That’s the reason why we’re shooting today’s article to make sure that you are the most equipped and most prepared in order for you to survive this whole coronavirus today, we’re going to be talking about the seven ways that you’re going to be able to survive this coronavirus And these are the things I’m putting in place for my clients, these are things that I’m recommending to my colleagues, my friends, everyone and some of them are actually able to turn things around, because they’re able to implement these seven different tips – hey guys its Wilson here Owner of multiple seven-figure business, serial entrepreneur, if you guys, are looking in building a small business or if you’re thinking about building a restaurant of your dreams, make sure you subscribe along the journey because I’m going to be sharing with you all the experiences that I have.
The success, the failure is everything. So then, that way you can learn from it and to be able to build your own dream business if you’re affected by any means from this coronavirus make sure you guys come in yes in the section below and describe what situation you were in. So without further ado, let’s dive into the seven ways that you can survive this corona virus outbreak. The first way is to check with your government because they have a lot of relief programs out there to help you out.
Restaurants are the backbone of the whole country, backbone of the whole economy, so they were not going to. Let you collapse and II understand that as restaurant owners, we operate at the thinnest margins, which is reason why they have a lot of programs to help us out. For example, us has a two trillion dollar Kerr’s onyx and more than three hundred and fifty billion dollars for a federal small business loan program.
They have a paycheck protection program which can cover payroll costs, mortgage and rent payments. Health care benefits. Employees, including paid sick leave in Canada and Vancouver. We also have this seventy five percent wage subsidy provided by the government as well, which is a reason why you should try your best to make sure that you keep your employees employed. If you can even delivery services and at the same time, we also have these mortgage deferral program, so if you’re renting from a landlord, make sure that you bring this conversation up with your landlord and express to them your concerns.
So then, that way they can work hand-in-hand with you, because your success is their success. If you are out of business they’re going to be out of business and they’re going to be looking at a place, that’s going to be no rental income at all for years. To come, the second way that you can survive this whole criminal virus is to analyze your business health analyze, your business health, to to make sure you understand all the numbers understand how much of a long runway that you have when you are to close off your Restaurant close off all their operations and only pay for events, and that would be your son cost or calculate it if you’re running one person, two people, three people or delivery, only services, and that way you understand how long you can last throughout this whole chrono virus And this whole epidemic, if you do not know the runway, if you do not know how much cash you can spend or how long in the last, then you have no clue what kind of relief programs are you’re going to be needing to sign up for or Whether it’s better yet they’re just closed off the business altogether, or are you going to be able to live to fight another day for and just because you’re closing down doesn’t mean you’re admitting defeat? It could just be reserving all your ammunition and reserving all your cash flow to make the comeback just like how even Michelin star restaurants like an Alina, is even doing delivery services only.
So having said that, don’t be shy to close off your restaurants. Just so, then that way you can live to fight another day. Make sure you understand this business health of your business. If you guys are wanting to understand the business health in more detail, make sure you guys check out this article right here. That’s when I’m talking about how do you analyze the business health of your business and if we go into very thorough detail of all the different points that you should consider the third way to survive.
This whole virus is to get list that there are a lot of publications out there. This restaurants, that are still doing delivery as a service model only so make sure that you guys reach out to these publications within your city, to make sure that you get your restaurant out in the public till that other people know who to support and how they Can support you because, as citizens, we all want to be able to support all these local small businesses to help them survive, and that’s what I’m doing that saw a lot of my friends are doing it as well.
So if you guys are still operating as a delivery service, only make sure you guys get listed on these different platforms. Leverage their leadership leverage their database, if you guys, are getting any value whatsoever from this article, make sure you smash the like button, because it just shows me that this is the type of content you want now back to regular programming. The fourth way to survive this whole coronavirus is to turn your restaurant into a grocery store.
I know that sounds a little bit far off, but hear me out. A lot of people are actually waiting hours in line just to grab that last kind of milk, glass. Carton of eggs, yet if you’re able to transform a restaurant into a temporary grocery store where you still have the logistics, and you still have your suppliers that bring in and deliver all these staple items to your restaurant, you can open up doors to your neighborhood.
So then, that way they can come in and grab all the essential items. Not only are you able to be able to benefit from making some money in order for you to cover room, but also you’re able to build that community base around you, they’re going to be thankful that they don’t have to check for eyes. For, like tens of minutes just to go to the grocery store and then wait for the lineups, they can just come to your store, which is much closer.
Much more convenient pick up the staple items and get going so when the times are better, they can come back to support you and now you’re building a real community. On the same note of being creative, the fifth note to survive this whole coronavirus is to reuse your dining space, just because you’re out of business, just because you don’t want to do grocery market does not mean you can just leave this space empty.
You can do so much with it turn it into a studio turn it into YouTube, studio and start teaching people. How do you cook your master dish and your recipe and show people the behind-the-scenes stuff be creative with this? So when you are still nurturing your community, don’t just stay at home and just be like stressing about not being able to pay for rent, and this not be creative. With the space that you have be creative with the audience that you have and start building the brand and start building this community, because this is the time to do so – a sixth way to survive.
This Oprah no virus is to make sure your web presence is on point a lot of times when you’re working in the restaurant business you’re putting out fire after fire after fire. That means you’re working in the business. This is time to work on the business work on stuff that you can control, make sure you optimize your website is the menu most up-to-date on your website. Is your contact? Information on your website? Is your social media on point? Is it all congruent is at all? Like make sure everything is in time make sure that everything is most up-to-date make sure that you start communicating with your audience and then that way you can build that brand awareness where, as when your shop opens, you just don’t have the time to deal with them.
Now’s the time for us to work on the business, because everyone else is sleeping you’re working on the business. So when times are good again, you are going to be right in front of everyone else. The seventh way to fight this whole coronavirus and to make sure that you are going to be intact after this whole pandemic is over is to start a DIY kit. A lot of my friends are actually doing that and they’re seeing tremendous amount of success with it, because everyone’s home, everyone wants to be able to do something because they can’t go out anymore and they can only eat so much takeout, which is a reason why DIY Kits are so popular now, because, basically you have all ingredients.
You package it in a way that is nice and not as transportable you send it to them, send them the instructions and people are gobbling up. These DIY kits like no tomorrow, because they just want to have an activity to bond with their other half, and now they have something to do so think about creative ways of packaging. Your recipe and your goods pre make the sauce pre, make everything and just give it to them, make it super super simple for them to make DIY recipe that is signature to your restaurant after this whole thing blows by they’re, going to have that much more attachment To your brand, so there you go the seven ways that you can out beat this whole coronavirus with your restaurant.
So then that way you can come out on top number. One is to check with your government officials and your government relief programs. They offer ton of thing to support you, because you are the backbone of this economy. Second way is to analyze your business health understanding, how much more lifeline you have understanding. When is it that you need to call quits understand all your numbers, so then that way, you can be proactive and not reactive to circumstances.
If you guys want more about this, make sure you guys check out this article. Once again, I talked about it and depth about how do you analyze your business? Health third way is to get listed on local directories, because a lot of different publications are featuring companies or restaurants that are still open during this pandemic and offering delivery services so make sure you guys get listed with these publications.
Fourth way is to be creative and to turn your restaurant into a grocery store, because a lot of people are still going to go. Shoe stores lining up for hours if you can have all the staple items at your store and turn it into a temporary grocery store, you’re going to be able to create that loyal fan base. The fifth way is to make sure that you are being creative, with your space, whether it be turning into studio and turning it into a educational YouTube blog.
So then, that way, you can shoot content to share with your community. Whatever it is, you are still building a lot of more brand awareness and loyalty to your community. Number six is to make sure your online presence is on point start working on your business instead of working in your business all the time, and now is the time to do that, because after this whole pandemic is over and everyone’s going to go out and eat.
Because they need to go out of their doors and finally have DIY kits: DIY kids are on the boom and on the rise, because a lot of people want to do something with their other half. So if you have the ingredients there, if you all, if you have your special signature, sauce done package them all together, put it out there for sale and a lot of people will buy into that. So there you go. I really hope that you can come out of unscathed, but unfortunately I know a lot of you are stuck in a really really bad pickle.
So if you have any questions whatsoever, I’m going to be here for you, I’m going to be answering all your questions to the best of my capability to help you out. So if you have any questions, make sure you guys leave in the comment section below and I will answer to every single one of them, because that’s just my way of giving back to you otherwise make sure you subscribe along the journey and I’ll see you guys In the next article,
Who is helping with your digital business footprint?
1 on Linux, we’ll run it in boom, even though that isn’t its native Linux distribution, because I’ve run that one a lot in the past and I can configure it pretty easily, for it will run timeline performance as well as some renders, and I think you might be surprised by the results let’s get to it.
As with all our timeline benchmarks, we’ll start by making sure that we delete our optimized media, we uncheck all of our proxy options, ensure that we’ve got no render cache no fusion cache. This gives us a realistic view of what it looks like when the processor is working and the graphics card is rendering in timeline. Next thing you can see is that indeed, I’ve installed the proprietary drivers, don’t kill me for the Nvidia graphics card and the 2080 TI is crankin, we’ll zoom in so we can see the timeline performance as it plays back you’ll notice.
It sticks to the framerate. That’s the intended frame right here 2997. This is a gh 5 shooting in 8-bit color h.264, with the f1 720 millimeter Prime. I’ve got a little bit of noise reduction in these clips, which is why it surprises me that it sticks so well as it does to 2997. In fact, the only time we really see any challenge with this footage as we’re playing it back in the linux system, is when we throw in the fusion clips, and that tends to jump over to the processor, not that being the cpu and creating a little bit Of a bottleneck because it has to render and then push out those titles, even there, though you saw it, was pretty smooth and pretty quick.
Let’s check out the system statistics as it’s running will pop up the system monitor here and what you’re seeing is the G? The CPU threads as they execute, let’s keep in mind that we’re running OBS. Of course we do that when we do our benchmarks and windows and I display them as well, so I think it’s kind of fair they’re reading these threads as fusion does its work. To put title screens up, you see that a few of them run off by themselves and that’s a 32 thread workstation processor here.
But when you’ve got one, that’s primarily doing all the work. It tells you that the application is not multi-threaded in a way that it can leverage the cpu architecture. This is something that backs up exactly what I’ve seen in Windows, as fusion does its job, because I’m too lazy to format one of my nvme drives set it up with Linux, I put in a SSD 120 gigabyte standard, kingston SSD, and it’s the only difference between The windows and the Linux machine configuration inspect on to the results of our render test, which, as always, ran three each test three times and was able to take the average.
