So I’m moving to Bali, which is absolutely true, literally and less than or in 24 hours, and have a flight to Bali right.
So here’s how I start out right now. Here’s the thing. The first thing that I want to mention to you guys is in all my pitch emails. I have three call to actions on my link, whatever offer you’re promoting, I like to have to recall two actions right so to increase click-through rate in the first or the second um article. Remember, you’re, going to have three type of readers right, you’re going to have one person could care less about what your actual email says.
They’re literally just going to say what is this person offering? What is this person trying to tell me? That’s number one number two you’re going to have somebody who’s going to read your a whole entire email and throughout your email. If you write a compelling story, then what the news they’ll simply go ahead and actually click your link midway through because you’ve sold them through your compelling story, number three is you’re going to have people that skip to the end.
They don’t want to see the bullcrap. There were so many times I felt like giving up right, so the person reading this message might resonate with this right.
They might think if they’re, actually in online business already, you might be thinking to themselves here, you’re right, I felt like giving up soup at a point. I even got a desk job for two weeks during my deepest and darkest times in my digital marketing journey. Now, the reason why I’m showing I’m put on putting myself down back to the level of basically when I just put myself in their shoes right to where these are real problems, that people go through with in this industry.
So if you’re, just like. Oh, here’s the easy way to get to make money online or get-rich-quick where it become a millionaire or whatever, whatever, whatever right, it’s not going to work, because it’s not relatable. This is authenticity. Authenticity sells when you’re actually showing yourself being a real person going through real struggles and real problems right and then eventually transitioning to that hero.
It’s called the hero’s journey, guys, I’m all successful screenwriters in Hollywood use this storytelling form that called the hero’s journey when the hero, literally like Superman, went from Clark Kent to freaking saving the world right. So that’s what I’m portraying this message and I’m and you’re you relate with the person you put yourself in their shoes showing them that you have your own hero within yourself right, meaning the same things that I went through your going to right now, and this is How you get there right? This is how you get to that hero so um after feeling like pulling the trigger meeting a gun – and this is all facts.
This is true right on the train ride home from work. I called my boss gag. I hate saying that word and told him dot dot. I’r sorry! I can’t do this. I quit. I wasn’t where I wanted to be financially so I still had to pick up a job, but I went to what I knew best sales. If I ever had to work a job ever again, I’d have to do sales. I ended up stacking up enough money to slowly start adding a budget for my marketing business and got got it rocking again. Eventually, I started catching traction. I handed in my resignation and left two weeks later to start traveling the world working remotely from anywhere with my internet business. It just so happens that this email took fifteen minutes, but again I’m using this because I’m basically playing to that person because you have three types of people – are going to read your emails. The person who needs to be sold right through your storytelling, the person who just wants instant access and your beginning and then the person on the back end who’s not going to read this.
They just want this to get rich quick, get rich, quick person either. Today, I’m willing to get I’m willing to sell any one of them right, but you want those different type, different, three different types of approaches to sell those three types of people with those three different call to actions right and um. So 10, 15 minute emails a day like this one, making thousands of dollars in commissions traveling the world full time, so it’s very benefit rate and what I, what I want to do is you want to always put the put the benefit rich into them.
So one thing that I need to change in this email, which I will after this article, is in all these eyes. I can so or eyes I’m leveraging. You also want to add you what I mean by you. Is you want that person, even if you’re doing a weight loss, product or whatever you’re selling right you want this to be about them? You want the email to me about them, not about you, the more use you have and the more benefit rich and desire, rich, meaning, helping the person actually reading your content, get a specific goal or desire they’re going to be more inclined to actually make a purchase With your email marketing, that’s why, instead of if you so you see how I said if you want access to the same system, I’m loving to wear to the four hours a week, writing full-time, and then I want to add something like this and, more importantly, portent Li, how you can achieve the exact same results so guys that’s going to go ahead and increase conversions because I’m making it beneficial to them.

That’s why I always have content within my emails only time. I do three liner emails like one two three lines and then call to action and then keep it moving is when, like I’m, rushing – and I don’t have time in the day to actually write an email. But I do have to get an email to my list because I commit to email my list daily. That’s the only time I’ll do a three-letter, but for the most part, usually spend ten to thirty minutes to create an email per date and get in the habit of writing daily emails to where your list, your list might be bigger mine’s, it might not be.
Who knows at the end of the day, even if you have 40 subscribers and you’re getting a 10 percent open rate, which is only for people opening your emails per day? At the end of the day, you want to build these success habits early right, um to where, when you do start to actually build a list right 80 and I and subscribe yesterday 15 today, um 8,000 people right you’re already in the habit of writing an email You’re already in the habit of writing your emails on the daily, so that way like the you’re just going to make more money, the more the more people that get on your list right.
So that’s that’s! I kind of rambling. At the end I apologize but um. That’s it guys, that’s that’s the magic formula now just some some things that I want to cover right where people are going to be asking this right. I know this is going to come up because people are asking things like this before now. The first thing that I want to go ahead and break down to you number one is value value, value, value majority of your emails that you’re emailing your list should be value based emails and an example of a value based.
Email is simply the same type of sales copy, but the axe, a link that you’re setting people to is value-based content. It’s not trying to sell them something so something that can help your person in your niche get a mute, a desired goal, meaning help them generate more leave. Whoever it is right, if you’re in the weight loss niche for a cinema tips on losing weight, send them articles blog articles, all that extra stuff.
You want to continuously provide value. That’s number one, two to one ratio to value, one to value one! That’s my shit about okay, one pitch now out of your pitch emails. There’s the RVL formula, the RVL formula is simply our four results right. This isn’t a results. Email, v4 value, l4 lifestyle now results is simply. If I’m talking about hey, I made a thousand dollars today: here’s how you break it down and I go out and pitch them saying if you want to generate a thousand dollars in a day check this out right or if you don’t have results.
Yet that’s what people are going to ask new Eric? I don’t have results. I get it. Leverage somebody else’s results talk about somebody within your company, who’s, even lost weight, and the reason why I keep a lot of weight loss because that’s one of the biggest missions in life period, right, health, wealth romance or if your niche is um. If your niches like make money online and mitt leverage people in your business right talk about a story, write a compelling story about somebody who went from rags to riches within your company and say: look they just made three thousand dollars today.
You can too right, and then you say you, you do the thing that I just explained within this email to get them to take action on your email. Number three um is lifestyle value. This is more so in the combination of both of lifestyle value. The value is me, motivating them kind of giving them picking them up when they’re down, and even if – and this is how you can tell its value. Even if somebody does not click my link did they attain value from this email? Absolutely, how did they gain value from it, because it’s motivation its uplifting them? It’s basically, if they’re already promoting a business opportunity, they’re still going to be like you know what I can do this.
This guy is doing this ba ba ba ba ba okay value. That’s how it’s right number two and his lifestyle, I’m talking about my lifestyle, I’m talking about traveling full-time, I’m talking about the way I travel full-time is by this actual offer right here within here right, so your pitch emails are going to be results, value lifestyle! Remember that results, value lifestyle and then your actual value emails to just be redirecting people to buy the concept within your niche.
Lastly, to the point of people who are saying, will air what, if I’m not living the desired lifestyle guys you can still present yourself as an authority simply by consistently presenting yourself as a leader. Not long ago, my guest Gina Hill suffered from migraine cystic acne, joint pain, fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s, thyroiditis, pulsatile, tinnitus chronic fatigue and depression all while eating. What she thought was a healthy diet, but when Gina, who is actually a pharmacy, technician learned how to cut lectins from her diet, she was actually able to turn things around.
You know, as a result of all this, she created leptin free creations by Gina, a website and an Instagram account with tasty lectin free recipes and has even launched a lectin free revolution in her own community in a warrant in Virginia today. We’ll discuss what it takes to go: leptin, free and how to eat right without feeling deprived. I think that’s a really big issue for everyone. That’s actually why I do this and you actually flew out here to to share your experience with us, and I can’t thank you enough, and I can’t thank you enough for all you’re doing not only in your community but around the world with your website and your Instagram account because you’re you’re really trying to help people make this work.
I am I’m fantastically fascinated by this lectin free lifestyle and I enjoy the blogging good mm-hmm I mean. Were you a blogger before all this? No, no! It’s over. You said. Oh, my gosh there’s something to all this. What I got ta tell people I did and it just went okay, so you felt awful and we off-camera. Unlike your experience – and I know this was going on for 40 odd years. Yes, can you kind of walk back and give us a little scenario? What was happening? Yes, okay, so as a child growing up in Ohio, I had cornfields all around me and we had access to that for our meals and then as a family of eight.
On a meager income, we also had a lot of beans, non-pressure cooked beans with the corn and corn, bread. That was a main staple, so I did suffer from migraines as a child. I can remember being in bed for two to three days at a time with the migraine as a 10 or 11 year old and then came the chronic strep throat and sinus infections and ear infections. And of course the antibiotics were frequent as a child.
