re going to need to learn.
You know honestly. Internet marketing, digital marketing is the reason that there are 25 year old people who can sit on their couch in their living room and make two million dollars a year. Yeah there’s people doing that. Okay and if you’re not looking at that going. Why not me, then? You’re missing the boat and I don’t care how old you are. I don’t care if you’re 18, I don’t care if you’re 80. Anybody can learn this stuff guys it’s not that hard.
It’s just the fear of not knowing just just dive in read all four of these articles. Four in a row, this is the first one there’s going to be three more and I’m going to jump into the skills you’re going to need in the next one and you’re going to love us you’re, going to come out of this you’re going to be motivated. You’re going to want to do this stuff, you couldn’t want to make money. I really appreciate you listening to this article, don’t forget to subscribe.
There’s a big subscribe button down. There, don’t miss it! Okay, so I hope I’ve got you convinced in this article. Okay, guys you’ll be part of the VIP group, the Fisher family. Okay, don’t forget to put comments. Like I said in the beginning of this article, this blog is not my blog. I don’t own it, okay, you do you put comments there. You tell me what you want to see articles made on and then I do it. So you actually control the direction of this blog. With your comments, if you don’t comment, I don’t know, and you don’t get what you want.

I don’t know if you all know where that is it’s the southernmost city in California. I came here to share some practical marketing tips with you guys. So one of the main problems that I generally run into with people in the software industry is they have the ability to code, not a bad thing, but the problem to actually get people to use their software or contribute to their software becomes a problem for them To be able to grow any scalable amount, so what that comes down to is going to be that you need to make people informed about what you have what you have to offer.
So we’re going to talk today about what is your software? The customer journey that is spent as the new user comes to discover your open source or whatever product types of marketing options. You can do to get people to become informed of your software and then some practical steps and action items you can take home. So I want you to think of software that you use every day or maybe you are contributing to you here in the open-source community.
You can’t think of anything specifically think of a bunt or maybe your favorite application on a bunt ooh. Now, if somebody asks you, what does your software do answer that in your mind, right now, thank to yourself. So someone says what does the bunt to do? What is your answer generally going to be someone if no one answers, it’s no one raised their hand. I’r going to call on someone just point at you: what is it fun to do partially? So what you want to do when answering the question to any prospective person after you develop software? What does your software do is solving a problem? You need to be able to make sure that when you tell us buddy what your software is doing, that you’re producing is the problem that it solves.
Think of any major tech company in the world and users are using their product not based on exactly what it does, but based on the problems that it solves people take rideshare apps people use Airbnb people take certain opportunities from certain apps people use certain pieces of Software because it enhances their life and solves a problem that they have, and so what you need to do is figure out what that problem is that you are solving with your software measure, who needs to use it contact them and repeat that information.
What you’re going to get with something like this, when you do measure contact repeat, is a term that is called North Star metric if you’re going to take anything from that write that down North Star metric, what that is, is the measurable actionable definable metric? You can use to get more users onto your software so from there there’s multiple methods you can do, which is going to get people using your software um, and so one of the first methods is, you can do low cost advertising um so, and you can run These in a pretty simple low cost way.
I have some companies that I run advertising for on Facebook and Google at about 55 cents per click. You can convert from US dollars in your head and Google Ads at about a dollar and a half per click and with Google advertising. If you are a non-profit or your software community group, what have you is a non-profit in a vast majority of countries? You actually can qualify for free ad credit. I know in the US you get about ten thousand dollars a month in free ad credit, if you’re a non-profit and you fill out a form called a 501c3 to do that.
It’s different in every country. Google has their list of things. I can point that out to you, after the talk, it’s pretty pretty good Facebook has that and you can set up some fairly basic general specifications for that, and you can get much more in depth with who you’re targeting who you’re marketing to and where they come From with Facebook, I can talk to you about that after the presentation, which is something that is worth considering, and that’s something that you want to look into, and additionally, you can look into many other avenues.
You think are worth it, but a lot of the other larger internet companies. You have to have a lot of budget to spend these things. You can spend five dollars a day on all of these websites right here on your own for your own local community. Even you can have it to be where someone searches, Lubuntu, Lisbon and automatically the Loko page is going to audit, be the first thing that comes up. It’s going to be pretty affordable too, because I highly doubt anyone else is bidding on those types of things too.
So that’s worth considering, so what you want to do, additional, I already mentioned nonprofit ads – are basically going to be free. That’s the website! You want to go to change your pictures and your copy regularly, because we all know we’ve been on Twitter, Facebook and whatever, and we see the same advertisement for six months straight and we don’t care at that point and then you’re just wasting your money.
Um edition. The other thing you can do is called content marketing with blogs. So what I mean by that specifically, is you need to write content that is going to again solve a problem. Your article title needs to be something of item. We have that we are marketing. We are selling you solving the problem, so what that can be is anything from how you bun to enhances this part. How listening to music is more enjoyable on it um you can go down and you can start typing some of the more step style blog, which would be four steps.
Five steps to increase your knowledge of Ubuntu five steps to develop this app five steps to write better documentation tip, though, when you see those types of things, if you write or if you put an odd number instead of an even number, you get a higher click Rate means more people going to click on your ad read is interesting. So if you’re trying to write a blog for your loco and you’re putting ten ways you can get involved in the community you’re going to get a lower click rate, I’m not entirely sure.
Why than if you put 11 – and I believe it’s because people think you’re a little more intentional and that number, but you don’t need to tell them you weren’t um SEO is another thing I could talk for hours on which we don’t need to. But basic thing. You need to figure out what keywords people are searching for, and you need to put those in there. You guys know what backlinks are cool. Look that up so backlinks is why you want to be writing a blog in the first place, and what that’s going to do is what that’s going to do is when you write your blog five steps to make a bun to work for you, you put it On your site, companies, people that have websites that are more important than yours are going to read them and link them back on their site on their social media and that’s going to rank you higher in Google search engine optimization algorithm.
This is also a great place for community input, and what I mean by that is your: you have a lot of people that are not technical, probably wanting to help out with your community or a lot of people that um are just general users looking for some Way to share the stuff that they’re doing community input to have them write, a blog is good. You can go through and you can change the keywords you can make a long-form content, tip long form means um longest form that you can possibly say.
It’s like four to five thousand words is an ideal post for a blog. It might have changed in the past couple months, but what you’re going to want to do is probably make a template for your users. I’ve done that before and then you can get as many people as you want writing from your community various ways to get involved. It might be you, you might be the only person doing it and that kind of sucks for the first few months, but you’re going to find people with your blog that you’re writing to help you start building out your community help more people get involved in your Software, so one of the things that this really enhances is your ability to create more social media, a larger senders.
You may hate social media, Facebook, Twitter, all of them in the like. But that’s where people exist on the internet today to get their attention and that’s where you’re going to grow your user base and that’s where you’re going to be able to find people who have the same interest as you. So my recommendation, if you are, if you have any sort of a community you’re running with social media, is to use a social media management platform um.
What that’s going to allow you to do is make 200 posts in the course of an hour about, of course, of a day and schedule them for every single consecutive hour that you want. This is a good place that you can do sort of testing to where you want to figure out what time of day is going to get more of a open rate on the articles you’re putting and all that sort of stuff, um HootSuite s, — a pretty Sweet example: it’s it doesn’t cost anything for the end.
You can schedule 30 posts at a time and I don’t want to say cost, at least in the states. It’s ten dollars a month for a lot more than that which is fairly affordable for a lot of us. A buffer is pretty good check that out there’s dozens of them at the end of the day, but I can talk with you guys later. If any of you guys want some practical help, and we can look at that at a later time, so one of the more interesting things, though, is once you’re growing out your community, your product, your user base, whatever software you have it, this is intentionally somewhat broad.
Is you’re going to get important people that you want to get more information you’re going to want to start emailing um? How many of you guys, like email, lists, cool um? So what I like about email lists is not inherently as an amazing way to get. The word out for your information: you can but half the time. It just goes to people’s spam folders these days, but it gives you emails that then you can run back and filter for your advertisements, so you can take those emails and you put it in your EULA that you’re going to advertise to them and let them know Some of the actions that you’re doing in your software – or you can take that and you can make what’s called a Facebook look-alike audience and then you take Facebook’s ad metrics and then it filters and targets people with similar interests or the people that are signing up To your email list, if you have it at a large enough database and that’s pretty cool if you’re into that, so where then another thing to consider, it’s called influencer marketing, if you guys have never heard of that, it’s pretty basic um find community members that are Important in your community to start working on this, you may have famous people in your community that you don’t need to know using your software that you’re producing, if you’re small-time, probably a knop.
But I guarantee there’s people who are famous outside of a bun too using the bun to that. Don’t talk about it track. Those types of people down that live in your city. Have them shoot out a tweet write, a blog put their name on it and share it. More people are going to read it and they’d probably be willing to do it. Something that’s worth considering. I probably completely forget those types of people um email tip is.
I had you drift campaigns. You can look into those which is essentially that’s more advertising, which is kind of spammy. I wouldn’t recommend that entirely a few guys, but use a tool like MailChimp or SendGrid those types of things. What’s your prettiest think someone just bought SendGrid? I think Twilio bought them actually recently, so I don’t know what they’re doing, but I use MailChimp for most of my and that sets up the availability because you didn’t can see the open and the read rate.
Another thing you want to do because no one wants to spam. Someone spamming people is kind of kind of rude. You can filter all of your emails you’re going to send to your users through something called a spam filter, and that’s going to look for words. What you’re going to spam people and not spam people? My recommendation, though, is to go in your open up your email and look in your spam, folder out the words that those companies are using considerably and just black with the blacklist, those out of your vocabulary.
What is going to create an easier time for you after you get about writing emails on a regular basis, obviously running events important so basic things. So one of the things that I like to do. Obviously events is the culmination of a lot of the stuff. You’ve been working on before if you’re following these things, so you can do workshops that are pretty good, which sets up the availability to sort of be it anything.
You want be that if you’re a lot or a bunch of users group, you can have an install fest like I think, Rudy was talking about here this morning you can set up meetups grab a beer with your friends, whatever you want to call it. Um webinars are good. Just hangout on the Internet is something that I have really worked on attracting and getting set up, and that works really well. How many of you guys go to I mean you guys go to meetups.
Obviously it’s that type of thing, but the point being why you want to run all of these things is because then, when you do these types of information, you have that audience which is going to be likely to want to come to your events, because if all You’re doing is starting off making the event. You have no audience to market it to if you don’t have an audience to market it to because you’re not doing so so, media email and blogging, all you’re going to have is dedicated users.