You can see immediately off the bat in linux. The h.264 blue bar is significantly shorter than the one over in the window space. Now this was weird because I used the hardware encoder in both instances on the twenty atti. There’s a question as to whether or not the encoder got more resources in Linux, but it achieves a 15 percent difference and improvement over the windows. Encoder crazy. As you can see, that is not what I expected.
I thought with the hardware encoder in the graphics card running both sets of tests we’d end up with effectively the same thing. I don’t know if more memory was available to the graphics card in Linux, because the genome desktop was less heavy than maybe the windows. Who knows, but it’s cool cool data to have and hope it might help you thanks for reading, please I do respond to all the comments. So if you have questions or something weird, you want researched.
Let me know I love doing that stuff and subscribe and like if you would thanks for reading, have a great day.
Videos are truly an awesome way to get the point across. Any type of content from your business is important!

This is not Boogie Nights. There’s not boogie, I can show you fine Joseph Anthony gave us five bucks thanks a lot joseph Anthony. Okay, let’s see the knife all right, so here’s the back side of it. Oh yes, micro tags, front side of it awesome very cool. Okay on the right side of it right so yeah, usually with these right, there, yeah yeah yep, like that, it’s usually on the side, and they put it right there on the face of it.
So when you draw it out of your pocket, your thumbs right on the button also micro Tech’s, are coming out now. Look at that bow sorry projects coming out. This is awesome: okay, micro Tech’s, just the way to go with on everyone, put a micro tech up on the screen right now, let’s see there, you go boom by the way mine it might is the best. Can you see that? Can you see the logo on that yeah? I see that wow.
That’s the Hank strange logo on there, something like that for you, yeah, no micro Tech’s are awesome, but you’re right. I know Lola actually likes those micro texts that have it flat, they’re like what yours is Mac yeah. She says these one hyper see. Yes, these are just two. You know she doesn’t like. Like you know, she’s, I guess she doesn’t have the thumb strength. So it’s not a is that a combat turn honor.
No, this is this is uh. What is this thing? Aut? X85, so gtx, 85. Okay, I didn’t, I couldn’t see ya. Ah there we go now. I can see you TX 85 and then I had it lasered. It yeah I had it lasered at pbk in Vegas. I don’t know if you I’ve been there. It’s like a little tiny little tiny store in Vegas, but they have. They have all the micro techs. You can, I think, they’re the biggest distributor for micro, techs they’re.
Pretty large yeah there’s a lot of gun guys when they’re in Vegas they go to that store and buy micro, Tex and stuff was just what I needed to hear you were only in you were only at shot show for like what a day. Neither a couple days couple days: I did not see my bolt out huh yeah and it only came back. I felt a little sick for like two days mm-hmm and then Jason got strep throat, pneumonia and flew a okay God.
He was laid up for a week and a half. What was he doing in Vegas? I don’t know hands touched. The same guns stayed in the same room, so I don’t know how in the world he got all that and I got away with just basically a sniffle you’re, probably immune at this point. Maybe I’ve been exposed to about everything so yeah run a virus Irie man, hey man – that may still happen so yeah, you’ve Kember the time at Vegas.
A long time ago, when you were literally green, oh yeah yeah. I got the flu really bad. That was like the hospitalization flu yeah yeah. Exactly I did not see you. I had all these jokes and stuff like that. You know when I figured out you coming to Vegas. I have all these jokes like this must be the ghost of Mack. Whenever speaking to you it’s possible, so I what the emergency room and I was like on my deathbed and they they they said.
Well, we can give you the you know the Tamiflu, but some sometimes the symptoms are as bad or worse than the flu itself, and I said well, I can’t do that. I’m in town for a trade show and I’m like laid up in bed. Is there anything you can give me that can get me through the day you know and, and they gave me a prescription for something I went to Walgreens on the strip and got it filled, went back to Circus Circus to my dank little hotel room.
Mm-Hmm didn’t read: the label didn’t google it, and so I went to bed woke up in the morning and I thought well, you know if one’s good, twos better and I took a tool and I got to the show and Aaron was with me and I just Got pale and about dropped and dude, you need to go back to the hotel room and, I said yeah: let’s go back and gets me back to the hotel room and I lay down and when I finally, you know get my senses about me again, I google, What it is it’s like some super-powerful opioid yeah.
Do you remember what the name of it was? I could check late low low and I was like holy smokes mm-hmm. It was like some man, I guess you know opioids or something can get you through the flu. I didn’t know that and not all of us could take those either. I I can’t take any opioids that see I can’t do morphine. She did ask what I’m allergic to and I said morphine but uh. Sorry, I guess that’s she said I coke a you know.
Here’s something just as bad or worse, take this okay say: don’t take two. Just you sound like half of Lola’s patients, yeah everything not to do yeah exactly yeah. Oh, I see her end. Only take one yeah yeah, exactly I hate take. I don’t like take a joke man, that’s why I don’t drink and stuff it just yeah. I think the whole pharmacy thing is conspiracy. I know we have this argument all do I back.
Oh no. They got, though, the boys got vaccinated and all that kind of stuff, but I just think the whole pharmacy thing is crazy. Now I think it’s crazy yeah and then the next thing you know they’ll flip it on us and they’ll just use vending machines. Oh, I know yeah, it’s a good argument against capitalism. When people you know say: oh, it’s, oh you’re, a free-market capitalist, you say yeah and then they go well.
What about pharmaceuticals? Okay? So you pull up one thing that you know: people abuse the hell out of and yeah screw patients over with. But there’s I don’t know if anyone reades Rick and Morty other than me, but there’s a Rick and Morty we’re like the alien planet takes over Earth and they’re. Just given everyone pills like pills of breakfast pills for lunch, ever probably we’re yeah. Yes, 1960s, like here’s.
Some for everybody shooting gallery and he gave us five bucks. He says: hey, hey, whats, cracka, lackin, everyone so shout out to him. Kathleen said that she hit the vitamin C. I was doing the and you know, come to think of it. Jason wasn’t. I was taking all sorts of supplements, mm-hmm and everything from elderberry supplements to you know. What’s that you know zinc and B and C, and I mean I was just.
I was overdosing on the stuff every day. Yeah, maybe that’s what saved me. Vitamin C is good. It is to get a lot of that stuff in your system is good, because I think your body cannot absorb vitamin C, but it’ll it’ll help flush everything out with it on the way out. So I think that’s yeah thing, so a greasy hamburger in my case, but a greasy burger in Vegas is like what is that, like 25 bucks, this is what a greasy hamburger, yeah yeah, make sure to check out ham, strange calm.
You can sign up for our email list and find ways to follow and support our efforts.
Knives and daggers are awesome! Plain and simple, right? Let me say, I enjoy my dagger collection with a little music playing in the background.
So I seen the internet like so many people have this bargain about how you know: extroverted people or better at sales and introverted people, and what I’ve come to find. Is that that’s just not true. Actually, birds, you know, have their perks and then introverts have their perks and just because you’re, an extrovert doesn’t mean you’re any better than an introvert when it comes to sales or anything for that matter.
So I’ve been some research, and I dug into these different topics of you – know the strengths and weaknesses of introverts and then extroverts and I’ve come to find that it really doesn’t matter. I’m an introvert myself. I’ve always been a little shy when it comes to social interactions. Introverts tend to get really deep on subjects, so the all like the small talk and like outer layer communication isn’t really.
It doesn’t really click well with introverts, where with extroverts, they don’t really focus on the deeper layer of things it’s more of the outer layer. So, for instance, I have a friend who’s who’s, very extroverted. You know when we go to social gatherings. You know he’s really. The one that’s you know engaging the most. He you know attracts people into his conversation. You know loud funny, but the topic of conversation isn’t really deep layered, it’s really like outer layers.
So what do I mean by like outer layer? Well, you know he could be having a very you know, great conversation, but it’s about, like you know how drunk he got like a story of how drunk he got. One night, it’s very you know for introverts is not really a very captivating story, but you know at the social setting it’s very captivating, because it’s very outer layer, so outer layer in that particular scenario, is a story of having that drunk.
Let’s talk about like an inner layer, topic conversation for an introvert, an inner layer. Deep layer is talking about like how there’s corruption in politics and we go into depth about the reasons why this corruption, and because this happened. This is the result and they go like super super deep. So that’s like my my explanation of explaining the difference between like outer layer, extroverts and deeper layer introverts.
So let’s talk about sales. So, for me, like being really shy, not really like great social skills, when I get on the phone I’m terrified immediately, I’m always nervous, no matter what, even if I’ve done over thousands of phone calls, I still get nervous right. So let’s say I get on the call with a potential client. I you know, I cold called them and you know hey Dan. You know I was running through your website and everything looks awesome.
I wanted to discuss with you. You know if there’s any issues you’re having you know not with your business, I offer a lot of variety different services. I love to see how I can help you know pitching him. What I do, if I’m feeling like a little nervous that day I’ll start asking more questions what you should do, if you’re feeling shy if you’re very introverted like me, is ask questions, because people love to talk about themselves.
So if you’re asking questions you’re doing less talking and the person you’re on the phone with is doing the most talking so really all you’re doing is you’re just really listening to them. Listening to their problems, it’s seeing how you can come up with solutions for it. So that’s like a big tip. I would give introverts so if you’re doing sales calls or if you’re, just in normal social interactions like if you’re out like a networking event, is to ask questions, it’s very very important.
If you’re an introvert, you should be listening. 90 % of the time you don’t have to talk, you don’t have to come up with this amazing story. You don’t have to do this whole pitch. Just ask questions and listen. That’s like my biggest tip of advice that I can give introverts when it comes to sales networking anything that has to do with social interactions. So past questions guys, you got to be a good listener right.
There’s like the skill of listening that a lot of people take for granted, I mean I feel like most interactions. It’s always like each person’s trying to get their point across before the other person and there’s not really much listening going on like there, because they’re always constant trying to get your point across. So if you just like to take a step back, there person view and just like listen to the other person, you’ll be able to come up with a better topics.
Conversation better responses and you’ll also be less anxious because you’re actually listening to the person, rather than trying to think of like what you’re going to say next after they’re done speaking so listening is super super key. So when you get on the phone with a potential client and you’re, you know say introverted, you know explain to them. Why you’re calling today right, that’s important.
