So I went with the pitch Queen because it was just available on every social media platform and the website when we were doing our brainstorming session and when I noticed that I said okay, let me buy everything and get every single social media handle right now and That’s really how the pitch Queen came about, but I love pitching products/services pitching investors for fundraising, like that was always my thing, so it has nothing to do with baseball or softball right.

It only has something to do with pitching, for you know anything sales related. You know a lot of people, think of it as a pitch, so that’s how the pitch queen came about excellent, and so what we want to talk about today is Michelle, helps people to and teaches them how to sell and have high value conversation and sell high Value services without feeling sleazy, pushy, yeah or desperate right, okay, so, let’s actually a really big one, because the less you you know I like to call it actually, let’s talk about the desperate one, because no one’s put it that way to me mm-hm, but when you’re Less desperate as it comes to raising money or you know, selling a higher value service, the the other client or the investor can sense that and when you don’t and I’m not saying like not care, hey, there’s that there’s a situation with.

The clients work with me or not take it or leave it, and when we come from that place, we’re actually doing our clients a disservice, because if they don’t work with you and you’re the expert. And this may be the time when they are starting to feel a little desperate, because they’re quoted that seemed it seemed achievable at the beginning of the year and now seems really daunting.

Just another number or they’re another quota, and they get that sense of desperation.

That’s where you actually lose more opportunities than win so one of the best ways. Then you can just try this right now if it’s get towards the end of the month, think about it as it’s just the first of the month or it’s the second month and when you detach from the desperation in that you actually don’t really need that client. That clients not going to make or break your quota, you want that client to help and serve them, and that’s actually the reason why you want them not for your benefit, so the desperation typically stems because it has something to do with you when really as sales Process has nothing to do with you yeah.

Not what you used to do on the 25th with that client and read to see what happens on your chance of your clients, engaging with you and you actually getting those sales yeah, because it’s a tough thing, sometimes for salespeople, because it’s like, if I say to, If I really need to get this deal done by the end of the month and I’m giving you all sorts of incentives and you’re just not biting, because guess what you don’t care about, whether you get it done by the end of the month.

Because for you, you maybe implement, you may have decided that yeah you’re going to buy this product or service, but you’re not going to implement it immediately. So you can buy it next month, month after to matter to you right and just because you’re offering them incentive that doesn’t get people to buy. What gets people to buy is understanding. What would what would move them to implementing it right now, because I only want to work with people who want to implement right now who have a problem.

They want solve right now, because people buy yes based on people, but people buy on the emotional side. So if you can’t connect the dots to their challenges to their emotions, an incentive isn’t going to move somebody that that’s actually not the thing that moves the needle it’s working on the other stuff to understand. Who is ready to make a change right now and focusing your effort and energy on those people versus the numbers or, as you said earlier, is bringing value to them by actually being able to demonstrate to them why a sense of urgency is good for them.

Why solving their problem earlier would be good for them right right, so one of the things that you could look at is: what’s it costing them by not doing it now. So, if someone told me that well, I want to think about. I want to this actually happened to me the other days, but yesterday, okay, so they said well. I just wanted to get information on your program and I said well, that’s great. I I really can appreciate you wanting to get more information on our you know program and how I work with accountants and all that other great stuff, but he had so much going on in his personal life.

I think there were some illnesses and other things that I’m not I’m not a window shopping place like I want to help people now, so you know I walked him through a nice process and and really being supportive of what he was going through with his parents And his family and all this other stuff – and I said you know – one thing you might want to consider is every time you put yourself second in line right, you’re, putting your family first, but you probably still have time that you could make it change, because every Month, you don’t make it change, it’s basically costing this guy about ten thousand dollars so by all means, but I will be here in the next three months I’ll be here in six months.

So when you realized that the 30 or 60 thousand dollars that it’s costing you by waiting, I understand the family stuff, but that stuff’s always going to be a part of life. We’re human beings mm-hmm. Those challenges are never going to go away, but we have control over certain things in our lives. So I said you know what, when you’re ready, then I’ll go through everything on how we can help you yeah you’re, not going to be a hundred percent present.