The same ten people that meet up every single week and just become a group of friends and talk about themselves and that’s fine. That’s fine, don’t get me wrong, but I believe the entire point of growing your technology should be attracting new people, maybe not even the technical people that want to come to this conference, maybe even just people that are interested in using the product as an end user And having no knowledge of what programming is coming to your meetup, which is worth considering um, so where were we, but what you need to figure out when it comes to the software you’re working on and growing? It is something called the customer journey.
Have you guys ever heard that before cool, so the customer journey is a is a new term in business technology that sort of describes what I would call touch points your new user sales, whatever you wanted, not not sales and money, but you could don’t get me Wrong but use it works for that too, to buy into the product that you are producing. So you need to remember awareness, interest, evolution, decision and retention and each one of these boxes.
You can change some different words for it, but it’s going to have and what you need to have tech tech stack. Wise is key performance indicators and what that means is when somebody becomes aware of your technical product, you need to figure out technically on your website at the booth you’re running, how you can, how you can get a hold of that and how you can know that They are now in your pipeline.
If you will, so you can imagine that going from awareness, they see the ad, they see the norm, they see the booth you’re running at in a sort of festival. They see the interest, it tags their interest. They took the flyer home, they go to your website, um there they read the blog post, so you got it, you got to think of it like you, excite you educate and then you sell, and so it the evolution comes the trial of the software.
So don’t think just because they’ve downloaded your software, you have a new user. If you have software downloads, if you have a million software downloads with a 90 percent uninstall rate, that’s probably pretty bad, so ask questions as a community. Maybe they go on! Ask some questions and you’re slack blog, you, our C blog decision and what I mean by decision is they’ve run through the trial. They’ve installed it, it works for them.
That’s not even done yet Jessica, someone installs that doesn’t matter! Think of it too, then only when they are retention and they are retained as a software user of your product does that matter. It’s I mean from a monetary standpoint. They can sign the contract, but unless the money is in the bank it doesn’t matter and they’re not going to the money is not in the bank until they’ve gone ways to become probably what you guys would call community members.
So my recommendation, if it’s an open source product, start giving them jobs to do if it’s not there’s multiples, you go about that, but what you need to figure out as a person, if you have your software product, is what each person what happens along each one Of these journeys for you and how you can figure out a way to track that and make sure that people are going along those steps, Google key performance indicators, it’s actually pretty cool.
However, ideally what you need to have then, so once you track this down it you got to analyze. Determine scale repeat: remember that analyze, so you analyze, you figure out where your user is determine where they came from and where they’re going scale it. You know what scale means and repeat it unless the metric that you can figure out to figure out where your user is coming from is viewable and repeatable and scales, then it’s not worth it.
If it takes you hours to get one user, that’s not going to scale obviously, and so you need to figure out that method for your product that you’re working on so from that action steps for the end of this, we went through multiple methods of things. You can do in email, social media blogging, purchasing advertisements getting free advertisements pick one method. Don’t if anything, I can tell you about marketing any sort of tech infrastructure.
Don’t spin don’t do ten methods poorly, do one method good and invest your infrastructure time into that you’re busy developing the software. You don’t have that much time in the first place, get that set up from there. You need to set up your measurements and you need to repeat this is something that you can in theory, script automate and set up in some sort of a back-end that you can monitor as time goes on, and with that, thank you for coming to the presentation.
I will be around all week for an hour, sorry for our long marketing help I’ll sit down with you and I’ll give you information on what you need: help with grow sales in your community and plan growth for your own application. Thank you yeah. If anyone has any questions, come bug me afterwards I’ll be up here for a few minutes turning down. So this anyone have any questions. Yes, how regarding the social media platforms yeah, what do you think about Facebook specifically for non? I think about Facebook is good for consumer products, but if you target, like developers or open source communities or even business users, yeah that’s different.
Is that a good platform for that kind of audience right at the end of the day, you got to find your audience. So a lot of the software people are producing does have an end user, which is not a technical person, and Facebook is a great place for it. If it’s b2b software I’ve done LinkedIn advertisements before I did for a while, I mean you want to find your audience, but like, like I had a, I was helping with a tech stack that was that turned out.
Mom’s was the target audience. So we put a couple thousand dollars into Pinterest and it worked out, but I mean Facebook is just cheap, is what it boils down to like. I’ve done Yelp before and Yelp cost two and a half dollars per click, but which is more expensive than like the dollar again on Facebook, but what it really boils down to is you have to figure out where they are, and that is a challenge read.
I mean I would probably find 10 different places to put 20 bucks into and see what happens and then narrow it down to there. Yeah Twitter is not a bad option. Um for people it doesn’t not have as good of geo-targeting you can in the state. You can target zip codes on Facebook, which is good, which I like um yeah, which, but if people are, if your audience is not there, then you’re just shouting into the side of the wall and wasting your time, obviously um but yeah.
I like LinkedIn for b2b stuff too and I’ll do that occasionally yeah. So how do I make my software like so that people actually install it because what if they don’t really know who I am and well, I believe my software is useful. But how do I actually advertise that in such a way that I get the audience to install it? I mean your software might not be useful. To be quite frank, it might be that if it’s only useful to you, then it’s that’s great you’re, just making software for yourself um, but my recommendation for that is figure out a low-cost method for UI testing um.
But if you want to attract new users specifically, I mean a couple of the methods that I work, that I mentioned we’re good. If, if you already are a developer, that has an audience yourself, utilize your own social media, to get it going and then funnel that down to whatever social media is taking place for the application in and of itself um running a make a short article. That explains what that is and put it on.
The internet is pretty simple too I’m not. By short, I mean one minute: two minutes tops yeah short doesn’t mean half an hour, I’m going to give up after five minutes, yeah pretty basic stuff, but we can talk for 20 minutes afterwards. Happily, I can show me you’re doing it I’ll, show you what to do. Yeah insults I’ll, take the insults cool. Thank you.
So we’re hoping it all work out as we are. Quite so with the introduction of the internet, obviously, our Gail just have a lot of options for engaging new audiences and also new ways to engage old audiences. However, one of the challenges of that is that the digital platforms were using for engagement change constantly.
So this kind of fun map from 2010 shows a lot of different social networks. But if you look at you can see, a bunch of them are already kind of fading into oblivion. That’s very so much so in case. So that begs the question of how does archaeology maintain sustainable engagement in the digital realm, and there have been a number of studies on this, both in technology in the cultural heritage scepter and one of the things kind of floated to the top? Is that one way to really be able to engage your audiences? To really know that know the community are trying to engage and what? How they’re, using the resources and digital resources are creating more them, and three of the kind of primary questions of some of these research projects have been whom do you want to engage? How do you want to engage them that are you measuring, if you’re being successful with that engagement? So when project I’m working on the Chinese? This approach is the redesigned for the Society of American Archaeology public web pages, so these pages were developed in the early 2000.
90S early 2000s and we launched in 2006 and have been a hugely successful portal for the public to engage with archaeology, the hundreds of thousands of visitors, and it’s reached many many audiences when it was originally designed. It was sister region when he’s 27 different audiences of Soviet Bobby’s, a huge goal, and it was meant it was designed with the with active feedback from its audiences so going out and talking with them about what they wanted to see how they wanted to use the Resource and so on, so the last question is: how can we tell if it’s exceeding has kind of changed in this goal in this realm of vigil technology want to point out and what the essay is trying to do.
The board is decided they want to redesign the web pages to beat any kind of technological standards. So they’ve asked the members of the public education committee, including myself, to provide some recommendations, and so what we’re doing is we’re trying to create a method of engaging our audiences to better know what they want. What’s on the website and what could be there, and so we decided to use this approach.
That’s been advocated by number of digital cultural heritage, researchers that really combines both qualitative and quantitative methods, so, in addition to using traditional, google analytics like you’d, be leaving pageviews time spent on page bounce rates. We’re also doing things like a Content inventory which goes through every single page, to figure out what’s on there, what’s still working and then during an analysis of what content is currently still available.
Taking all that, and my user survey, which be coming out in some are followed this year to do a deep dive and she’ll play our audiences to figure out what do they like about it? What don’t they like about it? What could be added in the future? Three design so we’re helping my integrating these two approaches that really be able to get a sense of who our communities and to better serve them with the next time on the site.
But, as I said, it’s very much in progress. But if you’re interested in learning more or you’re interested in answering the survey which week with logs, we know this is the community we’re talking to you can contact me if you want a piece you

What’s next We’re going to talk about That today, on The Journey, All right cool, so I have This business venture, Coffee and Kickflips – I do have a domain, but I’m also overwhelmed because I don’t know what to do next. Getting a domain name. That’s like our first idea. I know I’ve had many late nights where I just have a random idea and have to go, buy a domain name and I’m like “ All right.
What’s next?”, The next part is really figuring out what you want that domain name to be. Is it for personal use? Is it for business use? Is it just to have and Potentially sell later on, So what do you think the first step is after buying a domain, Social media links my menu and then how do I go about that? I was listening to a webinar the other day and they were recommending Don’t do a pdf for your menu, So how do I go about Putting my menu on there, what information, what Photos how much text You got the first step.
Right, that’s the domain name. That’s the street! Address for your website Second place to really get All those ideas together, the menu, the information The pictures all that stuff, you need a website If you you’re, not super techy, you need something just Quick, a website builder from many popular providers, Is probably the first step If you are a little bit technical or you have a little bit? More time on your hands to truly make it exactly what you want, something like WordPress might.
Be a really great option and you can literally put Almost whatever you want, You can have a blog on there. You can have your photo galleries. Your menu, don’t use pdf, put it right on the site, make It easy for your visitors, Got it all right. So another thing I was thinking about with Coffee and Kickflips, and this is awesome. We actually just had some merch Made like hats, t-shirts,,’cause. Our logo is super Rad my buddy, designed it Anyways.
I was like “. Oh my gosh,”’cause. We were talking about my website “. I should definitely Have the merch on there.”’Cause yeah, I want to Make money off the coffee and the kids coming in to Rent the ramp in the back, but how can I make more money – ( laughing ), The merch, But how do I go about that Also do I need to worry about security?’Cause now, I’m thinking About money and spending – and I know that there Are hackers out there which terrifies me they’re going at it? It’s super scary out there There’s a lot of things.