You can’t believe that part out, but then go right into questions. You know go right into questions asking them like you know, how’s, your business are there, any prongs are having what you better and then just listen. So honestly, listening guys, super-powerful ask questions very powerful, get to it, and that is my take on how to crush it. At sales as an introvert hope, you guys enjoyed the article.
Please leave a like. Please do the comment see you guys in the next one.
I just wanted to go over these, these differences between business manager and ads manager. Those are the two main portals, the two main pages that you’ll have to get familiar with, as you go into more Facebook advertising and if you’re running ads for other clients or other businesses, then for sure you guys already know that the differences, but a lot of You guys that are beginners, this is beginner stuff, and this is important stuff, and this is really all there is to it.
It’s pretty simple once you really dive into it. But when you come to Facebook, everyone, everyone kind of knows how to run an ad right. They come to Facebook and then they’ll, either click on create’ and they’ll click on add or you can come over here to your drop down and you can click on manage ads and you can get to the ads manager that takes you over here where you can Actually run the ad. What I would do, if I are you is, I would bookmark this page.
This is your ads manager. This is where the green button is at wherever you see this green button make sure you bookmark this page and Facebook’s always changing the format and the layout of, but also you should still be able to see this. This green button, though this is where the magic happens. You want to bookmark this page. For sure this is your ads manager. This is where you’ll be running your ads from, but the business manager is, if you want, is, if you have multiple businesses, let’s say, for example, you have multiple projects that you actually run yourself, your business.
Your actual you know, income like I have like these are all incomes, that these are all businesses that I just setup right now like these are all new accounts. I needed one for my clients. I needed one for my inspire to digital, which is a completely different product, FB ads for beginners, a completely different product digital agency blueprint, the social real estate agent. These are all different products within my business right within my company under inspired digital, so I needed business manager, so I can set up multiple ad accounts, where I can run ads out of these different accounts and be billed for those projects for those ads right like For example, a digital agency blueprint, that’s a that’s a complete different product.
I don’t want to be running ads out of this account from that. I don’t want to be running ads from TS. Rea clients in the digital agency blueprint account right like so. You wouldn’t do that like ads that you that you’re running from inspired digital, you don’t want to be running those types of ads in this ad account because it just it it would get confusing. And when you separate everything it just, it allows you to be more accountable.
It allows you to be able to look at the numbers and know exactly what’s being spent per product or per project or on different on different on different yeah, different things that you got going on. So this right here, these different at accounts. You can only have before you used to have unlimited Facebook would give you like damn near as many as you wanted, but I think now it’s only five. You can only have five ad accounts under your actual name.
Okay, so some of the one ad account I’ll use to run simple ads for clients, but now, as I go into the new year, I’m going to be doing way more Facebook advertising for clients. So I won’t even be running it out of my ad account I’ll, be running it out of their ad account, but I still have this one set up, and then I just set up these other four, because these are going to be for projects that I roll Out in 2020, and so again inspired digital, a completely different product, and I don’t want to be running ads out of that account in the digital agency blueprint account because they’re completely different products.
So this is one huge reason why you would you would want to set up your business manager, so you can have multiple accounts if you have multiple products, if you just have one product and you’re just doing your your one business and that’s it, then then you Wouldn’t necessarily need business manager, you’ll just need the ads manager and again the way you get to the ads manager is come over here and click on create and click on, add and that’s going to bring you to the ads manager.
100 % of you guys have this part setup by default, it’s already there. This is one account right. You guys have one ad account and you’re running everything out of that one ad account – and here is the ad account up here, so you have that one out account now the business manager, it’s only for those that have multiple businesses, multiple products and you need multiple Accounts: okay, that’s number one and then number two reason why you would need business manager is, if you’re actually running ads for clients.
So if you’re running ads for clients, then you’ll need to access their business page and that’s done through the business manager through the business manager you go into the settings. I have articles on how to request access to business pages. In fact, I cut a article. A few days ago, so go back and look at that. One um actually know what I’ll tie it to the end of this one so so stay to the end of this one, and I’m going to tie it to the end of this.
One you’ll see that pop up at the bottom here at the end of this article. That’s how you request access to someone’s business page. So, if you’re that individual, if you’re, that freelancer, if you’re, that that that marketing agency and you’re going to be running ads for other businesses, you’ll need business manager to request access to their business. Page. Ok, so stay to the end of this article and you’ll see a pop up.
You can read that one if you do not know how to request access to other people’s business page. So that’s the second reason why you need business manager. The third reason why you would need business manager is, if, let’s say, for example, these are all your products right. Let’s say you just start blowing up and you’re, crushing it and you start making a ton of money, and you start hiring people to delegate this stuff to.
You can start assigning roles and start attaching their name to these accounts, so they can maybe log in update it run an ad manage your facebook business page. This is, as you start to grow and, as you start to get bigger, you start to bring people onto your team. Those are people that you can give access to to these different ad accounts or give access to the entire system or give access to your facebook business page.
Then you’ll need business manager, so you can start assigning roles to different people, so business manager is super. Super important and again a lot of you guys that are solo, solo, solo, printers and you’re just individual, and it’s just you right, you’re, your own! It’s just you you most likely have different projects that you want to roll out right. You probably have different ideas of different things that you want to start rolling out, set up.
Your business manager set up your business manager. That way, you can have different ad accounts and you can start testing out of different accounts, those different products. Okay, so this is the business manager you guys the ads manager is simply to run ads out of. This is where, once the business manager is all set up and in it’s all said and done, I’m going to still have to come over here to run my ads, so the ads manager bookmark this page, the business manager bookmark this page and what I do on The business manager is, I actually bookmark the business settings so once I set up the business manager, then I’ll go over to the business settings, and this is this is a page that I actually bookmark.
So it’s this one, it’s this one up here so I’ll bookmark. This page for sure and then and then and then I could manage all these different accounts, all these different pages. I can request access to all these different pages. I can. I can set up all the settings all right here. This is all business manager, business settings. So you for sure want to do that and when you, google, to setup your business manager come over to Google and just Google it Facebook business manager and then as you’re over here, you can read about what it what it is.
The business page overview like about Facebook, business manager. So let’s read about what what it says here on the Facebook page of about Facebook, business manager, business manager helps advertisers, integrate Facebook, marketing efforts across their business and with external partners. So that’s what I was talking about. You can use this free platform to run and track your ads manage assets such as your pages and add accounts.
Add an agency or marketing partner to help manage your business. Keep your work and personal life separate. Your business manager is a central space to manage your business separate from your personal Facebook profile. You don’t have to worry about mixing your business and your personal content. Anyone can use business manager so create business manager. If your business has a marketing team, you manage assets, which is you manage multiple Facebook or Instagram assets.
Assets such as a Facebook such as facebook pages, add accounts or apps. So, if you’re an agency, if you’re a freelancer and you’re accessing other people’s business pages, that’s what this is referring to. You use it as a vendor. You work with vendors to help create, run or manage your pages or ads, but want your business to maintain ownership of all your assets. You need control over your over access and permissions.
You want complete jurisdiction over your assets without giving ownership to people who assist your business operations. You want your business to grow. You want to keep your business. Secure. Business manager is gradually introducing new safeguard tools through the new Security Center to help you maintain control reassess. So that is the most the more technical you know definition of Facebook business manager, but hopefully you guys understand it by now and a lot of you guys are just starting out.
You know. Abs manager is kind of where you’ll spend your time and all you’ll need. But as you grow as you take on clients, if that’s your thing, then your business manager is what you’ll want to set up as well, so Google, Facebook business manager and it will take you to how to set it up. You guys super super simple. In fact, you know what let’s just mines already set up, so it’s not taking me through it, but here’s a set up, create business manager right here.
So tell you right here how to set it up. Bam right here, go to business. Facebook.Com create account enter your name enter a name for your business, your name and work, email address and click next enter your business details and click Submit. That’s it, and so my business is inspired digital and that’s why everything is separate from from my personal name. It’s oh, it’s its own asset, it’s its own entity and it sits right there on Facebook all right.

Looking for a company that will have your back? Check out the video below:
If you want to see a little bit more in depth of this planner duo, I got the daily duo to review a little early. I will link a card up in the corner for you guys, but I am going to bust into one of these and we’re going to do a little pen test for you guys. I have a ton of pens here and just wanted to I already kind of already kind of started doing things, so I’m going to use yeah I’m going to use this side of the paper, because, on the very back of these daily duo’s, usually there’s a bunch Of notes pages, if you have like a regular life planner, not the duo, but this one only has the two pages and the one I would do it on won’t show any shadowing, because it’s got like the Erin Condren information page at the back.
So this wouldn’t be very helpful, so I’m going to show it to you on this page, because I don’t mind if this page gets a little shadowing doesn’t bother me at all. So I’m going to use these blue pens, which I actually have a little box of blue and a box of black pens. I think I’ve got these little boxes at Michaels. You know like at the checkout in Michaels, there’s kind of like that little area where it’s like a couple: bucks or a dollar or whatever for certain things.
This was only a dollar, but I got two of them because I wanted to have a black and blue pen test. I feel like both of them would be redundant because I’m using the same thing that’s over and over and then at the end, I’m going to share with you guys these pens, which I here I’ll show you right now, but I’ll do it at the end. This is the box and I put washi tape in the Bott of it that this pen comes in, which will also be available on launch day, and it had like all this foam in there and I just ripped out the foam, because I wanted a place to Store these, which these are like a little click pens or pens and markers that have like the barrels so anyways.
I wanted a place to put them where they wouldn’t be like tossed all over the damn place. So this was my solution tada, so they fit in here pretty perfect. Alright! So there’s that so, let’s get into the pen test something on okay, I’m going to have to organize this a little bit. So it’s like markers and actual pens kind of so I kind of have it organized a little bit, but let’s zoom, mullion and yeah.
So for my regular pens that I have clearly a pencil is going to work just fabulously for you, but I wanted to show you guys some different pens. So I’m going to start out with my favorite actual pen like a gel pen, and this is the paper made ink joy, gel pen and the o7. I don’t know what it is about. This color is like a navy color, it’s not the blue one of my faves. This is the blue Pilot g2 in the 10.