And then I and you had your tonsils out right yeah. So by the time I was 16 years old, I had such a chronic infection. The infection had went so far back in my throat, not only my tonsils, but a great deal of tissue removed behind my tonsils down into my throat as well. So that was at about the age of 16 and then the acne came afterwards mmm and I dealt with that until I was like done free now. Let me ask you: let me go back, what’s it like so you’re having migraines as a tenure, does anybody say? Oh, come on you’re a ten year old girl, whoa yeah boy, you’re, a drama queen.
What’s the you don’t have migraines, do people actually take you seriously or was that come on get out of bed? Let’s go, they did they took me seriously. They. I was actually told that the it is genetic that it was a genetic issue, my aunts and uncles, and my dad all had the headaches. So it was definitely a genetic issue, told ya, okay. Well, that’s good. At least somebody gave me a break okay, all right.
So then you so your tonsils are out, and you got lots of antibiotics with that and then the acne starts yes, and what what do people tell you about the acne? Oh, it was just hormonal or it’s the junk food that you were eating, but I didn’t eat a lot of junk food and but it was just something that I couldn’t find a solution to and they wanted to put you on a medication. Not at that point – and I was earlier and then I guess by my early 30s, I had come in contact with a tick.
I guess and I got Rocky Mountain spotted fever mm-hmm. It was devastating for me and I got fed more antibiotics and then along came the fibromyalgia. The migraines intensified a lot of face pain and ocular pain as well. It was very difficult to live in that state. It was probably one of the worst times of my life to live with the symptoms of the Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Oh, are you still in Ohio at this point or now we’re a military family.
My husband is a retired Marine, so the we lived in North Carolina, okay, where the presence of the Rocky Mountain spotted fever tic is large, there mm-hmm and so you’re getting lots of antibiotics for that, and are you actually working during all this? I was in school to be a dental assistant and I made it through the program dealing with the pain as well, and I ended up not doing anything with it, because I was just too sick and then from there.
I ended up with not too long after that the thyroid pain started, so I did feel this not in the tightness in my thyroid, and I just chose not to do anything about it. At that point, I just tried to ignore those. I really didn’t know what it was and did you, as you know, your doctor about all this or you’re. Just I’m not going to mention it. I got enough worries now I didn’t I didn’t mention it at all.
I just knew that it was a problem. It was a new issue and then by my late 30s, I had gotten the flu and was fed more antibiotics for the flu. Yes, yes, that works. Well, it destroyed me. This is when the mucus started. This is when it would became a real problem. For me, the mucus was the worst. I had severe post nasal drip when I slept it kept me awake. I was having to blow my nose frequently and I was clearing my throat and my chest when I consumed now that I know what it was lectins yeah.
So when I would consume my migraine, diet, the mucus would fill up in my lungs and I was having a hard time breathing and I was I was so sensitive to it all and it was um. It was very. It was not pleasant to be around me. Yeah we’re people telling you well, these are just allergies, a fever or it’s pollen things. Yes, you live in North Carolina, yes, yeah. I want to give you things for this. I had went to a pulmonologist, yes and they did testing, which I passed all of them.
They gave me uh no nasal spray and an inhaler that no one yeah okay, so the mucus formation stayed with me all the way from my late 30s. So when I went lectins free, it actually had gotten worse. But at that time, when mucus started, the doctor gave me prilosec, ah great razaw, purple pill, so we all know what that is. So by the time I had gotten the medication. The mucus problems had turned into really a severe burning and my sinuses.
So in my throat what had become raw – and my just – I never had a moment where my lungs felt clear, and so I did I was put on the prilosec and then by my early 40s. I had so much of the mucus formation that it was starting to affect my eustachian tube. So I was hearing my pulse and they call that pulsatile tinnitus, and that was just another issue, so they just kept compounding from there and then what happened or isn’t that enough.
Shortly after that, the pain in my throat had gotten so painful that I did go to the doctor. I’d never been to an endocrinologist before so I didn’t understand what was going on. They did a cat scan of my thyroid and told me I had Hashimoto’s. I had never heard of that before I didn’t understand what it was and that I was hypothyroid as well. I was given synthroid and which I ended up later, changing myself to armor.
I didn’t like the side effects of the sun, throwing and also at that visit with the endocrinologist. They discovered a nodule, and I didn’t know what that was either. It was in the right side of my thyroid. They kept a close eye on it and it grew at a fast rate by 2013, a head started, causing compression on my esophagus, and I was having a hard time breathing at night. Then what happened? I had a fire attack to me and partial partial.
I react to me and the Isthmus removed as well and then almost immediately the growth started in the left side. Aha, so I’m yet to do a follow-up since being lectin free to see how that knot was doing so I’ll. Let you know okay yeah, so I mean this is this: is you know you’re an unmitigated disaster, yes, and your your eating during all this time really hasn’t changed your eating? What you think is healthy, did anybody, or did you say gee? Could it be the food that I’m eating? No, nobody looked at food.
Nobody looked at me as a whole. No and then so. How did you find the plant paradox um? Actually, my husband had seen a commercial first and he’s very familiar with my illness. Isn’t he came home to show me the article and he couldn’t find it yeah, so he’s very disappointed that he couldn’t show me, but I found it the next day it was a banner across the YouTube. Ah, is this the food that is hurting you and then the smashed tomato that we’re all familiar with, and I played the article and played it again and played it again and ordered the book and it came to the house and I did not get off the Couch for two days, while I read that book nion and did light bulbs start going on, it went off when I knew it was the answer for me.
Yes, so alright, so you think you found the answer and you go. Oh my gosh. That’s that’s me in there there’s people just like me and did you go cold turkey, lectin, free or or what’d? You do. I went cold turkey and I did not have a problem with it at all. I came up with a plan. I knew that I had to open those pantry doors and I had three bags one for trash one for giveaway to my neighbor and if one for return it to the grocery store and see if I can get my money back – oh wow, okay, so that was My plan, it was a lot yeah.
It was a major part of my diet. That’s what I ate was grain and beans right, Ezekiel, bread, oh yeah, Zeki, Oh bread; yes, a shoe, cashew, nuts, yeah cashew cheese’s; yes, yes, zekiel, bread, it’s interesting people and I you know. I try to document this in all my books with research studies that have been done, but sprouted grains are actually higher in lectin content than unspread grains and one of the interesting things is plant doesn’t want its babies to be eaten, which seems obvious, but none of Us think about that and the newborn baby, the little sprouted grain is actually at its most vulnerable and so the plant.
Actually, the baby produces more lectins at that point. To dissuade the animal from eating, and actually just as inside alfalfa sprouts, are some of the most toxic foods that you can eat because of their incredibly high lectin content. So sorry about that yeah I was having it every day: yeah yeah with peanut butter. Oh yes, yeah, and this is all healthy, parvo healthy. Hopefully, for you and you’re going.
I am doing everything right and you know I am the most miserable human being. I know I was I just I got to the point by the time I was 47. I just didn’t want to be around anymore, just questioning why I wanted to be here so at that point about right before I found the plant paradox, I was 47 and I had visited many doctors. I was seeing a pulmonologist right, the orthopedic for the pain and my knee and my hips had gotten so bad yeah.
We didn’t talk about that. So now, you’ve got hip and knee plate pain, yes yeah. So I was dealing with that. I didn’t think I was too old yeah, I didn’t look it, but I know people saying oh well, you’re just getting old. Ah they did, but I didn’t want to accept it. I knew there was another option for me. So the Nick no knee pain, the Payne visiting the orthopedic, the pulmonologist still for the phlegm yeah, the endocrinologist again right before I went plant paradox and they did another endoscopy and that’s when they found a stomach, polyp yeah.
I have that one, a single stomach polyp. So that kind of scared me a little bit I’ve seen a Rheumatologist, so I got an official diagnosis of fibromyalgia and prescription for more medication. I think the gabapentin yeah yeah, I didn’t what the gabapentin do for you or it made me very dizzy and nauseous. I just wanted to lay around. I didn’t like that. I think I took that twice and I said this isn’t for me.
I have to find another option, so what okay, so you might cold turkey, and so what happened? What is what’s the first thing, you know great things, no more mucus. How fast did that happen immediately? Yeah, I’m extremely lectin sensitive. I can smell a white glass of wine and I have mucus formation neat. Yes, yes, I can detect when the restaurant is lying. To me immediately, I know that that’s not olive oil, the mucus formation happens and so right away, no mucus.
It didn’t have to blow my nose. I wasn’t going through a box of tissues a week. Wasn’t clearing my throat, which allowed my throat to heal so no mucus, wonderful, I could sleep at night. I wasn’t having post nasal drip within three days. Guess what no more headache amazing! So not just the headache when you deal with fibromyalgia headaches, it can be very ocular and the face pain that I was having so into my cheek bones and my sinuses.
All of that that I was dealing with within three days was gone now. This has got to be a placebo effect. You, you read a book that says everything’s going to be fine. If you stop eating these things and lo and behold, everything was fine, it was. It did exactly what you said. It was going to do so so and but you’ve obviously tested on that on yourself. So when a mischief food enters your mouth, maybe at a restaurant, for instance your you can, you know instantly instantly instantly, yes and so you’re, not you’re.