So I don’t want to waste my time if they’re not going to be coming for the plate and being a hundred percent present with what they want to do so a great way, depending on what you sell your product or service or whatever is what does it Cost that person to stay in the same place each month or each day right and and bringing that to life, because once he marinates on that, maybe in the next 30 days he might reach out.

But I didn’t make it about my quota sure he didn’t make it about my sales or that I have bills to pay her. I have anything I was coming from a place of serving him and helping him see the reality, because I can see the reality loud and clear you. He had like masters a few different designations and he’s only making very little money, but he could be making probably double if he did it on his own, but to take that leap of faith, basically, as the salesperson you’re helping people get past their fears.

Yeah. That’s really what we do right, ya, know and absolutely, and you know helping people realize that there’s never the perfect moment to execute something, because there’s only your best. Your best moment result is often just now is just to take the leap. So a close relation of desperate, obviously is pushing right. So how do you help people? Because sometimes the people don’t mean to be pushy they’re just you know they just get caught up and it says people get caught up with it or they they.

You know, they’re. It’s it’s tough right. Sometimes it’s a sighs! Well, you know it’s tough, to to wait for the process or to go execute the process. Sometimes. Is that there’s that temptation to take shortcuts, which immediately translates into pushiness right and when we take shortcuts or we come from a place of desperation? It comes off as pushy to the client. So one of the ways to not be so pushy is not make this whole process about yourself.

So once you can make it not about your quota once you can make it not about what day of the month it is what month of the year, it is depending on how you’re going to get your bonus. That’s where you’re going to come from a place of not being pushy, I was told actually yesterday, you know woman wanted a refund of her deposit and she said Michelle when you got my deposit, I was you were pushy. I said you know what I can completely appreciate that and what I found is that, typically, when people make decision, that’s where your decision-making process as the client can come across feeling pushy because, like you were saying earlier, there’s no better time than the present, and so When you can help someone get past, their fear break through their fear, help make a decision.

They might come months later and think that that was pushy, but ultimately it was actually just them having a decision of a yes. I want to do this or a no and it’s not being pushy, it’s actually just their reaction to them, making their own decision that someone just guided them and said you know what I I can completely appreciate that sometimes that might come off pushy right and acknowledging That you think one of the biggest things salespeople miss all the time is that you don’t acknowledge how someone feels and that way that they feel is real.

It might not be the truth, but that’s just the way it comes across. So how can you, as the salesperson just be really calm and understanding and understand how they might feel and that you know what hey I don’t want to their eyes that I don’t want to work with anyone who thinks that I’m pushy, so you know what. Actually, I don’t think we’re going to be a good fit to work together. So that’s no problem and then people right, that’s the opposite of being desperate and then they’re like oh whoa.

Wait what what did you just say: yeah, no you’re! I was really pushy. I apologize, I completely understand a lot. Some clients feel that way when they’re making a decision and that’s totally okay. I honor and respect that, and I wish you nothing but the best, but I like amazing the results you’re going to get what I like about that. But I like about that. Michelle, though, is is in some ways you’re taking the person back to the dis to the decision and why they made the decision because you’re correct it’s very easy later on to go III.

I didn’t really want to do that and they push me into it. The reality is, you did want to do that, but maybe you just need to be taken back to what drove that decision in the first place right. What was their challenge? What was their problem? What did they want to create in their life? Why did that investor want to put money into that company versus this company? It one time passes they’re. All they have to do is blame oast people blame other people, sure right how many people take responsibility for their own actions.

Well, your clients are probably not going to do that so taking them through the process of either a acknowledging where they were and that they made a decision and great. You don’t want to work with people who think you’re pushing anyway and would keep it moving or take them back to where they were when they made. That decision, like you said, remind them of their problems, start asking those questions that tie it to.