So it’s like a thicker point. I, like a thicker point, anything like an O, 5 or less. I just am NOT into I like an O 7 or larger. That’s just my personal preference and pilot g2s were my favorite until I found the paper may enjoy gels, and I’m like okay, I, like those ones better. This is the jelly roll o 6 and also in a Navy. You can tell these pens have not been used in a while. I like legit, just keep them in that little clear container for these.
My other ones that I use on a daily, which I do use a lot of these daily, are other places. Okay, and this is the Erin Condren Navy. I don’t know what the point is on this and I don’t even know if they still have them, but some of you might still have these um in your arsenal and, I believe, they’re a gel pen. But let’s let’s see here yeah, that’s very, very pointy, not my fav, but um. You know it’s good to test them all, and then these are the pilot, precise rolling ball v 5 and they’re the extra fine.
I have a regular blue and then also a navy. So, let’s um, let’s try these out. I don’t. I think these are new word to my collection. I think I had a like gift pack like a pack of a bunch of these, so I don’t know: let’s try it yeah, not my favorite again, not as what as a pointy as the erin condren one but yeah, you know and I’ve. Never. I don’t think I’ve ever written with these before yeah to to uh mm.
I don’t know scratchy scratchy for me and then okay, we’re going to go with the erin condren sapphire a pen. These are the dual tip markers another, a cult classic and some of my favorites um. I am a fan of the medium tip, so we’ll go into that in just a moment: here’s the fine point side and then we’ll go to the medium, which is my fav. No just works well for me. I don’t know I like it. I like it better and then another favorite is the Paper Mate, and this is the peppermint flare.
I don’t know, I just love the flare they’re. Just nice they’re easy. They kind of go with most things unless you need a permanent marker which these most of these worked really well on glossy or difficult to write on stickers that have a little bit of a film, so these are kind of my more permanent style. Yes, so let’s get into this, this is the micron. Oh three, it’s the pigma micron. I can tell you right now.
I absolutely hate writing with these, but I know a lot of people. Absolutely love them again. It’s too Scratchy for me, whoops man down hold on, and I know I’ve gotten comments in these articles before like. Why do you keep all these if you hate them for this for this? This is why I keep them, because everyone has something different that they like, and then I want to show you if it’s shadows or if the shadowing would bother you – and these are all things I’ve either picked up over the years – that I know don’t work for Me or that have been gifted to me or put in some swag bag, and I just keep them because I know someone out there has them and they’d probably be interesting to see how paper holds up, not just erin condren paper, but other paper and stuff too.
So anywhere, so, let’s write this one down all right, pigma micron and then we’ve got that’s. Oh there’s two of these. I don’t. I don’t even test two of them. This is the lip pen and I actually really like the way that this, like the stroke of it like works, really well, but it’s still again. The point is to for me to it. I don’t know how to say it all right. Nice yeah – and this is the Stabenow – do the look.
I don’t know how to say it. I don’t say anything and then we’ve got this one, which I absolutely love. It’s the marks a lot permanent and these are in the ultrafine tip. I did some research online and this one you can only get in like a rainbow pack. They don’t have these yet and I hope they do at some point so Avery. If you’re reading, which I know they’re not you need to make pacts with just black and you need to pick make pacts with just blue trust me because I would buy them, but right now, you can only get them in a rainbow pack.
So these are the Avery marks a lot so good, so good y’all and it almost rivals this bad boy, which is my favorite fav, which is the pilot ultrafine point permanent type marker, I’m just going to put pilot ultrafine because you don’t need the rest of it. My favorite, that’s my favorite one, to write like for sure this one’s actually pretty good as well. This is the Sharpie permanent marker in the ultrafine a point, and this is actually navy.
I actually had to buy from a seller on Amazon, like a box of these and my god they’re. So good they’re not like this, like the lepen or the Avery, like that’s a very royal blue, where this is like a navy which I very much prefer like you, can see the difference. And then this is just a regular sharpie marker. Just a sharpie fine point like the ones you get like big boxes of at the office supply store, I’m just going to write, sharpie yeah and see the color between the two.
Much prefer the Navy fo sho. Okay. So that’s that, let’s look at the other side, and let me do this. Let me zoom you all in a little bit, so you can see the shadowing because I know that’s a big deal PS turning 40 on january. 9Th in case you want to, you know, send me some love, but what is the way but anyways, but yeah. You really can’t see too much shadowing too bad. Nothing would really bother me until these ones, like the Avery marks a lot and down so like the Avery marks a lot.
Let’s go like this, like the Avery marks a lot, the pirate pirate, the pilot ultra fine point, the Sharpie ultra fine and then our sharpie sharpie. Those would really bother me, but, to be honest, I personally write a lot with stickers. Like I put a sticker down and then I write with it, so really I don’t have a lot of this, but if you are concerned about shadowing, I wouldn’t do a permanent marker on this type of paper, and this is, I think I said this already, but It’s an 80-pound Mohawk paper and they’ve been using the same paper in their planners, for is this their third or fourth year.
I think it’s their third year doing this paper and it’s not a glassy feeling. You know paper is really glassy feeling it does have a little bit of a grip to it, which I think is great for people that want to use stickers or whatever it just. It doesn’t fly out of your hands, which I think is nice, but I really like the quality. That’s very. I don’t know it’s thick, but it’s not too thick. It’s not like cardstock thick, but it’s it’s good, but it’s like an 80 pound paper anyway.
So yeah here we go: oh, let’s zoom back out cuz. This is the weird and then why don’t we use some of these because I haven’t to be honest. I haven’t used check them out. There’s some highlighters, which I want to put all the like ones. Together. Cuz, you know neuroses and whatnot, alright, so with the highlighters, I’m just going to write highlighter right here, cuz. That seems like the easiest, and then this is like a ballpoint pen, just like a regular pen like a little twisty pen from Erin Condren, and you get this and the box.
But in the Box you get that um foam thing I was talking about that. I ripped out because I don’t like it so yeah you can tell I have never written with this, because it’s skipping and probably get the ball rolling on it. Quick. You know, like oh yeah kind of, have to do that to warm up the pens. Sometimes, let’s try this one well, what the heck! Maybe it’s just my pen, I don’t know, leaving a failure.
Okay and there’s like nothing behind it. So weird, okay! So it’s such a fail! You guys! Okay, let me try it down here. I just I don’t know. Okay, what is going on? Okay, it’s working fine on like this paper, but not on the Erin Condren paper, I’m so confused! Okay! Now it’s not even like what what the heck! Why is it working on here, but not oh, my gosh! You guys! Okay! Well! This is a fail. I I don’t know I don’t know what’s going on, but whatever let me just show you the highlighter.
All I wanted to do is just like go Knight Cadiz and go oh look at the fine line. It’s good uh, anyways! Okay! These are just the highlighter colors yikes, you know, sometimes it’s probably user error, because I am kind of the worst when it comes to certain things. But anyway, I didn’t use the little doodad over here, but that’s okay, alright, so the fine tips, there’s three fine tips and then the rest are medium tips.
So let’s do the medium tips. These feel exactly the same as the dual tip, medium for sure yeah. I really I like the medium. Like I said before I love the medium, I’m I’m not a fine tip girl at all. I, like a medium. The highlighters actually felt really nice as well so yeah. Let’s do some more medium yeah that one that one’s my jam yeah, I’m not sure of the colors the colors – will be listed on the website when everything is alive for you guys, I just don’t have the information right in front of me because you know I Just don’t: oh, I like this color.
This kind of I don’t know like sorbet kind of a color okay, so that is that and then they all come with this like barrel and there’s two barrels in the box that will be available on launch day. So there is that and then we have the fine tips so again, not a fine tip girl. That’s okay! That’s okay! I mean they write nice. It’s just you know not my preference and I have three fine tips. So look at this blue one down alright.
So, anyway, that’s the pen test. Let’s look at the back side of this, so you guys can see on let’s zoom y’all in just a little bit here: okay, okay, let’s go beyond where it says sharpie these are going to be. You know where every where all the colorful ones are, and I don’t really see too much in the shadowing. To be honest, I mean, when you lift it up, you can see it just slightly, but if you have a piece of paper behind it, you really don’t really don’t see it.
I see the most shadowing right here, which is when I tried to use this thing and I was like going yeah yeah like I couldn’t, couldn’t stop because the pen wouldn’t go for me so anyway, but that’s what it looks so, like close up, I really like The highlighters and I like the mediums a lot fines, not my jam, but I feel like if you like, a fine tip you’re going to like those markers and then with the versatility of the barrel kind of nice to just swap these in and out once in A while, alright, so that’s going to be the pen test for the new planners, which are the 2021 through 2022 Erin Condren life liners.
I will have a link down below for you guys if you are interested in any of the life planner products, as well as anything from the Erin Condren website, which includes these bad boys right here. It’s things related to affiliate marketing, online marketing and recently I’ve started learning day trade in which I’m going to be adding to the journal. Also so if that’s kind of stuff that you like, but that’s the kind of stuff that you enjoy, if that’s kind of stuff that you want to learn about, then please consider hitting that subscribe button down below.
And I would appreciate that also very much. But enough of me, you know trying to promote my blog and begging for subscribers, let’s get into why you are reading this article and that’s because I’m assuming you want to learn how to do keyword, research using Google’s keyword, planner, so yeah anyway doing keep doing research Keyword, research when making your contents for your blog or for your website is very important, and you know luckily, for us there’s a fruit, there’s a free tool that we can use from Google.
It’s called the Keyword planner, and so I’m going to show you exactly how to use that in this article, I’m on my computer right now, and so let me get myself out of the way and we will get into it. Let me minimize myself so Google great, if you have it in order to do this, if you haven’t done so already, you need a Google Ads account in order to use the free Google Keyword planner. So if you just type in goog or I’m sure like if you type in let’s say, like Google ad account, Google Adwords even keyword planner well, let’s type in Google Keyword planner first, you need a Google ad account in order to do this.
Yeah there’s group of planner, Google Apps, Google Keyword planner, and so, if you don’t have a Google AdWords account yet then you need to set one up in order to use this. Google Keyword planner, and that is because it’s for Google Ads and so with Google eyes. They ask for your credit card information in order to pay for ads, and this is my school and let me I’m logged in to my school account. Let me log out of here whoa crap anyway.