Sure you’re not crazy, know that you, this isn’t you’re making this up, I’m not crazy. I’ve even tested it and my husband will vouch to be in a restaurant and then call the waiter over and say I need to know if this is not olive oil. Yes, it’s olive oil ma’am, it is all of us. I need you to check on the bottle and he comes back and he says no, it does say it’s a blend to blend of olive oil and canola oil.
My body detects that it’s it’s great, I’m glad. I have this built-in system now you’re. Yes, now I’m glad it’s it’s very beneficial. I think everybody should eat those lectin free lifestyle. Well, I think that’s a really that’s a really good point and maybe a little stop for a second and talk about that. A couple years ago and the plant paradox came out, I was lecturing at Harvard actually nerve health and brain health, and one of a distinguished professor said well you’re, saying that everybody should you know he looked in free, and I said yes, that’s correct.
He said well, what’s what’s wrong, with the advice that everything should be in moderation and isn’t that a better argument – and I said well, I have nothing wrong with that. If you want moderate arthritis, moderate heart disease, moderate dementia, great – and I said – but do you really want? You know moderate arthritis and heart disease, of course not now and I think what’s what’s really interesting you’re.
Obviously, what I described is a canary yes and the canary in the coal mine. Yes, and you know, bless you for being a canary. My Canaries have taught me most everything I know about all this. Yes, so you guys react to these things lectins instantaneously, so you feel the things that I and now others have suggested are going on in all of us, but we just unfortunately, don’t feel them the way you do and we can use the word clairvoyant.
I don’t think that’s right, but you you, you feel these things. I call it hypersensitive yeah yeah yeah. I think that’s a that’s a great way yeah and I think what what you guys have taught me is particularly now with really modern blood tests. Looking at leaky gut looking at inflammation looking at what’s happening in the brain on arteries, we can see that when we take lectins away from people that we can, even if they don’t feel the difference, most people do, but even if they don’t feel it, we can See it on a blood test I’ll, give you a quick example.
Yesterday we I saw a woman actually enter in her late 60s, who have had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. She doesn’t anymore and we do this test called a pulse test and I have no relationship with them. Pu LS that really looks at markers for your chance of a heart attack in the next five years, and one of the markers I’ve written about is called il 16 and I all 16 is an autoimmune attack on the inside of our blood vessels and I’ve.
Given two papers that I suggest that it’s lectins that caused this and when lectins are taken out of the diet, we see il 16 drop dramatically, and so this woman were looking at her pulse test and her score for having a heart attack. The next five years drops in half and we compare her first one with this one in her il 16 drop dramatically, and I said, look at that you’re, you know your risk of having a heart attack went from remarkably high six months later.
You now have minimal risk of a heart attack. Did you you know, and you didn’t feel the fact that your risk for a heart attack went down that wasn’t evident, but we can see it on a blood test. So bless you, for you, know, teaching all of us number one, but you’re, not crazy, and that you’re just you know, you’re, really good you’re a Geiger counter. Okay! So that’s so so you okay! So now all of a sudden, so your acne clears yes.
So after three days the headache cleared and then a week that gave my throat enough time to heal, I didn’t have the raw throat anymore, so that was a bonus for me to not have to deal with that soreness and gosh. I remember the day. Three months later, this is so exciting I’ll, never forget this day I went to clipped my nails and I had a wonderful, beautiful line of demarcation across my fingernails, and I got to looking what would kind of confuse me at first.
I had never seen anything like this before I could see the dead tissue up front and the new healthy, shiny tissue in the back, and so they looked down to look at my toes, and I saw the same thing on my toes. That’s when I knew my gut was healing and my microbiome was thriving, so I ran downstairs to tell my husband look, look, look. This is barking. I’r do I going to do this. There rest of my life – and I was so excited to see that that was healing.
That was proof for me. It was he excited about. He is so excited. Yes, he’s been very supportive of me always especially with the plant paradox. I couldn’t have done this without him. Actually, he sees the difference, especially when, at the point of being lectin free after the thyroid supplementation, I think I added about six months and to being lectin free. I could just still feel that pain in my throat and I knew I needed some thyroid supplementation, so I had implemented some supplements and then after I did that really the depression lifted to have the the support that I needed for thyroid and he was excited to See that change in me the depression, a little more friendlier and just all around a better person to be around, so it really affects you when you’re sick, it’s hard.
What you can put people through well and pain is one of the most depressing things. There is particularly if you don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel, all right, so you you see the difference we talked before off-camera. You know. One of my favorite teachings from Hippocrates was was about this green life force energy, yes, and you obviously as hokey as it sounds, have experienced this green life force energy, yes, so fascinating.
To feel how your body can feel when you remove the external forces that are causing the damage to your body, to have that energy to feel so powerful and I felt powerful and I blogged about my power and I’ll. Never forget the day that I wanted. A bicycle: now I have energy. Let’s go do this, so we got a bicycle and I posted about that too. So yeah because you didn’t want to get on a bicycle because you didn’t have any energy get up and go yeah yeah, so yeah the green, my force, energy was with me and I loved it yeah.
You know it sounds hokey and I you know, even as I was writing about it in the plant paradox. I said boy. This is really hokey, it’s so touchy-feely California, but you know Hippocrates. Actually, who was the father of Medicine, and he I learned from him that all disease begins in the gut and all disease ends in the gut. But again I think it’s worth mentioning for people who haven’t heard this or having read the book.
Hippocrates said that all creatures have this intrinsic desire ability for perfect health, that’s part of our nature and he called it. The green lifeforce energy, that’s the translation from Greek, and he felt that there were external forces that were preventing this expression of green lifeforce energy and that a physician was supposed to find what those external forces were and remove them. And once those forces were removed that the body, the green lifeforce energy would heal, you know the body itself, and so a physician was just supposed to be a detective, and I think if there’s one thing that I’ve taken heart thanks to people like you is I’m Just a detective and you and everybody who’s listening to us – has the power to heal themselves.
Once we get these little mischief makers away from yes, those invaders all right, so you start a blog to tell everybody hey guys. You know this actually works. I was just posting some food and before I knew it, I was an inspiration to others and they were telling me you know you make this so much easier, you’re so inspiring. Now I do I work at the natural marketplace in Warrington Virginia, it’s a wonderful magical, store, owned and operated by Shelley Ross for the last thirty years. Yes, we’re a wonderful, organic health, food store with clean supplements and then organic deli, upstairs on a wonderful staff and you actually have a lectin free area. That’s correct, Shelley is amazing and was very open and receptive to my idea.
When I came to her, she was already familiar with dr. Gundry and the plant paradox. I think she was using your products. Oh yes, so I told her my idea what I wanted to do and of course she gave me a thumbs up. Let’s do it right away and I had to move some things around, make room for the lectin free groceries and I worked with our administrative staff. She did a wonderful job at creating lectin free stickers to put on the shelf tags and ordered the books was able to keep them in the store and work with the customers when they came in.
I worked personally with individuals. We have a lot of sick people. More to Warrenton, with all of the same issues that I have so I’m very, very familiar with them all. So, of course, anybody with those issues – and there was a lot of them – I was able to direct them towards the plant. Paradox show them the groceries and so good somebody who’s, not Warrenton Virginia, who had wants to get some lectin free products into their health.
Food store, or even their grocery store, how? How would they go about it? How did you do this? Oh definitely. Every store has a grocery buyer. I would contact that grocery buyer directly and take your yes list with you. Maybe even take the plant paradox book with you and tell them that this is just. This is a worldwide movement. It’s not just for me personally. There are millions of people with success.
Stories live in the plant, paradox lifestyle and I just request them and they they’re willing to work with you to bring in the compliant groceries, and I would also I’ve already done this. Why and then, once you have your, why it’s easier to stay with program and then also to really it helps to blog about it to journal about it, so get your journal and take photographs so take photographs of the things that you’re hoping that’ll change. I wish I had done that, for instance, my eyebrows, I people with Hashimoto’s I’m going to seeing the third outer part of their eyebrow, and I have that it came back.
So I had a lot of thinness in my scalp and that is starting to grow back as well. Now, at my ferritin level is at a normal range, I would have taken better photographs of my skin the before a before and after so and yeah. You have gorgeous skin and you’re, trying to tell me that this was not you of a few years ago. No, absolutely not. I had deep creases on both sides of my cheeks really that ran several inches and the the age spots.
A lot of the age spots are gone now. Age spots go away, yeah, you’re, actually, D, aging, that’s right! Yes, come on. I have been told yes, and I mean you literally had cystic acne. Yes, so I’m dealing with the scarring I’m using a derma roller right now and some vitamin C repair serum. I mainly had it in my chin area. It didn’t affect me in my cheeks, but I’m dealing with some scarring. Yes, mm-hmm great, I mean you’re, like you know, like dr.