You can do to really protect yourself. And protect your investment Now there’s a couple things you can do If you go with a website. Builder from a company typically they’ll handle A lot of the security on the back end for you. But if you go with Something like WordPress or something a little bit: More technical or custom, there are some things you want to do too, But the very first thing you Want to add to your website is: what’s called and SSL, What’s SSL An SSL, it basically is that https in the top of the address bar.
Oh okay, It secures your site. So if you have any log-in Information any form information instead of sending that text Information over the internet for literally anyone to See like a credit card super scary, the SSL encrypts it. So if anyone were to Capture it in the middle, it’s just googley, glump Like it doesn’t make sense, ( laughing ), Googley Glump, that sounds bad Yeah, that’s a technical term for ya.
So the second thing you can do to really beef up the Security of your website is to add a firewall and malware removal Again, if you’re, using a Website builder, with a company, they usually do that for you, but those open source applications. Or custom coded sites you got ta add that firewall And basically what that is Is like, if I have a house, it basically creates a Moat around the house, so it keeps out the Riff-Raff the in-laws so no one’s getting in And then the malware Removal that’s just like.
If someone were to break into your house, it goes in and fixes it for You cleans up everything just in case something did happen Because every 39 seconds A website gets hacked and that’s super scary And 64 % of businesses say they’ve had some sort of malware attack on their site Super scary. We also want to think about Backups on your website, because life happens right Sometimes I know with my own sites and people that I help out with they’ll go and make changes.
On their site and like “, Oh wait, I messed Up, I need to go back!” And if you don’t have a backup there’s nothing to go back to So it’s always good to Have just that fail, safe, The same way, you’d have a Backup for your computer and your pictures, if Something were to ever happen. You want to have the same Thing with your website, So at the end of the Day, you’re protected.’Cause again this is your investment.
Now I’m getting a lot of emails. Am I okay with just Gmail or…? Well, it depends With Gmail. Is it like? Coffeeandkickflips @ gmail.Com, CoffeeAndKickFlips @ gmail.Com Gotcha, so the next Step with your business is to get a domain-based email And there’s a lot of really Great important factors that go into that: Not only is it more secure, To have a domain-based email versus just a free email, Because those companies add those extra layers of security, it’s just more professional, So I should have maybe like contact @ coffeeandkickflips.
Com, Yeah Shred @ coffeeandkickflips.Com, ( laughter, ). Whatever you want to do Info…, It should be yours, And then you can set up your employees to have their own email like Emma @ and then I have Nealy @, it’s just going to look more professional and make sure that you look Legitimate to your customers, What about a like click-to-call? I know I like that when I’m Looking at my competition, other coffee shops and restaurants, Yes, click-to-call is important only if you want people to call you Don’t put a click-to-call If you’re, not in a position where you want random phone Calls at the end of the night Makes sense, Which reminds me: do you Want to carry two phones – ( phones, ringing ).
Well, I already do so. Now that would be three Right. Many of us use When we start a business, we end up just using Our cell phone right, Then we get random calls and we answer like “, Hey, what’s up?” And it’s a potential client And then it looks just –, Not professional, Not professional. So what A lot of people are doing is getting a second Number for their phone, There are lots of apps out there, like Google has a second phone.
Godaddy has a second phone option, There’s plenty of others out there. That’s a really good point To where you don’t have. To go, buy a new phone which is super expensive, And then buy another plan which is super expensive Super expensive. I only have so many pockets Right and just have that right there and then now you’ll know “ Cool this is for business,.”, “, Hey! This is Coffee and Kick Flips, how can we help you?” Versus a friend like “, Hey, what’s up “ How’s it going?”, Although that is kind of our vibe at Coffee and Kick Flips? Keep it chill! It’s all about what your business is.
I don’t know how different it’s going to be than when my friends call me, But maybe I should also Reconsider that ( laughing ) I got ta, be honest. This sounds like a lot Sounds like a lot of work. Is there a way to outsource this, and if so, what do you recommend? I trust your opinion. ( laughing ) I’ll, build it. No, So there are, if you don’t Want to do it yourself, you can hire a professional.
There are plenty of web Designers and web developers and people out there that This is their full-time gig, Whether you hire a design. Agency and what I would say when you’re really looking To see who you’re going to hire check out their portfolio, See if it matches your vision,.’Cause every designer Every company every agency has their own feel and flow, So you want to make sure It matches your business, your vision and, most importantly, you want to make sure You can contact them Because if they go and build your site and now they’re gone Mia and you need help you’re kind of stuck There’s not much you can do Okay, so one other thing: I have extra domains, Okay And I don’t really need them.
So what can I do with them? What you could do is you can sell it? Oh, So there is actually an after market just for domain names, You’re literally selling Online real estate, but it’s a domain And things go for thousands of dollars, some as high as millions Of dollars it’s crazy But places you can sell your domain name. There’s Afternic, there’s Sedo there’s GoDaddy Auctions, there’s a lot of places.
You can list your domain and the more places you list it, the more visibility and exposure you get to potentially sell your domain All right. So that’s all we have for you. I really hope this helps. You with your domain name and really building that strong foundation for your business, Be sure to comment below We’d love to know your domain name. Also, click Like And hey. If you know Someone who could benefit from this article click Share also subscribe, And one last thing ring that bell so you’ll be the first to Know about our next articles.
We’ve been working for three Years on the virtualization technology and Compute Engine, So it’s not a copy of what you Can find in other places It’s really unique to Google So from the bottom up, You know what [ INAUDIBLE ] was Explaining that, because of our scale, we had to Build our product, We have to design our server, We have to build our Network layers And our machines are the same. So the operating system – we – what we find the best we Strip it and then we customize it because this Is our own hardware, So at all the layers this is Google-Only technology, We don’t use Apache, We don’t –, maybe for Internal stuff, But for the project we have Rebuilt web servers file system, as you can see, really From the bottom up, So that’s why this Virtualization layer is completely optimized for our Platform, our servers And what we see and I hope That you will try Compute Engine is that we managed to Have a very low footprint, Which means between the physical Performance and the virtual performance there is Always a little loss because there is a virtualization layer.
Running on the machines Here, the footprint of this loss – Is very, very, very thin because we’ve been Optimizing that So you almost have the Physical machine’s performance And what is also important, is That we’ve been working a lot that was in the early Specifications on the we call the noisy, neighbors problem. The noisy neighbors is that with Virtualization technology you have on public cloud Usually you have a virtual instance running on a Physical machine, But you are not alone – Of course, You have neighbors, so other Customers that are running their own virtual instance on The same physical machine And, let’s assume there is a bit Of overbooking, when your neighbors — so co-locating on this Physical machine — are hitting hard, So maybe they have A peak of load, You will see your own Performance dropping That’s something we want to Avoid with Compute Engine We’ve been working hard on that To do live migration of machines when a physical machine Becomes noisy so you have your performance from Day, one to the end, And you have constant Performance over time You don’t have performance.
[ risks ] The boot time and the Availability time as well is really important. You will see in the demo. You have your machine in 20. Seconds more or less so 20 seconds from the time you click New Machine to the time you can SSH the machine, So it’s not 5 or 10 minutes, It’s 20 seconds And the boot time. Is really fast, Like it’s less than 20 seconds, Because there is a staging provisioning, Time before Our objective is always To have zero but it’s impossible, But we’re trying to go.
Below one second, So we are working really really Hard on Compute Engine, There is a lot of unknowns at Google I/O that we made Like we are providing now load Balancing so level 3, We are providing advanced Routine, We are providing automation, So there are a lot of features. Coming on the project, So a few slides And then demo, What are the use cases again? About Compute Engine, So the first one, hence the Name, Compute Engine was compute.
The idea of you can Launch any number of virtual machines using Linux, So today we support Debian Centos and we have a core OS, which is GCL — Google Compute Engine Linux –, which is like Ubuntu Let’s say And we’re going to support More operating systems over time, I can’t disclose in a public Audience what we’re going to support, but in the following Months, we’re going to support more operating systems; That you all know The idea is that it’s not Only the machines, It’s really about again, as Always on a cloud platform, the network, The machine-to-machine networks, Are incredible In less than one millisecond You can transfer terabytes at a terabyte per second.
Of course you have The physical limit of the hard drive, What I’m saying is that there Are almost no limits from the network perspective, The storage –? So there are two new Storage mechanisms – We’ve been talking about cloud Storage, but you will still have the local storage On the machine That will live with the machine, Meaning that when you create the machine, you Have this disk, It’s usually hundreds Of gigabytes, It depends on how many cores You want on your machine And I will show you after Doing the demo, But you have also something I Mentioned earlier, which is a persistent disk, which is a Shared storage like a SAN, if you want across machines And there’s a lot of tuning, As always, you can use The web REST API to create your machine.
You can use the command line. So gcutil, similar to the gsutil I showed earlier Or you can from the UI Create the machine And that’s something: I will do as well, Because I need something: Quite visual for you, I have talked about All of this — scale performance value. So that’s the overview. What you Get with Compute Engine So of course you get What’s right here, so the virtual machines, But you get a private network.
Within Google And you can do sub-networks as Many as you want set your firewall rules, And I hope you all understand. That you are root on this machine, so this is your machine. Running in Google infrastructure, That’s really the idea, So you do whatever you want And they are of course connected. To the internet, so you can host an. I don’t know. Website on Tomcat, if that’s what you want to do, Maybe you can’t read: Very well So this one was persistent.
Disk This one was local disk And this one is cloud storage. So there’s three main storage. Mechanisms we provide And there’s three access types. So the command line, the web UI and from the code So the API itself, so either the REST, HTTP API or using A client implementation — again Java,.NET PHP You name it So what we call the project. Is where all the machines will be linked? It’s not physical stuff.
It’s really a way to organize. Your different applications, So in one project you have All your machines, You can go to another project, If you want to separate And within this project you Have your own persistent disk, local disk that comes with the Machine network et cetera And each project has an ID So the machine –. So, as I said, Root access. There are stock images you can use. The idea is that you could Build your own images, We are running a modem Processor, of course, so this is Intel Sandy Bridge.
These are the virtual cores that You can have from one Then, even now we have Launched at I/O new, very small modems Like if you do dev, we call Them small and micro, I will show them, But basically you have from One to eight virtual cores And per CPU: that’s The RAM you get And we have various profiles, So we have what we call the Standard, which is this ratio? We have high memory, so you Have more memory per core And we have high CPU, So you Have less memory per core, I don’t know what happened Next MALE SPEAKER, [, INAUDIBLE, ], BASTIEN LEGRAS, Not yet no! The question was: can I create A custom machine from the API specifying the number of CPUs You have to go into the types I will show on the demo.