You do need where’s that coming up on Monday MIT signed in get started, but anyway you do need a Google Ads account. They do ask for your credit card to put your credit card in to pay for the ad, but as soon as you get it set up, then you immediately need to pause the ad so, as you know, you’re not charged for it because there’s a review process. So if you pause the ad, you won’t be charged for anything but go ahead and set up an account and then once you have it set up, then you can come back and read the rest of this article.
But so let me I’m going to sign in first to mine. Let me sign in to my account. I don’t want to send it to my school and I want to sign in to I want to switch. I want to sign in to this one my I have two ones for my school, so I have a couple. Google Ads accounts yeah. This is the one I want to sign in to I consider how any ads running at the moment they get. Let it get once it gets loaded on here: okay, yeah stalking, about setting up an odd, but I don’t want you right now.
So bat. If you go under tools and settings, it will be here. It says, keyword, it says, planning and under planning. You will have keyword planner, and so once you get your Google ad account set up just go under tools and settings and planning and then keyword planner. How do we fry your keywords in just a few steps jot down? Okay, so once you are actually in – and this is kind of a walk through – I actually don’t want to go through this.
I don’t need to go through. It takes it to god, yes, go back, I’m stupid leave anyway, once you set the Google account and you get your tools and settings and then you go on through the keyword planner. You come to this page, where it has discover new keywords or get search, volume and forecasts, and some filters you’re down here. What we’re going to want to do is you want to want to click on, discover new keywords and for this example, I want to I’m just going to do like keyword, research, right, free keyword, tools, I’m going to do keyword, research, I’m looking for keyword tools, and I don’t know where to go, we’re going to pretend that’s when I’m the content, I’m trying to think about making.
So, first of all, I want to change this from Japan. I want to get rid of that and I don’t want it in Japanese and I don’t want to Japan. I’m in Japan like I said so. That’s why I comes up as a default. Let me take that off. I’m going to change this to English and not Japan or in the United States, and you can just type that in here. So this is like, if you’re trying to target certain countries – and I usually do for english-speaking countries – you need to go in here and change.
It to whatever country or language that you’re trying to target so I’m just going to put the United States of America and save it key words at and Sal. You can start with new word keywords that you type in here or you can start with a website. So let me just add a few key words now with the website. That’s like, if you do comput, if you know who your competitors are right, if you know what their website is, then what you can do is you can put the website in here and then it will show you key words that they use, which is good.
When you do competition research going to a website that can help you out a lot, but we are just going to go with they’re saying we don’t know a competition with this, so we’re just going to start with some keywords, and so I am going to use. I’m going to use keywords, I’m just going to type in here keywords and you need to put. I think you need to separate it by comma and keyword tools, and maybe you just need to hit enter.
This look for a free keyword tool and let’s look for keyword, research, because that’s what my article is going to be about all right, keyword, research, yeah, so just type it in and then hit enter and automatically for any new keywords that you want to bring up. Alright, so, and then, once you do that all you have to do now is hit, get results so instantly States, English and the results to come up soon.
Okay, so here that there they have come up. So if I was going to do a article about keyword research, I would you know getting free tools, use keyword, research, but coming here didn’t the plan. I don’t know what kind of article I want to make. What we’re going to want to do is look up. Look at this column here, the average monthly searches this competition – that’s competition for Google eggs. This ad impressions is top of page that stuff matters if you’re making a Google ad, but for just for making content it doesn’t matter.
We just want to look at like the average monthly searches, because we want to say what is being searched the most and that’s what we’re going to want to use in our title for making our content and keywords that we’re going to want to use we’re. Making. Our content so, for example, on this one, if you look under here keywords, let me make this bigger all right, so it looks like they all have about the same amount right keywords: right: 10k to 100k, a month keywords everywhere: a 10k to 100k Google Keyword, planner 10K.
200K keyword, planner, 10k, 100k. What’s that youtuber suggests 10k and 100k. I don’t know what uber suggests has anything to do with keyword, research and I’m pretty sure, there’s a way that you can filter, filter, stuff, that’s not related out with the older, and I knew how to do it. But with this new and I’m not quite sure, so I’m just going to ignore it for now and I’m just going to look at here’s some keyword, ideas that Google gives you kW finder at Google Keyword tool: that’s 1k, the 10k.
So if you, you can scroll down through here and look at these, but the main ones are these ones on top these 10k 100k – and you can tell what comes up Google Keyword, planner right keywords everywhere – is an application you suggest so anyway for the content. I want to make using this example. I would put keyword research using the Google using Google’s keyword planner because keyword, planner, keyword, planner accurate, and so that’s exactly how I made the article in doing this.
It’s that simple. We could try another one. Let’s go in here. Let’s try let’s say I want to I’m making content. Let’s say on, I don’t know chef and I want to make content about cooking French food right. So, let’s, let’s change this just get rid of all these cooking French food. Okay. So what would we put in this case if I think about cooking okay, so we’re talking about like cooking cuisine, French food, French meal, French recipe, cooking cuisine, French food, French meal? First recipe, click on the make French I’m going to make French food on my website.
That’s good enough now, let’s get results to see what comes up this’ll just take a sec for it to come up and then it’ll be done. I just want to show you. This is really easy to do now. Look at this French for toast 100k to a million recipes with chicken breasts 100k 2 million recipe for a cookies 100k to man, recipe for pork, tenderloin 100k for a million, ah sweet v-day, maybe 100 cakes a million.
My French isn’t that! Well, sorry, slow cooker recipes hundred k, 2 million beeps honey, k, 2 million. These all have a hundred and K a memo down to a black black stone griddle. So I could use these ideas. Ok, French, for toast recipes with chicken breast. So I could make a you know an article titled. You know how recipe for because, like with for for recipe for making whatever cookies or a French recipe for making chicken breast – or you know French recipe for making cookies or something like that French recipe for making pork tenderloin or how to make a recipe to make French recipe for making cookies the French way or something any of those keywords that I want to use, and I would throw in some of these.
You know that that’ll search for the most there, because that’s what’s people’s looking for and that’s what we want so my example made been stupid or but anyway, that’s how you do it. It’s very simple. Let me get out of here. Let me actually close it out. Make myself bigger, because that is the end of this article, truly easy. I know that was short, simple and sweet, but that’s exactly how you do it if you read the article all the way to the end, I really appreciate it.

So that’s just a real short snippet and how can somebody that’s not really super known, sell, hundred-dollar, copies of your victims, we’ll get into it and how he does it. Here’s his tips. Like I talked about, I was in the streets. I had money. I had spots and I sold all my jewelry sold my course and bought studio equipment and devoted myself to it, and I made a lot of music majority of stuff that was on bullets thing.
I don’t know he’s wanted to. I made before my deal number one commit he got rid of all his chains and sold all his stuff like he said just because he knew he was going in a new direction. He didn’t want to be on the streets. No more he’s committed to this music number one commit number two collaborate, so Kendrick, yg Don Kennedy Nancy else themselves. Those guys all collaborated a lot in the beginning of the careers particular with each other, because they were in the same areas, and you could take advantage of this too, because it allows you to build a fanbase, especially if you’re in the city.
So you can get the most out of the area that you’re in I got a few mentor that has put me on books and literature and all that big blob. France is one of them and so on. You know he told me about this book called contagious, contagious, oh yeah, so I got to the second chapter that you were just talking. My heart is this: restaurant owner in Philly started selling Philly cheesesteak $ 400 at his restaurant, and it just was like it set off all type of conversation.
Ever I was talking about extent on type of influential people came to him and just want to check out why $ 100, like Oh Burke, ain’t going bought one David Letterman bought one, you got lost type of expulsion, publicity could be anything became like a staple and Everybody start coming through supporting behind all the cheesesteak, so I put the book down and I was like anybody got without nobody did that with music you.
So this is how you came up with this hundred-dollar mixtape/album idea. Studying he also mentioned having that mentor, I suggest everybody give mentors helpful in career building an empire whatever you want to do. But study study study he’s looking for other information, a lot of people in the hip-hop game. Don’t study, he’s reading books and he’s actually using the information yeah. Sometimes I won’t even go back and get it though.
If his Waggoner know you like, I know, listen to it, why pay for higher you? So I’m like you know, I just want to test out what get offering it free. We do experiment right once again, like I said. Not only is he studying, but he experimented and tested those ideas out right. He not cuz, I’m, not only did he have a hundred dollar copy that came with merchan a free concert pass and things like that, but he offered it 999 copy.
That was just a streaming copy and he also had a free copy. He said you want to see what it did and that he paid attention, which is also going right into this right here. When I came back from our own world on Team C, I was like you know. I know what I fuckin with I’m like. I know what it is. It took me. Five six make sense to really catch it without, like I’m, no well, I know I know what it is that connected to so crashing.
All is with me trying to just saturate the thing with a project with the ability type of wraps any type of movie that they’ve connected to before. I think so. This is that experimenting and paying attention. He has six mixtapes. Obviously, you experimenting your own music, but then he paid attention to say: okay throughout this entire process of all these mixtapes, I’m starting to realize exactly what they fuck.
What about me? Because once you do that, then you have all the power you pay attention to the people. Now you can give the people what they want. I think is your job to distinguish us. So Brandon is about your difference. You’re right about it’s so much of differences. It ain’t about you know, what’s the same, you know exactly right, just like that process, so once he paid attention saw what they connect with now.
He knows what his differences are. He knows what other people like about him and he can give them more of that. So then they can give themselves more of them, and now he has these. This fan base. That’s growing, that’s tip number five from nipsey, but everybody right for you. Yet I know my philosophy on my business model. I need to be involved as a partner. I need to be an owner, I heard, and I know that we ain’t going to have combos.
If you don’t start like that and then step number six, it gets real heavy OOP seven when it comes to that ownership. That’s give something I don’t know, but when it comes to nipsey, he’s super strong on the ownership and we’ll see a little bit more on this litt later. I see nothing right right, but I’m at the table at every dissociation, I’m in control of everything to do with my brand. To me: that’s the power, that’s where the you know the side conversations aren’t in the new opportunity right.
So not only this being an owner mean you own, something because there’s been this additional benefit when it comes to the power. That, therefore, is you so when you want to think about ownership, if you don’t own you’re, not you don’t have the power for decision-making, you don’t have the power for the decision-making you’re not going to be in decision-making meetings in those meetings. That’s on the bigwigs! That’s when the people who really make those moves are meeting right.