Kerry walls who was basically was in a wheelchair, as a physician, doing all the right things and on multiple medications for MS and told well, you know you have progressive. Ms, and you know this. Is your life and now, of course she can ride a bicycle and it’s by eating. You know nine cups of vegetables a day and I’ve convinced her that those vegetables shouldn’t have lectins and them, and I think she – and I agree about that but yeah.
This is your living example that there are foods that are killing you, or at least making your life miserable and removing those foods gives you a whole new life. Yes, yes, you follow whether lectin Free People for inspiration. I do I love them. You want to mention. Yes, first, everybody is wonderful, they all have wonderful recipes. I think the the some of my favorites our course are known as Stewart plant.
Paradox farmer, no, no yeah! Yes, wonderful! I can’t wait until she decides to make a farmhouse cookbook. I love her recipe she’s. I used to inspire her in the beginning. Now she inspires me. That’s great yeah we’ve become pretty good friends, Instagram friends and made a couple phone calls from Canada to Canada and then of course, Ralph and Steve. I followed her from the beginning. I enjoy making many of her meals and then, of course, I’m locked in free gourmet, Christine look what she’s done with all of that sourdough bread that she’s got going on over there. No, I can’t wait to get into that. When I get back home right, yeah yeah, you know the community obviously keeps growing and growing yes, and you know this is this: is a movement and it it’s real and the wonderful thing you know if I, if I look back it’s like all of you guys Who have embraced this? I give you guys so much credit for okay, I’m I’m not going to keep this for myself Island, I’m going to you know, help others and obviously that’s why I changed my career to do this cuz.
You know think about all these sites. Now that all the people you’re helping and that this is something that people can do and yeah take some work. But then I tell people if you’re going to hate me for two weeks and then you’re going to probably start liking me, but it does take some work and it takes for you. It was a leap of faith. Oh it’s like okay. You know everything’s out, I’m going to do this, but the neat thing, particularly for you, you know three days, your mucus is gone.
Yes, what’s with that? Yes, I wrote about a guy who helped his wife, it’s actually in the plant paradox. She had rheumatoid arthritis and, after her first pregnancy and he’s put on these drugs right, and she wanted to have another baby and knew there’s no way she was going to bring a baby into this world. While on these immunosuppressive medications, we work with her. Her husband was credibly supported and a very vigorous Bureau guy and he says: okay, I’m all-in we’re going to we’re going to eat the exact same way saw them after six months and she you know I’ve written about her.
She just had another beautiful baby and it was never flared, but he comes in after with the first visit and he says: hey Doc, you know, you know, I’m I’ve lost 15 pounds I didn’t need to, but you know I’m so buff now, but I got ta. Tell you: I’ve had chronic sinus congestion, all my life and my sinuses ablated and in taken antibiotics, and that was just me. He says I got ta tell you, you know you should tell people your sinuses will clear up nice and he said no.
No, no. You should really tell them the sinuses clear up. I said yes, you’re you’re right yeah, you know that’s your sinuses will clear up. Yes, yes, I do, however, think that I’m one of those, your Canaries, that shouldn’t have sheep or goat cheese as well. I’r glad you brought that up now there are. We now have these really cool testing for dairy sensitivity, among other things, and there are a subset of my patients who react to casein a1.
They react, casing a2 and they react away and just throw it out. You’re, probably one of the reactors and don’t there’s no human need for cheese. As you know, there’s there was an interesting book years ago. Women there’s these really cool opioid, like compounds in cheese that go right, particularly to women’s brains and go happy-happy happy-happy, and so there is an addictive quality to cheese. Just like there is an addictive quality to her head because of the same.
It’s called morphine’s, kco morphine’s, but yeah. So just give cheese. The booth, it’s okay, it’s okay! Yes, okay! We have got to wrap it up, but in the meantime you have some questions. For me, I do all right, let’s hear it all right, so it turns out that I’m homozygous for the MTHFR gene mutation or variation, the mother-effer gene. Yes, it is. Does that mean that I am or can be more liked insensitive than somebody that’s heterozygous or non carrier? You know I a lot of people particularly who write in this area want to kind of blame everything.
That’s ever happened to them, whether it’s depression, anxiety, addiction on the fact that they’re, either homozygous or even heterozygous for the MTHFR mutation. There is some interesting evidence that if you look at family histories of these mutations, particularly for the double mutations that there is an increased anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar schizophrenia and drug abuse and alcohol – what’s cool about this – is you can fix this with methyl b12 methylcobalamin and Methylfolate and one of the things I keep telling people you got to get the sublingual form of methyl cobalamin methyl b12 okay, so many people with this mutation also lack, what’s called intrinsic factor e.
That allows you to absorb b12 from your intestines. If you put it some way, well, it’ll bypass it and I measure b12 levels and every human being every three to six months, and I know exactly who are the ones who are putting it under the tongue. I know exactly who are chewing it or sucking on it. I know exactly who’s swallowing it and when we actually make them put it under their tongue and their levels come on.
Thank you for telling me that, because I chew on it, don’t you wonder: you’re, okay it’ll actually make a difference. Okay, yeah! We can see it it’s fascinating, so my dad died at 49 of heart disease. So once I carry both genes, the MTHFR, I imagined he had the one that leaves you susceptible to heart: disease, yeah. But again it’s fixable good news yeah. This is fixable problem, yes, okay. My next question is when how have a living a lectin free lifestyle affect the stomach polyp, so we’ve had actually a number of people with not only stomach Pollock’s but gallbladder polyps and they knock on wood, have resolved with going left and free.
Don’t have a time period for it. We see most people with polyps totally different subject, have very high insulin levels and you may have never had your fasting insulin level measured, but insulin is one of the biggest drivers to polyp formation, particularly in the colon or in the stomach. So, let’s see what happens you? Don’t you don’t have to go? Have your stomach, the polyp removed? You should because of the potential for a polyp to have precancerous changes.
You should at least reading this and maybe even have a biopsy of it, but we’re not dispensing medical advice on this program right. Okay, all right! What supplements would you recommend to help me with the only issue I still have left, so I have a little bit of muscle, cramping and my calves and my laugh feet. Mm-Hmm and muscle recovery issues and I’ve tried doing the magnesium and potassium the branched-chain amino acids.
Mm-Hmm and have you even use the magnesium oil spray? Yes, okay, and that doesn’t help you yeah most people who are getting muscle cramps who go on our program are doing it because they’re, eliminating simple sugars and one of the interesting things is. We store sugar in our muscles in the form of glycogen and when we eliminate sugars from our diet, which the plain paradox does we use up all the glycogen and our muscles and the glycogen is stored with a water molecule and it’s stored with magnesium and with Potassium and so those actually leave with the glycogen, and so when somebody calls me or one of my patients says.
Oh my gosh, I got the worst cramps in my legs, you know at night and it’s waking me up and I’ll go. This is great news. You are following the program and they look at me like what do you mean? You know I’m having cramps, I said yeah. They were actually eliminating sugar from your diet. One thing I think about is you can? Actually you don’t have a weight problem? You can actually add more resistance.
Starches have some more millet, has some more sorghum and see. If that helps you, and even particularly into your evening meal yeah see what happens. You know all right. Let me know. You know it has to come from the ground level the government’s not going to help us the insurance company’s not going to help us medical schools, we’re not going to help us, and certainly the drug companies are not going to help us so yeah good. You guys are going to get a behind-the-scenes in-depth look into what it takes to build a social media, marketing agency and scale it past that six figure mark, and I feel, like a lot of you – are going to be pleasantly surprised because, as you’ll see in just A bit my setup is pretty minimalist when building my setup, I wanted two things number one stuff that could get the job done very well and number two not having much stuff.
So that’s really the two principles that I followed and i’m not only going to be giving you guys a look into what I use but telling you why I use it. What I use it for as well as giving you various options for yourself that you don’t just take the entertainment value away from this article, but you can actually take practical recommendations from this article and apply it for your agency. So i’m super excited for this article and without further ado.
Let’s get right into it, so i’m going to start off with, what’s, in my opinion, the most important piece of equipment for any online entrepreneur for any digital marketer, which is your main tool, which is your laptop right here. I’ve got this 16 inch, 2020 macbook pro fully specced out now. Obviously I know that this is not a cheap macbook and when I started my agency, I really remember that I worked on a macbook pro a 13 inch.
I believe a 2015 model which was very very wrecked, and I managed to score my agency to six figures with that and pass the six figure mark. So it’s definitely not an excuse to not have a good laptop. But what I will say is that, as soon as you make some money with your agency definitely invest into a quality laptop honestly, it’s going to save you so much freaking headaches, because, honestly, if I add up all the wasted time with my old laptop all the Lagging and all the time that I had to wait for applications to load and sometimes it crashed and all you know it’s just so much wasted time and not only that.
It really angered me, and so it really took away some pleasure from the actual work in, and so that is why, when I started making money with my agency, I definitely just upgraded all the pieces of equipment that, in my opinion, were just not up to date And that I could improve, and so my recommendation to you guys is that as soon as you start, making some money with your online business with your agency go ahead and upgrade your laptop is such a great investment in my opinion – and it is the one thing That we use every single day right.