What Types of machines we provide MALE SPEAKER, [, INAUDIBLE, ], BASTIEN LEGRAS. That’s the High memory profile, So I will show you All the profiles, I think you will see that We are trying to address the main use cases. It’s high memory profile. What You’re talking about So let me finish with this slide. So I can show you that, right after So external IPs, of course, you Can choose to add your own IPs, which are external IPs For this machine to listen on internet, We are doing, of course, one-to-one NATing and firewall.
I will so everything On the console, This is the persistent disk. So of course there are zones I forgot to mention, but when You create your machine, you choose if you want to deploy it. In US, East US, Central or West Europe, where we bring more Availability zones, of course, like in APAC Because we are — today, GC is not deployed. In all the data centers that we have So it’s only the first ones, We are bringing more zones.
So you can deploy your application closest To your customers And everything is encrypted in Time of storage at rest and even machine-to-machine Transfers are encrypted, which gives you another idea. Of the performance We are not even slowed. By the encryption, So the ephemeral disk, so the Local disk, if you want lives and dies with the instance, That’s the idea. You create your instance. If you’re in a compute scenario, You don’t care, what’s on the machine, You just create it, Then maybe you want to set up A launch script that will configure the machine And the machine will do Some computation, If you remember the use case, Earlier with mobile and back-end and VM engine From App Engine, That’s typical, [, INAUDIBLE ].
You create the machine, he’s Going to do his job and then you destroy the machine. And you don’t care what’s on the machine So for that kind of use case. You can use the local disk because it will die. With the machine, If, however, you need to persist, The data generated by the machine, then you want to Use the persistent disk And you can boot a machine From the persistent disk, That’s really key because you Want to minimize your cost! So when you don’t need the Machine anymore, you will destroy it As it takes 10 to 20 seconds.
To get the machine again, there is no need to let It slide the light When you go out of the room. You switch off your light. That’s really the idea. Of open engine, You don’t want to spend money. For a machine that is doing nothing of course, So that’s why you need to manage Your data, of course, And the cloud storage we just Talked about cloud storage, That’s of course integrated. With Compute Engine Again easy to store terabytes Of data or petabytes of data from Compute Engine – And that was the case in the big Migration use case I was showing before And the three access doors that You have — so UI command line and from the API.
I won’t go into too Much detail here: We’ve covered that More or less So Compute Engine is In most of our big architecture diagrams, So you see it here: it’s a Hadoop MapReduce use case Here it was the thing Of this morning I was presenting when you want To do batch processing for your mobile app on demand. Et cetera, et cetera, This is an analytic pipeline. So you have a lot of data coming in You use App Engine for Mapreduce and then you want maybe to also use Hadoop To analyze this data Compute Engine is everywhere, I mean everyone needs virtual Machines at one point, It’s very, very rare that you Don’t need it in your project And before going into the demo, So we already have, of course, an ecosystem Right Scale is one of The first partners, So they know very well Compute Engine They have their own image.
Because that’s the idea, You can start from a cannot Machine so a stock image, then you can customize it And then you can take a snapshot. Of course You put it on cloud, storage and Then you will reuse it to reboot a new machine, So you have your own machines. In your project So Right Scale, they are Providing their own image And they added onto the image A connector that connects to their central console The idea is to have elasticity So scalability up and down at the infrastructure, Level We provide that with App Engine, As you know, it scales Up and down You don’t have to worry about How many machines you need to run in your app When you are at the Infrastructure level you have to manage that So do I need to put More machines behind my load, balancer.
So do I need to remove some Machines, because now I don’t have the demand for All these machines, So Right Scale, is doing That for you, You just configure You say I don’t know you Define some threshold, You say at above 70 % of usage, I want you to add five more machines And the rest of the inverse Rule so when you go below 50 %, you remove three Machines, You define your own rules and Right Scale will manage the scalability so from The console directly on Compute Engine – And they do also a lot of Monitoring and stuff, These are other partners.
Technical partners, MapR, is a commercial Hadoop. Implementation, I have a project with them. I was mentioning [, INAUDIBLE, ], Earlier They are using MapR for a Hadoop Project to analyze the traffic on the website, And improve their conversion ratio, So it works very well. We broke the [ teraflop ] record. It was one minute something With Compute Engine It’s now less It’s like 56 seconds. So it’s to give you an idea.
Of the pure performance of Compute Engine, I won’t go into that. It’s the big data landscape. Let’s go on the demo for The last 15 minutes, So I have to sit down again Sorry And then I will take of Course questions, So let me clean that up, So you start from here. Why is that there? I hope you see. So this is the console home Page for a project, The console: let’s go, So you can understand really how it works.
You go on here With your Gmail account. You Activate the services you want to use and then you create Your project – And here I am logged with My co-op account Google, So we see we have some projects. Internally, that are shared with me, And I have access to this one Which is our demo creator Here? You see the services That are activated for this project. The project is like a team. You can share the project with Other people in your team, like you, are sharing a doc in Google Docs and give specific access to everyone So App Engine, so this means That on this project, I guess people are using some App Engine instances Compute Engine and we Will go into that Cloud? Storage, Big Query! Some APIs [, INAUDIBLE ], There you see which services Are being used So, let’s focus on Compute Engine and then let’s do a quick tour of the Administration.
Console Here you can see a basic Monitoring graph, That’s just showing nothing. Is happening, It’s a demo environment. There is no external user And we will give it some loads. During the next demo, You can see the network traffic As well that we are monitoring and disk traffic, You will see here –. Let me zoom –, that’s a sample machine. So that’s the name! Of the machine, The machine is running, You see the profile of the Machine — one CPU 3.
8 gigabytes of memory. Where is the machine? So it’s in US Central This one, How many persistent disks are Attached to this machine, What is its external Ip address And on which network? So that’s a default network. But you can create other networks with other rules on Which the machine is deployed And the images that the Machine is using Here, you see, there are Some Ubuntu GCEL, So that’s a few machines.
We’ve Got on the project Machine doing fractal Stuff, which is the point of the demo after You see there are some Write images, so I guess it’s Right Scale And you see all your machines And which state they are et cetera. So now, let’s focus On a machine so that one for example, You can put some tags on your Machine, if you want to organize your machine, That way, Again, as I said, you see the Zone external IP internal, IP disks that are attached, To the machine, So this one is mode One 10 gigabytes, It has read and write access, You can add metadata, which is Useful going to want to use a launch script et cetera, With the API And then you will see the Permissions, the machine has with all the services, And you can [ recognize ] storage test use, Big Query.
So that’s why I said we have Integrated the projects to each other, So let’s create one machine. Right now, so you can see how it works: Test Bastien, One and Description tags metadata, so you add whatever You want here There you define where you Want the machine to be So, you see I can deploy in Europe or in US Central Today, more zones Are coming in So let’s go in Europe West B, And back to your question the types of the machines, so you Can see you have the new machines which are micro and Small, so very small, if you don’t need power, I don’t know.
It’s like a machine that is doing some networking stuff. You have the high CPU profile, Where you see the number of CPUs and the low memory Best [ view ], But if you need a lot of memory, Here you can see high mem profile, –, two CPUs, 13 gigs or even Eight CPUs 52 gigs, That’s the types of machines. You cannot yet define your own Type like I want a three CPU or four CPU and 50 gigabytes. You have to choose the Closest today MALE SPEAKER So with the Restful API: is it only possible to specify If [ INAUDIBLE, ], BASTIEN, LEGRAS Yeah exactly And from the API, you can list Which are the templates? Because we are adding New templates, So you can release the templates Dynamically and say: OK now I will take that One because it’s closest to my requirements, So that’s a dynamic List actually – And you have other machines with What we call a scratch disk or ephemeral disk That was in my slide that local storage – I can show them by the way.
So when there is the –, so you See the machine and it’s local disk. So let’s take I don’t Know anything — high memory profile. Then you can boot from an Existing persistent disk, As I said earlier, if you need To work on data, you have persisted earlier or you can Just take the scratch disk or a new disk that comes With the image, So let’s do that, Then you have the list of the Stock images we’ve got So we build them frequently.
So You can see here we have –. This is the US, so it’s 7th of May 9th of May for Debian, CentOS and GCEL here Or you can also save –. Sorry, I hope you can see If you can’t see Raise your hand Or you can save your Own images So other guys in my team. They Chose to create a Tomcat 6 type of server, So it will have Tomcat already Pre-Installed, Because when we did the Snapshot we had already installed and configured Tomcat So let’s take a standard Machine And then you can add Other disks, If the machine has to work, we Shared data – you can add other disks that you have Already created, We got in a network, So you will define in which Network you want the machine to belong, So let’s keep the default And then external IP.
If the Machine has to have an external IP And here the access. So what it means is that if you Want the machine to have access to storage, read and Write or no access or to test use, we will pre-prog This kind of access, So in your bigger projects, if You’re using App Engine in test use – and you want this Machine to work with test use, then you will give it Access right now, Let’s create the machine.
So that’s where everyone Cross, your fingers, But basically so It’s loading It’s going to the stage the Machine into Europe West, which is 20 milliseconds, From here I think, And then we will see it Directly in the list, I have an error, but it’s Not the same page, It’s not my concern. Don’t worry. It’s still creating The machine It’s another — and that’s the demo. I will do By the way, right after hoping, this one will work In this demo, we’re going to Create one – and here we’re going to create 16, so 17 Machines altogether using –, this is an App Engine app And it’s going to use the Rest API, of course, to create the machines, While it’s still creating There, the machine, I think in a few seconds, the Machine should be there Here, it is It’s being created, So I guess it’s alphabetical Here.
It is coming in In Europe West B, The machine is there OK, quite fast. Finally, I didn’t measure, I think it was 20 seconds. Something like that And the machine is available And if you want to connect to The machine right away, you have the REST snipped or you Have the SSH command line you can directly use in Your terminal, So gcutil is the equivalent Of gsutil, but for Compute Engine, Let’s clear that I just passed the command line: Gcutil last version: That’s the project; — Google Platform, Demo SSH In that zone, the machine I just created Normally, what would Happen it would ask for a login password, But no because we have Integrated everything, So this is using OAuth.
It’s not visible. I’r going to zoom like This, maybe MALE SPEAKER No, but You can just — BASTIEN LEGRAS, Ah sorry MALE SPEAKER, So you can Enlarge your fonts Yeah BASTIEN LEGRAS! That’s! Ok! Now, Sorry MALE SPEAKER, [, INAUDIBLE, ], BASTIEN, LEGRAS, Good idea, Good idea, [ Fredo ], So I copied the GS2 Command to SSH And, as I said, I didn’t have to Enter login password, which is ultra-painful by the way Because what I’ve done is that the first time you run gcutil It will send you to a URL.