So if you can’t be in that meeting, you’re not going to build relationships for the people who really make stuff happen. Yes, nice to deal with some kind of distributor or just your manager or a in our. But if you can’t have that meeting with the guy who runs, let’s just say Disney or some kind of huge company that might even just want to license up all your stuff and give you all these additional opportunities, then you’re missing out on opportunities, which is what Most artists do I’m not trading ownership of the only asset I have, which is my intellectual property.
That’s his music, it’s pretty much true for every artist. All they got is their music, don’t give it up not go anywhere else. Why you feel like man, you know what I need to. I need to put my own compound. May I just believe ownership yeah. You know I mean I believe in you know: um, invest in yourself when you make money, you know you can easily go a lot of places, but I just feel like you know, your foundation should be strong.
He’s super consistent with this, so he made his own compound his own, a recording studio like for recording studios worth in one studios. I hear like four session rooms, but when you do something like this, you have to invest in yourself when you own, then you want to invest, then own, more, invest own, more continue this cycle and this how you slowly but surely build an empire, and next thing You know you buy out the building, you are helping and put other people on.
That would really really having an empire is like data, so I know he’s really super into daddy. He had one conversation when he was talking about him using Ryan Leslie super phone app right, and this really really treks fan data is one thing you need to really collect fan data generally speaking, but this goes to the extent of it. You come up to Nick C and say you’re his number one fan. He could look at his phone in about 10 seconds figure out exactly if you are his number one fan or not, he could just see his data and say hey well.
Actually such-and-such in Tokyo is my number one fan your number 76, because it’s basing on how much you support him. How many shows you going to how much how many album you bought, and he has all that data at the tip of his fingers. This kind of stuff is great because, let’s just say, you had a thousand fans, if you had a thousand fans like a thousand like super super fanatical fans that bought every single thing you put out, even if he has a hundred thousand people like a, but only A thousand people buy everything he knows if he puts out something for $ 120, at least those thousand people are going to buy it.
I’m going to make a hundred twenty thousand dollars off those people at the very least no beginning change like we in control to extent you know. Without the internet we got um a global village that we could deliver content to in our saying and it’s in his worldwide, you could told you to say: you’re marching. You could build businesses. So if you’re not stuck on, you know being a fine jumping and being some type of socialite, you could look at the guy for what it is, and you know saying – and you know build something.
I rock slowly tip number 10 – ignore the bullshit. A lot of artists do not do this they’re huge on the fame, junkie, socialite lifestyle, and what happens is I was going to happen to a lot of them? Is what happened to people past generations, where the oh geez had these great stories of what was and who he used to hang with, but they’re, not on top anymore they’re right there for you, because they didn’t keep making the moves and they didn’t make the right Moves which was focusing on the money in addition to the art, as opposed to just saying, hey, I want to be seen that’s what a lot of people do ignore that same stuff.
If you’re telling me that all y’all gauging it sound scanning billboard, we don’t need y’all y’all, getting an eviction notice. What did she say my this is hey. I don’t care if I’m in your main media outlets, I don’t care if I’m on your radio stations. None of this stuff, in which he’s on another net, he’s only had like one radio, I’m song for real for real, and he doesn’t need that because he can get to his fans, which means he can get to his money.
If he gets his money he can build and then create more music and then get back to his fans and get more money. If you got your fantasy got your money, you don’t need anybody else. All that other stuff is an illusion. I swear how much you get paid are the writers. I wrote that I paid him type of salary to my employees at my business that got felonies and I can’t get jobs, no disrespect so who’s. The underachiever I own, my company own the asset of this whole industry, which is yo-yo masters yo, your intellectual property.
You know, send your publishing, so you know you your metrics and what you gauge in as achievement is actually like a peon or underboss we’re looking at it, because you know like I’m not in it for the fame. Everybody want to be seen and held at the highest regard. Obviously, but you know you can’t cash that out and can take that to the bank, where you can in other ways, but you know, what’s the asset, what do the labels do it, for they do it for the ownership they do it for the for the catalogue For the mailbox money, and so you know, I think if you up one, what’s what’s going on you’ll you’ll respect that you wouldn’t say do underachieving for that yeah.
For you see, I play longer clips with nipsey’s in the other articles because stuff he said, is so real, don’t think like a peon. What he’s referring to is a complexion magazine writer, saying hey this guy’s underachieving? They lit radium one of their top ten underachieving rappers and he’s like no. You measuring people offer this little media buzz and this you know this little Fame over here, but nah man I I can.
I could pay you if I wanted to. I could hire ten of you if I wanted to, because I’m over here, winning with what matters tainted action to the mailbox money. What he was saying with that part is record labels. They finish the mailbox money, which is that money when I wake up is in a new check, is in my mailbox and that just keeps happening he is happening, but most artists. They don’t focus on that.
That’s why we have all these past stories of artists being ripped off he’s saying now. He has both of those things. He has the art and he has the money and he’s going to stay, focusing on that. He doesn’t need to get complex to give him. My a okay, you know it’s just like a metaphor for being a long horn. You don’t judge it by one leg of the race cause. If you judge me by my first leg, you’d have been like you know.
If the biggest dude on the web, then, if you’re, judging by the second leg, you might be like nip didn’t drop out, I’m a disappointment. But if you judge you bought a third leg, you won’t be like nipple, independent moment, yeah way back and look at it. As a marathon buddy dude came from, you know, single house, family, a gangbanging environment, you know, saying, didn’t graduate high school and been through the bullshit.
So what you say here is hey. This is everything if you put him in a nutshell: it’s a marathon. It’s a long game because building an empire is a long name: xjz, eggs, P, Diddy, P, Diddy literally start running marathons because he’s obsessed with the idea of a marathon because he knows he’s playing a long game right, it’s a marathon, so it doesn’t matter about the Ups and downs they they will affect you in the time being, but really, if you know, you’re playing a long game that helps you not get caught up in some of that BS when I said ignore to be this right, keep that in mind that’s number 12 And now we’re going to go out with a quote from Nick C on a mission, your worst enemy is idle time.
That just means hey, don’t waste. Your time on is BS point blank subscribe. If it was helpful, I want to go out with a quick article. I’m just of nimshi talkin about some other stuff because I still think it’s so dope is unhelpful.
These programs are Inkscape, GIMP, Scribus font, Forge and Daiya, and each of these programs is completely free to download and use for both personal and commercial use. They are all open-source software and all of them work on Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.
If you want to download these and try them out for yourself, you can find download links at my website. Tj free com. Let’s take a look at this first program Inkscape, which is a program very similar to Adobe Illustrator. So it will. Let you draw an edit art in there, that’s vector images, and so it gives you a lot of control over those vector images you can. You can actually with vector images if you’re not familiar with them, they can be scaled up into large sizes without becoming pixelated, and you can do all kinds of really cool stuff.
With this program, I’ll show you an example of some art ooh. This is the art of some art that can be created using Inkscape, here’s example of a guitar, and once it’s all drawn up, we can quickly change the coloring and that keeps the lighting and shading. Another example is of working with layers in Inkscape. We have these different layers of this tooth animation and we can toggle them on and off.
We can lock them or unlock them so that we don’t accidentally select them while we’re working with a different layer. So it’s a great tool, lots and lots of good features and tons of different applications. This next program, GIMP, is that bitmap image editor is similar to Adobe Photoshop, and it has a lot of the same functionality that you’d expect to have with in Photoshop. It can do some pretty cool stuff.
I’ve covered it in some of my other programs, so I’m not going to spend too much time on it, but you can apply different effects and layers and filters, and things like that. I won’t do one because it might take too long on the article, but it’s a good program. You can also just create art from scratch. Oh I’ll show you here too, you can work with transparent backgrounds, which is cool. You can remove the background like if you want to create a product product image, and then you can then just fill the background with a solid color, so good program GIMP this next one Scribus is similar to adobe, indesign or quarkxpress.
It’s a desktop publishing tool and you can use it to create books, calendars, business cards, anything that has printed text basically, and it gives you a lot of manipulation over that text. So we can come here. Let’s go to this one here. This is the cat’s in the cradle that picture that one of my images isn’t coming up. But if I go to edit text we can see it lets you have a you, can have different style sheets, so we have a mmm, always that is centered, but so the title has its own style, that the author has its own style and then, if we Change, I can then change the style and it will change it on every page you can so you can collectively edit the footers and the styles of multiple pages at once, without having to go through and physically change it on each page.
Just one of the many features you can do drop caps, it’s great for creating, like I said anything with printed text this next, one font Forbes for Buju is a program for editing and creating fonts. So, for example, here we have I’ll grab the toolbar over here. The letter R we can edit this font and do some different kind of things with it. You can also create fonts from scratch. It’s compatible with several different font formats and you can actually use it to convert fonts from one format to another.
So it’s a good tool: font Forge this last program. Daiya is a program for creating flow charts and diagrams. For example, we can just very quickly sketch up a diagram and then linked ideas together, and it gives you a lot of control and manipulation over how this diagram works, and you can put text we can. We could write text inside this, this box, if you wanted to so it’s great for expressing ideas, but also, if you’re, a designer or into architecture or things like that, it’s got all kinds of different presets like here’s electrical.
So if we want to put in some electrical symbols and create an electrical diagram, we can do that. We can import a background image and draw the these elements on top of it, and you can create your own, your own symbols too, but it’s got a lot of different a lot of different things that you’ve added Cisco Networking. You could do a Cisco network diagram, so good for network network diagrams, make these bigger and see what I’m doing here so cool program, lots of different features and applications for it as well and really quickly before we go.
I want to show you this program. G pic it’s a Windows and Linux only program I think, and it’s, but it’s also open source and it’s a color picker or a scheme jet color scheme generator. It will help you when you’re, creating art, help you find complementary colors. When you find them, you can just double click them and it’ll put them over here in this color lineup that you can then export and use with programs like GIMP and all these ones.
I’ve showed you today, I think, are compatible with these different palettes. You can also use them too. You can drag and drop. It’s not letting me do it because of this screen. I’m doing a screencast right now, but you can come over here and actually apply these colors to a sample webpage or a sample menu and figure out. You know which colors are going to be best for that, so it’s a color picker and scheme generation tool and that’s again, that’s G pick well, these are the programs I want to share with you today appreciate you reading um, if you’re interested I’d like you to Check out some of my other articles, where I do some web design tools, I also have 2d and 3d animation tools so check out my other articles go ahead and comment and subscribe if you’d like to – and I hope you have a wonderful day –
My guest is Brad, frost, web designer and author of atomic design and today we’re talking about Design Systems. Let’s get started so Brett thanks a lot for being here. Thanks for having me, I want to show off by asking you: has the metaphor of a web page exceeded its usefulness, yeah, it certainly has, as what designers we’ve been thinking about.