Why did they make that decision at that time and let them realize? Oh, I made that decision. You weren’t really pushy right, yeah yeah, it’s great because you can say: hey, listen, maybe we’re not a good fit to work together, but just out of interest. How are you going to solve the issue that you wanted to solve in the first place, like yeah, I’m or just come from a place that curiosity, I’m really curious like? How are you going to solve that problem that you know make it specific whatever they told you, but I’m just really curious.

I would love to know because I think I have a few other people that might want to take that path too and the other one who said you had a bit about their feeling. You know without selling without feeling sleazy – and I guess this is an interesting one, because this comes down to sometimes the percent. The self perception that salespeople right right, because they’ve, because they’ve been bombarded in many ways with negative cultural stereotypes of what salespeople are and they’re.

So and sometimes they’re so desperate to avoid it that they almost manifest it right right yeah I mean the whole salesy part. Is your sales beliefs right it’s or, if you’re like in a rut right, like maybe I’m being too pushy, maybe I’m being too salesy, but I don’t have all the time in the world to go into it today, but I do if you go fell without fleas. Mileage Tracker Setup | 2019 Business Planner |#ECDeluxeMonthlyPlanner

First I’ll tell you about the business planner in a moment, so I’m going to be using this. This actually came with a planner that I got already, but it didn’t come with this specific planner. This one came with my Erin Condren life planner for 2019.

It has the woven, wonder, pattern on it, I’m going to use it because I’m going to be making a little chart and then this pin is the pilot. Ultrafine point permanent marker and I’m going to be using this on some of my Christian design stickers, which I’ll show you in just a moment and then also this Erin Condren, dual tip marker, which is why my finger is blue at the moment, because I just filmed Another article before and tried to clean up something and made him whatever um and then also I have this washy sample from my shop link is below as well as a little coupon code if you’re interested – and this is kind of like a transportation washi, I believe, Is what I ended up, calling it, and then I have this sheet from a coffee break planner that has like these little road stickers and then some little cars, which I think is awesome.

I’m also going to be using these two sticker sheets from chrissy and designs, and I will link her shop below as well as everything all the other sources that I’m using today, including the pins. And this is kad – 0, 0, 2, 3, 2. And then I’m almost out of this sheet, I always get like really excited when I finish a sheet, I’m not going to finish the sheet today, but I get very excited. I know some people feel really really sad when they finish a sheet, but I feel the complete opposite.

So this one is kad: 0, 0, 4, 8, 5 and then the planner that I am currently using for my business is an Erin Condren, deluxe monthly planner and I got the 12 I got. It only comes in a 12-month version. I’m trying to like get my words right. It only comes in a 12-month version, but I did get January through December and I got the maximum amount of notes pages possible and I believe it was a hundred and twenty.

Don’t quote me on that, but you could get a ton of notes pages. I will also leave links below to all the other things that I have set up in this plan. Basically, half the planner is notes pages and I have done a bunch of other tracking setup in those notes. Pages are ready, so, let’s get on to the article. So I’m going to start by using the washy and actually, let’s, let’s move some things around and make it a little bit easier for everybody to see make sure the whole class can see.

Oh, don’t zoom out, you got ta zoom in okay, perfect, alright! So this is like a little road scene and then I use this little bookmark from Chris or not Christian today, as well whoo all right start over again. I use this little bookmark from Erin Condren. It’s just one of those snap in ones there you go. I’m just kind of smoothing out the washi all right, and then I thought underneath that this little road, washi you’re, not washing about Road strips sticker from coffee break planner, would look really really cute and I think it’s about the right size, even though I I realized On the washi there on a road, but when I have things like arty in my arsenal, I love using them up.

It’s like one of my favorite things. Oh there’s like a little tail there we go, oh, that I feel like that. Just like really defines it a lot more. I like that a lot very cute, okay, so on to the tracking I am going to be putting in a few different things, I’m going to use oh darn it – maybe I won’t use these Bert Bert Bert. Actually, yes, I can still make it work. I was going to use the purple, but then there’s no purple in the washi.