Our whole job revolves around this machine, and so it really pays a lot of dividends to have the best machine. It is one of those things that can give you an edge, so that is that 4d laptop and now on to the second tool. Now. The next thing is the youtube algorithm and you might be asking: how does the youtube algorithm help? You run your agency and grow your agency, and the answer is not what you might expect now, every time you like a article every time you comment on a article.
It basically tells a youtube algorithm that this article is pretty decent, and so it pushes out to a lot more people and it makes my team and myself feel appreciated and that have a wider impact. So if you haven’t gone ahead and smashed the like button, go ahead and do that right now and with that being said, let’s get right into the actual second tool, the second tool. Sorry, the second tool is a pair of noise canceling headphones.
I personally use beats to be honest: i’m aware that bose is probably a better brand, a better pair of headphones. I’r completely aware of that. Personally, i, like the aesthetics, and that, for me, is quite an important part of the equipment. My tools and for the whole thing to be in unison and to look aesthetic, and so that, for me, is pretty important, and so every time I wear these headphones, someone just manages to tell me hey.
You should probably grab a pair of both headphones, but personally I quite like these and brandon aside. I personally think that a pair of noise, canceling, headphones or earphones is quite a good investment simply because it allows you to get in the flow and into your state. Much quicker and allows you to block out noises, and this is particularly important. If you don’t have an office, that’s quiet.
I have the privilege to have an office, that’s very, very quiet, and so I probably wouldn’t even need this, but it really helps me get into the flow and anything that helps me be more productive and get more stuff done, and so this is the second tool That I use for my agency, the third tool, is a microphone, and this is the one that I personally use. This was actually a present from a friend and it’s called the blue snowball.
I believe I would have gotten the blue yeti, which is the common design that you may be used to from this brand um, but obviously it was a present and I actually really like this shape and aesthetically. I think it looks much better than the yeti. That’s personally me – and I actually just put it up there on my bookshelf right there and it looks sick with my books. So and so, as I told you guys for me, aesthetic is part of it um, but I definitely think that a microphone is a must-have and I use this microphone for team calls for sales calls for um the live interviews that i’m hosting on my free private Mentor community on facebook, by the way, if you guys have enjoyed that go ahead and check out the link in bio, but for any of those interviews for recording, looms uh for my team for my clients as well kind of communication for recording my screen.
Recording youtube articles sometimes and a bunch of other users, so anytime, I have any call or i’m recording something on my laptop, i’m always going to have this plugged in, and I personally think that having a crisp audio good lighting and a good background gives you a Massive edge on a sales goal: why? Because you come off as much more professional, and so the prospect takes you more seriously, which in turn makes you more likely to close the client, so definitely call one of these microphones.
I think it’s like 50 bucks so really inexpensive but check it out, and if you can’t afford this one, then i’m sure there are much cheaper options out there so uh. That is that for the microphone. That is that for the third tool now onto the fourth one, the next tool is my standup desk. Hopefully you guys are not seeing too many wires down below and this one actually fell off, stand-up desk. I use it almost every single day, especially after lunch, where my energy levels are not as high, so it helps me get my blood flowing and will often have most of my calls, especially in the afternoon, which is usually when I have my sales goals and my Team calls and my student calls as well, and I will have all of those standing up and it really helps me gain more energy and anything that I can buy.
That will give me back more energy, i’m definitely going to cop. So if you guys can get yourself a stand-up desk, I highly highly recommend it, because sometimes you just got to stand up, get your legs moving and get back to work. So that is that for the fourth two now onto the fifth boom, the fifth tool is my notebook, my personal notebook, and obviously i’m not going to show you guys too much of what’s in here, because it’s top secret.
But I do not know what I would do without a notebook, and I always have this laying on my table right from my computer, and I truly believe this is massive and i’ll talk about this in just a second, but having a place where you can knock Down ideas, where you can put your thoughts into paper as well as write down quick notes and to do’s from calls that you’re having is incredibly vital and on this notebook i’ll structure, a youtube content ideas, for example.
I will also, for example, prep for sales schools on this notebook prep for interviews on this notebook. For example, i’ll give you guys a little peek inside my preparation for my last interview on my community. So that’s this and that okay and then all the questions that I wrote for that. But having a notebook where you can prepare for calls where you cannote down ideas where you can actually diagnose a client.
For example, when I hop on a sales school with a client, i’m actually writing stuff down and i’m diagnosing their current situation, okay, which is very important because then, when I pitch my service, it might be different and it’s going to be personalized to what they actually Need um and a bunch of other cool stuff, so long story short, definitely get yourself a notebook and definitely always have your notebook with you on your table.
Note down ideas that you get no down relevant points that you get from sales goals and definitely prepare for your sales goals on paper. I actually helps you a ton more i’ve found, so that is that for the fifth tool and now on to the sixth tool, the sixth tool is this box light right here and normally this box light, but right behind it, there’s a ring light and I use The box light for recording articles just like this.
I use the ring light typically for my tic toc articles um, but the point here is lighting makes a difference, as you can obviously see with this clip right, the lighting is not as great and so obviously the quality of the clip is not as great and I’r not saying you should have a ring light or a box light if you’re not creating content. If you do, then absolutely yes right, but even if you hop on a sales call having good lighting is vital and if you’re not next to a window like.
I am where I get a lot of natural light. Then either move your desk close to that also make sure that you have artificial light sources that actually give you good lighting, because otherwise the quality of the coal is not going to be as great and you’re. Not going to look as professional and that my friends makes a difference, so that is the sixth tool now onto the seventh tool. Now the seventh tool is a whiteboard.
Now let me explain what I use my whiteboard for and why I think it’s actually vital and, as I told you guys with my notebook, it’s pretty much the same use right, except that a whiteboard have much more space and it actually helps me structure. My ideas much better because i’ve got more space and I can draw little diagrams. I can draw different structures and it helps me visualize my ideas so much better.
So if you guys have the space for it, I definitely recommend getting a whiteboard and some pens. Obviously I use it also for content. You guys might have readed some of those articles on my blog um, but a whiteboard is vital, in my opinion, for any online entrepreneur for any person who’s working at home just to have that real estate uh, where you can actually draw and actually put your ideas Onto a surface and every time I do this, I get so many more breakthroughs than if I just kept them in my head.
So that is the seventh tool and uh now onto the final tool and the eighth tool is the aura ring you guys might have already heard about this ring uh, because I think it’s a it’s very common in a lot of entrepreneurs and in the online space. But the reason why it’s not the o-ring that I quite like I mean. Obviously I like the design, I like the the piece of tech, and I think it’s very accurate. I think it’s a great piece of tech, but before this actually had the with its aura, it’s quite a bit more expensive than the o-ring, and the only reason why I switched to the ore ring.
I was simply because that gave me some bluetooth issues and I could not repair it in the end, which was a bit tragic uh, but I had to cop my o-ring and now the reason why I think an o-ring is important. It’s not vital, but it’s important is because it makes the unconscious conscious and that’s one of the things that i’m always looking to do with my business and my life right. I want to make all those things that are unconscious, conscious right and bring them to my awareness, for example, how I sleep how I eat right.
Maybe it could be what my team members feel and and think of the culture right. If you don’t ask them, then they’re never going to tell you. It could be, for example, the satisfaction of my students. Obviously they rave about it during the course, but at the end of the program I always have them. I fill out a survey, the same thing with my clients at the end of our partnership. I always have them fill out a survey because i’m trying to make the unconscious conscious and so that’s what the ring does, and it does that for an area of your life, which is pretty important, which is sleep now.
I will put my hands up and say that i’m not the best sleeper and the reason why that is because, as of now, I haven’t placed as much importance on that, as I probably should, and instead of making my time in better priority, which should be around Eight hours um i’ve made my sleep efficiency a priority, and so what i’m trying to do is i’m trying to make these six and a half or seven hours that i’m in bed uh as quality as possible and that’s what i’m currently focused on, but i’m slowly Shifting and i’m being a bit more strict with my sleep schedule, so that is the oil ring, and that is that, for my eight tools, final thing that I will say is this article could have been a bit underwhelming for a lot of you, and maybe you Thought I had this incredible setup and i’m not going to lie.
Probably three months ago I had a better setup with a monitor and all that stuff, but basically one of the things that i’m doing right now is i’m trying to be as minimalist as possible. Number one because I don’t like clutter and number two is is simply because I think minimalism is great for focus, and so I used to have my monitor and I used to have my laptop and yes, you think you’re getting a lot of stuff done, because you Can move things around much quicker, but it also distracts quite a lot because you’re always multitasking and that’s what I found myself doing and that’s what i’m transitioning to a much more minimalist ass setup.
Yes, I might get a monitor, but if I do then I have my laptop just sit idle connected to the monitor and right now I really like my macbook pro to do that. So the final thing that I will say is just make sure you buy things that are high quality and of high purpose. Don’t just buy things that are okay, like, for example, I had this thing, which I barely ever use, which is a kind of like a notepad um.