The web is in terms of pages for a long time right, it’s been with us since the web’s beginning right. We scope things out in terms of pages. If things don’t load in the browser says this web page hasn’t loaded and that’s had a really big impact on sort of how we structure our teams, how we scope our projects and how things are actually executed from from a web design and development standpoint. So, for instance, I work with a lot of large organizations and so they’ll have a team, that’s responsible for the home page and then they’ll have a team, that’s responsible for the product page and another team, that’s responsible for the checkout page and all of those teams Are doing things sort of independent of one another right, because they’re just focused on this notion of pages and as it happens, all of those pages are actually made of the same stuff right.
If we were to break things down, you have buttons, you have form fields. You have blocks and cards and heroes, and all these other things – and we end up with whenever you have these different teams working on different pages and thinking about things. In that way, you end up with you know one button looking similar but different than the next team, that’s working on the next page and so on and so forth, and you, you know, repeat that a number of times and span that out over a number of Years and you end up with a giant mess on your hands, it’s not to suggest that we should stop using the term.
It’s probably still useful for users. Yeah only see things as a flat page, but from a design and development perspective. It’s kind of updated yeah. Yeah, that’s right exactly it’s it’s! It still comes together as a cohesive whole and I think, that’s important, especially as people get into talking about design systems. A lot of people have a big misconception that oh design mean you just sort of isolate things at their component level and just designed the button and just design the sort of headings and just designed the card in isolation.
But that’s just not true. That’s you know. It’s important to sort of realize that yeah things do all of those components, do come together and form a cohesive page at the end of the day and that’s what the user sees and interacts with. So it’s important. It’s not an either-or thing, but we just have to be more considerate about how we make the parts of that page as the web and technology as a whole progresses forward.
How has that changed the way that web designers think about serving pages to users and the ways that the websites are accessed yeah? Well from like an access standpoint or from like a design and build process? The fact that a user could be I mean even these days like accessing the web from their refrigerator. You never know the form factor or anything about the user’s device. You can’t make any assumptions: yeah yeah, that’s right and again it’s gotten really complicated and that’s why I think design systems have become as popular as they’ve been because the devices haven’t slowed down right.
The device proliferation is still happening right. The number of contexts – and you know, screen sizes and form factors and, and you know, yeah native web embedded devices different screens. Different sort of you know. Mouse and keyboard touch inputs, and you know voice and, like all this. Other stuff is just the amount of things that users have or that that designers and developers have to consider as they’re, creating user interfaces and creating these experiences I’ve just sort of accelerated, and we can’t keep up right.
We can’t create bespoke pages, for you know: here’s our small screen view and here’s our tablet view and here’s our desktop view. It’s it’s so we’ve had to sort of pull back out a necessity just because we’re on the hook to deliver more features, more services to more users and more context using more devices in more ways than ever before, and it’s like unfortunate. Our budgets have been increased and our resources haven’t increased with that same sort of exponential curves.
So that’s what’s like sort of forced us to sort of step back and and reconsider how this all gets done, given that there are so many different viewport sizes and everything does that mean that the flat Photoshop file is no longer very useful as a means of Conveying the design, yeah, yeah and and still to this day, I’m working in if Photoshop might be a little long in the tooth when it comes to web design, but same thing happens in sketch in figma.
Just last week I got from the clients designers, you know a mobile version of the comp and a tablet version of a competent desktop version of a comp and and a lot of that’s just sort of wasted effort. Really because all three of those things in isolation are sort of one they’re already alive, because it’s a picture of a website not an actual website, but all those spaces in between is where things really fall down right.
You can sort of paint a picture, especially in a in a static design tool where there’s artboards and you could just sort of move things around in free space like that’s, not how things work in the actual browser right. There’s things like some order considerations and all that you can’t just sort of go on this side screen. I just want to move this from here to here, or this I’m just going to swap this around it’s it’s.
It’s really important to sort of make sure you’re. Considering the actual medium that this user interface is going to come alive and and do that much sooner in your process, I want to ask you about concept reviews before called design Det. What does that mean, and how do you avoid going design bankrupt? There’s no design debt and design bankruptcy. I’ve never actually heard design bankruptcy. Before I like that, I I think a lot of places could declare its design bankruptcy.
I think you know just when it comes to design debt. It’s you have. You know number of teams working on different things and just those we were saying you know working on different pages or different products right across a company and you sort of can can take a cross-section and sort of see a lot of discrepancies. Just in that. But that’s just one moment in time when you stretch out that process over time, especially products that have been around for a long time, the googles of the world or eBay or whatever it becomes like a little sort of Benjamin Button.
Like experience as you click through pages, you get further back in time in these older crustier user interfaces, you’re like how did I end up in 1999 and all of a sudden? So so I think that that’s sort of that sort of that visceral feeling of design debt where it’s like you have all of this sort of old stuff that was created. It’s you know once upon a time and that whenever that was launched, it was the new hotness and the new hotness becomes the old crusty experience.
You know pretty quickly these days right so so I think that the more sort of deliberate and the more sort of systematize you could sort of control and wrangle all of those those sort of user interfaces that are, you know out there in the wild. The better. Your chances are going to be as sort of like reducing that that sort of design debt and that’s again, I think, a big crux like that. The crux of design systems is to sort of help.
You know eliminate that debt to basically take those $ 19.99 designs and say: okay, we’re going to update them with a new design language, but we’re going to do it in a very sort of systematic way so that the next time we do a big redesign. We have actual hooks in there that we could actually sort of lift up the quality of in you know so to evolve that design language like flip the switch and roll that out to a bunch of places, sort of simultaneously or or in very short order.
Instead of like, oh, we have to do this big monolithic redesign, and we have to do that for each of our products again and again and again so the developer experience must be a lot better when you can have like a single source source of truth. For your design, but also the user experience as well, could you describe like what it might be like for a user to be on a site that has designed yet yeah? I mean it.
This happens all the time I mean so. The e-commerce example is a great one, just because I think that you know ecommerce sites, you know super sexy homepage or the super splashy super current right. It’s like it’s got the latest. You know shop fall trends, their shop Christmas like coming up or whatever. That’s like you look very campaign driven. So it’s often like a very modern experience. You sort of like click into like that.
Maybe a product detail page or a product category page that sort of feels modern ish. You know it’s like sort of a little bit more meat and potatoes like e-commerce stuff. So it’s like those templates sort of probably feel pretty good, but then, like you, might get to the shop card or if you like, actually log into your account, it’s like those things feel way different and and then you get to the checkout flow.
And then you know that might be sort of way long in the tooth or it might be sort of built by you know an external vendor or something because they’re processing, credit cards and stuff like that. So it might not actually be integrated with like the rest of the site at all. So what ends up happening for? Why that matters from a user experience standpoint? It’s not just about other things, look different like because who cares as long as that’s effective, then that consistency shouldn’t ever be like the number one goal of any of this, and I think that that’s when we talk about Design Systems, I think that’s another misconception as That, oh, we just want everything to look the same everywhere and that’s just really not true, because if your metrics are doing well and stuff – and you know the buttons look different on the checkout page then on the the product detail page, then that’s fine right! No harm no foul, but the problem is, is whenever you’re, a user and you encounter say a date picker or something – and this is a favorite one of mine just because those are hard to build so often times developers just sort of go and grab something.
You know a library they find on the internet somewhere and if you’re, you know say like at an airline or a hotel chain, and you have four different developers grabbing four different date – pickers across the site. Now, all of a sudden, every time the user needs to pick a date, they have to relearn that new library and that, even if it’s just fractions of a second or a second or two or the, where they’re like oh wait, I’m used to booking from the Homepage, but this is a different convention that slows down that process right and that has a negative hit on you know, certainly when you’re talking about you know booking flights or hotels or something that’s going to cause it dip.
So that’s sort of consistency from a user experience standpoint right that ability of like oh yeah. I’ve encountered this pattern before and I know how this works. So I could just sort of roll on and sort of fill things out a lot faster or interact with this thing faster like that’s. That’s what we’re after right, so that consistency for consistency sake not so much, but consistency from a you know, sort of mapping to what users are used to already like yeah.
That’s, that’s! That’s where it’s at one of the people, problems on a design and development team is not sharing the same vocabulary or calling the same components: yeah consistent yeah. So what are some of the problems of that? And how can designers and developers get on the same wavelength? Yeah, so that’s one of the biggest things that I encounter is as an one exercise that I like to do with design development teams whenever I’m working on design systems with them is right out of the gate, we conduct what I call an interface inventory, so we Basically go across their entire sort of suite of products, or you know, whatever user interfaces could be served by their design system and and sort of divvy things up is like okay, you go hunting for buttons, I’m going to go hunting for sort of.
You know input fields or whatever, and then we sort of do that as a group and then what we do is we get together and sort of present what we found to each other and that’s where it’s really fun, because, especially whenever you have designers in the Room developers in the room, QA engineers, business people in the room right like the product owners, like all these different disciplines and you actually sort of have to articulate what your UI is right.
So so somebody will get up and it’s like. Oh and here’s this admin bar and then somebody gets admin bar. We call that the utility bar right and then the developers are like. Oh, we we just mark that up as the gray bar right, and so it’s like. Okay, there we go right. You got everything out on the table right, these inconsistent names for the same thing, and of course that means you have to have again just like that sort of user experience you have to like slow down.
You have to have have a meeting to figure out what you’re going to call this thing like, and you know a lot – can get lost in translation in between design team or different disciplines, but also different teams in general right. If team one is calling it a certain name and team, two is calling it something else. That’s a big deal right, so so again, so bringing this all back to Design Systems. What that it, what a design system can do is sort of centralize your sort of UI patterns call them names right, give write guidelines around them, so that everyone is like, literally speaking, the same language right.
They know what you mean when you say utility bar, and you know how to use it where it’s useful, but also crucial. One of the other things that we found really valuable in in creating design systems for clients is here’s. What this thing is: here’s where it’s useful, but also maybe here’s some gotchas or here’s where it might not be useful, and maybe you want to use this other thing. Instead, what are some of the trade-offs of investing in a bespoke design system versus taking something off? The shelf, like a bootstrap yeah, that’s a big one and I’d say it’s tough, because tools like bootstrap and material design are already made.