I thought that there was a little bit of purple, but it’s more like a primary color situation, but there is there’s some blue. So I’m going to use this blue and then I’ll use some other colors here, so I’m going to put in date destination miles and then, like a total like a cumulative total at the end actually know, I’m suddenly used the same sheet, but just like at the Same type of sheet, but just a different one, if I want to use, I think I’m just going to use the yellows like something in this spectrum of the yellows, because I got that little ambulance right there, okay, so now I have them all written down.

Also from that coffee break planner thing and then just put these two little blue cards on there. Cuz there’s a blue car here. You know you guys know. I, like my consistency and know my car is not blue. Oh my gosh, I’m! So sorry you were not in the frame. Oh I’m horrible! I’m sorry guys this whole time once in a while.

I should look up at the viewfinder I mean just once in a while, but clearly I am a failure, but now you can see what I was working on. Oh my gosh, I feel so stupid whoops. It up see. Oh well. I hope you guys could forgive me also. I just noticed this. I love this little blue car. I’m going to put this next to this little destination too cuz. You know cuteness and whatnot. How to Find Long Tail Keywords on Google Adwords

Is it actually tells you the projected monthly searches with no costs, so it just tells you if you’re free and you can just make a Google AdWords account with any gmail email. So you basically just go up here and you sign in make an account whatever you have to do, and you can go up to this tab up here and the tools and then you can click keyword, planner and I’ll. Bring you right here. So, basically, there’s three different options here: there’s search for keywords using a phrase, and this basically allows you to type in a keyword that you know you want to find the search volume for, and it will give you a massive list of like you know, 700,000 different Keyword phrases that are very similar and related to that and kind of helps.

You, you know, come up with new ideas or new keywords, for you know PPC campaigns or for no specific niche articles or web pages that you want to build out, and then you also get search volume data trends for just one, so you can just type in One keyword and find it there, and this is kind of the same thing where you can do a new keyword and get combinations or different keywords that have to do with it.

So what I like to do is actually just go into this, and this might look confusing at first, but don’t worry about any of it other than up here and we’re just going to type in keyword. So let’s say you know, I want to make a youtube article and I want to make a youtube article about. I don’t know Instagram followers, so I actually made a article about this the other day and I actually did this process.

So this will kind of be a good example for me to go through you with, but let’s just set it. I wanted to do a article about Instagram followers, so I can just type in Instagram followers here, and this is basically going to plug it into the Google system and give me the feedback for monthly searches. So, as you can see here, average monthly searches for this keyword – or this keyword phrase is 1.5 million, which is absolutely insane you’re, obviously never going to rank for that and if we want, we can actually just pull this up right here.

So you can just go against the grand followers, and so this right here is all the top. These four right here are actually paid google ads, but down here, Instagram followers and screen followers. These are all like the top ranked pages for this keyword, so these are getting like massive traffic. If this is a 1.5 million monthly search keyword and this right here, the competition – you don’t need to pay attention to that.

Unless you’re trying to run a Google ad for it, basically that’s just the competition for paid, so you know the competition for these top four right here, so you don’t have to worry about that. If you’re trying to organically rank but it’ll, probably be pretty low anyways as you’re doing something very niche specific or a longtail, and if you don’t know what a longtail keyword is, it’s basically like you know instead of Instagram followers.

So if we go here, average monthly searches and flip it around let alone so these are all like the lowest ranked one. So a longtail keyword would be something like alright, so I searched through a little bit and I found a couple examples so right here it says: buy 100 real Instagram followers. Now this isn’t like the longest tailed keyword, but it is pretty specific, so buy 100 real Instagram followers is the phrase it has 90 outer searches a month and the competition’s.

Obviously, really I because there’s probably a lot of you, know apps or different things where you can buy followers that are paying to be advertised for this keyword phrase, but if you’re trying to rank for something organically, you know all of these keywords got is like just Look for something very specific! Basically, so you knowns like how to get followers on Instagram in the month of May or how to get followers on Instagram for a car page like basically, there is so many super specific keywords you could find on here.