Sometimes I use it for you know explaining things to my students, sometimes i’ll pull this up with a pen that I have right there and i’ll basically write on it when i’m giving an explanation, but I can do this with my mouse and it’s not vital right. Yes, you get more quality with this, but it’s not 100x in comparison to the mouse. This is a good example of not a vital purchase uh. So that is the final thing that I will say on the tools and the equipment side of things.

It’s like a month of isolation to come up with something and still just know, yeah pretty much, but no I mean no news is good news right, that’s what they say at least so, keep on truckin there. You go well awesome. Well, today, we’re we’re joined by the lonely, Viking Shane here to talk with us today. All three of us are graphic designers turned web designers and we thought it would make a good conversation talking about kind of the pros and cons of each field and how he’s kind of integrated, both of them together in the services we provide so good morning, Shane.
How are you doing today doing very well? Thank you. It’s it’s not the morning for me so good afternoon, good evening and good night in the words of The Truman, Show yeah, I’m good. Thank you. It’s great to be with you guys. Well, we’re happy to have have you on here your your a stapl and all of our regular Facebook groups, so we’ve been interacting at a time, but we hadn’t jumped on a call together.
So I’m excited to do that for anybody who hasn’t been introduced to you. Yet why don’t you give us a little bit of background about? You know yourself what your business does, where people can find you all those cool things cool. So, as you said, my name is Shane Shane Riley. If you see my cinnamon, you don’t know how to pronounce it, and I my business is called lonely Viking and we basically do what everybody else.
Does that’s the real there’s your elevator pitch. We just do what everybody else does. Yeah I mean we’ve got like a we’ve, got a little elevator pitch thing. I guess: how does it go? I try to remember it. It’s a we help overworked business owners grow their business and get their laugh they’re nice. So we don’t have like an industry niche, but we try to like make this niche, that’s like where we try to help business owners to automate and to get better conversions on their sites and that’s how we push that.
So that’s what I do I live in in South Africa. I live in in Johannesburg and yeah. We you can catch me on YouTube. I have a little blog, where I do mostly kind of elemental tutorials and I’m starting to do a few other things there and I’m all over Facebook, like you said yes, you’re you’re good, follow so definitely go check out the YouTube blog, we’ll leave a will, leave A link to all that in the article description here, so so, let’s get into this, I think all three of us came to website design via graphic design, so I’ve told people before, but I worked in the print industry for many many years before I started doing This and kind of found this is a way that I could actually run my own business in the print industry is pretty expensive to do that, and the web industry is basically free to do that.
So I kind of made my way and tried to translate those things I learned in graphic design to web design and Matt. Your story is fairly similar right, yeah started, started with print design and and branding for years, and then probably about five years ago, started to dip my toes into web development and found that it’s a lot more forgiving in a lot of ways. Sure it boxes you in and others, but like overall.
As far as the business goes, it made a lot more sense to to really dive in a head. First in that direction, yeah I found the same thing but Shane. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about how you got started and and how your path has been? Oh, so I’ll try to keep the story short because I’m prone to going on very long, but basically, when I left school I am. I started my own business I wanted to. I wanted to start a surf clothing label, and so I worked for a year as a in a property valuation firm, and that was the worst most boring thing.
I’ve ever done, but I said I saved up my salary. I was living at home and then I started this clothing company and then I kind of needed to learn how to design like stuff for the black prints for the t-shirts and all that kind of stuff. So I did a whole bunch of stuff. I learned screen printing, I bought sewing machines and we had a little manufacturing thing going, but I kind of was self-taught graphic design like that, just kind of by necessity.
I had to design like the posters for our marketing and, and so I kind of got into graphic design and branding and stuff like that. I’ve never really been in the print industry. Like you guys, although you, you can’t do graphic design without experiencing the print industry. In some way shape or form, you know I did a lot of design for screen printing and then, when I ran that business for quite some time and then winner, when I was getting married, that business didn’t earn enough money to support being married, and so so I just I decided to sort of pivot and I started doing graphic design for clients, and so that’s when I started doing logos and print design for them that kind of thing and that sort of morphed into web, when one of the clients had done a logo For said, hey, can you build a website for me and I was like yeah sure, even though I had no idea how to build a website and then our promptly jumped on Amazon, bots, HTML, CSS and PHP books and then got studying, and I put the sky’ Website and that’s how I got into web at least you jumped into code, I just jumped onto Wix and was like yeah I’ll fix you a web site yeah.
So yes, so what’s a let’s talk a little bit about the pros and cons of graphic design versus web stuff, so I think there’s definitely some things that I’ve brought from my graphic design life into web that have made that transition a whole lot easier and I Think there’s some other things that that have always kind of bothered me about print design or have really started to bother me about like graphic design stuff.
Now that I can do web. So when we first start by by some of the things from both of you, I guess that that you think are really useful in web design coming from the background of a of a graphic designer. So what would you say to that Shane? I would say the very first thing is that changes are easily made right so like it. I remember once doing am designing business cards for a client and then having a couple of thousand of them printed, and then they had a mistake on them and I had to eat the cost of getting them reprinted.
That was like, if you make a sense at our branch yeah so like on a website. You make a mistake and then you know you get if you’re lucky you’ve got something like project huddle or WP feedback, and you get a little comment and you make a change if you’re not so lucky you get a word document. Those changes are easily made. I think for me, that’s probably like the first thing that comes to mind. How about you met yeah.
I’r definitely going to mirror that for sure, for example, Kyle and I actually worked on a project together and when I sent it to the the printers. Neither of us realized that the the file itself was RGB instead of CMYK, so we got like thousands of these rot cards sent to the client and all the colors were just completely wrong. Like the blacks were Gray’s, the greens were yellow it was. It was real.
Bad so, like you know, that’s definitely a downside to print or once you send that file off. It’s done it’s in concrete yeah, but at the same time you know I really do like like Kyle said earlier. I still do a lot of like print work and design work and anytime. Like an illustration or something like that comes in you know, it’s it’s one of those things that I love drawing. I love illustration, but I don’t really have the time what with managing clients and the business and all that stuff to do any of that on my own.
So you know I don’t take it on very often, but it’s a nice change of pace. So I think, like just the freedom, the graphic design gives you over Web Design, mostly I’m like the project types. You know there’s illustration: there’s package design, there’s branding, there’s there’s a whole bunch of stuff that you can do or is Web Design. It’s a little bit more niche-y and I think you know when I look at this, I think about just from my own journey and my own perspective.
What’s really helped me in coming from a graphic design background is you you have to spend a lot of time? Learning about things like negative space and typography and and all these kinds of things that just go into any kind of design principles yeah. So by the time I actually found website design a lot of those things were just in my nature. To do that. I think a lot of people just starting out first, the first thing they ever design is a website.
You know those principles aren’t already ingrained, so I think there’s a lot of translation. You know if you’re somebody that’s looking at website design as a possibility. You’re, a graphic designer and you’re looking at web being a possible move for you, I think there’s a lot of things that translate across from from graphic design to web design, and you don’t find anything else, besides kind of those those few that I mentioned, that makes Me think of like the opposite problem, where, like you come to web design and everything’s kind of like grid based and positioning, is relative for the most part, unless you want to run into other problems and use absolute positioning all right, but so like.
I guess I’m not answering your question, but I’m moving to another point, but you can come from that background and have that knowledge. And then you want to just have the freedom of like placing something wherever you want it, and then you find out that well in web design. Although, if you, if you know what you’re doing you can get get around that, but for the most part, when you starting out you’re like this thing’s got ta go in a grid.
That luck has to be in this certain position, but it doesn’t look right compositionally. I want to move it and I can’t do that and so the learning curve from that point of view becomes kind of steep and you can’t just take your your print knowledge and just slap it into where. But I think what you were saying: it’s a huge help to understand, composition and typography, and space like I find my business partner is a developer and he often helps out on like the design side or actually building the the websites, and I’ve always got to tell Him like add more space more space like pattern just want to fit everything in yeah and then he so now he says to me: well, I’m now I add the space, I think should be there and then I add 50 % more so that you weren’t telling Me to add more space, a lot of that stuff translate yeah exactly so.
A lot of that stuff is great, like you learn all of that those design principles and bring them over and that’s great, but there’s also the converse where there’s some constraints on web design. That hold you back a little if you’ve got that background, so learning, let’s merge those two things is important and when I worked in in the print industry, it was mainly in sign shops. So when we were dealing with we’re dealing with really large format, stuff right, so big billboards and big building signs and stuff, so when I would have to size something in Illustrator, it would be by inches or by feet right.
So that was always the system. I was using to measure everything was inches or feet so when you get to web and it’s a completely different way of looking at it. So still when we’re talking about like relative sizes and stuff, it’s still hard for my brain to like comprehend. All that, because I’m used to things being there, either six inch tall letters or they’re, not six inch tall letters. You know it doesn’t depend on big.