They’re they’re, they’re well tested right, they’re in use by giant companies like this company called. Have you heard of Google before it’s like? It’s pretty big one. It sounds familiar yeah, so so a lot of these people right who are using tools like bootstrap and material design, they’re like oh, this has been tested by these. You know giant companies, so I could just sort of grab this and go and I don’t have to do all that work myself and that might be true and there are sort of instances of that um.
I think one of the big things that is important to sort of recognize and consider whenever you’re reaching for these tools is that it’s like you, don’t own it and it might be attractive from sort of you know, inefficiencies sake at first but as time goes on Right at the end of the day, your boss or your you know your product owners or your clients or whoever they are they’re going to say. Oh, we need to do this this way or we need to add this feature and all of a sudden, you’re you’re.
You have to learn and become sort of fluent in this other sort of system that you didn’t write, so so it can work and you can do things and extend things and customize things that works with the grain and these frameworks, but oftentimes. What I found is I work with clients that end up sort of working against the grain and they end up having to sort of undo a bunch of stuff and write a bunch of other custom stuff.
And then they end up in this sort of like weird messy middle ground, where it’s like. This is our sort of hacky stuff that we’ve done to sort of make things our own. But then also crucially, I’ll say that, from like a more of like a front-end architecture standpoint, I think that it’s sort of like safe, you know you got good bones to build upon, but like material design and boots actually offer a sort of anesthetic right.
They provide anesthetic and that could be helpful because again it’s like oh here’s, some good, looking buttons, here’s some good, looking form fields, here’s some good, looking components that I could use, but if Nike Adidas Puma, if you know Reebok whatever, they were all to use bootstrap For their redesigns, they would look frightening Lee similar right and that’s sort of not what they’re going for so there’s like there is this sort of branding aspect of it right this own ability that sort of gets lost whenever you’re sort of all using the same thing.
What are some of the challenges or unsolved problems of design of design? I mean I, I think, sort of specifically to design systems like a lot of there’s some things that are around sort of you know, tooling, and sort of figuring out how to keep design tools and tools, expanding quiff. You know what’s in code, that’s definitely one of the most. I feel like tangible sort of problems that but there’s a bunch of teams, doing a lot of work to try to solve that and startups and stuff that there are really exciting.
And so a lot of them look promising. And I don’t necessarily think that that’s you know far and away the biggest problem. That’s out there. I think so. Many of the problems with with design systems have to do with the sort of people have to do with communication and collaboration and sort of figuring out like how do we get this stuff adopted into our products right? How do we sort of communicate when things aren’t working as planned like? How do we sort of you know, establish solid processes for releasing new versions of the design system and letting everyone know like here’s one? You want to use the design system or here’s one.
It’s sort of safe to sort of you know, deviate from that system or build upon it or extend it, and how do you roll that back into the system? So a lot of that sort of coordinating a bunch of different people who are all suddenly relying on this, this design system product that stuff, I feel is – is still very tough to crack because it involves people and your you know the health of your your you Know design and development culture and like how well everyone sort of you know, collaborates together and like, of course, that’s that’s tricky right, so you could like you.
Could I could say things like here’s how I would create a governance plan for a design sister for a design system and here’s how I would you know, get these teams to work. You know and communicate more buts and you know easier said than done. Okay, so how much of a design systems success depends on the designers as opposed to the developers? What is their role in the success of it? I think, and – and this might be a little controversial design systems is sort of an unfortunate name because design systems are like.
Oh, this is about design, and it’s really not. The design system is, as I define a design system is, is how the official story of how an organization designs and builds tadaryl products and there’s a lot of ingredients to that story. And yes, like the design language, you know what what the brand colors are, and you know the the rounded corners or not of the buttons and stuff like that sure that that matters.
But that’s actually like a pretty tiny slice of what a design system entails, and so so when it comes to the success of a design system. So much hinges on that design system living in code and living as a thing that engineers and developers can sort of pull down into their application and sort of you know import a component and sort of see that design systems button or whatever show up on their Screen and then they’re able to sort of you know pipe in whatever sort of attributes and click handlers and whatever to sort of make it.
You know, breathe life into it, make it real, but you they sort of get that stuff for free right. If all you have is like a sketch library or some like Zeppelin file or some like like little, it’s a style guide thing where it’s like: here’s, our colors and here’s or whatever, like there’s so much that gets lost yeah if all the developers are doing is Like copying and pasting some hex codes in there, you know sort of crappy like development environments, and it’s just you end up with a bunch of spaghetti, even if they’re all using like the same color blue.
It’s not like systematize right. So what you want to get to is, you want to say like if we change our brand color blue – and this actually just happened on a project of ours – got a brand color blue and actually it wasn’t passing the accessibility level that we wanted, and so they Actually had to sort of you know: tweet the the color blue in order to make that sort of pass. You know because sort of cut the accessibility, mustard and with a design system like you literally, have you know a variables file or is these design tokens? You sort of tweak that value there and then that ripples out to the entire sort of design system right and then that gets packaged up in a new release of the design system in code.
And then you know next time the developers pull that down. Those sort of get and see those updates, so so, coming back to it’s like yeah, like the design language part of it, like the look in the feel of it that matters, I’m not going to say it doesn’t matter, but it’s almost just like you’ll, like do Your thing make it look good like I, you know. I trust you be systematic about it right. Thinking about motifs that are going to sort of like you know, translate well the different components, but, like so much hinges on like getting that stuff into a place where it’s consumable by the actual sort of you know, environments that users will be interacting with your products And that’s what we spend, probably the overwhelming majority of our time and effort on is actually like building out those libraries with components right, an HTML, CSS JavaScript.
You know bundling that stuff up and like sort of working with development teams to make sure that they have what they need in order to use the system successfully. So, to what extent should a design system anticipate the chaos of user-generated content like errors and long names? What is the actual like breaking point of a design system yeah? Well, I think that the breaking point of the design system has everything to do with how well you consider all of that stuff right.
So if, if it’s user-generated content that you need to account for and you’re in your UIs, then you have to you know, consider things like character limits and things like that. But you know there’s many other flavors of that as well. You know internationalization right, right-to-left languages or just you know, German will wrap onto multiple lines, and things like that – and this is where I think again – sort of designing and building components in isolation is a bad idea because you could sort of you surf fall into the Trap of saying like well, here’s this like perfect scenario where you know everything’s filled in and the card has this nice sort of you know image I found from unsplash and it’s like really nice.
Looking and you know, as it happens, the users name is Sarah Smith and Sarah doesn’t even have an H on it, so it just fits so nicely onto one line and of course, the reality of of our user interfaces is anything but that, and this sort of Also comes back to like the trap, was sort of relying on these sort of static design tools to sort of handle that they’re up until very very recently, there weren’t even conventions in place to sort of handle like dynamic data, so that’s sort of how we handle That this is where atomic design as a methodology – I think, really shines.
So what atomic design does is basically helps people consider the whole the pages, the actual product screens in various states and configurations, as well as the sort of parts of that hole right. So the underlying components that build up those screens and at the page level of atomic design, what we’re able to do is articulate here’s. What our homepage looks like with this. You know the fall campaign with the leaves – and you know this tagline and this call to action button that takes people to this and and whatever, but then you’re also able to say, okay and then here’s what this that same page looks like in German or here’s.
What that that same page looks like with you know the Christmas campaign and oh that’s, sort of image that we’re using that has a bunch of Christmas ornaments that actually is sort of you know, impacting the the readability of the text. That’s sitting over that image or something like that right, so you could start seeing where the UI starts falling down and then what you’re able to do is is sort of take that and learn from that and sort of go back to that hero component.
At a more atomic level and sort of say, okay, we’re going to maybe add a variation of the hero component that adds like a little gradient overlay so that the the legibility of the text always sort of you know pops over the the image a bit more. So how we sort of do things like in our own workflow, with that we sort of will create sort of you know, try to represent the whole bell curve. So it’s like what does a card? Look like what does sort of like a kitchen sink card? Look like with like the maximum character count that you might be able to sort of upload as a user or something or what happens if the user uploads the profile picture, what if they don’t right, and so all those various states and sort of you know, mutations Of the other component, so to get that sort of commonly used case down.
Of course, as like a starting point but like you really do have to represent like here’s, the extreme and here’s the empty and sort of everything in between as well and the only real way to test. If that actually works is by sort of plugging in real products and Aereo’s into your user interfaces and by sort of having that best sort of atomic design system wired up where, like the pages, informs and influences the underlying components, you’re able to sort of make changes To those components with which, then, you know, inform and influence that the actual page design, so it’s sort of like a virtuous cycle between like the design system and the pages and screens that that system builds.
Finally, what resources would you recommend for people eager to learn? More about design, Cisco there’s a lot I feel like. I have a hard time, keeping up with them anymore. There’s a there’s a number of really great resources, one that I help maintain is a resource called style guides i/o, which is a collection of, I think, we’re over like 200 50 examples of public design systems and style guides that are out there in the wild as Well, as sort of talks and books and resources and tools around a design system, so that’s just like an open source resource repository that people contribute to and sort of, submit poor requests to.
There is design dot systems which is maintained by Gina Ann who’s done so much work for the design systems community. She has a clarity conference, which is a conference dedicated to design systems. We have a podcast, which is a little bit in hiatus, but where we interview people that work at different organizations who have spun up their design systems and what they’ve learned and sort of you know struggled with as they’ve as they’ve done it.
Stu Robson has a really fantastic design systems newsletter. That’s part of the design, dot systems, sort of universe there and then there’s also a slack group all about design systems as well. So I’d save it like that sort of has me covered for sure and again there’s like a lot of activity there and new stuffs happening every day and people are learning from things you know from each other and plugging them in at their organisations and sharing what They’ve learned and like that’s really for me, the most exciting part of all of this is just sort of you know.
Here’s some concepts here are some things that we’ve found useful share. Those people take them, learn from them validate or invalidate them and sort of share. What they’ve learned and then everyone benefits from it, so your book is also available for free to read online right where it is yeah yeah, so you could read it at atomic design. Brad Frost, calm great breath. This has been great. Thank you so much for pyrite.
Thanks so much for having me, you can check out the links to everything we talked about in the description below thanks for reading, we’ll see you next time.