You go to that. Url In your browser, This URL will ask you to Authenticate against Google And if you authenticate Successfully, it will give you the OAuth key that you copy Paste back in gcutil, Which means that I have Authenticated gcutil to cloud platform on behalf of me So now this gcutil installation On my computer has access to the machines To which I am authorized in the project, You understand that It’s very convenient because no Need to log in to remember password or whatever, And it’s even more safe.
So we are on the machine. So usually the demo stops there. Of course, because I don’t have much things – To show here I don’t know, Let’s check if the memory Is the right one? So we have our 26 gigabytes. What about the CPU? I need to –. I have a hard time: — OK. CPU info. So here you can See it’s really big. My CPU numbers zero. One two three: So there are four CPUs As we asked And you see Intel Xeon CPU, You see the technical Detail of the CPU, So the machine is there I am root.
I can do whatever I want. On the machine, So let me do another demo before We finish and take some questions. The demo is nice and visual I hope it’s going to work. Ok, I don’t want to mess up Sorry. So this is an App Engine And this is a demo that has been I think showcased at I/O. This is App Engine And the idea of this demo — This is a very technological demo. The idea is to start Vms using the API, That’s what I’m going! To do right now And I need to show In parallel, Sorry, It’s for the demo to Be nice to see Sorry, I will have to do Something like this, So I want you to See that list And then the idea is To start the VMs, As you can see, it’s Coming blue here So on the right we have a Cluster and on the left, a single instance And here on my poor console Because I have [ INAUDIBLE ], we should see as soon as it’s Going to be refreshed, Sorry, I’m going to [ force ] refresh.
Normally it’s refreshed. Ok, we’re going to see The fractal cluster –, which is the one I’r creating — that is being started. Ok, this is this one And on the right, the machine Once they are green, the idea is that the machines Are ready to SSH The program — so App Engine Still App Engine is going onto the machines provision, a Little program that will run some fractal imagery, So it’s pure scientific computer, Calculation, so it’s using a lot of CPU And then we will display — if it works, because I am waiting also for the single instance — and display some fractal Imagery And one is a distributed: Calculation, The other is single, So we see how fast the machines Work together because that’s the type of use Case that requires a lot of network also, So the machines are there.
That just got created, I hope I can show So I don’t know why dimension On the left, the single instance failed, But the idea is that the machine On the right, as you can see here, zooming out have Been able to create their own fractal And then it will mark on the Right the render time And it will calculate As long as –, when I zoom here with my two Fingers it’s calculating the next layer of the fractal.
So sorry half of the demo Here is not working The idea –. Imagine that on the left you Have exactly the same thing, but only one machine is Trying to do the job Here we have eight machines, Doing the same job, So what we see on the left? Usually, is that the average render time is much bigger. Because it’s only one core And you can zoom You can zoom, it will calculate calculate So as soon as I zoom.
It’s Recalculated the fractal and rendered that in a distributed Calculation, Because all the machines are Doing the calculations – And it’s really pretty – You can see the [ colors ]. So that’s the idea. On how fast, So how long did it take? I don’t know 30 seconds And I could say three eight. I Don’t know 128 machines, it would be the same Because it’s done in parallel. We do that every Day at Google We have millions, We don’t say exactly how much But are in the millions range in terms of size of cores And then you just stop and the Machine will be destroyed on the left, So App Engine is asking –.
Ok, they are dying right now. It’s asking for the –, I don’t know where they are, They should go. Maybe they already disappeared. Because they are already red, They already disappeared. But usually you see It live also Here you see the — OK here they are. You see It’s spinning right there. They are dying right there. One after one And now they have disappeared. I hope you caught it, But it has destroyed the Machine and then it’s ready back for another demo.
Ok, I’m done for the [ pres — ]. I can take some questions if You have before we go into the coffee break. Yes, We’ll try to pass the mic [. We have ] one mic Thanks MALE SPEAKER, Ciao Bastien, It’s more a pricing question. If I have some data some files, Terabytes on the Cloud Storage and I launch 10 virtual Machines which share the data on the cloud storage, Do I pay for this internal exchange, BASTIEN LEGRAS, So Good question: So we don’t charge for cloud Platform service to cloud platform service network Exchange, So what it means is that you can Do any traffic between App Engine and Cloud Storage and Compute Engine between Compute Engine machines between Compute Engine zones inter-network between Compute Engine and of course, Cloud Storage, It won’t cost you anything.
In terms of network, What you will only pay Is your 10 terabytes MALE SPEAKER, The storage BASTIEN LEGRAS, So one terabyte Is $ 50, so you’re going to pay? Maybe $ 500, I think I can show the pricing [ slide ] And then you will pay For your machines, Maybe you want to have a look Because the pricing question, I think, is interesting: For all of you, It’s fully public. We have nothing to hide. We are transparent, So cloud.
Google.Com, as you Understand is the site to go. This is everything From there. You can Find everything — the project, the project Explanation: data sheet the website to developers where You can see all the API documentation And, of course, there Is the pricing and pricing by project So App Engine pricing? Is the Most complex because we want to be really fair to really Price only what you use As you can see, you will Be priced by what you are using exactly If you are using front-end Instances dynamic et cetera: you have the price per hour, Datastore API, we price Every 100k operations We have a very [ fine, ] rate For that kind of pricing For storage, it’s very Easier to understand There is always a free tier So you can try for free, You have a free tier Five gigabytes of storage et cetera, So you can try and Use storage: We have two types of storage, So the most replicated and what We call durable reduced availability, less replicated, Which is, of course cheaper? We do pricing in Euros if you Want to pay in Euros with a contract, et cetera, And we price, of course, Depending on how much you need, So, if you are in the 100 Terabytes range we will price by gigabyte.
This is a gigabyte per month. Price that one! So if you had 10 terabytes You can see it’s 54 — so $ 540 per month And for the network, as we say, Everything that goes into the network is free. Of course, we charge for the Network so egress network from Google to the internet, To your users And that’s the type of price, But there is no Service-To-Service cost So internal Google transfers Are free and then some operation costs, But every 1,000 application Operations is $ 0.
01, So basically you won’t see it And Compute Engine very key. So that’s really important, That’s something we announced At I/O, So if you use the machine six minutes, we’re going To charge 10 minutes, If you use the machine 10 Minutes we charge 10 minutes If you use it 11 minutes. We charge 11 minutes, You see, so there is a minimum Set of 10 minutes and then we charge by the minute And then for all the machine.
Types you have seen earlier when I was creating a machine You have a price depending if the machine is in Europe. Or the US And you have a price which is Per hour, so you can divide by 60 to have the by Minute price And you have a price for each Type of machine, of course, So whether you need or not a Local disk on the machine, so that’s the size of The local disk, The high memory profile so You see two cores 13 gigabytes.
Instead, Of two cores, So it’s twice of it almost Up to 52 gigabytes, So here is everything [, INAUDIBLE ], And here it’s a ratio, CPU or Memory, whether that is bigger, so less memory, Per CPU, If it’s an [, HPC ] use case, you may want To use that – And you have the very new ones – Which are the small ones, the micro and the small, So we are at $ 0.021, It’s very small about $ 0.2 an hour And again network pricing, Between our services or in the same zone is free.
We charge only external Network And then we reduce depending On the amount of network, I’m not the commercial but as Kristoff said earlier, if you’re interested in a Professional contract with support you can see, there are Several support packages, which is there So we do up to Platinum with Dedicated account manager for you et cetera, But we have the free one. So you Can, of course, access to the [ INAUDIBLE ] to the Stack Overflow et cetera, There’s silver, so you Can do ticket You can call call in, And Gold — and Gold is like.
You have a Committed response time And you have all the various Commitments here at the pricing detail And if you are interested in That type of support, if you are in production, you have Customers, you need to make sure it’s going to be up. It’s Not just test and development, then you just contact Us right there That will arrive on Kristoff’s table So very simple: Everything is there And on the articles, everything Is if you search for Google I/O sessions, you will Find them right here And you can choose your track.
And, of course, my track is Cloud Platform. Ok, I think we’re good. Maybe you want to have your Coffee break now: [ APPLAUSE, ], BASTIEN LEGRAS. Thank You very much
It doesn’t sound like it’s very interesting as far as generating leads, but if your website is not able to gain rank – and it’s not on the first page of Google – for lots of different keyword phrases even after you’ve done all the things that you should be doing. But there might be an issue, so what we’re going to do is talk about what Google penalties are and how to detect and clean up your website.
So has your home to your website been penalized by Google here we go so for algorithmic penalties. Here are some surefire clues that your website has been penalized by Google, so when I say algorithmic penalties over since the year 2000, I believe there have been Google algorithm updates. Some of them are very small. In fact, in some years there have been more than one google update algorithm update per day so, but there are but have been some very big algorithm updates by Google since a year 2000 and eat one of those updates that they do.
That’s really big that the aim and the goal is to make sure that google is giving the consumer or the person searching the kind of information they want and not giving them spam or junk. So Google wants to make your search experience very relevant and very good. So, in order to do that, it has to get rid of spam and junk and things that people do that, just don’t make any sense. So how can you tell if your website has been penalized? Your website is not ranking well for your brand name anymore.
That’s a huge one dead giveaway. If your site doesn’t ring for much else, it should at least do well on one keyword phrase which is the name of your company or your brand, any one page, any I’m sorry, any page. One positions that you had are slipping back to page two or three without any action on your part, that is a clue page drink for your site has dropped from respectable two or three to a big fat zero.
We don’t even look at much for page rank anymore, it’s more about keyword, phrases and I’m going to show you a picture to of what a penalized site versus a non penalized site looks like the entire website has been removed from Google’s cash search results overnight. That’s a huge clue, you’re running a site search, and i’m going to show you this in a minute: the site, colon, your domain com and a keyword, and it yields no results or weird results.
Your listing, when you eventually find it in google, is for a page on your site other than the home page. So if your home page isn’t ranking, but maybe your about Us page, your services pages ranking, it could mean that your home page has been penalized. If you see one or more of these factors, you can be pretty sure that a penalty has affected your site. We see that all the time when people come to us and they want us to use a website that they’ve been using and haven’t, had any luck getting rank, and now they want us to add content and do SEO that’s fine.