There’s 700 of them and you can actually export this list. You can download it onto a excel file of CSV and you can just sort it on there if you don’t feel like scrolling through this, but you know just look at the average monthly searches find something very, very, very specific and the more specific you go, the Easier, it will be to probably rank for it and that’s just kind of a good way to gauge how you should title and optimize your articles or your webpages for keywords.

So you know, if you’re, just targeting this keyword right here, Instagram followers with your new Instagram. Well, YouTube article or webpage you’re, probably never going to rank on here, guys so you’re not really helping to grow at all. You know, but if you rank for more Instagram followers like just because I forgot enough, I don’t know like just different types of longtail keywords that you can rank for.

You could rank for this way easier than you could rank for this. So basically, you’ll just be getting a high ranked on the Google search platform and you’ll be at the very top for any people that search that term. Rather than being you know, on the seventieth page for people that search this term, so you’ll get a lot more clicks, a lot more engagement and these people will be a lot more high quality because they’ll be coming in on a keyword.

That’s just very, very, very specific, so you know if you have how to grow Instagram followers for an automotive page, and that has a hundred searches a month and you rank on the first page, all of those people that click on your link are going to be. Looking for exactly what you have, you know, if you rank on this page, which you never will, but just in a hypothetical sentence, if you do you’ll get a lot of clicks.

Obviously, but all these people are just going for a broad term of Instagram followers. You know think of it like a pay-per-click campaign, you know it’s just the more specific you are, the higher quality of leaves or people are going to be, coming to your site and they’re going to be looking for exactly what you have if it’s super specific. So just keep that in mind when you’re making online content, you want to optimize it for longtail keywords, and this tool is just a really good tool to use to help.

You find you know the search volume for different things and also just to help you find new ideas. You know you wouldn’t think of any of these, but Google just gives them to you for free with their monthly search on it so and beyond. Just organic. You can obviously run paid for you can search or sort by competition or Sophia suggested bid. So this is a cost per click bid, and could you Amazon the exact same thing, but it’s just the Google ad will just be words.

You know. So when you look down here, it’s just words. Obviously no pictures, but you know the possibilities are pretty much endless, and this is just a very good tool tons of information for you to use, especially if you’re going into affiliate marketing. This is huge. I know I’m going to be utilizing this and for my YouTube page trying to rank articles, so hopefully this is helpful for you guys if you have any questions or want me to go over something further with you.

Why Are So Many Indie Artists Against Marketing Themselves?

Typically a like a very common piece of advice from email.

Marketers is in your emails, like automation, sequence. When someone joins your email lists like the set of emails, they get automatically right there after the first thing you should do is first of all get them to white list, your emails, so they come through the second of all. Let them know the title of your next email or open a loop that you know that they know in their mind: okay, the next email I want to be looking out for because it has this ticket right, so they’re in stance, sheeting a behavior pattern and then Maybe before that email closes, they’re really good, get you to click the link over to a social media, just just to get you in the habit of a clicking, a link in an email from them.

So right, there they’ve said open my emails when they come in because something good is inside and clicked links in my emails. You’re already doing it and they probably give me something cool when you put that first link just to make it like a positive experience. Dopamine floods, whatever neurons, were used in that action and reinforces the pattern in your brain right there, like that’s, a common thing, is initiating behavior patterns but really to make it sound far less nefarious and complicated people do what you tell them to or ask them to Write you ask someone to do it there more likely to do it than if you never asked so ask and ask so many studies on that.

It’s like, but it’s a it’s common sense. It’s like most people are, most people want their their audience to do something that they’re unwilling to ask them to do, and it’s something like yo you’re. If you’re unwilling to ask them, why would they be willing to do it? You know why do you think that is? Why do you think so many people are afraid to ask people are too cool for fucking, school and school.