You know the surface area is right, so that that’s been a really challenging thing to kind of just take over that habit. I think and kind of jumping back to an earlier comment. The whole, like you, know, building as a designer you see like the absolutely gorgeous websites, or at least the website mock-ups on dribble and places like that, where they’re they’re, gorgeous and they’re, clearly a graphic designer that’s putting them together, because once you start like really looking At it, it would be such a nightmare to actually build.
I think that, like kind of illustrates that fact over again yeah – and you know when I when I first started doing this – I I didn’t have the I guess, just the the tools in place and I didn’t know my tools well enough to just jump into a Tool like Elementor and start designing right away, so the first websites I did. I designed them all in Adobe, Illustrator. First, because that’s the program. I know, like the back of my hand like if, if you can do it in Adobe Illustrator, I can make it happen.
You know so I started designing all everything there then having to recreate it in in web and kind of use that as a transition to like move from this is where I’m comfortable to now in web. Like now, it’s very rare, I hope, an illustrator to mock up a website or something, but have you all done some of those kinds of things? Have you seen yourself doing that I do a lot of pen and paper sketches before going, but rarely I’ll build something in in Photoshop or illustrator.
First, I’m kind of like for lack of a better word, I’m kind of lazy. So I don’t like to do things to us, so our generally just dive in and just start building. If it’s just me working on a project, I would just dive in and just start building changing CSS. Now it’s elemental, it’s easy, like oh people build or whatever you just. I just build straight in there, but even before, when I was doing WordPress sites with CSS and HTML, I would just jump in and then change the code and refresh the page, and just do it like that.
I was never keen to do stuff twice. Obviously, if I’m working with someone else and I had to supply them a design or whatever, then I would do it in Photoshop generally, not illustrator, so much but yeah sure yeah, I don’t think illustrator is the preferred choice. It’s just what I spent all my time in, but I will say like one of the biggest things I’ve seen and it’s something that I didn’t realize was a problem for people until we were in these communities – and I see other people struggling with it.
It’s something that I never think about. You think about things like when your customers send you a logo and it’s you know a bad size or it’s pixelated or you need a white version of it or this or that you know. I don’t even think anything about opening up the logo in Illustrator most time you can recreate it pretty quickly and then make whatever kind of file type you need yeah. I need to do photo shopping two things.
That’s not a big deal. I can just jump in and do those things so some of those tools you have in the graphic design world just make life so much easier in web design, because I think a lot of people are subbing that kind of work out or using crappy files that They probably shouldn’t, be, you know, yeah, like a logo. From a Word document, I had to actually learn to to do like stuff in Illustrator, because I would get people’s logos for screen printing and they would send it in like a word document or like a tiny JPEG.
And then you obviously can’t screen print that because you need to separate the colors and you got to have it vector, so you can make it the right size and stuff. So that’s how I learned illustrator in the first place, but definitely that’s helpful and, like you say you don’t really even notice you get that file and you’re like oh, this doesn’t work and you fire up illustrator or Photoshop and like 20 minutes later, you’ve got something That you can use – and I think people who don’t have that background – I just like back and forth with the client.
Do you have a vector version of this or whatever and it becomes a nightmare yeah. I don’t even ask anymore if I can do it. I just knock it out, but I mean I don’t know I don’t know about you, man. I don’t always pay attention to what tools you have open on your computer there, but if I’m designing a website, I almost always have Photoshop open, because I’m resizing photos things and I didn’t really have illustrator open as well, because I might be making some icons or Making some kind of pattern for a background or whatever it may be.
Are you the same way Matt yeah, the majority of the time both of those are open for sure yeah? So I wonder what it looks like for the web designer that doesn’t have those tools or similar tools. I know not everybody’s on Adobe’s expensive plans, but yeah. That would be something, and I will say I think, one of the biggest benefits that I found in this transition – and this is you know some people will identify with this, and some people won’t as far as working in a print shop, doing graphic design stuff.
I have enough creative skills to make something look nice, but where, where I was actually most valuable, is the fact that I could. I knew how to use the programs really well and get things done really quick and they would look nice. I’r not I’m not an artist, you know, so I’m not making things that are that are are super artistic are super creative and that actually lends itself really well to web, because you don’t really want a functional website to be a piece of art.
Necessarily all the time it needs to be functional. First, like it can be beautiful too, but a lot of times. That just means it’s, you know simplistic or user friendly and stuff like this. So, where I kind of I have always felt, I lacked in creative ability and artistic ability. A lot of those things are masked by websites just by nature of what you have to do in that kind of work. Have y’all noticed that yeah and so the the type of the type of artwork that you’ve done in the past Shane? You know you talked about doing screen, printing and stuff like that.
What what kind of what kind of tools, or I’m not really tools, but what kind of habits have you formed that you think are the most valuable that have translated to web yeah? I guess I would say, like I mentioned, just being able to use illustrator and turn stuff into into vectors and stuff, I would say, that’s super valuable and then just understanding design from a different point of view, like not.
A lot of people have had experience with designing for clothing print, you know, and so sometimes that can come in really handy luck and give you a different perspective on design. For example, when you doing screen printing, like how many colors you have in a design, affects the cost of production hugely. So if you had a one color print on a t-shirt, it’s much cheaper than like a four five or six color prints on a t-shirt, and so now you’ve got these constraints that you have to design within.
I’ve got a one color background, which is the t-shirt, and my budget allows me to only make one color design for the prints. So now I’ve got two colors the background and the image on the foreground and I’ve got to make something. That’s appealing and looks good, but I’m only allowed to use two colors and obviously in Webb you don’t have that constraint, but you’ve got you. You’ve got the experience, that’s taught you how to work within those constraints, and it opens up your horizons to like stuff.
That might look good, even though you don’t have to do it like that. So I think of this example like when Photoshop first got the bevel and emboss thing rights, everybody did that it was like an exactly right and so then tools like elemental and stuff come along and they they make like motion possible. You know like those animations with the scroll, animations and or now you can do gradient backgrounds and then everyone’s AK gradient backgrounds on everything and when you scroll stuff, is just going to like move all over your screen.
And so I think, having like to work within constraints, taught me that you don’t always have to use like the later trend, and you don’t always have to make something buzzy to make. It look good, actually, a lot of the time stripping down and simplifying. It is going to make a design work better and it’s going to communicate to the viewer better what you want to communicate, so I think like that’s probably for me.
The main thing is that to first try to think like how can I make this look good within some constraints and then not be tempted to just use all the bells and whistles all the time? You know you guys feel about that. No, I agree, and and the the bevel and emboss is a good, a good example of that yeah. So, like I said, I’ve kind of transitioned, my company, the only people I’m doing any kind of graphic design work for our existing customers that have just done graphic design, work for in the past and pretty much other than that.
If somebody calls calls me up or emails me, I turn that kind of work away or refer them on, and I took all that kind of stuff off. I used to have pages for graphic design and stuff on my website, and I took all that off long ago and the main reason for me on all that was a business decision and me and Matt have talked about this a little bit and I’d like to Get your thoughts too, as somebody who I haven’t chatted with this about, but to me web seems so much more profitable than graphic design and and Matt.
How have you seen that in your business, 100 % most of the the print work that I do is almost considered doing at a loss? Almost I I still do it because one it’s clients, like you, said that you know they’ve, always they’ve hired me in the first place to do stuff like that and then the stuff that I take on like other outside new new clients. Those are usually the projects that just sound fun and if I’ve got you know a little bit more free time I’ll take them on, because I still do like doing it, but but no you’re you’re, absolutely right now, maybe maybe we’re just bad at pricing.
Graphic design. So what do you say to all that Shane? I think I’m definitely in agreement. The first thing that comes to mind is that it’s very difficult to generate recurring revenue with graphic design right web lends itself, because someone has this like. Hopefully, what is an asset in their website that that’s an income generating tool for them? They’re willing to pay monthly for somebody to make sure that that thing’s running smoothly and it’s working and it’s it’s updated and all of those things that we do in our care plans.
So to get some some recurring revenue from web design. I’ve found is way easier than graphic design like huh. I still haven’t thought of anything like how do you and if their services like design, pickle and do designer and those things where someone can get actually pretty good graphic design for a very low cost. And it’s hard to compete with that, so I don’t really do graphic design so much, although I still offer branding like logo, design and brand development because mostly because I really love it, but I priced it very high, so I probably get I think last year I Had three projects the whole year doing that, so it’s definitely not bread and butter, but I still do it because I love it, but I’ve priced it to the point where most inquiries I get.
They think that I’ve gotten crazy. So I mostly like those those inquiries. Just turn into nothing and I’ll, get like one every now and then who sees the value but yeah. The recurring revenue for me is that the biggest thing like I think, they’ve been times in my business, where we would have had to shut down. If we didn’t have recurring revenue that covers like all the expenses and stuff, so it’s funny.
You say that because I want to think back to the sign shops I worked in. I don’t think I’d ever heard the phrase like monthly recurring revenue that wasn’t part of my like business vocabulary, because we had nothing like that and we we would go to wilds wild swings and business and we knew that December would be a really slow month. So we kind of planned for that all year, but yeah we would. We would have months where we’d sell twenty thousand dollars.