We can do all that. But if they have them penalized, it’s almost impossible for us to make a difference without knowing some of these things. So here are reasons that you might to get penalized. Your website might get penalized by Google and any of the reasons that are in red are ones that that that I see pretty frequently so the first one is buying links. You cannot buy links to increase your page, your increase, your rank.
Lots of people have done it in the past lots of SEO. People have done it without telling their clients. That is a bad deal, and you do not want to do that so no buying links. If your SEO provider did it in the past and didn’t tell you you could be penalized and not even know it excessive reciprocal links. If you’ve been exchanging lots of length of clients, it could be seen as a manipulation attempt.
So you want to make sure that you know a few very relevant exchanges of links are awesome. You know one assisted living facility links to you, you link to them fabulous, but when you have hundreds of reciprocal links, that is a problem duplicate content. We talk to people about this all the time. Any duplicate content on your site makes it less useful in Google’s view, and that could result in the penalty make sure your content is unique and well-written use tools like copyscape.
I can’t emphasize that enough. When we write articles for our clients, they are one hundred percent minimum of 75 percent, because sometimes there’s a quote or a definition of a disease process, but most of the contents beyond that are all the content beyond. That is one hundred percent. You need to that client, so quotes are okay and definitions are okay, because you might want to define Alzheimer’s or you might want to define Parkinson’s disease in a article, but the rest of that article had better be unique, and for us it always is overuse of H1 tags: this is more of a geeky term that you may not know if you’re, not a web developer, but behind the scenes of your website anything that the headline has what’s called an h1 tag.
H1 tag means make it big make it bold, make it big. I want it to be a headline, so if you use h1 tags all over the place at the bottom of your website, your headline should be at the top, and then you should not have more headlines at the bottom of your page. It looks a little spammy and Google would see that as trying to manipulate the system. Internal 404 errors. The 404 error is when you go to a page on your website and there’s nothing there.
So Google wants to know that you tend to your content and weed out any errors and problems and wants to know you’re taking care of your website if you’re delivering 404 errors inside your own website, meaning the content is not there or the page doesn’t exist. It’s a signal that your users aren’t getting the information they asked for, and it shows that the site’s map being well maintained, keywords, stuff, content.
You see this a lot. There are all kinds of weird and wonderful rules about keyword, density and content. The truth is that none of these rules are proven in a very high keyword. Density is a flag for poorly written content, so we said home care, st. Louis home care, st. Louis hump, your st. Louis home care, st. Louis home care, st. Louis over and over again in an article for a who resided in st. Louis or had their business.
In st. Louis Google would see, okay, that’s keyword stuffing, it sounds dumb. Therefore, it is done. Therefore, it’s penalized, so footer links – and most of you don’t have to worry about this, but some web designers use furlings as a navigational aid. That’s fine and some try to manipulate PageRank by using the footer as a place to pass link juice. Unnaturally, that’s a long definition, but what it really means is that you can’t you know, get more.
You shouldn’t try to use your footer links to get more. You know pagerank missing, site map data, google uses the xml sitemap to parse your site structure and learn how to put together so inside of google analytics in inside. Something called you that used to be called webmaster tools, which is now called the search console. The search console will accept your site, xml sitemaps. When we develop a site, we always include a system that puts together your site, xml sitemaps, and then we submit those to webmaster tools or search console whatever you want to call it so that google has an easier time indexing.
All the pages of your site and you’re in Google understands higher sites put together, so we do that for our clients. Every web developer should do that for their clients, hidden links. All the links in your site should be visible and useful to others useful to users. Anything that’s hidden is considered suspicious, so if it doesn’t light up when you scroll over it, it’s not underlined it’s not in the blue color.
You know. If you can’t tell that it’s a link, then that could be a problem broken external links. If you don’t keep links up-to-date, Google will see me, don’t care about the user experience and they’re happy and are happy to peg visitors off to various 404 error pages. So if you are linking away from your site to other sites – and we see this a lot on your resources page, so everybody wants to have this long resources page that has all these links to the Alzheimer’s Association and to PDFs that you can download.
But nobody bothers to go back in and update those resource pages once they’re out there number one. You don’t need a resource page, because you are the resource for your clients and number two. If you don’t go in and update those pages from time to time, when we redo a website from somebody, we check those links and almost the time they haven’t looked at them since 2008, many of them are broken, and so we reconfigure those resources pages.
So they don’t have broken links so make sure you go to your resources pages any page where you might be having a PDF, download or other kinds of resources for seniors and make sure they all work scraped content. This is not something that happens in the home care industry so much, but it happens. Sometimes web site managers pull content from other sites in order to bulk up their own pages. But Google sees this as a pointless duplication, replace it with your own original content.
Instead, in other words, don’t go copy your services, page off of somebody else’s a services, page hidden content, less ethical, optimization tactics include disguising text on a page to manipulate the theme or keyword waiting, so, in other words, you’ve got hidden content in there. It’s behind the scenes and no one can see it Google’s on to that and it doesn’t make any difference anymore. Anchor text overuse okay, so once upon a time SEO, experts worked on linking certain keywords in order to reinforce their authority.
Since 2012 penguin update the overuse of anchor text linking is strongly discouraged. So in other words, if I had a link on, let’s say care, calm and my care comlink was home care st. Louis Missouri. But I used that text home care, st. Louis Missouri on every link back to my website that I had on other websites, then I would be penalized for the keyword phrase home care st. Louis Missouri. Instead, it should be things like read more learn about this.
Learn more visit our website, even though it doesn’t it’s not a keyword phrase, it’s a better thing to do to use something that is normal, as opposed to a keyword phrase so visit our website learn more read more. Those are much better from other websites to your website. Don’t all use the same keyword, phrase website, timing out or down. If a website goes down, everyone gets upset the visitor, the webmaster and the search engine.
If Google can’t find your site, you would rather d index it rather than keep sending visitors to a dead end. So if you leave it down and we’re not talking about an hour two hours or even eight hours, we’re talking about five days six days eight days, if your website is down it’ll get the indexed keyword domains while domain names aren’t that risky in themselves domain names With keywords – and them might be so if my website address instead of being Valerie’s home care service com, if it was home care, st.
Louis com, there is a chance that I could be penalized. So Google might see that as anchor text manipulation. If you do use an exact match domain make sure it has plenty of great content on it. Otherwise, Google will assume you’re trying to fool people into clicking on it. Overuse of meta keywords. We see this all the time behind the scenes on your website. There’s a place for every blog post in every page, where you can put keyword phrases.
We see people fill in with hundreds of different keyword, phrases or other SEO s, and if we take over that site, guess what we strip them all out and put the one or two that are relevant to that page meta keywords have been a topic for debate For some time they are way too easy to manipulate make sure you use normal no more than five per page slow speeds. If you’re slight, if your site is slow, it can be penalized because folks get irritated with it.
So does Google spun content spinning content is content, theft and really it just goes back to you duplicating content or just spinning some of the words to make them make it look like it. A hundred percent unique and really it can be easy to get fooled by this. If you hire writers – and you don’t know them or you haven’t been in this business like we have hiring writers, they can try, try to spin content and make it look a higher percent, unique and actually, in the end of the day, it’s cheap.
It doesn’t make sense, and it’s awful if you buy cheap content. If you buy content that was written by someone in another country, perhaps – and it can be a lot of spun content and grammatically incorrect comment spam, we see a lot of this on WordPress sites, especially we often will turn off commenting on websites, because, typically all that Ends up there is spam. You don’t get a lot of folks commenting on articles from a home care website, no matter how good they are.
It just doesn’t happen that often so we turn off those comments. You don’t get spam hacked content. If your site has been hacked, Google will quickly quickly remove it from the search engine act quickly to contain hacking, attempts and restore sites from backup. If the worst does happen, I’m going to show you a picture of that in just a second speedy link, building it’s natural to want your new site to rank quickly, but don’t overdo it lots of similar links pointing to the same place as a sign of automation.
Don’t artificially bump your link velocity make gradual changes over time. So when you all went out when you’re out there and let’s say your hometown of st. Louis Missouri and you’re a home care agency, you want to rank for home share st. Louis instantly. But we tell folks, if you do it right and you view it over time and you want something that will last plan on it taking six months to get to the first page of Google if your site’s not penalized okay.
So this is a picture of screenshot. Today, from google of a site that is not penalized and has not been hacked, this is a site that we developed. This is a site that has not been penalized and its care resolutions calm. So, if I put in up here, this is the important piece I put site and then a colon and then chair resolutions, calm and then a space. And then I put my keyword phrase home care. What I’m looking for is to see, because we know how important that keyword phrases to this client is to see if they show up for the keyword, phrase home care, and they do there’s all kinds of articles here that are showing up for the keyword phrase home Care, that’s perfect.
This site is not packed and not penalized for the keyword phrase home here. That’s awesome news. This site is penalized for the keyword phrase home care, so this is not a site that that l, tcp created or maintains. We have given the client much help and information as possible to eliminate this situation, so this is a site that we did not create. It happens to people all the time is not the fault of the site owner.
It is something that we take very seriously so when a client comes to us and we are hosting their site and maintaining it, we use a company called security suc. You are, I secure a dotnet and we use that company to do nightly backups of content and to also do every six hour malware scans. So when we do a web site when we host it and we’re responsible for it, we have the system set up as soon as that site goes live on the internet.
When you don’t have a system like that set up, and especially when you’re using WordPress. This is what can happen, and people may not notice it for months if the site hasn’t been taken down off the internet by Google. You may not even know that this has happened to you. So here’s what we did we put in the same exact keyword, phrases of site, colon reliant at home care, calm and then the keyword phrase home care, and this is what happened.
So the main thing that comes up is that this site may be hacked. Now. I can tell you that this site has been cleaned up and it is no longer hacked and there’s no problem with it at all. But this is the problem they’re having now the after effect, and that is that there were because it was hacked and it was left that way for probably a fairly good amount of time. All of these spam things come up, so we have here / that I t8 a PDF chapter 17.
None of this is their stuff. This is not their stuff that should be on their website. Now, if you were to put in site colon reliance at home care calm – and you were to put an elder care or senior your care, you would see the content from their website come up. But unfortunately, they’ve been penalized for the words home care which is so important to them, because that’s what they do so it’s going to take a while for them to get the site clean back up, but there’s no harm in going to it.
It just had it had an issue: that’s been cleaned up, but now it’s going to take a while for it to recover. You don’t ever want that to happen forum linking so if you’ve ever been on a forum. Maybe one that’s about caregiving or something like that. You can put your signature in there and your link to your website. You can do that if you want to do that, that’s fine, just don’t go, have pay somebody to go into a million forums and leave a stupid comment and then put your website address.