They think that, like it’s uncool to ask, they think it’s T. I mean a lot of people, think it’s uncool to market them. So a lot of people think that a lot of people have been weird preconceptions about what their brand is and they fail to look at the people they admire and ask themselves if their standard that they’re holding themselves to is exemplified in the behavior of that person. That they admire their combo because it probably isn’t it probably, is that that person they might either come up there doing a collab with you know, they’re doing a collab with converse tomorrow and they’re, going to drop it on their Instagram story and they’re going to ask You to buy they’re going to be far more forthcoming with their desires for their fan base and their promotional messages.

Then the average artist we need to ensure they don’t have this weird hang-up about, like being cool. You know yeah. I hate to use this word because it gets what you so much today, but I definitely feel like it’s toxic and to artists to have these these desires right, but then you essentially philosophically, are against doing the things that it takes to get to that. At that point, right, which is marketing and not, and it’s in fan bases as well.

I these, like, I said too, cool for school type, spaces of specific, like some parts of music or culture aren’t as against. They are, but there’s some of them that are totally against it, like I just an ad where well, that was actually one of my artists. So the article, the guy we had he he ran the ad. A lot of people were like yeah. I found this do an ad, but there was one dude that found it through the ad and talked about he loved the song, but he hated the fact that he was running ads.

What kind of you would even know about this? If I wasn’t running an ad, but you hated the fact the artist was running because he was, it was a very uh. Let’s just like anti-establishment type artists brain you know. I just think that like because there’s so many people who we look up to who have no problem like selling themselves, you know, and but when we become when we begin to think about ourselves as a brand – and I know that’s because like when I was a Kid who it was like this, I know the feeling of being like ya know when I picture might come up in my wildest imagination and night.

It doesn’t involve me having to do anything. It’s like I’m the fucking funds bro. You ever read Happy Days slide in there. I hit the jukebox and I don’t have to put a quarter in it because it just starts playing my song automatically and a leather jacket. Everything just comes to me in waves. I don’t even even ask, but it’s a brother, that’s not real life like Gary Vee is one of the more successful people that way a broad majority of people have no problem looking up to they don’t say it’s corny and he’s out there doing all these things.

That these artists think are uncool and he’s way cooler than them like most of these people who think this shit is not cool, they haven’t done anything cool with their career, yet do some cool shit and then act too cool yeah, and I can definitely say I Underst, I understand it just because of some of my younger years, as you say, I know exactly what you like and if the sad part is a lot of, it is really kind of justifying some of your own discomforts and securities to a point, as opposed to You know just doing the work, but if you think logically enough, you just realized, you know this doesn’t make sense.

Anybody that you actually like feel they’re, cool and you’ll. See that this doesn’t this rule doesn’t hold yeah go, get their social. You ever seen it you ever seen my egg apps first big special, he says yeah, I don’t know I was waiting to see which it would. You were cool you’re going to. He was like the worst champ in the world. He was like well make some money. First and then we can do all we can do all that cool, especially using Gary being an example, because nobody sells throw look at.

Will Smith look at the rock look at like all these men. Look at Kevin Hart bro, oh my god, Kevin Hart has no problem. Asking you to go check this out on Instagram or go buy this or go see his new movie. None of these people have a problem with it and they’re, not cool. Well. How do you like to be fair on the other side, all right, how do you can? How do you get yourself seen? Well, how do you communicate and really give them a text to your brand without feeling like you’re, you’re begging me? I don’t know, maybe that’s what some people are trying to avoid.

I think that try to worry and devise you know bad bad sales. People feel like they’re, begging, good sales. People know that they’re selling, so, like you know, if you’re bad sales person, like you know, there’s training for that, like can become better catchy, like I don’t know like it’s just crazy. That is crazy. This is crazy that, like these, there are like there’s parts of the culture that respect it.

There’s parts of the culture that respect salesmanship hustle. You know what I mean and know how to do all that, but but yeah I mean I just feel like. I miss feeling a lot of people feel like maybe like insecure about asking people for like asking people to take the action that they actually wanted them to take. You know I get it man, I think like to me when it comes to cells. One thing I always resort back to it.