Then the next month we’d sell a hundred thousand dollars and that’s just kind of how it was because there was there was no kind of product we could really offer to even that out for people. So that’s that’s! Not something! I’d really looked back on and thought about. You know in just graphic design in general, it’s really hard to do that. Recurring revenue type stuff, yeah. I think pricing is really difficult to like.
I know in my in my area my local area, like it’s really difficult to to get potential clients to see the value of like you know, branding and and and like full-fledged logo design. I don’t think the vast majority of potential clients out there. You know over $ 600 is absolutely like out of the picture for for any kind of key, and I think about a lot of times. The the main reason for being a business decision for me was how much more money I can make in an amount of time.
So if somebody comes to me and says I need this poster designed my design process is I’m going to sit here in Photoshop Illustrator and throw a million things at the wall until all of a sudden one little thing will click, sometimes that happens in five minutes And sometimes I have to walk away from it for a day and come back and try again and and that’s that’s always kind of just been the way I design things, and sometimes it comes quick and sometimes it doesn’t but designing a poster or flyer or brochure.
Something could be something that takes me. I might have six or eight hours worth of time into that and designing a trifold brochure. I think the last time I did that I charge like 250 bucks, so $ 250 for six or eight hours with the work is not a really good payday, when I’ve also had web projects that come in where the customer supplied me with all the copy, and I had all the assets I needed and I built their entire website in the day and charge $ 2,500, and I just look at those legs as a business decision that it’s it’s just not nearly as profitable and you walk away from that.
They build most likely with recurring revenue from there on anyway. So so, if there’s people out there listening right now that that have been doing graphic design and are here in the admin bar because they’re kind of checking out web for the first time. Let’s try to think of some of the advice we could give them. You know that we learned over time so Matt. Let me start with you what what are some of the things you would try to study first about web coming from a graphic design background.
I think jumping into like, like UI UX is probably one of the the best things you can do right out the gate, because you know like it’s already been mentioned today. I think the the the not using every tool to your your you know. That’s that’s like readily available to you, like paring things down kind of going in a minimal route and really thinking about how a user or a visitor like uses the website and how what you’re doing is either going to help or hinder them, because it is an Interactive medium versus a print, which is you know to a lesser extent, interactive like sure you can change what what folds on a trifold you see first, but you know it’s it’s it’s pretty straight forward, so I think that learning like how people interact with with what You’re building is probably one of the best things to learn right out.
The gate. Yeah that’s a mind. Shift too. I remember I remember having to like Google a lot of things about UX until that whole thing made sense to me because, like you’re saying with you know, if I was designing a business card or brochure or assignment hung on the wall, I would think about things Like you know, legibility can. Can we read this from a certain amount of distance and and that’s kind of a form of user experience? Can the user driving down the road read this sign, but we never used? We never used the term user experience you know.
So I think, that’s a big mind shift they’re, just trying to think about these things, as it’s kind of like you said, interactive things, people are engaging with is a lot different, so same question to you Shane. What would what would be some things? Some advice you can offer Pia and Matt Matt went with uh. I asked him about some kind of mindset, type things. What would you say? You talked about you Dovan and started learning some code and stuff, so kinda on that side of things, which is going to be very foreign to a graphic designer.
What kind of resources our stuff would you recommend people check out? So I think for me the very first thing would be CSS, because it’s the language, it’s very human, readable language. So it’s easy to pick up, but it’s also the one that is most closely attached to how things look. So if you’re a graphic designer coming into Web Design, that’s for me the obvious thing to get stuck into, because that’s the one that affects what you know the most.
You know so definitely CSS and I guess, if you’re in the WordPress ecosystem and picking up a little bit of PHP is a good idea, because even just to be able to read error codes with PHP, you know like your site drops down and at the top. There’s a white bar with some error codes, in which you look at it the first time and you think like this means nothing and then, but I think, with with the way Web Design seems to be going with all drag-and-drop.
It’s it’s not too important to learn. Php but CSS for me, is a huge one and in JavaScript or jQuery, is probably the next thing to go for, because that’s also something that really controls like the visual aspects of of what’s going on in the design but yeah. I think I would dive into CSS and then one thing I can highly recommend is a plugin called macro Thema. Yes, if you’re on the WordPress ecosystem macro FEMA is incredible: it’s a you.
You fire it up. It’s got a it’s got a visual representation of your site and then you can literally make changes to the CSS using little visual buttons and that changes immediately and you can see those changes. And so what I love about, that is that you you’re you’re, accessing it and doing it in a visual way, which you’d be used to as a as a graphic designer but you’re also learning CSS, while you’re doing it and almost unknowingly learning the CSS.
While you’re doing it because you’ll click on like the the little icon that shows borders and you’ll see it come up and you you tap in how much like border radius, there should be, but you’re actually learning that well, there’s a CSS rule called border radius and That controls have the rounded corners you know so for me, macro thema. I don’t really need it because I know CSS, but I use it anyway because it speeds things up and I’ve also learned like CSS rules that I didn’t know existed.
So that’s. That would be something I highly recommend if you’re coming from from graphic design. I still I mean I still struggle my way through any kind of code, including CSS, but using micro. Themer definitely taught me a lot about, like you said you know, being able to visually click on something and then just tell it. I want it to be. Blue was really easy inside micro, famers UI, but it has it spits out all that code and you kind of see that and it’s it’s certainly advantageous to to kind of study that and see what those changes are doing.
You know, through the code I’ve kind of forced myself most recently to get in there and at least try to write the CSS like try to find the selector try to write out the CSS of what I’m going to do, and you know maybe 30 % of The time it actually works and the rest of time I fail, but at least try to get in there and do it and just experiment with some things, because I mean it’s completely. I spent 15 years doing graphic design and didn’t think about these things at all.
You know so it’s it’s kind of hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but I agree with you that be the first one. I would tell people to jump in as well so I’ll be interested to see here in the group. How many people kind of came from the same background from from graphic design, web design tools like WordPress and then now even tools like Elementor make it really easy like? If, if tools like Elementor didn’t exist, I’d still be a graphic designer I’d probably still be working at a print shop because, like I said print print stuff’s expensive it’d be hard to start my own business, doing that especially harder than it is to do web stuff.
So because all these tools exist today, it’s fairly easy to make that transition. If it’s something you’re interested in so I’d be interested to see how many people in the group you know, like the three of us made that same transition so Matt before I wrap this up and we get out of here today. You have any final thoughts or anything. I did not cover yeah, actually so Shane when, when you started doing your t-shirt, designs and stuff like what what about what year was that that was 1999? Okay.
So I’m wondering because I started like almost the same way like I wanted to create, like some sort of a t-shirt, design business, which I think is one of the the things that a lot of like graphic designers try to do. First, because it is like super artistic – and you know it’s – it’s like an easier model to follow, so I want to say like around 2006 2007, I joined the community and I’m wondering if you you’d ever like solder around line, I think it was.
It was empties. First and then Minty’s when they rebranded yeah either those ringabel no. But I, if I, if I understand what it is, there were others like that. I can’t remember what they were called, but it it was like. I was the sack blank t-shirts and stuff right that you could do designs for so empties it was. It was like a community forum of like some of the best illustrators I have ever seen, and everybody that was there did like.
Primarily, you know three to four color designs. They worked a lot with, like you know, bands like My Chemical Romance the ones with the the big all over printing and like to see these guys. You know produce this stuff on like a weekly basis. Just this. This amazing artwork that really didn’t take them that long, but also when they posted their designs. They did like the breakdown the process like why they did what they did, and I think the biggest benefit for me was that you could post your own art and yeah.
There were definitely big personalities in that in that site, some of which were kind of hard to handle and they would tear your artwork apart, like absolutely like to the core like just break it down, but in the best way like they were, never mean about it. But I think that, like that’s skyrocketed, my my like layout design and, like you know the use of white space, the use of like patterns and texturing and, like all of that stuff, to have like a community like that.
So I like it’s just something that I thought, maybe you well, it’s kind of like the admin bar right for for full web designers. Although they’re not too many people tearing designs apart ya, know for sure like we have actually considered doing some critiques before. But I don’t know how well it plays yeah. I get the whole like well, Who am I to do that? You know yeah probably ought to stay away from that yeah, but it doesn’t stop me and Matt from jumping on a call on Zune, privately and destroying things, because we yeah for sure our own stuff too, like if I’m struggling with a layout.
I just hop on zoom with Kyle, I’m like what am I doing wrong here? What am I missing? I’ve been looking at this for far too long like yeah. It’s amazing, though, how quickly somebody else, especially you know, might have a lot of similarities in the way we design and obviously our background and stuff, but how quickly the other one can. One of us can snap the other one out of funk like that, like we’ll just change this to two different columns and put this over here and you’re like yeah, that’s, okay, yeah, it’s all fixed now! So I think a partner in crime is nice and all that kind of stuff.