That is considered spam. Hiding your sponsors, how do you having a sponsor is not a bad thing, so, if, if you have a sponsor of your website, you need to make it plain and clear the people coming to your website. This website is sponsored by blah blah blah and say something about them have a whole page about them. If you want, but don’t try to hide it, it’s just something that is worth just letting people know you have a sponsor.
That’s fine, robots.Txt flaws. A txt file is inside of your website, and this is more for the web developers. Sometimes web developers will put excessive blocking in there, so you have to just make sure that Google is not blocked in any way shape or form, and this can also be hacked. So it’s something that just you know to keep an eye on links to suspicious site. So if you have, if there are suspicious sites out there and you link to them – and this goes back to buying links – that’s when it usually happens – you don’t want to do that landing pages, it’s okay to use a landing page, and that means I paged.
It’s sort of a stand-alone page on your website to use it for advertising, but you don’t want to just have a bunch of landing pages. So it’s okay to use one! If you’re doing a Facebook ad or a google adwords, and it’s ok to use landing pages. People do it all the time, but don’t expect that they will ever rank for anything and they’re used for for pay-per-click advertising most of the time over optimization.
Now this is one then I see a lot and we just talked about that. Google doesn’t like to say too much of a good thing and over optimization Council usually means you’ve gone a step too far, and your bid to obsessively out SEO everyone else in your industry. So, in other words, if the articles and everything on your websites, a home care home care, senior care, senior care, senior care elder care elegant over and over and over again like mentioning it once or twice in an article is fine but mentioning it 10 x, 20 Times that’s way over optimized, you don’t need to do that malicious backlinks! This is an interesting one.
I haven’t personally seen this, but I’m sure it exists even in the home care world. Your site never deserves this penalty, but it’s something you should know about. If you’re, really unlucky and unethical competitor, may try to shove your site down in the search engine ranks by getting it penalized, the most common cause is malicious backlink campaign. In other words, they go out there and they buy links but they’re not linking to their own site.
They link them all the bad links to your site to try and destroy you, which is horrible and seems like a lot of waste of time. For someone to do, they must really not like you. I haven’t seen that in home care industry a lot, but I know it does happen: poor mobile websites, boy. We have seen a lot of this if you have an older website or one that was built even just a couple of years ago. If it’s not mobile optimized, it will be penalized as of april 21st.
2015. If you do not have a mobile, responsive website, you are automatically in penalty and everybody uses mobile devices now iPads and laptops are not mobile devices, but you’re our phones, your iPad, your cut your any kind of tablet, even if it’s a tablet that looks like a Laptop those are mobile devices, so people will not see you if you do not have a mobile, optimized and mobile responsive website having few outbound links.
You know we talked about not linking away to other sites too much, but on the other hand you want to have a few links to other thing, so your resources page we’re coming back to that. If it’s up to date and if it’s in good shape, then it’s not a bad thing to have: it’s not really necessary, but it is not a bad thing to link away if your source, if you have a source of your article, it’s okay to put a Link in to the original writer of the content that you source – it’s okay, to do stuff, like that, if your domain has a bad reputation, I see this people don’t know that their domain has a bad reputation, but it does you may have purchased.
The domain. Has a bad history and you don’t even know it and that could cause you problems when you try to build a new website around it. Unfortunately, this is often a dead end street. You would be best cutting your losses and buying another domain. Rather than throwing more money at the problem. Don’t try to clean up a historical disaster. Buy a new website address using a content farm. This is, I guess, something that people did.
They would have a get content put I’ll make all these different websites out there and all those websites would have links back to their website those other websites they would develop or had shallow low-quality content. You never want to. No one calls them content farms anymore, but you definitely do not only get involved in that. Beware of quick fixes – and this is my last sort of advice on this – don’t employ anyone that claims to have a magical, foolproof technique that will help you get your site to the top of the search engines.
The only way to rank well is to put in the ground work overtime, and that is the honest to god. Truth. If you don’t put in the work, you will never come up in search engines, so every problem will will require a slightly different solution. But here are some things you can try number one, don’t panic. Even massive website suffer from penalties. Your website isn’t the be-all end-all of life and you can work around it.
Disavowed troublesome links. There is a disavowal tool in google, you can google it and you can find a link to it. You have to know what those links are that you want to disavow. So if you have a bunch of bad links that are pointing to your website, you think they’re, awful and spammy and either you did it an SEO provider. Did it you don’t know who did it or you just bought the domain name, and it has a lot of bad stuff going to it.
You can ask Google not to count trouble. Some links that are harming your websites. You can put in a disavowal follow their directions. You can upload a text document with all the links you want to disavow and Google will take care of that get some links removed. Well, disavow is good, it’s not perfect, put in some legwork and try to get some of the links taken down. So if you can contact the other web provider to have them take down links, that’s a great idea request reconsideration.
If your penalty with a manual there is our algorithmic penalties, meaning Google doesn’t tell you why you’re penalized you have to guess at it. Usually we can come down to two or three things. Sometimes it’s a complete mystery, but there are reasons you can usually figure out. Why someone’s penalize? If you do enough research, if it’s a manual penalty, then Google will let you know they will put something in your search, console to warn you or do something.
So if it’s a manual penalty, that’s a pretty big deal and you have to clean up your site and then request reconsideration and then wait it out. Sometimes it takes Google a wild act on your changes and disavow request, and then it could take awhile to recrawl. Your site, in a few cases, it’s better to abandon a site rather than to fight the Google penalty. Your domain has been tarnished, there’s a little you can do, but most penalties can be fixed with a little effort, some hard work and an ethical approach to rebuilding your site.

He lives under a rock 165 million. People have listened to a podcast at least once Yeah, and around, like 32 % of Americans, are actually Tuned into a monthly podcast, So Nealy are you like One of those 165 million people listening to podcast, I’m actually listening.
To some right now, That’s ridiculous, Anyways Nealey. What podcast are you stoked on tuned into currently Right? I listen to a ton, but probably the most recent is Smart. Passive Income by Patt Flynn talks about all things, just business and smart passive income. All right, you are such a nerd, So I’m listening to a pretty cool podcast, its called Ain’t That Swell its a surfing podcast Get it. I hate it (, both laugh ), No, its great.
They talk to like surfers that are professionals they’re competing. They also just have like Self deprecating jokes: They also talk about just all things surf. So it’s great for me. When I’m not in the water and in between work and commuting, Also another thing that comes to mind access to new audiences, that’s actually one of the main motivation for why I want to do a podcast with Nealey’cause. Like this YouTube thing, you know its doing well its taking off but think about the Audience we could reach The new audience.
She’s been asking me for months With a podcast With a podcast, but it could also help you just better understand. Your target audience and we all like businesses, we all make money right. This could actually help you make money, so maybe you’re thinking About starting a podcast or if you already have one, maybe its time to start Monetizing it right ( money flying ), Because the competition out there for ears is getting fierce, so you’re going to need some best practices.
So let’s go over them right now. So the first step that you wan na take is actually make a plan. And define your goals So, for example, I mentioned, I listened to Ain’t That Swell the reason why I listen to that is’cause I wan na learn. More about surfing, You know, get in on the end, get barreled on the facts, but also, if you’re thinking, About starting a podcast, what is your expertise? What could you share And define that goal? What are you going to give the people Give the people what they want right And, following up with your expertise, you got ta pick a topic and you have to stick with it: People listen to podcast, For a specific reason, That’s a really good point Right.
So whatever your expertise is, keep it along that niche, keep it focused Yeah. So there’s a theme Yeah! Absolutely People want that they want to tune in maybe that monthly podcast that they’re always listening to, because they want to get scared with a spooky murder story So also when thinking about making a plan, its really critical to think about what format do you want this To be in and there’s a few ways, you could do this Think about the podcast.
You listen to the one that comes to mind right away, Obvious one: a monologue, — Right You’ve got to have the Right personality for it, but its just you sharing your expertise, take away the stage, Yeah, sometimes its easier to do, right’cause its just you with your topic, Yeah and your time, So there’s also interviews. Those are great. I find Those to be super engaging more so than the monologue Like, for example, love, Howard Stern.
I think his interview, Capabilities are awesome, got ta, give a little credit To the guest as well, I mean he has on the most fascinating, interesting people that he interviews, But you haven’t been on there yet Aw Nealey, There’s also a third form. Narrative love a good story. It does take a lot more work, but there’s some really Great stories out there that people are tuning into. I know we were talking about one recently Yeah one of my favorites Is Welcome to Night Vale, its just an incredible podcast that follows that narrative style So next step we’re going to talk about Branding your podcast, but first you got ta, come up with a name So important.
I was thinking about doing one for our business called Coffee and Kickflips got the perfect one. You ready, Uh sort of, Let’s go ( Emma laughs, ) Drop in with Emma Okay, not bad. I like it. I like it -You like that Dropped in So its like the skating reference I was kind of like do. I go with the coffee reference or both, but you don’t Wan na keep it too long, Yeah it works. You know I used to have a podcast in the past Seriously Seriously.
What was the name Craft Thinking? We basically drank a Different beer, every episode and talked about business. Ah, that’s so cool! Ah Get it Get it That’s cooler than mine, Okay, cool! So does that mean You had a website, then — Yeah for your podcast. I did Nice. I went the hard route And had a WordPress site, it was a little bit more difficult for those of you that aren’t tech savvy or just don’t want to Spend time managing it, there are tons of podcast hosts out there that are pretty inexpensive, that make it easy.
Just To upload your audio and its live for the world, So next up think about Your equipment right And what goes into choosing The recording equipment Ask yourself a few questions Number one: where are you going to record Yeah Two, How many people are actually going to be on your podcast And then three? What’s your budget Right, these things can get costly or it can be pretty inexpensive. Now, you’re.
Also going to want to think about the mic, you wan na use the two most popular Especially for beginners are the Blue Yeti Mic and the Rode Mics make it super easy to get started and almost anyone can use them All right. So when it Comes to actually producing your podcast there’s some great tips. First off just know. The first time is going To be awkward right But don’t read a script, you don’t wan na sound like a robot Right.
It does help to Have like bullet points of what you’re going to talk about Use those as conversation guides, not as exactly what you’re going to say Totally and also I Do this on my webinars, like no one can actually See me doing my webinars, I don’t do article, but I imagine that my audience can see me And that actually helps me to be more animated and Bring my voice to life and really add extra annunciation, etc, And I move my hands a lot.