I can’t remember the first person I heard say, but it’s common in salesmanship, where they just basically leave back to the fact that, like if you believe in the product, why would you not tell somebody about it? Yes, that’s what I actually just posted online

Tá bem então esse que vai ser, o meu título beleza tem que ser um título chamativo também não adianta você só é colocar as palavras chave, o seu título não fazem, nenhum, sentido, ok, beleza, então, agora, você, já, tem, o primeiro passo é definir as palavras chave Principal e secundário depois criar, o título faz 13 que é você pesquisar, o conteúdo né e criar um roteiro do seu vídeo gravar, o vídeo fazia também nené a capa do canal uma, dica, você fazer, a capa é você por exemplo pesquisar aqui e ver que tipo De capa o pessoal está fazendo tenta fazer uma bem, diferente sabe pra você chamar, a atenção nosso pessoal está colocando sempre, o fundo mas o vermelhinho assim você coloca um, fundo diferente, para você, poder, se destacar então, você faz, a tanga e depois que fizer também que Vai fazer você vai é começar a trabalhar na no próprio vídeo.

Intro to ARIA — A11ycasts #13

So, for instance, I’ve got this input here, wrapped in a label and that’s going to produce a visual UI like the one that you’re seeing here this radio button.

But that’s also going to create a spoken UI based on the built in semantics of those native HTML tags. Now, if you’re not quite sure how all of that happened, or why those semantics matter be sure to check out our previous episode on semantic. So I’ll include a link down in the show notes and we can also maybe drop in an annotation up here for you to click on. I just I have some background on how semantics work and why those are important in the first place now.

This is all good and everything, but there are instances where a simple layout in native HTML just aren’t going to cut it and so to handle these situations. We have the web accessibility initiative accessible, rich internet applications, spec, which is a bit of a mouthful. So you oftentimes see this referred to as wai-aria or maybe just Aria, so audio works by allowing you to specify attributes on elements which then modify the way.

Those elements are translated into the accessibility tree. So let’s take a look at a really basic example. Just to show how this works, so, if you create a a plain checkbox a screen reader is going to announce it. As you know, a checkbox it’ll tell you what its label, if it has one like we do in this case, where it says, receive promotional offers and it’ll also tell you the the state of the checkbox right, whether it’s checked or not, but let’s say you’re in A situation where, for whatever reason, you need to implement your own check box using something like like a div right, maybe you need to style it in a really special way.

So, in this case, we’ve got a div checkbox we’ve created here, and the screen reader is going to give the user really like no indication that this element is meant to be a checkbox. It might announce the the text inside of the div there, but it’s not going to tell you the role of the element. I can say it’s a checkbox. It’s also not going to tell you the state so excited you sure is going to be able to see these visual cues and they’ll be able to figure out that this is a checkbox.

But nothing is going to be announced to our screen reader users and that’s a really big problem. So using Aria, we can actually tell the screen reader about this extra information here up at the top, I’ve got some custom checkboxes just created using gives down at the bottom. I’ve got some checkboxes using the native input element so using voiceover. Let’s see how these are announced differently: voiceover, I’m chrome, custom checkboxes in custom check intense group with three items there and then slices group with two items: heading ten times check, check box and then slices uncheck, checkbox voiceover off.

So you see there that the the div elements just are announced as groups. It doesn’t indicate to the user in any way that these are checkboxes where it’s the native element. It indicates it’s a checkbox and it tells you the state whether it’s checked or not. So, let’s see if we can add some Aria to improve upon this so over in my dev tools, I will select these the checkbox elements and I’m going to start off by just giving them a role of checkbox and I’m also going to give them a state Of Aria, checked of either true or false, depending on you know the actual state of the element there.

So if a role checkboxes to the one Aria checked equals false and let’s try it again using the screen reader voiceover, I’m dropping custom. Checkboxes 10 pens check the checkbox and then slices contract checkbox always go over all. So adding that role and Aria checked attribute causes the middle Union accessibility tree to actually have the desired role and state without changing. You know anything else about the nodes, appearance or its behavior, which is pretty awesome right, we’re just adding in additional semantics using Aria.

So in terms of the accessibility tree, what ru does is it really allows you to subdue like tree surgery? So you take the accessibility tree as generated by plain HTML. You add Aria to that, and now you get a different accessibility tree and it may be subtly different or it could be radically different, depending on what attributes you use, however, keep in mind that this is really the only thing that ru changes.

It doesn’t change anything about how the element behaves on the page. For instance, it’s not going to suddenly make your element focusable, it’s not going to add keyboard event, listeners for you or anything like that, or you does not change behavior in any way. It really only is for adding in additional semantics. So if you, you know, if you’re making a custom control, it’s really on you to make sure you go back, and you also add in that keyboard support so you’re kind of like maintaining that that consistent experience for your users.

So now that you understand more about what ru is and kind of some of the basics of how it works, I want to cover some of the things that Aria will. Let us do in our application, as we saw in that check box example. Aria can add semantics to an element where no native semantics already exists. So, for instance, you take a div element, it has no built-in semantics, but we can use Aria to be able to role.

We can use already to give it a check State, for instance, build a custom check, box or radio button, or something like that, or you can also be used to modify existing element semantics. So, for instance, let’s say I’ve got a button element that I want to. Actually turn into more like a toggle button, so I can on/off switch type of control. I can give it a roll of switch. I’m give it an already check state of true or false, and now I’ve sort of modified the semantics of this control, and now it’s more of a even more specific kind of thing.

It’s like a toggle button right to switch button. It’s important to note here, though, that the switch rule is part of the newer aria 1.1 spec. So, as I’m recording this, you know there’s probably a number of assistive technologies which do not support this role. Just yet, just like all web standards. Aria is you know, constantly evolving and advancing to try and keep pace with new UI patterns, so that’s something important to realise as well right, if you, if you come across an aria rule, you also want to check for the support of that role in assistive technology To make sure it’s widely supported, and then you can use it another thing or you can do is it can express semantics and UI patterns which really like don’t already exist in HTML, and I think this is where Aria kind of comes into its own Aria.

Basically, will let you create accessible widgets, which are not possible using plain HTML. To give you an example. Here is like a tree: widget component, okay, we can take an unordered list and add all your rules of we tree item and group and add an already expanded attribute to a few those children and now we’re expressing the more rich semantics of this tree element and Again, there’s no tree tag in native HTML, so it’s something that you know we wouldn’t be able to build otherwise without aria, which is really important.

Another thing we can do and as we saw this in our previous episode on labeling or you can add extra labeling and descriptive text to an element right to give that element an accessible name. So, for example, if you have like an image only button which doesn’t use an actual image element, so you don’t have access to an alt attribute or anything like that to put alternative text on it. You can still use Aria.

You can use Aria label to give that element its own accessible name, and that way you can have it be announced properly by a screen reader to those users, or you can also express semantic relationships between elements which go beyond just like standard, dom parent-child sibling relationships. So, for example, a more complex relationship is something like this element controls that element over there.

Even if they’re not like you know, direct parent-child or anything. So in this case right here, I’ve got a button which controls whether a particular part of the page is visible or hidden, and it does this in the form of kind of a disclosure widget. You can see here where it shows advanced settings. We’ve specified using Aria controls – that’s actually controlling this group of elements down here for these Advanced Settings checkboxes.

So even though they’re not parent-child, they’re, actually sort of like siblings. We can create this new relationship indicating this element over here controls that elements over there, which is really cool and finally, Aria, can make parts of the page live, so they can inform assistive technology right away when something changes – and we saw this in our previous episode On building alerts, so we add role equals alert to some element.

We drop some new content into it and then it’s going to announce that immediately through assistive technology to the user.