So another thing: when thinking About producing a podcast running an interview and my favorite interviews, they’re the ones you can tell the host did their research like their questions are quality. You can always tell when someone has it And those are the most Engaging for me to read so when you do an interview, prep ahead, trust your gut and do your research so that you are asking Very quality questions that are engaging for your Audience to listen to So you’ve got your podcast all recorded, and now you have to edit it.
There are two thought: Processes you can do here, You can either leave as is, and just give the people everything or you can edit And now, if you’re going to be editing, you can use software like Audacity its a free, open source platform –. Oh, I’ve heard of that one Or GarageBand is a Native platform for Macs its what most beginners start to use when they are creating Their first podcast So when it comes to actually Publishing your podcast you’ll wan na submit your Podcast feed over to iTunes for apple users and Stitcher for android, Yeah and Spotify has also been one of the recent ones to let a lot of people onto the platform’cause they’re really trying to promote podcast too Yeah.
I just started to dabble with that. I noticed it recently. I was like oh there’s podcast on here too Right. I love Spotify. Now each of those platforms will have their own requirements and things that you need to do when you’re submitting such as, like your image, Size for your podcast art and then the audio quality itself Also fun fact: you can upload it to YouTube Yeah its just another source to distribute your content for someone that likes to really just read versus listen.
Now your success with your podcast is totally up to you. Yeah podcasting does take some time and effort, but it is totally worth it If you think podcasting Would be a good move for you go for it Comment below. Let us know, Like this article be sure to share it, Subscribe to our blog and ring that bell to see these episodes first. This is The Journey. We’ll see you next time.
The bad news, however, is that, even with these improvements, a lot of websites still won’t magically turn into speedy experiences. I mean think about it for a second, if you had a bus station and click on a link in your Twitter feed, you wait five seconds.
You wait. 10, you keep thinking. It must be amazing content. If it takes so long to prepare and write, then you get pulled back into reality. A full screen interstitial asking me to buy sunscreen, please, like me, dialog that’s, set to scratch from the content and make the page so small, you can’t even scroll and as if that was enough, a bunch of competing analytics scripts in the background at party hard.
Every second and kill your phone’s battery, or maybe the analytics scripts, just want to stop the phone from suffering and put it out of its misery quickly. I really don’t know in all seriousness, though: all of this wouldn’t be such a big deal for the publishers of those sites. If you were just willing to continue to suffer, but you don’t you’re furious about the current state so furious, then you either don’t bother and click off and studies to just a 40 % of users drop off after just three seconds or decide to install an ad Blocker clicking off is a lose-lose situation.
You are frustrated because you didn’t get to read the article. Your friends post it and publishers are frustrated because they didn’t get a chance to show you other great stuff and relevant ads to help pay to create that free content. An ad blockers might work for you as a reader, but hand the business model of many publishers that depend on ads to help pay for the content offered. But here’s the thing, publishers, obviously don’t – purposely – try to slow down pages.
They add all of these extras to try to increase the monetization of their site and attract more and more readers to help keep the site on business, and then they end up in a tough spot where they feel they need to decide between improving the user experience Or focusing on monetization and user acquisition, these overloaded user unfriendly web sites aren’t a new problem and some have tried to come up with solutions.
The FIR our walled gardens that lock you to a specific content distribution platform. Now you have to implement a custom solution for every single platform and your content cannot be discovered through search engines or link to from other websites by by open web, or you could create a native app and lose even more advantage. The web offers like effortless entry without install or easy distribution of content not terribly attractive either.
We felt this was a problem in need of a simple and elegant solution, a new way to implement an issue, a beautiful, streamlined, wicked, fast content web pages. Without all the extra clutter that is built on the openness of the web and doesn’t try to replace it, it allows everyone to participate and collaborate that publishes platforms and developers all stand behind and benefit from. That’s short.
What accelerated in the open the EM project dramatically improves the performance of mobile sites on the web, often to the point where their load appears to be instant. It’s an open source initiative that relies on existing web technologies and is built in collaboration with many different partners. Many technologies today come with super complicated, build processes, but not so with amp. In fact, an amp 8 is just a normal HTML website with a couple of restrictions and extras no build process, no extra step, because of that it doesn’t require a lot of additional work.
Unlike having to build custom, apps and products for a myriad of platforms and social outlets, in fact, if your website doesn’t use custom JavaScript and is mostly static, you probably don’t even have to create a second version of it for app. Every amp document includes the MJS JavaScript library that delivers optimum performance by adding and validating a few important rules in your markup when looking at an amp document.
The biggest difference you see is that some elements, like the image tag, are replaced with custom elements. That’s done to ensure staying in Fastlane in two critical situations. First, it allows MJS to control the entire load chain and prioritize certain elements and requests over others. In practice. This means that most third-party content and elements below default I’ll load it after the main content arise.
So your users can start reading as soon as possible. Second, ms custom properties strictly required a width, height or other aspect ratio defining attributes to be set. This way, mj’s knows exactly how your page will look like before any assets are loaded and can layout the page. In advance, this prevents the famous flash of unstyled content, the ugliness of a half lured website. That then starts to jump around by loading more stuff, as well as the need to re-render and do additional layout calculations, a browser task that can be very slow.
Every single imitational addition to amp documents is carefully designed to end up the speed of the page 211 and implement rail. A user experience focus performance model, but the chrome team came up with and because MJS comes with a built-in validator that locks to the console. It ensures developers Fastlane as nothing is more frustrating than a speed regression you discovering month later on an end page.
The content is always King and the user experience is Queen no compromises. But if you now say wait, a sec sounds great for users, but how does this help publishers, consider this users love fast content and amp allows platforms like Google, Twitter, Pinterest or LinkedIn to know for a fact that this content is fast, which they can then promise To users in return, if I know it only takes me five seconds to read that article, I do it much more often with many more articles, I’m happy.
The platforms are happy because I’m happy and the publishers is happy because they get to show me more content and just like that everybody wins get started. Writing your first and page today by checking out two tutorials in the description or head directly to am project org to learn more
Today we’re going to talk about avoiding certain behaviors when you’re doing your email, marketing, now email marketing very quickly. I’ll explain that, because that’s not what this article is about, but email marketing is when you start to market people through email, and you know yourself that you might see an ad and it might say: oh just click here and we’ll give you the free checklist on How you can lose 10 pounds in 30 days and you’re like yes, I want that.
Well, when you click it, it’s going to say, wait a minute. Give me your email address. Okay, you give your email address, you get your free thing and then you’re on an email marketing list and that’s what that’s all about. So, if you have decided to do online marketing, affiliate marketing anything online, there’s all kinds of different businesses you can get into you. Definitely want to use email marketing as part of your strategy for selling to your audience, but there are some behaviors you want to avoid when you’re sending out emails and we’re going to go over six of them.
Okay, the first behavior that you want to avoid when you’re sending an email – and you can look at this yourself when you get emails – start paying attention instead of seeing them as annoying. And I don’t want all these emails and I’m going to unsubscribe, get the emails and start following people that you like with their subject lines. Look like you like how they communicate and model those behaviors.
One of the behaviors you don’t want is needy. You do not want to act like you have to have the sale that you’re needy and you want it, but some people they don’t really act like they’re needy, but they try to act like they’re, not needy. Does that make sense and they come across as pretty desperate needy, so nobody tries to be needy, nobody tries to be desperate, but sometimes by trying not to be.
You come across that way, just be natural just offer whatever it is, that you have the answer to a solution to a problem that they have. You want to give them the solution to that problem, and you don’t have to be needy if they take it great. If they don’t want it, that’s okay, because you’re in the business of helping people solve problems. Think of that so don’t come across as needy. Don’t make exaggerated claims in your emails like your, you will earn a thousand dollars a week.
You can earn a thousand dollars a week, but I doubt if anybody will earn a thousand dollars a week, just learning how to do affiliate marketing in their first week. There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that has to be done. A lot of learning of skills that have to be done first, so that’s kind of exaggerated. In my opinion, alright, the next one is coming across as being sleazy um. I should have put a picture of a used car salesman.
I think sometimes they come across as being too pushy telling you how wonderful you look in that card, it’s the most perfect car in the world and you fall for it and then you get it home and it’s a piece of crap so don’t be pushy just Because you believe in that product or you believe in something or it’s worked for you, it’s not going to be the best answer for everybody, and I say that, especially in the healthcare industry.
Why are there so many different programs? Why are some people successful and some are because different people are successful with different plans, and it doesn’t mean yours is any better any worse. You don’t have to be pushy. Maybe it was the best thing for you, but it’s not the best thing for everyone. So just share it naturally of all the nice neat things. It’s done all the testimonials and then let that person decide the next one.
You don’t want to be manipulative, and this is very important. You keep hearing how it’s good to have a sense of urgency in your subject line, and that is true, but you don’t want to be sudden and unnecessary urgency. You don’t want to be fake about it say you know you only have 24 hours when in reality they have more than that. I know I sent out an email a month ago that they did have just 24 hours to respond whatever it was that I was offering was going away.
So it was a true urgent subject line and I did have a lot of people click it, but when they opened it they saw the truth that it really was going to be gone so make sure you’re not manipulating. When you have your headline like that, make it be honest, you don’t want to come across as cheap either you you want to make sure that whatever product that you’re offering in your email or whatever you’re offering in your email is not you don’t prequalify it, as Is just being cheap if that makes sense, when you start saying you know, yours is the cheapest, then it makes people think well, it must be the cheapest.
If that makes sense you you don’t want to over price things, but you want to be careful about coming across as cheap as well, so be careful there. All right, we’ve got two more one is far-fetched. It’s like too good to be true. If you can read those two little birds, stop your article now and the one says: what is the opposite of far-fetched and the bird on the right will give you a lots of different ones.
I’r going to bend over and read it, but she says believable plausible, realistic, likely possible, credible probable, imaginable natural and reasonable. That is the opposite of farfetch’d. Farfetch’d means it’s too good to be true. Like there’s there ain’t, no free lunch, there’s no magic pills. You know make sure what you’re offering is realistic and here’s the last one. You don’t want to be shady.
You don’t want to come across as unethical or legally questionable. Okay, so make sure that you follow those six behaviors. You avoid all six of them and you shouldn’t have any problems before you go make sure you subscribe to. My blog. Give me a thumbs up if this was helpful to you, and I do have a couple of autoresponders that you can use. If you would like. There’s active campaign action etics either.
One of them are great for starting your email marketing. They both have great training and, as a little bonus, I put my affiliate marketing mastery challenge training and you can see the cost there. You can hit that link as well thumbs up
